There’s something about summer that just re-energizes me. Between wanting to get healthy and fit and trying out new summer recipes, my soul feeds off the long sunny days. Parents and friends came together on June 3 to host a great party at the home of Marisa Lainer at The Oaks in Calabasas. This fabulous event was the scene of a great fundraising party where all proceeds were donated to the Bay Laurel Elementary School in Calabasas.

The event was organized by a dedicated group of Bay Laurel Moms who were instrumental in raising over $8,000 for this fundraising event.

Organizers included Laura Garbell, Julie Tesser, Nisa Zap, Marisa Lainer, Lisa Friedman, Carrie Brenner, Jodie Katofsky, Alexis Rouss, Errina Mercer, Jill Gilman, Jody Stiegemeyer, Carla Rosso and Art Smith. This year’s party theme was “Calabasas Coachella”, where everyone enjoyed a great night of food, drinks, music, dancing, and friendship.

From Sara’s dance classes to Benjamin’s baseball practice to volunteering at the kids’ school, Julie’s full-time position as mom kept her busy. As her children got older, Julie helped part-time as an office administrator in Jeff’s practice. She is also an independent skincare consultant with Rodan and Fields.

Both Ben and Sara have been active in the Calabasas community since an early age. They both attended Bay Laurel Elementary School and A.C. Stelle Middle School in Calabasas.

For high school, Ben and Sara attended de Toledo High School, a private Jewish high school in West Hills. At de Toledo, the siblings were met with a very unique opportunity.

Both Ben and Sara were able to take part in an exchange program with a school in Israel.

Ben spent three weeks in Israel and Sara spent three months in this life-changing program.

Now 20 years old, Ben is off studying film production - with an emphasis in directing, at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University in Orange. A junior in the fall, Ben is already putting his minor in business entrepreneurship to work. He and a fellow film student from Chapman formed a production company called Fourth Floor Entertainment.

Ben explains that they started with event videography and montages and have since moved on to music videos and short films, with the eventual goal of producing full-length feature films.

Sara, now 17, just graduated high school and will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall. With a business administration major, her true passion lies in her minor: dance. Sara has been dancing since preschool. She studied at Retter’s Academy of Dance and was a member of Rhythm Machine Company for six years. In high school, Sara danced on the varsity dance team for all four years, acting as captain in her senior year. Sara hopes to keep dancing for as long as she can and eventually incorporate her love of dance into her career.

With the youngest Glaser about to leave for college in the fall, Jeff and Julie again find themselves in a time of transition. “The house will be much quieter without the kids, but it is exciting to see them thriving and going on with their adult lives,” admits Julie. Because the Glaser children and their friends have grown up together, many since elementary school, plenty of Jeff and Julie’s friends are going through the same transition, which makes it easier. “We parents have known each other for years because of our kids. We aren’t alone in becoming empty-nesters,” adds Julie.

As for Ben and Sara, growing up in Calabasas has definitely helped prepare them to be a part of a community and inspired them to be respectful citizens. They have learned

An evening of perfect weather and fun was had by all, as they tasted wines from around the world and enjoyed delicious food from our local restaurants. Local wineries from Navarro, Conundrum, Giessinger, Sunland Vintage, and Anheuser-Busch quenched thirsts and had people coming back for more.

The Round Meadow Elementary School community gathered together on April 29 to celebrate a fabulous evening under the stars at the home of Mureau Estates residents Jeff Tuckel and Christina Murphy in Calabasas to benefit their premiere Parents’ Auction Event that raises important funds for the school.

Guests enjoyed delicious cuisine presented by Bruce’s Catering & Events, a “Sparkling Champagne” raffle to win a $2500 gift certificate to Polacheck’s Jewelers, and a live and silent auction. A common assumption is that the choice to reupholster is cost effective as compared with buying new, but this is not always the case. A well-made sofa with great lines or a French bergere chair with wonderful character are certainly worthy candidates, but re-upholstery is an investment. The typical sofa requires about 21 yards of fabric, and upholstery-weight fabric can range between $90 to $150 per yard. I generally expect the labor to reupholster an average-sized sofa to cost around $1,000. A typical lounge chair requires about nine yards of fabric and will cost around $500 in labor. The reality is that reupholstering can sometimes cost more than a new piece, but if the bones of the piece are worthy, then the investment is worthwhile.

The important takeaway when it comes to reupholstering an existing piece is that the true value lies beneath the surface. In today’s online marketplace, upholstery can be one of the most challenging categories to vet. I counsel clients to learn what’s on the inside of what they’re purchasing and to put the bulk of the dollars they spend “underneath the hood,” especially if the piece is to receive everyday use. We recently had clients who purchased a massive leather sectional from a very popular catalog brand. Nine months in, the seat and back cushions had sagged to half of their previous height. It felt like their sofa was stuffed with smoke and mirrors! We actually see this quite often with catalog and online upholstery.

It took 18 years of everyday use before those sofas needed to be reupholstered, and I went on to recover them twice for use in two different homes, after she passed them down to me. The lesson is, as always, that you get what you pay for. Don’t be bedazzled by surface sparkle. Do your homework and try to invest in upholstery that is as fine on the inside as it is on the outside. I promise that if you do, you will never be sorry!

SANDY HILL’S GARDEN OASIS IN CALABASAS

By Pax Ansley Photography by Kali Willcox Nestled away in The Oaks community of Calabasas is a luscious garden oasis that would seem to rival even the legendary hanging gardens of Babylon. Sandy Hill, wife to former city council member and mayor of Calabasas, Bob Hill, lives in a gorgeous house with her husband in a wonderful community.

Sandy Hill has had a green thumb for as long as she can remember. “I got started in gardening at a very young age,” says Sandy. “I think I was a farmer in my previous life. I always had a vegetable garden as a youngster and never lost the love of watching things grow.”

Her stunning oasis features vegetable gardens, bird feeders, and animal-shaped topiaries, as well as tons of fantastic and fragrant flowers.

She maintains everything herself, down to the cute little bear-shaped topiary. As effortless as Sandy makes it all seem, having a dream backyard

requires

much

patience

and

planning as well as maintenance. For Sandy, this is her bliss. “Every yard is like a canvas for an artist. I look at the yard, and in my mind, I see different elevations, heights of different plants, and a color scheme.”

Sandy has been gardening for at least 50 years. She began her career as an interior designer in the early 1980s. She quickly realized that instead of focusing on the inside of her clients’ houses, her eye was constantly drawn outside. She found her passion in gardens and yards, and her work steadily started taking a turn towards greener pastures. After moving to Sun Valley, Idaho, she took the plunge and started her own landscaping business, called “Petals and Twigs.”

Years later, now in Calabasas, her own garden thrives in the California sun. “My favorite style no matter where I am is English Country,” gushes Sandy. “I love all the flowers, and I try to incorporate some succulents and water-resistant plants where I can.” Sandy finds happiness and fulfillment in maintaining her gorgeous garden, and her love of all things green definitely shines through. “My favorite design feature is shade gardens. I use a lot of tree ferns, hydrangeas, Mother

Make sure they feel safe when going into an activity, program, or sport. Start slow. Find something they show an interest in and then ease into it. Also, have kids bring a friend the first time so it’s not as intimidating for them as doing it alone.

Swimming and gymnastics. Swimming, because it’s summer! Gymnastics because it’s indoors and the amount of action-packed activity we can do in any given day is incredible. Trampolines, relays, the foam pit, the ninja course, obstacle courses, parkour – we really keep them moving for the length of our programs and have something for everyone.

Q: Any final remarks you’d like to make to our readers?

A:

Summer is such a special time and it’s over so quickly. I would encourage everyone to get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine and outdoors. Pediatrician Practically speaking, without avoiding the outdoors, how can I protect my child’s skin from sun?

Skin safety and skin cancer prevention is important year round, but especially during the summer when children spend hours on end outdoors. In Calabasas, it’s practically impossible to avoid the sun, but the following tips can help you safely enjoy summertime.

Even before your baby is born, invest in a stroller/baby carrier with a big sunshade (or buy a sunshade to attach) to shield your little one from the sun’s harmful rays. A wide-brim hat is a good idea too, if baby will keep it on. Starting the routine of having your child wear a hat as an infant gives you a greater chance of getting your toddler and older child to always wear a hat outside.

Sun protective clothing (aka UPF), such as long-sleeve shirts and pants, are ideal since a baby’s delicate skin can burn through many fabrics. They come in a variety of price points so there is no excuse. There are plenty of ways to obtain the perfect pout, but one of the quickest is to add just a drop of peppermint oil to your lipgloss.

To brighten your hair and get that glowing shine, take two tea bags (chamomile for blondes, rooibos for redheads, or black tea for brunettes), and two cups of water. Steep the tea bags in boiling water for 10 minutes, let cool, and pour over hair and rub it in. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse, and condition after.

To tighten up your pores for that smooth flawless looking skin, cucumber is your friend. Mix it with apple cider vinegar, lemon drops, or honey to immediately tighten those open pores.

Frizzy hair? Don’t fret! Mash one banana and half an avocado together and comb through dry hair. Cover hair in a plastic cap and leave mask on for 10 minutes. Rinse clean with cool water to take control of that frizz and nourish your dry strands.

Each perfume is different and doesn’t always last as long as we would hope. To make your perfume scent last longer and get your money’s worth, rub Vaseline onto your pulse points before spraying your perfume.

My nose is constantly congested; I think it is allergies. I am using an over-the-counter nose spray to help me breathe.

It works for a while, but the congestion has been going on

for weeks. Is there something else I can try?

A

It sounds to me like you have rebound congestion. This occurs when you use decongestant nose sprays for more than three to five consecutive days. Nasal sprays

contain chemicals that shrink the congested blood vessels in the nasal passages. They give quick relief but after a few days, the blood vessels don’t respond to the medication and the problem gets worse. This can continue for days, weeks, months, even years; you will sometimes hear people say they are “addicted” to their nose sprays.

First, determine if your congestion is coming from a cold or allergies. Allergies often have other symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes. Seasonal allergies are best treated with over-the-counter antihistamine pills, such as Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, and the new (formerly prescription only) Xyzal. Steroid nasal sprays are very effective and can be used long term unlike decongestant sprays. In fact, they often take one to two weeks to start working and are best used on a regular, preventative basis. These include Flonase and Nasacort, both previously available by prescription only.

If the cause of your congestion was a cold, you will need to end the cycle, and there’s only one permanent solution: Stop using the decongestant nasal spray. It’s probably going to take a few weeks, and the first week will be the hardest. During this time, you could try oral decongestants to get some relief or a saline nasal spray to flush out the stuffy airways. If it is too uncomfortable, contact your doctor. Some physicians may prescribe a short course of oral steroids to get you through the initial severe congestion.

In the future, remember you can use decongestant nasal sprays for relief, but for no more than three to five consecutive days and only as often as the package directions state, which is usually

The luncheon was held at Westlake Village Inn, as she spoke on the subject of domestic violence. Trish shares her testimony about being raised in an abusive home and later being in an abusive relationship. “It was a miracle that I am here today, free from all abuse,” she said. She also shared how she got out of a bad relationship and became an advocate for women and children, forming a nonprofit charity to save lives. Also, Veera Mahajan, a DV advocate, mentor, author, and Safe Passage board member, shared and signed her book called Unreported, Learning to Live Free. Safe Passage has a 95% success rate in breaking the cycle of abuse by healing and empowering women and their children, enabling them to live new, safe, and productive lives. SAFETY AND FUN IN AGOURA HILLS On Saturday, May 20, the City of Agoura Hills and the Los Angeles Country Fire Department held their 6th Annual Fire Service & Public Safety Day at Fire Station 89. Attendees got to meet local firefighters while taking part in activities, events, and demonstrations.

Activities and events included operating a fire hose, seeing and meeting local CERT teams and Lost Hills sheriff station, seeing an open ambulance, and seeing fire apparatus displays and the canine search and rescue teams.

Demonstrations included the vehicle extrication demonstration, a helicopter flyover, and sidewalk CPR. The 10th Annual Concorso Ferrari on Colorado Boulevard in Old Town Pasadena was a huge success. The event was produced by the Ferrari Club of America (FCA) Southwest Region, and Ferrari enthusiasts from all over California attended to share their passion for all things Ferrari. And as is the tradition, the event was incredible.

If you are familiar with the FCA Southwest Region, you know that the club members are some of the most passionate car enthusiasts on the planet. When it comes to Ferrari, this club may just be the most passionate.

It is no small task to organize an event of this scope and grandeur. Closing down Colorado Boulevard for a day and having over 150 Ferraris on display is... outstanding. The event was free to all spectators, and tens of thousands spectators attend annually.

All of the local businesses and stakeholders have embraced the event as it drives so much excitement into Old Town. People literally come from all over the United States and even from around the world for this one-day show. It is not often that you get to see over 150 Ferraris parked together. And then, of course, there are the other exotic cars that are parked all around Colorado Boulevard from others attending the show.

The cars this year were of the highest caliber. Vintage, classic, and late-model Ferraris were on display. With four Ferrari F40 Supercars on display, it was quite a statement. Late-model, limited-edition Ferraris stole the show. It was truly the best of the best. This annual Ferrari Concorso only gets better each year. Well done FCA Southwest Region and Pasadena. n

Recently, we found out that they also have some of the tastiest salads around! Rosti offers over 15 farm-fresh salads with produce sourced locally from California farms.

The vast array of choices include traditional Italian flavors, hearty salads packed with grilled chicken and fish, and innovative flavor combinations of dried fruits, nuts, and cheeses. Three summer favorites include the arugula and fig salad, seared ahi tuna salad, and the grilled chicken and pear salad.

The arugula and fig is a mix of arugula, toasted hazelnuts, endive, caramelized onion, and goat cheese drizzled with honey balsamic dressing. CALABASAS FINE ARTS FESTIVAL On May 6 and 7, the 20th Annual Calabasas Fine Arts Festival took place at the Commons at Calabasas and the Calabasas Civic Center. Over 150 painters, jewelers, potters, sculptors, photographers, glass artists, woodworkers, and more came out to showcase their beautiful works. Fine dining restaurants, gourmet food trucks, and live musical performances complimented this wonderful weekend with the arts.

As a sub-committee of the Calabasas Parks, Recreation & Education Commission, the Arts Council serves as a creative force developing cultural art events for the beautiful City of Calabasas. Headed by Commissioner Laureen Morick, the Arts Council is guided by the philosophy that participation in the Arts enhances people’s lives by challenging them to be more imaginative. Supercar Sunday, possibly the world’s longest-running weekly car show, is in full swing. Hosted at the Westfield Promenade in Woodland Hills, Supercar Sunday has become the place to be on a Sunday morning.

Car enthusiasts from all over the world attend this amazing show as well as celebrities, politicians, and iconic industry leaders. Then, of course, there are the parents that bring their kids to celebrate birthdays and to see the rarest and most exotic of cars on the planet.

As has been the tradition for almost 17 years, the show is absolutely free to the community. And you will see just about every type of car imaginable. From classic hot rods to race cars to 4x4s to modern sports cars, there is something for everybody. The diversity of the cars and people is what truly makes Supercar Sunday a standout. Often you hear people say that they are blown away by so many different types of cars being in one place, that there is no other event that truly covers the spectrum of the car world like Supercar Sunday. You never know who or what is going to pull into the parking lot and that is part of the fun.

At Supercar Sunday, they also have Marque Days that feature certain makes and models. A few of the favorites are Porsche Day, Ferrari Day, Lamborghini Day, and Hot Rod Day. On these days, there are special parking areas for the featured marque and there is always an incredible showing. KW RED DAY Keller Williams Calabasas associates chose to “Give Where They Live” as part of RED Day, Keller Williams’ annual day of service on Thursday, May 11, dedicated to renewing, energizing, and donating to local communities. OR AMI AND FOOD FORWARD Congregation Or Ami in Calabasas has partnered with Food Forward to help fight hunger in Southern California. As part of their social justice commitment, the synagogue created a “Buy a Truck to End Hunger” campaign. The new truck, dedicated on May 12, 2017, will serve 97,000 people each month and recover six million pounds of produce annually. Rabbi Paul Kipnes reported that the opportunity to do something tangible to help others energized the Or Ami community, including 13-yearold Sarah Steinhauer. “She asked if she could participate by donating a portion of her Bat Mitzvah money,” said Rabbi Kipnes. Food Forward rescues fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste from backyard fruit trees and farmers markets and donates 100% of the produce to hunger relief agencies across eight counties. Congregation Or Ami has dedicated this year to learning about and fighting the causes of homelessness and food insecurity.

SAFE PASSAGE MOTHER’S DAY EVENT On May 7, Safe Passage held its 5th Annual Mother’s Day Brunch, themed Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The event was held at the CBS Center in Studio City from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The day was spent honoring and celebrating the beauty and courage of mothers, women, program graduates, and luminaries who have provided wonderful support for their passionate cause. Special homage was paid to Audrey Hepburn and her legacy of style, talent, and philanthropy. The brunch consisted of a red-carpet reception, buffet brunch, live entertainment, and a silent auction. Safepassageheals.org, a 501©3 nonprofit organization, is dedicated to healing the broken lives of women and children, victims of domestic violence and abuse.
