When you look at the luscious, green hillsides surrounding us, you realize why we are so lucky and spoiled to live here.

This is the prettiest time of year, with everything looking so green and wildflowers blooming all around. The weather is perfect, with just the right amount of warmth, making us all want to spend as much time outside as possible, enjoying our beautiful backyards and gardens.

Our May/June issue is always dedicated to Home Décor and inspirational ways to decorate. Many of our neighbors have graciously shared their thoughts regarding their favorite room in their homes. Local decorators, designers, and other industry experts also offer advice on new trends and how to achieve the interiors of our dreams.

We also dedicate this issue to all women: mothers, daughters, wives, and professionals. Women who often multitask and handle large amounts of responsibilities with ease. We need to support each other and celebrate the power of women!

But we don’t want the men in our lives to feel slighted so we’ve shared some thoughts from dads on the joys of fatherhood, along with input from mothers on the wonders of being a mom. We’ve also included a Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gift guide with local gift ideas to help celebrate those you love.

This issue features the talented Jackson Family on our cover.

Shauna and David are an industry power couple who cofounded their own entertainment company. It seems show business runs in the family since their children have also worked in the industry in a variety of ways.

So, on March 2, women (and a few men) gathered to renew their spirits and learn more about how to nourish their minds, bodies, and souls. In attendance was a soldout crowd of more than 500 guests, including some of Los Angeles and the nation’s leading philanthropists, elected officials, business leaders, and celebrities. This year’s celebration honored Humanitarian of the Year, Dr. Laurence E. Paul; Humanitarian Company of the Year, California Resources Corporation; and Humanitarian Organization of the Year, the Los Angeles Chargers for their distinguished dedication and support of the American Red Cross.

On March 10, Paw Works hosted its 4th Annual Ties & Tails Gala with a James Bond (or James Paw) Casino Royale theme at the Four Seasons Westlake Village. Kaley Cuoco and Brad Goreski hosted the event, Katharine McPhee gave a special performance, and A-List animal-loving celebrities graced the red carpet.

The evening included exciting entertainment with a cocktail hour, live music, silent and live auctions, gambling, and after-dinner dancing. In addition, “Pawsitive Awards” were presented to those instrumental in creating positive change in the lives of animals in Southern California and beyond during 2017.

Marc Ching, the founder of Animal Hope and Wellness, a shelter in Sherman Oaks that houses dogs rescued from the Chinese meat trade for adoption, is determined to bring an end to this horrendous situation and has rescued thousands of dogs so far.

Built in 1915, this year’s Mediterranean-style residence, situated on a hill, has a view all the way to Catalina Island. “The Overlook” was designed by architect Reginald Davis Johnson for his widowed sisters and constructed for $14,000. The Overlook was previously showcased in 2002, and its subsequent owners have since had it renovated with the addition of select contemporary elements, while still retaining its casual, country feel.

Always keep the room’s natural lighting and color in mind. If the room is fairly light, use a dark floor and vice versa.

Another trend that could continue into next year is letting imperfections, such as a flooring’s grain and pockmarks, create a more natural look and feel.

RAY PARKER, JR.: IN-HOME RECORDING STUDIO There is no better space for a musically talented family to get their creative juices flowing than a recording studio. So, it is no wonder that Ray Parker Jr.’s recently completed in-home recording studio is his favorite space. Dan O’Brien of Arcform Design brought Ray’s vision of a warm, retro vibe to life with help of his wife, Elaine, who found the finishing touch to the studio from artist Barbara Domsky of Domsky Glass. “It is a gorgeous sundial of blown glass. It lights up the studio! I call it the ‘Center of the Universe’ and hope that it inspires me and others that come here to create!”

MY FAVORITE SPACE MAYA WILLIAMS: FAMILY ROOM Interior Designer Maya Williams always keeps clients’ personal preferences in mind when designing their rooms. Recently, one of her clients fell in love with the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean following a trip to Capri, Italy. “For a family room, it’s all about comfort and durability,” notes Maya. To give her a daily reminder of her favorite place, Maya used bold patterns in turquoise and teal surrounded by vibrant splashes of color plus ocean-inspired

ERICA AND JOSH FRIEDMAN: KITCHEN When Erica and Josh Friedman first moved to Calabasas in August 2016, they knew they had a little work ahead of them to turn their dream home into a palace.

With help from a decorator, they enhanced each room with the perfect accents. First, they lightened the walls from all brown to white with touches of natural color. Then, they addressed their favorite room, the kitchen. “We wanted to update it without dating it,” noted the Friedmans. “We love the room’s features, such as the metallic tile backsplash.”

MY FAVORITE SPACE KATHERINE STARK DINING ROOM/ KITCHEN Upon entering their Bell Canyon home, one is drawn straight into the Stark family dining room and kitchen, which is by far their favorite space. They recently renovated the kitchen with a mixture of honed-black absolute granite and Carrara marble. They also installed dark hardwood floors and worked around the existing, brick center island and planter to keep the flow traditional. The kitchen and dining room capture sweeping valley views, and the space is open, making it the perfect place to enjoy gatherings with family and friends.

She also adores the Turkish backsplash marble that adorns it. “The entire kitchen is a reflection of my personality and sense of living…bright, airy, and uncluttered,” she says. “It feels clean and unpretentious while seeing lots of action.” Born and raised in Italy, her extended family have lived together in her Hidden Hills home since August 2016. Q: What inspired you to go into the business of memorabilia auctions and start Profiles in History?

Joe: My mom was an avid reader, and she got me hooked on reading about history. I think once I held actual letters penned by Custer, Lincoln, and Washington. I was hooked!

The letters transported me back in time. My love of film led me into the world of fantasy and imagination that I live in today, and I have never looked back.

Q: Where did your love of art and memorabilia come from?

Joe: My parents were antique dealers so I was exposed to art and antiques and saw it all. It’s a combination of nostalgia attached to the memorabilia and the beauty of art that moves me as a collector.

Q: Tell us about what brought your life and business to Calabasas.

Joe: I attended Pepperdine University, and my son went to Oaks Christian School in Westlake. Moving to Calabasas was an easy decision and one of the smartest I’ve made. I love it here.

Q: What are some of your most notable or favored pieces you’ve come across?

Joe: If it’s from a classic movie, we’ve handled it. Some of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous movie costumes, like her famous “Subway Dress” from The Seven Year Itch; Bela Lugosi’s cape from Dracula; the whimsical title car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s original annotated draft script for Citizen Kane; Peter Fonda’s Easy Rider motorcycle; and on and on.

Since you received a shingles vaccine, I assume you are over 50. The new shingles vaccine, Shingrix, approved by the FDA in December 2017, is

recommended for healthy adults over 50, regardless of prior vaccination.

Shingles, or herpes zoster, occurs when the chickenpox virus (varicella zoster), dormant in those who’ve had the illness, reawakens later in life. Almost all adults over 40 carry the chickenpox virus, and as age increases, so does the risk of getting shingles. According to the CDC, the infection strikes about 1 million people in the U.S. each year and nearly one in three adults experience a bout of shingles in their lifetime.

The two to four weeks of shingles, marked by symptoms such as a blistery, painful rash on one side of the body, can be difficult. About one in five people go on to develop post-herpetic neuralgia—nerve pain that can linger for months or years.

The new vaccine is 90% effective compared to 51% with the older version. Protection with the old vaccine is almost nonexistent after nine years. The older version used a live virus and the newer one is a recombinant vaccine with an adjuvant to boost the immune response. CHS HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME The Calabasas High School Theater Program recently entertained our community with their spectacular production of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. The students and staff, under the direction of Bill Garrett, treated their audiences to an intimate retelling of the famous love story, with an emotionally rich score and incredible production value. The combination of talented young actors on stage, the haunting music from the student orchestra and choir, the vibrant costumes, and the impressive stage design made all in attendance briefly forget that they were not at a Broadway show but at their local high school right here in Calabasas. Lead cast included Matthew Sniderman and Blake Ferris as Quasimodo, Joshua Friedman and Augie Isaac as Dom Claude Frollo, Chelsea Rifkin and Sami Staitman as Esmeralda, Cooper Ockenfels and Mateo Gonzales as Phoebus De Martin, and Maddi Lasker and Ian Bowers as Clopin Trouillefou.

LOCAL CALABASAS GIRLS AWARDED IN DANCE CONVENTION Local Calabasas girls recently traveled to Las Vegas for their third year to partake in the renowned dance convention Hollywood Connection. The dancers took dance classes for two days from prestigious teachers from around the country with credits from Broadway, television, and film. The dancers, who train at Calabasas Academy of Dance, competed for two nights. Awards received at the competition include: Marcy Russ, 1st place in category; Erille Weiss, Platinum Award, 2nd place in category; Rachel Reiff and Rachel Rubenstein, Platinum Award, 1st place in category; Junior Tap Team, Gold Medal, 2nd place in category; Senior Tap Team, Platinum Award, 2nd place in category; and Senior Company, Platinum Award.

The Calabasas Academy of Dance won awards in a variety of categories, including Best Choreography, Best Overalls, and Elite Platinum High Scores.

The event was open to all ages and recognized local youth and volunteers who made a contribution to the club.

The afternoon included the presentation of the Youth of the Year awards to Ava Crosby in the 14-to-18-yearold category and Annette Gonzalez in the 13-year-old-and-younger category. Additionally, a performing arts showcase by club members was presented, and there was a special guest performance by Dalton Cyr, an award-winning singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist actor. Adding to the festivities, the afternoon included opportunity drawings with merchandise donated by the local community.

WARRIOR&CO. YOGA AT THE COMMONS On Sunday, February 11, and Saturday, February 24, The Commons at Calabasas hosted complimentary outdoor Family Flow yoga classes in partnership with WARRIOR&CO. Yoga, a local studio that specializes in family and kid-friendly yoga practice. Over 35 local families and community members partook in the 45-minute classes which focused on allowing families to connect, breathe, and have lots of fun together. The classes included a balance of playtime and yoga basics, allowing the parents to move and meditate while their children participated in the practice or played with other children.

School is out and summer is in! Here are a few important summer-safety “S” rules and tips to ensure your family enjoys a safe summer.

Unfortunately, drowning is still a leading cause of death for kids in California. To keep safe around water, follow these three rules: Swim lessons. Everyone should learn how to swim. Not only is it good exercise and fun, but it’s a lifesaving skill.

Supervision. Watch kids in and around the water. With young kids, you must be an arm’s reach away—no relaxing or chatting.

For older children, adults can take turns watching the water. No looking at cell phones.

Safety measures. Pools should be completely surrounded by a fence. Don’t take a pool fence down just because your kids are older since a younger child may visit or a neighbor may wander in.

In Southern California, skin safety is important all year, but especially during the summer. Here are three tips to protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays: Shield skin by seeking shade when possible, wearing wide-brim hats and UPF clothing (available at a variety of price points).

Also, make sure strollers and baby carriers have large sunshades.

Stock up on sunscreen that is chemical free, broad spectrum, and at least SPF 30. It’s okay to use on babies too if needed.

Safely and frequently apply sunscreen as part of your morning routine, after swimming, and every two hours in the sun. Wash it off at night. Teach kids to apply sunscreen properly for when they are away from you.

With a little preparation, you can enjoy a fun-filled and safe summer.

CALABASAS ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION ANNUAL FORUM On February 22, the City of Calabasas hosted an environmental forum on gardening and landscaping at Founders Hall. An illustrated talk, Gardening for Wildlife, discussing native plants that provide essential leaves, nectar, seeds, nuts, and berries for Southern California birds, bees, and butterflies was presented by Lisa Novick. From Bio Contractors, Curtis Thomsen discussed native and drought-tolerant plants and smart gardening. Bryan Badgett from Environmental Patterns spoke about smart water management and irrigation. One of the goals of this year’s forum was to promote registration of Calabasas properties with the National Wildlife Federation so that the city becomes a Certified Community Wildlife Habitat. He and I look for any excuse to have fun with cars and friends. Ron is a passionate guy, and when we decided to organize a scenic drive with friends, well, the event filled up in less than 24 hours.Starting at Lavaggio in Agoura Hills, it was the perfect place to be.

As the cars began to roll in, it was clear that it was going to be a star-studded lineup—from limited-edition Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Porsches to the star of the show, a Jaguar XJ220. And yes, the owner drove the car for the entire drive! We cruised through the Santa Monica Mountains to Malibu. It was a lovely Saturday afternoon, and the weather was perfect. With the exotic cars on PCH and a warm winter day—it was quintessential California. As we toured the Santa Monica Mountains on the way back to Lamborghini North Los Angeles in Calabasas, we knew two things: One, it has been way too long, and two, we need to get together and drive with friends more regularly.
