— C.S. Lewis As we head into 2019, we can’t help but reflect on the past year. The majority was good, but as a community, we were derailed at the end—first by the tragic and senseless Borderline shooting right here in our own backyard and then, without time to come up for air, by the fires that broke out here and in our neighboring communities.

We are still trying to find a degree of normalcy and many of us continue to be out of sorts. The one thing that has come out of these horrific events is that everyone in the community has come together to help each other. There has been tremendous outpouring of love and support by all the neighboring communities for the Borderline families and those affected by the fires.

The New Year brings reflection on what we need to change or improve. Maintaining health is always at the top of that list, and so, we provide you with a trusted physician and healthcare provider directory to make it easier. In addition, our MOVE section offers a variety of fitness facilities to help you get fit.

THE ATRIUM GRAND OPENING

The Atrium, a new high-class cannabis dispensary, held its grand opening on November 27 in Woodland Hills. The store concept, described as an “elevated cannabis experience,” lived up to its reputation and exceeded the expectations of all who had the opportunity to partake in the festivities.

Guests describe the showroom as that of a high-end jewelry store, with gleaming hardwood floors, marble counters, glass-topped cabinets and displays, open ceilings, and high-tech décor. The showroom was designed by Julia Wong, a Los Angeles-based international interior designer.

The Atrium offers one-on-one service where shoppers can see, smell, and get educated on the wide assortment of cannabis products available. Atrium will also soon be opening an in-store apothecary, where customers will be able to purchase the finest assortment of CBD-infused beauty and wellness products. The dispensary is cash only but there is an ATM onsite. Atrium is open to all adults 21+ and Medical Marijuana card holders 18+.

The Kingdom, Calabasas’s favorite luxury shoe and handbag boutique, invited clients and guests to attend their 2nd Annual Holiday Gift Bar on December 13. The evening was hosted by Kristen Noel Crawley, Draya Michele, Claudine Joseph, and Amie Satchu, with a special trunk show featuring the designs of Judith Leiber, La Fleur Bouquets, Fornasetti, Sydney Evan, and Baja East. A portion of the evening’s proceeds were donated to The Foundation for Living Beauty, which provides free support services to women living with cancer.

As part of the event, Casa Pacifica included a fundraiser for the victims and families of the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting. Through their efforts, and those of the brave first responders that came on the scene, they were able to save their own neighborhood as well as many neighborhoods around them. “The community has been incredibly grateful,” says John. “You won’t believe the amount of thank yous and gifts we have received.”

Now an arson investigator, John experiences a different side of the job, but some things never change. “To be in this line of work, you have to want to help people—your neighbors, the community— it has to come naturally. It is easy to do.”

As the work of the incredible first responders helped save our homes and community from devastation, the residents of Calabasas, Bell Canyon, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and beyond were able to stand up and show their true colors. When the people of these proud communities were faced with adversity, “It brought out the best in people,” says John. “We saw people helping each other. It is the greatest thing in the world. I’ve been on the job for 36 years, and if I had to do it all again, I would do the same exact thing.” n

This is especially true when a firestorm rages throughout the town, destroying neighbors’ homes while sparing yours, or vice versa.

All told, the Woolsey Fire that ignited on November 8, 2018, burned 96,949 acres of land in communities such as Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Chatsworth, Bell Canyon, Malibu, Camarillo, Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks, Agoura, Oak Park, Malibou Lake, Westlake Village, and others. It killed three people, destroyed 1,643 structures, of the 75,000 that were at risk, and prompted the evacuation of more than 295,000 people. Captain Tony Imbrenda of the Los Angeles County Fire Department informed us that, “This fire affected hundreds of square miles and was 14 miles long when it crossed the 101 freeway with wind gusts in the excess of 75 mph.” The precise cause is still under investigation.

“The horrific spread of these megafires is, in part, due to ongoing drought conditions, extensive growth of flammable vegetation, and changing climate patterns,” explains Captain Imbrenda. According to the LACoFD, nothing is more critical than early compliance with evacuation orders and creating 30- to 200-foot perimeters around structures that are

free of flammable vegetation to help continue saving lives and properties down the road.

Many of us were affected by the fire either personally or through friends and family who were displaced or lost their homes.

What remains is the tenacity and generosity of the human spirit.

People both within and beyond our communities continue to offer encouragement, a warm place to stay, and much-needed hugs, food, and clothing during these trying times. Many local businesses opened their doors to feed hungry firefighters and those in need. A myriad of residents dropped off food, clothing, and water; opened donation centers to assist fire victims; and continue to hold fundraisers. During the fires, most of us longed go back to our old, trivial day-to-day problems, like unwashed dishes in the sink or empty juice cartons in the refrigerator.

We welcomed those familiar problems as we lived out of our cars, not knowing if our homes were still standing, or as we felt the overwhelming anxiety caused by the unknown becoming commonplace. It certainly puts things into perspective.

Fortunately, we also acted kinder to each other. People slowed down to talk to strangers rather than rushing on with their days.

We hope some of that thoughtfulness remains as we return to a version of normalcy and as we start to heal together. n

Saturday, November 3 was a special evening for Valerie and Jorge Llauro, the founders of Walking Strong, who hosted their 4th Annual Charity Gala, “A Night of Strength,” to support Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The Llauro’s founded Walking Strong, a 501(c)(3) charity, in 2014 with the determination to make their 12-yearold son, Alexander, and others with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy the first ever survivors of this insidious disease.

The gala took place at the Huffington Center at St. Sophia Cathedral Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Guests in attendance of the inspirational evening were served craft cocktails and a delectable dinner, participated in silent and live auctions, enjoyed lively music, and played Vegas-style games. Proceeds directly benefit scientific research, clinical trials, and families affected by Duchenne.

Duchenne is the most common fatal, genetic childhood disorder, which affects approximately one out of every 5,000 boys each year worldwide. For more information, visit walkingstrong.org.

All proceeds were donated directly to the Institute of Oncology Breast Cancer Research at Hadassah Hospital, reinforcing Hadassah’s commitment to do what it has done for over a century—dedicate itself to medical research without regard to borders, religious affiliation, monetary needs, or artificial political boundaries.

Over 130 women in attendance enjoyed guest speaker Dr. Kristi Funk, a well-known breast cancer surgeon, author, and founder of pinklotus. com. Incredible items were auctioned and a raffle took place to raise money for Hadassah Hospital while guests enjoyed food and drinks donated by Brent’s Deli, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Karma Tequila, and many more. Guests also received a tea cup to paint with all art supplies donated by plaidonline.com.

As a beauty expert specializing in cosmetic der matology, I always seek to offer the next device or innovation that will provide excellent results (and happiness) for my patients. I was first exposed to HIFEM technology—both literally and conceptually—a few months before it became available to patients. I was impressed by the remarkable sensation of having my muscles contract beyond their usual capacity. It is a distinct, intense sensation but not painful. The first go was only five minutes, but recently, as I was doing my research, I had a chance to try a full treatment. My waist felt smaller and my abs tighter, and I was able to recruit muscles more effectively during my usual workouts. Emotionally, they are still healing. “I am so very lucky to have my fiancé by my side and such amazing family and friends to help cope with the loss and the pure unreality of it all,” says Tori. “I feel like life is moving forward and a lot of activities are starting to feel normal again, but I don’t believe any of us…could ever fully heal from what happened. The main thing that I believe has helped me and a lot of others is just be being together. The Borderline family is stronger than ever right now.

I just want to say that everyone handles tragedy differently and … just try to be patient and aware of that. It is obvious that the support is everywhere, and I hope it stays around for a long time...We will become stronger than ever together.”

NABU WINES SUPPORTS BORDERLINE VICTIMS WITH TRIBUTE CONCERT Community members joined together to help heal and assist those in need at NABU Wines, as they hosted a benefit concert for the Borderline shooting victims and survivors at their winery with Twisted Gypsy, a popular local Fleetwood Mac cover band, on Sunday, November 25. Admission was free, but there were a large number of items raffled—including a new car and signed guitars from the GooGoo Dolls and other rock stars, among many other prizes. Also available for purchase were memorial t-shirts for the victims of the tragic shooting. Guests were offered tasty cuisine from food trucks who donated part of their proceeds to the cause, including The Habit, Kona Ice Thousand Oaks, Farm and Flame, and Chronic Tacos. CITY OF CALABASAS WELCOMES NEW MAYOR DAVID J. SHAPIRO The City of Calabasas held its Annual Reorganization Meeting on Wednesday, December 12, with the inauguration of David J. Shapiro as the new mayor of Calabasas and three city council members, who were re-elected on November 6. The mayor is selected by the city council, from one of its members, for a one-year term and serves as the official representative of the city for all legislative and ceremonial purposes. As mayor, David Shapiro will be the presiding officer at city council meetings and will execute all legal instruments and documents. David Shapiro was first elected to the Calabasas City Council in March 2013 and served as the city's mayor from 2014 to 2015. Mayor Pro Tem Alicia Weintraub, Councilmember James R. Bozajian, and Councilmember Mary Sue Maurer were also sworn in during the ceremony. A large part of the meeting was dedicated to thanking outgoing Mayor Fred Gaines, who was praised for his service, especially during the recent Woolsey Fire.

Internationally renowned sports artist Scott Medlock and legendary guitarist of The Doors, Robby Krieger, hosted their 11th-annual, threeday, star-studded event to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and help end childhood cancer.

The weekend kicked off with a 20mile Rock ‘n’ Ride on Saturday, October 27, followed by the highly anticipated all-star concert on Sunday, October 28, at Saddlerock Ranch in Malibu. Gourmet tastings by Mastro’s and other premier restaurants and fine wine and premier cocktails were the fare for the evening’s concertgoers. The Rock & Roll Golf Classic was held the following Monday, October 29, at Moorpark Country Club.

Barbara (CCSVVSB) presented an outstanding 25th Anniversary Holiday Homes Tour and Holiday Boutique as scheduled the weekend of December 1 and 2. The self-guided tour of Conejo Valley homes is the organization’s signature fundraiser, with proceeds funding cancer support programs for local families. Each home represented a cornerstone central to CSCVVSB’s mission: gratitude, hope, support, and education. Featured homes were located in Westlake Village, Westlake Island, and Agoura Hills. Performers—including the Marigali Singers, Mistletones, and the Carillon Choir of Ascension Lutheran Church—provided live music at several tour stops. The Holiday Boutique offered shoppers unique apparel and accessories, handcrafted jewelry, specialty foods, and more great gifts for the holiday season.

This annual event is made

possible by the Rotary Club of Calabasas Charitable Foundation who plans and organizes the event each year. The luncheon would also not be made possible without the continued generosity and support of Sagebrush Cantina and their amazing staff who prepare the wonderful food for those in need. This year, over 125 volunteers joined forces with fellow Rotarians and students who served over 700 appreciative seniors. Due to the Woolsey Fire aftermath, those impacted by the fire were also included. The food was enjoyed by all, along with a festive day of music and dancing!

As in years past, the Calabasas Rotary club relies on the generosity of local citizens and businesses for food, services, and funds in order to provide a filling and festive holiday meal. Sarah Holtzman’s loyal friends formed a walking group, Sarah’s Breasties, in 2015 while she was in the hospital recovering from a double mastectomy. Their objectives were twofold: to honor Sarah and raise funds and awareness for City of Hope’s The Walk for Hope. Brave warrior Sarah has participated every year since, and her team has continued to grow from 55 to 92 strong.

“On June 5, 2015, I was 37 years old and I felt a lump in my left breast,” says Sarah. “I had asked my doctor for a mammogram about six months prior and was told insurance does not cover nor suggest mammograms for women under 40. When I found the lump, I immediately called and demanded to be tested. I was diagnosed with aggressive invasive stage 3 breast cancer five days later.”

At that time, Sarah was living a full life as a wife and mother to three young children. She was at the pinnacle of her career as general manager of North America for a global technology company. She had already lost her mother to brain cancer in 2007, her father to complications from diabetes in 2013, and her sister unexpectedly in 2014. She feared she would be next.

This year, an estimated 266,120 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. It is estimated that 41,400 deaths (40,920 women and 480 men) from breast cancer will occur this year. Breast cancer is the second most common cause of death from cancer in women in the United States, after lung cancer. Fortunately, since 1989, the number of women who have died of breast cancer has steadily decreased thanks to early detection and treatment improvements.

I can’t find the new shingles shot anywhere. Why is there a shortage?

The newer, more-effective shingles vaccine, Shingrix, came on the market in January 2018, and the “shortage” began in May. Many adults over age 60 received

the original shingles shot, Zostavax, after it came on the market in 2006. Some may even remember that it too was in short supply the first couple of years. The manufacturer simply cannot manufacture enough supply to vaccinate all adults over age 50 in the U.S. immediately. Demand for the new vaccine is especially high since it is over 90% effective compared with Zostavax, which was around 50% effective.

If you’re one of the 99% of adults over 50 years old who have had chickenpox, the virus that causes shingles is inside your body and can reactivate at any time. One in every three people in the U.S. will get shingles in their lifetime. No matter how healthy you feel, your immune system declines as you age, and that puts you at an increased risk for shingles.

Further exacerbating the shortage, this new vaccine is a twodose series, with the second shot administered two to six months after the first. Due to the remarkably high demand, you may find that your healthcare provider or local pharmacy is temporarily out of stock. To address the current high demand, the manufacturer expects to significantly increase deliveries and accelerated shipments of doses of vaccine in 2019, however the manufacturer has implemented order limits, is allocating shipments to its customers, and expects this to continue.

4TH ANNUAL SCOTT BAIO CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT On October 15, Scott Baio and wife, Renee Baio, founder of the Bailey Baio Angel Foundation (BBAF), hosted a charity golf tournament and dinner reception featuring live entertainment and an auction to benefit their foundation. BBAF helps children with OA metabolic disorders. GA-1 affected the Baio family days after their daughter Bailey’s birth, when she tested “positive” for GA-1. Scott and Renee lost Bailey’s twin to GA-1, and Bailey spent three months at UCLA Children’s Hospital. Motor4Toys

Charity Car Show & Toy Drive

The 15th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive was a huge success. Presented by Keyes Cars, the event was larger than ever, and the new location of both Motor4Toys and Supercar Sunday—Pierce College—was the perfect fit. The goal of the annual toy drive is to collect as many toys as possible for needy children all over the state of California. Over the last 15 years, Motor4Toys, while operating at 100% charity, has distributed over $5,000,000 in toys. The 15th Annual Car Show hosted some of the rarest and most radical cars on the planet. From low riders to imports and 4x4s, this show is very unique in that the entire car community comes out to support this event with their cars filled with toys.

This year, the show went crazy when five Koenigseggs drove in together. The value of each car is estimated at 3 to 4 million apiece, with a couple “one-off” cars estimated to be worth almost 10 million. With all five of these cars with all the other collector cars, this event truly embodied the passion that the car community is known for. And of course, Batman was present. Comedian and all-around car guy Jeff Dunham was very kind to have three of his Batmobiles on display and an incredible 1934 Lincoln. They were a huge hit!

Of course there were toys, toys, and more toys for the children. Motor4Toys has become one of the largest toy collecting organizations in the state of California with the help of so many kind people. For years, we have done a Porsche Marque Day, but with Keyes stepping in, it was the best, most exciting Porsche Marque Day in the history of Supercar Sunday. Over 400 Porsches attended the inaugural event at Pierce College. In classic Keyes style, there was an abundance of complimentary food, coffee, games and giveaways. Keyes, which recently acquired Porsche Woodland Hills, made a bold statement about its dedication to the Porsche brand and the car community. The event blew everyone away, and the passion and generosity that Keyes displayed was second to none.

13TH ANNUAL TEE IT UP FOR THE TROOPS The 13th Annual Tee It Up for the Troops Celebrity Invitational was held on Monday, October 29, at Woodland Hills Country Club. It was yet another successful year raising money and awareness for Folds of Honor. Since 2007, Folds of Honor has carried forth the singular, noble mission to provide educational scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members. Golfers enjoyed breakfast before a shotgun start kicked off the tournament, where exciting challenges and contests awaited them throughout the course.
