I love when the leaves begin to change colors and the colors and hues turn to burnt shades of orange, yellow, red, and brown. The air gets crisper in the mornings, and the need for fireplaces and blankets finally returns… even if I have to admit that I really like those fireplaces and blankets anyway, just for the cozy ambience. Our children are back in school, and we finally get some peace and quiet. I love this back-to-school time and find it ideal for our annual education issue. Despite being diagnosed with leukemia, there were some things that leukemia just could not take from Nataline, like her teenage dreams and hopes of organizing and holding a fashion show.

Nataline lost her courageous battle on December 20, 2007, but her dream is being fulfilled and her loving, generous spirit lives on forever.

Every July, in homage to Nataline’s birthday, Fashion Legacy is held.

Jonathan, originally from San Carlos, moved with his family to Westlake Village at age 11 so that his younger brother could pursue his acting career.

Meanwhile, Jon attended and graduated from Westlake High School and has been living in the L.A. area ever since. Jonathan is Senior Vice President of the publicly traded securities firm Hilltop Securities, where he manages money for individual investors and corporations across the globe, including several clients in the Calabasas area. At Hilltop Securities, he is able to advance people’s wealth and protect their legacies while operating on a strong ethical foundation with his clients’ long-term best interests at heart.

In his spare time, Jon enjoys playing ice and roller hockey in local leagues. When he is not on skates, Jon gets his sweat on in the boxing ring and during his daily runs on the steep hills and stairs around their home.

Eva is originally from Shawnee, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. At the tender age of 17, she left for college in Germany and later received her BA from a private international university in London.

She has since completed graduate programs in humanitarian aid and nonprofit management in London and Jamaica, trauma and violence at NYU, and psychology at Pepperdine, where she is currently a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology. Clearly with a sense of adventure and a heart for the human experience, Eva’s studies, work, and traveling spirit have taken her to nearly 30 countries. She wears many hats as a Life Coach and Therapist, and a Rodan+Fields premium skincare business owner.

She is simultaneously developing a nonprofit called Shobha to help underserved women with breast cancer in L.A. Eva makes a point to stay fit by running the local hills and taking on the

University Village Thousand Oaks residents, their adult children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren kept a weather eye open for pirates, exotic animals, and other unusual visitors at the retirement community’s recent Family Day. More than 2,000 residents and their family members attended the community’s annual event, set to a pirate theme this year.

Swashbucklers roamed the grounds and gambled for treasure at the “Aces and Eights Casino” while the littlest buccaneers enjoyed a pirate ship bounce house. Back by popular demand, this year’s event also featured 13 exotic animals provided by the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar, California.

Musical entertainment, magic, crafts, caricatures, bocce ball, putting, and swimming also provided a full day of activities for young and old. Inside-out beauty is what defines “ingestible beauty.” These are things we eat and drink that contribute a healthy glow to the skin. They provide raw materials that the skin needs to reduplicate collagen, naturally provide moisture (sebum), and protect it from damage. When it comes to food, as we all know, humans are incredibly individual. One person can gorge on a whole tub of peanut butter and look amazing, while another person would end up with skin looking like an oil slick—or worse—have an allergic reaction. From a morning fun run to a pet show to the fireworks spectacular, this year’s July 4th was one of the best ever.

Guests started the day with the 40th Annual Lakeside Fun Run, 4-Mile Run, 2-Mile Run, 2-Mile Walk, and Âź-Mile Kids Race at the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center. At 11:00 a.m., on the greenbelt adjacent to the Tennis & Swim Center, pet lovers participated in the annual pet show, with fun contests in several different categories.

From noon to 5:30 p.m., they enjoyed the Summer Splash Party, featuring a family barbecue, tennis, free swimming, and games.

Then, starting at 5:00 p.m., at Calabasas High School, there was the Family Fun Zone, featuring games, prizes, stilt walkers, balloons, and more, not to mention a live dance party. The evening concluded with the breathtaking, musically choreographed fireworks spectacular at Calabasas High School.

Since 1974, The Boulevard School in Woodland Hills has provided preschool to children ages 9 months through 6 years. They also offer mommy/daddy and me classes for 9 to 24-month olds, and a toddler program for kids aged 18 to 30 months. Their programs are available as either a half or full day, two to five days per week plus extended days before and after school.

Family-run since 1980, Shirley Mauer began at the school as a teacher in 1975 and soon advanced to director. In 1980, Shirley’s dream came true when she and her husband, Eric, and her brother, Morty, purchased the school. Over the next few years, they increased enrollment and expanded the school to 17 classrooms. They continue to employ a caring, hard-working staff credentialed and experienced in early childhood education.

The curriculum includes language and listening skills plus a focus on developing social skills and problem-solving abilities. The school’s well-honed academic program gives each child a sound foundation in phonics, reading, writing, math, and independent learning skills. The small class sizes allow each child to progress at his/her own rate. The Boulevard School campus also includes an outdoor park-like atmosphere with a different yard for each age group. This enables students to play safely while developing motor skills at an age-appropriate level.

The school offers a traditional foundation of arts and crafts, science, music, body movement, story-time, cooking, and age-appropriate academics. Parents can add extracurricular programs such as karate, gymnastics, dance, engineering, yoga and Judaica. They also provide weekly themed summer camp, including science exploration, wildlife week, artistic fun, and more. Parents can add swim lessons utilizing the school’s kid-friendly, three-feetdeep heated pool.

Developing a child’s self-confidence, self-image, and independence while helping them play, share, and communicate with other children in a positive way is The Boulevard School’s overall goal. The staff also incorporates ethics and core values into their programs.

Each teacher takes a few minutes daily to discuss such important principles as good manners, respect, honesty, and responsibility with the children. Parents can also help by taking time at home each night to discuss the questions of the day.

Shirley credits the school’s success to the love, care, and commitment that comes with a family business. For Shirley, it has always been a labor of love as she calls it “a happy place.” Shirley directed The Boulevard School for over 20 years before stepping aside. She then turned over the day-to-day management to her three children while continuing to have a hand in the business. Her son Brahm has been the school administrator since 1985, coordinating the extracurricular program, managing the back office, IT, and billing. Her youngest son, Stewart, manages the financial end of the business with Eric, Shirley’s husband. Shirley’s daughter, Rodi, worked at the school while she was in high school and during college vacations.

She returned after graduate school to develop the Mommy/Daddy and Me program while raising her own four children. Rodi became co-director with Shirley in 1998 and is now the director in charge.

It isn’t always easy to diagnose a child with learning disabilities. Some signs to look for include difficulty in focusing. Note that difficulty in focusing might not be ADHD. It could also be from dyslexia or other LDs that make it impossible for the child to process the information. Another sign to look for is

The free concert was the third concert in the 2017 Sun Sets Concert Series at Calabasas Lake, co-sponsored with the Calabasas Park Homeowners Association.

The concerts are held on the Calabasas Lake Greenbelt, adjacent to the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center, where guests enjoy plenty of fixed seating and field seating on grass, bringing their own lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets.

Part of the fun also includes plenty of shaved iced for the kids and plenty of room for friendly dogs. The Stars of Beatlemania is THE Beatles-music super group, starring two original Beatlemania alumni favorites.

Through all the psychedelic paint choices, confetti tile, and beaded curtains that had done me the favor of keeping this house on the market, I could see its amazing architectural bones and the self-contained setting that had so far been elusive in our search. Yes, there was work to be done, but I had found the perfect canvas to create a noble space. The renovations began immediately, and soon, the stately elegance of the place began to emerge. The layout wound up working perfectly for us, with an abundance of space to host family and friends in large gatherings and a casita to house my design studio. There was even a perfect spot for the walled rose garden and chicken coop I had been longing for. The property and its gardens inspire my work and serve our family so beautifully, which is the ultimate goal for any home.

Sure enough, that September The Bachelor rolled in as advertised. Our two homes share one driveway behind a common set of unassuming gates in the Santa Monica Mountains, but the properties sit on about ten acres each, so there is enough distance between us for the privacy we wanted. Still, it’s hard to miss what’s going on next door when it’s literally happening in the driveway. There have been all kinds of interesting arrivals in the six years we’ve lived here: exploding cars, a procession of covered wagons, live camels, cowboys on horseback, fire trucks, helicopters, and most recently, a 40-piece marching band!

When filming begins, security is posted at every gate and the limos begin filing in. The festivities and filming can go on until dawn on many of these nights.

It all sounds like it would be terribly inconvenient and embody the antithesis of what I thought I had been looking for, but as it turns out, the production’s impact to daily life is minimal. The crew has it down to a science and they are beyond considerate, so we rarely feel bothered. I never expected to love living and working next door to such a rambunctious site, but their presence infuses a vitality to our location. We have a great relationship with our buddies next door, and the added security around the property that they provide is a wonderful additional perk.

I often think about those opening shots of “The Bach,” before I knew where those hills in L.A. were, and I get lost in the irony. I searched high and low for the perfect private and quiet location, and I found it next door to a house that appears weekly on televisions all over the world. It’s actually a wonderful life lesson about focusing less on finding the perfect space and more on how to make your space perfect for you. Ultimately, we are head over heels for our home and offices, so I guess you could say that the contestants are not the only ones who have found love on the set of The Bachelor!

Cars and Cigars, July Edition was a huge success. Partnering with Lavaggio-the art of auto detailing and Lamborghini North Los Angeles, it was a standing room only event. Exotic cars owners came from all over California to hang out and share their passion of the automobile.

The drive was incredible. Touring the Santa Monica Mountains with all those cars, it was perfection. The roads were empty and the casual drive made for a great time. A line of the world’s most exotic cars on Mulholland, breathtaking. Exotic cars were everywhere. Lamborghini North Los Angeles had brought over limited edition vehicles to display and to offer test rides for the exotic car owners. Many had never driven a Lamborghini, let’s just say that it got many exotic car owners thinking of buying a new Lamborghini or trading in the car they drove, for a new Lamborghini. The Lavaggio Team did an incredible job. Creating the ambience, the catering by Bellini Bistro and the guest services were on par with any five star hotel.

ANNUAL PAGEANT 360 EMPOWERS YOUNG WOMEN Agoura Hills hosted the third annual Pageant 360, an opportunity for young women ages 13 to 17 to demonstrate talents and attributes which focus on individual beauty rather than those set by traditional beauty pageant standards. On July 29, the public was invited to help support participants and enjoy the program featuring group and individual performances followed by a reception. Carly Hartman founded Pageant 360 under the Hartman House, a charitable family organization founded by her parents, Julieann and Butch Hartman. Butch is the creator of Nickelodeon’s Fairly Odd Parents. Her goal is to encourage women across the world to believe in themselves, achieve their goals, and overcome old perceptions of being female.

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Operation Confidence, an organization that provides wraparound services to individuals with a disability began hosting community outreach events throughout the City of Los Angeles to bring awareness about the urgent need to get our American disabled heroes off the streets. On July 30, at the Knollwood Country Club, “A Tribute to Our Veterans” gala took place. All proceeds from the tribute event went toward Operation Confidence’s Turning Point House Project, to purchase and refurbish a low-cost house for homeless disabled veterans.

Veterans will live in the home where they will receive nutrition, assistance with mental health and substance abuse issues, adaptive equipment, and other related services to help them become a productive member of society and live independently once again.

The 2017 Porsche Panamera is the second generation of the four-door 911-inspired sedan. What many purists initially thought would be a bad move by Porsche ended up being a huge success for the brand. Extending the line and making a fourdoor available to enthusiasts who need a little more room for business associates or family members not only extended the segment buying Porsches but invited in a whole new segment.

For 2017, the top of the line is the Panamera Turbo S. The 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 produces up to 570 horsepower and 567 lb-ft of torque. It gets moving fast — zero to sixty in 3.3 seconds and an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic with manual-shifting mode.
