Treaty 7 is the last of the Numbered Treaties made between the Government of Canada and the Plains First Nations. It was signed on 22 September 1877 by five First Nations: the Siksika (Blackfoot), Kainai (Blood), Piikani (Peigan), StoneyNakoda, and Tsuut’ina (Sarcee).

The Calgary Queer Arts Society would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge that we operate on the traditional teritories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta which includes tha blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai First Nations), The Tsuu'tina First Nation and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley First Nations). This land is also home to the Metis Nation of Alberta Region III. We acknowledge and celebrate the traditional caregivers of this land and the importance of a committment to continued decolonization of our work for the dignity and equity of all.

About Our Festival The Fairy Tales Annual Queer Film Festival is a premiere event for queer culture in Alberta.

For 23 years, since 1998, The Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival has been bringing uniquely queer stories to the screen for audiences in and around Calgary. That adds up to over 1000 movies shown, all of which are made by, written, acted in, shot by and produced by queer artists from around the globe. Our unwavering commitment to showcasing and supporting queer artists translates into a loyal and steadily growing fan base who thirst to see themselves on celluloid. Representation matters. It can save lives.

In 2022 we enter our 24th edition of the festival. We will be back to LIVE screenings at The Globe Cinema but will continue to beam these films around the world. We will showcase over 40 films from documentaries, features, short films, animations plus panels, workshops and performances by local artists. ALL of whom identify with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. These artists deserve a platform to bring their stories to life and The Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival helps queer artists' work find a home and audience.

We are proud to be one of the largest LGBTQ2+ Film Festival in Canada, and one of few operating on the prairies. Our innovative approach launches film into the lived experience through events designed to engage the community in shared experiences and stories.

A total of 4K+ viewers on our digital platform in 2020/21 with folx from 21 countries.

Our Mandate Calgary Queer Arts Society is a non-profit, charitable organization located in Calgary, Alberta, that celebrates queer culture and artists through story-telling.

We are passionate about bringing new experiences to Albertans, and our vision is to promote diversity, inclusion, and community-building. In addition to our annual film festival, we provide year-round programming through allyship education (OUTReels), youth mentorship (Youth Queer Media Program), The Ally Toolkit Conference and The Coming Out Monologues, YYC. The Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival remains our largest program and is the heart of our organization!
