PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to our 75th year! I am honoured to be your incoming president of the Calgary Petroleum Club. We kicked the year off with a strong start welcoming new members, hosting wait-listed events, and experiencing a liveliness and sense of optimism we have not felt since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The resilience of our team has been unprecedented, and it feels good to be coming back in a sound financial position and to see the energy activity at the club.

I want to thank Carey Arnett (Past President) for her dedication, particularly her efforts to grow the CPC’s young professional memberships and enhance our programming. The Board of Governors and our many volunteers through committees and members at large are hard at work, helping to lead and continuously improve the club through innovative programming, including over 140 events per week, and new initiatives within our walls, such as the Legacy Contribution Wall, Pioneer Room, Brew 319 work-bar, Prosecco Pop up Bar and our retail license so you can enjoy our impressive selections from our world-class cellar in the comfort of your own home if you choose. All this while continuing to offer great food and beverage options at the high standards our members enjoy.

As the premier gathering place for the Calgary business community for 75 years, I’d like to recognize you, our valued and loyal members. With you, our club has the thriving organization we have today. Calgary is experiencing significant transformation, and now more than ever, it is important that we honour our club’s legacy while we look to the future and continue to evolve to meet our member’s needs.

Through enhancing offerings to our membership, increasing outreach efforts to build our membership pipeline and incorporating contemporary learning initiatives, we will continue to provide a community where all professionals in and adjacent to our energy sector can connect, network, and learn from one another. The Calgary business community remains vibrant, and I look forward to helping to provide a meeting place where members and guests feel at home.

Over the next several months, members can look forward to many club events, including our annual Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Brunches, the Wellness Luncheon series featuring Dr. Grant Bartlett and a fantastic lineup of Stampede events, including the Doc Walker concert on Friday, July 14. The Board of Governors and the CPC staff warmly welcome you at these events as we begin the journey of our next 75 years. As always, you are encouraged to bring your friends, family, or professional colleagues to these initiatives to share with them all the wonderful things our club has to offer.

Our first 75 years were strong thanks to you, our members. If you have ideas for member events or improvements to our club as we look to the future, please send them to president@calpeteclub.com.

We are in this together, and I am delighted to celebrate turning 75 with you.

Best regards,

Canada, Alberta and Calgary: A Great Place to Live, Work, and Play

As Chair of the Council of Alberta Order of Excellence, I have had the opportunity to reflect on what makes Canada, Alberta, and Calgary great places to live, work, and play. Despite their imperfections, these places have tremendous potential to be worldclass destinations for people looking for opportunity, community, and quality of life.

Canada has established its reputation on diversity, inclusivity, and social justice. Consistently ranking among the top countries globally for quality of life, education, and healthcare, Canada’s natural landscapes are awe-inspiring, ranging from British Columbia’s rugged coastlines to Ontario’s pristine lakes and Alberta’s expansive prairies. The country boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene, a thriving economy, and a strong commitment to innovation and technology. Canada is a place where people feel safe, welcomed, and supported.

Turning our focus to Alberta, this province is often referred to as Canada’s economic engine. Thanks to abundant natural resources, a highly educated workforce, and a business-

friendly environment, Alberta has attracted worldwide investment. The energy sector has been particularly instrumental in fueling Canada’s economy for decades. However, Alberta is more than just oil and gas; it serves as a hub for agriculture, forestry, and technology. The province is home to world-class universities, research institutions, and hospitals, with cities like Calgary and Edmonton being modern, dynamic, and growing.

Now, let’s discuss Calgary. As a born and raised Calgarian, I have witnessed the city’s dramatic growth since my birth in 1962. It’s a truly remarkable place to live, and I’m not alone in thinking so. The Economist Intelligence Unit has named Calgary one of the best places in the world to live, and I wholeheartedly agree.

BACK
10 Club Connections / Spring 2023 CALGARY PETROLEUM CLUB
TO BUSINESS

Reflecting on the opportunities granted to my family and me, I feel immense gratitude for this city and province. My parents, both born in Alberta, returned to China before World War II and came back to Canada without an education and not speaking English. My father started with a small corner grocery store in Calgary’s Hayesboro, where I helped him when I was ten.

Looking back, I never would have imagined the places I’ve visited, the people I’ve met, and the experiences I’ve had. For that, I credit Calgary, Alberta, and Canada for providing these opportunities.

Calgary has afforded me unimaginable opportunities, testifying to the potential of this city and province. I eagerly anticipate witnessing our continued growth and prosperity in the years to come.

Having lived and worked in Calgary for many years, I can vouch for its unique charm. The city fosters an entrepreneurial spirit, with a highly educated and diverse workforce, a low cost of living, and an excellent quality of life. Our arts and culture scene is unparalleled, featuring worldclass museums, galleries, and festivals. Calgary is also home to some of North America’s most beautiful parks and green spaces, including Banff National Park, just a short drive away.

Of course, every place has room for improvement. Canada, Alberta, and Calgary face social inequality, climate change, and economic uncertainty. What sets us apart, however, is our willingness to confront these challenges headon, to innovate and adapt, and to build a better future for ourselves and future generations.

Having lived and worked in Alberta and Canada for many years, I know the quality of life and opportunities here are unmatched. While some may have complaints, I encourage them to maintain perspective and compare what we have here to other parts of the world. With hard work and determination, anyone can move to Calgary and achieve success.

Despite our country’s imperfections, most people would struggle to find a better place to live than Canada. Within Canada, it’s hard to surpass the quality of life and opportunity that Western Canada offers, especially in a city like Calgary. We have a vibrant economy, a diverse and educated workforce, world-class institutions and infrastructure, stunning natural landscapes, and a commitment to social justice and inclusivity.

While we undoubtedly face challenges, Alberta and Canada possess incredible potential to be world-class destinations for those seeking opportunity, community, and quality of life. As someone dedicated to promoting policies that enable the movement of opportunity in Western Canada, I will continue to work towards building a brighter future for all.

As Chair of the Council of Alberta Order of Excellence, I am committed to advocating for policies that advance opportunities in Western Canada.

We must invest in infrastructure, education, and research to stay competitive in the global marketplace. We must nurture a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship where people can take risks and pursue their dreams. Furthermore, we need to collaborate to create more inclusive and sustainable communities where everyone has a chance to thrive.

You can catch Gary Mar’s full interview on Calgary Petroleum Club’s Back to Business podcast.

Gary Mar is an accomplished and respected leader with experience in government and business, is appointed chair of the Council of Alberta Order of Excellence, he strives to create policies that will enable movement of opportunity in Western Canada, while acknowledging the irony of a place as imperfect as Canada being one of the best places to live.

Meet our new Bee Keeper

Bees are not new to the club, but they have a new keeper this year, and she is just sixteen years old. Anakena Swan is a second-generation beekeeper, who has been keeping bees since she was 6 years’ old.

Now the torch has been passed from father to daughter, and Anakena with her decade of experience already under her belt, is now in charge of our two hives on the club roof. Last years harvest, which she also assisted with, was a bumper harvest and we are hopeful this year’s production of honey will be as strong again.

The CPC honey will be available for purchase in the fall for $10 per jar.

Toni-Marie Ion-Brown: Fostering Connection, Collaboration, and Celebration at the Calgary Petroleum Club

Toni-Marie Ion-Brown, a small-town girl with big ambitions, has been making waves at the Calgary Petroleum Club for over three decades. Hailing from a rural Alberta village, Toni-Marie discovered her passion for people and her ability to connect with them during an exchange program in Japan. Since joining the club in 1990 as a server, she has risen through the ranks, ultimately becoming its first female General Manager in 2017.

Under her visionary leadership, Toni-Marie has driven significant changes within the club, fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment. “We’ve been able to adapt and grow by not getting bogged down in the details and focusing on creating an environment where work can happen,” she explains. She has transformed small offices into private rooms and embraced the digital age with the club’s unique podcast studio – a feature rarely seen in private clubs.

Members value privacy, which is why private rooms for confidential conversations are offered. The podcast studio allows the club to reach a wider audience, offering opportunities for diverse voices to be heard. Toni-Marie emphasizes, “Our podcast studio helps us connect with a broader audience, giving a platform to a range of perspectives.”

One exciting development is the Brew 319 work bar area, which transitions from a coffee workspace during the day to a Pro -

secco bar at 3 pm. This versatile space is essential as the club hosts 130 to 150 events per week, catering to the diverse needs of its members. Toni-Marie proudly states, “Our club is where Calgary does business, and as new businesses join and seek growth, they quickly realize that we facilitate connections and foster community.”

The membership is diverse, and the conversations that take place in private rooms and the Devonian room are invaluable. A member-to-member portion for events is offered, allowing members to invite each other to various gatherings, creating a friendly atmosphere. Accessibility is a priority, and the club offers an easy access point for those working downtown. As the city upgrades its infrastructure, like the new fiber-optic networks being installed, the club remains well-connected and convenient for members.

Toni-Marie describes the workshare space as having “a trendy, inviting vibe with a touch of

BACK TO BUSINESS

feminine and artistic flair, thanks to the design work of Kerri, Tony, and Glenda.” Since its reopening, she has noticed people frequently using the space to work, and many join the club specifically for a quiet place to work one or two days a week.

Within the club, various clubs like the Wine Club, Scotch Club, and Young Professionals Club cater to members’ interests. Members find the most success when they participate and build their network by attending events like the monthly member mixers.

Toni-Marie believes the key to success is being visible and approachable. She often interacts with members throughout the club, pouring coffee or serving food. By initiating conversations and following up with emails or coffee meetings, she creates meaningful connections that strengthen the club’s community. “Don’t be afraid to engage with others at the club; they’re here for a purpose, and you’re likely part of it,” she advises.

She encourages members not to be afraid to engage with others at the club, as they are all there for a purpose. Whether you’re a young professional or a seasoned entrepreneur looking to level up, there’s a place for you at the Calgary Petroleum Club. It’s a warm, inviting, and friendly place where business happens.

Joining the Calgary Petroleum Club opens up many doors, as it has 400 reciprocal clubs worldwide. Toni-Marie has been at the club for 33 years and is excited about the future. “As we celebrate our 75th anniversary in 2023 and with the Calgary economy picking up, it’s a great time to be a part of this club,” she enthuses. The club is even talking about waitlists again, a phenomenon not seen in years. The programming is exciting, and Toni-Marie is proud to work with her team. “I am continually amazed by the passion and dedication of our team here at the club. They make it possible for us to provide our members with the best possible experience.”

As the first female General Manager of the Calgary Petroleum Club, Toni-Marie Ion-Brown is a shining example of how to successfully navigate the world of business networking while staying true to her values of service excellence, respect, and personal connections. With her leadership, the club continues to evolve and thrive, providing its members with a welcoming and inclusive space to connect and grow.

Toni-Marie invites everyone to explore what the club has to offer: “Whether you’re just starting in your career or have decades of experience, there’s a place for you at the Calgary Petroleum Club. It’s a warm, inviting, and friendly place where business happens,

and lifelong connections are made. So come join us at the Calgary Petroleum Club – it’s the place to be.”

As Toni-Marie Ion-Brown continues to lead the Calgary Petroleum Club into the future, her unwavering commitment to service excellence, respect, and personal connections ensures that the club remains a cornerstone of the Calgary business community. With her at the helm, the club will continue to grow, adapt, and serve its members, fostering an environment where connections are made, and business thrives.

GARDENING TIPS FOR CALGARY’S UNIQUE CLIMATE

After a long winter, the arrival of spring deserves the red carpet treatment! There’s no better way to embrace the season than by getting down and dirty in your garden, terrace, or balcony, nurturing your green oasis in the heart of Calgary. From planning to planting, we’ve got you covered with expert tips to make your garden flourish.

Planning Your Garden

Before you get carried away buying plants, consider the conditions they need, the space available, the desired look, your budget, and unchangeable factors like sun exposure, wind, pets, and maintenance. Good soil is essential – avoid using garden soil in containers, as it’s too heavy and can harbor insects and diseases. Instead, replace last year’s container soil with fresh potting mix, and consider adding coffee grounds, tea leaves, and crushed eggshells for extra nutrients.

Calgary’s Alkaline Soil

Calgary’s soil is typically alkaline, with a pH of 7.5-8. You can test your soil’s pH using kits from garden stores or with a DIY vinegar and baking soda test. Alkaline-loving herbs, veggies, and perennials include lavender, parsley, oregano, asparagus, beans, garlic, Jacob’s ladder, bearded iris, columbine, daylilies, delphinium, hosta, shasta daisy, and yarrow. Fruit trees and shrubs producing fruit, like blueberries, prefer acidic soil.

Spring Garden Tasks

Now is the time to divide or thin out perennials, except peonies, which are a fall task. Remove dead wood from shrubs and roses, but wait until after lilacs have bloomed to prune them. Remove crossing and rubbing tree branches.

FEATURE 22

Seed Sowing and Container Planting

It’s too late to sow seeds outdoors now, except for sweet peas. Most annuals and perennial seeds should be sown in doors six to eight weeks before transplanting. You can plant containers and pots, but watch the weather, as delicate an nuals like begonias can’t tolerate low temperatures. Pansies, however, are foolproof. Acclimate newly purchased annuals by moving them inside and outside for three or four days.

First-Time Gardeners

If you’re new to gardening, try a container planting with a dracaena spike for height, geraniums as filler, and lobelia as a spiller. Deadhead spent blooms, and give lobelia a hard haircut in late summer.

Growing Your Own Food

Gardening is a perfect opportunity to grow your own food and spend quality time with family. After the May long weekend, you can plant seeds to avoid frost damage. Ensure your garden receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily and consider placing it near a fence for protection against severe weather. Take into account the sunlight and available space in your backyard to determine whether a container or gar den bed is the most suitable option. Consult the information on the seed package for guidance

Getting Your Garden Bed Ready

Begin by breaking up the soil and incorporating compost to enrich it with essential nutrients. Aim for an optimal com posted manure content of 10-30% of the overall soil volume. Vegetable compost should be added yearly, while animal composts can be applied every three years, as they contain higher salt concentrations.

Planting Seeds

Plant seeds according to the spacing and depth guidelines on seed packages, and buy starter plants for varieties with longer harvest dates, like tomatoes and peppers

• Spacing - is important so plants don’t compete for sunlight and nutrients, place taller plants near the back.

• Depth - don’t plant seeds too deep or they won’t come up or might not be as strong when they do.

• Starter Plants - it’s recommended to buy plants for varieties with a longer harvest date: tomatoes and peppers.

• Tips - For salad greens sow the seeds thickly and harvest with scissors. When the lettuce is 4 inches tall you can cut what you want to eat as they’ll grow back for several cuttings.

See page 24 for the Calgary Horticultural Society Seed Chart.

PARSLEY SHASTA DAISY HOSTA
23
COLUMBINE JACOB’S LADDER

With these helpful tips in mind, we hope you’ll be inspired to embark on your gardening journey. Begin modestly by planting a selection of your family’s most-loved vegetables, and relish the benefits of spending time outdoors and enjoying freshly harvested produce. For additional guidance, explore the City of Calgary’s website (calgary.ca/parks-rec-programs/at-home/gardening-beginner-vegetables) or consider becoming a member of the Calgary Horticultural Society (www.calhort.org).

CALGARY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SEED CHART

Calgary has a shorter growing season. It’s recommended to buy starter plants, instead of growing from seeds, plants that take longer to mature like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and melons.

*Days to harvest is the length of time from the seeding/transplanting date until you are able to start harvesting your vegetables

*If you did not start your own seeds for the vegetables listed as transplant visit your local garden centre to buy some starter plants

While we’ve enjoyed staying cozy all season with mulled wine and spiked hot chocolates, we’re more than a bit ready to embrace all three of these spring cocktail recipes (and how much they taste like straight-up sunshine in a glass).
