Illustration & Graphic Design
My name is Cal Heath (she/her) and I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. It was a natural fit for me to go to Art School and major in Drawing after High School. I then became fascinated by the design field and completed an Advanced Diploma in Art Craft and Design (Jewellery). In the past 5 years I’ve upskilled and achieved a Diploma of Graphic Design from TasTAFE and I’ve been freelancing in my own illustration and graphic design business called “Best in Show”.
I have a solid background in art and design and am particularly passionate about making drawings inspired by our natural environment. I’m loving using my (mostly) animal and plant drawings to create fabric designs, greeting cards and other products. I’ve been enjoying liaising with clients and working to design briefs - I love nothing better than producing beautiful design outcomes or adding my illustrations to a project to help it stand out!
The following pages show some examples of my recent Illustration work. I use an iPad and Procreate, as well the Adobe Creative Suite to produce my work. You can also see what I’ve been up to by having a look at my website ( www.calheath.com ) and Instragram ( @calewag ).

Project: Houndology
This is a picture book I wrote and illustrated. There are 14 dogs and their stories. The drawings from Houndology have also become greeting cards. “Bird Dog” and “Underdog” are examples of the front and back of 2 of the greeting cards. Also pictured is “Doggy Bag”.
HOUNDOLOGY
Illustration, Writing and Graphic Design
BIRD DOG
The slightest hint of a change in wind direction and every hair on her body stretches with anticipation. She knows when the air is playful and when it has the cheek to tickle her wings and lift her off the ground. She doesn’t need a gust or gale, just a fair weather breeze that whispers of lighter fortunes and silver linings.

UNDER DOG
She’s practiced in the art of camouflage and prefers to be overlooked when volunteers are called for. She may be considered less successful than others, but is quite content to know that she’ll remain invisible while others are being singled out. She’s not looking for attention and wishes to spend her days in the leafy shade, although her bony elbows would benefit from the charity of a soft mat.

The drawings from Houndology have also become greeting cards. Pictured on this page are “Sea Dog”, “Dog Star”, “Hang Dog” and “Dogged”. Two of the images also show the front and back of greeting cards.
As the brightest star, she sometimes feels this great responsibility as a burden, but mostly Dog Star is proud to be admired as an object of wonder and veneration. She’s honoured to bestow her great knowledge, wisdom and loving benevolence. She glows reassuringly and is ever present with you on your walk along the path.

Intelligent and sensitive, but highly strung, this sweet boy loves to please and is always the first to take the blame. If you have an important task, entrust it to Hang Dog. He’ll always do his best because he’s so worried that he’ll fail. You’ll find that his actual failures are rare, although his self-admonishment is constant. He may look guilty, but it certainly doesn’t mean that he is. He’ll even take the blame for your shortcomings.

Project: Budget Proposal for Out Bush On Country
I put this report together in Adobe InDesign using my graphic design skills, but it also required some simple illustrations. I drew the fern in Procreate and then converted it to a vector file in Adobe Illustrator.
“Our young people deserve to experience and be nurtured in our beautiful homelands. Lutruwita (Tasmania) has wild and remote places, and we have a lot to offer delivering On Country experiences. The connections, healing and validation that we are one with mother earth give us the foundations to build on something rich in culture, respect and identity and First Nations People. We have a strong community that is ready to build a best practice model for all Tasmanian young people who need it, right here in lutruwita”.
