can’t believe summer is over and fall is here. With fall comes the changing of the leaves and cozy fires. It’s also the time when the kids go back to school. Hence, we bring you our Education, Enrichment and Empowerment section, with coverage of the best schools, classes and programs to help you plan ahead for years to come.

It is an honor to have the Roub family on the cover of this issue — they are a strong family that fought against cancer and won. Lisa Roub graciously shares her story and appreciation for all the support she received from the community. We also have the pleasure of featuring Vantage Oncology in an editorial offering insight into how they treat their patients, along with a piece on the Jennifer Diamond Foundation’s unique way of treating the emotional side of cancer.

How the Roub family fought cancer and won

I

magine waking up one day to the news that you have breast cancer. You are in peak physical condition. You have always been a nutrition-conscious eater, with no bad health habits to speak of. What would you do? How would you react? At 40 years of age, that is exactly what happened to Lisa Roub. A little over a year later, she is here with her supportive family to tell her courageous story.

Naturally, this news flipped the Roub family’s world upside down.

Time spent enjoying her family turned into an endless cavalcade of doctors and specialists. Trips to Europe and sporting events turned into trips to the doctor’s office trying to plan a course of action. After initially finding the small lump in her breast, she had a mammogram and ultrasound, both of which came back clear. She was told that the lump was nothing to worry about. Seven months later, the lump was still there, so she went back to get another opinion. For a second time, she was assured that the lump was nothing to worry about, but she had it removed for peace of mind. Sure enough, it was cancer. “I was told that the cancer was caught early and that mastectomy and chemo would not be necessary.” After much “learning, researching and soul-searching,” Lisa came to the very audacious conclusion that she wanted to have a bilateral

mastectomy anyway. She was dealing with a very real hell that she knew she never wanted to deal with again.

After having the double mastectomy, she was informed that she had a second cancer in her breast and one just forming in her other breast.

Clearly, Lisa’s intuition saved her from a whole other world of tribulations.

After her mastectomy, the Roub family was dealt, yet again, a very heavy hand. The cancer had spread to Lisa’s lymph nodes. Because of this, Lisa had to begin the grueling, tolling process of chemotherapy.

She bravely accepted the news with grace and hope, “This, again, was a devastating blow, but I knew I would stop at nothing to get rid of this and reclaim my plan for living a long and happy life.”

A far more tormenting thought than the loss of both breasts was the fear of losing her hair to chemotherapy. Luckily, she found a wonderful way to prevent full hair loss during this taxing undertaking.

Penguin Cold Caps freeze your scalp to 40 degrees below zero on chemo days. Although this counteracted the potential damage to her scalp and hair, the process of chemotherapy and the Penguin Cold Caps left Lisa unable to style or wash her hair with anything other than icy cold water. “Hats became my new best friend, and I had to hide under them for seven months.”

Eight months later, Lisa emerged from her journey a much stronger and wiser woman. As she puts it so succinctly, “I fought like a girl and won.” She gained an incredible amount of support and therapeutic sharing through social media sites. Not only was she immediately lifted up and supported by her friends and community, but she has also been able to reach an incredible amount of people with whom she is able to instill hope for the future. “The wonderful thing about terrible times is that you get to see the most beautiful qualities in the people that surround you. It’s always about the silver linings, and I found them every day.”

Even though the worst part of Lisa’s nightmare is over, four surgeries and four rounds of chemo, she now faces five to 10 years of hormone therapy to lower her chances of recurrence. Lisa wants to urge all women to “know their own bodies, pay attention to any Michael grew up in Ohio and then Florida before meeting Lisa while at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a healthcare executive who co-founded Samia Solutions in 2010. Samia Solutions focuses on delivering in-office ancillary programs to physician practices throughout the U.S. Prior to forming Samia Solutions, Michael served in executive capacities with US HealthWorks and Specialty Surgical Center after working as an investment banker with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Michael received a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania as well as an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He loves to travel and plan exciting trips for his family.

Both Michael and Lisa are very involved in their children’s lives.

16-year-old Jacob has played many sports including basketball, baseball, and soccer, and currently plays on the varsity lacrosse team at Agoura High School. Michael is always there to cheer his son to victory. 13-year-old Mia has participated in Girl Scouts, soccer and gymnastics for years. She finally settled on a serious dance program at the age of 10. She has been dancing with Revelations Dance Company at Talent Lab Dance and Aerial Arts Studio in Westlake Village for the past four years.

In addition to the Roub family’s busy schedule, they all find time to give back to the community. Between Michael running marathons, Jacob teaching youth lacrosse, Mia volunteering to teach dance classes for special needs children and Lisa raising awareness for cancer and making healthy choices, this is one family that understands the importance of community. changes, don’t wait and don’t take no for an answer when you feel like something isn’t right. You have to be your own advocate.” She stresses the importance of an annual mammogram and monthly self-exams. “One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime...but if caught early, the battle can be won.

Early detection is the key.”

Of course, Lisa’s family members were her biggest supporters in her darkest times. The rest of the Roub family consists of husband Michael and their two children, Jacob and Mia. In November of 2002, the Roub family moved to the beautiful Mira Monte development of Calabasas. There were many factors that influenced their move to Calabasas, including the wonderful Las Virgenes School District, the close-knit community, the beautiful surrounding hills, the proximity to the beach and the clean air.

Garden Gala

MONA FOUNDATION

AND CONCERT

The Friends of Mona Foundation in Calabasas and Agoura Hills were happy to host their first annual Garden Gala and Concert — “Transforming Lives Through Education” — at the home of Tammy and David Wood on June 28. An elegant summer evening of music with Grammy-award-winning performers and fine refreshments were enjoyed al fresco, amidst roses and majestic views on the lawns adjacent to the home where “The Bachelor” is filmed in the mountains above Malibu. The evening also included a silent auction featuring home furnishings and accessories curated by the design firm Interior Archaeology. Founder and President of the Mona Foundation, Mahnaz Javid, was joined by actor, writer and Mona Foundation board member Rainn Wilson who acted as master of ceremonies. One hundred percent of the evening’s proceeds went to the support of Mona Foundation and the 13 educational projects supported by its efforts. Mona Foundation supports grassroots educational initiatives around the world which emphasize service to the community and increased opportunity for women and girls.

id-September 2015 marks the grand opening of The Village at Westfield Topanga. This new development in the San Fernando Valley offers over 550,000 square feet of the best shopping, dining, events, entertainment and leisure for locals and visitors alike. Upon opening, The Village, combined with world-class Westfield Topanga and adjacent Westfield Promenade, will be home to over 300 tenants, emerging as one of the top retail districts in the U.S. The Village further breaks the mold with the introduction of a state-of-the-art Costco and brand new trollies to transport shoppers.

The Village at Westfield Topanga has attracted many of L.A.’s hot street retail, restaurants, home furnishings, personal services and notable celebrity concepts, including Fabletics athletic apparel, co-founded by actress Kate Hudson; Fred Levine’s M.Fredric; and celebrity florist Amy Marella’s Fleurish Flower Bar. They will join Topanga’s retail powerhouses Apple, Zara, Brandy Melville and H&M. Other lifestyle retailers that will be opening include REI, Varga, Athleta, Rain Created For Living, and J.D. Luxe.

The Village also provides a destination for home furnishing retailers to conveniently serve the San Fernando Valley. Sur La Table, Z Gallerie, Jonathan Adler and Basset Home Furnishings will join Crate & Barrel for the ultimate location for home goods.

Also opening is a new Burke Williams Day Spa. The grand opening marks the tenth location to the family of California day spas and promises to be the most innovative spa concept that the brand has introduced to date. “The new spa is going to present multiple advanced amenities that will be unique to any other Burke Williams location and offer guests the ultimate sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation,” commented Burke Williams Founder Bill Armour. The new spa at The Village at Westfield Topanga will be reminiscent of a Hamptons beach house, with 14 massage rooms, six skin care rooms, one room that accommodates both massage and skin care services, a nail care room and two lounges.

To bring unique art and music events to The Village, Westfield has partnered with radio station 88.5 KCSN who will have a studio located on property, local muralist Elkpen, and UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture. The Village’s design integrates native plant life and water elements of the San Fernando Valley before the region was developed and urbanized. The Bridal Premiere show took place on Aug. 9 at the Hyatt Hotel in Westlake Village. Featuring over 80 bridal-related exhibitors who presented fashions, food tastings, music and venues, the Premiere gave lucky-brides-to-be a chance to meet wedding professionals ready to assist with all aspects of wedding planning, and enjoy fashions that featured the latest in wedding attire. The day was filled with guests strolling the aisles; sampling tasty treats from caterers and bakeries, taking pictures at the photo booth, and registering for thousands of dollars in door prizes. A few lucky winners took home a $500 Gift Card toward the product or service of any of the January bridal exhibitors. Other exciting prizes were provided by Hyatt Westlake, Sheraton Agoura Hills, Homewood Suites, Joey Carman Photography, Buca di Beppo, Milano’s Italian Restaurant, Café Firenze’, and Nothing Bundt Cakes. Single Chins Are In!

New injectable Kybella™ reduces chin fat

eople who are frustrated by their “double chins” have spent their whole life trying to position their heads correctly when there is a camera around. Somehow, at their happiest moments, their little extra chin peeps out from underneath and sabotages the photographic memory. The solutions for a double chin up until now have been liposuction and surgical lift. A good many individuals, though irritated by their tablespoon or more of offensive fat, are not irritated enough to opt for an invasive procedure. Men, especially, who have had no other cosmetic concerns are showing a strong interest in a noninvasive way of reducing what we call submental fullness. Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is a noninvasive injectable just recently FDA approved for the reduction of fat under the chin, or “double chin.”

Double chin, per se, is not an aging problem but is instead related to genetics. Fit, youthful people will find this familial feature apparent early on. If this tendency exists, then over time, the body stores additional fat in the area, resulting in a more prominent problem. It is easiest to address the fullness when it is relatively small, since there are a finite number of fat cells — they are simply expansive. Having said that, the submental fat can be reduced at any age using Kybella, with little risk of residual loose skin.

The Kybella injection, also known as ATX101, is an FDA-approved injectable that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness due to fat. It is a liquid that opens and damages fat cells in a controlled way. It is a synthetic version of a bile salt that our body naturally produces and uses to break down dietary fat.

With each set of injections, there is reduction in the fat cells, and the reduction that is achieved is permanent.

From the Bottom Up: Flooring Tips to Get the Designer LookYou Crave

W

hen it comes to selecting flooring for a project, I always ask myself the same question: What material offers the most authentic look in the space I’m creating and has the performance necessary for the location? Flooring is the very foundation of a space, and most often, it is the first place I start on a project. I work in all styles of architecture -- from traditional to modern -- and I often find ways to bridge the two. There is an exception to every rule, but I almost never use the

floor as that bridge. As much as I love modern, clean elements, I usually opt for flooring that has organic qualities which can stand the test of time and forgive the punishments of wear. I save modern touches for elements that can be easily swapped out down the line – like accessories and furniture – when modern is no longer reading as modern.

Authenticity is the name of the game when it comes to your material choices.

I love to use quarter-sawn or live-cut oak boards, limestone, terracotta, brick, marble, mosaics and custom concrete pav-

ers. I always try to use the real thing or the best quality available within a category, and I never miss out on the opportunity to invite an organic layer to a room, even in some of my most modern projects. The natural slub in a piece of linen, a gnarled knot in an oak floor board, the nubby nature of a knitted mohair throw or the natural graining of leather all impart character and are wonderful foils to modern counterparts. This has a grounding effect on a space and gives it a sense of timelessness. If budget and conditions allow, I always opt for true ¾-inch-thick limestone pavers over limestone tile. The difference in the look is one of those subtleties that gives a space true distinction.

Break flooring types as infrequently as possible and, when you must, try to do so only where there is a break in plane – a step up or step down. This makes a space feel larger and more important and makes the transitions feel natural. It also makes for easier maintenance. I try to select flooring material that acknowledges the utility of a room. In kitchens, mudrooms and wet spaces, I try to use stone, terracotta or something that can be scrubbed down. Often there are no natural places to transition from wood flooring to stone, but when I can make the change, I do.

Pay attention to your finishes! There are certain processes and products I always use to achieve the beautiful patinas and wearability I crave, whether I’m refinishing an existing floor or specifying new wood flooring. For example, when it comes to the stain on a wood floor, I always make sure that the boards are “popped” with water first. This step is done right before the stain is applied to freshly sanded raw boards. The boards are wiped down with a layer of water to open the grain so that when the stain is applied quickly afterwards, the pores of the wood can absorb the color more thoroughly and evenly. When it comes to the final finish,

I have two favorite treatments. The first is an oil-based product with a satin finish. An oil-based product penetrates the pores of the wood and becomes one with the boards in a way that a water-based or latex finish cannot. I always specify three coats, not the common two, as this results in a very hard protective coating which can last for decades and requires only a damp mop for cleaning. My second favorite finish on wood flooring (which can be done over any stain) is several coats of butcher’s wax, buffed out to allow the boards to glow with a nice, natural finish. This is a drier look that works well to achieve an informal feeling. In this case, floors can be recoated and buffed every three to five years to be refreshed, but they really never need to be refinished. I love to use this treatment when a project is near the beach or in the country -- perfect for our area. The look fits with an easier lifestyle, and because there is no layer of permanent finish to be cut or scratched by grit and sand, the finish never wears out; it simply ages to a wonderful patina.

Locate carpeting in key areas. As a rule, I like to use hard-surfaced flooring just about everywhere, with softness and pattern provided by wonderful area rugs. But in secondary bedrooms and sometimes even the master, I still love a great wallto-wall carpet, especially if it’s 100-percent wool. On wood stairs and in upper hallways, I often select a super resilient, neutral wool carpet that is custom serged or bound at the edges and installed with a 6-inch perimeter of wood left showing.

This keeps stairs safe and comfortable and makes the second floor feel finished.

And I can’t believe I still have to say this -never, under any circumstances, put wallto-wall carpeting in bathrooms.

Flooring sets the tone and helps create the energy a space radiates. It should allow you to feel free to live on it, be beautiful, forgive wear and require the least amount of maintenance. It should last in both substance and style. One choice can enhance many iterations of furnishings and can endure for the lifetime of the home. Choose carefully!

rt is a universal language. It is a form of communication that bridges not only time, but space as well. Through a variety of mediums, the artist may instantly convey a thought or emotion to a viewer thousands of miles away without actually uttering a single word. An artist’s work is able to live on long past the artist’s time on this earth has ended.

At Westlake Village’s ABRA Gallery, they strive to help local and international artists alike to solidify their own legacies. ABRA, a beautiful 2000-square-foot showroom, is both a working studio and permanent gallery for famed artist Hessam Abrishami. The gallery opened to the public in 2011 and features not only the works of Hessam Abrishami, but also bi-monthly exhibitions of selected artists from around the world.

ABRA Gallery appeals to both art collectors as well as art observers. The gallery is managed by Hessam’s son, Kaveh Abrishami, who states, “Our desire is to create an environment that allows an everyday admirer to become a lifetime collector of fine art.” Kaveh learned both his appreciation for art and the inner workings of the art industry at an early age, observing as his father became an accomplished and international artist who is known and respected throughout the world.

Artist Hessam Abrishami was born in Shiraz, Iran, in 1951. Influenced by the oppression he felt in his home country, Hessam left Iran and made his way to Italy where he was formally trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti Pietro Vannucci. There, he studied style and technique and produced a painting and sculpting talent that is strong in foundation and fun-

damentals. Yet, his personal feelings and impressions are the core emotions expressed through his work today.

Upon moving to the U.S., Hessam remembered the sting of oppression witnessed in his home country. Despite the persecution and repression of his Iranian upbringing, Hessam chose to embrace the goodness and beauty in all people, which is evident in his work. His work reflects the resilience of his real-life experiences and celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit and the relationships that make us who we are.

Hessam also believes that art is not confined to canvas and paint, which is why he has embraced other local artists who work in other mediums. One testament to this was seen in July at the ABRA gallery exhibition entitled “Elements” — an exhibit of internationally acclaimed artists and their artwork on canvas, wood, copper and other metals.

This event featured the works of Taraneh Mozafarian, a Persian artist who works mostly with metal and glass. Taraneh views her art as gems. In using metal, mostly copper, Taraneh finds that her art becomes unpredictable and full of surprises. She allows the piece to guide her and so, in a way, allows the art to happen to her. The copper becomes alive with its own evolved intelligence. The final piece is a breathtaking synthesis of the innate qualities of the medium and the overall emotive style of the artist.

Another ABRA featured artist using unconventional mediums is Alistair Stevenson, a selftaught furniture maker/designer from Scotland, who showcased his wood sculptures created from tree trunks and roots that were destroyed in California wildfires. His furniture designs and wood sculptures are inspired by nature using an organic manner based on the form of the wood, allowing his inner artistic process to guide the way.

At ABRA Gallery, art lovers and observers are always welcome and visitors overwhelmingly impressed and inspired. When asked about the pain of separation involved in parting with a piece, Hessam had this to say: “I have enjoyed making it, and now, I want it to bring happiness to someone else.” His belief is that art does not belong solely to the artist that created it, but to the people. Hessam’s greatest desire is that his art will help to make the world a free and joyful place. n

Cancer Foundation Inspiring Hope in Local Cancer Patients

hen patients, caretakers, family and visitors walk into the lobby of the Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation, they are greeted with an open, airy space and the sound of birds. On one hall hangs a lovely quilt made by eight of the participants in the foundation’s Needle Arts program, where patients and caregivers gather in an old school quilting bee, sharing their experiences and tips.

Art is at the core of the Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation, along with education, community and hope.

Art was an important part of Jennifer Diamond’s life. A talented and accomplished artist, Jennifer applied her talent to animation, graphic design and website projects and provided art classes to young people.

Diagnosed with appendiceal carcinoma, a rare form of cancer, Jennifer passed away on the evening of July 23, 2002. During the last days of her life, she helped found the Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation. A stunning portrait of Jennifer hangs in the lobby, watching over the many patients in the San Fernando Valley that the foundation serves.

Today, the foundation is run by Jennifer’s father, Harvey, who serves as president; her mother Alice, who is secretary and CFO; and her brother, Matthew, who is vice president. Her family also cofounded the foundation.

Jennifer’s Uncle Neil Diamond is very proud of the good work the foundation is doing. “For families and patients dealing with cancer, we try to normalize life, providing a space to make friendships and for support,” says Alice. The

foundation offers support groups by appointment for patients and spouses. Families and caregivers are also welcome. The space includes several inviting rooms with facilities for touch therapy and a kitchen where healthy cooking classes are held.

Many of the participants at the Jennifer Diamond Foundation are referred by Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills, West Hills Hospital, radiation centers and oncologists and through word of mouth.

During the week, participants engage in classes including Tai Chi, Gentle and Restorative Yoga, Gentle Pilates, Relaxation and Guided Imagery and Qigong. Patients can receive one massage per month by a masseuse who specializes in cancer patients. Socializing provides additional support. Many participate in a weekly line dancing program. Quiet times are also important to the healing process. The facility has a quiet room for patients who want to reflect or just take a nap.

Many studies indicate that creativity enhances the healing process. The Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation provides patients and their families with many opportunities to engage in creative exploration, including a monthly jewelry making class, watercolor painting, creative writing, art and quilting. Patients may purchase supplies in the facility’s mini-store, a convenience offered to lessen stress, or they can bring supplies from home. The art room is sometimes filled with patients preparing collages to express with imagery how they feel.

The dragonfly icon representing the Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation is a symbol that appeared in the family’s life during Jennifer’s struggles and beyond. Harvey shares that one day, after a day of chemotherapy, Jennifer noticed a dragonfly perched on the car antenna. She gently placed the dragonfly on her finger, explaining to her parents that in some cultures, the dragonfly is a sign of good health and also a messenger. “We were all excited,” he says.

In addition to providing support and classes, the Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation has built a network of eight cancer information libraries throughout California, like at the Norris Cancer Hospital at USC, Disney Cancer Center and the Hearst Cancer Center in San Luis Obispo.

Harvey Diamond remembers, “During Jennifer’s 16-hour appendix surgery in San Diego, I attempted to visit the medical library to get information on what we were dealing with but was told the library was reserved for doctors and medical staff.” Harvey, frustrated, went to the pharmacy and came back dressed in a nice shirt with a stethoscope slung over his shoulder. Believing he was a doctor, the librarian allowed him to come in.

“We can’t just allow this to happen. It’s vital that we have a resource area for patients and family members. When I came back to L.A., I was doing research as a parent, devoted to learning,” says Harvey.

When Jennifer passed away, he focused on helping others with the knowledge he had gained. Before technology and software, one way to help was to develop a library system, so Harvey and the foundation dedicated themselves to raising funds and donations to create the network of libraries. These libraries have since helped thousands of people with cancer to make informed decisions about their healthcare and have given them the tools they need to become their own advocates throughout their battles with cancer.

A favorite weekend social and shopping spot for many years, the Calabasas farmers market is in Old Town, Calabasas, on Calabasas Road just west of El Canon Avenue, across the street from the Sagebrush Cantina. The Calabasas Farmers Market features an assortment of vendors with fresh produce and a variety of foods. The Market now sells wine as well as a great selection of flowers. Special Olympics

COMES TO Calabasas

The City of Calabasas was proud to host the delegation from Great Britain as a Special Olympics World Games Host Town. Festivities began with a number of Flame of Hope Ceremony events throughout Southern California to honor the 7,000+ athletes from 177 countries. A ceremony welcoming the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg took place in front of the Calabasas Civic Center with Calabasas Mayor Lucy Martin, State Senator Fran Pavley, Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff’s Station Captain Pat Davoren and others greeting the torch runners. The Great Britain delegation also enjoyed a number of events during their stay, including a tour through Leonis Adobe Museum and an old-fashioned hoedown at King Gillete Ranch, giving these inspiring athletes the opportunity to bond with the community of Calabasas during their Special Olympics Host Town visit.

Spotlight: Local Film Students

THAT’S A WRAP DANIEL GLASSMAN Daniel Glassman, a young man from the San Fernando Valley, has been making films for eight years. He has learned much of what he knows about film from his brother Ben. The brothers make a fantastic production team. Their short film “Less” was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, Arizona International Film Festival and Topanga Film Festival. When asked about his films, Daniel says, “My goal, above anything else, is to convey the idea that people make decisions and do things both horrible and wonderful, sometimes without explanation. People are strange like that, and that reality can be really scary.

But it makes us human.” Being from the Valley has very much influenced his work. It has infused his films with themes of suburbia, consumerism and urbanization. Daniel works on projects he is passionate about, and it definitely shows in his productions.

BEN TAN Ben Tan, a young filmmaker and recent graduate of El Camino High School, recently had his short film screened at the Short Film Corner of the Cannes Film Festival. “It was definitely a life changing experience for me going to such a prestigious film festival as a 19-year-old.” With a father in the business, Ben had filmmaking in his eyes from a young age. It wasn’t until three years ago, however, that he truly became passionate about the art. Of his future in the industry, he says, “I love film so much, but I also understand it is a business, and I see myself eventually becoming a producer.” Currently, Ben is exploring the production of music videos.

Spotlight: Local Film Students

THAT’S A WRAP EMILY KRAMER Calabasas High School graduate Emily Kramer is going into her sophomore year at Emerson College in Boston studying film production. Starting out as an actress “bit by the acting bug” at as young as 2-years-old, Emily acted until her junior year of high school, until she finally realized that she felt most at home behind the camera. “I love the way film captures the human experience.

It can connect with people in such an incredible way. A film can be like a best friend: It can connect with you and make you feel less alone; it can make you laugh and escape the stress of daily life.” Watch out for Emily and fellow featured filmmaker Theo Buckwald’s short “Old Tricks,” an official selection for the Woodstock Film Festival coming in October. When asked about her audiences, Kramer says, “I want them to feel like they understand some aspect of their own life, the human experience or the world after seeing my film.”

THEO BUCKWALD For Calabasas High School alumnus filmmaker Theo Buckwald, being in the audience is one of the most rewarding things about being a filmmaker. Theo comes from a film industry family, “but my high school film class at Calabasas and working with talented young artists have completely provided me with what I need to know. I find so many lessons in places where you would have never believed.” Theo and partner Emily Kramer have a short called “Old Tricks” that has over 70,000 views on Vimeo. “It was also an awesome experience working with Emmy-award-winning Joe Spano as the lead actor.” Theo tends to gravitate towards experimental films and comedies.

Theo wants people to realize that “you are all the character.” Through signature sounds and unexpected violence, Theo’s films remind his audience that life is all about making mistakes. He also urges young filmmakers to “get up, write a script and pick up a camera.”

Spotlight: Local Film Students

THAT’S A WRAP KERI BOWERS AND TAYLOR CROSS Keri Bowers’ son Taylor is autistic. He is also an award-winning filmmaker. Taylor and Keri have been making films together since his 15th birthday. That was the year he decided that he wanted to make a film to raise money to buy holiday gifts for less fortunate families. Keri says, “I believe that when we put out energy in the world, good or bad, we often find exactly what we are looking for.” And opportunities they found. Keri and Taylor’s film “Normal People Scare Me” is a film about people affected by autism, made by a teen with autism.

Naturally, the film went on to win many awards and garnered international attention. Keri remembers the determination Taylor had when working on his film.

“I told you so, Mom,” he said. I told you I could sell my films.” Now, 10 years later, he says that “Normal People Scare Me Too” is in production, set to be completed in early 2016.

NOAH KENTIS Noah Kentis spent two years in the Careers in Entertainment Academy (CEA) program of El Camino Real Charter High School. Now, his film “Delirium” is winning awards at the L.A. Student Media Film Festival and being admitted to the Cannes Film Festival. “[CEA] is an incredible film program and has taught me a lot,” says Noah. “I also feel that a lot of what I have learned comes from hands-on experience.” Even today, Noah continues to work with the young filmmakers he met while attending CEA. “I tend to work with the same people. We all work extremely well together.” He primarily enjoys making films that evoke emotion in his audience, namely horror and comedy. He says intuitively, “There is power in everything.”

The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools crossed the million dollar mark with the generosity of parents, businesses and residents of our community.

In August, The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools presented the Las Virgenes Unified School District with a check that increased their total donation to over a million dollars in four short years. The money is raised through an annual appeal as well as fundraisers such as The Event, which is held in June, and The Carnival, which welcomes students and families back to school in September.

The Foundation’s focus has always been on supporting classroom teachers and counselors. The funds donated help lower class sizes and expand counseling programs. Superintendent Dr. Dan Stepenosky says, “The Foundation has done a phenomenal job of uniting our community in support of our schools. Our K–3 studentto-teacher ratio is among the lowest in the region, and for the first time in a decade, our two high schools will have dedicated college and career counselors to help students prepare for their next life stage.”

Deanna Glassberg, president of The Foundation, articulated the group’s mission by stating, “The Foundation’s goal is to help ensure that every child in every school has the opportunity and resources to reach their full potential. We are committed to providing our school district with the funds necessary to

ensure long-term success for our students and our community.”

The Foundation also believes that when our public schools are performing at their highest, the entire community benefits.

The Age-Old QUESTION

t’s a question that parents have struggled with since the beginning of time: “How do we engage our children and even ourselves enough to educate and learn?” The secret has always been to make the process painless and enjoyable.

Whether it involves learning a new language or helping your child with math homework, the goal is the same — learn, learn and learn. Fortunately, there are some great educational apps for the kids and some cool ways to learn for adults.

“Story Chaser” is a program that helps improve reading skills for both teens and adults. It engages you while you build your speed. It also allows you to compete with opponents and friends. Like many apps, this one is free and also child friendly.

Are you a budding writer? Check out “Book Creator” for iPad. This program gives you over 50 fonts and adds photos from your tablet or the internet. You can even add audio recordings. Once your book is finished, you can upload the files to the web. Can you imagine the joy of children seeing their own work of art in a book format that they can share with friends and family? Or if you’re hopeful, maybe even a company like Random House Publishing.

Your kid could be the next James Patterson or Stephen King!

Do you remember ”Mad Libs”? As a printed version, it was both silly and educational for decades. Well, now, like everything else, it’s gone digital. You are asked to fill in parts of a story without actually knowing the story. It allows you to use words that, when completed, make for a fun read. This also helps in learning proper grammar. The digital version comes equipped with 21 free stories.

For the little ones, take a look at “Elmo Loves 123s.” This is a math program that helps teach addition and subtraction. It has videos, puzzles and coloring pages. Who doesn’t want to play with Elmo and Abby Cadabby?

Remember “The Magic School Bus: Oceans” by Scholastic? This takes you on an aquatic journey that includes science facts, pictures, games and videos.

On the electronics side, the Alphaberry is a small electronic device that a toddler can use to learn letters by hearing them aloud. It runs around $23.

If your child can’t keep their hands off your iPad, look at VTech Inno Tab. It’s a tablet computer for kids ages 4 to 9 and comes with a 5-inch touchscreen. It includes an MP3 player and a video player. Unlike the iPad, which will set you back $500 to $800, this one only costs $79.

Education is not just for children. One of my favorite programs for children and adults alike is Rosetta Stone. If you ever wanted to learn a foreign language, this is one of the best on the market.

It’s not cheap but they offer 30 languages, and it immerses you in the language. You can install it on your computer or take their course online.

As for me, I get my education through the “Real Housewives” of Beverly Hills. Perhaps you are slightly higher on the educational food chain than I am. n See you on the radio!

Family Fun

AT UNIVERSITY VILLAGE THOUSAND OAKS

University Village Thousand Oaks celebrated its highly acclaimed family day on August 1. The family event featured caricature artists, balloon twisters, face painters, a photo booth, snow cones and a juggler to entertain families as they gathered lakeside to enjoy remote control toy boats in the Koi pond. Guests enjoyed the beauty of a few 1920 to 1931 Ford Model A cars by the entrance, thanks to Simi Valley Model A Car Club – a new feature of the event this year. Near the putting green, there was an exotic bird and parrot show, and near the gazebo, there was a “reptacular” petting zoo! DJ Luke played a variety of music styles, including standards, classics and modern country along with 50s and 60s rock ‘n’ roll. Adults were able to gamble in good fun at the casino in the clubhouse, while the youngest guests were able to enjoy the bounce house.

My mother is having a difficult time with side effects from her chemotherapy. What advice do you have to help her manage them?

Chemotherapy can cure cancer, prolong life or reduce symptoms, however, the side effects --including hair loss, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and infection -- can make patients more miserable than their cancer. These side effects occur because chemotherapy agents kill all rapidly growing cells in the body, not just the malignant ones. The philosophy for dealing with them is “prevent, minimize and manage.”

There is not much to do to prevent hair loss. Approximately 65 percent of chemotherapy courses cause hair loss. It usually begins one to three weeks after the first treatment, and hair generally begins to return three to 10 months after chemotherapy ends. There are “cooling caps” that may prevent hair loss if worn during treatment. They are most effective when chemotherapy is administered over short periods of time.

The most notorious side effect is nausea and vomiting. Prevention is critical because once vomiting starts, it is difficult to manage. There are excellent prescription medications that can be taken as prescribed to minimize the vomiting. Other strategies include consuming light, small meals throughout the day; avoiding sweet, fried or fatty foods; drinking small amounts of cool beverages; avoiding unpleasant odors that trigger nausea; wearing loose-fitting clothing; and using relaxation techniques to distract from the nausea. Eating foods that contain ginger or drinking flat ginger ale or ginger tea may also help.

To combat fatigue, try and stay as active as possible, especially between chemotherapy sessions, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water. To prevent infections, wash your hands frequently and try to avoid crowds. Make sure you get your flu shot and a pneumonia shot if needed.

There are many support groups available. The American Cancer Society and the Cancer Support Community have excellent referrals. Often, the best advice comes from other peoples’ personal experiences. The support groups can put you in touch with other survivors who have been through or are currently going through chemotherapy the same as your mother. n

Finance Lessons For Your Teens

he current economic stagnation environment has caused most everyone with children to rethink their personal spending and saving habits. Out of this, economic malaise may present an opportunity to instill the right financial habits in your teens that can carry them into adulthood.

Just as our parents and grandparents of the Great Depression era developed deeply ingrained attitudes about finances from their experience, our teens can share in the lessons of today’s “great recession” generation. The first step is to make your teen a partner with a stake in the family financial enterprise.

necessarily mean that what these kids have been enjoying will suddenly go away. Rather, it means that they need to become more accountable for their expenditures and begin to gain a sense of satisfaction from smart financial management. Having a participatory role in the family budget is an important step in development.

For most teens, it’s not about the money.

Not yet anyway. It’s more about what the money can get them – weekend entertainment, clothes, toys, cars. Money, no matter its source, is simply the means for what is important to them. If the family goes through a “financial change,” it may be an opportunity to turn these teen expenditures into teen motivators for learning about budgeting, savings, investing and smart financial management.

• Have teens develop a budget based on their priorities. Some teens are looking ahead to be able to buy a car or finance a trip. Their savings for future needs or wants should be a part of their budget. Both the expenditure side of their budget and the revenue side should be negotiated to the point where everyone signs off on it.

Teens have a stake in the family’s financial picture so it is important to communicate to them the family’s goals (especially as they relate to each teen), the current situation, what may have changed, why and each teens’ role in the new financial plan. It doesn’t

• Have teens set their own goals and priorities. It’s a good time to start them with a financial journal for budgeting and record keeping. Some teens might respond better with an App on their phone. Get them to distinguish between needs and wants and then prioritize.

• Have teens establish a relationship with a bank and meet the bank manager.

Have them set up ‘savings’ and ‘spending’ accounts. Have them contribute to a college savings account or a college 529 plan. (www.savingforcollege.com) • Have teens want to save. If they understand that their wants will need to be fi-

nanced, in part, from their savings, they will soon see the value in it. You can further encourage their savings habits by applying a “match” to their savings, much like an employer match to a 401(k) plan.

• Show teens how they can become wealthy on their own. Teens have aspirations and dreams just like adults and, given the moment, they will share them with you.

Show your teens how they can become a millionaire by the age of 40 by saving just $250 to $300 a month starting now.

Teens are adults in training and, given the opportunity, they will demonstrate increasing amounts of responsibility and a penchant for smart financial management. Certainly, they can be motivated by their own wants and needs, however, when they begin to see the vital role they play as part of the family financial picture, they may surprise you and exceed your expectations. n Copyright © Mark Wendell 2015.

e cannot walk into the gym for just a few days a year and expect to be in shape. Students cannot step into school without reviewing the material and expect to ace the test, nor can lawyers walk into a courtroom without preparing arguments and expect to wow the jury. Making a delicious dinner, decorating a house or raising children require forethought and preparation.

Why then should we walk into the Jewish High Holy Days and expect them to have meaning if we haven’t done the prep work?

Your Spiritual Homework

The Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur -- begins on September 13. Jewish families will gather for festive meals, services in synagogue and, traditionally after fasting on Yom Kippur, enjoy a break-the-fast meal. We hear the shofar (ram’s horn), which, like an alarm clock, calls us to wake from our slumber and to change our lives for the better. At its root, these days are about introspection, self-evaluation and change.

These days, Jews and Jewish families engage in a serious introspection to evaluate their lives. Using a time-tested process called teshuvah (from the Hebrew root shuv, “to turn”), we turn (and re-turn) to the people we should be. Too often, we fall off our path because we lose focus, we mess up relationships and forget about our dreams. We get lost.

Whether you are Jewish or part of a Jewish family or are open to some selfreflection, we invite you to participate in this process.

Your homework, if you choose to complete it, is to review your relationships and to begin the process of cleaning them up.

Consider how you can make things right. Words followed up with actions are needed.

Step 1: Count Your Blessings The Hebrew word “to bless” (l’varech) contains two words: lev (heart) and rach (softened). To bless someone, to feel blessed, you must soften your heart and feel the blessings within your life. Think about your family, work, love life, social life, community and spiritual/religious life. In what ways are you blessed? Make a list.

Step 2: Ask the Big Questions The Hebrew word chet (usually translated as “sin”) might be best understood as “missing the mark.” When an archer aims and shoots but the arrow misses the target, he refocuses and aims better. In our lives, we too must refocus. Ask yourself: How am I not living up to the image of whom I could be? How am I missing the mark?

Step 3: Do a Spiritual Self-Inventory We cannot transform our lives until we first clean up our messes.

Judaism teaches, “For the chet (harm) between a person and God, Yom Kippur atones. But for the chet (harm) between one person and another, Yom Kippur does not atone until the two people make peace with each another.” In the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, adherents do a penetrating selfinventory and ask forgiveness from those they have harmed.

Think about: Your relationships: Whom have I slighted? Whom have I not paid enough attention to? Have I really invested enough in my spouse, partner or lover?

Your workplace: Was I too harsh with my coworkers, employees or boss?

Your community: Did I share or spread gossip? Did I complain instead of helping? Am I engaged enough in Tikun Olam (fixing the world)?

Step 4: Teshuvah — Return to the Right Path Now, return to the right path by looking over your inventory and committing to approaching two people. Apologize sincerely; ask how you can fix the brokenness.

On Yom Kippur, review your lists and actions. Are you taking the necessary steps to transform your life? Point the new “you” toward the vision of whom you should be. A New Year filled with blessing can be yours if you begin by cleaning up your life.

he STACKED motto -- food well built -- becomes obvious the moment you walk into the restaurant.

STACKED offers America’s favorite foods – customizable burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, salads and mac ‘n’ cheese – as well as appetizers, desserts and a full bar.

STACKED is a full-service restaurant with an innovative ordering approach that enables you to control when you order and pay and customize your meals in a comfortable, uninhibited way. You do this by visually creating your meals on an iPad at your table.

The use of technology does not reduce the restaurant’s focus on hospitality. Paul Motenko, co-CEO, says, “Our philosophy is that guests should feel like they’ve received as much attention as at a full-service restaurant. And, of course, if a guest prefers that we take their order the traditional way, we are always glad to do so. We just want our guests to have a great dining experience, and we will do whatever we can to make that happen.”

Growing up in Chicago, Paul claims he developed his passion for the restaurant business while in college.

“I lived to eat and thought there would be nothing more exciting than opening a restaurant,” he says.

His first restaurant venture was with partner Jerry Hennessy as co-CEOs of BJ’s Restaurants. After retiring from BJ’s in 2009, Paul and Jerry wanted to create a concept with a simpler menu focused on America’s favorite foods, where guests could combine their favorite ingredients to create exactly what they wanted.

This led Paul and Jerry on their next venture, STACKED. Stacked focuses on five major menu categories: pizza, mac n’ cheese, salads, sandwiches and burgers. And each month, STACKED features a new signature item in each menu category.

Here’s how it works. You start by picking your basic item -- burger, salad or pizza, for example -- and then you choose your add-ins and toppings from a multitude of ingredients.

Included in the huge number of ingredient choices are 139 gluten-free items, offering gluten-sensitive guests literally thousands of combinations to choose from.

So, for example, if you’re having a burger or sandwich, you would first pick bread or a bun, like a pretzel bun. If you’re getting the burger, you’d then pick your type of patty, such as Angus beef.

Then, you’d choose cheese, like Swiss; lettuce, like green leaf; and a sauce, like STACKED sauce, a favorite. For toppings, you could pick avocado, Applewood smoked bacon and onions. Or you could choose from many other items, like pastrami and jalapeno bacon!

Freshly ground salmon, turkey and veggie burgers as well as chicken breast and pulled- pork sandwiches are also available.

You can also go with a classic steak salad, or, as they call it, “Cow in the Garden.”

With that, you could substitute a protein, like grilled salmon or Cajun shrimp, and add nuts, fruits and your favorite veggies.

Appetizers include habanero wings, STACKED nachos, spinach artichoke dip, pulled-pork sliders and homemade potato chips, all prepared to order.

If you get oven-baked mac ‘n’ cheese, you can add a twist with avocado and tomato and top it off with a fried egg. It’s pure mac ‘n’ cheese heaven!

Did anyone mention dessert? You better save room. Signature ice cream sandwiches, sundaes and shakes are featured, or you can create your own. Check out the signature mocha almond fudge shake, which has coffee, fudge and toasted almonds topped with whipped cream. Even though the signature shakes are perfection, you can choose mix-ins, like peanut butter cups, toasted almonds and marshmallows.

Paul suggests the signature peanut butter heaven ice cream sandwich or a cookie butter shake, his dessert favorites, which he usually has after one of his favorite meals, such as short rib mac ‘n’ cheese or pastrami on marbled rye.

he inaugural “Fantastic Fridays” was spectacular! What is “Fantastic Fridays”?

When you love cars as much as I do, you look for any reason to get together with those that share the same passion. I started asking others in the car community if they would be up for a once-a-month Friday night event, not dissimilar to the one at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank. The response was a unanimous “heck yes!”

The inaugural event was the “who’s who” in the collector car community. From manufacturers to car builders to heads of car clubs -like The Television Motion Picture Car Club and the Classic Chevy Club -- to shop owners and industry insiders, it truly had a special guest list!

The cars were spectacular. From twin-supercharged Cobras to full custom builds worth just short of a million dollars, the fifty or so cars could have been in any concours or car show in the world.

The best part of any event is the people, and at this event, we had some pretty passionate guests. Attendees drove their custom cars from as far as San Diego and Mojave to share in this special evening. As the cars rolled in, the aroma of race gas and the sound of finely tuned motors was music to the car lovers’ ears.

The guests, many of whom knew each other, were “blown away” by the quality of cars and the reception awaiting them.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

The 2015 Calabasas Pumpkin Festival is just around the corner.

A Calabasas legend since 1972, the festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Juan Bautista De Anza Park. The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce and the City of Calabasas proudly present two days of family fun and community celebration. Parking is free and shuttle service is available. This community celebration is complete with carnival games, an arts and crafts marketplace, a car show, contests, live entertainment, food, a beer and wine garden and, in keeping with the festival’s heritage, a pumpkin patch, pumpkin beer, pumpkin carver, pumpkin pie eating contest, pumpkin painting and plenty of gourmet pumpkin eats!

The Calabasas Chamber has various levels of sponsorships that allow businesses both large and small to participate in their own unique way and receive valuable exposure to thousands of patrons at the festival. An estimated 20,000 children and adults from every part of Los Angeles County, Orange County and Ventura County will join with local businesses, vendors and residential communities to enjoy the weekend. ollector and classic cars have never been hotter. What used to be reserved for Sunday morning cruises and “the retired guys,” has turned into a global phenomenon and is one of the fastest-growing automotive segments.

Investments? Your mom or dad probably told you that a car is not an investment. Well, they were right and they were wrong. Classic, exotic and custom cars of certain vintage, provenance and historical importance have turned the corner and now are considered to be a great investment. A Shelby Cobra that was $10,000 in the late 1970s could be worth in excess of hundreds of thousands of dollars. A Plymouth Superbird or a vintage Ferrari could be well into the millions of dollars. Often, options and rarity are defining factors in demand and price.

At Supercar Sunday, it is not uncommon to see some of the rarest, hottest and most desirable cars on the planet. Many people think that only exotics bring “all the money,” but they are mistaken. That classic muscle car or hot rod may be worth a million-plus dollars. And for certain collector cars that turn up, well, let us just say that we are talking tens of millions of dollars. We call it Supercar Sunday for a reason. n

From July 17 through 19, Calabasas High School’s Summer Theater Program impressed audiences with its performance of Disney’s “High School Musical.” With over 1,000 people in attendance, the show was a big success and allowed students in the community at large to participate in the thriving arts program. “High School Musical” is a stage adaption of the hit Disney film of the same name. The original producers and writers wanted to make a musical about life in high school, setting it in contemporary times but pulling from classic teenage musicals like “West Side Story” and “Grease.” The student actors, crew and pit band did an outstanding job bringing the show from the screen to the stage!

Special Olympics: Woodland Hills, Reseda, and Tarzana Communities across Southern California are eady to welcome 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from around the globe for three days of hospitality and cultural experiences before the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics. The Host Town program has been an important element of Special Olympics World Games since 1995. Woodland Hills, Reseda, and Tarzana proudly served as the shared Host Towns for Greece. The Special Olympics, a global leader representing people with intellectual disabilities, held the world’s largest sports and humanitarian event in the international capital for media and entertainment in 2015. The Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of individuals with intellectual disabilities, while forming a new global vision of acceptance. Held every two years and alternating between Summer Games and Winter Games, the Special Olympics World Games is a descendant of the July 1968 event organized by Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver to foster opportunities for acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities.
