he warmer months have arrived, which means it’s time to relax. Whether you’re taking a vacation or a staycation or spending time with the family at home, we make it easy for you to fill your days and keep the kids happy. In this issue, we feature our Summer Fun Parent’s Guide, a guide that lists many activities your kids can partake in for a day, a week, or more. From dance to surfing, tennis to gymnastics, we have something for everyone.

In addition, we focus on beauty and are excited to present our new beauty sections, Hello Beautiful and Beautyology. Is your hair in need of some extra TLC? Do you need to get your teeth whitened? You can find all types of beauty services in Hello Beautiful, which highlights local businesses for their services that are bound to magnify your natural beauty. Our Beautyology section features local retailers and their products that are sure to get your skin looking its best and your lashes coated beautifully. We also feature our favorite beauty tips to help make your life easier.

For instance, did you know strawberries can diminish sun spots? We have you covered.

We interviewed local men asking them, “What makes a woman beautiful?” and welcomed good insight on what men are truly thinking and looking for in their significant others. Our beauty section is there to complement their answers, of course!

In case you missed it, The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools held The Event, where over 1,000 guests wined, dined, and danced to raise money for our local schools. With an exciting live auction and amazing live performance, The Event was a night to remember.

T

he Altmann family of Calabasas has been in the area for 15 years. From business to pleasure and recreation, Phil Altmann, his wife, Dr. Tanya Altmann, and their three boys have each found a unique niche in the community, and for all of them, life in Calabasas has become everything they could have ever hoped for.

The Altmann family resides in the beautiful Mountain Park development, with its quiet streets and breathtaking views. Right off Mulholland Drive, in the scenic hills of Calabasas, this community is safe, clean, and definitely family-friendly. With deer and other wildlife known to roam the streets, the neighborhood reminds matriarch Tanya of her neighborhood growing up. “I can let my kids walk or ride bikes to play with other children in our neighborhood, like we did growing up,” she says. With neighborhood basketball courts for the three boys and gorgeous hiking trails, Mountain Park is an ideal setting to raise a family.

Phil and Tanya, both Los Angeles natives, met through UCLA. Phil was in his last year of law school and Tanya was finishing medical school and starting her internship and residency. They started dating and soon married. Phil had been working in the business and legal affairs for a local motion picture production company in Santa Monica and Tanya had set her sights on a new and innovative kind of pediatric healthcare business. In search of the perfect environment to start Tanya’s budding business, the couple discovered Calabasas.

Today, Phil works in business and legal affairs at Universal Pictures. He is also a master at the barbecue, and the family sings Phil’s culinary praises. Tanya brags, “Our favorite meals are when Phil barbecues in the backyard.” While he isn’t wowing his family with his grilling skills, Phil loves to support his boys at their sporting events. Phil is also a diehard UCLA sports fan. He and his father, Charles, have had season tickets since UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion opened in 1965. Phil’s family has a rich and storied history. The recently released film Woman in Gold

chronicles the inspiring account of his grandmother, Maria Altmann, played in the movie by the talented Helen Mirren.

Tanya is an incredibly integral part of the Calabasas community.

Through her inventive pediatric-care model, “Dr. Tanya” is able to get to know the community and its residents through personal home visits and deep research into current educational trends. Dr. Tanya spends quality time getting to know each of her little patients and their families, so that when she is needed, she doesn’t have to waste time with an impersonal chart or filing system. From sicknesses to recommendations for specialists, Dr. Tanya is accessible and invaluable to her patients at every step of their development.

Dr. Tanya’s involvement does not stop at physical health; she is completely connected to every aspect of a child’s well-being.

Up-to-date on schools in the area, modern technology, and new parenting techniques to name a few, Dr. Tanya is committed to the success of her patients. “Calabasas families really value good nutrition, exercise, and education,” she notes. “These are lifestyle habits that I emphasize in my practice and feel are critical to raising a happy, healthy, successful child.” Dr. Tanya has also written and edited four parenting books, three of which were best sellers. She is regularly featured on national and local TV for her groundbreaking work in pediatrics and child development. Dr. Tanya says, “I am a child health and parenting expert for KTLA 5 Morning News and have discussed breaking medical news stories and controversial parenting topics for numerous national and local news programs and TV shows.” All this, in addition to her work as a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, makes Dr. Tanya a very busy woman.

are also budding musicians. Avrick plays the piano and sings in the choir while Collen plays the trumpet. Collen also blows the shofar for the local temple for High Holiday service, which is a big honor in the Jewish community. Older brother Avrick is also quite the intellectual. He loves math and reading and is even able to recite the first 90 digits of pi! Youngest brother Maxton, 2-years-old in January, loves to follow his big brothers around, watching them play sports and music. Maxton seems to be especially inclined toward basketball. He loves to throw balls through anything resembling a basket, including the toilet bowl!

The two older boys, Avrick, 11, and Collen, 9, are both enrolled in Viewpoint, a prestigious local school, where they enjoy their studies as well as extracurricular activities. They are both active in Calabasas basketball and West Valley Youth Soccer and

KIDS AND THE ARTS HAVE AN

Alliance with Angels

On April 14, the Angels of the Alliance held their 17th Annual Angels Luncheon, a fundraiser to promote the Kids and the Arts program. The event was held at the Westlake Hyatt Hotel and featured a silent auction, boutique shopping, live entertainment, and the table-judging competition. This year, five beautifully decorated tables were honored as winners, with a three-way tie for second place. Kim Maselli received the first place award for her table which was themed “Finding Neverland.�

The live entertainment was hosted by Debi Lewis Vocal Studio and showcased three young and gifted singers: 12-year-old Emily Salzman, 12-year-old Grace Zeolla, and 10-year-old Marrisa Margolis. While guests enjoyed their day filled with great designer boutiques, and local talent, the true enjoyment comes in knowing that this event sends 5,000 children to the Civic Arts Plaza during the 2016/2017 season to experience the excitement and joy of live theater.

3rd Annual White & Black Party

TO BENEFIT BAY LAUREL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Parents and friends came together on June 4 to host a great party at the home of The Oaks resident Nisa Zap in Calabasas. This fabulous event was the scene of a great fundraising party where all proceeds were donated to the Bay Laurel Elementary School in Calabasas. The event was organized by a dedicated group of Bay Laurel moms who were instrumental in raising over $10,000 for this fundraising event. Organizers included Nisa Zap, Laura Klapper, Missy Improta, Laura Garbell, Julie Tesser, Michele Scher, Mariam Brown, Galia Pistotnik, Elisa Della Ripa, Gina Weisberg, Jodi Stiegemeyer, Erica Justis, and Sarah Anderson. Everyone enjoyed a great night of food, drinks, music, dancing, and friendship. Bay Laurel Elementary, home of the Dolphins, places an emphasis on celebrating students for exemplifying positive character traits that each mom also embraces.

Casa Pacifica

ANGELS WINE, FOOD, & BREW FESTIVAL Photography by Debbie Vaccarello The Casa Pacifica Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival was held on June 5 at the beautiful California State University Channel Islands campus in Camarillo. Voted both “Best Charity Event” and “Best Food & Drink Festival” of Ventura County four years in a row, this event lets guests enjoy gourmet food, award-winning wines, and craft brews from local breweries. This year’s entertainment included live music, the largest silent auction in Ventura County, and The Yummies Culinary Competition, pitting executive chefs from local restaurants against each other, with a winner determined by celebrity judges.The amazing music this year featured Ventura County’s favorite D.J., Bruce Barios at the main stage, along with singer Chris Lomeli, magician Shawn McMaster, and local favorite band Sound Effect in VIP. All proceeds benefit Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families, which provides hope and help for abused, neglected, or at-risk children and their families in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

PROMENADE TEA AT THE FOUR SEASONS

Photography by Curtis Dahl The San Fernando Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. held its 59th annual Promenade Luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village on May 22, 2016. During the celebration young ladies or “Ticktockers” in grades seven through 12 were honored for completing the current year with NCL. The afternoon began with the 2016 Modelette Fashion Show in which the 10th grade class modeled fashions from Billy’s, REMIX, Soto, and Val Surf. Additionally, mother/daughter teams were recognized for their 50 to 100 hours of service. Graduate Emily Rabin was awarded the Merci Award for volunteering the highest number of philanthropic service hours this past year: 631.5 hours. Emily was also awarded the Nancy Prusas Senior Service Award for volunteering 1,044.25 hours during all her years in the NCL. In total, the Patronesses and Ticktockers of NCL San Fernando Valley Chapter volunteered over 12,160 service hours in our local communities.

On June 13, golfers had the opportunity to win incredible prizes while playing for a good cause during the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley’s 7th Annual Golf Tournament held at the North Ranch Country Club. Lexus of Thousand Oaks and Lexus Champions for Charity partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs and provided three Lexus vehicles as the hole-in-one opportunities. In addition, Lexus Champions for Charity donated to the Boys & Girls Club Live Auction two playing spots to their National Championship this December for a 54-hole event over three days of play at Pebble Beach Resorts plus a room accommodation for four nights at either The Inn at Spanish Bay or The Lodge at Pebble Beach for a $8,000 value. Seven Days to Sexy

he truth is you’re probably already sexy, because that’s how you’re made. But who doesn’t want to be more irresistible? There are some physical attributes that are inherently sexy that you can capitalize on quickly, such as hair, skin, lips, and attire. And then there’s attitude. Here is a woman’s dayby-day guide to bringing out the sexy.

half the time gazing at her mouth. If she has applied lipstick, he will find it difficult to look away. A dash of pink holds his attention for 6.7 seconds, and red keeps him fixated for 7.3 seconds! So, there you have it: It’s lips before eyes. Consider Juvederm® injections to evert the lips and provide a fuller pout. When done artfully, the lips can be enhanced without looking unnatural. In order to provide time for swelling to subside, this procedure should be done on Day 1.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my favorite injectable, Botox® , that can provide a little lift to the arch of the brow, taking your look from ordinary to bombshell. Day 2 is the day to do a “chemical brow lift” with Botox and to smooth out other lines in the upper face at the same time. It takes about three to five days to take effect, so Day 2 is perfect timing.

DAY 3 Choose your outfit. Be aware of the red dress effect: According to numerous studies, men find women in red shirts or dresses, and even in front of a red background, more attractive than the same women wearing different colors. According to Wikipedia, “the red dress effect is a phenomenon in which people wearing red clothing, such as a red dress, are perceived to be more sexually appealing than they are when wearing other colours. This effect is thought to act subconsciously, although its effect can be large.” Also, consider wearing heels to give your legs an elongated appearance and slightly arch your back so your waist looks smaller. Studies show that the most appealing waist-to-hip ratio is 0.7, where the waist is 70 percent of the circumference of the hips. This is probably the reason behind the corset craze that was popularized by Kim Kardashian. Ann Chery® , a popular waist-training corset brand, is best used for a few hours a day and not while exercising. If you can, accentuate your waist.

Regardless of what size or shape you are, decide which of your features are your best, and highlight them, but not all at once.

DAY 4 Studies show that a big smile with white teeth is extremely attractive. The condition of your teeth is a sign of your health.

Visit your favorite dental professional and ask about teeth whitening. Another option I have found effective and used myself is Dr. George’s Dental White system, available online at Amazon or drgeorges. com. Just a few treatments with this gel will brighten your teeth and enhance your megawatt smile.

DAY 5 How do you get sexier hair? Healthy, freshly blown-out hair, in and of itself, makes you feel more confident. Try Dry Bar or your favorite salon. You might toss your hair around more suggestively when it is “done.” Sexy hair can be long, short, in an up-do, or in long layers, but it needs to be shiny, not brittle or dry, and not too fixed with spray.

I recommend either Kerastase® or, better yet, the Olaplex® conditioning systems to restore a healthy shine. If your hair is damaged or shorter, consider hair extensions.

Christie Brinkley swears by them and even has her own line, called Hair2Wear® . If you are blonde, get a few platinum highlights. If you are brunette, go a bit darker. Make a sexy statement with your hair. Get noticed.

DAY 6 Skin, being my favorite subject and the largest organ in the body, is important. Of course, clear skin is attractive, but most importantly, it allows you to be confident.

Don’t let one or two pimples make you feel sheepish. At our office, we provide Kenalog injections to reduce these monsters quickly, and we carry a cream that can nip breakouts in the bud. Besides that, our aestheticians offer red-carpet, no-downtime facials that can have you ready to be your sexiest self. When applying makeup, try a little high color in the cheeks to mimic a flush. DAY 7 The assignments for Days 1 through 6 were designed to increase confidence by helping you present your best self. Do the assignments that you feel need to be done—don your dress, apply your makeup, tszuj your hair —and then, let it rip! In other words, no more fretting and fussing and reapplying or second-guessing after the fact. The single most important aspect of sexy is confidence. Sexy behaviors that exude confidence include excellent posture, crossing your legs, making eye contact for one beat longer than usual, short-but-deliberate touching of the arm during conversation, dynamism, enthusiasm, and a witty sense of humor. If there is eating involved, eat with panache and gusto. The truth is that a woman can become sexy almost instantly as she dons her persona -- that layer of character and personality that is her, only bigger. The bodacious smile, the

confident saunter, the twinkle in the eye, and an unselfconscious laugh. After all the preparation mentioned, this is the final magic ingredient. Marilyn Monroe could walk along 57th Street and go unnoticed until she decided to “turn it on.” “Shall I be her?” she would ask, and suddenly, with her voice sweetened and her special walk and giggle, droves of people would flock to her. Turn on your own unique version of Marilyn when the time is right, and voila!

You are sexy.

This article touches on some highlights— the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. We discussed lips, eyes, hair, smile, dress, and confidence. These are key features that I hope provide some tips and ideas. There are many more aspects of “sexiness“ that the scope of this article does not cover -- not to mention men, who have a completely different set of sexy attributes that can be optimized. In the spirit of this article and as the saying goes, “Always leave them wanting more …” I leave you here, in the hopes of meeting again on this subject.

To combat dry heels during these summer months, mix half a banana with a few drops of honey. Rub into your heels and wrap your feet in plastic wrap. After 10 minutes, rinse off your feet and exfoliate with a pumice stone.

Save money by creating your own toner at home to reduce the appearance of pores.

Chop up one cucumber and place it in the blender. Blend it, strain it, and mix it with two tablespoons of honey. Pour it in a tightly closed bottle and refrigerate. Then, use as needed.

To brighten, tighten, and de-puff your eyes, follow these steps.

First, steep two bags of green tea and slit open the tops. Next, stuff half a teaspoon of grated cucumber into both tea bags and place over each eye. Then, lay a bag of frozen peas on top of both eyes for 10 minutes.

Restore moisture to your hair and have fun at the same time. How? Soak your hair in beer, of course! Soak for a few minutes and rinse out with cold water. Afterwards, you’ll be hydrated externally and internally, if you have a sip too that is.

To lighten the appearance of sun spots, rub a washed strawberry on the discolored areas three times a week.

Keep the juice on for two minutes before rinsing off. Applying SPF is also key!

Many of us have pumped our mascara tube once or twice hoping to get every last bit.

Don’t do this! It actually allows air to get into the tube and makes the mascara dry out, thereby shortening the lifespan of the product.

Self-tanner is a great alternative for getting golden skin without all the damage, but sometimes it can get streaky.

To exfoliate the dead skin and lighten the streaks, wet some baking soda and rub onto your skin.

One of the worst feelings is going to take off your makeup and realizing you’re all out of makeup remover. Don’t fret; lotion is just as effective and works extremely well for taking off tough mascara.

We’re spending thousands each year on beauty products for both men and women. Now, let’s explore that world with the help of technology.

What if you could improve the quality of your skin without the expensive office visit to a dermatologist? With the app Spruce, you can. For 40 dollars, you can set up a consultation with a boardcertified dermatologist. You send in photos and basic information, and within 24 hours, you have a diagnosis and prescription. You can also check back in 30 days after the initial contact.

Got makeup on your mind but not sure how you’ll look using a certain type or shade? Take a look at ShadeScout. Using your smartphone’s front-facing camera, which uses a video feed, pick the makeup you would like to try, and voila, the color or shade will appear on the screen.

Many people walk into a hair salon with a picture of their favorite celebrity and say, “I want that haircut.” The R+Co Education app allows you to search for a haircut and tells you what products you’ll need and gives you a picture to show your stylist.

You can’t look your best without taking care of your health, and working out is often the best way to feel good about yourself. Many people can’t afford their own personal trainers, so here are some apps that will save you money and get you in shape at the same time. Sadly, though, you have to do the work yourself.

Sworkit gives you home workouts that include strength, cardio, yoga, and stretching. They show you videos that you can replicate.

Sworkit includes a number of free videos, which can be upgraded to more intense workouts for a few bucks. The videos walk you through the exercises and can be very handy without breaking the bank.

If you want to try running for health and weight loss, Spotify can help. It’s an app that you might already be using. It will actually measure your running pace and also picks songs with the beats per minute to match. Running for most (me included) is horribly boring. If you have a home treadmill, turn on a commercial-free movie. That will kill at least an hour for you.

A Ranch Built From

a Heart of Gold

hat happens when parents become too old to properly care for their child with special needs?

What happens when parents are no longer present to help see that their child is set up for success, regardless of his or her disabilities? These were questions that weighed heavily on CEO and founder of the Golden Heart Ranch in Agoura Hills, Rose van Wier Hein.

Rose and her husband, Bill, were not expecting to have to answer these questions many years ago, until one day, their youngest son, Justin, was diagnosed with epilepsy after suffering two grand mal seizures and then deemed autistic shortly thereafter.

As one could only imagine, this family suddenly faced many difficult questions and fears. What happens now? How do you provide the best life possible under these new circumstances?

How do you keep your child safe? Although Rose and Bill were entirely grateful to raise their son, regardless of the hardships, it was tough news to accept.

When given the opportunity to travel internationally to visit a farm in the Netherlands with a similar paradigm to Golden Heart Ranch, Rose decided it would be a good opportunity to educate herself on what a future could look like for Justin. She toured the farm and met many parents and volunteers who worked there to help provide guidance and support. It was a place that felt safe, and upon her return to the States, she knew the answer to the unrelenting question of Justin’s future.

Inspired by that trip, Rose founded the Golden Heart Ranch, which is being developed here in Agoura Hills.

The Golden Heart Ranch is a nonprofit organization that will provide a setting for residential living along with programs and

events for the special needs community. The ranch’s cooking center, organic gardens, chickens, art center, and clubhouse will provide a place that encourages social skills, life skills, and opportunities for vocational training, which can lead to meaningful jobs within the broader community. It will become a hub for those living there to turn “thriving in life” from a possibility into a true outcome. The Golden Heart Ranch will provide the utmost care and support so these young adults can live peacefully and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Although many efforts have gone into trying to determine causation of autism, there have been fewer efforts made in providing housing, safe living conditions, and meaningful employment for people with autism. In the state of California, more than 90 percent of the 300,000 children living with special needs won’t be able to ever leave home. So what happens when parents are no longer able to care for their dependents?

They have to resort to out-of-home living; but many of these places do not provide young adults with enough mental stimulation and create the risk of causing isolation for them.

At Golden Heart Ranch, residents will be able to stay for their entire lives with consistent support, friendship, care, and love.

Invest in Individuality

here are two events at the beginning of the year which I find indispensable as an interior designer: High Point Market on the East Coast and the La Cienega Design Quarter’s annual Legends event on the West Coast. High Point, North Carolina, is a picturesque town that bursts into a bustling city every spring and fall as it plays host to an extensive list of showrooms exhibiting their latest collection of wares, attracting buyers from all over the world.

Attending is equivalent to placing a finger directly on the pulse of current home-design trends. There I can see finishes up close, sit in the upholstery I specify, and take in all the practical information I use to ultimately make the decisions that go into my designs.

The core of the three-day Legends gala in West Hollywood pivots around panel discussions featuring a panoply of industry celebrities and insiders hosted by top showrooms in the design district. Attending allows me to connect with colleagues and engage in the most relevant topics affecting interior design today — everything from new challenges in the industry to successful business practices and the latest design trends.

This year, the concept that was hammered home at both of these events was the importance of “one of a kind.” It reaches to the very root of why we design in the first

place: to create something comfortable that makes us happy and that is uniquely ours. While the trend in the world is making better design more accessible — something I, as an appreciator of design, cannot in good conscience be against — it also makes our sanctuaries less unique. As someone who feels best when my home is like a fingerprint, as individual and varied in collection and assembly as I am in interests, it’s more important than ever to go off the beaten path when creating a space for myself or a client.

At High Point Market, the most successful companies have adapted to this notion, understanding that the future lies in offering customization. Just a few years ago, a sofa was only available in the exact measurement in which it was originally offered, and

a server might come in only two or three finishes. At High Point Market this spring, I noticed that more and more manufacturers modified their factories to allow that same sofa to be made in a myriad of customizable dimensions. “Made to measure” now even has its own acronym: M2M! The same holds true for finishes. Many of the better manufacturers offer a wide range of finishes on a given case piece (wood as opposed to upholstery), plus almost anything the designer can dream up, with any hardware imaginable. For one particular project, we are sending wallpaper and antique mirror to be incorporated into the door panels of a buffet. Just a few years ago, this kind of customization would have been unheard of.

At Legends this year, the overt theme was “One of a Kind” — the vintage, the found, the customized…all items that no one can have but you! This is “the nugget,” the trend to remember, and what I love is that it’s a trend rooted in design with personal meaning. Collecting furnishings and accessories from our travels or the traditional places, like antique shows or the Rose Bowl Flea Market, is still as fun and relevant as ever. But the conscientious collector should add to his or her arsenal with new, amazing online resources like Chairish, Viyet, One Kings Lane, 1stdibs, and, one of my favorites, LiveAuctioneers.com, to name just a few. These resources make rooting for treasure easier than ever.

At the heart of the idea of “one of a kind” is having things that tell a story about you, and family pieces are a part of that. Heirlooms that have special meaning are opportunities to narrate your story. Accentuating a piece in an unexpected way through refinishing or nontraditional use can be both nostalgic and modern. I have a single, very baroque, sterling candlestick of my mother’s that I had made into a table lamp. Paired with a modern shade, it looks smart and sophisticated. I love it, and I think of her every time I look at it.

As an interior designer, I’ve always been an adamant proponent of that which is unique.

But I don’t know that this has ever been a more valuable refrain than it is right now, as we find ourselves swimming in a sea of readymade convenience. It’s a handiness no one can deny. It’s easy, and it’s fast! But in this

age of pick-and-click design, everyone is composing from the same limited notes, making the one-of-a-kind items we collect and curate along life’s journey more valuable than ever. There is a time and a place for off-the-rack furniture. I would balk at suggesting a really high-end couch to a family with young children, after all! But when you do find yourself making use of it, try mixing in pieces from different sources to avoid looking like one brand’s ad.

In my opinion, the most desirable and sought-after design elements are those that are individually discovered and bent to your own imagining. Having a signature style makes a home smart and personal and completely distinguishes it from a page torn out of a catalog. One-of-a-kind pieces are a great first step in accomplishing a space that is as individual as you are.

The Old Fire

Sparks a Reminder of the Power of Community

n June 4, around 4:00 p.m. on a still Saturday afternoon, a fire broke out in the hills of Calabasas. Neighbors were playing with children in pools or driving home from errands when they noticed telltale and threatening clouds of black smoke or orange flames. The Old Fire prompted evacuations of about 5,000 people from 3,700 homes in the Highlands, Adamsville, and Eddingham neighborhoods. Many Calabasas residents spent the night with friends or family, packing up the kids, family pets, and important papers.

Marcy Heider, a longtime resident in the Eddingham neighborhood, shares, “It was surreal. You look around your home and think ‘What should I take?’ I chose photos, my laptop and let the rest go. I had the most precious things with me, my husband, children, and pets. The rest could burn and I wouldn’t have cared. It was actually quite freeing.” Heider adds, “We were overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who reached out and offered

us shelter. Made my heart full. Everything we have is a gift.”

Fire stations from all over the southland sent hundreds of firefighters to battle the flames through the night, led by Calabasas Captain Steve Srott, setting up a staging area at AC Stelle and a command center at Calabasas High School.

By 2:00 a.m. Sunday, evacuation orders for many residents were lifted, although for neighborhoods and scattered ranch homes along Old Topanga Canyon Road and Topanga Canyon Boulevard, it remained in effect until midday. By sunrise on Sunday, firefighters had estimated that 516 acres of woodlands and brush had burned.

Now, all that’s left of the fire are the blackened hills surrounding Old Topanga and Mulholland Highway, hand-painted signs thanking the brave firefighters, and the lingering and noxious smell of dusky smoke mixed with the marine layer.

Thankfully, property losses were minimal because the firefighters bravely fought to keep the fires at bay.

Shari Davis and Benny Ferdman, co-founders of the arts and education organization Creative Ways, had planned to open Camp Wildcraft at the grounds of the Mountain Restoration Trust (MRT) just over a week after the fires. But the fires tore through their planned site, and much of the property was destroyed.

Much as the community gathered together to support each other through the threats of fire, the community mobilized to secure new sites for the camp at King Gillette Ranch and Peter Strauss Ranch in Agoura. On the camp’s opening day, campers created a bridge from the MRT site to the new site by drawing their favorite animals from charcoal from the burnt trees that Benny had collected from MRT. Driving by the blackened hills, we are reminded not only of the force of fire but also of the power of a community that pulls together for all kinds of challenges. Fire Captain Tim Davis shares, “It was great how the Calabasas community supported the firefighters, with one local business donating 150 bagels.”

The gratitude flows both ways. Firefighters from West Covina, Santa Fe Springs, Downey, Compton, and Vernon left a note at the Calabasas Klubhouse, which was threatened by fires burning close to a propane tank. The note read, “Thanks to your staff for opening your doors to us and your hospitality!” Not far from the Klubhouse, a banner hangs on the front fence of Calabasas High School thanking the firefighters. What could have been a major catastrophe turned out to be a reminder of the strength of community in Calabasas and beyond. n

On June 17 the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce held their 21st Annual Calabasas Wine Tasting on the grounds of the beautiful Calabasas Civic Center outdoor plaza. From 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. guests experienced the finest wines from around the world. With gourmet cuisine from local restaurants and delicious food shops such as Barone’s Pizzeria, Olive Alchemy, The Six Chow House, and Blu Jam CafÊ, live jazz music set the tone for a very relaxing and enjoyable Friday night.

The excitement continued as attendees got a glimpse at the latest runway styles from local boutiques that were showcased during a fashion show. Sponsored by Majarian Publishing and Pinkerton, the evening filled with networking, wine tasting, and food, made for a lovely event all around.

UBER CHIC SPRING FEVER — A FASHIONABLE EVENT The Uber Chic Spring Fever Fashion event produced by Jennifer Shultz Style kicked off a red carpet evening at Westlake Village Inn. Shultz partnered with owner John Notter, actress and film comedian Fran Drescher, and Susan Cassel Holland with their charity, Cancer Schmancer, a three-prong organization dedicated to saving lives through prevention, early detection, and policy change.

Their Early Detection Fran Vans offer free mammograms to low income women.

Their Detox Your Home prevention initiatives transform passive patients by teaching them how to identify and eliminate toxins in their daily lives, and Fran is instrumental in effecting policy change for health initiatives on Capitol Hill. The Uber Chic event was a fashionable celebration filled with fashion, champagne, appetizers, music, and pop-up shops featuring designer Betty Long and her gorgeous head pieces, jewelry

Located in the heart of Calabasas, the Calabasas Civic Center was transformed into a sophisticated block party under the stars to celebrate the fifth annual The Event, supporting The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools. The evening’s festivities included delicious tastings from premier, local restaurants such as Brent’s Deli, Plata, Olio e Limone, Geoffrey’s of Malibu, and to cater to the sweet tooth, Nothing Bundt Cakes, as well as local wineries and craft breweries. A new component of this year’s event included a farmto-table tasting in which dishes were created by executive chefs using donated product from local farms with the help of Tender Greens Topanga Village, Weiser Family Farms, Pedaler’s Fork, and Le Pain Quotidien. The 2016 Street Machine Nationals

The 2016 Street Machine Nationals was incredible!

Thousands of enthusiasts showed up for the horsepower-inspired weekend. Boasting over 1000 show cars and over 26,000 visitors over the weekend, it was the largest Street Machine and Muscle Car Nationals to date!

What sets this car show apart is that the enthusiasts can enter their car in the “car show” and also participate in many different driving events, including Autocross, Tire Burnout contests, Dyno contests, and an all-new Stop Box, which tests a vehicle’s acceleration and braking capabilities on a 150-foot course. At the end of the event, one car is chosen as the overall winner of the event.

“We’re thrilled to see such tremendous growth over a year with this event,” said Mike Moore, president of the Street Machine & Muscle Car Nationals event production company, Family Events. “There are many car shows on the West Coast, but none like the Street Machine & Muscle Car Nationals, which really fills the void for muscle car and street machine owners who want to put their cars to the test in driving events, like the Autocross and Stop Box, while testing their rearwheel torque and horsepower on the Dyno.”

I am traveling this summer and concerned about bringing my medications through security. Are there any restrictions I should be aware of?

You didn’t specify if you are traveling within the United States or internationally, so I will address both types of travel. First, let’s look at travel within the states. According to the TSA, patients can bring an unlimited amount of medication in tablet, capsule, or solid form as long as the medications are screened. Liquid medications in excess of 3.4 ounces are allowed in carry-on bags in “reasonable quantities for the flight,” according to the TSA website. Medical liquids do not need to be placed in a Ziploc bag, but patients should alert an agent at the screening checkpoint. Medications should be placed in both carry-on and checked bags in case you need immediate access or your baggage is delayed at your destination.

Medication rules are a little different for global travel. You should consult the specific country you are visiting for import regulations, but generally, as long as the medication is in the original prescription container, labelled with the traveler’s name, and for quantities sufficient to cover the visit, it should be allowed.

If you purchase any medication abroad to bring back with you and want to avoid delays and possible penalties when you return, the CBP website says residents are advised to take the following steps: Declare all drugs, medicine, and similar products that were purchased to a customs official upon arrival in the U.S.; carry these substances in their original containers; and present a valid prescription for each substance issued by a U.S.-licensed practitioner who is registered with, and authorized by, the DEA to prescribe the medication. You are allowed to bring in up to 50 dosage units. These rules only apply to medications purchased abroad, not your personal supply that you brought from the U.S. Before traveling abroad, you should also consult a travel pharmacist to furnish you with medications recommended by the CDC not requiring a diagnosis, such as malaria prevention, altitude sickness prevention, antibiotics for travelers’ diarrhea, and any necessary immunizations. These are all allowed to be furnished by the pharmacist without a doctor’s prescription according to SB 493, pharmacists’ expanded scope of practice.

HANDS ON HISTORY DAY To commemorate the 50 year anniversary, the Leonis Adobe Museum celebrated with a “Hands on History Day” on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Participants at “Hands on History Day” took part in activities like making tortillas, grinding corn, churning butter, making adobe bricks and corn husk dolls. There was an authentic blacksmith as well as demonstrations of wool spinning, loom weaving, historic clothing, fabric dyes and an horno oven. An authentic Wells Fargo Stagecoach was parked onsite and guests were encouraged to explore the stagecoach and take photographs.

Each year more than 20,000 visitors and children come to the Leonis Adobe to learn about life on an isolated ranch in the 1800s. Students learn about longhorn cattle, Percheron horses, goats, sheep and poultry, and see the restored and furnished adobe house, the barn and blacksmith shop as well as an assortment of farm machinery and wagons.

Transforming Food with Passion and Pride

An unlikely venture turned global food phenomenon

E

ven though the first P.F. Chang’s opened in 1993 in Scottsdale, Arizona, the story begins in the early 1960s in Chinatown, San Francisco.

Philip Chiang’s mother, Cecilia Chiang, was flourishing in the wild success of her Chinese restaurant, The Mandarin, with a menu inspired by her native Northern China – fresh vegetables, light dumplings, and rich soup broths. Her persistence helped catalyze her success. She made friends with influential people, like restaurateur Vic Bergeron of Trader Vic’s and renowned Chronicle columnist Herb Caen, who back then could either make you or break you. But it was her cooking that kept them coming back for more.

In time, and after a stellar review published by Mr. Caen, a second location was inevitable for The Mandarin. The location? Swanky Beverly Hills, where she served many socialites and celebrities, like John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Philip Chiang When Cecilia’s son, Philip, joined her in San Francisco in 1962, he worked in the restaurant and, albeit reluctantly, discovered his own love for cooking authentic Chinese dishes. Years later, when Cecilia was called to China for an extended trip, Philip stepped in to run The Mandarin. And run the restaurant he did.

Philip helped simplify some of his mother’s recipes in a way that appealed to more than just those familiar with authentic Chinese food. His recipes explored various regions of Asia through new and exciting flavor combinations. After graduating from art school, Philip decided to pursue the restaurant business and opened his own, more casual restaurant, called Mandarette.

After coming to Philip’s restaurant for years, restaurateur Paul Fleming, known for developing successful restaurant chains on the West Coast, knew he had found his next concept: Philip’s simple, upscale Chinese cuisine combined with the best of

American hospitality. With some wooing on Paul’s part, and then finally a handshake, P.F. Chang’s was born.

Years of planning had paid off, but no one expected that Paul and Philip had just laid the groundwork for a global Chinese food phenomenon.

Unlike other restaurants, the food at P.F. Chang’s is made from scratch. Their kitchens are run by chefs who hand roll dim sum, hand slice meat, hand chop vegetables, and hand roll sushi every day.

The pantry is stocked with only all-natural meat and responsibly sourced seafood. Even the sauces are made from scratch.

The Vision

An extensive wine list and expertly crafted cocktail menu complement the bold flavors at P.F. Chang’s. Guests can enjoy “Hours Of Happy” Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (at most locations), with a menu offering $3 to $7 plates and drinks.

Paul’s vision for American hospitality came to life in a vibrant, modern bistro atmosphere with hand-painted murals and terracotta statues of horses and warriors. Each restaurant showcases a different mural that tells a story unique to each location, while the now-legendary horse statues stand guard at the entrance as a symbol of strength and as an homage to Chinese culture.

Philip’s inspiration for the menu was rooted in authentic Northernstyle Chinese wok cooking. Unique flavors and crispy textures can only be achieved using this 2,000-year-old technique that is one of the purest forms of cooking.

This event was a kickoff to celebrating their 25th anniversary and 25 years of providing support, education and hope to people with cancer and their families in our community.

34th Annual Classic Chevy Show

he 34th Annual Classic Chevy Show was an event not to be missed. This show, which was open to all makes and models, brings in a variety of classics and hot rods as well as late-model street cars.

If you are familiar with the Classic Chevy Club of Southern California, you know that there might not be a more energetic and passionate group of car owners out there.

For over a decade, the club has chosen Rancho San Antonio Boys Town as their location and as the beneficiary of the show. The proceeds donated to Rancho help provide underprivileged youth with a safe home and learning environment, helping to secure their futures. Classic Chevy Club has donated over $110,000 to Rancho! At the event, the boys from Rancho assisted with the show and provided an amazing barbeque.

This show is one of the largest car shows in the Valley and also one of the longest running. According to “Crazy Al,” a.k.a. “Big Al,” this is, in fact, the largest show around.

Beyond having a great show, the goal of Classic Chevy Club is to generate as much revenue as possible for Rancho. The club has a strong connection with Rancho and Brother John, who operates Rancho, and does its best to raise the bar each year and put on the best show possible.

With over three hundred and fifty cars on display and thousands of attendees throughout the day, it was a tremendous success.

Their charity for the evening was Cupcakes and Wishes, a nonprofit that brings happy birthday celebrations to children in pediatric hospitals. The night was a huge success and so much fun for everyone involved. They had over 250 guests.

The night consisted of a fashion show featuring real women models wearing SANE, a raffle with over 100 prizes, champagne, desserts, a DJ, and dancing. Auna Simon is the owner of SANE Boutique and saneboutique.com. It is named after her four children: Shylee, Ari, Noah, and Edan.

She specializes in personalized shopping, makeovers, special events, and private parties. She carries an assortment of special dresses, loungewear, jewelry, makeup, and vegan handbags.

RATCHET & CLANK MOVIE KICKS SOME ASTEROID AT CALABASAS PREMIERE Kids got a special treat when they got to meet the star of the 3D computer-animated science fiction action comedy, Ratchet and Clank, at the movie premiere at the Edwards Calabasas 6 located in The Commons at Calabasas. Local Calabasas resident Brad Foxhoven, CEO and Founder of Blockade Entertainment produced the film, and delighted kids by introducing them to a life-sized Ratcheter character, James Arnold Taylor – who portrayed the voice of Ratchet, and other films including the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi in several Star Wars projects. The movie was adapted from the first game of the platforming video game series of the same name.

When the galaxy comes under the threat of a nefarious space captain, Ratchet, a foolhardy lombax and his newfound ally, Clank, a pint-sized robot, join an elite squad of combatants to save the universe. Along the way, Ratchet and Clank learn valuable lessons about heroism and friendship.

RELAY FOR LIFE CALABASAS On May 14, at AE Wright Middle School, the 2015 American Cancer Society Relay for Life kicked off in full swing. Featuring gourmet food trucks, fun activities, wonderful musicians, and tons of games, this signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society had teams, sponsors, families, businesses, sports groups, schools, and more participating to “Finish the Fight” to end cancer once and for all! Each year, more than four million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives through the Relay for Life, the world’s largest and most impactful fundraising movement to end cancer for good.

With events like these, the American Cancer Society is helping save more than 500 lives a day. Top fundraiser participants included Omid Shaye, Jennifer Bercy, and Barbara Palmer. The top teams included B’cause We Care 2, Spirent, and Wellness Oncology & Hematology.

THE ANNUAL RED DAY WITH KELLER WILLIAMS: RENEW, ENERGIZE, AND DONATE On May 12, associates chose to “Give Where They Live” as part of RED Day, Keller Williams’ annual day of service, dedicated to renewing, energizing, and donating to local communities.

As part of the RED Day effort, Keller Williams Calabasas spent the day with Mountain Reserve Trust (MRT) at the Cold Creek Preserve in an effort to rid the area of debris and weeds that are harmful to the natural habitat. Investment Performance Achilles Heel

Have you made up your mind on just about everything, even before you understand the whole story? It is a normal human tendency to form opinions quickly and stick to them. For instance, when you meet someone, is your opinion of the person formed from the first impression? Or when you hear a political argument from the other side, is your mind open or closed? Are you able to concede the “good points” the other side makes or do you dismiss the whole argument? We encounter people and ideas every day, and while most of us would like to think we are open-minded, human nature makes it extremely difficult to discard our preconceived opinions. So, we almost instinctively filter out the information that doesn’t support our preconceived views, at least initially. Behavioral psychologists refer to this kind of selective thought process as “confirmation bias.”

What does this have to do with investing?

Well, when you consider that investment choices are usually guided by a thought process, it can mean everything. If that thought process is clouded by confirmation bias, you may be making important, sometimes life-changing, investment decisions with one-sided information and that can dramatically skew the big picture you need to make fully informed decisions.

Some of the more costly mistakes investors make can be attributed to confirmation bias, which often leads to poor decisions based on incomplete information.

Confirmation bias works subtly, some would say insidiously, inside the minds of investors as they seek nothing more than

to make the best possible decisions with their money. Even for those who spend as much time analyzing the cons as they do the pros of a given investment or strategy, confirmation bias tricks the mind into giving more weight or credence to the pros if there is already a preconception in favor of it. Or more overtly, it simply allows one to dismiss or discount information that doesn’t conform to beliefs. That’s a very dangerous mindset when your money is at stake. If you allow greed, fear, or bias to creep into the process; if you filter out any information that might raise a red flag; or if you focus only on information that validates an investment, a self-destructive result will surely follow.

Overcoming Confirmation Bias Overcoming confirmation bias is not as easy as you might think. It is one thing to be aware of it and even make a point of dealing with it, however it is that same bias that often prevents you from taking the necessary steps to avoid it. If you are the President of the United States and your policies seem to usually have negative results and go in the wrong direction as far as the public is concerned, you may convince yourself that you are right and the public is wrong when you only surround yourself with people who agree with you and you purge those who do not agree. Having the strength and courage to include people and advisors who have differing viewpoints in your life can cure you of confirmation bias if you are willing to examine their viewpoints with a patient, open mind.

With this disposition, you can apply a logical and deductive reasoning process relative to your own experiences and views.

This formula will lead you to a well-informed conclusion that will at least give you comfort with any eventual outcome.

Overcoming confirmation bias doesn’t mean abandoning your beliefs or even your preconceived opinions. Rather, it means recognizing how your bias could lead to making bad decisions in any aspect of life. When gathering and analyzing information, try focusing on that which doesn’t conform to your opinion or belief and try understanding why. Just be careful not to conduct biased selective research that will lead to an incomplete picture.

The best approach might involve inviting those who don’t share your opinion to give you their view without you arguing yours. Just listen and evaluate. The same can be done by reading blogs and articles by people with different views. The most important point is to work through the thought process more rationally, without fighting opposing viewpoints. Let your politics be your politics, but let your money be protected from self-destruction by eliminating confirmation bias. n
