Business Of the Year

Sponsored by: Grand River Wealth Management

Strategy Construction: Strategy Construction is company that calls Caledonia home and employees locals. The quality of their work and attention to detail is outstanding! They are an excellent company that truly cares about their clients and goes out of their way to ensure the clients needs are well taken care of. Seeing the owners interactions with their staff shows that they truly do have their employees best interests in mind and that they actually care about them. I have dealt with many construction companies but I will only call one back to complete future renovations and that would be strategy construction.

Best Business … Period!

We have had work done by this company which has been exemplary but what I appreciate the most is all that they do for the community. Their annual Christmas fundraiser is a fun time for everyone and the effort the team puts in is over the top. The addition of collecting toys for kids this year was wonderful. They are a great group of people who are doing what they enjoy and giving back to the community they love

We started our first home renos in 2023 with Strategy Construction and we’re still working with them to this day on other projects and plan to have them continue with more!

From the beginning, they’ve been communicative, quick to respond, informative, and incredibly helpful through the process. It is clear that quality and customer satisfaction are their priorities. The staff take pride in their work and we’ve felt more than comfortable trusting them in our home and with our home.

Not only have they shown they provide top-tier service, they also display phenomenal community involvement. We attended their toy and food drive last year held at the Lions Hall and were surprised to see the effort put into making the event a family friendly, enjoyable time for all, while contributing to the community through the donations they were able to collect. Our nieces and nephew had a great time visiting with Santa and popular children’s characters (in costume). They also took advantage of the tabletop activities that were provided. I can only see this event growing larger and the donations more abundant every year.

I’m so grateful we chose to work with this company and we’ve been recommending their team to anyone who will listen. More than deserving of the Business of the Year award.

Fantastic company

We have worked with them for years and the consistently go Above and beyond to make their clients happy and have outstanding workmanship!

We decided to hire Strategy Construction because after interviewing multiple companies we felt they were like family. Every part of our renovation plans were heard and created. Mike the owner gave all his attention and made great suggestions to create our dream home. Strategy made any challenge easy, we worked out any issues with logistics of building supplies, or other suppliers especially during the pandemic. Ryan made all the schedules of the renovation & was consistent with informing us of all changes & connecting with suppliers. If you have any Reno’s or projects you must use this company, it will the best choice you make.

Strategy Construction is extremely professional and on time for appointments and is also very clear at communication

Dixon Cycle: Brian is always trying to give back to the community. Keeping people actively moving, focusing on physical fitness and people's well-being and mental health through the enjoyment of cycling. He has worked with St. Leonard's to provide donated and tuned bicycles for those less fortunate looking for jobs and needing a means of transportation. In 2022 Brian held Haldimand/Norfolk first 'Axtion Sports Jam' with HN REACH in support of Children's Mental Health with an amazing turn out and event at the Caledonia Skatepark for children and their families, demonstrating their skills in BMX, Scooter and Skateboarding! This event has now become an annual community event gaining bigger and better traction and involvement. He is on and working with the ‘Friends of La Fortune Park' committee and the county to bring riding trails to the park for the community to enjoy and to encourage tourism to Caledonia while still respecting the nature and beauty of the park and disc golf participants.. Brian has also welcomed many youth into the shop through coop or volunteer hrs who have shown an interest to teach them maintenance and bicycle repairs. He also sponsors several students and youth by providing them parts at cost and maintenance on their equipment at little to no cost to continually encourage them to get out and stay active and continue with their love and interest of the sport! Supporting and contributing to Caledonia and surrounding area is one of Brian’s top priorities. His perseverance, selflessness, hard working nature, commitment and dedication to his shop, customers and community are what makes him a huge part of Caledonia!

Darrick Davidson Heating, Cooling and Duct Cleaning: Darrick Davidson Heating, Cooling and Duct Cleaning has been around since 2010 and has a store front on the main street in Caledonia!

Not only do the positive role models on the teaching staff contribute significantly to the personal development of the students, but Caledonia Studio of Dance also goes the extra mile by offering opportunities for students to become classroom assistants. This unique initiative allows them to gain experience in leadership and responsibilities, ultimately fostering confidence in their abilities for future endeavours. On The 6 Design: Dave at On the 6 design is very meticulous and diligent! He always tries to make our clients happy at every turn. He is one of the many partners we have that we full confidence in. I would highly recommend using him for any or all design/engineering needs!

Young Reflections: I have been to this spa a few times now for things like Botox, filler, vitamin IV and fat blaster injections. The women that work here make me feel like I am with my best friends. The greeting I get when I walk in… it’s warm and inviting and it’s like they are excited to see me. Customer service like this is not the norm. They also host information events when they have a new product or program so that you can learn about new technology. They do complimentary consultations and I never feel like they are trying to upsell me on anything. Only inform me so I can make the best decision for me.

Cafecito House: Innovative and excellent quality and service

Sponsored by: Strategy Construction

Haldimand Photography Club: Led by Tony Maddalena, The Haldimand Photography Club was founded in 2015 by a group of photographers who wanted to enjoy regular photo shoots, workshops, and monthly speakers while sharing their knowledge/skills with other photographers in the Haldimand/Hamilton/Niagara area. The HPC gives its members the opportunity to advance their photographic skills, share knowledge, and display their work in a safe, fun, and supportive atmosphere.

Beyond all of this they carry the Haldimand name with them everywhere they go. They photograph events like the Around the Bay Road Race (Hamilton), and honed their wildlife photography skills at the Canadian Raptors Conservancy (Vittoria, ON) and outdoor photography at Balls Falls (Lincoln).

Here in Haldimand they have conducted photo shoots at Cottonwood Mansion, held annual public exhibitions at Edinburgh Square and shared knowledge about dog photography, macro & low key photography, and black & white photography. They also teach members the commercial side of photography by staging mock-wedding photo shoots.

The Haldimand Photography club values collaboration over competition, and supports their members as they grow in the craft.

The Haldimand Photography Club began in 2015, with the assistance of the curator at Edinburgh Square, where we began meeting. The HPC is now a major photography club in Southern Ontario. We serve our members by keeping our meetings within Caledonia, we have a public web site and a private Facebook page for members to post their work and communicate, plus we manage to keep the annual fees very reasonable. We provide professional speakers at our monthly meetings, plus workshops and several photo events. During Covid, we even ran on-line meetings! Our members range from beginner to professional level photographers from Haldimand and surrounding areas. There's something for everyone. We promote learning opportunities, support, socialization and FUN! We are not a competitive photography club. Our speakers educate us on aspects of all genres of photography from babies to street! Our photo events often follow up with an outing to practice. In addition, we have workshops on several different topics, from Beginning photography, Lighting, etc. The HPC has always supported and been involved with the Caledonia and Haldimand and surrounding communities. We have offered promotional images for Ruthven Mansion, Richardsons Farm, the bicycle race, the Hamilton Around the Bay race and others. We have been published in the Haldimand Press. Our members take part in the photo contests. We have annual photo art shows at Edinburgh Square, and shows at Haldimand Art Works and the art museum in Cayuga. We have an annual booth at the Caledonia Fair. Many of our photo events take place within the Haldimand area, such as Canadian Raptors Conservancy, Cottonwood Mansion, Ruthven Mansion, etc. We are a membership led club. The HPC committee works to provide its members with what the members request. It is not a "president" led club. The committee is made up of volunteer 'coordinators,' instead. So the needs of the members are put first. It's a wonderful club that exists because of the wonderful people in it! And it's a LOT of FUN!!

6

The club provides a great environment for learning about photography. Guest speakers, workshops and outings give members opportunities to explore a variety of genres of photography and to learn about their equipment. The members are friendly and willing to share their knowledge.

In 2022 Mark spend the winter in Texas getting his certificate for RV Technician and is now full time with his business working all over Ontario.

Drip Hot Yoga: Drip Hot Yoga is building a wonderfully inclusive community. A community where everyone is welcomed with a smile.

Sara and her team work hard to make sure everyone that walks through the door feels at home.

Even though Drip Hot Yoga is still a fairly new business, the studio has made such a positive impact on Haldimand County.

Dixon Cycle : Dixon Cycle transitioned from a brick-and-mortar business to a storefront in November 2020. Facing the difficult times and challenges of the pandemic and the economy since opening, they have continued to push through with the loving support of the community. Their top priorities are their relationships with customers, contributing to and supporting the community, and promoting physical and mental fitness and well-being through cycling and staying active. The importance of the connections they make with their customers and other local businesses is shown through their commitment and dedication, going above and beyond with exceptional service and the relationships they build. Dixon Cycle continues to give back and support the community in many ways and loves to be involved in local events. They aim to provide a boutique-like atmosphere for shopping, offering unique programs and events such as Bicycle Maintenance and Roadside Repair Clinics, a Free Skills & Development Program for children aged 5-10 years old, and the Annual Action Sports Jam Event in collaboration with Haldimand/Norfolk REACH in support of Children’s Mental Health.

Baby Barn Boutique: A mother-daughter team born and raised in Caledonia who share an addiction to babies, babies and everything babies. This is a great small town micro brewery offering amazing beers all with local themes from sourcing hops and grains to disposal of used grains with local farmers even the art work for the cans is based on all local places and drawn by local artist. Love this place, love the beer!

Stephen's Oranje Son Brewery is a great little place to visit in Caledonia! Stephen is always happy to chat about his growing operation which expanded to supply one of the local restaurants with a unique craft beer this year.

Oranje Son is a creative yet immaculately run business with an amazing product. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable in his craft and enjoys sharing his expertise with interested visitors to the store.

Oranje Son Brewery is deserving of the award because I believe the business brings people into the community. Craft Beer is a desired commodity and people from all over have come to visit this brewery. While in the brewery, I was part of conversations with customers who have google ‘craft breweries near me’ and visit Oranje Son Brewery. The owner, Stephen, is passionate and knowledgeable about his product - willing to engage and explain the process. And to top it off, Stephen makes great beer.

Caledonia Orthodontics: Caledonia Orthodontics is the only specialty dentistry clinic in Haldimand County. They provide orthodontic treatment to patients of all ages - from age 7 to 77. Caledonia Orthodontics has shown commitment to exceptional patient care, innovative treatment approaches, and community engagement. They prioritize personalized service, utilize cutting-edge technology, and actively participate in local events, demonstrating their dedication to both their patients and the community they serve. They sponsor multiple youth sports teams such as the Haldimand Heat, Haldimand River Kings, and Caledonia Thunder. They held a “Halloween candy buy back” initiative donating the candy to the Caledonia Food Bank and this past summer they also were a proud sponsor of the summer movie night in the park.

Cafecito House: Cafecito House opened in December (I believe) and has been shared by numerous community members on social media so frequently with positive feedback!

As someone who works from home, having a local coffee *DELIVERY* option is amazing! The quality of their beverages is phenomenal. As Canadians, we love our Tim’s, but sometimes a REAL coffee beverage is desired and CH hits that spot! And their croissants are so buttery, nothing compares anymore. The online ordering process couldn’t be easier. The owners are so sweet, eager to please, and so humble and grateful it’s easy to want to support them.

As a home-based food service business, people on social media were fast to assume they were operating illegitimately, but the business went so far as to share their operating license to appease that concern.

This small business is providing the town with a much appreciated service and delicious product and our community members have been excited to share their experiences in the local Facebook groups. These posts have started positive conversations amongst the community and it’s so great to see a new, small, local business being the source of these happy interactions. :)

Right before Christmas he took over operations at the skate sharpening store inside the Caledonia Arena caring for hundreds of young skaters and taking this financial risk right before Christmas. He works every day at both locations and I am so proud of him. And the work over here he is making on Haldimand County. He has received several five star reviews on Google from parents that he took care of at the very last minute. He is supporting hockey for youth and Cayuga, Caledonia, and all of our local teams… His name is Jeff Small and he’s truly amazing.

K9 Principles: Our family joined a class with K9P last April. We entered the class with a dog who was unable to walk on a leash. Our son enjoyed the classes so much and took over all of the training of our dog Kelly, Dave and the K9P team has been outstanding with their support and encouragement of our son. They have gone above and beyond to help him be successful. They have offered him so many learning opportunities not to better themselves or their business but for our son’s well being. The kindness they have shown a 12 yr. old boy will never be forgotten. After two years of our son struggling with back and feet pain, the K9P team has helped him to find his passion and foster growth, confidence and most of all happiness. The kindest group of people you will ever meet! The only thing bigger and better than their knowledge of dog training is the size of their hearts! They deserve this award 1,000 times over!

Her classes are fun and challenging. Her clientele has grown exponentially since she opened in September 2023. I think she is very deserving of the new business award.

HDI Electrical Service LTD: Ian Haynes and his team at HDI Electrical Services are go to people in our community. Each year for the past six years Ian and his team have taken time away from their business responsibilities to help put up and take down all the Canadian flags and Veteran Banners. Ian was a big part in getting the new LED sign coming into town up and running. Ian was able to give the BIA a cut rate for his services. Ian helps at both the Santa Claus Parade and Canada Day parade. He has served on the executive at our Legion Branch 154. Again providing help with projects there. Cafecito House: Cafecito House is a home-based coffee and baked goods service that runs out of the Avalon community. They offer pickup and delivery options across Caledonia.

Exceptional service with delicious drinks and food.

We are a 100% family-owned business, where each of us plays a vital role, from conceptualizing the business idea to its day-to-day operation. Our motivation stems not from financial gain, but from our genuine passion for serving others and connecting with new people, all while delivering exceptional coffee experiences. Since our launch on January 8th, we have been overwhelmed by the incredible support from our community.

I believe this business is such a phenomenal idea and truly one of it’s kind. I love that their coffee comes from their home to ours. So much love in every product! Thank you!

Never seen anything like it from home

Very professional and outstanding service. Product quality is unlike any other. Deserves to win this award.

They are a beautiful family with a great coffee business

This family has worked very hard to get where they are! The dedication of bringing us the best tasting coffee in town shows.

Butter & Creme: I initially met owner Samantha and her partner when I hosted a Wedding show at my clinic, Young Reflections in 2023. They were not only professional, but super friendly, engaging with event goers. Their product samples were unique, fresh and delicious.

I happened to see they had a food truck at Caledonia’s Canada Day celebrations. My husband and I were met with huge smiles, and excitement as I believe this was their first day out with the food truck. The food was AMAZING! It was a mix of sweet and savoury Jamaican style which I believe is their signature. I then ordered custom cupcakes later in the year.

13

Samantha made sure every detail was perfect! They were exactly what I asked for and were again delicious. This business is a hidden gem in our community and definitely deserves to be recognized.

I created Butter & Creme out of passion for practicing my skill and it absolutely took off and actually became my main focus on the heights of the pandemic. My small humble beginnings turned into a well known small business in our community. While, I am not a commercial business with the fancy gadgets I have still managed to create beautiful and delicious things.

The owner is amazing to deal with and provides an amazing product

K9 Principles: Outstanding business that helps and supports locals with dog training. Helping control dogs and training people, when out walking in the community

She does this through a client cantered approach, which focuses on the individuals entire well being- and helps build a mindset surrounded by sustainable and wellness driven life style changes. I would like to add she does all this while making you feel like she is biggest supporter and friend.

PC YARD SIGNS: Paige started this business at the age of 16 during Covid. She was seeing how everyone was affected with their celebrations and milestones. Paige decided to use her saving and buy her first birthday lawn sign, and after a few rentals she was able to expand her sign selection. Paige has been able to maintain her business while attending first year university! She has hired on her sister Kenzie and as a duo they are able to give the residents of Caledonia and surrounding areas a reason to smile and celebrate! From birthdays, to anniversaries to retirement and more! Paige hopes to expand the business once she completes her teachers program to continue to bring joy to the community!

They participate in Community evens such as the Santa Clause Parade (handing out popcorn) and Community Businesses Father's Day Draw! Staff are always involved in some way or another.

There are lots of team meetings which keeps us communicating and on the same page.

Special days are recognized, i.e birthdays and work anniversaries; everyone loves a little cake!

I'm proud to work for Darrick Davidson Heating, Cooling and Duct Cleaning!

Caledonia Studio of Dance: Positive environment, good leadership.

This business is the most inspiring, uplifting, positive place to work. They have such an amazing positive impact on the youth in our community and create such a welcoming culture. It is such a light in our little town!

CSOD is a very positive and friendly atmosphere. They are very encouraging of their staff and students and every one is like family.

Such positive energy from owner which makes all employees, staff so positive which in return clients have positive energy which is needed in our youth!

Royal Canadian Legion Caledonia: The executive makes all employees feel valued and respected. As an employee we get to feel a valued part of the community as we assist with Remembrance day services and events, veterans dinners, hosting catch the ace and helping raise money for the community, an example was selling bird houses to raise money for canine therapy for veterans with PTSD. As we let local organizations use our space we get to share in special moments like when the under 9 yrs. old Caledonia basketball team that won the provincials and received their trophy rings, a very exciting moment for parents and children. Getting to interact with a variety of seniors who stop by to play cards, or watching the faces of the people who come to hear live music twice a month. It is a fun place to work as we feel like one big family.

Grand River Dinner Cruises: Grand River Dinner Cruises is not only the best place to work in Caledonia; it’s the best place to work, period! As one new Captain phrased it; “I’ve been looking for this place (to work at) all my life”. The co-owners (Dana Johnson and her brother Blain Albin), and our Operations Manager, Beau Johnson (Dana’s husband) always treat their staff with courtesy and respect, and they continuously let us know that we are appreciated and valued.

Training in all aspects of all positions is undertaken with patience, and questions regarding the performance of duties are welcomed and are thoroughly explained. Courses in additional qualifications (such as First Aid, CPR and AED) are offered (at no cost to us) and the staff is expected to attend in order to improve our abilities to serve the public with confidence and competence.

When problems are encountered, solutions/repairs are made expeditiously. Suggestions about how to improve our services/product at GRDC are welcomed and often adopted with little or no delay.

Dana, Beau and Blain also organize an annual staff canoe trip where we staff members can relax and enjoy each other’s company in a social, rather than professional, capacity; an ‘End of Season’ dinner is catered prior to the staff who are students returning to their studies. A gift for each employee and Service Awards are presented during this event. As GRDC has been operating for over four decades, many staff members have contributed to the success of the company while on their way to professional careers and all are welcomed back when they visit. We’ve met former Captains and Servers and all have stories about the enjoyable times they spent working here. It’s not often you see and hear such enthusiasm from former employees about their old workplace! Now, having undergone the GRDC experience, I completely understand how they came to feel that way.

I respectfully submit Grand River Dinner Cruises to you as ‘Best Place to Work’ for your (hopefully) favourable consideration.

I'm a Captain in training. Since day one I felt like family. I have spent hours with Blain alone training on the boats. I have hit the dock several times! Luckily no passengers while training. He never gets inpatient and remains calm and encouraging. His sister Dana is just as nice! I have never seen a company so professional, friendly, clean , who are always looking on customer and staff input for pleasing everyone! GRDC go above and beyond for everyone.

They also do canoe outings, dinners and Christmas parties for the staff.

As I am entering my 11th season with the "Boat Farm" I can't help the feeling of coming home. From day one I have felt like I am working with family. This family run business is truly that. The whole family participates in the daily hustle and bustle of running a smooth ship, so to speak. Never have I worked anywhere where you are more than just an employee. They invest the time to make you the best you can be in your position. They provide all the necessary training for you to be a successful employee. They work side by side with you and ask for input to make their business run as smoothly as possible. As a new employee you are welcomed and treated as equally as the most senior employees. They show appreciation of all your hard work with raises, dinner and staff outings such as a day trip canoeing on The Grand. I am a proud team member of the Grand River Dinner Cruises and hope to continue working for this local, family and community oriented business for many more years.

It's the best place to work because the owners and bosses are so kind and sweet, they understand that their employees also have a life outside of work. They are always accommodating when it comes to their employees availability compared to other places and it is greatly appreciated. The job itself is a lot of fun and you get a Meet so many new people everyday and the fellow employees are sweet and kind it's very much a team effort no one is ever stuck doing all of the work. You Get to work on a boat and do fun safety lessons that is not boring.

I would like to nominate Grand River Dinner Cruises for your consideration as Best Place to Work.

This is a unique business that offers a wonderful lunch or dinner while cruising the Grand River between Caledonia and Onondaga, from May to October. Three boats are in operation, with two comfortably accommodating up to 45 passengers, while the third holds 48. GRDC goes out of their way to make certain that patrons enjoy their experience; meal options for special dietary needs are provided, accessibility needs are met, and the staff are kind, courteous and

16

friendly to all.

As an employee myself (approaching 8 years), I have to say that Grand River Dinner Cruises is a heavenly place to work and spend time in. It’s simply the best I’ve ever known. The owners of the business, Blain Albin and Dana Johnson, and our Operations Manager, Beau Johnson (who is married to Dana,) are not only our employers, but they also go above and beyond by making us feel that we truly are members of one big, loving and caring family. When personal problems arise, scheduling accommodations are willingly made and there's always someone who is willing to listen, and provide help if needed. Conflicts within the team are exceedingly rare, but if they do happen they are resolved immediately and firmly, with kindness and consideration. And Blain, Dana and Beau are highly protective of their employees - rudeness and negative behaviours from passengers are not tolerated. It's rare to find employers who look after their workers of all positions so well.

Extensive training is provided for every position, plus additional training in First Aid, CPR and AED operation for all of which the company covers the cost. Thus, these folks make sure that every staff member is knowledgeable, competent, team-oriented and fully capable of handling any situation that may arise. Our input on ways to improve the business –comments, suggestions and recommendations – is not only encouraged and welcomed, it’s often adopted, either immediately or soon after.

Opportunities to relax together on a social basis outside of work are provided for us during our boat season. Each year, a canoe trip (with food) is organized by Blain, Dana and Beau; it's open to all employees, past and present and a great time is had by all. Towards the end of the season a catered dinner for all at GRDC is presented as well; this is scheduled specifically to accommodate the servers, most of whom are students who will be returning to their studies soon after. At this particular event, a gift of appreciation is given to each employee in recognition of the efforts made to ensure that each boat season has been a happy and successful one. Service Awards are also given during this event, to staffers who have reached 5, 10, 15, or 20-year employment with the company. Also, former employees are always welcomed with open arms at any time; on these occasions we are often regaled with stories of their own delightful experiences at GRDC.

Above all, our employers make sure we all know that we are valued, respected, and a major element of the company’s 40+ year success story. On a near-daily basis, we are assured that we matter! As a result, our trust and confidence in our employers are well-placed and fully deserved. Grand River Dinner Cruises deserves recognition as not only the best place to work, but also as the best place to play. No other employer I’ve known has gone as far to make sure that every member of its staff is happy and well cared for! (Not to mention well-fed!)

I have been waiting all year to nominate the Grand River Dinner Cruises for Best Place to Work. I will be returning to my job there in May for my sixth year in a row as a server and a bartender, and I am just one of countless employees who also return year after year. I have had eight jobs and volunteer positions in the past, and I can say with absolute certainty that this is the best job I have ever had. I didn’t know that at 20, I could have the experience of being excited to go to my job every day. I don’t experience the dread of going to work when I’m at the Cruises (or Boat Farm, as the staff usually call it). It’s not just the great hours, the flexible schedule, getting to work outside, the beautiful scenery from the boats, and the fact that I met one of my best friends there; it’s the environment created by my bosses.

Beau Johnson, Dana Johnson, and Blaine Albin are not just the best bosses I have ever had, but they are some of my favourite people. The other wait staff and I interact most frequently with Beau, and I was shocked in my first year at how willing he was to correct our mistakes, offer second chances, and allow us to grow and learn which he still does now. Beau has cultivated a staff of hard workers who know their jobs inside and out because they were given the chance to fix their errors and learn from them. Beau, Dana, and Blaine like to hire employees who will be able to return for a few years, so they hire a lot of teenagers, and I have never met any people as well-suited to manage teenagers. Perhaps from having parented teenagers themselves, they know how to be disciplinary but also how to laugh with us. I feel safe at Boat Farm, and I never doubt that my bosses care about their employees. They are truly so kind, and it rubs off on the rest of us, who have become almost like a family. When I was sixteen and realized I didn’t have a lot of gas in my car right before I had to drive home, Blaine offered to put gas in my car right there at work. When I found a sheet of stickers in one of the boats and jokingly offered one to Beau, he walked around with a little gold star on his hand for an entire shift. When I got a concussion last summer and couldn’t work for a week, Dana checked in on me almost every day, not to see when I could return to work but because she wanted to make sure I was ok. All three of them make sure we’re hydrated and safe, every day. I wish everybody could experience having such a kind, warm environment to spend their

17

workdays at, because it very literally improves my mental health to go back to Boat Farm in the summers. Beau once told me that the average Boat Farm employee comes back for seven seasons before they leave, which is very impressive but it also did not surprise me at all. I’m so thankful every year for this job, and for the connections I have made there. I promise that nobody deserves this award more than the Grand River Dinner Cruises.

I am 61yrs old and in all of my life’s endeavours I have never worked for anyone as welcoming and supportive as Blaine, sister Dana and husband Beau. There is still something special to FAMILY RUN BUSINESSES. They CARE about every employee and every guest. I am so lucky to have found peace at work. When anyone asks me now, “where are you working?” I reply simply, “PLEASANTVILLE!!!!!”

Blain is a great boss/leader, and has always shown great care and appreciation for his staff.

Grand River Dinner Cruises creates a working environment that reflects this family businesses focus on keeping a smile on their customers faces, ensuring staff have fun while they are at work, keeping everyone safe, while being open and flexible, actively seeking employee ideas and suggestions, and going that extra mile to be attentive to the personal circumstances of each individual. The end result is happy co-workers who keep coming back every year, a cheerful and rewarding workplace and a valuable destination which draws visitors to our area to enjoy the hospitality of their hosts at Grand River Dinner Cruises.

Excellent management, treat staff with respect and show them confidence in there work.

Mr. J's Taxi: Mr. J's Taxi is a great place to work because the owner and his Office Manager treat their employees with 100% respect and kindness. Which is how they've been family owned for almost 30 yrs. There is a calm and positive voice when the drivers call in for help and advice. Mr.J's "asks" and never "tells" and always "please" and "thank you". I know every shift the owner has my best interests and safety in mind. Your voice will always be heard when discussing any problems with an outcome that both employee and owner are happy with.

They also give back to the community as with Light Up Night with free hot chocolate and Movie Night in the Park with free cold water.

You won't find a better family to work with and for.

Everyday working for Mr. J's Taxi is a great day!

SheDo Tax Company: I have worked for SheDo Tax since its opening! Kelly Rust has put a lot of time and effort into growing an incredible work culture of work hard and play hard. Strategy Construction: He’s a great guy to work for. He has helped me get to know a lot more about construction and how to do things properly. Not only just with construction but other areas of life as well. He will help you out any way he could.

I have been a part of a couple home renovation companies over my years, Michal treats the team with the upmost respect. He always does what's right, no matter the cost. He continues to help make each and everyone of the guys he works with better! He is so humble, but deserves to know that he is the back bone that makes Strategy Construction operate effectively. The construction world would be better with more guys like Mike running the show.

Strategy Construction specializes in residential interior and exterior renovations. I've been working there since 2021 and Michal, the owner and my boss is a great man to work for and I'm blessed and proud to be a part of his team. We work a lot in Caledonia and the surrounding area and we are happy to provide solutions to members of the community to meet all their renovation needs. Being from Caledonia myself I can honestly say I take pride in the work that we do and knowing that I'm helping to serve fellow members of my community. Michal is fair and honest who operates with the utmost integrity and he leads by example and in turn this influences us as employees to operate in the same way when

18

serving out clients. I'm proud of the work we've done for members around the community and abroad and I'm proud to work for Strategy Construction.

Michal Strugala as the owner and president treats his employees with respect and provides a great working environment. His leadership and communication encourages our team to work well together and develop great relationships with one another.

Canadian Tire Caledonia: There are many reasons why Canadian Tire Caledonia (CTC) is the best place to work, but at its heart is the care of owners Greg and Nikki Honour. The Honours foster a work environment that offers opportunities for team members of all ages to continue their growth, including learning customer service skills, team building, and recognizing the value of hard work.

On my first day working with the Honours, I was introduced to their vision: to be a good neighbour, try new things, and turn every visitor into a lifelong customer. This vision rings true through their ongoing innovation and kindness to all team members and community.

Last year, Canadian Tire Corp introduced an internal recognition program called ‘Team Challenge’, to promote and reward tangible Customer Service & Sales metrics. This year, Caledonia took second place! The Honours used the prize money to give back to staff members by crafting a Team Challenge Snack Bar, providing staff lunches, snacks, drinks, and even added a foosball table! To further boost team spirit, the Caledonia store implemented a STAFF SHOUT OUT board for employees to celebrate their team members. Additionally, our HR Specialist created an in-store Employee of the Month program to recognize outstanding contributions with a celebratory lunch and official crowning ceremony.

In the past year, CTC has raised over $13,500 for the Jumpstart program, aiding children in overcoming financial and accessibility barriers to sports and recreation. The company also sponsors numerous Haldimand sports organizations and contributes to community events such as Caledonia’s fair, BIA Easter Egg Hunt, Mothers Day Basket, Christmas joy drive, and Santa to a Senior program.

The culture of the CTC team is founded on inclusivity, growth, and learning opportunities. Last year, we welcomed co-op students to gain hands-on experience with the team, helping to kickstart the youth of the community's careers.

Greg and Nikki, we've never worked for more generous, caring, and amazing people. You have truly made our work environment feel like family. Your involvement and joy are inspiring, and It's a pleasure to work for such an amazing family!

Two Row on the Grand: Established in 2013, The Two Row on the Grand canoe paddle is an embodiment of the Two Row Wampum – the original peace treaty between indigenous and settler communities. We envision an annual canoe trip where participants, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, build mutual respect and understanding of individual values and culture through sharing the river, meals, campgrounds, mutual aid, cultural/environmental teachings, friendship and summer fun.

I nominate this organization as the owner of this organization lives on Six Nation which is considered within the Caledonia and region area. This trip stops a two locations in Caledonia. First LaFortune Park, for lunch and second the Caledonia Fairgrounds where they cam overnight. Bothe after lunch and later that evening they also host a guest speaker to deliver talks anout Truth and Reconciliation.

Harrison Landing: Duane and Tammy Boychuk have helped make the Grand River near Caledonia a destination for boaters from all over Southern Ontario.

After taking over Harrison Landing about 20 years ago, Duane and Tammy have invested much time and money into the property. Every year, there are improvements like new docks and picnic tables, a modern sign and more attention to maintaining the grounds and boat ramp. With the addition of a food truck in 2023 the park is even more of an attractive destination for families who want to enjoy the day on the Grand River.

20

For most of the hundreds of visitors, a day pass is the best choice but the fact that many regular visitors from as far away as Toronto take advantage of the season pass is proof that Harrison Landing has become a highly rated boating destination. For this reason I would like to nominate Duane and Tammy Boychuk of Harrison Landing for the Carol Ritchie Scotch Thistle, Best Tourism Provider award.

Caledonia Legion: As the host for the Caledonia Catch the Ace, the Caledonia Legion has become a destination for many out-of-towners to try their chances at "Catching the Ace." For this same reason it is easy to say that the Caledonia Legion has provided Caledonia residents a Thursday destination where they can participate on the lottery and gather with friends and enjoy come good cheer.

Biker's Haven: Since 2015, Heather Wilson has been operating Biker's Haven out of the Haldimand House building. At first she shared space within the main shop. More recently she has expanded to occupy her own separate room in Haldimand House.

Focusing on biker and blue-collar lifestyle fashion for both men and women, Heather always has her finger on the pulse of these ever evolving fashions trends.

Over the past 10 years Biker's Haven has developed a loyal group of customers that come from all over southern Ontario. Heather takes advantage of the Friday 13th events in Port Dover by organizing her Moto Markets. In this unique market, a number of featured vendors set up outside the Haldimand House on the following Saturday to attract riders returning home from Port Dover.

Biker's Haven has been the reason for many people from from far and wide to make a stop in Caledonia. Because of this, I feel Heather deserves to be nominated for the Carol Ritchie Scotch Thistle Best Tourism Provider award.

Kathy Marshall: Kathy goes above and beyond her position as Coordinator for the Caledonia BIA! Her dedication and commitment to Caledonia and local businesses are evident in everything she is involved in. She is caring and compassionate about her role and the relationships she builds throughout the community. She is thoughtful, authentic, and inclusive of all local businesses and the community as a whole. As small business owners in Caledonia, we appreciate the time and effort Kathy puts into her role and cannot express enough the gratitude we have for her and all that she does to help local businesses thrive in such trying times! Thank you, Kathy!

Mike Montgomery: Mike Montgomery is well overdue for being recognized in Caledonia. Mike started entertaining our community with Christmas lights during his early teen years. For years, people would drive by his family home on Highland Ave to hear the music and see the lights celebrating the Christmas season. With the help of his friend Adam Harrison, he then started decorating the Caledonia Mill. They spent hours setting up computer programs and lights to decorate the mill. People came from all over to see the display. It was seen on local television and it also made its way onto YouTube. Each year the lights and sound grew. The display at the mill became one of the biggest attractions in Caledonia. Tourism expanded in our area because of the beautiful presentation. Once the mill was sold, Mike had to come up with a new plan. With the support of Caledonia Community Foundations, the display was moved to Kinsmen Park in downtown Caledonia. Each year more lights and displays are added. Adam moved on, leaving the work solely in Mike's hands. The display keeps growing each year. It's not uncommon to find Mike in the wee hours of the morning in the Clark's barn, stringing lights and making new displays. He spends hours programming the computer to ensure the lights come on in perfect succession. Mike coordinates all display installations. With the help of his family and Special Projects, Mike ensures that everything is ready for Light Up Night. The year the lights were vandalized a day before Light Up Night, Mike dug in even more to make sure our community was not disappointed. He installed a security system to

help prevent any more issues. He is always on call to troubleshoot any problem that comes up. Mike sits on the Community Foundations board and is also a member of Special Projects.

I honestly feel Mike is worthy of this award. He continues to help make Caledonia a more beautiful community.

responsible for designing, manufacturing, installing and removing of the Christmas decorations and displays in the kinsman park. All work on a volunteer basis

Mike’s is the main driver for the new lights in the Kinsmen Park, design, construction, installation, operations, removal, repair.

Mike has been the driving force, brains and creative lead on Caledonia's Holiday lights for over a decade. His tireless commitment to this has brought so many smiles to people from Caledonia and afar. Mike works unprecedented hours building new lights, maintaining existing and of course putting up and taking down the lights. He always takes vacation to ensure they get done and it would be mind boggling to know the financial investment he has made over the years. He is truly an unrecognized pillar of our community.

He heads the special projects lighting display in and around Caledonia. As well as many other projects .

Organizing Christmas lighting at the park.

Mike has spent many years creating, designing and executing Christmas light up night for Caledonia. He spends the whole year preparing for light up night. He then spends 2 months prior to Christmas light up night hanging and decorating the park for the event. He even takes vacation time to make sure all lights are up and functioning for this main event. Mike should be seriously considered for Citizen of the year.

Mike is the person responsible for the Christmas light up display in the Kinsmen park in Caledonia. While he has help in the installation of the display he alone designs and maintains these Christmas displays. He is at this time maintaining/repairing the current displays and designing new display for this upcoming Christmas season display. This will continue to take up all of his spare time including at least a week’s personal vacation time to make this very popular event that people not only from Caledonia but also tourists from the surrounding area have come to look forward to every year. Without Mike and his year round time and effort there is no Christmas in the park.

Mike has been a pivotal reason we have been able to put the Christmas decorations in the park. Mike does all the programming of the lights. Mike takes a week of his vacation to assemble the decorations. He has designed the majority of the Christmas displays. The displays are built months before they are installed. Mike does all this work quietly and expecting nothing in return. I believe Mike is an excellent candidate for Citizen of the Year.

Mike has spent several years creating and installing many creative and outstanding artifacts for Kinsmen Park and the town of Caledonia.

I’ve known Mike for several years through Special Projects. The work he does, the countless hours he puts in is nothing short of amazing. Special projects works closely with Mike on ideas we have and he puts them into reality. Light up night is one example.

Steve Skidmore: I constantly see him volunteering and helping around town. He does so humbly and never expects anything in return. He does a lot for our community and I think this would be a great show of how thankful our community is for him.
