Adopting healthier lifestyle choices or getting in shape is at the top of almost everyone’s resolution list. We’ve dedicated a large part of this issue to help you reach those goals. In our MOVE section, we list the best places to get healthy and fit. Dr. Schechter, DDS details some insights about what our mouths can tell us about heart disease. Dr. Anna Guanche tells us about laser treatments for our skin. West Hills Hospital shares its knowledge with an upcoming new speakers bureau. We also want to thank so many who gave back during the holiday season, especially the Cancer Support Community who helped so many families in need. We had a fun time meeting the Koplows for our family spotlight.

Eric and Donna Kopelow: A Recipe for Cuisine and Travel in Calabasas

C

orporate executive chef Eric Kopelow and his wife, Donna, who works for a major airline, chose Calabasas as their home 11 years ago when they relocated from northern Illinois. The Mont Calabasas residents say, “Calabasas is far enough from the city but close enough to everything, especially Malibu. We love that Calabasas is growing, but it still has the charm of a small community.”

Eric brings 30 years of culinary experience to his position as vice president and corporate executive chef at Universal Studios Hollywood. The chef oversees a culinary team of hundreds, operating kitchens and a bakery where food is prepared from scratch. “On busy days, we feed thousands of guests and really try to make their experience a positively memorable one,” Eric says. “In addition, we do on-property catering, which sets us apart from everyone, as we have a location that no one can duplicate. It is movie magic that brings the fantasy to reality. Partnering with Wolfgang Puck, our philosophy is to set the bar and have others follow behind.”

When Kopelow appeared in a television segment with Julia Child, the famed chef taught him to appreciate that every dish he makes must be the best it can be. “The most memorable comment that she had said to me was that the youth of today will set the culinary trends of tomorrow, which in fact is what has happened,” he says. Kopelow has cooked for presidents Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush earlier in his career. The chef has received accolades and awards, most recently Chef of the Year by Chef Magazine. Kopelow is finalizing his first cookbook for an expected 2014 release.

“As a chef, it is always an experience to go to a new place, to try the cuisine that a chef has mastered,” Eric says. “We have traveled all over the world and stayed in the finest of hotels, dined in many fourand five-star restaurants.” The couple’s favorite vacation spots are Las Vegas, Paris and Rome. Closer to home, the couple enjoys dining at Nobu in Malibu, Toscanova, and Pedalers Fork. When traveling internationally, the couple’s favorite restaurant is Guy Savoy in Paris.

Eric’s travels to more than 100 countries have contributed to his culinary style. He has lived in Hong Kong, Paris and New Delhi, India.

“It was truly an experience to understand the cultures and, for me, the cuisines throughout the world,” he says.

Donna says, “Having worked in the airline business for more than 25 years, I have flown to cities and countries around the globe. The opportunities to be able to see the world just make you appreciate what you really have. During the Gulf War, I volunteered to fly with the troops overseas to help protect our freedom.” She notes that living in Okinawa, Japan, New York, New Jersey, San Antonio, Illinois, Seattle and Calabasas has provided her with a truly cultural experience.

During the couple’s travels, they have amassed a large collection of chef statues and artwork featuring chefs from around the globe.

Eric also collects pinball and old arcade machines. The couple are oenophiles who occasionally enjoy a glass of wine with a meal. The couple’s wine and champagne collection includes more than 800 bottles, some bottles of wine dating as far back as 1929.

The Kopelows are committed to giving back to the community.

Donna supports her husband’s charitable endeavors, has raised money for the Westlake Junior League, and participated in chamber of commerce events. The couple is involved in the Discover a Star Foundation, a Universal Studios Hollywood charity that raises money for local people in need. Eric auctions himself to “come to a home to cook a custom 10-course meal for up to 20 guests. Each course has a different wine. All the money from the auctions goes to Discover a Star.” He donates similar dinners to raise money for Covenant House California, which provides homeless kids with a place to sleep, a hot meal and counseling.

When the Kopelows first moved to Calabasas, Donna took a break from the airline to work as a sales associate and then assistant manager at M. Frederic. She shared, “I got to know the community firsthand and truly knew this was a community I would love.” The couple says, “Calabasas has everything you need within a small radius. CALABASAS THEATER TEACHER Injured in LAX Shooting

C

alabasas High School students, teachers and the local community have rallied behind the school’s popular performing arts teacher as he recovers from a shooting incident at LAX.

On Nov. 1, Calabasas High School theater teacher Brian Ludmer waited to board a flight to his friend’s wedding when he heard gunshots. As the teacher attempted to run, the LAX gunman, alleged to be Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, shot him in the leg, shattering two bones. Ludmer dropped to the ground, his eyes meeting the gunman.

The 29-year old teacher dragged himself into a closet and used his scout skills to fashion a tourniquet from his sweatshirt. He told his colleagues he had expected the worst. He peered out the closet door to find a police officer, who helped him to an ambulance.

Calabasas High School principal C.J. Foss said she spoke with Ludmer from the ambulance. Foss, Las Virgenes Unified School District Superintendent Dan Stepenosky and fellow teachers visited Ludmer at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he had undergone three surgeries.

The teacher sent a message the next day, thanking friends and family for their support and describing his ordeal.

Ludmer faces months of physical therapy but is expected to regain use of his leg. Students, fellow teachers, and the Calabasas community have supported the popular Ludmer, the technical director and stage crew teacher.

Hundreds of Calabasas High students, led by senior Greta Melendez, staged a walkout and rally Nov. 5 to support Ludmer and protest against gun violence. Calabasas mayor Fred Gaines urged students to contact lawmakers.

Foss added, “This is a teachable moment, and they want to seize the moment and make something positive and really send a message that says, ‘For this generation, this has got to stop.’ ” Foss said that Ludmer was touched by the student’s efforts.

To date, an online fundraiser dedicated to helping with Ludmer’s medical expenses has raised close to $48,000 toward the goal of $100,000. Ludmer siblings, who administrate the fundraising effort, said that any leftover funds would be donated to The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The Calabasas teacher has long been an anti-gun violence advocate, Foss said.

At this year’s Calabasas Classic 5K/10K run on Nov. 10, Team Brian was organized to raise money for the teacher.

New Year, New You 2014:LaserFocus on ourResolutions

E

very year, a good number of us resolve to get in shape and lose unwanted fat. Are there other things we might want to “lose” in this quest for self-improvement? How about losing those brown spots, wrinkles, spider veins or excess hair?

Luckily, there are lasers to rid us of those unwelcome bodily additions. The winter is the best time for these treatments, since the light cycles are shorter and the sun is less intense. Most of these treatments require avoiding the sun during the healing phase.

“I’m here to get rid of the extra Laura,” my patient said (all names have been changed).

I did a double take. “What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, it just seems like new things are popping up on me every day: tags, brown bumps, red bumps. I want them off!”

“OK. Well, we have a range of devices that address different skin issues,” I explained.

“And what about these wrinkles?” she asked. “I love Botox, but some of them on the side of my cheek just don’t go away with injections.”

“It might be time for a resurfacing procedure, such as Fraxel,” I explained.

Lasers work via a selective photothermolysis. In other words, we use lasers to target specific skin “colors” without affecting the normal surrounding tissue. Different skin structures have different colors. For example, blood vessels are red, hair is darkly pigmented as are brown spots (melanin), and clear targets (water) are targeted in resurfacing procedures, since the skin is 70% water.

What are the conditions we can treat with laser? Let’s review by condition:

BROWN THINGS Age Spots: Known in medically as “lentigos,” aka liver spots or age spots, are the direct result of aging and sun exposure. They look like giant, coalescing freckles. One will notice that there are more of them on the face, arms and upper chest left visible by shirt openings.

Unexposed areas such as the breast and buttocks usually have significantly less or no age spots.

There are numerous laser treatments to treat these spots. Almost all for unwanted pigmentation (other than topical creams) cause them to become darker for one to two weeks then peel off. For the hands, there is a Perfecta device that specifically targets individual spots.

For the entire chest, face and neck, a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments would improve the evenness of the complexion. In general, the facial skin heals the fastest and can handle more laser resurfacing or peels.

Growths: Waxy stuck-on opaque growths tend to accumulate on the scalp, trunk and sometimes the legs. These annoying traits show up around the fourth decade of life. “Seborrheic keratosis,” as it is known in dermatology, responds best to freezing, cautery or curettage rather than laser treatments. For the face, a series of resurfacing procedures with the Fraxel 1550 or a laser peel with the Fraxel 1927 can help remove these spots as well as provide other benefits that I will touch on later.

Moles: Unwanted moles are common. We are born with some, and others appear later in life, hence the cartoons of older people featuring large, hairy moles. Some may be suspicious, in which case we biopsy them. If they are simply annoying or unsightly, we remove them and then can laser the base after a few months, to remove any residual pinkness. In most cases, the site heals to the point that the owner of the mole forgets he or she had one there!

RED THINGS Spider veins: Spider veins on the face accumulate over time, particularly around the nose. Individuals with rosacea develop vessels faster and, as a result of recurrent flushing, their vessels enlarge and become more noticeable. VBeam is a vascular laser that targets red colors, therefore narrowing these vessels after a series of treatments.

Cherry angiomas: “I never noticed these things until my grandson asked me whether I had the measles,” my patient Rick said. “I looked down and saw that he’s right: I do have a ton of these red bumps!”

We discussed how the tendency to develop cherry angiomas, or “red moles” is pretty common. Some have a few; some have many. Smaller ones tend to grow over time. The VBeam laser may get rid of these, but simple electrocautery works as well. We chose about 30 of the largest, most noticeable ones, and two sessions later, Rick didn’t look sick.

Scars: Individuals with youth on their side (teenagers, that is) have a robust healing response. Even when we clear acne or heal a cut, the red marks often stay behind, marring the complexion. A few treatments with VBeam accelerate the healing process and reduce redness dramatically. The complexion then looks more even, improving confidence.

WRINKLES Ah, the bane of our existence. Wrinkles show up as we lose elasticity in the skin. We are most “elastic” just before birth, and our elastin production decreases steadily until (you guessed it) age 40. We have no magic pill to restore elastin production. We can, however induce collagen production, which is our skin’s major protein. The Fraxel 1550 laser is a series of treatments that smooth lines, and retextures and reduces pigmentation. The Fraxel 1927 is a laser peel that mostly addresses pigmentation and fine lines. Both laser procedures resurface and induce new collagen with the healing process to complement what we can do with Botox and fillers.

UNWANTED HAIR At all ages, hair can be an issue. For ladies, shaving legs and bikini lines wastes time and water. Facial hair can be embarrassing and frustrating, as removal methods (plucking, shaving, waxing) are irritating and must be repeated indefinitely. They also frequently cause ingrown hairs. Hormonal changes in women can cause chin hair to become coarser and more relentless. For men, hair growth on the neck is often what speeds up the timing between visits to the hairdresser. Hormonal changes in men often lead to a decrease of scalp hair and increase in back and shoulder hair. GentleLase is a 755 nm laser that targets the base of the hair and, within six to eight treatments, can significantly reduce if not remove this unwanted hair.

Nature plays tricks on us, but we have the equipment and methods to make these issues more tolerable. Whether it be excess hair, “extra Laura” or “measly Rick,” we are able to improve or remove these unwelcomed new features. Lasers can be your friend as you resolve to look better and feel better this year. ment points to accentuate and enhance the body’s curves. In the tradition of the great couturiers in Paris and Milan, this Westlake Village couturier starts with a sample bodice and corset of toile to enable the perfect fit before the actual fabrics and laces are used. Imported from Italy, France, Britain and the Netherlands, the latest trend materials are released ahead of U.S. retail by at least two seasons. Changes are made to fit and style until the client is pleased with the result. Once the gown is constructed based on the sample fitting, the garment is fitted again for fine-detail adjustment. Despite a minimum of three fittings and five consultations before release, the turnaround time for the couture dresses is quick because design, pattern and first sample through production are done in house. The gowns and dresses are not outsourced to overseas production. This maintains quality control and pristine design not seen elsewhere.

Brides in search of the perfect gown should plan to visit Cerise Charline between six and eight months before the wedding day to accommodate choices of dress, sample, fitting and production schedule. At the one-hour initial appointment, Cerise Charline will work with the bride to find the gown that complements the wedding style, and the bride’s body and personality. Cerise Charline

designs wedding gowns with a variety of bodice and skirt styles. If the bride chooses a design offered in the showroom, fittings will be held two months before the wedding date. Can tell you about heart disease

inally, there is great news about a visit to the dentist! While new and extensive research has linked dental disease to such problems as heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease, there now is conclusive scientific evidence that people with gum (periodontal) disease are more likely to have heart disease than those with healthy gums.

Heart disease claims 600,000 lives annually, making it America’s number one killer. The connection between heart disease and bad gums is straightforward: The mouth is a pathway to the body, and bacteria from infected gums can cause inflammation, attach to blood vessels and increase clot formation. Clots subsequently decrease the blood flow to the heart, thereby causing elevated blood pressure and increasing the risk of a heart attack.

We strongly believe that this unfortunate scenario can easily be diagnosed and prevented with regular dental care.

Additional studies, recently published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, have also shown that gum disease may be linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers analyzed brain samples from people with Alzheimer’s and found gum-disease-related bacteria in 40% of the brain samples. No such bacteria were found in the brain samples from people without Alzheimer’s. The rationale for the link suggests that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain, where it can potentially lead to brain-tissue degeneration that appears similar to Alzheimer’s disease -- a grim possibility that once again can be easily diagnosed and averted with proper dental care.

A growing body of research further correlates periodontal bacteria to pancreatic cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, miscarriages, pre-term births and related birth defects, and systemic complications with diabetes, strokes and hypertension.

Because of prevalent gum disease, many people believe that bleeding gums or even occasional “doggy breath” is normal. Unfortunately, these signs can signal the presence of infection that, if left untreated, can lead to possible systemic complications and potential loss of bone and gum tissue in the mouth.

The most exciting news for patients concerned about gum disease is that we now have technology in the dental office to screen and diagnose the presence of gum disease with fairly high accuracy. The test involves a saliva swab in the office, which is then analyzed for bacteria. Once confirmed, the dentist can prescribe appropriate medication to eradicate the bacteria.

Subsequently, the dental hygienist can remove the infectious plaque and treat the affected tissues with antimicrobial rinses.

After the dentist addresses and treats periodontal disease, a consistent inhome preventive-care routine will be required. This could include the use of an oral irrigator (such as Waterpik), twice-daily brushings, use of a recommended oral rinse and a diet rich in Vitamins A & C. Partnering with your dentist and routine dental examinations will greatly aid in managing and preventing any future periodontal disease.

We have much to celebrate with our dental patients. We now have the science and technology available to diagnose and treat periodontal disease, thereby preventing future health complications. A visit to the dentist now can mean a substantial contribution to your future well being, and that’s news worth celebrating!

So what is this destructive gum disease? How does it form? How do we diagnose it, and how do we banish this microbial enemy from our mouths and bodies?

By Beth Cone Kramer ob Wilmes’ lifelong career in aerospace is the ultimate representation of American ingenuity and innovation. The capstone of his career was working on NASA’s Space Shuttle program. His more than 30-year career enabled him and his team of engineers to make history as they developed systems responsible for taking astronauts to and from space to conduct research, undergo space walks and build the International Space Station.

“My dad actually was working as an aerospace engineer on Apollo 11 when we landed on the moon,” Wilmes’ daughter, Joyce Wilmes Reitz, said. “On the space shuttle, he worked mostly on tiles that ensured the shuttle wouldn’t burn up upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.”

Today, Wilmes is unable to remember much of the history he helped shape. In 2007, his family

began to notice that memory loss was disrupting his daily life. Shorty after, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s – a disease that, according to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, affects nearly six million Americans.

Later that year, he moved to Silverado Calabasas Memory Care Community and has continued to live a full life and enjoy the things that were important to him before his diagnosis. Recently, the Silverado staff arranged for Wilmes to visit the California Science Center and experience the Space Shuttle Endeavor exhibit, giving him a glimpse into his past and making a connection to one of his greatest moments. Wilmes’ three daughters and Silverado staff joined him.

“Since Dad has Alzheimer’s, our hope was that the visit would help jump-start some of his memories, and I could tell when he was focusing on the shuttle that there was a glimmer

of recognition there,” Wilmes Reitz said. “It’s such an amazing life’s work for him, and I feel really proud that I could be a part of it.”

Hundreds of Supercars Gathered for the

Motor 4 Toys Car Show Some of the most powerful and desirable cars ever made gathered in Woodland Hills for the 10th Annual Motor 4 Toys car show. Ferraris, classic American Muscle cars, modern racers, lifted trucks and just about everything in between was featured.

Car enthusiasts and the general public were admitted with a donation of at least one new unwrapped toy for the less fortunate to be distributed by charities like Spark of Love during the holiday season. The Motor 4 Toys car show has been organized each year by Dustin Troyan and it is one of largest toys donation events in the motoring industry. Why A Basic Will

IS NOT ENOUGH

T

here are many basic tools from which you can construct your estate plan, including wills, life insurance policies, and trusts. It is important to discuss this subject with your investment, tax and legal advisors because the application of these tools can be complex.

Wills are not only for the wealthy. Properly executed wills are the foundation of most solid estate plans because they designate how and to whom your property will be distributed. If you do not have a will, you give up your right to distribute your property as you wish.

Wills are the primary documents for transferring wealth upon death. If you die without one, state law controls the disposition of your property. In addition, without a will, settling most estates can be more troublesome -- and more costly -- for beneficiaries. Assets owned jointly or that have beneficiary designations, such as life insurance, annuities, transfer-on-

death accounts and retirement accounts, are not controlled by your will. However, they are included in your taxable estate for calculation of any applicable estate taxes due upon death.

The alternative would be that you create a trust document to provide a foundation upon which to build a solid predetermined structure for estate management, transference and disposal following death. This trust document method may be less costly, private, more organized, more tax efficient and better protect beneficiaries.

THREE MAJOR PROVISIONS THAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN A WILL: 1. Guardian for your children. A will should name a guardian for minor children in the event that you, your spouse or those that support them should die. Selecting a guardian requires careful thought; be sure the person

you elect is willing and able to accept this responsibility.

2. Creation of specific trusts. A will directs the disposition of your estate. To accomplish longer-term goals, such as funding a child’s education and/or his/her special needs or providing for elderly parents, you may need to include instructions for the creation of trusts at your death.

3. Naming an Executor. Your executor is your personal representative after your death. He or she has several major responsibilities, including: administering the estate and distributing assets to beneficiaries, making certain tax decisions, paying debts/expenses of your estate, ensuring all life insurance and retirement plan benefits are received, and filing necessary tax returns and paying appropriate federal and state taxes.

People often think they can use a “do-ityourself” will. Estate, probate, and tax laws are complicated and, in most cases, only a

Financial Brief lawyer experienced in these areas knows how to use the legal terminology designed to protect you and your interests. You should work with your attorney to develop a will that can protect you effectively.

6. Your will may not control all your property (such as properties with joint-tenancy titles and account-beneficiary designations).

7. Your will could be contested or easily and publicly challenged.

BE SURE TO REVIEW YOUR WILL PERIODICALLY. IT MAY NEED REVISING IF: 1. You move to a different state; 2. Your financial situation changes; 3. You add another dependent, such as a child or aging parent; 4. You make a change in your life insurance; 5. Your heirs change marital status, have children, or die; 6. Your guardianship plans change; 7. You acquire property in another state; 8. You inherit or purchase property; 9. Your property increases substantially in value; 10. There are changes to current tax laws.

To change a current will, consult with a lawyer. A new will must be executed or an amendment must be placed. It is not advisable to change your will by writing in or crossing out something. Changes made in this manner are meaningless and may even void the entire will.

WHY A BASIC WILL IS NOT ENOUGH: A will can be a good foundation for your estate plan because it outlines your wishes. It directs the disposition of personal belongings after you die and lets you designate a guardian for your younger or specialneeds children. But a will does little to address how taxes affect your estate or how the courts will view your estate. A trust document may address some of these concerns: 1. In fact, relying on a will as your sole estate-planning tool can cost you much more than peace of mind and money. For example, if you pass away with only a will in place, your financial accounts may be frozen until the probate process is complete.

2. The probate process may be lengthy, with your assets and bequests subject to the claims of heirs and creditors. A trust document may provide some beneficiary protection.

3. Probate and estate settlement costs may decrease the size of your estate.

8. Assets left to your spouse outside of trust structures are subject to federal estate tax upon your death (rates as high as 55% for assets above the current exclusion). Also, state inheritance or death taxes may apply.

9. Should you become incapacitated or incompetent, a will cannot make provisions for your care and cannot protect your assets from others who may wish to take advantage of your unfortunate situation.

10. A will is better than no document if properly drawn by an attorney.

New for 2014, a Technology Bra.

e start 2014, as always, with great hopes and cheer for a potential terrific new year.

As with technology, we are always looking for the next greater, faster, cooler and, hopefully, less expensive tech toy. We enter the tech cycle this year with the announcement that Microsoft is developing a new type of wonder bra.

That’s right, I said wonder bra.

Microsoft intends to bring artificial intelligence to lingerie. The bra is embedded with physiological sensors that can help monitor a woman’s heart activity and track her emotional state. It even purports to help send a warning message to a smartphone, advising women to eat better and help watch their weight/caloric intake. Since the bra is close to the heart, it would allow the device to collect electrocardiogram data. At the moment, Microsoft has no plans to manufacture it commercially, but Victoria’s Secret and its Miracle Bra had better be on the lookout for Microsoft.

A Dutch design collective is developing a sensual dress called Intimacy 2.0. As the wearer’s heartbeat increases, the dress becomes increasingly more transparent. Hey, I don’t make these stories up. I just report the news! Just be sure you don’t wear this dress to your office party.

If the items above are not practical enough, an Indonesian product designer is developing an odd-looking pair of shoes that come complete with a pair of rotary cleaners on the sole of each shoe and an LED display.

Yes, you will now be able to walk and clean your floors all at the same time. Think “Star Wars shoes.” If your alarm clock wakes up your partner,

then you might want to grab the new Lark Pro vibrating alarm bracelet. It will silently awaken you with just a vibration -- no normal clock-radio noise.

In 2013, Google announced Google Glass; it should become available this year. It’s an odd looking headset that allows you to visually get GPS directions, take pictures or video, and accept voice commands. You see what would be the equivalent of a large-screen television in the corner of your vision. It will give you information on the part of the city you are currently in. Who knows? You might even be lucky enough to get ads for the store you happen to be in at the time...if you’re just that lucky.

Lastly, if you are an athlete, check out the new socks from Heapsylon called the Sensoria Socks. Heapsylon has come up with a way to track activity as you work out. It will identify injury-prone running styles. Using a smartphone app, it will coach the runner and help reduce specific types of injuries.

Whether you want to be a technology fashionista or just someone who wants to take advantage of the best in tech, 2014 looks like it will be a banner year for cool, new stuff.

Folks , if Victoria’s Secret starts carrying the Tech Bra, some of you will be able to shop there without looking completely creepy.
