eady or not, Fall is here and we are left wondering where our summer went. Fall is the reminder that the kids are out of the pool and back in the classrooms. Therefore, our main focus is on “Education, Empowerment and Enrichment” for our children. We are pleased to introduce you to the many wonderful schools in the area with creative as well as challenging curriculums. Along with finding a great school, many of us are looking for empowerment and enrichment classes to get our kids exploring their passions outside the classroom.

For our cover, we chose the Hartmans, a warm and talented family.

The Hartman Family Fairly OddParents Creator and Family at Home in Bell Canyon

A

nyone with kids has probably watched an episode or two of Nickelodeon’s The Fairly OddParents, the multiple Emmy-winning animated favorite that has been airing since 1998. Creator and executive producer Butch Hartman, wife Julieann and daughters Carly and Sophia have called Bell Canyon home for 14 years. The family relocated from Encino because the couple wanted flat usable land for their children to play and for the quality schools. The Hartmans appreciate Bell Canyon’s wildlife and location: far enough away yet accessible to Los Angeles.

Julieann Hartman was an aspiring actress when she began a 14-year stint at ABC’s Jeopardy as a writing supervisor. Hartman decided to trade in time on the 405 for quality time with her babies but soon parlayed her love of fitness to working as an assistant to Billy Blanks in his Tae Bo enterprise. She spent 18 years in Blanks’ Sherman Oaks and Westlake locations before retiring to stay home with her teens and run the family’s non-profit foundation, Hartman House, which assists needy families throughout the world. She’s also serving as co-president of the Theater Arts Boosters at Agoura High, where daughter Sophia attends.

Hartman is a fixture at Nickelodeon, with three shows running on the cable network. Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, and T.U.F.F. Puppy have received Emmy nominations and are viewed by millions of fans worldwide. This past August, Fairly Odd Summer, the series’ third full length live-action feature based on the successful franchise, aired on Nickelodeon. Hartman co-wrote and executiveproduced. Billionfold, Inc., Hartman’s company that co-produces his cartoons, is located in Calabasas. The company also produces music albums for motivated artists who share a goal of helping people.

Butch has passed down his innovative creative side to his daughters. Carly, 19, is an entrepreneur with three businesses: Cora Wear, an Internet-based jewelry and clothing line; RYMAG (Rich Youth Magazine), a quarterly online magazine that supports, highlights, and advertises for young entrepreneurs; and Indie-Go Web Design where the Moorpark College student designs websites.

Following the family’s mission of encouraging others, Carly has started Pageant 360, an inner-beauty pageant, to support girls and young women to be confident leaders and world changers. The premiere pageant was held Aug. 9 in Calabasas, with valuable support provided by sister, Sophia who served as stage manager.

The creative mind behind Nickelodeon’s three series is also a motivational speaker, inspiring adults and kids to make their entertainment-industry dreams come true.

Sophia is starting her junior year at Agoura High, where she’s played volleyball for the past two years and is very active in the school’s performing arts department, performing with the on-

campus improv group, Comedy Sportz. This year, she will be serving as a junior class officer.

Julieann notes, “We are all very busy, going in a lot of directions, but we make sure we have family time together each week. We hang out in the pool together. We go to church together. We work out together. We love helping people, which is why we started Hartman House in 2005.”

The Hartman House, funded by donations, helps needy people in the U.S., Africa, Haiti and Guatemala. Inspired during a toy-drive distribution in Uganda, the Hartmans started The Hartman School of Destiny to open free public schools for Ugandan youth. The team works to eliminate hunger in L.A., Texas and Guatemala, with plans to extend the program to include more U.S. and African cities as well as sites in India, Asia and Latin America. Since 2006, The Hartman House has provided some 7,200 Thanksgiving dinners to underprivileged U.S. families.

16th Century Photography by Renee Appell Imagine being in 16th century Italy, listening to exquisite music performed by a six-voice choral ensemble in a lovely church. Imagine being in the presence of guest of honor Count Ludovico Marenzi, since his illustrious ancestor, Luca Marenzio, composed these beautiful songs. It kind of felt that way recently at Church of the Epiphany in Oak Park. Led by choral director Lesley Leighton (artistic director of the regional Los Robles Master Chorale) the musicians performed flawlessly, bringing to life an amazing variety of madrigals to the audience’s delight. It was a memorable event and also raised funds for New West Symphony.

The seventh annual Nataline Sarkisyan Fashion Legacy was held on July 12th at Mercedes Benz of Calabasas. Despite being diagnosed with leukemia, 17-year old Nataline Sarkisyan did not let that tarnish her hopes for becoming a fashion designer.

Unfortunately, Nataline lost her courageous battle in 2007. After her passing, Nataline’s family discovered her sketchbook featuring 22 designs. Upon such a discovery, her family knew exactly how to celebrate their daughter’s memory.

In homage to her July birthday and her dreams of becoming a fashion designer, the Nataline Sarkisyan Foundation puts together a Fashion Legacy where Nataline’s designs are brought to life. Sean Fortier, Mercedes Benz of Calabasas general manager, presented the foundation with a $7,000.00 check. The foundation uses such donations along with the proceeds from ticket sales to fund educational grants to local students hoping to fulfill their dreams in the fashion industry.

SUNLIFE ORGANICS Brings a Healthy Lifestyle to Calabasas

unLife Organics founder and owner Khalil Rafati brings his unique lifestyle brand to The Commons at Calabasas, joining his wildly successful stores in Malibu and Thousand Oaks. In 2011, he opened the first SunLife Organics at Point Dume Village with his girlfriend, Hayley Gorcey. The mission was to share with their neighbors, friends and community an opportunity to experience what they had and to access true nourishment. Beyond that, they wanted a place where the community could come together, away from the BlackBerrys, iPads and Facebook, to a place where people could meet up after a surf, paddle or yoga. A place where people could strive to love, heal and inspire one another.

Flash back to 2003. Rafati was replacing an addiction to drugs and alcohol with a pack-a-day cigarette habit, processed foods, energy drinks and copious amounts of coffee -- a lifestyle that left him “completely drained, devoid of energy and vitality.” Depression was a constant, he says. He traveled to India, Indonesia and Central America, meeting with everyone from surfers and street vendors to Hindu doctors and gurus specializing in medicine and prolonging life for answers. He explored Western medicine and met with longevity experts, finally concluding that age-old advice was still the answer: Eat your fruits and vegetables. Rafati has spent years seeking out the best organic produce, super foods

Rafati notes, “I don’t hide the fact that I had a problem with drugs and alcohol in the past because I feel I have so much valuable information to share with these kids, many of whom are about to leave for college and about to be on their own for the first time. I regularly sponsor movie nights, bowling and pizza parties for my employees and show them how to have an incredible time without drugs or alcohol.”

Jon and Dustin’s Run to the Biltmore Four Seasons in Santa Barbara The sound of exotic cars cruising through the back roads of Santa Paula, Ojai and Santa Barbara was a symphony to all encountering the group. Twisting and turning on the open roads, the early sunlight glistened off some of the rarest and most exotic of cars complementing the beautiful surrounding landscape.

Two friends with a passion for cars, Jon Johnson and Dustin Troyan, decided that an exotic-car drive for their friends was long overdue., Knowing the scenic beauty that is so close and with an intimate knowledge of the amazing back roads, they planned an amazing event for their friends.

Starting at The Auto Gallery McLaren Dealership in Calabasas, 25 exotic-car owners and their co-pilots headed north to the Biltmore Four Seasons in Santa Barbara for a day of driving and pampering.

The drive was perfect. Just enough driving on some of the world’s finest roads and a warm reception at the Biltmore. A first class event by any stretch, and an absolutely wonderful group of friends. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday Morning.

Local Realtors Join Hands with the Greater Conejo Valley for the 5th Annual

Wine Festival

Local realtors from the Women’s Council of Realtors joined forces with the greater Conejo Valley community on Aug. 14 for the 5th Annual Wine Festival at the Silverstar AG Mercedes Benz in Westlake Village. A portion of the funds raised from the affair will be donated to Habitat for Humanity in Ventura County as well as to the Women’s Council of Relators educational programs.

Guests enjoyed a live fashion show featuring luxury brands such as Tommy Bahama and White House Black Market. While the live band entertained guests with Latin music tunes, guests also enjoyed a wine-tasting experience from some of California’s finest vintages as well as flavorsome treats from various local restaurants such as the Zooza Café and the Grill on the Alley.

Some auction items included Ben Bridge jewelry, a weekend use of a Mercedes Benz car and spa packages.

It takes a Village to Heal a Man Calabasas High School teacher Brian Ludmer

A

community, just like a human body, is made up of individual entities. When one member of that living organism is faced with a seemingly insurmountable set of circumstances, the rest of the body must rise to support it and help it heal. This is exactly what has happened in the case of 29-year old Calabasas High School teacher Brian Ludmer.

After being wounded in the leg from the November 2013 LAX shooting rampage, Brian found himself “completely dependent on other people’s assistance.” In the first month after the trauma, he says he was “feeling very sorry for myself, helpless, and completely at the mercy of my injury with a recovery outlook that was, at the time, very unclear.”

Little did Brian know then that an incredible group of people were committing to seeing Brian through this extremely trying recovery process. One couple, Matt Fuscaldo and Dr. Melissa Golde, came into Brian’s life “at exactly the right time.”

The two own a health and fitness center called Thnk whose purpose is to “provide a unique environment where the finest specialists in movement and nutrition collaborate to ensure our client’s success,” Matt says. In the spirit of “love people first,” Thnk reached out to Brian

and took him into its capable hands, vowing to work with him until he makes a full recovery. With the couple’s help, a very well rounded and holistic approach, and the love and support of his community, Brian says he definitely is on the right track and remains hopeful of the future. He plans to use his experience as a catalyst for meaningful, thought-provoking discussions with his students.

“The support has been overwhelming,” he says, “The generosity and compassion I have received is so far above and beyond what I would have any right to expect. ... I truly feel like I cannot say ‘thank you’ enough. The support from the community has been truly profound.”

Brian was not the only one changed. Matt says that working with Brian has made such a lasting impact on the couple and the way they run Thnk that every year, they want to sponsor a special case “to display what people can do and achieve.”

In the months after the shooting, Brian continues to be an advocate for comprehensive gun control. He implores his fellow citizens to “come to our senses as a nation and actually take the meaningful steps towards regulating this free flow of guns, or we have no right to expect anything to change, and we must not be surprised when the next gunman purchases an assault rifle and shoots up a school, movie theatre or an airport.” n

Family day not only included fabulous food ranging from Chef Nick’s delicious dining-hall buffet to freshly grilled hamburgers and sno-cone snacks, but there were also activities for guests of all ages. Adults were able to gamble in good fun at the casino in the Clubhouse while the youngest guests were able to enjoy a bounce house.

ow was your summer? Hopefully, you had a chance to enjoy some adventures. Whether you were fishing, hiking, sightseeing or reading by the pool, you likely had a blast. These activities allowed you to rest and recharge, accumulate new knowledge and experiences … and some sun damage!

You want your friends and family to see the islands in your photo book and not on your cheeks! The term “pay to play” applies here.

The more fun you had, the more evidence you are likely to show in the form of brown spots and wrinkles on your skin (even if you wore sunscreen). Luckily, we can reverse a lot of this damage with the right dermatological treatments and great skin care.

Go Lightly. Light peels such as Jessner’s or salicylic acid peels have little down time and great results. I usually recommend a series of three to four, about three weeks apart. These peels result in a slight flaking that resembles dry skin. Sun protection with SPF greater than 60 is important for the following seven days.

A post-peel skin-care regimen is more effective when the thick stratum corneum of the skin is opened. Active ingredients penetrate the skin more effectively, and the skin looks smoother and brighter.

Go Deeper. Fraxel 1550 is a fractionated resurfacing device that goes deeper in the skin but with less down time. A sunburn-like appearance is expected for two to three days. After day three, the skin looks smoother, plump and more even. A series of four to six treatments is effective for setting the “reset button.” Acne scars and deep lines are remodeled. Pigment is improved. For a laser

peel with a bit more down time but which removes pigment evenly, two treatments with the Fraxel 1927 are recommended.

Spot Treat. The Perfecta is a laser device that can be used to spot-treat individual lesions. It is great for the dark freckles, or “liver spots,” that form on the hands, arms, legs and face. This treatment has minimal down time. Brown spots turn browner, shrivel and peel off within seven to 14 days, depending on the area of the body treated. Hands and lower legs are the most popular areas treated with this device.

As we say a fond farewell to the summer, we should also say goodbye to some of its unwanted effects. Caring for the skin with procedures, products or both will help you maintain a youthful glow. When deciding what treatment choice is right for you, remember that all skin types are not the same.

Understanding your skin type, what you would like to correct and the safest, most effective way to correct it are required. Be sure to seek advice from a qualified professional who has access to a range of devices and products from which to choose. n

De-Freckle. Freckles are cute, until they start becoming larger and darker and coalescing into brown spots. Have you noticed that the skin on your chest and neck looks different than the sun-protected skin covered by your bathing suit? The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device is what we use to perform photo-facials. These are recommended in a series of four. The treatment has very little down time. It targets brown photodamaged areas that are noticeable on the sun-exposed areas of the body such as the chest, face and arms. It also builds collagen and reduces redness.

Maintain. Besides a post-procedure regimen, we recommend a maintenance regimen, which includes sun protection and antioxidants, glycolics and retinoids. People ask me how long will the results from these procedures last. This depends on what you do with your skin afterward. If you lie in the sun, don’t wear sunscreen, drink excessively, smoke, are in poor health or in a highstress state, the results may not last long. If you wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water, rest, practice moderation and avoid smok-

Local Jewish Community Ushers in a New Year

T

he evening of Sept. 24 will find Jewish families all over the world ushering in the year 5775 and the 10-day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur known as the High Holy Days. The High Holy Days offer a chance to reflect on the past year and consider future changes, especially involving one’s relationships with family members, community and God.

Prayer, whether traditional, modern or a combination, within a community serves an important role. Traditions include the blowing of the shofar, a ram’s horn during services; and Tashlich, the symbolic casting of sins represented by pieces of bread, in flowing water.

The New Shul of The Conejo’s Rabbi Michael Barclay says the High Holy Days are “a touchstone bridge connecting those before and those after as human beings and members of the Jewish community.” He sees value in not only knowing from where traditions came but also adapting and creating new traditions to be more inclusive and applicable in our lives today. One of the rabbi’s missions at The New Shul is to invite the community to participate in services.

Both The New Shul of Conejo, in Agoura Hills, and Congregation Or Ami in Calabasas aim to create a meaningful High Holy Day experience. “The New Shul of Conejo is committed to integrating joy and ancient wisdom through music and teachings,” Rabbi Barclay says. Or Ami Rabbi Paul Kipnes shares, “High Holy Day services don’t need to be painful. They should be stirring (and) motivating, to make you think and stop thinking, to cry and struggle, to go on a journey like a great concert, movie or book.”

In addition to reflection, prayer and communal gathering, observing family traditions and preparing recipes passed down from generations play an important role in the High Holy Days. For Sharon Riche of Calabasas, the holidays are a reminder of her long-gone parents. Riche prepares her mother’s chicken dish for the holidays.

“I hope my family can feel the love and care that I felt whenever my mother prepared a beautiful meal for us,” Riche says.

Karen Gaspin of Hidden Hills and her sister recreated a favorite mock chopped liver her Russian grandmother used to prepare in her onebedroom Brooklyn apartment. Her grandmother was an excellent cook but never wrote down any recipes. Today, Gaspin and her family enjoy it as an appetizer before the holiday meal.

Calabasas’s Michelle Reitzin-Bass prepares her Grandma Fox’s roasted potatoes, her mother’s confetti gelatin mold and her family’s traditional brisket. One of Reitzin-Bass’s favorite new traditions is gathering Or Ami congregants at Paradise Cove for Tashlich.

Several years ago, Debra Goldfarb started what would be a touching tribute to her family’s matriarchs and patriarchs. She traced the hands of greatgrandparents, grandparents and a great-aunt on a white linen table runner.

Each family member included a message in his or her own handwriting.

“We have hung that runner on our mantel for every holiday, and at the start of each holiday meal, we read the messages from them,” she says.

“Since that date, we have lost both great-grandparents and, sadly, my mom this past year. I can’t tell you how much I treasure that silly white table runner now. … Their words are precious, as are the reminder of their strong hands always over our shoulders to help guide us through the holidays and through our lives.”

Jews typically join other members of the Jewish community in prayer and reflection for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. For those unaffiliated with a temple, The New Shul will offer tickets for the High Holy Days, which may be purchased through the website or by phone.

Chabad of Calabasas also opens its doors to the Jewish community.

Chabad of Calabasas will hold High Holy Days Services at Calabasas High School. Giving Back

“It’s my birthday and I can give away if I want to!”

T

hat was the exact sentiment that Sophie Helfend, Amanda Feenberg, Sophie Cohan and Ashley Bennish chanted on their 14th birthdays. As a group, these girls planned a birthday bash where, in lieu of receiving gifts, they asked that their 160 guests donate funds to the Mattel Children’s Hospital for terminally ill children. “The girls feel like they are blessed in so many ways and wanted to give some of that back to people that really need it,” says Ivette Helfend, Sophie’s mother.

The party was a huge success -- the girls raised $6,000. These A.C. Stelle eighth graders were more than eager to deliver the funds to the hospital June 16. “It was so special because the idea came 100 percent from them,” Helfend says. “Maybe this (donation) can inspire others to give to the less fortunate. It doesn’t matter how old we are, everyone can make a difference if they just try.

It could change someone’s life.”

aa Logan and the Calabasas Country Club

L

ogan Nobriga is not your average 9-year old boy; he is fighting cancer for the second time, and the Calabasas Country Club is happy to lend a helping hand.

Owner Gene Axelrod and the board of directors unanimously voted to donate $1,000 to Logan and his family. Being a three-time cancer survivor himself, board vice president Spencer Shiffman could not resist reaching out to Logan.

Showing his support, the club’s head golf professional, Ken Simonds, taught Logan how to putt on the greens.

Logan was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at 4 and began his second set of treatments in May 2013. Battling ALL full-time has hindered mother Krysha’s ability to work. “It goes without saying that the donation is a tremendous help,” she said.

“When meeting Logan, I thought he looked pretty darn good,” Shiffman says. “I believe that he can beat this disease and live a long fruitful life! People come together in crisis, and if we can make a difference, even in a small way, it’s worth every bit of it.”

W

ho does not love to bowl a strike for a good cause? Tempt owner Tracy Dekel orchestrated a fundraiser that raised more than $10,000 to help find a cure for Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer. Chrissy and Sundip Shah are dear friends of Tracey. Therefore, inspired by the personal story of the Shahs’ 22-year-old daughter Tahnee Shah, Tracy understood the urgency of finding a cure.

“Tahnne is also friends with my daughter, Skylar,” Tracy said.

“When I heard the devastating news about Tahnee’s diagnosis, I felt desperate to do something. Although nothing I could do would change Tahnee’s condition, I still needed to attempt. I have never organized anything like this before.”

The bowling fundraiser that included a pizza party took place on June 22nd at AMF Woodlake Lanes. With a $50 minimum donation per person, all proceeds went directly to the research company at Rockefeller University in New York that is solely working non-stop to find a cure for this specific cancer.

The event was not just entertaining but a true success that brought together family, friends and community alike.

he Headline Salon made headlines by hosting a fundraiser to raise money and awareness for the National Brain Tumor Society. Unfortunately, cancer is becoming more prevalent in our loved ones’ lives. Thus, when salon owner Lidia Ortiz discovered that the grandson of six-year employee MaryJane Trifon had cancer, Lidia knew she had to help. She and MaryJane rallied together to orchestrate the fundraiser for Nate Newman that brought in $5,248.

Doctors found a brain tumor in 13-hear-old Nate. That was two years ago, and now he is in remission. Nate is using his experience as motivation to give back by mentoring other children who have to spend their youth battling cancer.

“Nate Newman is an amazing young boy,” Lidia says. “He has dealt with this unfortunate situation with great courage.

No matter was he has gone through with chemotherapy and radiation, he has always walked into the salon with a huge smile on his face.”

ver the past three years, the volunteer non-profit organization The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools has supported the Las Virgenes Unified School District by raising more than $750,000 in privately donated funds to hire classroom teachers, reduce classroom sizes and expand counseling programs. Funds are raised through an annual appeal as well as through events such as the hugely successful The Event and a new venture, The Carnival, which takes place Sept.

12-14 at Whizin Market Square in Agoura Hills.

The Foundation’s goal is to support exceptional education, and the work could not come at a more critical time, as every district in the state scrambles to identify the resources necessary to provide a high-quality education.

California currently ranks 49th in per-pupil funding, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the publication Education Week, despite the relative affluence of the community. Districts such as Las Virgenes will receive less money per student due to the governor’s new budget allocation that favors commu-

nities with higher concentrations of students from low-income families and where English is not the first language. “I think most members of our community would be surprised to learn how little of their taxes go directly to our local schools,” Las Virgenes School Board President Jill Gaines said. “The majority of local tax revenues earmarked for schools now go to Sacramento, where they are parsed out around the state. This reality is one of the many reasons we are so lucky in our community to have a dedicated non-profit foundation working to support our specific goals.”

The district partnered with The Foundation in 2010 to elevate understanding of this funding reality and to develop a culture of giving within the community. According to district Superintendent Dan Stepenosky, The Foundation’s impact has already been farreaching. “They have worked tirelessly to unite businesses and residents throughout our community to provide sustainable and consistent funding for our schools with phenomenal results,” he says.

“Homeowners in the Las Virgenes community are incredibly fortunate to be able to call one of the state’s top performing districts home,” says real estate agent Valerie Punwar of Berkshire Hathaway’s Calabasas office. “Not only does the school district serve as a fantastic draw for new home buyers, its educational gold standard easily increases local property values above neighboring communities with less-performing schools.”

ontessori of Malibu Canyon is a Calabasas-based early-childhood education center that serves children 2-6 years of age.

This school opened in 2009 and was founded by proud local parents Negin Ghaffari (Ph.D. in Educational Studies, Claremont Colleges) and her husband Kevin, a pediatrician and neonatologist. The couple decided to spare no time or expense in creating a school where they would be proud to enroll their two sons, Cameron, 8, and Aiden, 3.

Negin and Kevin live in Calabasas Park Estates and have passionately dedicated their lives to the health and education of their children as well as children in Calabasas, Agoura Hills and Malibu. Their own childraising experiences, combined with their impressive educational backgrounds, provide them with the optimal pedigree to run and operate this ideal learning center for young children.

Negin is a former teacher with more than 18 years of teaching experience. In addition to her doctorate, she holds a master’s in administration from the Claremont College, where she received the prestigious Annenberg Doctoral Fellowship. Negin has also taught teacher education and served as an educational consultant reviewing many public- and private-school programs.

By Marc Cohen t seems like we were just talking about what to do with the kids to entertain them during the summer months. Now, we focus on what might increase their knowledge and their pleasure.

The joy of new-world technologies lies in the ability to achieve in a manner that encourages a student to participate. The secret is to create programs that educate and entertain at the same time. Whether it’s for your child or perhaps yourself, there are a wide variety of options.

If you are considering changing jobs or careers, look into one of the many resume applications such as “Resume Builder. “ Often, your resume is the first step to making that great first impression.

For instance, “Poems By Heart” by Penguin Classics not only offers you a large selection of poems, it does it in a way that helps you to read and memorize it. They use a “fill in the word” type of program, making it into a type of game. The app is free and includes two poems. It is available in the Apple app store.

Trying to make you way to Carnegie Hall? After practice, practice and more practice, check out the many types of programs that teach you how to play musical instruments. “Learn Piano HD” is available from Mahalo and gives you a beginner course in scales, finger positions and chords. “Ultimate Guitar Chords” by Ultimate Guitar USA will play each chord so you hear how it should sound. There is even an app called “Cleartune-Chromatic Tuner” that can help tune your musical instrument.

ITunes U is an excellent way to gain access to complete university courses across the country. It allows students to participate in private courses. It provides a complete interaction with other students as well. Many of the courses are free, and you can take notes or highlight text using iBooks.

Whether you are looking to enhance your life through education, music or just plain fun, there are thousands of easy and entertaining ways to do this. All you need is a computer, tablet or smartphone. Who knows? You might be the next Mozart or Adam Levine.

From biology to psychology to philosophy of law, there is an app that will cover virtually any topic you are interested in exploring. If you want to learn more about money, you can subscribe to “Movies about Money.”

This shows you movies that educate you about the philosophy and history of money, as well as the practical uses (like buying that tropical island you have your eye on).

Every Sunday morning from 7-10 at the Westfield Promenade in Woodland Hills, auto enthusiasts of all ages and all marques converge. Why is it called Super? There is nothing quite like it in the world. Most car shows feature just one make or model.

However, Supercar Sunday is the entire car community. All ages, all walks of life.

At Supercar Sunday, it is common for cars valued in the multiple millions of dollars to be parked right next to works-in-progress.

Cars from the early 1900s sputter in and park next to cars with more than 1,000 horsepower that can speed up to more than 245 mph. That is some diversity.

Seven young women took the stage Aug. 9th and showed Calabasas what they could do to change the world. These movers and shakers were part of a new program called Pageant 360. The pageant is open to females ages 14-24 and provides a perfect venue to showcase passions, intelligence and leadership. Creator Cary Hartman says of the event, “I feel that young girls need to know that they don’t have to compromise themselves in order to be heard or to fit in.” This is not your average beauty pageant. You won’t find any of these girls crossing the stage in skimpy bikinsi. Instead, the categories included fitness wear, worn while describing the contestant’s involvement in community outreach, and a talent section.

These young women spent weeks before the event getting to know the other young ladies, working on choreography and blocking, evolving their platforms for change, and developing the confidence to use their voices in a public forum. Risk in PERSPECTIVE

By Mark Wendell s safe as houses” is an old expression that has new irony for those of us who weathered the Great Recession, when the home mortgage market proved to be built on sand rather than rock, and many homeowners found themselves in foreclosure. “As safe as a bank vault” is another expression that doesn’t mean the same today. As Warren Buffett explained,

“To make money they didn’t have and didn’t need, they risked what they did have and did need.”

Banks and insurance companies failed at their basic job of evaluating risk, deluding each other into a belief that there was no such thing as failure for them. Instead of realizing how much was really at risk, they trusted triple-A ratings that proved to be illusions, and bank securities that were anything but.

We’ve been left wondering if there’s such a thing as a no-risk investment. Apart from investing in the education of a child — where the upside is infinite and return can be enjoyed daily, long before maturity — it’s hard to point to one.

There’s value in the capacity to tolerate risk, a quantifiable figure in many situations.

Investors expect to be compensated for taking on a burden of risk. The greater the

Financial Brief amount of risk an investor is willing to take, the greater the return expected. For example, a bond issued by a corporation offers a return higher than the going rate of a U.S. Treasury bond simply because a corporation is much more likely to go bankrupt than a nation of 300 million people that has prospered for centuries. The same direct-proportion relationship applies to equity investments or stocks: Generally speaking, investing in a well established, dividendpaying enterprise has a lower risk of dramatic loss than does pushing chips into the ante of an unproven start-up’s initial public offering, but also a fainter possibility of skyrocketing returns.

Risk is, essentially, a subjective psychological phenomenon, the perception of one’s personal fears processed through our futuregazing frontal lobes into scary what-if scenes.

Investment advisors evaluating the needs of a new client often ask a series of sophisticated questions that serve the same purpose as the pain chart in a doctor’s office, where a smiley face gradually loses its smile. The basic question is, “On a scale of one to 10, how much pain do you feel at the thought of losing everything?” What the advisor needs to know is whether the client can sit in only mild discomfort while watching a portfolio depreciate or if he’ll be hopping around the room in agony.

Once that’s determined, a good financial advisor should be able to prescribe investments that are both effective and tolerable.

Investopedia describes an investment manager’s responsibility: “Developing a proper asset allocation in a portfolio requires balancing many factors, including risk tolerance, cash flow needs, time horizon and return requirements.” Investment advisors have refined dependable methods for coping with the multi-dimensional, fluid nature of risk. Apart from buy low, sell high they include:

Diversify broadly — Choose assets based not just on their own volatility and expected return, but also those of other asset groups in the same portfolio. Combine a variety of investment groups or classes reflecting a range of strategies and management styles.

Rebalance periodically

— As one part of a portfolio appreciates strongly and other portions perform less effectively, move funds around to take advantage of gains and head-off losses, with the object of bringing the portfolio back into the original intended range of risk-versus-reward measurements.

Monitor closely, but sit tight — Markets gyrate dynamically, a fact no investor should shrug off by leaving assets in the dark to grow unseen like mushrooms. Stay up to date with tides, forecasts and warnings. On the other hand, keep a steady hand on the tiller. There’s a common tendency to get lulled into a false sense of security during booming markets and then swing to excessive caution when values drop, leading us to invest more aggressively in up markets than in down markets. Raging bull markets are likely to have huge hidden risks, however, and staying true to a strategy tailored to personal tolerance for risk can yield acceptable returns even during hair-on-fire bear-market scares.

Make adjustments as results and changing personal objectives warrant — Bear in mind a person’s comfort level with risk is also dynamic; generally, we tolerate risk during our years of building investments but want to minimize risk as we approach a time when we may need to draw on the assets we’ve built.

There’s no substitute for the client’s personal involvement, acceptance of responsibility and attention to planning in the financial advisor’s task of fine-tuning the balance between risk and return. It would be nice to have scientifically accurate numbers to use, but since risk is a highly personal and subjective experience, the best guidance an investor can give his advisor comes from honest self assessment: How do we perceive risk? How have we reacted to actual risk experiences in the past? Louisville High School Raffles off a

Classic Ferrari

By Sabrina Samedi Calling all car buffs and collectors: Louisville High School has an iconic piece of history it is willing to part with! Louisville, a Catholic all-girls high school, has recently become the recipient of the very unique and valuable 1938 Ferrari 308GTS. Donated by the estate of the car’s previous owner, William A. Schampeau, this classic sports car will be raffled to fund an annual scholarship in his name.

“Because of Mr. Schampeau’s generosity, Louisville’s young women will be inspired to pay it forward and share with others the knowledge they have received through a Louisville education,” school president Sister Myra McPartland says.

The 308GTS is the famous red Ferrari model made popular by Tom Selleck in the hit TV show Magnum PI. The Louisville High School Ferrari Raffle is open to everyone in the local community as well as Ferrari fans nationwide. The raffle began in July, and the winning name will be selected on Nov. 8 at Louisville’s annual QUEST Dinner and Auction.
