25th Annual Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival Program Guide

Itwas2016,andIwasanewlysinglegaydad,workingfromhomewaybeforeit becameCOVID-fashionable.“Yougottagetoutandmeetsomepeople,Alex,”I thoughttomyself.“Somequeerpeople,preferably.”Andthat’showIstartedout withFairyTales.ThatfirstyearIworkedtakingticketsatthePlaza,whichwasfun–I gottoseealotofgoodfilms(forfree!)andmeetalotofgoodpeople,butitwasonly foraweek.Iwantedmore.

ThatmorecameafewyearslaterwhenIheardthatFairyTaleswaslookingfor volunteerfilmprogrammers.Ididn’tknowwhatitinvolved,butIknewIlikedthe organization,andIwasalreadyspendingwaytoomuchofmytimewatching movies,soIthoughtI’dgiveitawhirl.Itchangedmylife.

I’dlovetotellyouthathowitchangedmylifewasbyintroducingmetothetall, handsome,well-heeledphilanthropistwhoisnowmyhusband,butcomeon!Thisis afilmfestivalprogram,notaromancenovel.Sowhatdidchange?Ifoundmyvoice, andIfoundittalkingaboutfilmswithabunchofotherqueerpeople.Maybeitwasn’t somuchmyvoiceIfound,asthevoicesofallthoseotherprogrammers,responding toeachother’sthoughts,opinions,andexperiencesincludingmine,withattention, respect,andevenlove.

Becauseunlikewhatyoumightthink,whatfilmfestivalprogrammersdothat’s differentthanyouraverageNetflixviewerisn’twatchingmoremovies(thoughwe watchalot–wellover100forthisyear’sfestival),it’stalkingaboutthem.Andifyou spendhourstalkingaboutthingsthatmattertoyou,strangersbecome acquaintances,andacquaintancesbecomefriends.

WhenIfirsttalkedtomyfellowprogrammers,Iwasintimidated.Theyseemedso smart,soknowledgeable,sowithitinawaythatI–aguyinhis50swhothinks peoplestillsaywithit–couldn’tpossiblycompetewith.Butitwasn’tacompetition, itwasacollaboration,andaswemeteveryweek,Istartedlookingforwardtotheir thoughtsonthefilmswe’dwatched,andtohowthey’drespondtomine.Those WednesdayeveningZoommeetingsbecameahighlightofmyweek.

Lastyear,Marissa,thefestival’sirreplaceableprogrammingdirector,askedmeto programathemedeveningwithanon-filmartisticcomponent.Ichosetowritea coupleofpoemsfortheevening,andEmma,thenthefestival’sexecutivedirector, putmeintouchwithadancer.Thethreeofuscreatedaneveningoffilm,poetryand movementthatI’llneverforget.Thethemeoftheeveningwasloneliness,butasI greetedmyfellowFairyTalesprogrammers,mysonsandmyfriends,I’dneverfelt lesslonely.
