A NOTE FROM THE

editor

I think many of us are still shocked by how we got here.

Some days we feel normal again. Then, we venture out and see people in masks, which is the standard practice these days. We all hold on to the hope that in the not-so-distant future, we can go back to normal or another new version of normal, less restrictive and still safe.

We want all our local businesses to be open safely and for them to survive this. Remember, if you want to see your favorite restaurant, salon, or store stick around, go there and support them. Buy local instead of online, and buy gift cards if you are still not comfortable going out yet to support a local business. I am so sad every time I hear about another business closing due to COVID-19, either temporarily or permanently.

Our schools are also navigating this storm in the best way they can and setting up new systems and programs. We still have choices in our children’s education, and in our directory, we offer you some of the best options out there. In our Empower section, we focus on the extra help many students and parents need to help our children stay on track.

We were looking for an inspirational family for the cover, and the Miller family came to mind. Mark Miller is the CEO of West Hills Hospital, which puts him front and center in this pandemic. His family understands that a hospital is a 24/7 operation, and Mark takes pride in operating a community hospital.

It is with a heavy heart that we share with you a tribute to Sherry Thomas Blaka, a wonderful light whose life was extinguished too soon. She was a devoted mother, entrepreneur, successful boutique owner, and dear friend to many.

She touched all of us at Calabasas Style magazine over the years, and she will be missed and remembered.

GOODIES TO GO GIVES BACK ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Three local women—Gabrielle Clayman, Sheba Grobstein, and Sharon Lavin—chose to dedicate their recent milestone birthdays in memory of their friend Marty Goldstein who passed away unexpectedly in May 2020. Marty was an active board member of Connecting a Caring Community, a nonprofit organization based in Calabasas, and passionately worked with their Goodies to Go campaign, bringing snacks to thousands of dedicated frontline hospital workers during the COVID-19 crisis. Gabrielle, Sheba, and Sharon asked their families and friends to contribute in honor of their birthdays. The donations allowed them to purchase over 5,000 snacks to support medical workers at many local hospitals, including Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, West Hills Hospital, and more.

Malibu’s Wheels and Waves classic to supercar automotive event was happy to revive their monthly show on Sunday, July 19.

Shortly after the 7:00 a.m. start time, Malibu Country Mart’s main parking lot was full and car enthusiasts and admirers of all ages were ready for a fun affair. Social distancing and mask-wearing were enforced for safety as people from Santa Barbara to Orange County socialized and enjoyed the long-awaited show. The monthly show was hosted by well-known Malibu resident and coloring book publisher Fireball Tim Lawrence with classic background music and live interviews provided by “The Voice of Car Culture,” MC Ken Vela.

She always saw the good in people. She would take people under her wing if they were down and out and help guide them, support them, and give them hope.”

Joyce, her friend of more than 35 years, sheds further light. “Always active in school, Sherry was the life of the party, everyone’s cheerleader and best friend. During her early 30s, Sherry married and moved to Granada Hills, where she gave birth to her son, George, and daughter, Lilliana. Sherry was a devoted mother and her children were the most important thing in her life. “Yet Sherry’s entrepreneurial spirit could not be quenched,” says Joyce. “Sherry put her heart and soul into opening Blush Boutique in Encino in 2006. She had a drive like no other.”

Blush Boutique became a staple in the Valley. This encouraged Sherry to open additional locations in Calabasas and Thousand Oaks. “She dedicated 15 years building her Blush Boutiques into thriving neighborhood gems,” explains Joyce. “Throughout her life, her sweet and happy demeanor won the trust and hearts of many. Even if you met her once, you were a friend for life. She prided herself on helping others, taking advantage of opportunities, and giving back to the community.”

Men have totally different grooming needs than women. The most important thing we hear is that they want to keep it simple. Some women might think men are less patient and want a no-frills approach, yet we know they still want to look well-groomed. I know we women are always jealous when we see how it only takes men 15 minutes to shower, primp, and be ready to go.

Here are the most basic grooming tips we suggest for men, even though we know it might make them take 20 minutes to get ready.

Facial cleaners. Men are known to have both oily and dry skin. For both oily and dry skin, they should wash their face twice a day and after a workout.

Face-treatment masks. Charcoal treatment masks are great to remove oil and dirt, have anti-aging properties, and can reduce wrinkles. A detox mask can be gentle and perfect for sensitive skin and can clarify and soothe the skin.

Scrubs. Scrubs are an easy way to thoroughly clean and exfoliate the face and remove any dirt and dead skin that could clog the pores.

Eye cream. One of the first places men show their age is around their eyes with lines and wrinkles.

Moisturizers. For oily skin, a water-based, oil-free moisturizer would work best. For dry skin, look for a brand that can help the skin retain moisture.

Bronzer. Everyone looks better with a hint of color. If you can’t get it safely and naturally from the sun, there are great bronzers that you apply like a moisturizer.

Pedicures. If you can’t get out for a pedicure, keep toe nails short, treat any athletes foot, and take a pumice stone to the heels. n

What vitamins and supplements can I take to boost my immune system to help prevent or fight off COVID-19?

There are many vitamins and supplements available to increase your immune system, fight off the common cold, or shorten the duration of the flu. There simply have

not been any large, controlled studies on supplement and vitamin use in COVID-19. That being said, the following vitamins and supplements have been theorized and used in patients.

Vitamin C – It has many beneficial properties—such as reducing free radicals and inflammation—and can be taken preventatively and at increased doses with the onset of symptoms.

Vitamin D – The peak of flu season comes at the same time when people get the least sun exposure: the winter. Sun exposure helps the body create vitamin D, so some have theorized that vitamin D may play a role in immune function. Some research supports this idea, and low vitamin-D levels have been tied to respiratory tract infections. Vitamin D is fat soluble so if you consume too much, it can be stored in the body, causing high levels of calcium to develop in the blood.

Zinc – Some scientists have hypothesized that zinc might stop viruses from replicating. It is being used in some hospitalized COVID patients at high doses, but safety at doses above 40mg/day has not been established.

Elderberry – Although there exists a hypothetical benefit of elderberry for the treatment of viral infections, conclusive evidence from high-quality clinical trials is lacking. Some small studies have even shown COVID patients’ conditions worsening with elderberry.

It is best to talk to your healthcare provider before starting any new dietary supplement. As always, stay within the recommended daily allowances/dosages. These supplements may or may not be helpful, but they shouldn’t be harmful at recommended doses.

About eight months later and a year and a half after his surgery, the unexpected guest made a new appearance in our lives. The pancreatic cancer which he had fought so hard to get rid of, was back. Now was no time to give up, or give in, and he fought back just as hard. He began chemotherapy immediately and has been on it ever since. Now at age 86, my grandfather has lived with Pancreatic cancer for the past four years. I always knew there was a possibility that his cancer could return. Now that it has, I will continue to accept whatever life, and the cancer, has in store for our family. I will not stop learning lessons from my grandfather’s experiences, nor will I stop applying those lessons throughout my life...”

With a loud voice I repeated, “I love you Daddy!” Unexpectedly, he opened his eyes, gave the best smile possible “I love you too, Justinie Wieenie.” he whispered. As far as I remember, those were his last words to me. That afternoon, my brother and I spent some time with my dad’s nurse. She had noticed a stamp from my stamp collection on the kitchen table and held it in her open hand.

“Justine and Louis, look at this pretty butterfly,” she said. “After Daddy goes away, and whenever you see a butterfly, it shall remind you of him.”

I studied the stamp closely. It displayed a very detailed image of a beautiful butterfly with its wings spread, showing his pretty colorful markings. It was one of my most meaningful and special moments during dad’s cancer journey. I love butterflies! As a matter of fact, we had just started a butterfly garden in a small butterfly habitat in our living room as dad got sick.

My dad passed away on a Good Friday, two months after his diagnosis with non-small cell lung cancer. It was the most painful day of my life and I miss my dad dearly. Nothing will him back, but he kept his promise of playing with me - in the form of a butterfly...”

Only in the last two years have I started to fathom it. Some people get diseases that aren’t treatable and when they are diagnosed, their whole life shatters apart. They have limited time left. More serious diseases require people to stay in hospitals their whole life and require that they get painful treatments like chemotherapy. Some people even lose the ability to walk or do anything by themselves. I learned that life is so very precious and one never knows when it will come to an end. I decided to live my life without regrets.

ny, Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village was able to host two memorable graduation celebrations adhering to county health guidelines. The first was a drive-by celebration at the school campus on May 28.

On August 2, round two offered a drive-up celebration hosted at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, complete with a stunning coastal backdrop. Families stayed in or near their vehicles as their seniors walked across the stage to hear their name called and receive their diplomas.

Seniors also received a bible with their name inscribed on the cover.

Instead of simple applause, families used car horns to celebrate as their student’s names were called.

With a cumulative 4.72 GPA and 17 advanced placement and honors courses, Benjamin Chung was the class valedictorian. The keynote address was delivered by 2019 Teacher of the Year Jeff Dewey. For more information, visit oakschristian.org.

LOUISVILLE REIMAGINES GRADUATION FOR CLASS OF 2020

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Since the first class graduated in 1964, Louisville High School has celebrated with a ceremony steeped in tradition. “Pomp and Circumstance� signifies the beginning of the ceremony as the graduates proceed in wearing white formal attire and carrying a bouquet of roses. There are speakers, singing, and as a Catholic school, the crowning of the Mary statue.

While it became clear that the traditional Louisville High School graduation event would not be possible, the Adminstration partnered with the students and their parents to devise a way to still have a live ceremony. On Saturday, August 1, families and graduates in their white formal dresses arrived in half-hour intervals. To comply with social distancing requirements, students exited their vehicles one at a time, wearing masks. Each was given a bouquet of pink roses, heard her name announced by Assistant Principal for Academics Dr. Jennifer Aguilar and walked across the senior lawn to receive her diploma from President Dr. Donna Hansen, SSL while parents and family members watched and commemorated this special achievement with photos. Many have discovered they like being homebound and want to make their homes even more accommodating to their needs. They’ve realized it makes all the sense in the world to make home as fun and comfortable as possible. The days of the unused room that collects grown-kids’ toys and old furniture have come a long way. Today’s bonus rooms have been transformed into luxury theaters, club rooms, wine lounges, art studios, 5000-square-foot basements with equinox-quality home gyms and basketball courts, luxury spas with glam makeup rooms, and 20-car-garage car museums.

Harwin and his son, Assistant Coach Logan Harwin, lead their team, the Calabasas Blue Chips, to victory as the 2020 Calabasas Pee Wee Division Champions. Their hardworking team of 7 and 8-year-old boys completed an undefeated season with a record of 11-0.

Throughout the season, the Blue Chips won their weekly games by an average of 30 points each time, although the playoff and championship games were more difficult and ended much closer in score. Coach A.J. and Assistant Coach Logan were incredibly proud of their players for their amazing game play and continued effort and strength throughout the season. TIFA’S CARS AND GELATO EVENT Azzie Fiouzi, owner of recently opened Tifa Chocolate & Gelato in Calabasas, created a sweet treat for car enthusiasts and their families, hosting the first “Tifa Cars & Gelato” on Sunday, July 26. Organized by Azzie’s husband, Arya Fiouzi, and his friends, over 100 classic and exotic cars gathered for display in front of the T ifa store located in the Courtyard at the Commons. The event attracted hundreds of families eager for an opportunity to check out the great cars on display while socially distancing in the big outdoor space. What made the event even sweeter was that guests enjoyed wonder ful handcrafted gelato made in-house just before their arrival. ROCKS TO SPREAD CHEER From Thousand Oaks through Calabasas and into Malibu, many people exercised their bodies but also their creativity by painting colorful, cheerful rocks to scatter throughout local neighborhood sidewalks and on hiking trails and beaches, and there were even some special (but safe) deliveries to front porches. Putting their time to great use during the Safer-at-Home order, some families decorated rocks to line their front yards for passers-by to admire on their outdoor adventures. Other artists chose to be more anonymous, leaving rocks with inspirational words, rainbows, hearts, and more dispersed randomly along a chosen trail. The rock creations were made by all ages and all art levels, making them all unique with different character. Linda Boone became an admired rock artist in her neighborhood, painting nearly 20 rocks for children who left their chosen rocks on her driveway for a treat later. She says it’s the best thing that happened to her during the COVID quarantine.

It was the last Supercar Sunday event prior to the weekly car show having to go on “hiatus” due to the coronavirus pandemic. As many of you know, Supercar Sunday began in the El Camino Shopping Center almost 20 years ago at the V illage Coffee Roaster coffee shop.

here’s no time like the present to experience one of Mother Earth’s most splendid creations, Zion National Park in Southwest Utah. Stunning red rock towers dotted by fragrant pines beckon outdoor lovers of all ages. Whether you rent an RV, overnight at the comfy Zion National Park Lodge, camp beneath a blanket of stars, or

stay in one of the area’s many hotels, you’ll enjoy a vacation to remember.

There’s something spiritual about this place. Perhaps it’s the gorgeous

Take a heavenly hike up Angels Landing. Wade, walk, or even swim in the mighty Virgin River amid the spectacular Narrows. This iconic Angels Landing hike winds through a narrow slot canyon surrounded by sheer cliffs stretching endlessly towards the sky. Other popular canyons include Subway, Mystery Canyon, Pine Creek, Keyhole, and Orderville, some of which are closed during the pandemic. The Canyon Overlook Trail provides a more moderate hike. One of the easiest trails, Pa’rus Trail, is accessible to wheelchairs, bikes, and leashed pets.

Before you hike, check out current weather conditions, as well. Flash floods frequently hit, especially during the summer, turning your delightful expedition into a dangerous undertaking. Weather aside, Zion offers something for everyone.

During summer months, days last longer while the sun stays out until 9:00 at night. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. Mule deer love to graze upon the lodge’s green lawns, in campsite areas, and near Zion Canyon along the Virgin River. You may also spot foxes, squirrels, and bighorn sheep climbing the park’s myriad cliffs. While summer temperatures can reach 100 degrees, autumn and spring offer the most pleasant conditions.

Be sure to drive through the awesome mile-plus-long Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. Oversized vehicles require a permit to pass through. If you have more time on your hands, consider visiting Arches, Canyonlands, and/or Bryce National Park to the north. With so much splendid scenery, you might simply stay at Zion. Merely a three-hour drive from Las Vegas and around eight hours northeast of Los Angeles, magnificent Zion National Park is clearly worth the trip. n Calabasas Style 165
