The Western will once more be held in-person at the happiest place on Earth! We are still offering a virtual option since COVID is not gone and your feedback was clear: it is something you wanted. Whether in-person or remotely, you will again receive the high-quality, multi-disciplinary educational program you have come to expect. In true Western fashion, we will provide practical information that you can apply in your daily practice, new viewpoints, and hands-on skills training in our workshops. There will be opportunities to learn from and engage with instructors and see and hear about the latest technology. As always, there will be something for everyone.
The 2023 Western will continue honoring the tradition of being one of the only remaining conferences with a session dedicated to the study of biomechanics. Many other topics will be covered, including sessions on sports medicine, pain management, ulcer management, joint pain, fractures, tendon ruptures, hallux valgus, and limb salvage. The 2023 Western will also feature workshops on topics you requested, such as external fixation, minimal incision surgery, and biomechanics. You must register for these highly sought-after workshops, and there are a limited number of first come, first served seats. Don’t wait to sign up!
We are also fortunate to have a well-rounded faculty ranging from established podiatric physicians, to some of the best young minds in podiatric medicine and surgery and multidisciplinary experts from allopathic and osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, and optometry. The faculty will share pearls on how to critically evaluate some of the most routine pathology to avoid missteps as well as take on some of the most challenging conditions and their complications.
We are excited to have Dr. William Henning as our keynote speaker. Dr. Henning is the Vice-Chair of the Bureau of Socioeconomic Affairs for the American Osteopathic Association. He is a family practice physician and healthcare executive who most recently served as Chair of the California Healthcare Workforce Commission. He is also an experienced Chief Medical Officer of multiple insurance plans and past president of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California.
You won’t want to miss the standing-room only Saturday morning presentation by PICA. Always an intriguing and dynamic program, attendance will provide podiatric physicians their 15% PICA premium renewal discount. (Registration for The Western is required to attend this session.)
Our Californian registrants can earn radiology CECH for their license requirements while gaining a top-notch education. We have extended the capability to earn 4 fluoroscopy CECH by taking the brand new on-demand fluoroscopy course and exam dedicated to this purpose. Western registrants will be able to take and complete this upgraded course for free through August 1.
We will also have a 2-hour session to provide the state-mandated sexual harassment and discrimination prevention training you are required to attend. Even with this non-CME session integrated into the program, DPMs will still have the opportunity to earn 25 CECH.
We have an entirely new assistants’ program this year with focus on emergencies, billing, and basics with a hands-on segment catered to experienced or novice MAs with basics presented for understanding why we do what we do. Your entire staff will have both administrative and hands-on clinical training, with the state-mandated sexual harassment and discrimination prevention course included. There will be exciting presentations on topics that will improve patient care and optimize coding by learning techniques like proper casting, taping, and room set-ups. Your staff will enjoy the training, and everyone can benefit from the positive changes you will have in your office. This is open to assistants from private practices to institutional employees. Have your assistants register today!
The exhibit hall features our new Innovation Hub ! Enter the hall and engage our Innovation Hub sponsors by participating in their hands-on experiences right in their booths. Make your way through the exhibit hall to visit all our sponsors and exhibitors to see the latest in medical and surgical care, or simply take a break, grab a healthy snack, and engage with peers. The Western will provide free morning and afternoon refreshments to keep you on your toes for the duration of the meeting.
Virtual attendees will again be able to watch the general sessions in real time to earn the same amount of CECH as onsite attendees without leaving the comfort of their home or office.
All attendees will use the same meeting app for Q&A with speakers, connecting with peers, and even watching replays of sessions after the meeting. New this year – by popular demand – attendees will be able to download transcripts immediately after the meeting upon completion of their evaluations!

California Podiatric Medical Association is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education as a provider of continuing education in podiatric medicine. California Podiatric Medical Association has approved this activity for a maximum of 25 Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH).
Doctors of Podiatric Medicine will be able to attain a maximum of 6 Radiology Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH) in the general sessions. When taking the free on-demand fluoroscopy course and attending all general sessions, a total of 10 Radiology CECH can be earned, including 4 Fluoroscopy CECH* to meet California Radiology Continuing Education requirements. A link to access this course will be available for registrants of The Western via the meeting app. To get the course for free, the code provided in the meeting app must be applied and the course completed by August 1.
NOTE: Continuing education credits are included in the Doctors’ General Sessions and may vary dependent upon which sessions and workshops are attended.
IMPORTANT
* Fluoroscopy units are offered in the free fluoroscopy on-demand course. Registration and successful completion of the course and quiz is required to earn the full 4 fluoroscopy CECH.
In accordance with the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), The Western is required to monitor educational session attendance for continuing education (CE) verification.
ONSITE ATTENDEES will have badges with QR codes and must scan their badges twice daily at designated times for credit.
VIRTUAL ATTENDEES must sign in twice daily for credit within the app.
All attendees will be provided transcripts reflecting only the number of Continuing Education Contact Hours earned by scanning/signing in for general sessions and/or attending workshops. To receive the maximum number of CECH, DPMs must verify their attendance at each of the posted scanning/sign-in times. If attending workshops roll calls must be signed to attain credit. Attendees who are registered for workshops or courses outside of general sessions or who miss scanning/sign-in times will have their total CECH adjusted accordingly.
Continuing education verification transcripts will be available online immediately after the meeting for general sessions. A copy will also be available in your CECH tab at thewestern.org by August 31, 2023. Each registrant is responsible for reporting attendance to all appropriate licensing boards and agencies requiring continuing education.
PLEASE NOTE: The transcript for the 4 Fluoroscopy contact hours will be available separately via the course website.
The Western cannot process CECH transcripts for those taking workshops prior to July as it takes time to process verification reports. If taking workshops and attending from a state which requires proof of attendance prior to July 1, please make a note of this.
If you attend any workshops, your transcript will not reflect true CECH totals until The Western processes workshop attendance records after the meeting. Workshop attendees will be notified when a revised transcript is available. Please disregard the initial transcripts for any sessions presented while you were in a workshop. Please keep this in mind when registering for workshops.
To receive your Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH), you must verify your attendance during each of the noted times. CPMA is providing up to 25 Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH) during The 2023 Western Foot and Ankle Conference.
