“Ten years is only the beginning.” — Unknown Happy 10-year anniversary to us! Ten years ago, I started Calabasas Style magazine because I felt there was a need for a local lifestyle magazine, seeing as there wasn’t one at the time. So, I brought my creative style and spin, sense of humor, and interests to share with all of you. The community was so welcoming and open to us, and we forever appreciate everyone sharing their lives with us.

The first person to join our team was the talented Marvin Steindler, who expertly photographs all our covers. Our creative director and graphic artist, Elissa Linick, and I met soon thereafter, and she has been designing our fabulous layouts ever since. Linda Perry, or “Miss Calabasas,” as she is known here, was a great addition as our marketing/advertising director. She is loved by all who know her. Kaylie Carafelli, our editorial assistant and account coordinator, keeps us all on track and is a godsend. Karen Shaver, our bookkeeper, has the most positive energy. Lori Berezin, our main writer, is a magical wordsmith. Debbie Vaccarello and Melissa Westervelt, our event photographers, add their artistic touch to each photo shoot, and Nicole Schubert, our copy editor, keeps us on top of our game. We have a great team, and we all feel so lucky to do what we do!

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS VENTURA COUNTY GOLF CLASSIC

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC), the youth-mentoring organization which facilitates more than 1,500 one-to-one relationships annually, hosted its annual Golf Classic on October 11th at Moorpark Country Club.

Through sponsorships, donations, auctions, and more, the charity’s signature tournament and longest-standing fundraiser raised over $160,000.

Los Angeles Kings Team Ambassador and Hockey Hall of Famer Bob Miller hosted the Golf Classic joined by his longtime counterpart, Jimmy Fox. The evening portion included hearing from “Little” Yvette who shared her story about how having a mentor in her life helped her thrive during her most challenging years.

This year also included golf shirts and hats gifted by Swannies; vendors who delivered food, fun, and refreshments across the course; and silent and live auctions.

It culminated with dinner and awards.

THE VARIEL WARNER CENTER HOSTS WELCOME LUAU ____________________________________ ____________________________________

Photography by Debbie Vaccarello Soon-to-be-open senior living community The Variel Warner Center in Woodland Hills hosted the first of two welcome luaus on Thursday, August 19th, at the Warner Center Marriott.

Transporting guests to the Hawaiian Islands without leaving the mainland, The Variel team and members of their VIP program showed the community and prospective tenants what “inspired senior living” means with a fun-filled luau including live entertainment and delicious food.

Set to open in Spring 2022, the luxury retirement community takes a new approach to senior living inspired by boutique hotels with a clean, contemporary aesthetic, expansive floor plans with gourmet kitchens, a movie theater, indoor pool, spa, and much more.

COMEDY FOR A CAUSE BENEFITS THE FOUNDATION ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Debbie Vaccarello Calabasas native and stand-up comedian Adam Freeman hosted and produced an evening of laughter for THE Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools on September 30th at The Six Chow House in Calabasas.

The sold-out show presented by Subculture Comedy featured special guest comedians Felicia Michaels, Brandon Black, Lisa Alvarado, Ed Roesgen, Jessica Inserra, and Sam Mettler. All ticket sales and a portion of food and beverages benefitted THE Foundation.

Raising three kids in Las Virgenes Unified School District, Adam wanted to bring more engaging local fundraisers to the community, which led him to create “Comedy for a Cause” shows to benefit local schools and organizations while providing his comedian friends a great atmosphere to perform.

His October 28th show benefitted Calabasas High School’s dance program.

Shows are hosted at The Six on the last Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m.

Calabasas Film Festival

From September 29th to October 3rd, the Calabasas Film Festival held its 8th annual five-day event. The festival premiered major motion pictures and showcased documentaries, student films, and top-quality film selections from all genres. The highly anticipated festival allowed the community the opportunity to share their incredible passion for film and television while showcasing all the city has to offer in the entertainment industry. Hundreds of avid filmgoers and entertainment personnel attended each evening’s premieres along with lively pre cocktail parties and after parties. Among the fabulous films, opening night boasted The Sopranos prequel, The Many Saints of Newark, and Saturday afternoon’s screening of Violet invited guests to a Q&A with director Justine Bateman. Lead sponsors included The City of Calabasas and AmaWaterways. Student filmmakers concluded the event with short films submitted for achievement awards. CASA PACIFICA HOSTS 28TH ANNUAL WINE, FOOD & BREW FESTIVAL

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Debbie Vaccarello After its first ever hiatus last year, the Casa Pacifica Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival made its highly anticipated return Sunday, September 26th. As always, the festival hosted an unbeatable array of exhibitors—offering tasty bites, sips of fine wine, and smooth brews.

This year’s Best in Fest Brew—Single Speed American Light Lager by Pedals and Pints—was available for sampling in addition to honorable mentions, including Firestone Walker and Twisted Oak Tavern. The festival main stage featured live music throughout the day, keeping the dance floor packed.

The sold-out festival, recently winning VC Reporter’s Best Wine and Food Event and Best Charity Event for the 10th consecutive year, raises critical funds for Casa Pacifica Centers for Children & Families, which must raise 10% to 12% of its operating budget annually (about $5 million this year). Casa Pacifica is a crisis-care and residential treatment facility for foster and at-risk children. For more information, visit casapacifica.org.

KW REALTY GRAND RE-OPENING CELEBRATION

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Owner Meny Atias and Team Leader Stephanie Alatorre hosted a grand re-opening celebration at KW Realty on September 22nd to showcase the new redesign of the 7500-sq.-ft. office complex in Calabasas. The event was also to highlight the many proud achievements of the KW team, which consists of 344 agents.

KW Realty is home to some of the most top-producing agents in Calabasas— with almost 10,000 transactions and $6 billion in volume sold, with agents earning over $143 Million GCI. Meny Atias also praised the team for the tremendous contributions they’ve made in the community—where the team has donated tens of thousands of dollars to KW Cares and other local charities. Additionally, many of the KW agents donate their time to serve on local boards, SRAR, and women’s councils. The event was cohosted by Pacific Coastline Escrow and also showcased the artistic talents of some of their top-producing agents.

Brenda Johnson, R. Ph., celebrated the 25th anniversary of Calabasas Pharmacy and Healthcare by hosting a free community health care clinic on September 18th. Brenda and the Calabasas Pharmacy team has been proudly caring for customers since 1996 when the pharmacy first became a cornerstone of healthcare for the community.

Since its inception, Brenda and her team have gone above and beyond to make sure her customers’ prescription needs are taken care of, while providing valuable clinical services that bridge the gaps between everyday life and her customers’ periodic checkups with their physicians. 2021 CALABASAS MAYOR’S STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS Mayor James Bozajian presented the 24th Annual Calabasas Mayor’s State of the City Address on October 6th at the Calabasas High School Performing Arts and Education Center. During his speech, the mayor reviewed the city’s accomplishments from the past year and outlined goals for the future, highlighting that 2021 is the 30th anniversary of the city’s incorporation. Mayor Bozajian praised all City of Calabasas departments for the work they did to keep the city functioning during the pandemic along with Lost Hills Sheriff’s deputies and Los Angeles County Fire Department for their work to protect Calabasas. Joanne and John Suwara were named Citizens of the Year, and Michael Brockman was honored with a 30th Anniversary award for his decades of volunteer service to the city. The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce was also recognized with an award presented by Mayor Bozajian for their longstanding partnership with the City.

WOODLAND HILLS WOMAN’S CLUB TEA The Woodland Hills Woman’s Club was proud to hold its 7th Annual Summertime Tea on August 28th, with record attendance and fundraising numbers. Besides missing their event last year due to the pandemic, the most noticeable difference was the venue. This year the event was held at the Woodland Hills Country Club, which provided the ladies with a more elegant environment and superior service. There were 20 decorated tables, raffles, contests, live music, vendors, and a silent auction to entertain and delight the crowd. The tea menu provided by the club offered a vast array of tea sandwiches, specialty condiments, desserts, and tea. All proceeds from Woodland Hills Woman’s Club events go directly back to the local charities they support. Casa Pacifica held its 28th Annual Angels Wine,

Food & Brew Festival on Sunday, September

26th, on the campus of CSU Channel Islands in

Ventura County. They also held the Yummie Top Chef Competition, one of the festival’s most popular events.

The competition included two categories: savory and sweet. Winners in the savory category

included Abdu Romero of Slate Bistro, who won first prize for his succulent pan-seared scallop dish. He also took second prize with Agustin Charco Diego from Star Sushi by Slate for their delectable Hamachi dish. Oscar Ledesma of Limon y Sal finished third for his mouth-watering Scallop Aguachile with Salsa Macha Negra and avocado.

Prizes in the sweet category included Alex Montoya from Honey Cup for his Jasmine Plum Rum Ice Cream Pop. Julia San Bartolome of

Sweet Arleen's came in second with her Miso Plum Smash. And Lisa Morris of Li Mor Cakes won third prize for her sweet and spicy Habanero sugar cookies. Dishes were judged on flavor, presentation, innovation, and quality. All the winners received an award and two VIP tickets and preferred booth placement for next year’s festival. First-place winners also received a special prize package.

At Calabasas Country Club Calabasas Men’s Club Hosts the 2021 RTJ Cup

The Calabasas Men’s Club hosted the annual RTJ Cup Tournament on August 28th. The 18-hole RTJ Cup, named for golf club designers Robert Trent Jones Senior and Junior, is the Club’s annual “TEAM” event, where the players are divided up into two teams. Team one was captained by Men's Club President Ryan Byers and team two was captained by Vice President Artin Sedighan. Both team captains picked their respective teams. A fun-filled day was enjoyed by all.

My friend refuses influenza vaccination because he insists he "got the flu" after receiving the flu shot in the past. What can I tell him?

There are several reasons why this misconception persists:

• Less than 1% of people who are vaccinated with the injectable vaccine develop flu-like symptoms, such as mild fever and muscle aches, after vaccination. This is more common the first time someone receives a flu shot. These side effects are not the same as having influenza.

• Protective immunity doesn't develop until one to two weeks after vaccination. Some people who get vaccinated later in the season (December or later) may be infected with influenza shortly afterward. These late vaccinees develop influenza because they were exposed to someone with the virus before they became immune. It is not the result of the vaccination.

• For many people, "the flu" is any illness with fever, cold symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms. If they get any viral illness, they may blame it on flu vaccine or think they got "the flu" despite being vaccinated. The vaccine only protects against certain influenza viruses, not all.

• Influenza vaccination is our best protection against influenza disease; however, some people who are vaccinated will still get influenza illness despite vaccination.

While vaccine effectiveness can vary, recent studies show that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40 and 60% among the overall population during seasons when most circulating flu viruses are well-matched to the flu vaccine. Effectiveness is generally lower for adults 65 years and older, so a high-dose formulation is recommended for them.

Influenza vaccination has also been shown to reduce influenza disease severity even if someone gets sick after vaccination and reduces the risk of influenza hospitalization and deaths in children and adults. It also reduces the risk of acute cardiac events among people with heart disease.

Please encourage your friend to get vaccinated. It is impossible to get the flu from the shot.

Surprisingly, it means pumpkin or gourd! Thus, it is only fitting that the City of Calabasas celebrated the arrival of fall with its annual Pumpkin Festival on Sunday, October 17th, at Juan de Anza Bautista Park.

Continuing an over-40-year tradition, the festival brought the community together with entertainment surrounding the season’s most prized harvest, the pumpkin.

Presented by the City of Calabasas, the festival was a huge hit.

Not only was there a costume dance party complete with prizes, but the festival also offered live music, marketplace vendors, a food court complete with scrumptious snacks and festive pumpkin treats, pumpkin painting and carving stations, and more. Suited for all ages, parents and kids alike rejoiced in taking part in the Halloween carnival games and spooky activities.
