Delta Urbanism, 2013 The Mathematics of Thriving Cities The Upper 9th Ward, New Orleans, Louisiana A collaborative project with Carlos Paz Delta Urbanism recognizes the “latent talent of the landscape identified by Frits Palmboom in Drawing the Ground by inviting residents to reconnect with water, encouraging an adaptive land use strategy to alleviate blight and promoting a sustainable relationship with the natural systems that humanity must engage. By reorganizing the city according to its mathematical factors, [Population, Density, Area, Elevation, Risk, Benefit, Inundation, Value, and Cost] areas appropriate for human redevelopment or a return to nature emerge. The Upper 9th Ward falls in a zone appropriate for both wetlands and urban development.

mathematical derivation: relationships of driving forces within cities can be expressed mathematically, where any factor, X, exerts more influence than a related factor, Y, expressed as X > Y Some factors studied: R [risk of flooding] B [benefit of building] I [probability of inundation] P [population] D [density] Additionally, the city exists within the larger scope of urban ecology and delta urbanism. By identifying each square mile of the city by is dominating landscape feature, the city displays misalignment with the needs of its fragile environment, and a proposal for change realigns the city fabric by giving rank-size preference to the natural.

Food Plugs, 2011 Or, How to Solve the Food Desert Phenomenon Avondale, Cincinnati, Ohio A collaborative project with Alex Corbin, Leslie Deacon and Kelly Gillen, 2011 Food Plugs seeks to alleviate the hardship faced by Avondale residents when faced with needing to bring food home. Many residents live more than 2 miles from a grocery store, without access to a car. Food Plugs proposes a solution to the nearly innumerable problems by adding small, residentdriven food programming into the neighborhood, in identified and established community hubs. In order to cover most food centric needs, three corridors are established in the neighborhood to cover production, sale and identifying potential customers.

URBAN DESIGN 19

One & A Half Wards, 2012 Savannah Cultural and Civic Center Elbert Square, Savannah, Georgia Savannah’s urban structure in the historic core of the city is rigidly based in a ward system that, while walkable, struggles to yield to large civic programming. In 1971, the Civic Center opened on a lot composed of property from two wards in the city, having demolished two city squares and segmented the ward system in the district. The project, One and A Half Wards seeks to reconnect the urban fabric of the historic downtown with a pedestrian through-street, integrated bike lanes on two major lateral boulevards and cultural and residential architectural development while maintaining programming in the civic center.

VOLUNTEERISM 25

Volunteerism, 2008-2012 Though there are several names for design that engages an underserved community, I’ve found a universality in the passion and dedication in collaborators on projects where I have been able to engage and contribute. Design activism is defined not only in the ability to change unsatisfactory conditions but also in the ability to shape methods and mentalities at the global scale. I have been involved in design-build projects locally with Cincinnati’s Architecture for Humanity chapter and internationally with a student and professional organization focused on rebuilding Haiti, but have also brought my perception and sensibility as a designer to my year of service as an AmeriCorps member in school health and as a community organizer in my neighborhood.

PERMAGANIC BUILD DAY SUNDAY, MAY 6, 2012 9am - 1pm Permaganic Eco-Garden (1718 Main St, Cincinnati) Come join us in deconstructing used shipping pallets to transform them into multi-use growing boxes. We hope to see you there!

Steger, 2008 Public Space Sculpture Clifton, Cincinnati, Ohio During Summer Design Trailer Studio 2009, all enrolled pre-architecture students collaborated on the construction of a model based on the Steger Center on UC’s Main Campus. Made from reclaimed lumber planed down to 2”x2” sticks, assembled into pyramids and connected, the sculpture intended to reflect the changing nature of the perception of the building. The arch shifts in proportion and scale relative to the location of the viewer. The sculpture stood in the DAAP building courtyard for two months, and on exhibition in the front lawn of the Clifton Cultural Arts Center for two weeks.

Immersion Hong Kong, 2012 Research and Travel Hybrid Media in Architecture Urban Form and Spatial Analysis Hong Kong, China The opportunity to travel presented itself and I ventured to Hong Kong with two professors and nine classmates in late November 2012. While traveling, I enrolled in two courses, and thoroughly investigated the city during three weeks of long days spent in the city, meeting with architectural practitioners and engaging local architecture students. The unseasonably dismal weather presented the opportunity to study the city through an altered lens, and portfolio pieces submitted for the Hybrid Media course included the following images.
