Curatorial Statement

Presenting our third exhibition lead by two female artists - Kezia Alexandra and Imes Paskalia transforms pain and tribulation into deeply resonating works. ‘On Fragility’ ran on our website from 2 March 2021 - 6 April 2021.

Fragility and vulnerability serve as the main themes for this exhibition. Despite it being an essential part of our human condition, both concepts are often associated with weakness, shame, defencelessness and insecurity, where its negative connotation leads to dismissive attitudes toward the subject matter. In the face of mental health being a taboo topic in Indonesia, two female artists come together to engrave power in fragility through curiosity and openness. Their works engage with questions surrounding human personalities, how one deals with one’s own fragility and the depths of how much we understand it. What does it mean to be a fragile being? How can we rediscover ourselves and find strength through pain?

Guided by words and poetry, each work uncovers and brings awareness to ideas, feelings, relationships and histories as they explore the role of art as a remedy to these issues – placing fragility in the spectrum between the extraordinary and the mundane.

Mental Health in Indonesia In Indonesia, less than 1% of their total healthcare budget is used towards the treatment of mental health. More than half of the country’s psychiatrists are based in our capital city, Jakarta. The lack of resources only adds more to the stigma of mental health, even amongst our healthcare professionals. Due to the scarcity of knowledge, care and awareness surrounding the illness, studies show that 75% of Indonesians who deal with mental health experience stigma by the people around them, by the media, as well as by the government.

According to the World Health Organisation, the statistics is that someone loses their life to suicide every 40 seconds, where a total number of deaths by suicide is up to 800,000 each year. Adding transparency and openness towards these issues through art and daily conversations as a means to break the stigma, reminds those around us that whether they are going through it in silence or in the open, we are not in this alone.

It’s proof of One’s bravery.

Kezia Alexandra is a multidisciplinary artist based in Bali who likes to explore different art forms. From still to motion pictures and 2D pieces to 3D - she gathers inspiration from folklore tales, surrealism and avant-garde, fusing them into a single narrative. In this exhibition, Kezia assembles papier-mache, broken mirrors and yarn on a series of photographs. As she integrates philosophy, science and traditional beliefs throughout her work - the result is an in-depth exploration of our personalities as a product of time further constructed by factors such as our personal history, attachments and relationships.

Her work reflects on our human condition as fragile and complex beings, oscillating between our past and future self as they are both intertwined.

Imes Paskalia is an emerging artist from Jakarta whose work focuses on mental health, objectification of the female body and social issues. Using charcoal, oil and spray paint, her creation process starts with keywords developed through her psychosis, converting words that describe feelings and emotions into an abstract painting.

A translation of self-acceptance into art – her works are deeply personal to her as they are visual memories of her experiences in dealing with her mental health. Her vibrant and abstract approach in highlighting her fragile states is a form of self-acceptance that helps her progress through life. Revealing her raw and vulnerable self, Imes’ series of work for the exhibition unveils the personal conversations she has with her psychologist.

Session 1: The girl who walked into nightmares When I walked through the corridors, I am as scared as a sinner who just reconciled to the Almighty Father for forgiveness. It’s like I was being condemned by someone who is higher than me. I’ve never been fully aware of what my past and my demons have done to my body, yet the ironic thing about it is that the demons are a reflection of me. It’s been almost two years since I have this kind of addiction, of mutilating myself, because of the unpredictable moods, tragedies and conditions that I’ve endured. Only now that I am letting it out to you, I realised that is how my demons welcome me into their parades.

Session 2: I have to control it... I have to.

Why does it feel good when in the end it just makes me crumble up as I live with guilt and regret? Why does hours seem like seconds tonight? Why does everything seem so easy? Why can’t I live today?

Session 3: I know this is going to happen. I’m sorry.

There’s two things that I need to tell you.

The good news is that I’ve figured out how to improve my mood whenever I feel down. Are you proud of me? Progression, progression, progression. Baby steps. I KNEW IT! .

The bad news is that I just realized that it’s not really controlling my mood.

Instead, I’ve mainly been numbing the pain. I’m breaking again and craving to see the red all over my body. So, I did. Yes, I did. Several times since. .

Are you still proud of me? Is it still a progression? Did I break my own promises to you andothers? Did I fail you? I KNEW IT!

“I have a peculiar thought process in the way I approach my works. When most artists would do sketches or drawings, the images I portray mostly come from keywords that appear in my ‘psychosis’. From there I try to interpret my ideas and relate them to ongoing social issues.”

Session 4: The first time I met ‘G’ and he has never left my side since then.

I remember it very clearly, I was too focused on listening to your voice one time that I didn’t bother to ask for your name and you mention the word ‘German’. Something vague like that.

With his black coat and hands full of red, dripping from his arms into his fingers, he used to hug me and cover my body with his black shadow coat whilst telling me, “I won’t let you go. I’ll be here, I’ll protect you.

You’ll be okay, as long as you’re with me.”

Scary isn’t it? But why does it make me feel safe?

Session 5: The words that melt my monster.

And then SHE said, “You’re such a lovely girl with so much love around you. From all our conversations and interactions, you bring so much light to your friends and family. That shows me that you have been loving and caring towards them too. You matter and you are worthy of love. I’m always so inspired by your ability to be so loyal, caring and open. Show kindness to the part of you that may be hurting now - She needs you more than ever. The happiness that you have experienced, it is worth fighting for.”

Session 6: A confusion that triggers me all the time.

I admit that my addiction is semi-criminal so I never confessed to anyone. But I’ve never known the root and cause of all these problems. Perhaps, it turned into habits. Some sort of cortisol-like hormones that just spills out of my brain, the shortcut, to numb the pain.

Never resolved, as I’m just trying to minimize the pain inside my chest.

The anger that I ‘locked’ for myself (and always for myself) never leaves my side. There are these burning emotions, the mental pain that causes an urge to do things recklessly.

Even when I’m writing you to explain these different emotions to try to figure it out, it still seems impossible for me to.

Defining Cakravala

Terms and Conditions Shipping Policy Your artwork(s) will be shipped to your address once we have confirmed your order and payment.

Artwork(s) will be sent from various locations depending on where the artist is residing.

If you are located in Indonesia, your item will be delivered to you using JNE. Shipping cost is not included within the retail price. You will be able to choose your shipping service at check out.

If the main expedition has problems such as closing, there is a possibility that we will use another expedition. We will notify you of changes in shipping prices within 1x24 hours after changes to the expedition used For international shipping, please contact mail@cakravala.com to make a direct purchase with us.

We will choose the most suitable courier service for your country and assist you in completing the payment process.

If your payment is not received after 48 hours of purchase confirmation, your order will be cancelled.

For domestic and international orders, if you do not receive your order within 30 days after your payment and confirmation, Cakravala will refund your money in full.

The order will be deemed received if there is no confirmation of Artwork receipt within 7 (seven) days after the delivery service tracking system stating the Artwork has arrived at its delivery destination In the event that the artist is unable to make immediate delivery for any reason, we will notify you as soon as possible. Refunds of payment will be made a maximum of 48 hours after notification of late delivery Travel insurance cost is included in shipping cost.

Return Policy Cakravala is dedicated to ensuring the satisfaction of our art collectors. So, once you have received your original artwork, you have seven (7) days to decide whether or not you would like to keep, return or refund any artwork you have purchased through us. Artwork prints are eligible for return 28 days after the date you received your order.

You may return any eligible artwork provided that it is returned to the artist in its original condition and packaging.

1. Original Artwork Return Policy Once you have received your original artwork, you have seven (7) days to decide whether or not you would like to keep, return or refund your item.

We also require all returned artwork to be shipped out by the buyer within two (2) days after confirming with us that the work will be returned. *Do not ship the artwork before contacting us; please send a confirmation of your return/refund to us in advance!* If you fail to notify us within 7 days after receiving your item or you do not ship the work within 2 days of notifying us, you will not be eligible for a refund.

2. Returning Original, Undamaged Works a. Within seven (7) days of your merchandise delivery date, please email us on mail@cakravala.com and provide us with your order information and the reason for your request to return/refund. Please include the photo After the request for a return or refund is approved, you can repack the artwork. b. Please repackage artwork using the original packaging materials used by the artist. If packaging has been disposed, you will be responsible in re-purchasing packaging materials to send the artwork back to the artist in a safe condition. We also do not cover the cost of sending the artwork back to the artist including but not limited to shipping insurance. c. Send us an email on mail@cakravala.com when you have completed the return process. Please send documents such as shipping receipt, photo of repacking of artwork.

Once the artwork has safely reached the artist, we will process your return and your money will be refunded to your original source of payment in the same as your original order (minus shipping costs and international customs fees, if any) within 5-7 business days of your item return.

3. Important additional return information: Additional shipping fees may apply for international returns.

4. What if my artwork arrives in a damaged condition? a. Within seven (7) days of your merchandise delivery date, please email us on mail@cakravala.com and we will get back to you promptly. b. Do not dispose of original packaging. c. Document and take photos and videos of damaged artwork and packaging. Please email these photos to mail@cakravala.com d. The Cakravala team will contact you to discuss the next steps.
