FIRST ANNUAL FIRE AND ICE BALL

The staff of the newly renamed Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center Women’s Pavilion hosted their First Annual Fire and Ice Ball on December 13, 2019, at XL Restaurant in Agoura Hills. The event, organized by multitalented labor-and-delivery nurse Mana Arshadi and Dr. Neetu Sodhi of Bloom Obstetrics and Gynecology, was a huge success for the 115 guests in attendance. Dr. Tanya Altmann of Calabasas Pediatrics Wellness Center also shared in the planning and festivities.

Hospital staff in attendance enjoyed the opportunity to change out of their usual scrubs and into formal, fire-red attire. LED fire dancers entertained the crowd as they enjoyed a photo booth, sweet treats from VLO Cake Pops, cuisine from Mejico Grill, and signature cocktails. All in attendance voted for next year’s theme that you won’t want to miss – disco ball. For more information,

LAURA GARBELL HOSTS ANNUAL GIRLS NIGHT IN

Laura Garbell hosted her annual “Girl’s Night In” at her beautiful home in The Oaks in Calabasas. Laura and her husband, Marc, have lived in The Oaks for 15 years and have formed great friendships with many of their neighbors in the community.

Laura hosts this festive event each year to celebrate and honor these special friendships. It’s also a great way for many of the moms to enjoy a fabulous “night in” without having to go out of the neighborhood. The evening consists of food, wine, music, and laughter, and moms can catch up and discuss their busy lives. Laura and Marc founded The Garbell Group at KW Realty where they have over 30 years of experience helping clients achieve their dreams of home ownership.

14TH ANNUAL ROSS PORTER CELEBRITY GOLF CLASSIC

The Ross Porter Celebrity Golf Classic had its most successful golf tournament to date on Monday, November 4, at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. In its fourteenth year, the tournament grossed over $180,000 for Stillpoint Family Resources and its varied programs. Retired Dodger announcer Ross Porter and his many local sports celebrity friends came to golf and meet with golf amateurs who paid to play amongst the sports legends. Leading the list of familiar faces were Vin Scully, Tommy Lasorda, Mike Scioscia, Mickey Hatcher, Shawn Green, and many other former Dodger elites, as well as TV sports personality Chris “Geeter� McGee. A sold-out field of golfers spent a beautiful day on the links golfing for a great cause, enjoying raffle and auction opportunities, a catered BBQ lunch on the course, and dinner to consummate the evening. GRAND OPENING OAKS CHRISTIAN’S RESIDENTIAL DORMS & IDEA LAB

February 11 was a special evening for Oaks Christian School (OCS) – one of the few national Christian secondary schools and the only school in the Conejo Valley to offer both a day and boarding option – as they celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting of their state-ofthe-art residential boarding facility where 40 students have already made history as the very first residents. The dorm -- with three modern kitchens, a fitness room, lounge areas, computer study areas, and more -- will eventually house 68 international and domestic students.

In addition to the dorms, OCS also celebrated their IDEA (innovation, design, engineering, and aeronautics) Lab – a 10,000-square-foot facility which houses the innovative Institute of Engineering and features physics, VEX robotics, computer science, rocketry lab aeronautics, and metal and wood fabrication classrooms. Nearly 400 design enthusiasts and patrons of the arts attended the debut of the 56th Pasadena Showcase House of Design annual Empty House Party on Friday, January 17. Held at the Locke House in Arcadia, guests enjoyed a preview of the property before it begins its transformation into the magnificent Showcase House.

Throughout the evening, guests met with designers and glimpsed the various design concepts while enjoying delectable culinary offerings from Cynthia Brooks Distinctive Catering.

The soiree, chaired by Dana Marevich and Lynn Mehl, allowed guests and media a sneak peak of the Federal-country-style, 6,700-square-foot estate designed by Hollywood’s society architect Gerard R. Colcord. In the months to follow, 21 design firms will update the Locke Home into an elegant residence for modern times.

Imagine Fest brought its blend of yoga, music, and conscious conversation back to the area, hosting its fourth year at Agoura Hills Recreation and Event Center. The eccentric fundraising festival was created by Natalie Backman to benefit the nonprofit Unlikely Heroes and its efforts to save and restore the lives of child victims of sex trafficking around the world.

Guests enjoyed a day of perfect weather, complete with live music from the likes of Maya Jupiter, Satsang, Tubby Love & Amber Lily, and Player Won, who fused entertainment with conscious healing and awareness.

While work takes up a good deal of Laura and Billy’s time, they still manage to fuel their other passions, which include wine and foreign cars. “I love wine and traveling to amazing vineyards across the world,” notes Billy. “My relationship with Ferrari started when I was just 18 years old. I became founder, then president, of the Ferrari Owners Club in Mexico. I established close ties with such top Ferrari business icons as Lucca Di Montezemolo, Jean Todt, and the unforgettable Formula One racecar driver, Michael Schumacher. I was truly honored to be part of Ferrari’s 60th anniversary, where I rode on the private Fiorano Circuit track in a fabulous Formula One racecar.”

The couple’s proudest accomplishments are, of course, their two wonder ful children. Dali currently attends Louisville High School in Woodland Hills. She previously went to Alice C. Stelle Middle School in Calabasas where she served as President of the Associated Student Body (ASB). Billy Jr. attended Bay Laurel Elementary, and now A.C. Stelle in Calabasas. When not studying or working out, Billy Jr. and his sister enjoy taking tennis lessons at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center.

Family trips often include beaches, spas, and golf. One of their favorite vacation spots, Punta Cana, sits at the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, between the balmy Caribbean Sea and cooler Atlantic Ocean. The area offers everything the family loves, from championship golf courses and luxurious spas to sightseeing via yachts and helicopters and delightful local restaurants serving authentic island cuisine. Back home, they spend lots of quality time dining at some of their favorite hangouts, such as Toscanova in The Commons, XO Tequila Grill in The Village, and NOBU, Mr. Chow, and Mastro's in Malibu.

The Solanos work together to balance home life, school, and careers. They do almost everything as a team, including travel, theater, restaurants, and events. This worldly family continues to inspire themselves and others to become the best they can be, surrounded by friends, family, and the community they love. n

Lydia Gable Realty Group with Compass and Rick Winters of Winters Financial Group, Inc., held their tenth and final Coats for Casa Pacifica charity event at Three Springs Park in Westlake Village on Saturday, January 11.

The popular winter festival and charity event invited participants to bring new or gently used winter clothes, including coats, sweaters, hoodies, mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats of all sizes to benefit the foster and at-risk youth of Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families in Camarillo.

With 30 tons of snow for sledding and playing, parents and children alike were invited to enjoy an afternoon of family fun complete with complimentary coffee and smoothies and kids' crafts.

Classic Chevy Show The 38th Annual Classic Chevy Show will be a huge success.

Expected are over 250 show cars to be on display and a couple thousand spectators attending. The Classic Chevy Club of SoCal is one of the most energetic and passionate groups of car owners out there. The Club chose Rancho San Antonio Boys Town not only as their location, but as the beneficiary of the show. Proceeds are donated to Rancho San Antonio Boys Town in Chatsworth, which provides underprivileged youth with a safe home and learning environment.

Over the last 12 years, the Club has donated over $200,000 to Rancho to help support the boys that reside there. This year, they are expected to donate around $25,000. The Club has a strong connection with Rancho and with Brother John, who runs the organization. The Club does its best to raise the bar each year and put on the best show possible. This year’s event will be huge with a variety of attractions and fundraisers, including a charity raffle, bake auction, silent auction, and LS Chevy Engine raffle, courtesy of Rydell Chevrolet and Vendor Midway. The top 50 show cars are awarded.

The show is noted for having some of the best food around.

The BBQ is organized, hosted, and prepared by the team at Boys Town and staffed with the boys that reside there. It is a five-star dining event, and everybody raves about the food. We are on the verge of living much longer, healthier lives. Yes, there are jade rollers and K beauty masks, questions about vitamin D levels, and pollution particles. There are tricks to making everything look better, smoother, tighter, and more youthful. However, there is something more that science has in store for us. A systemic answer to aging. This way our organs and brain and skin can remain youthful and vibrant much longer.

If you are concerned about aging, you are not alone. The billionaires of the world are investing big in the future of longevity. Not just longevity, they say. Not just your lifespan but your “healthspan,” which is more important. What we want is a long, healthy, functional life. Calico, Juvenescence, and Unity Biotechnology are three examples of large companies dedicated to finding the holy grail. The great news is that they are making progress! The latest concepts of systemic and skin anti-aging are as follows.

Senolytics: Literally, this is Latin for “breaking aging apart!” Senolytics are a class of drugs being studied for the purpose of reversing symptoms of aging. There are a number of drugs, some familiar and some unfamiliar, with the ability to reverse signs of aging in various creatures. Quercitin, which is in your Emergen-C packet, and Azithromycin, from your last Z-Pak, are the two most familiar ones. There are other antibiotics and some biologics that also affect aging pathways.

Studies are being conducted at Harvard Medical School, Yale, Mayo Clinic, and University of Texas. The way these drugs work is to kill off senescent, or dying/dysfunctional cells, so that the exuberant healthy cells can predominate. It turns out that this can alleviate multiple age-related conditions, chronic diseases, geriatric syndromes, and frailty. Studies have shown that lifespan and healthspan increases are definitely possible in animals. This is promising news for all of us!

Hypoglycemics: This means “low sugar” in Latin. Medicines and supplements that reduce blood sugar and therefore reduce insulin release have been shown to increase lifespan. It is possible that hypoglycemic drugs provide anti-aging benefits by reducing the effects of glycation of the tissues in the body. Glycation is the process by which sugar byproducts attach themselves to organs and vessels and skin and essentially harden them. This is a mild version of the complications that diabetic organs suffer. At any rate, low-carb diets, very low-calorie diets, and hypoglycemic drugs all prevent sugar spikes in the bloodstream and have all been shown to contribute to longevity.

Metformin is the most widely prescribed oral hypoglycemic medication for type 2 diabetes worldwide. Metformin also slows down aging in model organisms and reduces the incidence of aging-related diseases such as neurodegenerative disease and cancer in humans. In spite of its widespread use, the mechanisms by which metformin slows aging remain largely unknown. Further, not all individuals prescribed metformin derive the same benefit and some develop side effects. There is more yet to be learned about this drug and how it works before it becomes mainstream, however we are on the path of discovery about sugar, glycation, and aging.

Young plasma transfusions: The lore about vampires may have been more than just horror stories. There appears be some signal in blood serum that tells cells how old they are and how old they should act. This was discovered in quite a macabre way when the blood supply of two rodents was connected and the older rat began to show signs of youthfulness, both external and internal. When the rodents were separated, their respective ages and appearances returned. This experiment is called parabiosis and has been reproduced in various institutions.

The idea of blood transfusions to humans from young donors in order to reverse signs of aging was born from this. Whole blood transfusions are risky so young plasma transfusions are being studied. The company Ambrosia specializes in this but plasma transfusions have risks and the positive effects are difficult to measure. The hope is that we can isolate factors in plasma and blood that signal healthy cell proliferation so that we can effect anti-aging parabiosis-like results without transfusions.

Stem cells: Stem-cell therapy is somewhat old news, however we must keep in mind that due to U.S. regulations, the full gamut of possibilities with regards to anti-aging is not being explored here.

Sites in Panama and Chile and various other countries where regulations are not as strict are currently conducting treatments and studies. Patients who travel for these treatments report a feeling of well-being and a decrease in aches and pains all over the body. There is an ocean of knowledge still to be discovered about stem cells and how we can harness them.

It is important to note that stem cells with different genetic content than your own will not function in your body. Your immune system is designed to seek out and kill foreign cells. However, there are some great strides being made using one’s own stem cells. It is important to note that adding cells to the body could eventually lead to a big load of senescent cells later on. These could possibly “turn” on you and signal accelerated aging. Regardless, science is moving us toward a better understanding so these questions will be elucidated soon.

My joy is to make people look and feel better. Most of the time, looking “better” correlates with looking younger. After years of practice, I have become adept at ridding people of wrinkles, brown spots, broken blood vessels, and skin cancers and unwanted growths that show up, as well as tightening and fir ming loose skin. What is exciting is to realize that there is other very advanced experimentation going on to help prevent and reverse aging of the entire body, inside and out. Until these experimental concepts come to fruition, I am here for you. Take heart! I always say, “One day, age won’t matter.” n

At the adult-only event, participants toured the home set up to portray a teen party with volunteer youth actors voicing concerns expressed by local teens and young adults.

Targeted toward youth (ages 12 to 25), parents, and the broader community, the Reality Party included the 30-minute simulation of the underage teen party followed by a 30-minute debrief and discussion with the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department. The main goal of these parties is to help parents understand the current and local culture in ways that will help them have more relevant and meaningful discussions with their kids. Those sweet childhood classics, Shirley Temple, made from grenadine, lemon-lime soda, and ginger ale, and Roy Rogers, with cherry cola, grenadine, and pomegranate syrup, are even making a comeback for grown-ups. Peyman and Chef DeMane owned several other Southern California restaurants, including the former Leila’s Restaurant & Bar in nearby Oak Park, which served the community for over 15 years. The duo’s latest venture, Pearl District’s sister restaurant, sporting the same name, opened last year along lively Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks.

Both spots offer locals a chance to bump into friends or simply enjoy a drink at their long bar. “Our beers are local favorites, including a variety of craft beers,” notes General Manager Erick Lumley. The wine list runs even longer than the bar. The Manhattan, combining Bulleit rye, Carpano Antica, made by the company that invented vermouth, and chocolate bitters, is aged for six weeks in oak barrels. Other cocktails, with names such as Purple Rain, Winterberry Smash, and Breaking Bad, are also unique.

For those searching for something sweet, a variety of ports, sweet wines, and decadent desserts are available. Try the crème caramel or duet of sorbet for a gluten-free treat. Or go over the top with bittersweet chocolate bread pudding or a wonder bar, made with a crisp shortbread crust, peanut butter-chocolate bourbon ganache, caramel-peanut topping, and salted caramel ice cream. It’s wunderbar!

Porsche Corral Days at Supercar Sunday are incredible because you never know who or what type of cars will turn up. That is something that Supercar Sunday is known for as well—diversity.

This past Porsche Corral was no different.

When we got word from Bisi Ezerioha of Bisimoto Engineering that he wanted to share one of his latest creations, we were hugely excited. It was not the first time Bisi attended Supercar Sunday, and we hope it will not be his last. Bisi was very kind to share his Bisimoto Porsche 935 K3 Electric race car with Supercar Sunday. The car makes 635hp, and yes, it is indeed all electric. Needless to say, it was the car of the day‌perhaps, the year! The attendees went wild over the all-electric Porsche race car, and Bisi was equally excited to share and spend time answering questions for hours. It was awesome! Thank you, Bisi! Porsche Corral Day was a huge success with some of the rarest Porches on display as well as daily drivers and track cars. From air-cooled to turbos and RS Models, if Porsche made it, there was an example of it at Supercar Sunday.

Not to get off topic, but it was a hugely successful morning with every type of other make and model on display as well. Hot rods, classics, imports, European, and just about everything else that can drive in, did drive in. It was fantastic!
