FIRST QUARTER 2018

Autumn / Winter fashion promotions Christmas highlights

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear fellow traders and professionals, I trust the new year has been off to a good start for you all, following on from a busy and productive Christmas trading period. Easter will be the next major trading season on the retail calendar, and sales are expected to spike across many retail sectors. Food (particularly fresh produce and seafood), beverages, travel, and confectionery are typically the busiest categories for this time of year. As consumers enjoy extended leisure time, they will be looking to fill it with visits to cafes, restaurants and entertainment offerings, which presents traders with an opportunity to make the most of extended opening hours as well as seasonal promotions and sales. To support increased sales at this time of year, we will hold promotional activities to promote Camberwell shopping precinct during this time.

can be made by simply “asking the question”. Same goes for your energy suppliers. Change if you have to, as it is free. The Well shopping centre continues to roll out renovations, with the restrooms recently refurbished to incorporate a new parent’s room. New stores will also be fitted out, with Rex Espresso one of the first to open as part of these works. My store (Dymocks) will also be moving soon – to shop 110B, two doors down – so end of March will be busy. The centre will refurbish all levels this year. I wish you all well as you move into the Easter trading period and the autumn/winter season thereafter. Regards,

Henk Kelly-Kobes President, Camberwell Centre Association

We also have great news for our occupancy rates – it is down to 5.5% due to landlords finally reducing rents and long leases. Make the most of your negotiations by speaking to other retailers and office lessors. Savings

MARKETING SNAPSHOT Our most recent campaign for Valentine’s Day gave entrants the chance to win a $200 romantic date for two at Rivoli Cinemas, which includes dinner and a film in Gold Class. To go in the running, entrants had to tell us how they would spend Valentine’s Day in Camberwell. We also ran a competition to coincide with New Year throughout the month of January. Entrants had to tell us how they planned to make 2018 their year for a chance to win a $200 shopping voucher. For Christmas, we ran our annual Where’s Rudolph? competition. It has become incredibly popular among locals and families, and we received some great feedback about the competition. The major prize winner of our 2017 competition was Liana Shaw, who won a $500 voucher to spend in Camberwell. There were also 10 minor prize winners who won $20 vouchers to Grill’d Camberwell. Camberwell Shopping’s digital audience continues to grow, with increased users across our website, social media platforms and email database. Digital activity remains a key low-cost marketing activity in our mix and continues to yield excellent results for the shopping precinct.

The Camberwell Shopping website continues to thrive, with hundreds of enquires from customers submitted via contact forms direct to traders through the site each year. ✓✓ More than 4,700 email addresses in our email database ✓✓

Over 117,000 unique visitors to our websites in the past year (10,000 per month on average)

SHOW

Join us in May for Camberwell’s premier health and wellness event In May, the precinct will hold CamberWELL-BEING, a day that celebrates businesses that offer health and wellness products and services. Customers will be invited to register and follow the Wellness Trail. They’ll collect their branded sports bag from our event booth on the day, which will include a ‘Passport to Wellness’. They then follow the trail to discover what’s on offer and can get their passport stamped at participating businesses. When they return they’ll go into our prize draw.

You can get involved: If you’d like your business to participate on the Wellness Trail, please get in touch with Kerry Daly (contact details below). We can also promote your specials and offers on our CamberWELL-BEING website. You can be as creative as you like!

Here are some ideas: ✓✓

Run a ‘free trial’ class. If you offer fitness classes, wellness practices or health consultations, offer a free session on the event day as a way to expose new people to your business. Tell us about this and we can help promote it.

✓✓

Host an open day. Hold an open day to give people a taste of what your business offers. This is particularly effective for businesses that normally run private classes.

✓✓

Offer a special. Run a limited offer on health and wellness products or services during May and June to tie in with the promotional period, or exclusively on the event day. E.g. ‘30% off’ or ‘buy one, get one free’.

✓✓

Offer free samples. This can include taste testing for food products, samples of cosmetic or health products, or vouchers to get people back into your store.

Still struggling for ideas but keen to get involved? Talk to us and we’ll be able to help. Contact Kerry Daly by phoning (03) 9813 4190 or emailing kdaly@camberwellca.com.au

Dine In Dine Out Saturday, August 4 August is food month in Camberwell and we’ll celebrate with our Dine In Dine Out event which promotes local restaurants, cafes, eateries and food stores.

Get involved in DIDO 2018 If you run a food business in Camberwell this is an excellent opportunity to capitalise on activities and promotions that will take place in August. You can create your own food-related event or promotion in-store to be part of the food month which will be complimented by Dine In Dine Out’s major advertising efforts. This activity is designed to bring more people to Camberwell to experience and enjoy food and is an easy way for you to drive ‘bums to seats’ or ‘dollars to your till’.

What are you going to do? Here are some suggestions: ✓✓

Food and wine/beer matching menu

✓✓

Degustation menu

✓✓

Themed dinner – e.g. pasta night/ paella/ seafood/ fancy dress

✓✓

Entertainment – offer music or belly dancing at your eatery

✓✓

Fixed price dinner or lunch – for the month of August, on set days or times, etc

✓✓

Special guest – feature a chef, sommelier or author at your business

✓✓

Sales offer – sell a particular product, dish or meal deal at a special rate in August.

Dine In Dine Out’s main event will be held on Saturday, August 4. All stores can tap into this community event, with many shoppers and local families coming along for free entertainment, tastings and other related activities. To be included in the print promotion we will need your submissions no later than July 1. For further information or to find out how your business can get involved, please contact Kerry Daly via email: info@camberwellca.com.au

AUTUMN FASHION CAMPAIGN Camberwell’s autumn campaign will run in March and will include an editorial promotion which incorporates fashion and lifestyle articles on our Style Junction website. Throughout the campaign we’ll run a competition asking entrants to select their favourite outfit from our fashion lookbook (featuring images provided by fashion and beauty stores) for a chance to win $1000 to spend in Camberwell. Extra entries apply if people upload receipts over $25 from fashion and beauty stores, thereby encouraging sales. The activity is designed to boost traffic to our websites and social media platforms, and encourage extra sign ups to our monthly email newsletter. The aim is to also position Camberwell as a premier shopping destination for autumn/winter fashion and attract more shoppers to the precinct. To get involved, please email your new season images, lookbooks and sales promotions to: info@camberwellca.com.au

BOROONDARA VOLUNTEER EXPO 2018 If you’d like to volunteer in 2018, look no further than the 13th Annual Boroondara Volunteer Expo. Connect with over 50 community organisations from a diverse range of sectors and causes, and learn about the many ways you can make a difference. There’s no need to RSVP, just come along on the day and learn about the many wayvs you can volunteer. Visit camberwellshopping.com.au/community/ boroondara-volunteer-expo-2018/

EASTER CAMPAIGN Easter will run early this year (March 30 – April 2) so we encourage traders to plan their Easter specials and offers sooner rather than later. To mark the occasion, we will run The Great Camberwell Easter Hunt. The competition will ask entrants to find the golden eggs hidden in shop windows around the Camberwell precinct for a chance to win a $200 shopping voucher. The more golden eggs people find, the more chances they’ll have to win. The campaign will be supported by digital advertising activity.

CHRISTMAS HIGHLIGHTS Our Christmas campaign was a huge success, as we carried out comprehensive advertising activity across print, radio and digital mediums. Our key messages included ‘avoid the hassle of big shopping malls’, ‘don’t risk late online orders’, ‘choose your local retailers’ and ‘over 400 stores in Camberwell’. As a result of this activity, December 2017 was a record-breaking month for traffic to the Camberwell Shopping website, with a massive 17,600 sessions (Dec 2016: 14,867 and Dec 2015: 9,972). There were 10,671 organic search visits to the Camberwell website alone showing how well the site leveraged Google search during this busy period. Our Christmas Family Day (held on December 16, 2017) was our biggest Christmas event to date, with record crowds and activities taking place. Visitors to the precinct enjoyed roving entertainers, live music, face painting, photos at our festive photo wall, rides on the antique fire truck, balloons, and our annual Where’s Rudolph? competition.
