CREATING A CAPSULE WARDROBE

Curating a minimalist wardrobe has a range of benefits, from simplifying decision-making to saving money and reducing your environmental impact.

If you’re the kind of person who likes to spring clean your closet, you may even go one step further and create a summer capsule wardrobe.

A minimalist capsule wardrobe offers all sorts of perks, from reducing your environmental footprint to streamlining your fashion choices.

WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE?

A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist collection of clothing that’s carefully curated and easily interchangeable, so that you can mix and match items seamlessly. It allows you to achieve different looks depending on the occasion, with a limited selection of timeless, essential pieces.

One of the key benefits is that a capsule wardrobe makes the decision-making process so much easier when choosing what to wear in the morning. With fewer options, you have more time to focus on the important stuff, like what’s for breakfast or getting on with the day ahead.

A capsule wardrobe also means you’ll save money on buying clothing you don’t really need. Instead, it’s about finding high-quality, timeless pieces that fit well and make you feel confident.

And the biggie – the sustainability factor. By buying fewer garments, you’ll reduce your environmental impact on the planet and contribute less to landfill.

“People choose a minimalist capsule wardrobe for its practicality and sustainability,” said Anabela Mangogna, owner of fashion boutique Bellite. “It reduces decision fatigue, encourages mindful shopping, and often reflects a more intentional and eco-friendly lifestyle.”

Aluma Tirosh, owner of fashion store Best-T, said a capsule wardrobe is very easy to maintain.

“It gives you peace of mind when you dress up in the morning that you’ll know everything works. If clothes or dressing up makes you stressed, I think a capsule wardrobe will be a good solution for you,” she said.

A CAPSULE WARDROBE MAKES THE DECISION‑MAKING PROCESS SO MUCH EASIER WHEN CHOOSING WHAT TO WEAR IN THE MORNING.

HOW TO BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE

“Building a capsule wardrobe starts with identifying your personal style and lifestyle needs,” said Ms Mangogna.

“From there, you select a base colour palette, focus on quality over quantity, and choose pieces that are versatile and can be layered or combined easily.”

A good place to start is to clear out what you don’t need.

“If you want to make a capsule wardrobe, I would take out (everything) from your wardrobe, see what you have and then build from this,” said Ms Tirosh.

Focus on neutral colours like black, navy, grey, beige, cream, white and brown. Also consider what colours complement your skin tone the most. If you like brighter colours, incorporate a couple of accent pieces into your capsule collection.

Next, lean towards styles that will be timeless and won’t go out of season. A white blouse, classic black blazer and tailored trousers are more likely to still look fashionable after five years than an out-there geometric print, faux fur emerald jacket and flare jeans. You’ll want to include fabrics and cuts that will be functional and easy to care for in the long run.

When it comes to accessories, make sure they are versatile and can be mixed and matched with different outfit combinations.

“If you want to be creative with accessories, jewellery and bags, a capsule wardrobe is a good base,” said Ms Tirosh.

“It’s a blank canvas that you can add your own personality to.”

It may help to write down the items you want to keep and what you need to purchase to create your ideal capsule wardrobe. Don’t go buying anything new in a hurry – sit with your reduced capsule wardrobe for a while before filling any gaps.

WHAT TO CONSIDER FOR A CAPSULE WARDROBE IN SUMMER

Make sure you include breathable fabrics in your summer capsule wardrobe. Cottons, linens and bamboo are examples that work well in warmer weather because they are lightweight, moisture-absorbing and breathable.

Choose looser silhouettes that still look feminine but don’t cling to the body too tightly. Examples include tiered dresses, skirts and maybe even a kaftan that can be cinched at the waist for added elegance.

Lighter colours are optimal in summer. A white linen button-down blouse paired with linen trousers can be easily transitioned from day to night, with a simple change of accessories and footwear.

“I would go a little further and add something more summery, like maybe a pattern of relaxed flowers or stripes. In summer you want to go a little bit wild,” said Ms Tirosh.

Don’t forget to accessorise with a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection in the warmer months.

A pair of denim shorts can work for both casual and dressier occasions.

SUMMER HOLIDAY CAPSULE WARDROBE ESSENTIALS

There are so many advantages to having a minimalist summer capsule wardrobe, especially when you go on holidays. For one, you’ll have less luggage to heave with you.

Experts recommend the following summer holiday capsule wardrobe essentials:

• A staple black swimsuit, which can be transformed into a bodysuit at night.

• A loose linen shirt, which can double as a beach cover-up.

• A white T-shirt, which is perfect for layering and wearing with shorts for a casual look or trousers and accessories for more glam feels.

• A sizeable straw bag to carry essentials like beach towels, sandals and your holiday summer read.

• A relaxed midi dress or maxi skirt that’s flowing and breezy.

• A pair of denim shorts that can work for both casual and dressier occasions.

• Comfortable trousers. If you want something a little different, go for classic patterns like pinstripes.

• A pair of comfy, chic sandals that will work for cocktail hour and poolside lounging.

For a pop of colour, consider butter yellow. It’s this season’s go-to shade.

INSPIRING INTERIORS

As the weather warms up, there’s nothing like freshening up your interiors with a cool new vibe that will bring life to your living spaces. From dopamine-inducing yellows to marvellously mellow marble, this year’s summer interior trends are guaranteed to put the ‘wow’ factor in your home decor style. Here’s some inspiration to get you started.

BUTTER YELLOW

BOTANICAL PATTERNS

Add a pop of happiness to your interiors with butter yellow hues, as featured heavily in this year’s spring/summer runway collections. The colour has moved from fashion into interiors, and can do wonders to transform a dull space into an uplifting one. Butter yellow works best with neutral colour schemes. Start with simple accents like throw pillows, blankets and decorative accessories, then go bigger with wall art or accent chairs.

WICKER AND RATTAN

Achieve an effortlessly cool bohemian look this summer with wicker baskets and/or rattan furniture and accessories. Far from being something you’d only see in Bali, natural textures like bamboo and rattan are taking Australian interiors by storm at the moment. An easy way to incorporate rattan is on your dining table, with rattan placemats and coasters. Otherwise, get creative with rattan or wicker homewares, shelving, side tables or hanging baskets.

Freshen up your decor and bring energy to your home with botanical patterns this summer. Think leafy prints in shades of green, wild blooms from an English garden, or Australian natives that make you feel at home. While you’re at it, add a few new indoor plants to the mix. Science has shown that greenery can help reduce stress and improve wellbeing, so this trend is a win-win all round.

SIMPLY THE ZEST

For colour inspiration this summer, look no further than your fruit bowl. Citrus colours like lemon, lime and orange can add zing to your interiors and put some pep in your step. The lemon print trend, in particular, has proven popular with designers of late, adding a pop of fun and brightness to home decor styling. Why not invest in lemondecorated bowls or a lemon-motif tablecloth? They’re simply the zest.

MARBLE

From marble kitchens and bathrooms to flooring and accessories, there are loads of ways to incorporate this timeless natural stone into the living areas of your home. If the budget allows, you may consider upgrading your kitchen with marble benchtops or using marble in your bathroom to create a luxurious spa-like experience. Otherwise, start with marble homewares such as trays, coasters and lamp bases that infuse sophistication into a space.

STATEMENT ARMCHAIRS

A statement armchair is the perfect way to brighten up a space, accent a room and add personality to your home this summer, without over- committing. Whether you opt for a canary-yellow or rust- coloured armchair, a retro rattan number or an unusually shaped piece in a muted tone, a statement armchair will add interest to your living areas. Don’t be afraid to go bold with standout stripes, non-apologetic velvet or vibrant prints.

SUMMER SKINCARE

With the summer season here, there are some things to consider including in your skincare routine. Here’s what the experts recommend.

With the mercury on the rise, now is the time to start implementing your summer skincare routine.

If you’ve never thought about changing your skincare regimen depending on the season, it’s important to start.

“Adjusting your skincare with the seasons is crucial, as your skin’s needs change with temperature and humidity,” said Cassandra Ferretti, owner of Regen Skin.

“In winter, you may need richer, hydrating products to combat dryness, while in summer, lighter oil-free products can help manage increased oil and sweat.

“Sun exposure also impacts skin sensitivity, so modifying your routine helps keep your skin healthy and balanced year-round.”

Ms Ferretti said a good summer skincare routine starts with hydrating from the inside out.

It’s recommended women consume about two litres of water a day (8 cups), while men should drink about 2.6 litres per day (10 cups).

“Drinking plenty of water helps maintain hydration while supporting your skin’s elasticity and can help flush out toxins, contributing to a healthier and more radiant complexion,” said Ms Ferretti.

“As we approach the warmer season, we’ll see higher humidity levels, which can lead to more sweating and cause potential dehydration. This can affect your skin’s moisture levels and overall appearance.”

For summer, Ms Ferretti recommends using a high SPF sunscreen and reapplying it frequently.

“Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser, exfoliate one to two times a week and stay hydrated with a toner or mist,” she said.

“Avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and avoid sun exposure if using products with active ingredients.”

Derma Cosmetika founder, director and dermal therapist Lilian Botros agrees that it’s important to tweak your skincare seasonally, particularly given the higher UV ratings in summer and because the skin changes depending on the season.

She recommends being extra vigilant about skin protection by wearing a hat, sunglasses and a physical sunblock.

“The physical sunblock has the highest protection. It can be SPF 30 or SPF 50, but the way it’s made, it has zinc, so you actually have something on your skin that blocks the sunlight,” said Ms Botros.

“Reapply sunblock every three to four hours. People put it on once in the morning and think the skin is protected, but it wears off.

“If you have foundation on, use a make-up that already has SPF, then you can put a fresh layer on top (rather than washing off your make-up and starting from scratch).”

Ms Botros said you can use the same cleanser year-round, but make sure

you’re exfoliating once or twice a week.

Incorporating a serum into your skincare routine is also important, including in the summer months.

Cosmeceutical brands usually have a higher percentage of active ingredients, according to Ms Botros, which works better for the skin. Keep in mind that some products, like retinol (a form of vitamin A), should only be applied at night, as skin may become more sensitive to sunlight.

Vitamin B or C serums may be used morning and night depending on the skin condition, skin type and the routine.

Lastly, Ms Botros said you can change your moisturiser in summer, but only if your skin type calls for it.

“If you have oily or combination skin, you may choose a lotion instead of a cream, but perhaps not for dry to very dry skin.

“Very dry skin can be dry throughout the year – it just gets worse in winter. But you still need that cream and extra oil in the skin to keep it moist and hydrated.”

Ms Botros added that it’s a good idea to have a skin consultation every six to 12 months.

That way, you can get an update on your skin’s condition and have peace of mind that you’re using the right products with the right active ingredients.
