This is one of my favorite times of year. The great weather, the bright and balmy evenings, and the endless outdoor activities always bring a smile to my face. The season also marks special family holidays like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and graduations which are wonderful times for so many of our readers to celebrate.

Our May/June issue is always something I look forward to. It is the annual issue dedicated to the home, and the gorgeous décor and charm of Calabasas homes and neighborhoods are not to be missed. We are honored to give you an opportunity to peek inside the homes of your neighbors and see why their chosen spaces are their favorites. We always look forward to this section as we get to learn the backstory, inspiration, and memories that take place in these people’s lives and homes.

If you are motivated to do some home improvements, we feature many experts in their respective fields who shed light on the top trends, best quality, and top options for your next project. If remodeling and improving is too big to tackle, some nice décor and gift ideas are also featured in our Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Gift Guides. All of these featured items are locally sourced, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

This issue features the Foxhoven family, and we are delighted to introduce them to you. One of the most important aspects of parenting to Brad and Kenya has been instilling the importance of following your passions and working hard, ideals that were taught to them by their parents.

On April 6, the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce hosted the Annual Mayoral Luncheon at the Calabasas Country Cub to honor Mayor Mary Sue Maurer.

Mayor Mary Sue Maurer addressed approximately 100 guests about how businesses and going green can coincide.

With the main topic being conserving natural resources and being economically friendly, Maurer emphasized that using organic products, vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics, and chemical-free cleaning products can have a huge impact on the environment. “Going Green” is also good business as consumers today are more and more inclined to support businesses and companies that are eco-friendly.

Maurer, a mother of three adult sons, works for the state’s Department of Toxic Substances Control. She was first elected to the city council in 2005, and this is her third time serving as mayor of Calabasas. Maurer’s priorities on the council over the past 11 years have included

The Foxhoven girls run track, play soccer, do gymnastics and cheerleading, participate in musical theater, and have obtained their Certificate of Merit in piano for the past three years. “Our son Brayden does a form of martial arts called Z Ultimate.

He was even featured in the Los Angeles Times doing a Twitch club at his school,” gushes proud mom Kenya. Nine-yearold Kaylee absolutely loves to cook, which she got from her grandmother. Loving parents Brad and Kenya know the value of encouraging passion in their children and stoke the fires of their potential consistently.

However, this parental mantra of “follow your dreams” did not start with this generation.

Both Brad and Kenya were raised in homes where anything was possible with hard work.

Brad grew up in the small town of Evergreen, Colorado. The youngest of four brothers, Brad’s parents supported the boys in anything they got involved in. From upcoming technologies, such as the mobile phone and desktop computers, to sports camps and teams, Brad was encouraged to believe that the sky was the limit. Hundreds of miles from the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, little Brad Foxhoven dreamed of making video games and TV shows. “As far-fetched as that would seem living nowhere near Hollywood, my parents never dissuaded me from going that path,” says Brad. “They made me feel that anything was possible.”

Kenya, her parents, and older brother fled communist Cuba in 1980. “My parents knew that being raised in a communist country would not allow for my brother and I to have the opportunities that they dreamt for us. Leaving absolutely everything behind, other than the clothes on our backs and our birth certificates, we had to start all over again.” After leaving Havana in the historical “Mariel Boatlift,” Kenya’s family arrived in Florida to start their new life.

Some of their favorite places to travel include Mammoth, Grand Cayman, Hawaii, Florida, and the Bahamas. For Brad and Kenya, their favorite destination is anywhere in Europe, with Costa Rica in a close second place. It is incredibly important to the pair to introduce their children to the diversity that is only found in travel and experiencing new cultures and people.

On March 10, friends, family, and community members joined the ladies of Westlake Village Junior Women’s Club for their fabulous third annual Wig & Stache Party at The Four Seasons in Westlake. Up to 200 guests mingled in an array of festive wigs and fun mustaches while sipping on complimentary champagne.

Guests enjoyed a fun photo booth before taking part in a wine pull and bidding on silent auction baskets filled with high-end treats and packages donated from various businesses and shops throughout the community.

These silent-auction items were almost as exciting as the action during the actual live auction which had people jumping to their feet.

The 718 Porsche Boxster S. Porsche nailed it. The 2017 Boxster S is absolutely a driver’s car. Point it, and it goes. And, it goes fast.

For 2017, Porsche has updated the engine with a turbocharged four cylinder, stepping away from the previous flat-six. Porsche enthusiasts may not enjoy the idea of that, but I would ask, have you driven the car?

Baby brother to the 911, the Boxster S is a class unto itself. It could easily be your daily driver or your weekend sports car.

The 2017 performs so well that I would say it could also be your race car. The turbocharged four cylinder will catapult you to 60 in under four seconds. It has a top speed of just under 180 mph. The sound of the engine is a symphony of wind and precision perfection, moving metal, fuel, and air to provide you with a song so lovely that you will have a hard time taking your foot off of the gas. Shifting the PDK transmission, you are the conductor and the story you are telling; well, that is the adventure of the road and your destination. The Boxster S is everything Porsche stands for.

No matter how beautiful your home décor, it all looks flat without the proper lighting. One of the hottest trends today for both indoor and outdoor spaces is LED lighting.

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, which simply means it emits light electronically. When compared to standard bulbs or halogen lights, LEDs are smaller, consume less energy, and last longer. They do not emit har mful UV rays or contain har mful toxins. They simply appear brighter.

Lighting color is measured on a temperature scale referred to as Kelvin (K). LED lights have color temperatures ranging from 2500K to 6500K. The lower the Kelvin number, the more yellow the light appears. Higher Kelvin numbers give off more of a blue or white light. If you’re looking for war m-yellow light, use bulbs marked 2700K to 2900K. For a whiter light, try 3000K to 4100K. And for a bluer white light, use 4200K to 6500K. This range allows LEDs to be incredibly versatile and useful in nearly any setting.

IDN FLOORING Flooring trends change from year to year as homeowners acquire new tastes and technology allows for a larger variety of designs.

According to IDN Flooring in Canoga Park, dark hues struck the right note with homeowners this year and last. Flooring finishes ranging from jet black to light gray remain very popular. Always keep the room’s natural lighting and color in mind. If the room is fairly light, use a dark floor and vice versa.

Another trend that could continue into next year is letting imperfections, such as a flooring’s grain and pockmarks, create a more natural look and feel.

Many factors come into play when deciding what flooring to choose. Determine your ideal wood; decide if you’d like engineered or solid flooring, floated, glued or nailed, and whether the strips should be laid straight, diagonally, or otherwise.

Strips placed lengthwise make a room look longer. Placed widthwise, they make it look wider. Lay your floor in the same direction as the light entering the room. Flooring can also be placed in all kinds of patterns. Always keep the size of the room in mind; some require a large area to achieve their full effect.

Different woods also possess varying degrees of hardness. Choose denser flooring for rooms that must withstand a lot of traffic, such as hallways, living rooms, and kitchens.

Bedrooms usually receive the least. Finishing touches are also extremely important. Oiled finishes work well with floors that get a lot of wear. If one part of an oiled floor is damaged, for instance, it is possible to repair that specific area. MY FAVORITE SPACE DEBORAH SWEENEY: POOL BATH “We wanted a bathroom that would be perfect when everyone came in from the pool – a tile floor, rock shower…super clean and simple,” remarks Deborah Sweeney. “I also love the connecting office where we spend a lot of time as a family doing our work.” The Sweeneys had a little help designing the space from the awesome team at One Week Bath. “I love the rock shower. It has no door and feels good on your feet.” Fresh, breezy scents further enhance the outdoor/indoor experience. “It always smells like a day at the beach.”

HANNAH AND LARRY HIRSCH: KITCHEN “My kitchen is definitely my favorite room,” remarks Hannah Hirsch. “It’s the place where all my friends and family can gather to share a funny story, a wonderful moment, and fabulous dessert, food, and drinks.” The inspiration for the kitchen came from Hannah’s love of water. “We didn’t use an interior designer,” Toni says. “I knew the look I wanted was very Art Deco, using various shades of gray with accents of black and white.” Toni loves the large picture windows that provide beautiful views of the San Fernando Valley from sunrise to sunset. “We love opening up the windows and enjoying the fresh air,” she adds. Lanphier also helped design the family’s previous home. “From our deck, we can see the sun peek over mountains that surround us on all sides.

If this is your first time working with a designer, you might have some questions: How do they charge? What do they charge? Are they making money off of the things they’re selling me? What, when you get right down to it, does a designer actually do? PASADENA SHOWCASE The 53rd Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design, one of the largest and most successful house-and-garden tours in the country, is currently open to the public until May 21. This year 19 design firms transformed the interior of the home, while six exterior design firms took on the grounds. Built in 1916, this year’s English Tudor was built for lawyer-turned-actor Samuel Hinds and his wife. This 7,479-square-foot residence features six bedrooms, four bathrooms, and two half baths. Not only was this the house for the Hinds’, but today, it is also a location used in movies, such as Beaches, Alice in Wonderland, and La La Land. The Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is a non-profit California Corporation whose members donate their time and talents to produce the annual PSHA. What a way to spend a day…celebrating 70 years of Ferrari at Sherwood Country Club for the Revolution de L‘ Automobile.

For those of you familiar with Sherwood, you know that a more beautiful venue may not exist. Personally, I love spending time at Sherwood. Adding a world-class automotive event to the already incredible ambiance, well, that is near perfection.

“Rev Auto,” as the event is also known, has taken different approaches than other events. The idea is to celebrate the “finer things” in one sitting. This approach has led to great success over the handful of years that the event has taken place. Collectors from all over California have celebrated this event by participating and showing their masterpieces. Tens of millions of dollars of automotive excellence were on display for the concours attendees. A more perfect venue for the rarest and most desirable collector cars may not exist.

The event was all inclusive, and Sherwood outdid itself with gourmet offerings, brunch, and dessert bars. You could sip champagne while listening to the Grammy-award-winning trio playing or sit on the patio and enjoy the beautiful grounds and atmosphere. For shopping, there were high-end vendors as well as a silent auction with great offerings from all over the world. A percentage of proceeds also went to support local charities, which was also appreciated by the attendees. The event was an absolute success, and it was an incredible way to spend the day with family, friends, and fellow car enthusiasts.

If you have never attended the event, be sure to mark your calendars for the 2018 event; it is truly a wonderful experience, and I would suggest attending.

by Stuart Weitzman and AHA volunteer Hemali Dave, drew more than 40 guests who enjoyed sips and bites and learned heart-health tips from UCLA Health cardiologist Sheila Sahni. The event raised $2,000 for AHA. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming nearly 801,000 lives each year – about one of every three deaths in America. About 92.1 million American adults are living with some form of cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association’s mission is building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. From camp fires to making new friends, sleepaway camp can provide fun experiences and great memories. But how do you know if your child is ready?

More than a child’s age, it really depends on whether or not he or she is emotionally ready. Can your child stay overnight at a friend or relative’s house without calling you for a 2:00 a.m. pickup?

While you’re deciding, there are a few things you can prepare for summer camp in hopes it works out. Your child will need a complete physical exam and health form filled out. If your child has a medical condition, make sure you talk to the camp nurse or doctor, preorder medication, and prepare a written action plan in case your child has symptoms. Prepare your child to take care of her or himself – wear a sun hat, apply sunscreen and bug repellant, and drink plenty of water.

Before you drop your child off, have a conversation about homesickness. Something like this: “It’s okay if you get a little sad and miss me, and it’s ok to not miss me, but even if you do miss me, you can still have fun. We want you to have this great experience and are proud of you. We hope that you meet new friends and are open to new activities and experiences.

Your counselors or camp staff will help if anything is bothering you, no matter how little or big the issue.” Make sure to pack a special item, such as a pillow or family photo, so your child has a bit of home while away.

With a little prep work, your child can have an amazing camp experience (and you can have a parenting break), hopefully for many summers to come.
