A Note from the Publisher

Greetings Calabasas,

My husband, Nic, and I are thrilled to now have Calabasas Style Magazine as a part of the 13 Stars Media family of publications. As the new publisher, I am honored to join the team of professionals who have been part of this publication since its inception. The warm welcome my husband and I have received from the community is heartwarming, and we are committed to continuing the high standards set by Gayle Barnes and her team.

Speaking of our team, our Editorial Assistant, Kaylie, has welcomed her beautiful bundle of joy Cambria, we are beyond excited for her and their new addition to the family. Congratulations Kaylie!

Recently I had the privilege of attending the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce installation gala where Kathleen Sterling was presented with the Spirit of Calabasas Award, and I must say, she is truly inspiring. It's heartening to witness the tremendous positive influence that individuals like Kathleen and others can have on our community.

As the weather warms up and spring approaches, we can look forward to the green hills, blossoming trees, and plenty of sunshine that will inspire us to get outdoors. In this issue, we celebrate remarkable men of distinction who have made significant contributions to our community. We also have our Local Flavor section, where we showcase some of the best places to dine around town. And we have an excellent lineup of activities to keep both you and your kiddos entertained.

On the cover of this issue, we are thrilled to feature the Weitzbuch family—interior designer Amanda and her husband, dermatologist Hal, who recently returned to Calabasas where they both grew up and now get to raise their three beautiful girls in their hometown.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Calabasas Style Magazine . We look forward to bringing you more inspiring content in the months to come n

CELEBRATING THE SPRING EQUINOX

As the winter months slowly come to a close, we all eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring. The spring equinox, also known as the vernal equinox, marks the beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere. This year, the spring equinox falls on March 20, and we are gearing up to welcome the season with open arms.

The spring equinox marks the moment when the sun crosses the equator, making night and day almost equal in length. It is a time of renewal, rejuvenation, and growth, as nature awakens from its winter slumber. In California, the spring equinox

means blooming wildflowers, longer and warmer days, and a multitude of outdoor activities to enjoy. Many of California's parks and gardens will be showcasing their vibrant flora and fauna, including the famous California poppies, which paint the hillsides in hues of orange and gold.

Hiking is a popular activity during the spring equinox in Southern California, and there are many trails and parks to explore. From the coastal bluffs of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve to the Edward Albert Trail that leads to the multi-tiered 150-foot Escondido Falls—the highest in the Santa Monica

Mountains, we have access to some of the most beautiful hiking destinations in the world.

Additionally, spring marks the start of the outdoor festival season, with numerous events scheduled in our community and throughout the state.

As we welcome the arrival of spring, let us also take a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature and the changing of the seasons. We hope you are inspired to get outside and enjoy the beautiful California sunshine, take a hike, visit the beach, or simply enjoy a picnic in one of the city's parks. n

Returning to Their Roots in Calabasas

THE WEITZBUCH FAMILY

————

Interior designer Amanda Weitzbuch and her husband, dermatologist Hal Weitzbuch, recently returned to Calabasas where they both grew up. They relish the fact that three generations, including their parents, siblings, and children, continue to work and reside in this family-friendly community.

“Our story is rather comical,” notes Amanda. “Hal and I both grew up side-by-side, attending the same schools in the same city. Our families even knew each other. Yet, we never actually met until 2008, 10 years after he graduated Calabasas High School.” It took a chance meeting at a Labor Day pool party at the Westwood W Hotel to plant the seeds that would eventually grow into marriage, family, and a whole new generation of Calabasas residents.

Hal spent 12 years in Chicago pursuing an undergraduate engineering degree at Northwestern, followed by Chicago Medical School and a three-year dermatology residency at Cook County Hospital. When he could choose any hospital in the country for his first-year internship, he came home to Los Angeles. It was clearly a great choice since he met the love of his life, Amanda, that same year. When Hal had to return to the windy city to fulfill his residency, he and Amanda weren’t sure they would stay together. Fortunately, one of Amanda’s sisters started grad school in Chicago, so she ended up spending a lot of time there; and the rest is kismet! The couple eventually got engaged at the top of Mammoth Mountain in January 2012 and married at Amanda’s parents’ lovely Calabasas estate the following Labor Day weekend, exactly four years from the day they first met.

Amanda currently runs an interior design studio; Amanda Ché Interiors, LLC, amandacheinteriors.com, creating beautiful environments for people’s homes throughout Calabasas and beyond. She previously attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles for business and design. Amanda’s passion for design was initially ignited while working in her family’s lingerie and swimwear business. She subsequently founded a swimwear company called A.Ché Swimwear, jet-setting to exotic locales like China and Thailand and other hip spots like France, Miami, and Las Vegas.

Amanda’s focus shifted when she became a mom. “Even though I loved traveling and designing, once I had children, I didn’t want to travel the world or work around the clock anymore. I desired more time with my kids while they were little and feel very lucky to have had the choice to stay home.” Amanda channeled her creativity into a luxury birthday and wedding invitations company

called Teaspoon & Twine. Unfortunately, when most celebrations ground to a halt during the pandemic, the demand for invitations naturally dwindled. Her entrepreneurial spirit remained, and a short time later, Amanda Ché Interiors was born out of her drive to create stunning, comfortable spaces throughout Calabasas and Southern California.

Hal continues to follow his calling, serving his Calabasas community at Brilliance Dermatology, formerly known as Calabasas Dermatology Center. “In 2012, we took over Dr. DeStefano’s dermatology practice located adjacent from the Calabasas Swim & Tennis Center,” he explains, “offering the same unsurpassable experience and amazing staff that patients of all ages—from pediatric to geriatric—have come to expect.” Hal and his exceptional team offer everything from MOHS surgery for skin cancer removal, acne treatments, and skin rejuvenation to cuttingedge laser treatments, facials, injectables, and liposuction. The practice also opened and remodeled a second location in Thousand Oaks with convenient onsite parking, a Quest lab, and a pharmacy.

This multi-talented family of five includes 8-year-old Zoëlle, who currently attends third grade at Viewpoint School in Calabasas; 6-year-old kindergartener Lullah, also at Viewpoint; and 4-year-old Apolline, who enjoys preschool at Montessori of Calabasas. Zoëlle, already an aspiring actress, loves soccer, playing piano, singing, and reading and writing plays. She’s making her fourth stage appearance this spring. Lullah, a talented artist and math whiz, loves to draw and create, play piano, and sing. She also enjoys soccer and Bollywood and hip hop dancing. The youngest, Apolline, loves soccer, gymnastics, ballet, and tap. “This budding ball of energy is an amazing gymnast who always keeps us on our toes,” say her proud parents. “All our girls are kind, talented, and extremely loving.”

Amanda and Hal continue to support their kids’ activities in their beloved hometown. Hal coaches his daughters’ soccer teams, while Amanda volunteers at their Viewpoint School. Amanda also practices Pilates and yoga. Her childhood experience riding horses at Far West Farms in Calabasas evolved into dressage riding, a form of training and competition where horse and rider move gracefully together. Hal loves to snowboard

down icy slopes, surf the waves in Malibu, bike with friends, and play basketball and soccer. As a family, they adore the performing arts, museums, heading to sandy beaches in Maui and SoCal, and traveling to snowy locales.

Last year, during a ski trip in Park City, Utah, they added a new member to their family…an adorable golden retriever pup named Sundance (Sunny). “We like to say he chose us,” notes Amanda, “since we weren’t planning to get a dog until he decided to come home with us. Sunny’s clearly completed our family, and we love him dearly.”

The Weitzbuchs moved into a new house at Hidden Park Estates in Agoura in 2014 while expecting their first daughter, Zoëlle. In October 2021, they returned to their roots, moving into their current Calabasas home, which Amanda remodeled. This fun-loving family frequents such favorite dining spots as Nobu and Taverna Tony’s in Malibu and Porta Via in Calabasas. They especially enjoy living in Mountain View Estates with its proximity to nature, city life, glorious beaches, hiking and equestrian trails, and great schools. The Weitzbuchs look forward to providing their kids with the same incredible childhood they experienced growing up in their closeknit community of Calabasas. n

ZUMA CARS & COFFEE BRAKING FOR A SAFE PCH

and photographed

Malibu retailer Aviator Nation Dreamland teamed up with Zuma Cars & Coffee to organize an early morning event for automotive enthusiasts on January 22. The event was wellreceived by many attendees and experienced higher than expected sales of lattes and other menu items. However, the city council later cited them for not obtaining a Temporary Use Permit (TUP) for the event, which was an unfortunate oversight.

Going forward, the city council has made it mandatory for all cars and coffee events in Malibu to obtain a TUP to ensure that these events are conducted safely and with respect for traffic regulations. This measure will help regulate and manage future events, ensuring a positive and safe experience for everyone involved. For more information, visit IG: @zumacarsncoffee.

Lamborghini Urus Performante

When Lamborghini entered the SUV market, many purists were upset. They thought that the brand known for being hyperexotic was lessening the exclusivity it is known for and entering into a more “normal” segment that Lamborghini has simply never been in. The brand known for being over the top, with hard edges, pushing to the extreme in every possible way... what were they thinking?

The Lamborghini Urus was an over-the-top success. In 2021, Automobili Lamborghini recorded its best sales results ever, with 8,405 cars delivered worldwide with the Urus leading the deliveries. We purists were wrong, and once again, Lamborghini forged forward and elevated a segment to a new stratosphere. Enter the Urus Performante. The Urus Performante is the most exclusive model in the Urus line-up. With a whopping 667 horsepower, a 0-62 MPH in 3.3 seconds, and a top speed of 190 mph, this is definitely a supercar...er, a super SUV. Well done, Lamborghini. You nailed it.

From Lamborghini:

“The Urus Performante takes the supreme performance and distinctive looks of Lamborghini’s ground-breaking super SUV to the next level, retaining its luxurious versatility and delivering the most engaging driving experience: not only on road but in every environment, distinguished through an alluring design that denotes new benchmarks for driving dynamism in what is already a remarkable car,” says Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “The Urus set a new standard at its launch, taking Lamborghini’s design DNA and technological talent and delivering the world’s first super SUV for a new era. The Urus Performante sets the bar even higher for the SUV segment.” For more information, visit lamborghini.com. n

The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow is committed to raising awareness and much-needed funds to benefit the many heroes of childhood cancer. The inspiration for this organization, Kevin Arthur Cordasco, was a remarkable Calabasas 16-year-old who bravely fought a nearly seven-year battle with neuroblastoma. While March 11th, 2023, marks the sad 10th anniversary of his death, it also marks the 10th anniversary of the foundation named in his honor.

Kevin's journey became much more difficult very early on when he and his family found out that he was nonresponsive to traditional treatments. Kevin became an experimental candidate for a study called Metaiodobenzylguanidine Treatment (MIBG). This compound treatment for high-risk neuroblastoma patients was only available in a few places in the country, one being San Francisco Children's Hospital, where he underwent treatment. Although this treatment did not save his life, Kevin and the other children in the study

pioneered and made it possible for this treatment to save lives of kids 10 years later.

In February 2013, while receiving the "Citizen of the Year" award from the city of Calabasas, young Kevin said, "I hope that one day I can give back what's been given to me and to other kids and families battling cancer.” This February, his most fervent wish came to fruition when the Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow awarded a grant in the amount of $100,000 to Children's Hospital Los Angeles to be designated for a new MIBG patient and treatment room.

The funds will be used for the purchase of medical equipment and other specific equipment needed to maintain this special new room. Now kids and families will not have to travel to San Francisco or half way across the country to receive this cutting edge, life-saving treatment. This February, Children’s Hospital celebrated, revealing that the name of this room will be The Kevin Cordasco Foundation Patient and Treatment Room! The name and dedication could not be more perfect. n

Babies!

We’ve Come a Long Way,

Being the official beauty contributor at Calabasas Style Magazine for the past decade has given me the opportunity to share a lot of news, information, and trends as they relate to the beauty world. As I began to write my 60th article for the magazine, I was struck by how far we’ve come in the field of cosmetic dermatology and how quickly new products are expected to continue to change and improve our lives in the years to come.

One of the most shocking things I discovered occurred during the recent pandemic. During a time when people were forced to spend more time at home than ever before, I initially believed that my business, along with all other cosmetic practices, would suffer. Like many of my colleagues around the country, I thought that offering in-person services would see a dramatic decrease in patients, possibly forcing me to permanently close my doors. But that didn’t happen. On the contrary, cosmetic dermatology practices across the nation not only survived, but they thrived.

So, what happened? Some believe that the combination of increased stress levels, regular video and Zoom calls for work-from-home professionals, more free time, and a new YOLO (you only live once) attitude allowed more people to opt for cosmetic services as an outlet for stress relief and self-care. While I think that’s true, I think it may go deeper, so I’d like to share my thoughts about how my patients regard their visits to Bella Skin Institute.

First and foremost, I believe that people love to feel confident about their skin and bodies. While they may choose to forgo other types of purchases, the need and desire to feel good about themselves is non-negotiable. The boost in confidence and self-esteem from self-care dramatically impacts their ability to function at their highest level. Many of my patients attribute their positive outlook on the world and their success both personally and professionally to how they regard themselves. Basically, the old adage—“when you look good, you feel good"—is true, and it encourages people to be more inclined to go after all the many treasures that life has to offer.

Secondly, the pandemic forced everyone to engage in more screen time and that hasn’t decreased much even though many people have returned to their offices. Our society has permanently changed, I believe, and many will never return to a traditional work situation. FaceTime with friends and family, social media posting, and taking and sharing selfies and photos with friends is at an all-

time high. With this increased focus on appearances, Americans of all ages are seeking out ways to improve their looks.

Thirdly, the products and techniques used for minimally invasive procedures have advanced significantly in the past decade. Advancements in technology include rejuvenation techniques such as radiofrequency microneedling, platelet-rich plasma treatments, biostimulatory injectables, adipose allograft matrix-based fillers, new neuromodulators (wrinkle relaxers), and more. Many of these injectable treatments have become mainstream, and the stigma has been removed. Many people who could “hide” behind their masks and work from home opted to try injectables and cosmetic procedures for the first time. Most of these procedures provide satisfying results and can be performed quickly—with patients getting in and out within 15 minutes.

Fourth, the “Covid 19” 19-pound weight gain was no joke, and people are seeking new and innovative ways to boost their workout regime and accelerate results. EMSculpt high-intensity electromagnetic muscle toning is a game changer to create flatter abs and a toned, perky booty. Tried-and-true Coolsculpting is great for reducing stubborn areas of fat, and Kybella deoxycholicacid injectable is perfect for small pockets of unwanted fat, such as the underarm “bra fat.” Body firming with radiofrequency or high-intensity-focused ultrasound are extremely popular for those complaining of loose skin when they finally do lose weight. These are all ways to promote body positivity, and though they do not substitute for healthy eating and exercise, they do inspire these habits through visible progress in the right direction.

We are coming out of some difficult times, and we’ve come a long way, Babies. This truly will be the second roaring twenties. We will not only survive but thrive in this era. Dream Wedding

If you're planning a wedding in Southern California, specifically in the areas of Calabasas, Westlake, Malibu, or along the coast, you're in for a treat. This region is filled with breathtaking wedding venues that will make your special day even more unforgettable. However, with so many options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. That's why we're here to help! In this personal guide, we'll share tips and tricks to help you plan your dream wedding in Southern California.

Find Your Perfect Date and Budget

The first step in wedding planning is choosing the date. This will impact your venue options, vendor availability, and budget. Take your time to think about the best date for you and

your partner, and consider the schedules of your loved ones. It's important to choose a date that everyone can attend, so they can share this special moment with you.

When it comes to budget, it's important to set a number that works for you and your partner. In California, the average wedding costs around $50,000, but it's possible to have a beautiful wedding for less or more, depending on your preferences and priorities. The most important thing is to prioritize the aspects of your wedding that matter the most to you, and allocate a higher portion of your budget to those items.

Choose Your Dream Venue

The next step is to choose a venue that fits your style and needs. Our area has a wide range of wedding venues, from parks to vineyards, gardens, and historic buildings. It's best to book your venue early, as popular locations tend to fill up quickly.

When selecting your venue, think about the ambiance and the loca tion. If you're having an outdoor wedding, make sure to have a backup plan in case of inclement weath er. Also, consider the logistics of the venue, such as parking and accessibility, so you and your guests can enjoy your day without stress.

Hire Your Dream Team

With so many talented wedding vendors, it's important to choose the right team to bring your vision to life. From florists to photographers, caterers to musicians, and everything in between, you'll want to find professionals who understand your style and can make your special day even more magical.

82 Calabasas style
{ PLANNING YOUR }

Take your time to research potential vendors and schedule appointments to meet with each one. During your appointments, share your needs and preferences and ask for samples of their work. It's important to choose vendors who you feel comfortable with and who are easy to communicate with, as they'll be a part of your wedding journey.

Plan Your Personal Ceremony

The ceremony is the heart of your wedding day, and it's important to choose a format and style that reflect your beliefs and values. Whether you prefer a traditional religious ceremony, a secular ceremony, or something in between, there are many options to choose from.

When planning your ceremony, think about the location, the length, and the music you'd like to include. You'll also want to choose an officiant who can help you craft a ceremony that is meaningful, personal, and memorable.

Design Your Memorable Reception

Your reception is where you'll celebrate with your loved ones and make memories that will last a lifetime. When planning your reception, consider the type of food and drinks you'd like to serve, as well as the layout and design of the space. Think about the atmosphere you'd like to create and choose décor and lighting that will make your reception even more special.

Whether you choose to have your reception locally in Calabasas, Westlake, or Malibu or choose a destination in another town along the coast, there are endless possibilities for creating a beautiful and unforgettable event. n

Westlake Body Contouring

With summer right around the corner, we want to look and feel our best—especially in our bikinis—so we search for ways to lose stubborn inches around our belly and thighs or shed excess winter weight. Now, Westlake Body Contouring in Agoura Hills offers a simple, pain-free solution to quickly improve health, wellness, and beauty with no downtime.

Using a state-of-the-art Contour Light Red Light Therapy (RLT) with a patented reflective coating—the most powerful technology available—Denise Everson provides patients with noninvasive fat reduction, chronic pain relief, and other amazing benefits. In just 25 minutes, patients can lose inches and tighten skin without pain, scarring, or cell damage, unlike more-invasive procedures like liposuction or CoolSculpting. One of the safest ways to sculpt the body, RLT isn’t a form of radiation or UV light. The only side effects are inches lost and healthier-looking skin.

To gain a better understanding, owner Denise Everson answered some pertinent questions about the Contour Light process.

What can be expected during the first treatment?

On the first treatment, we consult with patients to address their goals and concerns. We also do a body analysis scan that provides us with percentages and measurements. To begin, you are covered with and comfortably lie upon warm LED pads for 25 minutes. It feels so relaxing that some patients even doze off.

86 Calabasas style
A natural way to lose fat, heal pain, and more
Denise Everson, owner Westlake Body Contouring

After the RLT treatment, you stand on a vibrating platform for 10 minutes to help drain the fat through your lymphatic system. Afterwards, you can go about your day’s normal activities.

How soon can results be noticed?

Patients will notice the slimming effects immediately after the very first session. Generally, patients lose 2 to 5 inches from their waists, arms, hips, and thighs in just a single treatment. Plus, your skin appears more toned and radiant due to naturally increased collagen and elastin production. For fat loss, 12 treatments are recommended for optimal results though results vary by patient. Red light therapy is cumulative, so the most significant results are seen during the last 25 percent of treatments.

How does it work?

When stimulated by specific wavelengths of light energy, fat cells deflate much like a balloon, releasing nearly all their fat content. It drains through the lymphatic system as free fatty acids and is eliminated from the body. For optimal results, it is important to drink two glasses of water every hour throughout the entire day of treatment and at least eight glasses on non-treatment days. Hydration allows the body to flush toxins while it begins to burn fat.

Can the Contour Light therapy treat pain?

Often, those suffering from chronic pain seek alternative medicine when conventional medication is ineffective. Since the LED light increases blood flow and energy to the affected areas, it also reduces inflammation and pain to help ease a range of conditions from arthritis, neck and back pain, neuropathy, and joint pain to migraines and autoimmune diseases. Numerous studies have also shown the red light can accelerate healing of numerous types of injuries.

While it is most important to lead a healthy lifestyle, body contouring offers extra help to achieve goals faster and easier. Westlake Body Contouring simply helps patients look and feel their best naturally. n

Cars and Coffee at Lavaggio

Cars and Coffee at Lavaggio was hosted by Dustin Troyan and sponsored by Lavaggio, and it was an incredible success. The event was held on a beautiful Saturday morning, and the Lavaggio parking lot was filled with some truly amazing cars and awesome people. The variety of cars on display was on par with any car show or concours for that matter. From members of the Classic Chevy Club of Southern California and the Television Motion Picture Car Club in attendance to car community members in some of the rarest and most exotic of cars, the Lavaggio parking lot was awe inspiring.

If you are a Porsche fan, we had some of Porsche’s finest in attendance, including a 959, 918, GT3RS, and the brand-new GT4RS. There were literally millions of dollars in just a handful of Porsches—not that anyone was paying attention to that. There were a wide variety of classic Chevys, Ferraris, Hot Rods, classic and modern BMWs, Ford Mustangs, and many other makes and models. Car enthusiasts came from all over Southern California to attend the inaugural Cars and Coffee of 2023, and everybody who attended was so happy for the event season to be back in full swing. If you are a car enthusiast, you know how wonderful these events are and how they’re the perfect excuse to see your friends and exercise your vehicle. It was a great season opener!

Calabasas Mayor David J. Shapiro Continues to Lead

On December 14, 2022, David J. Shapiro took over the role of mayor of Calabasas for the third time, presiding over city council meetings, signing off on legal documents, and generally, helping keep the city on course towards an even brighter future.

First elected to the Calabasas City Council on March 5, 2013, David served as the city's mayor from 2014 to 2015. Re-elected to the council in 2018, he was installed for a second term through 2019. David took the oath of office a third time this past December at City Hall.

“I always strive to make a positive difference for all our residents and maintain our quality of life,” notes the mayor. “For almost 30 years, I've proudly lived, worked, and raised my family in Calabasas. I take great pride in having served the residents of our wonderful community on numerous city commissions and committees.”

David’s accomplishments can be witnessed in almost every aspect of the Calabasas community. He led the planning, design, and construction of the City Hall Civic Center, library, and Calabasas Senior Center. David also initiated the Veteran's Garden to support our residents that have served in the military and those that continue to serve our country. One of his most important accomplishments as mayor was signing the Gun Safety Ordinance, one of the first gun-safety measures in the state and country.

For our younger residents, David initiated the formation of Calabasas’s 1st Mayor’s Youth Council, led an anti-

bullying campaign, and brought forward an anti-bullying ordinance that designated October as AntiBullying Awareness Month. Passionate to preserve our environment, David also initiated environmental reform as mayor, including the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, a secondhand smoke ordinance, and the ban of single-use plastic straws, cutlery, and cups. He worked tirelessly to get funding and support to build the Lost Hills overpass and led our city’s efforts to recover $4 million in damages from the Woolsey Fire.

David’s goals for the upcoming term remain consistent: to keep our city safe and prepared for natural disasters and keep the city financially strong. He has also pledged to support our schools and students, advocate for our seniors, and continue to provide environmental leadership.

Mayor Shapiro received his bachelor of arts degree in history from UCLA and a doctor of law degree from the University of San Diego. He’s served clients throughout Southern California from his Calabasas law office for more than 35 years. David, along with his wife, Barbara; sons, Adam and Alex; and daughter, Samantha, also supports such philanthropic organizations as the Rotary Club of Calabasas, Habitat for Humanity, Cordasco Something Yellow Foundation, Loving Home Hospice for Children, and Golden West ALS. n

What Doug does is just as unique as the way he does it. Using experience from 30 years of investment property ownership/ syndication, Doug and his wife, Denise, created the most horizontally integrated real estate company in California by inventing innovative “Home/Fractional Estate Management” programs and bringing the accounting, tenant relations/ work-order control tools of commercial real estate to residential property, home, and estate management.

The “V-8” moment that created “home management” occurred when Doug and Denise realized everything they were doing to help care for their aging parents’ homes was already on their list of services—hiring vendors, comparing complex bids, scheduling repairs, and supervising gardening/ pool/pest services. Home management makes it possible for busy executives, bi-coastal couples, and seniors to “enjoy the benefits of home ownership without any of the hassles.”

At 17, Doug left his native Los Angeles. Nineteen years later, he returned a changed person and began investing in real estate. What changed? Fourteen years in the U.S. Air Force tells only part of the story. In those years, Doug gained the worldview that he credits for his personal and professional

success. He lived in 10 states, four countries, earned USAF F-111 “Top Gun” honors, experienced life behind the Berlin Wall, attended graduate school at UC Davis, and was a professor of economics at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he co-founded the Colorado Ski School for the Blind.

While Doug owes his work ethic and attention to detail to his military service, he owes his real estate expertise to 10 years as COO and executive vice president of CNA Enterprises, with its $800 million commercial real estate portfolio. At CNA, Doug honed his asset-management, finance, and leasing skills. Doug is a stickler for 24/7 online transparency, continuous risk assessment, preventative maintenance, exhaustive vender screening, and “above and beyond” customer service. While it might seem unexpected that a former “Top Gun” would find happiness in real estate, it makes perfect sense. Lexington enables him to serve his community. He likes that no two days are alike, and most importantly, it keeps him close to his wife and children—right here in Calabasas.

nic mattson 13 stars

California native, Co-Founder and CEO of 13 Stars Nic Mattson began his venture into media publishing in 2017 when he and his wife, Hayley, purchased a small community magazine called Paso Robles Magazine . But it was a 2002 decision between working in political consulting or continuing his education that was the determining factor in the direction of his career. He dropped out of college to blaze a trail with boots on the ground through the political, business, and journalism fields.

As the son of a computer programming pioneer, Nic was introduced to computer programming and cutting-edge technology before he was 10 years old. He surfed the internet and created Windows-based applications before most people ever logged into America Online. Fluent in tech languages and web design, Nic found his passion in working directly with people and communities instead of behind the monitors and URLs.

When Nic moved back to his hometown of Atascadero, California, in 2006, he started using technology, politics, business, and journalism to improve his community. He spent 15 years on the boards of local nonprofits and five years as an editor at the local newspaper before entering the industry as the publisher of the Paso Robles Magazine .

As the CEO of 13 Stars, Nic continues an unconventional path, traversing the emergent tech environment to revolutionize the company with innovation and passion as the media and journalism landscape continues a chaotic reshaping that has been manifesting for more than a decade since the internet and smartphones disrupted business as usual. Over the past two years, he led the acquisition of six additional independent publications under the 13 Stars banner to grow the 13 Stars footprint beyond San Luis Obispo County into the Santa Ynez, Malibu, Calabasas, and West Los Angeles County regions.

Marty Levy is one of the most successful insurance advisors in the country and founded one of Southern California’s top insurance and employee benefit agencies, Corporate Strategies, Inc. (CorpStrat). The agency has served clients for over 30 years and ranks amongst the largest in Los Angeles. It provides employers with tools to attract, reward, and retain employees through both insurance and HR technology.

“I take great pride in our success,” says Marty, “which is founded on building great relationships. That only comes from years of trust and following our basic business fundamentals—to protect our clients’ assets and help them achieve their goals.”

Marty’s main focus is working with people on the issues that keep them up at night staring at the ceiling. “This is what I call life's what-ifs,” he explains, “the things that worry us, that keep us awake at night.” Marty’s top priority is properly protecting his clients from these “what-ifs” through planning and insurance protections. Marty is also consumed with creating plans for healthcare, sometimes using insurance planning called long-term care. “It’s

unfortunate that many professionals and business owners spend so much time and energy creating assets while spending little, if any, protecting those assets,” Marty tells us. “Over 70 percent of all people will need healthcare later in life, yet most are ill-prepared to fund for it and do not have a plan.”

Marty is also a skilled life insurance analyst, having created a process used by actuaries, estate planners, and accountants called "The Life Insurance Audit," which helps people assess and evaluate all types of life insurance policies. “Life insurance is perhaps the most misunderstood, mis-sold and mis-represented product ever,” says Marty. “A life insurance policy without guidance is like flying a plane without a pilot.”

Marty lives in Calabasas with his wife, Kellee, and two children, Jill and Mitchell. He is a Life and Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table, an elite group of professionals representing the top 1 percent of advisors in the USA. “I run a very successful business,” says Marty, “but it always comes down one simple thing: helping people achieve their goals.”. 818.468.0862 SafeSmartMoney.com Marty@CorpStrat.com

Francisco Alberto Mondet was born with an unsettling need to make everything look and feel remarkable—it’s that simple. In all the things that he looks at, Francisco sees something infinitely better just waiting to become what it wants to be.

His birth in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a family of luxury goods merchants dating back to Bazaar Mondet in Paris, France, hints at where Francisco’s obsession for beauty and appeal began. Francisco is the director of sales and product development for Conejo Hardwoods in Westlake Village, a meticulous purveyor and supplier of superior materials for custom home builders, architects, designers, and demanding homeowners.

“What drew me into partnering with Conejo Hardwoods’ President Roth Johnson seven years ago was his vison and commitment to seeking out and earnestly servicing the most discerning communities and individuals from Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Malibu, Westlake Village, Montecito, and Santa Barbara,” says Francisco. The integrity which underlines every decision Conejo Hardwoods makes as an organization is precisely why Francisco feels their success has been so prevalent for over 40 years, and it’s these values and standards which keep the company relevant to these localyet-world-class communities.

The very process of immigrating to the United States at the early age of 6 and knowing zero English inspired a rigorous sense of industriousness and determination which only proved to be a catalyst for his relentless pursuit to manifest anything he felt could be better or possibly just more aesthetically sound. After spending nearly five years engaged in college courses, strictly for his own enrichment, Francisco birthed a luxury handbag business which he fittingly called Mondet. Importing the finest quality Italian leather hides, teaching himself how to hand-stitch these heirloom works of art, and ultimately, having them featured in some of the world’s most prestigious boutiques was a milestone for Francisco.

Francisco met his bride, Jessica Marie, 10 years ago and says, “Sometimes in life you come across a creation which is perfect as it is. Jessica was exactly this and continues to be for me.”

Francisco and Jessica collaborate on nearly all creative opportunities—from her talented creative direction for the Mondet handbags to the many projects they embark on, including some up-and-coming socio-cultural-literary endeavors. Francisco and Jessica have lived in Southern California for the last decade with their three children, Paloma, Luna, and Massimo. conejohardwoods.com

Since 1990, Adam Kaufman has been completing searches for the most successful companies in Southern California. A graduate of California State University, Northridge, Adam received a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He began his career with KPMG, where he earned his C.P.A. license, before opening his own recruiting practice. In 1997, Adam merged his practice with Greg Hunt, a tax specialist, and Kaufman Hunt was born.

Adam’s specialty practice in Kaufman Hunt focuses on helping outstanding companies find the most qualified and gifted accounting, finance, and human resource professionals in Southern California. During the pandemic, his firm pivoted on several fronts. Zoom interviews became commonplace and helped expedite the selection process. He also added researchers, recruiting associates, and new technology as a result of the dramatic initial impact of the pandemic. It gave them the opportunity to reset, recharge, and then accelerate into the “new hybrid normal.” As a result, the firm has flourished!

Adam credits his extensive database, his far-reaching networking capabilities, and keen eye for exceptional talent

as significant aspects of his success. “It’s all about making connections and delivering results.”

Adam lives in Calabasas with his wife of 30 years, Michelle, and has two grown children, Sam and Isabella. Years ago, Michelle was diagnosed with both multiple sclerosis and diabetes. While they are thankful the MS hasn’t progressed, it does inspire their gratitude and support of both the MS Society and various diabetes organizations in an effort to find a cure for these diseases. An avid athlete, Adam can be found often at Orange Theory or at The Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center where he regularly plays tennis. His other interests include dining out, travel, and real estate investing.

“As I approach my 60th birthday this year, especially in light of my dad passing away at the age of 37 from cancer, I am so grateful for my family, friends, community, health, and the opportunity to transform and enrich the lives of those I touch,” says Adam. “As my good friends know, my philosophy on life is work hard, play hard, make every day count, and laugh as much as possible along the way.” 21600 Oxnard St., #1120, Woodland Hills 818.888.0007 kaufmanhunt.com

Vinnie sassoon primary homes, inc.

As a contractor and developer that has built multimilliondollar homes all across luxury neighborhoods in Southern California for over 23 years, Vinnie Sassoon is still passionate about building his clients’ dream homes.

Born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel, Vinnie became inspired by watching Hollywood movies from the 1980s and decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of building “dream homes” that were portrayed on the silver screen. Leaving all that was familiar, Vinnie set forth on a journey with a huge uphill climb, where he literally built his business from the ground up. He learned the basics of his trade by working fulltime as a construction worker while attending school to earn his contractor’s license. He slowly worked his way up until he had the experience and resources to start his own company, Primary Homes, Inc., which started in 2000.

Vinnie has built his livelihood by building people’s homes. His wide range of clientele includes high-profile personalities— actors, musicians, studio executives, and more. Today, all of his personal development projects are accompanied by renowned architects and interior designers. “My role is to build the most suitable homes for my customers,” says Vinnie. “And

I believe that the special relationship forged between myself and my clients during the project leads to perfect results.”

While Vinnie specializes in luxury homes, his company also works with clients who need more modest construction projects. “Not everyone can afford to build a custom luxury estate,” says Vinnie, “but that doesn’t mean that their dreams are any less important. Once I know what people are trying to achieve, we happily take on clients who are looking to do a partial or full remodel of their existing home.” Vinnie and his team also offer renovations, additions, ADUs, and other types of construction projects. No matter what the project, Vinnie’s desired outcome is always the same— to see that the job is completed on time and on budget with the customer completely satisfied.

Despite his outstanding work ethic, Vinnie is first and foremost a family man. He and his wife, son, and daughter love living in the tight-knit, “kibbutz feeling” community of Calabasas, where they can enjoy the great amenities, including surfing in nearby Malibu! 13351 D Riverside Dr., #473 Sherman Oaks 877.700.5656 Primaryhomes.net vinnie@primaryhomes.net Lic.# B805314

he roots of Dr. Armen Galustian’s and Dr. Razmik Galustian’s passion for dentistry go back an entire generation. “Our dad was a dentist,” say the brothers, “so we visited his office at a very young age, realizing early on that we wanted to dedicate our professional lives to this field.”

In 2018, Dr. Armen Galustian took over Calabasas Dental Institute, working side-by-side with his brother, Razmik, to provide a full range of services—from family and cosmetic dentistry to root-canal therapy, periodontal treatments, and patient education on how to take oral health to the next level.

Patients are like family to the Galustian brothers and benefit from modern dentistry in a calm and relaxed environment. Patients often remark how thoroughly the dentists explain each procedure and put them at ease. Patients also appreciate the state-of-the-art technology and the team’s decades of experience.

Dr. Armen Galustian began practicing in 2002. A graduate of USC Dental School, he possesses extensive training on the use of digital imaging and photography and offers comprehensive cosmetic, restorative, and preventive care, including top-quality porcelain veneers, dental implants, Invisalign ®, and dental bondings. Ask the Pharmacist

You are correct. Everyday our country faces the worst outcome of the growing opioid crisis, lives lost due to overdoses. Overdose-related deaths do not discriminate. Anyone can fall victim to it. It could be forgetfulness and taking too many prescription pain pills, or it could be street drugs laced with fentanyl. In November of 2022, the Los Angeles Department of Public Health published a report that detailed deaths due to overdose, and the conclusion were startling. We learned that 92% of individuals ages 12 through 17 years old died due to an overdose of fentanyl, and while that number is high so are the others – 80% ages 18 to 25 years old and 52% of people 26 years old and older. We must continue to educate our youth and all of our loved ones about the potential for abuse and death due to inappropriate opioid use.

If you have Narcan (naloxone) on hand, you could potentially save a life from an opioid-related overdose. This includes prescription opioids, fentanyl, and heroin exposure. Narcan (naloxone) works by reviving a person within 2 to 3 minutes from slow and shallow breathing, or even the loss of breathing. No prescription is needed from qualified pharmacists. Using Narcan is easy and pharmacists can help with training. Because of the growing epidemic of opioid-related overdoses, most insurance carriers will pay at least in part for Narcan (naloxone). The Good Samaritan laws in California protect individuals administering Narcan (naloxone). Calabasas Pharmacy is proud to offer Narcan to all our community members and will work with your insurance to get you the best coverage. Let’s come together as a community in unity and strength in the fight against opioid-related overdoses.

Let's Keep Kids Creative!

Kids are naturally curious and creative. One of the most important tasks for parents and teachers is to nurture their blossoming creativity.

The third full week in September has been deemed National Keep Kids Creative Week. It was formed to get kids’ creative juices flowing for not just a week but throughout the entire year.

“Creativity

is intelligence having fun.” – Albert Einstein

One of the best ways to foster your child’s creativity is to provide resources such as art supplies and unstructured playtime. Set aside special clothing and safe areas at home where they can finger paint, mold clay, and create colorful jewelry to their hearts’ content without worrying about making a mess.

All it takes is imagination

Provide a few simple tools, such as pencils, paint, and paper, and let your kids explore. Let them collect rocks from

the yard to paint. Offer praise to bolster their self-esteem and withhold judgment as it tends to dampen budding creativity. Bake cookies together; your kids can decorate and adjust the recipes, learning about substitutions. Give them cookbooks geared especially for children. Make bracelets or ornaments together. Use craft kits to spur their imagination and talent. Register them in art, music, or acting classes.

Storytelling remains one of the best sources of inspiration for young children. Read to your kids or make up your own tales. Let them create new plot twists. Supply colored pencils, watercolor paints, and paper so they can write and illustrate stories of their own. Create mixed-media collages and colorful papier-mâché masks with paper and paste made from flour and water. Learn new design and editing software together on the computer and film fun videos to share with family and friends. It doesn’t matter what form kids’ creativity takes, only that it continues to take shape. n

Help Your Kids Score new gOALS

Setting goals is one thing. Completing them is quite another. Parents can help their children learn important life lessons about setting and achieving both long-term and short-term goals.

Achieving goals one by one helps a child grow more self-assured and motivated to succeed. Ask your children to choose an objective, such as getting better grades in school or buying something they want. Help them break it down into smaller steps, such as studying an hour each night or creating a list of chores they can do to raise money. Discuss any obstacles that may occur and ask them how best to remedy them. Leave the decision-making process up to your kids to foster a sense of independence and improve their problem-solving abilities.

Goal setting for younger children

Precisely how to encourage kids to set and achieve goals depends upon their age. While teens already understand the concept, younger children may need a way to visualize the process. Have them draw a ladder or steps and note what’s required to reach each new level. Offer encourage -

ment when they have trouble and reward each new accomplishment with positive verbal reinforcement.

Help them achieve their goals

For example, a child may want to become an actor. Steps might include signing up for the drama club at school, reading plays, taking an acting class outside of school, auditioning for roles, and so on. Discuss the pros and cons of each step. A con might be: Outside classes may take away from studies. A pro would be: You can make new friends and become more at ease in social situations. Before beginning each step, kids might ponder such questions as, “Who can help?” “What do I need?” and “How long will it take?”

Ask them why they’ve chosen certain goals so they can maintain a sense of purpose for each achievement. Remind them that every setback contains a silver lining. What did they learn about themselves and how can they revise their actions to succeed better next time? We’re all so used to instant gratification. Help your kids understand the importance of perseverance and patience—great goals for all of us. n

Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and celebrate our planet. There are many fun and creative ways to mark this special day and engage in activities that promote environmental awareness and conservation. Here are some ideas for fun things you and your family can do for Earth Day.

PLANT A TREE

Planting a tree is a fun way to celebrate Earth Day and to teach children about the importance of trees in our ecosystem. Choose a tree that is native to your area and find a good spot in your yard to plant it. Make it a family event by involving everyone in the planting process.

CLEAN UP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Earth Day is a great time to take action in your local community by organizing a neighborhood cleanup. Encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to join in and make a positive impact on the environment.

START A GARDEN

Starting a garden is another interactive way to celebrate Earth Day and to teach children about sustainable food production. You can start with a small herb garden or container garden and work your way up to a larger vegetable garden.

MAKE ECO-FRIENDLY CRAFTS

Get creative with your family and make eco-friendly crafts such as birdhouses, wind chimes, or bird feeders. Use recycled materials such as cardboard, plastic bottles, or tin cans to create something beautiful and useful.

REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Earth Day is a perfect opportunity to evaluate your family's carbon footprint and take steps to reduce it. Try walking or biking instead of driving, or take public transportation. Encourage your family to turn off lights and electronics when they are not in use and to conserve water.

These are so many fun and creative ways to celebrate Earth Day with your family. Whether you plant a tree, start a garden, or organize a neighborhood cleanup, the important thing is to take action and make a positive impact on the environment.

Style Trends by

This winter I headed to Paris for the annual Paris Déco Off event and found myself back in one of my favorite cities for another adventure filled with design, food, and fun. Paris Déco Off is an event I attend every year. It plays host to all the world’s top fabric, wallpaper, and wall-covering designers showcasing their new lines. This year’s highlights were collections by Pierre Frey, Jim Thompson, and Misia. Their bold patterns and natural palettes will work perfectly in a number of my projects in Malibu and Lake Sherwood.

And then, there’s Paris itself—with its regal treelined avenues like no other and its attention to detail that’s present in every aspect of life. From the food, to the clothes, to the decor, it all has a certain joie de vivre. I fall in love all over again every time.

Can we talk food? One standout culinary experience this trip was a meal I had at Girafe, located in Cité de l’Architecture. The restaurant was flooded with light streaming in from the large floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto a panoramic view of the city. Even more stunning was the view of the Eiffel Tower from the outside patio. The high-panelled ceilings and

satin-lined walls gave the main atrium a sun-soaked feel. The marble bar, with its art deco accents, added refinement. From the menu, I chose both the cod with seasonal roasted vegetables and the salmon over a bed of hot ceviche and quinoa. There were salads with fresh bundles of lightly toasted lettuce, all of it beautifully arranged on the plate. The presentation along with the taste and the ambience all added to the charm.

For more casual affairs, Paris has so much to offer. I always make time for lunch at Les Deux Magots, which opened in 1885 and is one of Paris’s most iconic places to eat. The salmon salad and escargots are two of my favorites. I also love Brasserie Vagenende, with its organic art-deco interiors, complete with mirrored walls and curling woodwork that create a whimsical atmosphere. On the menu is a wide assortment of oysters, and the poached pears are très délicieux!

The gastronomic experiences of Paris are not restricted to brasseries. The boulangeries and patisseries on every street corner have their own unique flare. I especially enjoyed a lovely patisserie right by my hotel on the West Bank, Marvielleuse Année, with its delectable pastries and dramatic crystal chandelier that adorned the entire ceiling. Au revoir. n

HILLSIDE EROSION CONTROL: A Guide to Effective Project Management

Hillside erosion can be a significant problem for homeowners and property managers in Southern California. While hillside erosion can occur naturally over time, the recent heavy rain has accelerated the problem, leading to damage of structures, loss of vegetation, and even landslides. Fortunately, there are several methods that can be used to control hillside erosion, including landscaping, gardening, and the use of retaining walls.

Vitoli Builders is a hillside specialist with an in-house engineering and project management team that specializes in local city codes and building methods to offer homeowners many solutions—from costeffective builds to building on challenging terrains. “Planning of projects is what sets Vitoli above other companies in our field,” shares Kyle Iniguez, project engineer at Vitoli. “We prepare all engineering documentation, reports, and schedules for our clients. When planning hillside improvements, we also pride ourselves in

150 Calabasas style

meticulous and careful consideration of the client’s concept. All aspects of construction are managed by the in-house team to provide a seamless delivery of the homeowner’s dream project.”

Oz Tzalalihin, a Cornell graduate and project manager, also believes that hillsides are not meant to be an eyesore but rather something that can contribute to the beauty and functionality of a home. “As a project manager at Vitoli, I guarantee that 90% planning and 10% proper execution leads to a smooth project,” says Oz.

Landscaping is one way to control hillside erosion. The use of plants, shrubs, and trees can help to stabilize the soil. For example, deep-rooted plants, like grasses and shrubs, can help to hold the soil in place, while trees can help to slow down the flow of water and reduce erosion. When landscaping a hillside, it is important to choose plants that are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions.

Gardening is another effective method for controlling hillside erosion. The use of terraced gardens can help to slow down the flow of water. Terraced gardens can also be used to create a beautiful and functional outdoor space. When creating a terraced garden, it is also important to use plants that are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions.

Retaining walls are another effective method for controlling hillside erosion. Retaining walls can be used to support the soil. There are several types of retaining walls, including gravity walls, cantilever walls, and anchored walls. Gravity walls rely on the weight of the wall to hold back the soil, while cantilever walls use a combination of the weight of the wall and the soil. Anchored walls are anchored to the soil behind the wall to hold back the soil.

Ultimately, hillside erosion can be a significant problem, but it can be controlled using landscaping, gardening, and the use of retaining walls. It is important to choose plants and wall types that are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions. Moreover, it is important to consult with a professional engineer or landscaper to ensure that the chosen methods are appropriate for your specific site and that they are installed properly. n

Farm Fresh | Farmhouse Inn SONOMA COUNTY W

ith warmer weather and more opportunities for road trips and romantic getaways, there’s nothing more appealing than a food-driven wine country escape. And lucky for Calabasas residents, Sonoma County— one of America’s favorites for all things flavorful and comforting—is just a short flight or a few hours’ drive from home.

Among the many winery-adjacent luxe lodges and cottages that put Sonoma on the map, the Russian River Valley-based Farmhouse Inn has been a standard since it opened its doors in 1981. It’s remained true to its roots as a family farm, built in 1837, and then a family-owned country inn, while also appealing to modern tastes with luxury boutique hotel elements. The standards for lodging and dining have been raised even higher under the direction of siblings Catherine and Joe Bartolomei, who took ownership a little over 20 years ago. What began as a six-room refuge now has 25 rooms along with a welcoming Wellness Barn, a pool area, food and winerelated activities, health-driven programming, and more.

Photography by Adam Potts and Farmhouse Inn

Through a recent refurbishing of its late-19th-century buildings by Gina Gattuso and Lisa North of Myra Hoefer Design, Farmhouse Inn’s new modern attributes offset its country authenticity influenced by five generations of Sonoma farmers.

New chefs are in the picture, including Chef de Cuisine Shawn Jackson Clark and Executive Chef Trevor Anderson, who has rebooted the FARMSTAND restaurant and added sophisticated-yet-homey treats with a small-bites menu and curated “Farmhouse Cooler” boxed meals that can be pre-ordered for a day of vineyard tours or a picnic in and around Sonoma’s quaint towns.

The Farmhouse Inn’s restaurant garnered Michelin recognition in the past, and the culinary standards are exceptional with Chefs Jackson and Anderson bringing global flair and techniques to the various menus. The Wine Spectator-winning (“2022

Best of Award of Excellence”) list, blending Sonoma and international selections, only adds to the experience.

Sonoma County’s carefree, rustic chic features prominently in the suites. Large windows and sliding doors beautifully frame the natural surroundings and comfortable outdoor patios with private entrances. The 200-square-foot rooms, perched above the restaurant in the property’s original 1875 farmhouse, are big on style and substance, with gas fireplaces and generous bathrooms with soaker tubs and walk-in steam showers. Two just-added Cottage Petite Suites are awash in a fresh color palette of white, gray, and black framing classic furniture with ticking stripes, four-poster beds, and locally made rustic linen drapes. Bathrooms are dressed up with Carrera marble updated with sharp ceramic subway tile accents as well as heated marble floors and furniture-like vanities.

The 350-square-foot Cottage rooms feature romantic gas fireplaces with a sitting area, steam showers, heated marble floors, relaxing soaking tubs, and quaint outdoor patios with a private entrance. Revamped Cottage Petite Suites blend country-chic interiors with 550 square feet of living space. A beautiful barn door separates an alcove designed for a full-size bed and living space with a gas fireplace, steam shower, heated marble floors, and a relaxing soaking tub. Farmhouse Inn’s amenities, including feather beds, locally made Sumbody bath products, seasonal flowers, high-end complimentary snacks, and a complimentary organic artisan bath bar with a variety of skin-loving delights, further distinguish it from comparable properties.

The inn’s Wellness Barn balances the food-driven decadence with workout sessions for mind and body using local products and various healing modalities. The spa, tucked into the Wellness Barn, follows suit with a variety of facial and body treatments. The concierge team can arrange a variety of off-property adventures, including a walk at nearby Riverfront Regional Park; guided or self-guided bike rides (rental bikes can be delivered to guests daily); and aquatic adventures (whitewater rafting, kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddle boards) along the Russian River. Paso Robles Wine Country

Spring is an exciting time to visit Paso Robles wine country. The vineyards have been pruned, groomed, and are beginning to bloom for a new vintage. The budding vines tint the hillsides in vibrant shades of green with wildflowers dancing between the rows. The air is crisp in the mornings while the bright sun warms the afternoons. There is great energy in the air.

This time of year, wineries begin releasing their newest vintages. With more than 200 wineries to choose from, dozens of wonderful restaurants, and many diverse activities to excite any visitor to Paso Robles wine country, it’s hard to know where to start your spring getaway. So, we’ve taken the guesswork out of planning your trip and crafted a lively itinerary just for you. If this is your first vacation to Paso Robles, we are confident it won’t be your last.

Day One

Whether you’re an avid Paso Robles visitor or a newbie to this world-class wine region, you will soon discover that there is something for every wine-loving traveler. They boast countless options for lodging, from budgetfriendly inns to full-service resorts, vineyard estates to tiny bungalows, deluxe RV properties to vintage trailers.

For this springy trip to Paso, consider staying at a modern hotel boutique located right in downtown Paso Robles, The Piccolo. Right across the street from the downtown park, this is the perfect location to enjoy the Spring Release Weekend downtown tasting, as well as enjoy all that the downtown tasting rooms, shops, and restaurants have to offer. Visit Piccolo’s rooftop bar for a panoramic view of Paso Robles while enjoying a glass of local wine.

Spring Adventure
Plan Your
to

The Paso Robles AVA (American Viticultural Area) is just over 600,000 acres—which is pretty big, right? But the way that the region is laid out makes it so that, no matter where you are staying, you are in very close proximity to a multitude of wineries, great food, and fun experiences. Since it’ll be your first evening in Paso, start by getting the lay of the land and vibe of the community by heading downtown, which is conveniently right out your front door.

Take in the fresh air while you stroll through the four-acre park, which is the centerpiece of downtown, and peruse the many charming shops, restaurants, and art galleries. And then, it’ll be wine time! When is it not? Downtown Paso is home to more than 20 wine-tasting rooms. A few favorites include Sea Shell Cellars, Pianetta, CaliPaso, Copia, Hayseed & Husdon, Herman Story, Derby Wine Estates, Indigené Cellars, and the collective tasting space of the Paso Underground. After tasting at a spot or two, grab a table at Jeffry’s Wine Country BBQ for dinner. Jeffry’s is a favorite local hangout in Paso Robles. Known for its “Wine Country Comfort Food,” Jeffry’s offers a wide variety of delicious house-smoked meats, signature sauces, and award-winning mac and cheese. Take a seat on the spacious outdoor patio around one of the fire pits and enjoy your soul-warming, scratchmade meal.

Local tip : Jeffry’s offers complimentary corkage on wines purchased from downtown Paso Robles tasting rooms. Grab a bottle while you are out tasting and enjoy!

Day Two

Take the backroads back to B & E Vineyard. This working horse and cattle ranch grows and produces lovely red blends, merlot, and cabernet. The rustic tasting room gives you the feel of the cowboy heritage that Paso Robles was built on. It's likely that one of the owners of the ranch will be pouring your wine for you while treating you to good old-fashioned hospitality.

A short drive away is the new kid on the block, Rava Wines + Events. The Ravas, a third-generation farming family, have taken their expertise into the cellar, crafting sparkling wines in the traditional “méthode champenoise” style. Experience this elegant winecountry venue and discover a blend of modern hospitality, fine wines, and your place for future celebrations. Taste through the exquisite wines of Rava on one of the many patios or at our preferred spot next to the pond. For lunch, share a generous cheese and charcuterie board or choose items from the seasonal food menu.

From Rava, head over to the neighboring vineyard and winery and an OG of Paso Robles Wine Country, Still Waters Vineyards. This is an oasis set atop a hill—with views for days, lush gardens, warm hospitality, and award-winning wines.

continued on page 164

Paso Robles Wine Country

Sustainably farmed, Still Waters handcrafts over 22 different wines. Choose from many special tasting locations, like the gazebo, koi pond, olive grove, or under a great oak.

Next, freshen up back at the hotel and prepare yourself for a real treat dining at The Restaurant at Niner Wine Estates. Named #1 Best Winery Restaurant by USA Today and “Top Winery Restaurants in America” by Food & Wine, this experience exemplifies wine country. Seasonal and themed dinners occur on a limited basis. Spring dinners include A Fancy Night Out, Winemaker Dinners, and Vineyard Vista Dinners. Each multi-course, family-style meal is expertly paired with Niner wines and created to highlight the best the season has to offer.

Local tip: Take pictures from Niner with the picturesque Heart Hill in the background.

Day Three

Start day three with coffee from local hangout Spearhead Coffee across the street from your hotel. Next, head west on Highway 46 for coastal views and the brilliant, green, rolling landscape. Just 15 minutes from Paso Robles, crest the Santa Lucia Mountains and be amazed by the Pacific coastline. To the south is the iconic Morro Rock in Morro Bay and the small surfer town of Cayucos.

A tad farther to the north, nestled between pine trees hugging the ocean, is Cambria, with San Simeon, home to the world-famous Hearst Castle and elephant seal rookery, just a tad to the north. Choose one of the few turnouts on Highway 46 for breathtaking views or drive the additional 15 minutes longer to explore Highway 1 to the south or north and the multitude of beaches. It’s good for the soul and one of the most memorable drives in North America.

After epic coastal sights and crisp salty air, head back on Highway 46 and make a left turn onto Vineyard Drive. This

meandering road, which is dusted with bright purple lupin and pastel sweet peas, loops through what’s known as the Westside of Paso Robles wine country. Scattered with highly acclaimed wineries and established vineyards, the offshoots of backroads will lead you to adventure at every turn.

The list of outstanding wineries and unique experiences on Vineyard Drive is a long one. You won’t be able to do them all, but here are a few recommended stops. First, there’s the cheese and wine paring at Jada. We are obsessed with the Jersey Girl Syrah. You can enjoy the wide-open views and handcrafted wines at Paix Sur Terre or head to Oso Libre to taste the Por Vida Estate Blend and their estate beef. Enjoy Brecon Estate for the boutique wine tasting in the gardens and super-cool photo op with the giant hanging Brecon frame. And last, but certainly not least, experience a visit to Whalebone Winery to see THE whalebone pulled from the vineyard, meet some of the nicest people in the world, grab a pic of you and Bentley the Bulldog, and taste and purchase the infamous Bob Wine.

Local tip : Before heading out west for the day, pick up box lunches from Red Scooter Deli. We are obsessed with the tuna’licious and the veggie wrap!

After Vineyard Drive, head back to the hotel and tap into some of those delicious bottles you collected over your two-day itinerary in Paso Robles wine country. Still hungry for more? Head to downtown Paso Robles and let your nose guide the way to another fabulous meal from one of the many chef-owned-and-inspired restaurants.

Local tip: Bring that special bottle you purchased out on the wine trail to dinner. Local restaurants often offer a lower-priced corkage fee for local wines that are not already on their wine list. n
