Happy 2022! Out with the old and in with the new, as the New Year is the time for a fresh chapter or even a clean slate. January is named after the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions. At Calabasas Style, we like to come up with a list of things to do as New Year’s resolutions, rather than just things to give up. Let's start the New Year off right.

It broke my heart and put me in a funk. Then I saw a post from a friend about her second bout with cancer, and it snapped me out of my pity party immediately. Well, I may have stayed down for 24 hours, but then, I dusted myself off and tried to move on and stop dwelling on it. Although my news is still sad, I was able to put it in perspective. We all have had a roller coaster ride the past few years, and many have had to endure such hardship. I’m so impressed with the resilience and strength of our community. We all find a way to deal with life’s lemons and make our own version of lemonade to stay emotionally strong.

Hosts Susan and Ken Bauer and the Casa Pacifica Angels were excited to welcome back celebrity designer Kevan Hall, who showcased his beautiful 2021 collection in an exclusive show, and emcee Geoff Dean, former Ventura County Sheriff.

A champagne reception opened the festivities as guests perused a variety of fabulous boutiques, and a silent auction offered amazing entertainment packages,

BBSVC HOSTS 12TH ANNUAL BAGS, BLING & BUBBLY

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Gayle Barnes Big Brothers Bigs Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC) hosted its 12th Annual Bags, Bling, and Bubbly champagne luncheon, the most sparkling event of the year, on Wednesday, November 17th, at Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village.

The stylish afternoon featured an amazing array of new, designer, and vintage handbags,

experiences available for purchase or by auction, and it celebrated the mentorship of its partners and team. Funds raised allow BBSVC to continue serving youth in the community.

Lynne West, CEO of BBSVC, was the surprise honoree this year. Through the countless hours she spent building the organization, Lynne shaped youth mentoring in the BBSVC communities for 34 years. Her tireless work allowed BBSVC to provide crucial, often life-saving opportunities for youth facing adversity in Ventura County. On December 31st, Lynne retired from her role as CEO. CONGREGATION OR AMI MITZVAH DAY

____________________________________ ____________________________________ In an amazing outdoor Mitzvah Day Festival, Congregation Or Ami assembled 16,000 items into 500 comfort bags created for children who will be entering foster care. This annual event, the cornerstone of the Calabasas synagogue's commitment to Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), featured live music and inspiring volunteerism from families of all ages.

Rabbi Paul Kipnes said, "This sacred assembly line ensures that 500 young people will be greeted by love and compassion as their lives are turned upside down as they are rescued from homes of neglect and abuse to places of safety."

Co-chairs Rachel and Paul Dashevsky and Rachel Paul and Mitzvah Day originator Laurie Tragen-Boykoff worked with a team of volunteers over just six weeks to ensure that their Jewish values of chesed (kindness) and rachamim (compassion) became manifest through the sacred assembly line. “We hope these comfort bags bring peace of mind and soul to the children who receive them," added a message from the co-chairs.

HADASSAH STYLIN’ FOR BREAST CANCER FUNDRAISER ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Gayle Barnes For the past eight years, B’yachad, one of Hadassah’s Southern California groups, has held an annual breast cancer event in our area. Back in-person after an online hiatus during the pandemic, this year’s Stylin’ for Breast Cancer-themed fundraiser took place on October 27th at the home of Sheba Grobstein in Woodland Hills. Approximately 100 women attended the fundraiser organized by President Nancy Reiser and several group members.

True to theme, local members walked the pink carpet for a fashion show, with outfits provided by Jackeez & Nicolz, Athletica, and Lili Bridal. Local artist Jessica Eve painted 20 women’s breasts in support of breast cancer awareness, and one woman shared her personal story about how she found out she had breast cancer. Guests also bid in a silent auction, received gift bags, and enjoyed delicious food and beverages donated

PACIFIC FESTIVAL BALLET HOSTS SUGAR PLUM SOCIAL

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt After a hiatus last year due to the pandemic, Pacific Festival Ballet (PFB) reimagined its annual fundraiser for this year’s production of The Nutcracker, and the result was successful and thoroughly enjoyed by 175 attendees. On November 14th, Moorpark Country Club was transformed into a decadent, visually stunning journey into the Land of Sweets, complete with an icy snow scene for a Christmas party adventure.

Guests were treated to photo opportunities with Clara and friends, arts and crafts, and a mini-Nutcracker suite performed by PFB’s Pre-Pro students. The Sugar Plum Social took place both indoors and outside on the beautiful lawn, allowing guests to mingle in a safe and friendly atmosphere.

Thanks to the organizing assistance of Erika Luis, Ferrari Westlake’s marketing manager, the monthly ensemble of personally owned, fuel-powered exotics with a small mix of hybrids and full electrics were on display for locals of all ages.

Besides the dozens of Ferraris parked on the asphalt, other exotic brands were on hand for the public to drool over during September’s gathering, including

CARING CALABASAS SENIORS COLLECT BOOKS The Caring Calabasas Club of the Calabasas Senior Center partnered with Books Build Bridges to collect books that will be distributed to a variety of charities, including foster children’s centers and women’s shelters. “Books collected will be sent to Atlanta, Georgia and Africa,” said Mickie Stern, head of the book collection. During the month of September, people from across the city brought book donations, with a final count of 5,800 books collected. To celebrate their success, volunteers from the Calabasas Senior Center and Books Build Bridges held a wrap-up event on Saturday, September 25th at the Senior Center. Chaminade High School students provided musical entertainment and refreshments were served. Books Build Bridges, a nonprofit started by Chaminade student Ben Sweeney, has received over 10,000 books so far. Many books were distributed personally by Ben and his family to schools in Costa Rica.

Roasted Maple Carrots 2 pounds carrots, preferably with leafy tops Good olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper ¼ cup pure Grade A maple syrup 2/3 cup dried cranberries 2/3 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (2 oranges) 3 tablespoons sherry wine vinegar 2 garlic cloves, grated on a microplane 6 ounces baby arugula 6 ounces goat cheese, such as Montrachet, medium-diced

Herbed Garlic Bread 1-pound oval loaf French or sourdough bread, unsliced 12 tablespoons (1½ sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature ¼ cup finely chopped parsley ¼ cup finely chopped chives or green onion tops ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon dried basil ½ teaspoon dried thyme 2 medium cloves garlic, crushed 3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese Trim crusts from top and sides of bread. Cut 2-inch diagonal slices across the bread, leaving bottom intact. Cut 2-inch diagonal slices in opposite direction, forming triangles. If you appreciate any aspect of engineering or sports cars, the McLaren Senna checks every box of “wow factor.” You can’t help but look at it and know that dreams do come true and there are people out there pushing really hard to achieve exceptionalism.

The Senna, which was named after the famed and legendary Brazilian Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, is truly a race car that can be driven on the street. It would be more at home on the race track, but, why wouldn’t you drive a Hypercar everywhere you could? The Senna was offered at about a million bucks, but to get one...well, there is always demand for adjustments. And, due to the low production numbers, it is an instant collectible that will only increase in value, probably better than most stocks. The Senna is powered by a twinturbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that generates 789 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. With a zero to 60 time in the two second range and a top speed of 208 miles per hour, there is not much that can keep up with the Senna in a straight line or on a road course. And, if you are picking up a few groceries, they will look great on your passenger seat.

The Senna is a work of art that is one of the most capable cars ever produced. You cannot help but stare at it. As you walk around the car, it draws you in with its awe-inspiring design.

Las virgEnes municipal water district As a proud Southern Californian, Riki Clark developed an appreciation for the environment growing up in Rancho Cucamonga along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Showing an early desire to give back, she spent much of her free time at watershed and beach cleanups and leading a free nighttime childcare program at her high school, watching the children of teachers to give them much-earned time off.

This spirit of giving influenced and developed Riki’s current focus on public service. While honing her strength of communication by studying public relations at Cal State Fullerton, she simultaneously worked in the water industry as a public affairs intern for Monte Vista Water District.

After earning her bachelor’s degree, Riki briefly took a position in the Bay Area as the public relations specialist for the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Eager to return to the water industry, she joined Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) as a public affairs associate five months later.

ALEJANDRA ELLEN’S 50TH BIRTHDAY FOR CHARITY Alejandra Ellen celebrated her 50th birthday at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village on August 6th, though it wasn’t a typical birthday celebration. In lieu of gifts, Alejandra requested that all guests provide a donation toward some of her favorite charity foundations for children with cancer. A total of $16,000 was raised for charities, including Junior Foundation and ASAF Angels. From the donations raised, Junior Foundation was able to help 15-year-old Eliza’s Quinceanera dreams come true. Despite battling cancer from a very young age, Eliza had the day she always hoped for, wearing a blue princess dress, surrounded by family and friends, dancing, and truly enjoying time together. ASAF Angels donations went toward helping underprivileged children in third world countries learn how to play various musical instruments, including violins, pianos, and guitars. The foundation focuses on building better opportunities for children in unfortunate circumstances.

SIOCV 19TH ANNUAL MARGARITA MIXOFF Soroptimist International of Conejo Valley (SIOCV) recently held its signature annual fundraiser at Los Robles Greens Golf Course in Thousand Oaks—the 19th Annual Margarita Mixoff. Local restaurants prepared specialty margarita samples and appetizers in a friendly competition to win the title of “Best in the West” margarita and “Best Appetizer.” Nearly 200 guests in attendance selected the winners in each category by voting for their favorites. The event raised over $12,000, with money raised from a silent auction and raffle benefiting the Soroptimist Dream programs and the Service Award program. Thiamine (B-1) B-1 keeps the brain and nerves in check, prevents inflammation, encourages the flow of electrolytes, and boosts the immune system under stress.

Riboflavin (B-2) B-2 breaks down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to fuel energy and keep tissues healthy. It might even curb cataracts and migraines.

Niacin (B-3) Keeping hair, skin, and nerves in tip-top shape, niacin converts food to energy. Too much, however, can cause an array of problems, from insulin resistance to gout.

Pantothenic acid (B-5) B-5 benefits the digestive system as it helps synthesize crucial vitamins, such as coenzyme A and B-12.

xperts hypothesize that on average we each experience at least 50,000 thoughts per day swirling through our minds. Meditating for just five minutes can bring much-needed balance back into our hectic lives.

While practices, such as Transcendental Meditation, suggest we meditate for at least 20 minutes twice a day, even five minutes of focused calm can reduce anxiety and help us connect to our own inner source of healing.

What is meditation?

Meditation involves any methods that help us reach a heightened state of focused awareness. Relaxation techniques, such as meditation, increase our brains’ alpha waves, helping us feel calmer and more creative. By turning away from our usual goal-oriented minds and actions, allowing thoughts to simply wash over us without trying to control where they lead, we can achieve a deeper sense of calm.

Tap into wellbeing We can find countless ways to tap into this wakeful, relaxed state of consciousness. There are even apps, such as Headspace and Calm, that use guiding imagery and music to help us meditate.

Or we can try our own meditation. It’s as easy as observing our breathing or learning a mantra to help focus our thoughts.

For example, choose a comforting word and count down— three, two, one. Think of the word every so often as you relax with eyes shut and mind open. Never force anything, just let streams of ideas flow gently by. Practice this for at least five minutes a day or during particularly stressful moments to achieve positive results.

KEVIN CORDASCO FOUNDATION L.A. BIG 5K AND L.A. MARATHON The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow celebrated its third-year partnership with Concern Foundation at the L.A. Big 5K and L.A. Marathon on November 6th and 7th at Dodger Stadium. They had 89 5K participants, 11 Charity Challenge/half-marathon runners, and six full-marathon runners, including Cade Cordasco, who ran in honor of his brother Kevin for whom the foundation was started.

Kevin was an inspirational young man who battled neuroblastoma for seven years, a rare childhood cancer that afflicts less than 700 children annually. The team also included the Beauty Bus Foundation; Cedar Sinai’s Wellness, Resilience, and Survivorship Program; Men’s Cancer Network; Sharsheret; and AYA@USC. They collectively raised $219,000 over the two-day event.The bulk of the monies will be used to fund research projects. It will also fund pop-up beauty salons in oncology wards of L.A. hospitals throughout the year and other projects that make life better for those battling cancer.

I have prescription insurance, but I still pay so much for my medications. Why is this and why does the price seem to change every time I get a refill?

Prescription insurance has become increasingly complex.

It used to be that you had two copays: one for brand and another for generic. Now, the plans may have up to five

tiers! The lowest is preferred generics, and then comes the non-preferred generics, preferred brands, non-preferred brands, and finally, the most expensive, “specialty” drugs. Often times, the higher-tiered copays are percentage based. Therefore, whenever the manufacturer raises the cost of the medication, your copay increases. Many plans also charge you the difference between the generic and the brand name if you choose the brand-name drug when a generic is available. Adding to the complexity, many medications require a prior authorization from your insurance company before they are covered. This means your doctor needs to contact your insurance to explain why the medication is necessary compared to other medications preferred by your insurance company.

Additionally, many insurance plans no longer cover refills at retail pharmacies. They require patients to use mail-order facilities unless they opt out. They may also charge a higher copay for using a retail pharmacy.

Finally, many plans charge patients higher deductibles. Prescription deductibles are often separate from medical deductibles.

Some deductibles may start over mid-year, further increasing patients’ out-of-pocket expenses. Medicare prescription plans are even more confusing. Copays can vary by pharmacy as well. You may have a lower copay at a “preferred” pharmacy. “Preferred” doesn’t mean better; it simply means the pharmacy is being reimbursed a lower rate by the plan. Medicare copays can also vary as the year progresses. You start out with a deductible, then, once that is met, you get a flat price. Then, when you reach the “donut-hole,” you pay a lot again, and when you come out of the “donut-hole,” you pay less than you did before. Confused?

This is just a brief summary of the complexities of prescription insurance. I hope I haven’t confused you even more.

WEST VALLEY WARNER CENTER PRESENTS 100 COOKS TThe 15th Annual West Valley Food and Wine: 100 Cooks took place on Saturday, October 30th, at the Rose Goldwater Community Center at Westfield Topanga. Many notable West Valley community members and business leaders showed off their cooking skills. Serving tender meatballs, decadent cake pops, and everything in between, the cooks did not hold back.

Funds raised will assist the Chamber in the much-needed support for their business community as they recover.

WESTFIELD TOPANGA VALLEY FEST Westfield Topanga and The Village recently hosted their first official Valley Fest in partnership with the 818 Insider.

In 60,000 square feet of outdoor space, the event brought together some of the Valley's most popular hidden gems, from street food vendors, food trucks, and breweries—including Golden Road Brewing, San Fernando Brewing Company, and 8ONE8 BREWING—to artists, creators, entertainers, and so much more. The event featured over 80 local small businesses and key community stakeholders like California Highway Patrol Valley West, The Gr818ers, Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, Valley Relics Museum, 11:11 A Creative Collective, and 88.5FM Southern California. 6TH ANNUAL THE CARNIVAL FOR LAS VIRGENES SCHOOLS ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt It’s no surprise that after missing an entire year of fun, this year’s 6th Annual THE Carnival for Las Virgenes Schools was a massive success.

From October 22nd to 24th, Whizin Market Square in Agoura Hills was transformed into a colorful, energetic carnival grounds, where attendees met up with friends to enjoy thrilling rides, fun games, carnival snacks and treats, and the newest addition—a beer garden. If you were extra lucky, you might have caught a glimpse of local LVUSD supporter and actor Jamie Foxx or musician Matt Bellamy from the band Muse.

The event allows THE Foundation to raise much-needed funds to increase mental health support for the students, reduce class sizes, and help fund the district’s STEAM education initiative for all the elementary schools.

CHILD CARE RESOURCE CENTER HOLIDAY TOY AND BOOK DRIVE The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) to host a funfilled toy and book drive at Lovi’s Deli on December 9th. The CCRC’s mission is to cultivate child, family, and community well-being, and it works with sponsors and doners to provide books and toys to children in Northern Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. CCRC also believes that every child and family deserve a happy holiday and achieves this goal through its Adopt a Family project. Calabasas Chamber members generously donated toys and books, and Lovi’s Deli provided great food and drinks for all the participants. The purpose of the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce is to enhance and support its members' business success. CCRC is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and thanks everyone who helped further its goal of bringing a happy holiday to more families.

GOLDEN HEART RANCH HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL Golden Heart Ranch was happy to bring back its Halloween Carnival once again on Saturday, October 23rd. Hosted at the 22-acre property in Agoura Hills, the carnival was attended by approximately 150 guests. Attendees enjoyed sweet treats, carnival games, a magic show, and a bouncy slide. A spooky photo booth offered the perfect opportunity to create Halloween-themed memories, and those dressed for the occasion participated in a fun costume contest. Glamping combines the joy of camping, such as fresh air and nature, with the added benefits of a hotel.

A luxurious tent or RV vacation can feel like heaven on earth if you plan right. Keep it simple. Pack your airstream or RV with a few mandatory items, such as your favorite bottles of wine, a hairdryer, and cappuccino maker. 15TH ANNUAL ROSS PORTER CELEBRITY GOLF CLASSIC ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Paul Lester November 8th was the perfect day for golf as players hit the greens at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana for the 15th Annual Ross Porter Celebrity Golf Classic. Proceeds from the tournament benefitted Stillpoint Family Resources for special needs families and their assorted programs.

Retired sports announcer Ross Porter, best known for his 28-year tenure with the Dodgers, and his many local sports-celebrity friends came out to golf and meet with amateurs, including Fernando Valenzuela, Anne Meyers Drysdale, Nomar Garciaparra, Shawn Green, Jim Harrick, John Hartung, Doug Kriegel, Daron Sutton, and Roger Owens (The Dodger Peanut magician).

Ross paid an emotional tribute to Jaime Jarrin, who has headed the Spanish broadcast of Dodger games for over 64 years. A special moment was also observed in remembrance of former Dodgers’ manager Tommy Lasorda. Next year’s tournament will return to the new and improved El Caballero Country Club.
