PUBLISHER’S NO TE

CONTENTS Is it too late to say happy new year? I feel like the world just got back to work and it’s March already.

This month in CairnsLife we celebrate the great tradition of marriage. For those of us that have already taken our vows and are already on the road to salvation, we thought we would encourage the rest of the population that is considering this time honoured tradition, to take the plunge. Guys, believe it when I say the only thing on a girls mind after you pop the question is not you, but the dress, the reception, the cake, the cuisine, not to mention the invitations, the flowers, the music etc. And then there’s… who is going to marry us, who’s coming, who’s sitting next to who, who’s he going to choose as his best man (hope it’s not Roger), who’s my Bridesmaids. OMG, and you thought it was going to be a ride in the park! So enjoy the occasion, talk to some of the professionals we have featured, they will make your journey a whole lot smoother.

FOUR TYPES OF Michael & Mary MITCHELL

How long have you been married? Michael and I have been married for 37 years this April. We were married at Brothers Leagues Club in Brisbane. How did you meet? We met through our brothers. My brother Stephen and Michaels brother both played rugby league for Brothers Leagues Club and we met through them at the Sunday night “Disco”.

He keeps me grounded

Chelsea

HOLMAN

Michael

& MURPHY

We know in our heart it’s the right thing

What did you do for your first date? For our first date we “Double Dated” with my cousin and Michaels brother Wayne and went out for dinner in the city. - Mind you he never called me after that. I ran into him unexpectedly a couple of weeks later and he then asked me

How did you both meet? We met when I (Chelsea) was 15 and Michael was 17. I was actually on a date & my date knew Michael - we were introduced. About a month later I got a Myspace message from Michael and we started hanging out not long after. Chelsea, tell us how he popped the question? Michael & I have been talking about getting married for the past 12 months and I knew it was on the book for the very near future. Michael booked and planned a 2 week overseas holiday for us. I thought he might pop the question over there, but it was our last day, he hadn’t asked and we didn’t have anything special planned for that day. Little did I know – Michael planned for us to Marina Bay Sands – which is a famous building in Singapore. We were up on the viewing deck on 57th floor, absorbing the view of Singapore, I turned around and Michael was down on one knee. It was really beautiful! Do you think that there are people that judge you because of your age? Of course people will judge us. But at the end of the day

out for dinner the next Friday night. The rest is history.... What do you love about each other? Mary: I love his sense of humour, He keeps me grounded, and I know I can rely and depend on him totally. Michael: Always thinks of others, Never takes no for an answer and is always right. What is the best relationship advice you could give to other couples? Marriage advice is such an individual thing - what works for us, Plenty of talk, take time every day to discuss what has happened during the day, that in turn means you also need to be prepared to listen. Be supportive of one another and take your partners concerns seriously.

– we know in our heart it’s the right thing. I think we are extremely lucky to find the person we want to spend our life with at such a young age. What would you say to those people? Michael & I know that we want to spend the rest of our lives together – why wait? We already have a house together – we have been together 5 years and love each other. We have set the date so that I will be 21 when we get married. Michael, how did you know she was the one? When you just know, you know! She was my best friend and I knew I wanted to spend my life with her! When is the wedding? 12th of July this year!

What was is about each other that made you fall in love? That was the funny thing, there was no defining moment or quality about each other that we fell in love with, sometimes when you know, you just know. How did you both meet? We were meant to go on a blind date back in 2004 but I stood Rodd up! Purely by chance in 2007 the stars aligned and we bumped into each, Rodd put 2 and 2 together and realised I was the one who stood him up back in 2004. Our first date was s disaster, Rodd organised pizza on the beach and we got eaten alive by mosquitoes. We had to eat dinner in the car, in the car park! How long have you been together? 5 years

What is the hardest part of being in a relationship where you spend so much time apart? Tracy: the hardest thing for me is being lonely. I moved from WA just over two years ago so I don’t have the support group I did back home. I am getting used to it; if I keep myself busy it’s all good. I also hate how Shanne misses out on events like birthdays etc and his kids. And cuddles, I miss my cuddles. Shanne: You both get set in your little routines while your apart. When I come home from sea I certainly throw hers out of whack. As the master of a vessel my crew have do what I say with no exception, when I come home I have to remember Tracy is not crew but my girlfriend and there has to be give and take to make it work. What is the most rewarding part of being in a relationship like this? Tracy: I pick him up from the airport every time and I still get butterflies in my stomach! You don’t get that

It must upset you both that you can’t formalise your commitment to one another with marriage, how do you feel about that? It would nice if we could formalise our relationship and we are looking forward to the day that we can. Right now we are happy with our relationship and where it stands. What is your secret to a great relationship? A sense of humour is a must and being each others best friend from the beginning sets you on the right track. Be open and honest about everything, without great communication things can fall apart quickly. Having separate interests is very important, take separate holidays, do things that make you happy but don’t necessarily include your partner. You can’t always get everything you need from your partner, that’s why we have best friends and family.

when you see your partner every day, it always makes me feel like a kid and I like that in a long term, adult relationship. And of course that first “snuggle”. Shanne: I agree with Tracy’s answer. That first kiss at the airport can be like your first kiss you have when you start dating. I won’t even go in to it about that first snuggle. How do you make up for the lack of intimacy? Tracy: Oh we make up for it; don’t you worry! Obviously there are times when we can’t have what we want but we are both very open and talk about what we want. We try and have a night away when Shanne’s home and I try my best to be tentative when he’s off swing, no complaints yet! Shanne: How do we make up for the lack of intimacy? I hold the right to reserve comment. This is a family magazine is it not? What do you love most about each other? Tracy: his personality, Shanne has alluring energy and is usually the life of

the party. He’s extremely outgoing and he can always make me laugh. Shanne: it has to be her personality, she has a way of relating to people and making them feel comfortable when in her company or when talking to her. That she loves me for me and I don’t have to put on an act and try and be someone I am not (though this gets me in trouble sometimes). What tips do you have for other FIFO couples? Tracy: Be honest and respect one another. Spending six months of the year apart from your partner isn’t easy so you have to make sure you’re on the same page. Being honest often gets us in some challenging situations but at least we know what’s going on. Shanne: Respect each other, don’t sweat the little things and make the most of your time together when you are not on swing. Don’t get nervous when dropped off or picked up at the airport and make that first or last kiss a damn good one she won’t forget.

The superwoman responsible for superhuman smiles. Meet Doctor Rhonda Coyne, the Far North’s leading lady in orthodontic care. From leading touch football teams to victory, to extreme adventure racing, being a mum and partaking in the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain, Dr Coyne is not your average orthodontist. In a short period of time Rhonda has earned a reputation that precedes her. Dr Rhonda Coyne is both a highly recognised name in the professional arena and a house-hold name for the smiling community in the Far North. With three family-run practices located in Cairns, Innisfail and Atherton, Rhonda and her team at nq ortho have been granting people superhuman smiles for the past 16 years. The pursuit of picture-perfect smiles is one that has been deeply engrained in Rhonda’s roots. “My dad is an orthodontist and I actually liked having braces at school,” admits Rhonda. “My passion lies ultimately in making a difference in someone’s life. That’s when I feel I have done my job.” Outside the office Rhonda devotes her time freely and effortlessly to the community around her. Whether it is coaching the NQ Cyclones touch football team, or extending her knowledge as a clinical tutor at James Cook University. Rhonda also participates in superhuman events like the 700km expedition adventure race XPD and Kokoda Challenge to raise money for charity. The key to Rhonda’s on-going success lies in this personal pursuit for achievement and involvement within the world around her. “I want to make the world a better place while I am in it,” Rhonda says. That is what is on our mission statement: Aim to make the world a better place than it was before, simply by being in it.” Stories of achievement are the driving force of Rhonda’s work. Alongside the many awards and accolades on the walls at nq ortho, there is a small framed note from the mother of one of Rhonda’s patients that reads: I always knew my son was beautiful on the inside, now you have made him beautiful on the outside. “I try to do something every day that is nice for somebody else, whatever that may be,” says Rhonda. Rhonda’s naturally competitive edge ensures nq ortho is fitted with the latest technology and cutting-edge treatments. From customized braces where the wires are designed exclusively to fit the patient’s mouth, to Invisalign treatment where an invisible mouthguard is used to straighten teeth. It is this zest for life, devotion to the community, professional achievement and pursuit of continual improvement that sets Rhonda aside from your average orthodontist. Put simply, Rhonda is a modern-day superwoman. “I can’t do anything without an awesome team, whether it is family, work or home,” comments Rhonda. “The nq ortho team is a fantastic team that allows me to do all these things.” This perfect blend of passion, involvement and a commitment to great dental care ensures Dr Rhonda Coyne will remain the go-to gal for superhuman smiles. Practice In Paradise The promise of blue skies and warm tropical breezes found Dr Liz Chappel waving goodbye to her British life in favour of a new found paradise. From the age of six Liz knew she wanted to live in Australia. “I grew up in a town in Lincolnshire where it always seemed to rain and felt constantly cold and dark” says Liz. “I learnt about the school of the Air in a geography lesson and I recall thinking ‘What an amazing place’. There were these wide open spaces, ochre red dirt and vivid blue skies. I just felt like, yes, that’s where I want to be.” Liz first visited Australia in 1985 when she spent 8 months in Townsville before heading back to the UK to study medicine in London. After several visits to Australia Liz finally emigrated to Cairns in 2001. Whilst the tropical lifestyle can slow the pace down for some, it has accelerated Liz’s career. A general practitioner by trade, Liz owns the AppleTree Medical practices situated in Cairns, Smithfield and Palm Cove. Liz had her own practice in Lincolnshire for several years before making the move to Australia. A move which opened her eyes to a host of tropical diseases not seen in the UK such as Dengue Fever and Ross River Fever. “We used to read about them in text books, but never saw them,” says Liz. Calling Cairns home for the past 13 years Liz has completely embraced her tropical lifestyle and the surrounding community. In addition to her role as a GP she has been working as the school doctor at Peace Lutheran College for the past 11 years; a position which enables her to work with adolescents, an area of medicine she loves. “I am very keen on adolescent health and the impacts of nutrition and lifestyle on health, as well as the effects of obesity on well-being,” explains Liz. “I am keen to develop this aspect of my practice further in the future.” Work aside Liz is mum to five children and with her husband James shares a passion for horses. “I started riding about 3 years ago and am now studying equine therapy in addition to trying to improve my riding skills” reveals Liz. “I am hoping to Jump 95 cm by the time I’m 50!” Living the life she loves in her Far North tropical paradise, Liz is the best doctor she can be, with a bright future of continual self-improvement, helping others and a desire to rise above any challenge. “I love work,” explains Liz. “I tend to have longer consults than the average GP and I see many patients seeking second opinions. It is really satisfying to be able to find a solution to someone’s problem that perhaps was overlooked before. I feel so lucky that I get the opportunity to help people and make a difference to their lives.”

Just as you would expect your dentist to be displaying a perfect smile, renowned physiotherapist Amanda Gale is a fitting example of the life she leads. Refreshingly positive, amazingly toned and with more than 30 years of experience, Amanda is one of Cairns’ best physiotherapists. Her love of helping people and determination for complete health and wellbeing has led her to become a living example of the passion she breathes. Beginning her career in the 1980s at the Cairns Base Hospital, Amanda quickly became passionate about the pursuit of continual health. “My patients were appointed to me mainly due to a response from an injury,” says Amanda. “Once their treatment was over, so too was my chance to educate them on the importance of everyday wellbeing.” In 2010 Amanda fulfilled her long-time pursuit and opened the Amanda Gale Physiotherapy and Wellbeing Clinic. And while physiotherapy is the core of the business, Amanda and her 50-strong team have created a true holistic centre of health, unique to the region. Clients who receive physiotherapy return to partake in a variety of different activities, from massages to yoga and aquatic classes. “My goal was to create a similar environment of a health retreat, available 365 days a year, and do be able to offer it in an affordable way,” explains Amanda. “Everybody needs maintenance, and we need to put our health first.” The clinic itself has a very ‘non-clinical’ feel, set in a Queenslander surrounded by leafy trees. “I love to be in nature and this was a lot of my inspiration for the aesthetics of the clinic, such as windows with views and fresh air,” says

25

Amanda. “I wanted to create a warm, nurturing homeenvironment feel.” The life Amanda leads inside the clinic is no different to her outside one. When Amanda is not practicing or instructing pilates classes, she is attending courses, sourcing the very best staff and health products, or furthering her studies. Additional studies in Chinese Medicine, clinical nutrition, naturopathy, herbalism, DNA profiling, Tai Chi and mediation has led Amanda to a deeper understanding of the human body. And having injured nearly every part of her body, Amanda has first-hand knowledge of what she needs to do for her clients. “I’ve spent just as much time on the other side of the treatment bed’, admits Amanda. “It is definitely an advantage for my team to have had injuries as I believe it makes them better equipped to treat people.” It is rare that people’s lives match up with their aspirations. Amanda Gale’s life is indeed inspiringly remarkable. She is leading the best life she possibly can in order to be able to help others live theirs. “My life revolves around creating a positive impact that myself and my team make in people’s everyday lives,” Amanda says. “It really is ‘my pleasure’ when people thank me for the duty that I’ve performed.” Amanda Gale Physiotherapy and Wellbeing Clinic Ph: (07) 4041 7717 www.amandagalephysio.com.au

Nicole Mickan was the mother of a young son when she began her studies in dentistry, unaware she had a second on the way. It had been nine years since she last stepped inside a classroom, and she feared she was too old to pursue a new career. But Nicole successfully managed the juggle of being a mum and full-time student, giving birth to her second son just 10 days before her first year final exams. She has also received two international awards for academic excellence in the past two years. With a life-long interest in health, Nicole finished highschool and studied pharmacy for 18 months before deciding it wasn’t for her. She then spent the following six years working as an independent consultant for a nutrition company. Nicole is now in her fifth and final year of her dentistry degree, completing a year-long clinical placement, first with JCU Dental and will soon join Queensland Health at Mareeba. And she’s confident she has chosen the right career. “It’s such a wonderful feeling when a patient walks in with a throbbing toothache and walks out pain free after a procedure only you as a dentist can do for them,” she said. “Regardless of how hectic or busy my days get, whenever I’m treating a patient I feel at ease and relaxed and the days just fly by. That’s how I know this is for me.” JCU Dental is a training facility dedicated to providing comprehensive dental care to the community of Cairns and surrounds. Under supervision, Nicole performs all facets of dentistry from dentures and root canals to restorations and crowns. Nicole sees patients from many and varied backgrounds, and says helping the people who need it most is a rewarding experience. Describing herself as a country girl with a love of the outdoors, camping and fishing, Nicole hopes to continue her career in North Queensland following her graduation in December 2014. “My family and I love the lifestyle of regional and rural Queensland and the flexibility of dentistry allows you to have a great career, be a mum and enjoy quality time with your family,” she said.

Philippa Carter was browsing a university careers expo when she stumbled across an audiology display. Ten years later she owns and runs the Cairns Audiology Group in partnership with Gerard Del Favero. “I was always scientifically minded, at school I thought I’d get into something involving science, biology or anatomy. I first looked at medicine or speech pathology but audiology caught my eye and I haven’t looked back.” Originally from Charters Towers, Philippa travelled to Brisbane to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science and Masters of Clinical Audiology at the University of Queensland. She moved to Cairns to start her career in audiology and established Cairns Audiology Group in 2008. Cairns Audiology Group is a full service audiology clinic offering a wide range of services including hearing assessments for all age groups, hearing aid prescription and repair and subsidised services for eligible pensioners and veterans. Cairns Audiology Group also offers a range of specialist diagnostic audiology services including the assessment and management of tinnitus and is the only audiology service in Cairns to offer vestibular function testing for clients with symptoms of dizziness or balance disorders. The locally owned and operated business employs three University trained, Masters level audiologists with experience working with all age groups from newborn babies to the elderly. Philippa says the most rewarding aspect of her work is being able to offer such high quality services to the local community despite the isolation of Far North Queensland from the South East corner. “Audiology is a rapidly developing field and it takes a lot of work, particularly up here, to keep abreast of the changes. “We are continually working towards strengthening our business so we can continue to offer services locally and ensure our clients have no need to travel further south to access specialist audiology services.” For more information on Philippa or Cairns Audiology Group go to: www.cairnsaudiologygroup.com or call 07 4054 5561

Dr Heather McNamee, medical director, of Cairns Doctors is passionate about her work in sexual, reproductive and preventative health. “ Men, in particular, are guilty of ignoring health problems until they escalate into something much worse than they could have been . Even when health issues start to affect areas of their life that are extremely important to them, such as their sex life, they continue to bury their heads in the sand!” Heather continues. “ It is so frustrating as there is so much more can be done for, for example , erection problems than was possible even 10 years ago. Also as a doctor with an interest in men’s health I know in some men the problems with the arteries in the penis may be the tip of the iceberg (so to speak!) and may reflect an underlying hardening of the arteries in the heart. Research has shown there are many avoidable deaths in men in Australia if they would just work up the courage to come for a proper check up.” “ I set up Cairns Doctors partly to target these doctor shy men, and also to offer women specialist services such as termination of pregnancy and insertion of Mirena (progesterone releasing) and copper coil contraceptive devices (IUCD) which can be difficult to access in North Queensland” Dr Kay Haig, local Sexual Health Physician will be joining the experienced team at Cairns Doctors. “Sexual Health is a fairly new speciality, it involves managing the most intimate health needs of men and women, ”Dr Kay says. “My experience in Sexual Health started in Family Planning . Contraception especially IUCD’s and menopause management have been great interests of mine for many years. Working at Family Planning also helped me explore the area of sex counselling. However it has been working at Sexual Health that has introduced me to the rewarding field of STI treatment and HIV management. I’ve never worked in private practice but I feel the time is right to offer an alternative clinic. I believe offering a choice of services is very important for sexual health matters. I’ve known Dr Heather Mc Namee for many years and have great respect for her knowledge and skills. She has put together a great team that will offer our clients confidential, non-judgemental and expert care. I’m really looking forward to starting with Heather on the 25th February.”

F

abrics can be very scientific but a dash of H2O in my Scotch is about as scientific as I get! My articles are based on personal experiences and are a guide to entice you to enjoy some different fabrics and revisit the wonderful old. I chose ‘Rayon’ to begin the Material Girl trail, as it is misunderstood by some. Rayon is a semi-synthetic fibre made of naturally occurring products like wood pulp. Although the fibres are broken down artificially, it has the same properties as natural fibres and imitates the feel of silk. Rayon will never give you grief with static electricity. It loses some of its strength when wet but regains it when it’s dry. Rayon fabrics are soft, smooth, cool and comfortable but they don’t insulate body heat, which makes them ideal for use in hot and humid climates. Types of rayon include viscose, modal and tensel.

30

CairnsLife

Some 20+ years ago I bought a “bargain priced” rayon garment at a market that had no care instructions. My mum warned me it would crease but I couldn’t resist the silky feel and how wonderfully the fabric hung. However, I was bitterly disappointed with how quickly it wore out, the cut, the colour fade, how much the colour ran and how easily it creased. I didn’t dare buy rayon again until just 3 years ago when I discovered the brand ‘Humidity’ - cool and flowing garments that are perfect for us in the north! Jo, (the designer and owner,) shares my passion for fabrics and her attention to detail in every aspect of the production process is second to none - this truly reflects in the quality of her final products. Now I proudly stock Rayon garments in my boutiques. Chantelle, (one of my Palm Cove employees,) adores rayon too. At anytime of the day, Chantelle always looks fresh - it’s as though her rayon outfit has been newly pressed. (This is due to a high-grade fabric.) Chantelle says she sometimes steams her rayon outfits, but has also just hung them up to dry overnight

and by wearing the item on her ten minute trip to work, her natural body heat ensures the fabric loses its creases. She also hand washes her rayon in cool water and places it on a hanger in the shade to dry. So the question is, does rayon shrink? Yes it will, however, many fabrics shrink if not prewashed before the dying and/or sewing process occurs or if the garment is not cared for correctly. (In rayon’s case - hand washing and cool water are a must.) How you wash an item and the temperature of the water can have a big bearing on how long your new garment will last, how nicely it hangs and how great it feels!

“WE DON’T OPERATE LIKE A NORMAL WORK ENVIRONMENT, WE’RE FRIENDS. IT’S LIKE FAMILY AND THE YOUNGER ONES ON BOARD MAKES US YOUNGER”. (SELENA MURPHY, DIRECTOR - NORTHERN INTERIORS)

S

SELENA MURPHY Director Northern Interiors 120 Anderson St, Cairns | 4053 6322 www.northerninteriors.com.au facebook.com/NorthernInteriorsCns admin@northerninteriors.com.au 33

elena Murphy has been with Northern Interiors for 16 years. However, it was time to take over from the original owners and infuse a personalised mark on an enterprise Selena “knew inside and out”. The style and decorating genius, who has an innate flare for making your home look beyond fabulous, now operates a one-stop shop that does it all; blinds, curtains, shutters, colour consulting, décor products and offers the best cup of coffee personally made by Selena’s wing man and equally talented son, Matthew. The 22-year old has been working with Northern Interiors for the last 12 months after excelling in his cabinet making apprenticeship, completed with EK Kitchens in Buchan Street, finishing well ahead of time. “I was fascinated with making things with my hands”, says Matt. “When I joined Northern Interiors I started off doing deliveries then installations, where there’s no room for error, and was able to stand back, take a good look at my work and feel satisfied seeing it in its entirety. Dealing directly with the public, taking their ideas on board and helping them build a complete picture with colour schemes, layouts and coming from the industry, I have, not only inspires clients but me”, beams Matt. “The feedback has been so good and Matt has a real eye for placement and ideas”, adds Selena. “He’s often asked what it’s like working with me and always says he enjoys it. We have our moments but laugh a lot and look forward to seeing each other since Matt moved out of home”, chuckles Selena. “Plus, so many clients now know Matt has mastered our cappuccino maker and pop in for a coffee. There’s always one for me in the morning too and occasionally we look after Matt if he’s had a big weekend on the wing with FNQ FC Heat”. With Matt’s skills and insight on board Northern Interiors has been able to expand and diversify in the latest styles and products available on the market today. Having the mindset of the younger generation involved in the company has also infused a focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly options such as solar operating blinds and green-star rating fabrics that are fast becoming popular choices. Selena’s right hand man also has a thorough understanding of their extensive range and how to orchestrate this to suit individual styles, budgets and projects while offering the best advice, something he’s learnt from the best in the business. New owner and new team have become the Murphy mantra as well as building a family-oriented environment at the Anderson Street centre and, Kerry, Selena’s Manager, has helped cement this approach with daughter Shanee undertaking her administration traineeship there. “Giving young people opportunities to be involved in our business is paramount these days”, reinforces Selena, “It keeps us aligned with the goals of today’s and tomorrow’s generation”. Selena’s ideas are already brewing about the future too and possibly a ‘shop within a shop’ to create a tangible Northern Interiors experience. And, with Matt welcoming more responsibility it’s likely someone else will be making coffee.

An innovative design concept for the home, garden and commercial sector is now available in the Cairns region thanks to the ingenuity of locals LeaAnne and Vince Cassaniti.

T

he couple, known for their successful business OceanBlue Boats, have ventured into new territory with OceanBlue Living - designed to deliver high quality architectural design products made of steel and aluminium. “We have discovered that by applying the versatility of our recently purchased state-of-the-art water jet machine for our boat business that we could create a wide range of customised artistic indoor and outdoor screens, wall art, room dividers, light boxes, letter boxes, furniture and garden art,” says LeaAnne. “We can also cater for commercial businesses with specific pieces to feature logos and signage, as well as working on a larger scale to produce decorative exterior facades for buildings and fit outs for bistros and cafes.” “Although highly popular in the major cities, these products haven’t been readily accessible in regional areas such as ours.” “Once we obtained the water jet machine we quickly went to work designing a few pieces to showcase the concept.” “The result has been fantastic, and the potential to help improve an existing

home or commercial business, or incorporate them into a new home or business from the design stage is huge!” “The diversity of the materials used, such as Corten weather steel, mild steel and aluminium with the advantage of being able to powder coat to suit individual colour requirements means there is only room for the imagination when using a client’s design, or one of ours.” “Creating a signature piece that has impact provides the distinct advantage of it being viewed as a carefully designed work of art - one that will be treasured for many years to come.” “The quality and beauty of the finished product transcends wonderfully into an endless array of décor stories from rustic themes to the elegant and whimsical. “This is such a refreshing change for us; and we are confident this new concept will not only add value to homes and businesses, but will also inspire a modern trend that will prove timeless.”

Adding a touch of Brazilian flavour to the Cairns health arena, husband and wife psychiatrists Prof Carlos Hojaij and Dr Ana Drach arrived on our shores a few short weeks ago. With a wealth of combined experience behind them, they hope to contribute to the further development of the private psychiatric sector, together with existing specialists in the region. By Kate van Eck

I

t was while attending a Melbourne conference in 1996 that the couple first came in contact with our beautiful city. “After commenting to my colleagues how attractive and organised Australia was, I joked: maybe we should move, and establish the executive committee of the Brazilian Association here,” says Carlos. Their call to the universe was answered just a year and a half later when an opportunity to re-organise a division of psychiatry saw the family settle in Melbourne for a number of years. After returning to Brazil in 2011 for family reasons, Ana had the opportunity to visit Cairns once again for a locum work with Ramsay Health. “She very much enjoyed living here, the people she worked with and the general atmosphere of the city,” Carlos says. “After being invited to return, we both signed a contract with Ramsay Health to work in The Cairns Clinic and Cairns Private Hospital.” Highly recognised internationally in their chosen profession, the couple are now responsible for psychiatric patients admitted to The Cairns Clinic. “Most of these patients come in suffering from depression, anxiety, psychosis or abuse of both prescribed and/or non prescribed drugs,” they say. “We also work closely with other medical specialists in the Cairns Private Hospital, assisting those in need of a psychologicalpsychiatric assessment, support and treatment.” In addition, Carlos and Ana also see outpatients in private rooms at Brighton Clinic. “We have a desire to help people to make sense of their predicament, instilling hope, fostering independence and building courage to promote change in their lives.” With extensive experience within a variety of different cultures (including fluency in a number of languages), Carlos and Ana hope to offer a broad cultural and humanist perspective, which should no doubt be of benefit to a city as multicultural as Cairns. “We love what we do. So, it is great to work together.” “We have certainly been inspired by this very natural city, the spontaneity of Cairns people, the similarity to Brazil in the way of living, the very professional organizational and medical standards implemented by Ramsay in its facilities, the prospect of a significant progress in The Cairns Clinic and, of course, the very warm and sincere welcome we’ve received.”

T

he Royal Flying Doctor Service, Near and Far Auxiliary, is very aptly named, as members are a diverse group of hard working town and country people from all over North Queensland who help raise funds “to keep the flying doctor flying”. Members are found in the Atherton Tablelands in the north, Hughenden in the west, Charters Towers and Pentland in the south west, Collinsville in the south, Townsville and Magnetic Island in the East, and many places in between. The area covered by the Auxiliary, and the RFDS is huge. The Near & Far Auxiliary was originally formed inland from Ingham in 1981, by an enthusiastic and grateful group of town and country people, led by Joan and Toby Atkinson. The Atkinson’s had been fundraising for their daughter in the 1980

RFDS Queen of the Outback Quest which their daughter, Bronwyn won that year. Since then, the Auxiliary members have participated in all manner of events including: the famous Reedybrook Ashes at George and Joan Harriman’s property at Reedybrook, Low Holm and Lincoln Springs “Wimbledon” weekends, Field Days on the Tablelands and Townsville, Race Days at Pentland and the Tinaroo Barra Bash. The members take these events as an opportunity to get together, have fun, run raffles and sell souvenirs all with a goal to raise money for the Flying Doctor. At most events there is someone there who has been helped by the RFDS and is happy to share their experience. It makes the auxiliary members feel proud to be associated with such a well respected, iconic Australian organisation and their community.

39

CairnsLife

The Auxiliary also has a long list of supporters, who are valued for the help they regularly give. Whether they are businesses or an individual, they assist in so many ways with stalls and events held throughout the year. Donations and funds raised over the years, have assisted in the upgrade of clinic facilities in inland centres and the purchase of much appreciated medical equipment for the aircraft, at both our Townsville and Cairns Bases. For as long as the RFDS continues its good work, the Auxiliary will be there to support them. If you would like to become a member of the RFDS Near and Far Auxiliary or are keen to support this group, please email nearandfaraux@hotmail.com.

‘Masters of Design and Building’

With five generations of his family in the one town, Nathan Verri certainly qualifies as a local.

A W A

R

D

Nathan’s strong family ties to the local building industry continued when he began his apprenticeship in 2003, working with his uncle Dennis Verri – another trusted name in building for more than 40 years. In 2007, at the young age of 23, Nathan obtained his builders license and started his own business. After many successful years, Nathan’s passion and talent grew to incorporate design and all aspects of building from start to finish. With this, the business evolved to Nathan Verri ‘Masters of Design and Building’. Originally servicing the Port Douglas and Mossman areas, the business has since expanded to include Cairns and the Tablelands, supported by a growing team of local building professionals. “I love working with the diverse range of people the Far North brings, including local, national and international clients. From grand designs to renovations, no job is too big or too small. Our team’s comprehensive knowledge and experience with the local environment means we enhance its beauty and overcome any of its challenges,” Nathan said. Nathan has an enthusiasm for staying one step ahead, and has embraced the industry’s latest innovations including 3D imaging. Exceptional customer service and supporting local businesses is key to providing a quality service, according to Nathan who engages locally based suppliers and sub-contractors. “We have the contacts and experience only a local builder can bring to the table, and it has certainly paid off,” he said. Within three years of opening his business, Nathan Verri won the prestigious ‘Rising Star’ Master Builders Award along with both the regional and state award for Best Individual Home. Most recently he claimed awards for Best Individual Home and Best Swimming Pool and Outdoor Living Area in Far North Queensland in 2013. “Building our company has brought wonderful awards and accolades, all of which are a reflection of our fabulous team and their hard work.” That team includes Nathan’s partner Julie Scott. Also born and bred in Cairns, Julie holds the important role of Marketing Director and Creative Consultant. This role provides clients with a personalised service to assist with the selection process. “The tropical environment requires you to think outside the square and be innovative,” Julie said. Nathan agrees Far North Queensland provides a challenging climate and unique landscapes which combine to create interesting conditions for his work. “Our clients’ different needs encourage me to find new and exciting solutions to achieve their goals. There is nowhere on earth I would rather be.”

I WAS BORN ON THE 10TH OF DECEMBER 1985 IN THE COMMUNITY OF THURSDAY ISLAND, TORRES STRAIT. I AM NOW BASED IN CAIRNS WITH MY LITTLE FAMILY AND CURRENTLY STUDYING CERTIFICATE IV FITNESS AT THE TROPICAL NORTH INSTITUTE OF TAFE. ART IS A HOBBY BECAUSE MY GOAL IS TO GAIN FULLTIME EMPLOYMENT SO I CAN PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY BUT STILL MAINTAIN THAT SENSE OF BELONGING AND SHARING OF MY CULTURE.

What’s your background? My identity and heritage comes from the Maluililgal people, Badu Island of my father’s side. Badu Island is situated in the western cluster of the Torres Strait and lies forty kilometres west of Thursday Island. I am the eldest son of three brothers in our family. My father is a proud Torres Strait Islander, a malu mabaig (deep sea man). My mother is a registered nurse in the Torres Strait and has spent over 3 decades working in Indigenous Health, maintaining a strong, positive relationship based on mutual respect and trust. My two brothers are Patock and Tipoti. Where is your favourite place to relax and get back to your roots? My favourite place is spending time with my family and this allows me to reconnect with my culture because I get to teach my two daughters traditional language and songs. My other favourite place is at my cousin’s Alick Tipoti and he always tells me stories from the past about our ancestors. We also sing traditional songs and perform traditional dances from Badu Island. What’s your strongest memory of your childhood? I have many childhood memories but the ones that stand apart from the others is growing up on Badu Island. My brothers, cousins and I would always go out in the boat hunting, diving, fishing and learning the cultural knowledge from my father Dinto Tamwoy. We grew up to be respectful and to take pride of your identity because your family plays an important role in your life, and these are my best memories learning cultural knowledge from your family. What art do you most identify with? I try to explore different mediums so that my stories can be shared to the wider audience. My works are diverse and that is what I aim for and the mediums that will be on display are carving acrylic paintings on paper and canvas, linoprints and sketches. Badu Island is full of culture and comes in many forms whether it is storytelling, dancing, art,

or language but it shares one common goal and that is to provide knowledge to its people. I prefer lino printing because you can carve many designs onto your lino and your stories can be easily told. What is your dream project? One of my principles when doing art is about providing people information which increases their understanding and knowledge of my ancestry. My future project is to enter the Telstra Art Awards and hopefully win an award because it would be a huge achievement to represent my community. My other project that I would like to do is to attend schools in the Torres Strait and share my knowledge to the next generation about the expression of art. Name three artists you’d like to be compared to. I can’t really answer that question because I truly think that no artists can be compared, they may have comparisons in their art but everyone is different and it’s the difference that makes them stand apart from others. I would like to think that my art is different because I grew up differently and my stories are what make me. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? My father always said “One Heart, One Mind” and this means you’ve only got one heart and whatever you choose to do in life, you must put your mind to achieve it. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I don’t know because it’s nice to see the future but it’s rather rewarding to live in the present and take each day as it comes. What is the most pleasing project have you completed? I haven’t accomplished any major project as of yet because art is a hobby, it’s a chance for me to escape into my memories and relive it by interpreting those memories onto the different mediums. However for my first solo exhibition at UMI Arts Centre, I feel so proud that I have been given this opportunity to showcase my talent and to share my stories to mainstream Australia about a life of a Badu Islander, and this is an accomplishment for myself.

The Doc says I need a Re-bore.

WHAT’S A

“RE-BORE”?

When men talk about having a “Re-bore” they are referring to an operation on the prostate. The correct name is a Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate or TURP. The TURP is an operation which has been refined over the past 60 years and is still regarded as the “gold standard” in prostate surgery. It is regularly carried out as a day surgery case in Cairns with patients returning home after the procedure. This saves a significant amount in costs. Cairns Day Surgery is leading the way in Australia with over 700 cases having been performed there. The prostate is located at the opening of the bladder like a donut and as men get older the prostate gets bigger and may squeeze on the pipe like the hole of the donut getting smaller. As it does that, it can cause symptoms such as delayed starting, slow stream, incomplete emptying, going more frequently, dribbling at the finish, getting up at night and sometimes incontinence. The operation is carried out under a general anaesthetic. The central portion of the prostate which is obstructing the man’s ability to urinate properly is removed. This is like making the hole of the donut bigger or taking out an apple core. It is carried out by passing an endoscopic instrument down the penis. The tissue removed is sent to Pathology to see if there is any sign of prostate cancer. Often men are treated initially with tablets that relax the opening of the bladder which may help. There are also medications that can shrink the prostate but they sometimes have an effect of lowering the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test. This test may assist in detecting a prostate cancer but if the reading is artificially low because

of the tablets then there may be a delay in diagnosis. Also, they can cause some men to lose their erections which may not return if the medication is stopped. These medications are not always helpful unless combined with the “relaxing” ones. There is no scientific evidence to show that “natural medications” have any documented benefit when examined in properly conducted scientific trials.

Love, Sex & Relationships

Use sex

to get past ruts

in your marriage

M

ost people expect that the intensity of their sex lives will fade after they marry. Some guys even resign themselves to never having good sex again after deciding to spend the rest of their lives with one woman. But this doesn’t have to be the case; marriage doesn’t necessarily mean the death of hot sex, but it will take some effort from both of you to keep it steamy as the years go by. There will be times in your marriage when careers,

family, kids, friends, hobbies and other important tasks will pack your schedule and get in the way of maintaining a good relationship. There will be periods when the two of you are not communicating well and don’t seem to be connecting with each other. When you experience these ruts in your relationship, don’t let sex go by the wayside. Use the time you have together wisely by getting frisky. If your marriage is experiencing a dip, it’ll fall even further

46

CairnsLife

if the two of you don’t connect sexually. Instead of abandoning your bedroom activities at the first sign of trouble, use sex to get back on track. In order to make married sex better, try to stop thinking of your partner as “my other half ”. Allow your imagination to run wild; think of them as a new lover and encourage your partner to play their part. Tap into the intense attraction you have for each other and forget that you’re husband and wife.

What is love is when your husba nd does all the housework !

By Ronelle McConaghy

I

’m a psychologist so I get asked this question a lot. People ask me, what is love… will I ever love… will I ever be loved…how can I love her, why does he do that if he loves me? So if I’m to do my job well I need to be able to explain this crazy little thing called love. To explain love I decided to read and found that the ancient Greeks have categorised it, William Shakespeare romanticized it, Elizabeth Barrett Browning enumerated it, musicians harmonized it, Hollywood objectified it and Facebook publicised it. But all that left me more confused! I needed a succinct definition. So I did what I needed to do to find the meaning of love…I googled it and guess what? Google complexified it! Out with the books and into life I go lo and behold I learn that love can be feelings and

thoughts! I know that, I feel …I feel “love” when my husband brings in the washing without me nagging. So if that is true, love can be a feeling (I felt it) and an action (he did it), so love can be a feeling that I get from the action carried out by another. So in short using non-scientific words, my husband loved me enough to take in the washing (no nagging required) and that action can be referred to as loving and that reference can inspire my mind to create the thought that my husband loves me and then my mind can motivate me to act in a loving way toward my husband and before you know all the housework is done and I’m ready to return the lovin’! It must be love… So what is love, seriously…perhaps love is best defined as the willingness to make changes for another!

The Agents Bucket List The expectation is that I travel a lot, and well there is some truth to that. It’s a never ending addiction and no matter how many countries I have been to there are still more to see. The world is a big place! So just what is on my bucket list? This is my top 5, but trust me, there are many more Myanmar This is Burma’, wrote Rudyard Kipling. ‘It is quite unlike any place you know about.’ How right he was: more than a century later Myanmar remains a world apart. Myanmar has only really started to open up to tourism since 1992, when the government starting encouraging tourism, and after the junta transferred power to a civilian government is has started to boom. There in lies the primary attraction, I wanted to experience the country before it is over ridden with “coca cola”. Unfortunately the downside to tourism is the more we love a place, the more we homogenise it, and I would like to see it before the inevitable happens. There are some extraordinary sights: the wonder of Pagan’s plain of a thousand temples, the legrowing fishermen of Inle Lake, and the glittering gold stupa of Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda. I plan to go in November. Egypt For centuries Egypt has been a tourism hot spot. What traveller would not want to gaze on the wonders of the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx or Abu Simbel? It still confounds me that I have

not yet been and despite the current troubles, it’s number two on my list. History is a bit of a passion for me, particularly ancient history, and Egypt is the mother load. I long to wander around the plethora of ancient monuments and crowded museums. Throw in the fascinating Egyptian people, the magnificent Nile and some time to relax and dive at Sharm El-Sheik and you have a dream destination. Zanzibar Just the sound of it sounds exotic! For centuries Zanzibar has been a crossroad of cultures and a calling port for anybody travelling in East Africa or doing business around the Indian Ocean. As a consequence, its population is a very rich and colourful mixture of different ancestries (African, Persian, Omani and other Arab states, and Asian) Throw in dramatic beaches, a UNESCO world heritage old town – and a chance to connect with the spirit world and I’m in. Mauritius Another hodge podge of cultures, dreamy beaches and great food. Mauritius is a tropical fantasy of an island in the southern Indian Ocean, blessed with sunshine, trade winds and endless coastlines.

This island has nearly a dozen important nature reserves and botanical gardens to explore, in settings from the city center to the Black River Gorge, and others set amidst tropical mountains and waterfalls. The Mauritians are a friendly and hospitable people and that’s the magical ingredient that makes this place sound like heaven Lethoso I saw a documentary a few years ago about this less visited part of Africa and have wanted to go ever since, basically for that very reason. With the unusual distinction of being completely surrounded by another country, this sovereign, independent nation has much to offer the intrepid explorer. With all its land lying at altitudes in excess of 1500m above sea-level; Lesotho is a land of heights and extremes. Combined with the rugged beauty, proud, rich, local culture and traditions, who wouldn’t want to visit “the kingdom in the sky”. Wherever you choose to travel this year have fun.

tudent visas are comprised of eight subclasses which are determined by the level of study being undertaken, for example English studies, vocational education, higher education and postgraduate studies, to name a few. To be eligible for the grant of a student visa you must be accepted for full time study in a registered course. A registered course is an education or training course offered by an Australian education provider registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Students must also meet key requirements including financial capacity, English language level and academic record and history requirements. General requirements also apply including that you are of good character, intend a genuine temporary stay, be of sound health and hold private health insurance. Students under 18 years of age also have additional eligibility requirements. Student visas are assessed according to assessment levels which range from 1 to 5. The passport that you hold and the education sector of your course determines the assessment level for your visa. The higher the assessment level the higher are the minimum evidentiary requirements

Australia has an overseas student program which allows international students to study here in Australia. Individuals wishing to participate in the student program must obtain a student visa before commencing a course of study in Australia.

an applicant has to satisfy. Australia has introduced streamlined student visa processing arrangements. There are a number of universities and education partners who are participating in the program. Students who enrol in studies with these participating education providers are not assigned an assessment level and as such have less evidentiary requirements that they need to meet for the student visa. To be eligible for the streamlined processing applicants must have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) with a university participating in the streamlined visa processing arrangements for a bachelor degree, masters degree, doctoral degree, non-award university student exchange program or a non-award study abroad program. If students are enrolling in a package of courses, all the preliminary courses must be at the university participating in the streamlined visa processing arrangements or a nominated educational business partner of the university provider. To check your eligibility for a streamlined student visa you should seek the assistance of a Registered Migration Agent who can give advice and guidance on the right visa application for you.

t The Yoga School we teach a style of yoga that honours the ancient traditions and acknowledges modern exercise science. When taught correctly, yoga provides many benefits: flexibility, healthier joints, toned muscles, weight control, reduction of stress, ability to focus, etc. All teachers at The Yoga School are taught and certificated by Master Teacher, Nicky Knoff. The essential “tools” in the yoga repertoire are: postures, breathwork, meditation, relaxation and philosophy. These tools are synergistic and the sum is greater than the whole! At the Yoga School we recognize the importance of incorporating all of these tools in each and every class. Imagine a bicycle wheel with 5 spokes. If you remove even 1 spoke you weaken the wheel and it will not roll true.

…what to do

he majority of travel arrangements result in an enjoyable experience, a relaxing break that will linger in your memory for many months, if not years to come. But what if the hotel you booked turns out to be in the middle of the “red light district”, with paper thin walls, guests to-ing and froing all night; not to mention you have found cockroaches in the bathroom, the sheets are disgusting and the restaurant is closed for major refurbishment. What then? Agreed this is an extreme example but the question remains; do you simply purchase ear plugs, the largest vermin trap you can find, a takeaway dinner and “lie back and think of England” or do you check-out? What you do next is up to you and very much depends on what you were expecting of your accommodation. If you only paid $50.00 a night for a place

in the centre of a large European city, you might take a philosophical approach and chalk it all up to experience. If however, you had paid $300.00 per person for the accommodation and you had booked for 5 nights, a more decisive action would be likely. So what can you do if you find that the accommodation you have booked isn’t what you want and how can you maximise your chance of getting a full refund if not a partial refund for the nights you chose not to stay at the property? The first thing you must do is take a mental note of what is wrong, take photos, video or whatever evidence you can to assist. In these days of mobile phones that include digital cameras, do yourself a favour and take a few shots with your phone that you can produce as evidence later if required. Tell someone you aren’t happy, this can be as simple as asking the receptionist for

another room or asking for the manager if changing rooms isn’t going to help the situation. If you are offered an alternative room you should have a look at it and if this still isn’t suitable take the manager’s name and advise that you are checking out. The first rule of successful refund claim is that you must allow the person at the property the opportunity to put things right. If they choose to let you walk out, that’s fine, but if you don’t allow them the opportunity to make amends on the spot, you may jeopardise your rights later. With proper planning, the use of reputable travel agents and wholesalers and research on the internet, your chances of this are very much reduced…. but now you know what to do if your “accommodation attacks”!

TESTIMONIALS 2014... Believe Anything is Possible & Join Team EmPowerFx

“My life changed for the better when I met Emma in January 2012 and started training with the emPowerfx crew”

Tae J os ts on s

hen I started training, just doing the 400m warm up lap left me puffing and gasping for air! One of the first things I told Emma was about a recurring dream I had where I was a great runner and could run long distances. Running was something I thoroughly detested and was terrible at. This, I now realise is because these are the messages I was telling myself. Your thoughts become your reality and Emma encouraged me to challenge myself, my thinking and made me believe I could achieve whatever I set my mind to. I am proud to say that in June 2013 I completed my first Half Marathon (21.1km) in the Cairns Half Ironman team event. My next goal will be a full marathon (42.2km) run in 2014. Emma is not just a personal trainer but more of a life coach who is genuinely passionate about helping you become the best version of yourself and makes you realise that anything is really possible if you believe it is. Emma is always there to provide support, motivation and inspiration along your journey to achieving your goals. I am truly lucky to have found such a warm-hearted, genuine and inspiring person. I cannot speak highly enough about training with emPowerfx. If you want to join a great bunch of people who are welcoming, supportive, encouraging and enjoy having a laugh, then you must come and join us. We’re not just a training group, we are like a family. Not only will you meet an amazing bunch of people and create some great friendships, you will also become a happier, healthier, and fitter version of yourself.

“If you like the idea of group training with a bunch of like-minded people seeking fitness and fun, then emPowerfx is definitely for you”

or many I had been overweight, unfit, unmotivated and not particularly happy. I had tried several diets and started many exercise programs that always started promisingly, then seemed to lose steam after a month or so. At 31 years of age and weighing 107 kilos, as well as having high blood pressure, I bought an exercise bike and managed to lose 7 kilos. Needing something more , I enquired to Emma Miller at emPowerfx about boxing fitness classes, as I had always been interested in boxing. Emma & Meagan were friendly, welcoming and very helpful with challenging routines and advice on safe and correct training. One session a week has now turned into five sessions a week that include boxing and BootCamp, which are regularly held in different outdoor locations and provide a great atmosphere for exercising. Now at 32, and weighing 90 kilos, my diet and medical condition is completely under control. I’m even attempting triathlons, which is something I never dreamed I would be capable of ! emPowerfx and their friendly training crew have provided me with fitness, friendship, healthy lifestyle and the ability to achieve my goals, even though it sometimes hurts!! For the first time in my life, I actually feel alive!! P.S – I hate mountain climbers ;)

B

E

mma has been with me ever since I decided to go on the roller coaster to a better, healthier lifestyle. When things going great she was there, things not so great she was there. Then the comfort zone theory came along and boy did Ms Miller take me out of that. You could see the whites of my eyes, and probably still see a little bit there because I’m permanently there now achieving things, I always watched other people do and thought nawh I can’t do that. Well, it appears there is no such thing as “can’t” only can do with Emma. Being part of Coral Coast and 70.3 Ironman teams was my total break point. Yep, whites totally showing thinking there is no way could do that swim, I was going to be eaten by a croc, or swam over or, or, or. Yep all the excuses counted up until Emma said yep it’s going to be hard, but you can do it. She believed in me when I didn’t and slowly week after week, tears (oh yeah there were tears) and smiles, it started to come together. There has been a smile on my face ever since crossing that 70.3 Ironman finish line. A little bit, thank gawd that’s over, but then there is a huge part; I did it, holy dolly batman (kids might read this I have to keep it clean) I did it. On crappy days I think about that day and all hard work went in to achieve it, smile and you know what….what’s next I say, and hopefully get over this mid life crises soon. Over time Emma and Empowerfx crew have become family, support you in good and bad times. Emma is there to chuck you out of the comfort zone and achieve things you never thought possible. It’s an adventure but one worth jumping on board for because you won’t look back because you won’t need too, a very special person will be there supporting you all the way.

have been training with Emma and Meagan for 3 years….everything from BootCamp & core sessions, to boxing & multi day fitness retreats. What began as a casual trial of various fitness sessions has resulted in a long lasting and sustained commitment to keeping fit with emPowerfx. Right from the start, I recognised qualities in Emma and her team that drew me in, with their positive energy, deep sense of commitment to individual’s needs, professionalism and natural coaching style. They also clearly loved their jobs. Whilst Emma’s knowledge, work ethic, coaching talent and passion for fitness are clearly evident, it is her sincere warmth, sense of humour & sheer enthusiasm that keeps people coming back, year after year. She has a natural ability to bring out the best in people both physically and mentally, helping people achieve mind and body balance. There’re lots of words to describe Emma Miller and her emPowerfx team – motivational, inspiring, dynamic, generous – but the thing that stands out for me is her sincerity and genuine desire to get people excited about feeling good. I’m proud to be part of the empPowerfx crew and to say that Coach Miller is not only an awesome coach, but a great mate.

“It is difficult to explain how much your life will change when you meet Emma Miller and start training with the Empowerfx crew. Every person in the team is so welcoming, supportive and ready to step out of their comfort zone.”

efore 2013, I considered myself to be healthy and fit. However, I would never step out of my comfort zone, purely because I thought I was at my best. Like many people, I would often compare myself to other people and consider their fitness and confidence impossible for someone like me. I started a training programme with Emma in January 2013, which incorporated boot camps and a schedule leading up to an Olympic Distance triathlon in June. My fitness, and more importantly, my confidence, improved dramatically! I started to achieve things that I never thought possible, trust in my abilities, and wake up every morning being so inspired by myself and my teammates. It is easy when you train with such supportive people like the Empowerfx team, being led by such an incredible woman, Emma Miller. I feel like a new person after training with the Empowerfx team. Physically, I have improved beyond belief; finishing my first Olympic distance triathlon and completing a 90km bike ride in Cairns 70.3. But beyond this, I have gained mental strength, determination and confidence in myself that never existed. The Empowerfx team and Emma are exactly that...Empowering. I now truly believe that anything is possible. If you are ready to test your limits, try something new for the first time in a supportive environment or start believing in yourself, this is for you! There are a great variety of classes and times, fantastic coaches and life changing team.

Belinda V E L L A Timeless Elegance Hair and Beauty also known as” Cairns Bridal Hair

Hairdresser

of the month Who are you and what do you do? My name is Belinda Vella owner of Timeless Elegance Hair and Beauty. I am a professional creator in all aspects of hair styling as well as being a wife and mum to 3 beautiful children. Timeless Elegance Hair and Beauty offers a completely mobile wedding hair styling and makeup service to your home, hotel room or salon in Cairns, Palm Cove, Port Douglas, Mission Beach, the Daintree, the Atherton Tablelands, Fitzroy Island and Green Island taking the stress out of your big day. We come to you with a completely mobile beauty service for the entire bridal party from the bride and her bridesmaids to mothers of the bride and groom, flower girls and wedding guests so you can all relax while we pamper you on your wedding day. You don’t have to look elsewhere for hair and makeup services because no booking is too large or small for us to manage. Where did you do your training and how long have you been hairdressing for? Having starting my career in the Hairdressing Industry over 20 yrs ago and worked in some of Sydney’s exclusive salons I have learnt from some of the best stylists in the business, I have a sharp eye for current and classic trends tailored to compliment each client. I have now brought my vision , expertise and friendly approach to wedding hair and beauty to my boutique business, Timeless Elegance Hair and Beauty now based in Cairns, Queensland, and I now call myself a local when we re- located from Sydney 8yrs ago. What inspired you to become a Hairdresser? Doing work I love, meeting all kinds of people, learning from their experiences and transforming them into someone that they never thought would be possible. I love seeing the reactions on their faces when I’m finished being creative with their hair. It makes me happy knowing that I have made a difference in their life even for one day. Why did you choose to become a specialist for Weddings and other special occasions? I discovered my passion for creating beautiful wedding hairstyles after a long career in exclusive Sydney salons and as a personal hair stylist. I always loved to be creative but most of all loved being part of a Brides special day. You really become quite close to the Brides and get to know them on a different level. They put a lot of trust in you and you end up feeling like you really are part of the Bridal Party I love creating beautiful elegant styles for each Bride or Bridesmaid depending on the type of look they are aiming for but seeing the whole package come together, really is what I love about the whole experience and seeing my work in photographs. What is your favourite part of being involved with Bridal parties? My favourite part of the whole experience is being in a room full of happy excited people! Getting ready with all your closest girlfriends around you primping and pruning and lots of laugh’s really, it’s a lot of fun!Every Bride and Bridal Party is different so we get to experience all the High’s and Low’s of everyone’s journey leading up to the big day. It’s amazing how you take on the role of which ever kind of mood the Bride is feeling and making them feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible to make sure every moment is special and stress free for them. What is your favourite style or technique for brides? At the moment my favourite style is Vintage hair as

Timeless Elegance Hair and Beauty ALSO KNOWN AS” CAIRNS BRIDAL HAIR

they have a timeless elegance and can work beautifully with or without accessories; you can wear a birdcage veil, a beautiful pearl or crystal clip or even a vintage broach in your hair. The glamorous vintage styles of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s with all those the waves, curls and rolls take time to create... but the results are definitely worth it! A vintage hairstyle paired with a vintage wedding dress is nothing short of fabulous and for the bride looking for something classic and unique for her wedding day, the vintage hair style styles are perfect. How long before “you tie the knot” should someone see their hairdresser? It’s a good idea to book your hair and makeup in at least 6-12 months prior to the big day to ensure you don’t miss out. Some Brides leave it until the end and are disappointed when their wedding date isn’t available. Regular hair treatments and colours should also be important to ensure your hair is in its best condition for the stylists on the day. We see it as important to get to know you and the look you are after so that you feel completely comfortable on your wedding day…so it would be great if you would consider having a hair and makeup trial. This will give us a chance to go through ideas and discuss styling, giving you peace of mind and reducing preparation time on the wedding day. Specialising in wedding hair and makeup, we can recreate any look from a picture and if you haven’t a clue what you would like or are unsure what will suit, you can leave it in our expert hands. Either way, we will listen to what you want and work with you to achieve your hair and makeup dream. Whether it be the most natural look for a beach wedding or something more glamorous, we promise you will look gorgeous on your special day. Tailored to the humid tropical North Queensland climate, We use a combination of hot rollers, straightening irons, serums, waxes, sprays and volumisers to ensure your hairstyling lasts all day and night. In addition, the innovative Brazillian Cacau keratin hair treatment is available to smooth and eliminate frizz. Abigail uses a professional, water-proof foundation by Arbonne which is designed to resist humidity, tears and perspiration. Combined with the best quality products from MAC and Napoleon Perdis, your makeup will look fresh all day. Many people see photography as one of the most important aspects of their wedding day. We work very closely with the photographers in our region and know how important they consider the right products to be. Most of all, the reason I love doing my job is making people feel good about themselves, especially when someone has had a bad day or is feeling down clients always leave feeling happy. It is important when choosing your Wedding hair and makeup stylists they are infact qualified and not self taught! You want to make sure you feel comfortable with them and that they are willing to listen to your needs and not do what they want to do build up a good relationship with them and it’s always good to have pictures of styles so that you both have a good understanding of what you want on the day . Most of all Relax and enjoy it’s your wedding day it should be the Best day of your life! At the end of the day it’s our job to ensure you look and feel your most beautiful on your day xx

s d n e i r F Dogs are extremely social animals and enjoy nothing more than interacting with their own kind. Watching puppies play is one of the most heart-warming scenes in nature, and so much can be learnt about them as you watch them communicating with each other.

A

s they mature they engage in numerous forms of physical and verbal displays to establish hierarchy amongst their group. In a natural state serious aggression is rare and even in defence of territory or food very few significant injuries occur. In the domestic environment aggression between dogs is common. Many owners are forced to isolate their beloved canine for fear of them injuring another dog. What goes wrong in our relationship with our dogs that results in this type of behaviour? There are many contributing factors as to why a dog may become defensive and aggressive. These dogs may display several different forms of this behaviour when they encounter another canine. The aggression may be influenced by genetics, individual temperament or inadequate socialisation. In some cases they may have been the victim of

an aggressive attack or it may be a learned behaviour that becomes imprinted from watching other canine pack members. From birth to 18 weeks there is an imprint period that is the most relevant time for learning to socialise. Puppy pre-school is one of the most beneficial programs you can undertake with your new puppy. A wellstructured course should include supervised off- lead play which enables the puppies to learn important social skills. Aggression is not breed specific however the behaviour may be inherent in individual bloodlines. Every dog is born with its own distinct personality and this may also contribute to the way dogs react when confronted or placed in a stressful situation. Many dogs become aggressive as a result of being hurt by another dog. Physical injury is obvious but emotional distress can change the behaviour of even the friendliest canine.

Encourage your dog to interact with other dogs but observe and control their behaviour to avoid any fighting or dominant challenges. Dogs learn by watching each other. Be aware that a young dog will often imitate the behaviour of older dogs. In older dogs it may be difficult to determine the cause of their anti-social behaviour. A professional behaviourist can advise a suitable training and management program that will ensure the dog is adequately controlled. Commitment, patience and responsible ownership is crucial when owning a dog that displays aggression towards other canines. his special show will not only feature the famous musical brothers but also a host of some of the best performers from around Australia, including some local Cairns musicians. “For the past two years, James has been the artistic director for the Queensland Music Festival and through our involvement with them, we have worked with some amazing musicians from up here,” says John. “Another treat in the mix will be big band vocalist Jackie Cooper who will bring to life classic George Gershwin and Cole Porter arrangements with her beautiful voice. I’m just really looking forward to playing with all these great players.” Through one of the Queensland Music Festival [QMF] projects John and James have been involved with is the seeding of bands in the Cape York Peninsula. John says communities such as Aurukun, Coen and Hope Vale all have instrumental band programs in their primary schools. “This has been a very rewarding project,” he says. “We have also been part of resurrecting the Yarrabah Brass Band and the QMF have really made this happen. Two of the musicians who will be playing at Tanks with us – Jane Hopkinson and Knobby Nelson – have also been a big part of these projects. Bringing our Cairns musician friends together for the Tanks gig is a way of celebrating the things we have done together in the region. It will be fun!” The brothers formed the ‘big band’ over three decades ago – in fact, they were still underage when they first started gigging in nightclubs. To be honest, musically, little has changed - despite their musical successes over the years, the brothers are still enamoured by that big band era. John Morrison is the first to admit that there is something extremely special about that sound. “There is nothing musically that compares to a Big Band in terms of raw energy,” he says. “Many agree that for over a century the big band is ‘the’ sound of jazz. When James and I formed our first professional big band in 1982, we knew it would be the best way to showcase our sound. It still is. Trumpet players and drummers have traditionally been the leaders of the most powerful big bands (Maynard Fergusen, Dizzy Gillespie, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich) so it seemed fitting that two brothers playing trumpet and drums would fit right into this genre. It was destiny.” Their forthcoming set will be filled with only the best. Classics from the likes of Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and George Gershwin all make it onto the setlist, along with some of James’ finest original tunes (such as The Master Plan and Garn) to name a few. John hints that there will even be a Morrison Brothers TV classic of ‘The Flinstones’, which is ‘faster than dogs can hear.’ In fact, audiences can expect anything to happen at a Morrison Brothers Big Band show, according to John. “When we were much younger we used to start our show by abseiling onto the stage to the sounds of Peter Gunn and some smoke bombs going off everywhere – good grief !” he says. “These days we prefer to bring along all the fun and frivolity that the Morrison Brothers are traditionally known for, but with less chance of being arrested.”

Childs World Early Learning Centre Melanie Clarke By Melissa Szalai

Playing a key role in shaping young lives to build a strong, healthy future community based on good values and bright minds is important,” says Childs World Early Learning Centre Operations Manager Melanie Clarke.

M

elanie’s passion for early learning is contagious, and signifies the reason she is committed to a role that supports a nurturing environment for children to learn and grow. “It’s so precious to be able to touch children’s lives in a way that will guide them on their life journey as they to grow into well-rounded and valued individuals,” says Melanie. “Childs World Early Learning Centres has so much to offer children in terms of confidence building, helping them establish a sense of their own identity, and connectedness with their community.” “The Centre also excels in a curriculum that supports the children’s preparedness for school.” “We have an emphasis on numeracy and literacy, and integrate these aspects into everyday activities and play, which makes it fun and interesting.” Melanie adds that respect for others, personal belongings and the environment is a high priority. “Often children are only given plastic cups, or other non-breakable items to use, yet we make it a practice to give them the opportunity to appreciate and care for fragile items as well.” It’s a great way to teach them the value of precious things.” Supervising 60 qualified educators across four centres for the care and learning needs of children from babies to 12 yrs is an enjoyable challenge for Melanie, who takes pride in Australia’s largest early learning centre. “We have hourly Educator meetings throughout the day,” she says. “This keeps our educators up to date with time to share important early childhood information and strategies to embed high quality care and education for our children.” Another valued aspect of the Centre’s ongoing commitment to learning and growth is the importance of physical activity. “Our Centre is the only Early Learning Centre across the country to have its own swim centre,” says Melanie. “Childs World acknowledges living in a warm tropical climate means children are regularly coming into contact with water, whether it is a relative’s swimming pool, the beach or even the lagoon.” So they offer the opportunity for as many children to participate weekly in water safety and swimming lessons. “This has been one of the most important investments we have made into our Early Years Learning Curriculum,” says Melanie. “We have enjoyed seeing all the children gain more confidence and ability in the water and are so proud of all the clever Kindergarten kids that graduated last week.” “The growth of our swim school has been wonderful with more than 170 children attending an amazing 5,578 swimming lessons over the course of the year.” “It’s a wonderful adjunct to the Centre and a program that encourages physical activity to stimulate young minds.” “We are currently taking Enrolments for 2014 and welcome all families to come for a tour of Childs World, and see what a magical place it truly is.” Phone 4045 4045 to make your appointment now.

Quick Tips to Sparkling, Streak Free Windows!

• Add sparkle to the house with gleaming windows. Use a sprayon window cleaning products or a bucket of water mixed with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. • Dip the scrubbing sponge in the soapy water and wash the glass, working at all angles to get into the

edges of the window. • Starting at a top corner, drag the squeegee down the window, keeping the edge in contact with the glass. • Use a soft lint-free cloth to wipe the squeegee blade dry then start at the top again, overlapping the previous stroke by about 50mm.

• Wipe up excess water along the base and around the perimeter of the window as you work your way along the glass. • After cleaning glass with water and a squeegee, use a microfibre cloth for a completely streak-free finish.

Building your new home

on a sloping site. That’s great as elevated land will give you good views and breeze, but be prepared for some extra costs when building on sloping sites. I am always going on about the land as I think it is the most important factor in building a new home. If the home doesn’t suit the land then we as designers and builders haven’t done the best job for you, the client. There are many builders around and not all of them are experienced in this type of construction so when you are talking to the builder or designer ask them what else needs to be done to your land. For instance what drainage should you allow to cater for correct run off of the monsoonal rains; do you need to retain any of the land to give you a flat usable area for yard space; will you be building at a height that will give you the best views from your land; can you include anything now that will make it easier for construction of a future swimming pool; will the home have the best orientation to get the

natural cooling breezes into your home. And of course how much will all of this cost. Once you have established your available total $$ budget then look at what other site costs will need to be allowed for, possibly a swimming pool or landscaping, then this will give you a realistic budget for the house construction. Quite often it is less expensive to include some of this preparation in the initial construction rather than as a one cost off further down the track. Experienced builders will be able to do a conceptual budget for your new home proposal and that will help determine whether what you want is within financial reach. I’ve had clients come to me and say that the builder they have been dealing with will build them a fantastic house within their budget only to find out they have to pay for extra earthworks, retaining walls or drainage and they have just blown their budget. Driving safely in wet weather Living in Tropical North Queensland, it doesn’t take long to realise driving in wet weather can be very dangerous. You should prepare and frequently maintain your vehicle to make sure you will always be as safe as possible when driving in wet conditions.

To get your vehicle ready for driving in wet weather make sure: • you have good tyre tread (at least 1.5mm deep across the whole tyre width) • all of your vehicle’s lights work well your windscreen and lights are clean. We recommend you look at weather forecasts, listen to road condition updates, and plan your drive before heading out on long trips. This will help you to avoid driving in and around unsafe conditions. However, our weather can change dramatically, even within the space of a

short drive. When you find yourself in unexpected wet weather (such as a quick moving storm), follow these safety tips.

In wet conditions: • drive slowly—to avoid aquaplaning and skidding • drive with your lights on low beam (it is easier to see with low beam in fog) • use your air conditioner or demister to keep your windscreen clear of condensation • double the distance been you and the car in front

• avoid breaking suddenly or accelerating or turning quickly—to reduce your chances of skidding • do not drive on unsealed roads • use road line markings to stay in the middle of your lane—in wet weather it is more important than ever to stay in the correct position on the road • do not drive on roads covered with water (even partially covered) • watch out for landslides—heavy rain can cause layers of rock and soil to move • stay away from stagnant water by the side of the road (it can be very bad for your health).

Every detail is taken care of, from help with wording the invitations through to arranging the wedding night of your dreams. As Cairns’ leading five-star wedding venue, the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino offers five ceremony locations and six reception venues, providing options to suit the largest weddings to the most intimate occasions. Boasting unsurpassed views over Trinity Inlet from the deck of the tropical pool, the venue also provides a brilliant backdrop for vibrant, lively wedding photos. And in 2014 the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino has introduced the exclusive ‘Crystal’ wedding package, featuring a set of Riedel Crystal Champagne Flutes in addition to pre-dinner canapés, main meal, beverages and reception styling. All this is delivered by a team of experienced, professional wedding specialists, headed by events and wedding coordinator Rebecca Jones. She is a Qualified Wedding Planner having completed my Diploma in Wedding Planning, Styling & Design in November 2013 with distinction. “Our wedding packages offer an all-inclusive price, which makes it so much easier for busy couples knowing it’s a set price and everything is done for them,” she said. “We work with some of Cairns’ leading suppliers to ensure each wedding is everything the couple wants it to be, from styling the room in their chosen colour and style, through to the perfect wedding menu created by our Executive Chef and his team.” Special accommodation rates are offered for wedding guests, with many couples travelling long distances to be married at the

73

venue. The bride and groom are also treated to complimentary accommodation in a stunning Junior Suite on the night of the wedding, complete with a champagne breakfast served to their room the following morning. To ensure a smooth and seamless experience, Rebecca is in regular contact with couples from the time of the booking. “I like to get in touch with the bride by telephone or in person to really engage with their hopes and dreams for their special day,” she said. “I also send them a full wedding planning kit with checklists, ideas and tips which is something brides can use to keep all their paperwork together. Then every month in the lead up to the wedding I send each bride our newsletter with more tips, inspirational photos, ideas and news on what is happening here at our hotel. “I believe that when a Bride and Groom choose to share their special day with us, they are also sharing it with me on a personal level. I am the first person they meet and I am here the whole way through the planning process and on the big day. It is such an honour and pleasure to be able to do this job and I absolutely love it. Every couple is unique and that is the best thing about wedding planning, no two days are ever the same.” Contact Rebecca: Tel +61 7 4030 8713 Fax +61 7 4030 8788 Email - weddings@reefcasino.com.au

FOUTSIS & nick jean PARSONS DIAMONDS & TIME

Good things come in small packages. It’s an old saying that certainly rings true when it comes to jewellery – and especially so when it comes to rings. Whether you’re looking for the perfect engagement ring or a set of wedding bands, Diamonds and Time can help. Together, owners Nick Foutsis and Jean Parsons have over 70 years’ experience in the jewellery industry. Trained by master jewellers in Greece, Nick has been manufacturing jewellery in Cairns for two generations, while Jean has an unrivalled passion for helping customers create unique designs. “Some clients have their minds made up, but we encourage everyone to try different styles and designs,” Jean said. “Some clients leave with something completely different to what they thought they wanted.” Diamonds and Time offers a wide array of ready-made engagement and diamond rings, as well as a large selection of diamonds and coloured gemstones. The onsite workshop allows customers to take advantage of a full range of services including repairs, resizing, remodelling and setting missing stones. This allows for a fully personalised service for those customers wishing to remodel a family heirloom for a wedding or engagement ring. It is this old-fashioned commitment to quality service that has seen Diamonds and Time become a trusted name in wedding

75

jewellery. Originally Diamonds and Gold, the business operated for 30 years at the one location under Nick and his former business partner Harvey. The store has been known as Diamonds and Time since 2008 when Harvey retired and Jean, who worked in the original business, partnered with Nick. Since then, Jean has been invited to join in the journey of countless couples. “I love the thrill of seeing the clients’ reactions, seeing the excitement on their faces and having them come back to share their memories and photos with us,” she said. “We get to see their relationships blossom, and being introduced to their babies is awesome. “We are also very experienced at keeping secrets, especially if one party has already been in and purchased a ring!” As the name suggests, Diamonds and Time also stocks a range of watches, with labels including Seiko, Citizen, Casio G-Shock, Baby-G, Morellato and Classique. Watches are often a popular option for engagement gifts for men, or as a special gift for the father of the bride, best man or groomsmen.

For all of your wedding jewellery needs, see the team at Diamonds and Time, 10B Shields Street, Cairns.

PALMER PEPPERMINT LANE PHOTOGRAPHY

If a picture says a thousand words, then Stephanie Palmer is most certainly in the business of storytelling. As owner of Peppermint Lane Photography she has the unique privilege of documenting and celebrating the most intimate and significant moments in her client’s lives. Treating each assignment as a new adventure, her fascination with people and their stories is more than just a business, it’s a way of life. Originally from England, Steph’s love affair with photography ignited while travelling through outback Australia. “I began documenting my family adventures and the people we met whilst living in the communities,” she says. “I fell in love with capturing faces and emotion in its rawest form.” After settling in Cairns in 2011, she finally made the decision to pursue her passion by setting up her own photography business. “Peppermint Lane was the name of a dream retro lolly shop I always wanted to own – possibly to consume sweets all day,” she laughs, “But the name itself seemed to fit my vibrant, quirky style – so I used it.” Specialising in wedding and lifestyle photography, Steph is also a regular monthly contributor to CairnsLife magazine. “Faces fascinate me and I have always been rather curious of people and emotions,” she says. “I’m also hugely inspired by music so you can imagine my delight

at weddings when these two inspirations of mine meet.” Steph’s friendly approach and genuine love for her craft, allows her to capture her clients most candid moments – as well as her own. “I find inspiration everyday, especially in my darling son Bailey,” she says. “I’m lucky to have a super supportive family, especially my partner Jason who has been my number one fan and encouraged me to dive head first into my dreams...no matter how terrifying that might be.” Despite 2013 being a year of many highlights for Peppermint Lane Photography, Steph says the feeling of making people “cry happy tears” when they relive their special day will never get old. “I love being invited into people’s lives to capture their most precious moments, and I also like surrounding myself with love, happiness and cake,” she laughs. “But even though I plan to continue being a part of the wonderful world of weddings for a long time yet, there are many other exciting things in store for Peppermint Lane.”

kailee MOSS FLORIST GARDENS

Kailee Moss might look young. And she is. But when it comes to flowers, she knows what she’s talking about. At 21, Kailee is a qualified florist with five years’ industry experience and owner of her own floristry business since 2011. She was one week shy of her 19th birthday when she purchased Florist Gardens at Mt Sheridan, where she had worked since she was 17. “My family were surprised when I decided to buy it and my friends were even more shocked, because I’ve never been a real girly girl. Definitely not the kind to be playing with flowers,” she said. “Now I have flowers everywhere. And all my friends always have flowers. People ask me which flowers are my favourite, but I can’t pick, every week it changes.” Kailee’s unexpected career in floristry began just after she left school. “The florist was the first place to call me back, and I wasn’t too keen in the beginning. “Within a week I fell in love with it. Now I’ll definitely be a florist forever.” While waiting for settlement on the shop, Kailee completed a Certificate III in Floristry. “You can never learn too much, and it helps, especially when people can’t see past my age and only see a little girl behind the counter, at least I have that certificate with my name on the wall that shows I know what I’m talking about.” Just ten months after taking over the business, Kailee faced another challenge. The Mt Sheridan Plaza was being redeveloped, and she had the expensive and time consuming task of fitting out a new shop. She said it was difficult, but it also allowed her to put a personal touch on the presentation of her business. Florist Gardens has since built a reputation for stocking some of the freshest and longest-lasting flowers in Cairns, with Kailee sourcing as much of her stock as possible from the Tablelands. Staying local has also kept prices down, making Florist Gardens renowned for being the most affordable florist in the region. “Sourcing flowers locally can be a challenge because you never know when there could be a cyclone, and that can take supplies out for months,” she said. “It’s always a nervous wait in the lead up to Valentine’s Day, because all of my roses come from the Tablelands. But it’s worth it. The flowers I stock are grown in the tropics and they last longer in this climate because of that.” It is that high quality and low price that has made Florist Gardens a leading choice for brides across Cairns and the greater Far North. Each wedding is a showcase of Kailee’s talent and the business has grown rapidly after brides have seen her work at other ceremonies and receptions. “I absolutely love everything to do with weddings and all of the preparation and planning that goes with them,” she said. “I especially love when I have brides who are open to my ideas and suggestions so I can be more creative. And I personally deliver the flowers free of charge while the bride is getting ready so they can be featured in the photographs of those special moments.”

M U RR AY PASSION FOR CAKES

The infamous words ‘let them eat cake’ takes on a whole new meaning for the bride and groom who want their dream wedding cake to taste as good as it looks. So it’s not surprising the fine marriage of talent and skill, combined with an insatiable desire for perfection possessed by cake specialists Lorraine and Iain Murray is in high demand. This extraordinary couple, both qualified chefs with a background of creating culinary delights in top five-star hotels, made the decision to bring their business, Passion for Cakes to the Cairns region seven years ago and haven’t looked back since. “It was a lifestyle choice,” says Lorraine. “We were looking for an alternative to shift work and city life in Sydney with the opportunity to create our own business.” “We headed north to Brisbane for a while before making Kewarra Beach home.” From their private studio, Lorraine and Iain create exquisite, custom made cakes with a personal touch and attention to detail - from the initial consultation with the bride and groom, to the high standard of ingredients used which includes biodynamic free range eggs, to the intrinsic hand crafted decorative features of each cake, and its carefully executed delivery to the reception venue. Lorraine candidly admits that part of Passion for Cakes’ success is working together, yet allowing each other to focus on their specific areas of speciality. “Iain sources the ingredients, does the baking plus the deliveries, and I liaise with the bride and ice and decorate the cakes,” she says. With a giggle Lorraine also comments that having their own separate work spaces lends to a smooth operation and a high quality product every time. It’s this quality control in working together without employing anyone else or sending work out that gives them a leading edge in this specialist industry. So does Lorraine have a favourite style of wedding cake? She says she can’t just pick one. “If I was a bride today I would find it difficult to choose with so many styles in traditional to quirky themed varieties and the flavour options. I’d have to let my husband-to-be decide!” However, Lorraine reveals that cupcakes are very popular, and versatile for beach weddings, or inspirational for the vintage wedding theme, ensconced in delicate little paper lace cups. Traditional cakes remain well suited for grand hotel-style weddings, and themed cakes go anywhere. “Each cake is personally delivered with great care, taking into consideration the timing and location of the reception,” says Lorraine. “It’s lovely to be a part of a couple’s special day, and often there is a lump in our throats when couples send us photos of them enjoying their cake.” “It is truly rewarding work!” Hi Lorraine, I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for the amazing cake you created, it was absolutely delicious and everyone was suitably impressed by it. My mum thought it was absolutely perfect for the occasion as she adores the old kombi vans and thought it was just rad- she took a photo of it and has framed it as a piece of art! Thanks again for getting it done so quickly and accurately and I think it turned out better than even I had hoped for. Regards, Jessica Blackman

After being encouraged by a friend to DJ at his wedding in late 2000, I decided to embark on a new venture and Millennium Weddings came to be. How long have you been working in the Wedding industry? I have enjoyed working in the Wedding Industry since 2001 and have obtained many happy memories along the way as well as being fortunate to build some incredible relationships with both clients and industry professionals alike.

After working more than 1200 weddings in North Queensland, what is your most memorable moment? As you can imagine there are many, many memorable moments, however one occasion that comes to mind was when I persuaded a bride’s parents to dance with each other when unbeknown to me they had been separated for many years and could barely force a smile. The following morning I received a phone call from the bride thanking me for rekindling their relationship. What is your favourite aspect of the job? I guess the answer to this question would simply be, Knowing that our clients have had an amazing time, and that the Millennium team have been a big part it. There is no greater reward than complementing the biggest event in someone’s life. What was the most enjoyable ceremony you worked at and why? There have been many memorable ceremonies, we have had brides arrive by helicopter, speedboats, Harley Davidson’s and Quad bikes to name a few. We have had a Groom and three Groomsman arrive on water-skis at Palm Cove (Fully Suited) and a groom by parachute in Mossman, however the one that sticks in my mind the most was a Wedding at Paradise Palms where a bride arrived sidesaddle on a Draught horse with the Bridesmaids entering from a different direction, completely rehearsed and sequenced to music. All the while, the Groom had no idea what was going on. What is the most unique service you offer? As well as the usual Ceremonies, Receptions and Mood Lighting packages available, I think the very popular “Life Stories” DVD slideshows would have to be our most unique service. These are professionally edited and produced slideshows in DVD format, with musical

backing and effects that literally bring the clients photos to life. These are a great feature to have at a reception to show the life journey of our Bride and Groom thus far. How many staff do you have? Millennium Weddings consists of a team of 3 full time DJs. All our staff are long standing and have performed literally hundreds of weddings in the NQ area. We pride ourselves on performance results and always attempt to make each event better than the last. What is the best advice you can give couples who are about to start planning their big day? Firstly, Plan your budget, set a figure and try and stay within your own financial boundaries. Look at the aspects of your big day and think about what is important to you, then shop accordingly. I believe there are certain costs you simply can’t afford to cut , and yes entertainment is one of them. If I was planning a wedding for myself my top priorities would be Venue/ Catering, Celebrant, Photography / Video and Entertainment. Always keep in mind that many suppliers book out months in advance especially Celebrants, Photography and Entertainment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of your potential suppliers and seek referrals. A well known Cairns Photographer recently posted on facebook that “Cheap & Good Rarely Go Together”. This is true, try not to cut budget too much on the important aspects of your wedding. On a reassuring note, Cairns is blessed with hundreds of the best wedding professionals and venues in Australia, “Enjoy The Ride” If you could have any other job in the world, what would it be and why? To be honest I have absolutely no idea. I love what I do now and haven’t really thought beyond that.

HOW TO DO A CLEANSING DIET

Before a Wedding Choose a cleansing diet by researching on the Internet and then deciding which type of diet is for you. If you normally eat a fairly healthy diet and do not need to lose much weight, you may be able to just add psyllium to your diet for cleansing. The natural fiber of psyllium will work in your colon to remove build-up of toxins and waste. Select the Master Cleanser Diet, sometimes known as the Lemonade Diet, if you need to lose weight quickly. A popular diet among Hollywood celebrities who are preparing for a film or television appearance, the Master Cleanser Diet is extreme, yet safe if done properly. The diet plan combines three unusual ingredients, lemon juice, grade B maple syrup and cayenne pepper, to detoxify your system. Mix two tablespoons of lemon juice, two tablespoons of maple syrup and two pinches of cayenne pepper into half a litre of purified water. Drink this combination throughout the day whenever you are thirsty or hungry. Do not eat any other food. Follow this diet for 3-7 days for maximum results. It is best to do this diet about two weeks before your wedding. After finishing the diet, eat healthy leading up to your wedding date. Try to eat organic foods, no sugar or white flour, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Go on a diet of pure vegetable juice, if the Master Cleansing Diet is too strict for you. Combine organic lettuce, cucumbers, celery, carrots and spinach in a blender with purified water. Drink this blended drink whenever you feel hungry throughout the day. Also make sure to drink additional water daily. This diet can be used for up to 14 days before your wedding.

PRISTINE WEDDING & EVENTS

Kelly Small started Pristine Weddings and Events in 2010 with 100 chair covers and a desire to return to a field she loved. Three years on she had left her personal touch on more than 300 weddings across Far North Queensland, and made lasting friendships with many of her clients along the way. Pristine Weddings and Events prides itself on creating stunning designs for ceremonies and receptions, each as individual and unique as the bride and groom. With a wide range of furniture and accessories available for hire, Kelly can accommodate all budgets and themes, or offer inspiration and styling ideas of her own. “All couples and their ideas of the perfect wedding are very different, so it’s always an interesting experience to help each couple achieve their ideal wedding setting,” Kelly said. “I set all weddings as if they were my own. I take pride in delivering the highest possible quality every time, helping to create the perfect wedding and amazing memories.” Kelly and her young family made the seachange to Cairns from New South Wales in January of 2010. When she struggled to find work, Kelly decided to start her own business. Having owned her own bridal shop in New South Wales, Kelly enjoyed the flexibility, reward and satisfaction that came with being a small business owner. “I remember saying to my husband ‘I was happiest when I used to set weddings in New South Wales’ so I took the plunge and I have never looked back. “I’m very lucky to have a happy balance. I don’t miss any school events and I’m home every afternoon when my boys get home from school.” Pristine Weddings and Events has had a dramatic rise to success, setting 30 weddings in the first 12 months, and growing to four times that number the following year. Kelly worked on 170 weddings last year, and is on track to reach at least 200 in 2014. “I love the journey I go on with every bride who comes to me, which can sometimes last 12 or 18 months,” she said. “The one thing I love most is the reaction of the brides when they first see their setting. The satisfaction you feel is just amazing and I have made some beautiful friendships. “The most special moments are when I receive a text or email thanking me, some have brought me to tears. I once received a text from one of my brides during her reception, she just wanted to say the room looked amazing and to thank me. And two of my brides have even invited me to be a part of their special day.” TESTIMONIALS “Kelly, Oh my gosh all I can say is WOW WOW WOW!! Everything with the ceremony and reception was absolutely perfect!! I was awestruck and cannot thank-you enough. You made it a very easy process and everything was exactly how I had imagined. Everyone the whole night was commenting on how beautiful the decorations & theming was! We cannot thank-you enough.” - Cass & Trav “Hey honey! My goodness where to start? Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping make our day so beautiful. You made it better than we ever imagined, it was perfect! Our tribute to you from our speech: Another special thank you goes to Bianca and all the staff here at Paradise Palms Resort, and especially Kelly Small our Wedding Decorator who has made our day extra special with her beautiful touches.’ A two year journey together, not only did I have the best day of my life so far, I made a great friend...you!” “To the amazing Kel!! Thank you from the bottom of our heart for making our wedding day and the planning leading up to it unbelievable!!! Your friendship has truly been amazing! The styling on the day was just perfect!! Please keep in touch.” Bec & Nath xxxoooxxx

ISLAND

Orpheus offers the ultimate in luxury for weddings, elopements and honeymoons alike. The secluded island stretches across 11km of immaculate coastline and offers a private, romantic hideaway in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. The lodge features lavish accommodation, exclusive island and reef activities, beauty and relaxation treatments at the on-site day spa and the island’s signature dining experience, Dining with the Tides – a private dinner for two on the pier with views overlooking the Coral Sea. With just 14 rooms accommodating 28 guests, couples can take advantage of exclusive use of the island and enjoy the days before or after the wedding with their closest friends and family. Couples have the choice of making their own arrangements or the island’s wedding specialists can tailor a package for them. The options include the wedding celebrant, photographer, hair and makeup artist, wedding cake, entertainment, furniture, decorations and flowers, right down to the buttonholes and corsages. The Orpheus culinary team works with each couple to hand-craft an exclusive wedding menu. A bounty of locally-sourced, wholesome and freshly grown and caught seasonal delights are available, served as a traditional three-course dinner, roving canapés, a degustation display, or laid-back buffet. The all-inclusive guest rates incorporate all gourmet meals including the reception, selected regional wines, beers and soft drinks, one nature-based experience each day and unlimited use of motorised dinghies, catamarans, paddleboards and kayaks. Located just 80km north of Townsville, access to Orpheus is via a spectacular helicopter journey from Townsville or Cairns Airport over the picturesque coral-studded sea. Nestled in the sheltered Hazard Bay on the western-side of the island, the lodge and its accommodation is laid without fanfare along a ribbon of serene beach and is positioned perfectly to take in the breathtaking evening sunsets. Orpheus has played host to countless intimate weddings and honeymoons over the past 80 years, and its popularity continues to grow, while remaining one of the reef ’s best kept secrets.

Daintree ECO LODGE & SPA

The Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa offers a unique wedding destination in the world’s oldest living rainforest. Couples and their guests can enjoy luxury accommodation in the treetops, an onsite day spa with intimate couples’ treatments and access to a vast array of tours and activities to enjoy before or after their big day. Nestled on the banks of the Daintree River, 100km north of Cairns, this world-renowned venue is also home to the Julaymba Restaurant, which has been described as one of Australia’s leading dining experiences. All this and more is included in the various wedding packages on offer, which can be tailored to suit each couple’s needs with the help of the onsite wedding coordinator. “The Eco Lodge is a boutique property and takes great pride in attention to detail,” says general manager Scott Campbell. “We also offer unique touches that make your wedding day extra special, including traditional aboriginal smoking ceremonies, corroboree dance performances and traditional didgeridoo music played by a local aboriginal artist.” Brides and grooms can relax knowing every detail will be taken care of, from booking guest accommodation, the wedding celebrant and hair and makeup artists, to creating the wedding setting of their dreams and preparing worldclass meals for them and their guests to enjoy. “With all of the staff at the Lodge eager to make each wedding a magical and memorable experience, celebrating your wedding at the Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa is one you will never forget,” Scott says. The Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa is a sister property of Orpheus. Combined wedding and honeymoon packages across both properties allow couples to experience the magic of both the rainforest and the reef, with private helicopter transfers also available.

COOLRIDES

CA N E

Imagine running out of fuel and starting your long walk to the petrol station when a wedding car stops and the bride and groom inside offer you a lift. That’s just one of the many memorable adventures had on a CoolRides wedding transfer, driven by owner and classic car enthusiast Bob Cane. “The guy was baffled as to why anyone would do that on their wedding day so after we took him to the petrol station he returned the favour by offering a bottle of champagne,” Bob recalls. “We went to a drive-through and he purchased two very nice bottles of champagne to share with his new friends. By the time we reached his car he was no longer able to drive, so the bride and groom invited him to join them at their reception.” CoolRides is committed to creating memorable moments for all occasions, and specialises in wedding transfers in Cairns, Port Douglas, the Northern Beaches, Kuranda and the Tablelands. Parties of up to six can cruise in style and luxury in a 1959 Cadillac Convertible or the 1957 GM Pontiac Super Chief. Passengers are treated to the superstar experience, with red carpet, ice, eskies, wine buckets, water and glasses supplied free of charge so the bridal party can enjoy their favourite drop during the cruise. “I really enjoy seeing people with a smile on their face as they cruise around in style,” Bob says. “They feel special, something happens as soon as they get in the vehicles. I suppose it’s because they feel like it’s their car, and for that day it is.”

97

One passenger took that ownership a little too literally after having his blindfold removed to the see the Cadillac Convertible in his driveway. “He was so excited he began to cry and I have seen a lot of joyous reactions when people see the Cadillac but never anything quite like this,” Bob laughs. “Not long after he realised the Cadillac was not his to keep and I think he almost cried again.” CoolRides was established four years ago, born from Bob’s passion for classic cars and a desire to share his appreciation with others. “There’s something about the way they were made back then, they were made to last, and they will forever if we take care of them. So I decided to let people share my interest and have a chance to ride in a classic vehicle instead of just seeing one at a show or in a magazine.” To secure a CoolRides adventure of your own for your wedding day, contact Bob with your date, locations and number of passengers. And strap yourself in for a ride to remember. www.CoolRides.com.au “Get there the Cool way” Contact - coolrides@mail.com 0404 721 288

DACRE STELLA LIFE SPA

Many of you are fortunate enough to know Suzannah Dacre, the skin and health specialist many people consider ‘God’ when it comes to their wellbeing – even the surgeons themselves. Suzannah Dacre is a medically trained Dermal Specialist and Physical Therapist, and she has gained the reputation for genuine care and real results in the region, being in demand in both the surgical and rehabilitation worlds. Suzannah commenced helping people improve their wellbeing from a young age, but commenced her professional care in the industry in 2004, when she completed her trade studies in physical therapy and dermal sciences. Once finished school, being a doctor wasn’t enough for Suzannah, so she completed her tertiary studies, and specialised in dermal rehabilitation and physical rehabilitation on a medical level. Her results are one of a kind due to her knowledge, and her expertise is trusted by many doctors, specialists and surgeons. Stella Life Spa is the brainchild of Suzannah, the haven where she offers total wellbeing care, and life changing results with medical expertise. Each and every one of the Stella services and products are one-of-a-kind, and either award winning or world exclusive. All therapies are tailored medical formulations exclusive to Stella, all organic and Australian made, prescribed to the patient’s needs, to ensure genuine results. Stella Health by Stella Life Spa are the trusted health specialists for lifestyle health and medical rehabilitation, including weight management, nutrition, pre and post natal rehabilitation, acute injury rehabilitation, chronic disease management, youth health, over 50s health, and post surgical rehabilitation. Whilst others train the external systems through diet principles and military style workouts, Suzannah’s rehabilitation principle accommodates all body types, by curing injury, rehabilitating the physical system, and training it to become the powerhouse the body needs to be to achieve results. Good health also contributes to good skin … “The skin shows everything going on inside – it’s the wellbeing map of the body”. As a Dermal Specialist, the only one of her kind, Suzannah works on rehabilitation principle by improving the health of the skin on all layers – not poisoning it. “The days of inducing trauma to the skin using chemicals are over – that only scares the infection on the surface, bleaching it, and poisoning it, not curing it where it originates…” Suzannah achieves her results by improving the health of the skin from the inside through good health principles, then perfects the surface by working with the DNA of the origin dermal layer, clearing the infection, resulting in beautiful skin that has no memory to dysfunction. There has not been a condition that she has not been able to successfully treat as of yet, in both the physical and skin fields. “We turn every stone to ensure the very best of results for our patients, an unparalleled level of care”. With an appointment list booked four years in advance, and online consultations spanning the country and overseas, clients travel from as far as Canberra to see this specialist.

The word ‘catering’ conjures up images of food served on silver platters, and little else. But for Port Douglas Catering and Events, the food is just the beginning. Established in 1992, the business has built a reputation as a one stop shop, offering a comprehensive range of products and services for weddings and other events. The list includes equipment hire, lighting and themed decorations, as well as a personal wedding co-ordinator and referrals for all your wedding hair, makeup and photography needs. And they don’t only cater for engagement parties and weddings. Port Douglas Catering and Events can also serve up sumptuous meals and delicious appetizers at pre-wedding gatherings, recovery breakfasts and the popular family lunches and picnics the following day. Best of all, the team at Port Douglas Catering and Events takes care of everything, so all you have to do is enjoy the day, and the food. “We always respond to enquiries immediately,” said marketing and events manager Bec McLean. “When you book a wedding with us, we take on the details and responsibilities of the planning for your wedding like venue bookings. With that, we take care of the insurance and liability issues that are required to hire public venues, alleviating any added stress and paperwork involved with the bookings.” Port Douglas Catering and Events can work to a wide range of budgets, with a selection including the popular cocktail function, seated plated meals, banquet, tapas, degustation or an intimate dinner for two. “We have long-term staff that are dedicated and have a genuine

‘care factor’ attitude,” Bec said. “They are attentive, professional and we don’t skimp on staff levels. Our serving portions are always generous. We have a great relationship with our suppliers and all in all the whole event runs like clockwork. We also have access to great locations and venues.” With that in mind, it’s little surprise Port Douglas Catering and Events has been the recipient of major national accolades for several years running. In 2007, the team tried their luck at the Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence– and took home the regional award for Far North Queensland Wedding Caterer of the Year and State Wedding Caterer of the Year, which took them to the national awards as a finalist. Since then, they have gone on to win Regional Caterer of Year, 2007, 2008 & 2013, Best Wedding Caterer 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013, Best Event Caterer (regional) 2008 and 2010, and National Finalists 2007, 2008 and 2013. But most rewarding are the simplest moments. “For us, it is the memorable speeches at the weddings, these are very personal and heartfelt moments at a very special time in a person’s life,” Bec said. “And of course there is the overwhelming appreciation after the wedding is done and our client’s ‘dream wedding’ has exceeded all their expectations. This is definitely a feel good industry and to be such a big part of someone’s special day is very gratifying”

The breathtaking beauty of Far North Queensland makes for unforgettable weddings and stunning photographs. Paronella Park combines that renowned beauty with the unique setting of a Spanish castle – creating a spectacular backdrop for wedding ceremonies and photo shoots alike. Voted by Vogue Magazine as one of the top three wedding destinations in Australia, Paronella Park has become a popular choice for even the most discerning couples to celebrate their special day. And only a limited number of couples can be married at the Park each year to ensure the experience remains exclusive and unique. “Paronella Park is a venue tailor-made for romance,” says Wedding and Events Coordinator Bridget Evans. “There are beautiful photography opportunities everywhere you look. Castles, waterfalls, tree-lined pathways, dramatic bamboo walkways, bridges, tunnels – the list goes on. Beloved by locals and visitors alike, your wedding will be a talking point for years to come, and the timeless beauty of your wedding photos will speak for themselves.” Wedding ceremonies and photo shoots can be staged in the grounds of Paronella Park, while receptions can be hosted at the recently acquired Mena Creek Hotel. Situated just 200 metres from the Park grounds, the heritage-style hotel specialises in country-style fine dining, prepared by experienced chefs. Cabin accommodation is also available onsite, perfect for wedding guests travelling long distances. Bridget says the team at Paronella Park can take care of every last detail of your wedding day. “I have the support of an incredible team headed up by Wedding Assistant Alana Sciacca. “Interestingly, Alana’s Grandparents were the first-ever couple to get married at Paronella Park, so she has a real connection with the venue.” That first wedding was in 1935, when the Park’s designer and builder José Paronella opened the gardens to the public. “The Park’s extravagant ballroom was, for many years, the first choice for weddings and celebrations, however this abruptly ended in 1979 when a fire tore through the building,” Bridget says. “Now, 75 years on, Paronella Park’s owners have appointed a dedicated team to ensure once again, the grounds are gorgeous and filled with happy wedding guests, beautiful brides, and nervous grooms.” Present day owners Mark and Judy Evans purchased the Park in 1993 and formulated a plan to put Paronella Park back on the map. They see the Park as a work of art, and work on maintaining and preserving, rather than rebuilding. Small restoration projects have been undertaken, pathways uncovered and improved, and the Museum, an ongoing project, is continuously being enhanced.

weddings? In more traditional times when it came time for a happy couple to tie the knot, it was tradition for the bride’s family to pay for a majority of the wedding. This was great news for the groom’s family, but now in the 21st century times have changed and that tradition is not as common as it use to be.

ccording to past traditions the bride’s family were in charge of paying for the engagement party, ceremony, reception, the bride’s wedding dress, the photographer, and all the flowers. The groom’s family were then responsible for the rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon. In this day and age it is often found that both partners in a relationship work, and are now paying for their own weddings. Depending on the individuals and how extravagant they want their wedding to be will determine how long they will have to save up for their special day, with some even taking out loans. With many wedding costing tens of thousands of dollars most parents can’t afford to pay for the whole event. With parents still wanting to contribute to the wedding they may make their gift to the bride and groom a bar tab for the reception, hosting the engagement party or rehearsal dinner, helping with some of the wedding costs, or giving a gift like the other guests. Weddings are a day that unite two people in marriage, and previously marked their first day of cohabitation. Now in our modern age many couples already live together, own houses together, and even have children before getting married. As we keep progressing into the future many traditions are becoming a thing of the past and new traditions are being formed in their place.

THE DI AMOND G A L L E RY H A S B E E N A T R U ST E D N A ME I N QUALI TY J E WE L L E RY F OR G E N E R AT ION S. Time and time again, owner Keith Bird is called upon to design and sell engagement and wedding rings to the sons and daughters of customers who bought their rings from him decades before. It’s a passion spanning almost 40 years, beginning when Keith left his career as an accountant in Sydney for a seachange to Cairns in 1975. It was then he took the first steps of turning his hobby of fossicking for opals and sapphires into a high-profile career in the jewellery trade. “Any time I had spare I would go to Lightning Ridge digging opals, thinking I was going to hit it rich,” he laughs. “You start to appreciate their value when you try to dig them. There’s a lot of Australia between each one.” Keith initially owned and managed the Cairns branch of the Sapphire and Opal Centre before establishing The Diamond Gallery in 1978. He studied diamond grading with the prestigious Gemological Institute of America, qualifying in 1981, before studying Colour Gemstones the following year. He was required to grade and submit a number of diamonds and stones for examination, which he still uses in his work today to compare stone clarity and colours. The Diamond Gallery team developed a reputation as leading diamond specialists, and was located in Abbott Street for 30 years before relocating to its current site on Lake Street. Today the prestige jeweller stocks mostly 18 carat gold jewellery and specialises in the highly-sought after rare pink diamonds

from Western Australia. Customers regularly travel from as far as Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide to access The Diamond Gallery’s exclusive line of jewellery and unmatched expertise. The Diamond Gallery’s staff have a combined total of more than 140 years’ experience in the industry, providing customers with peace of mind when selecting jewellery for themselves or a loved one. “We still offer the good-old-fashioned, personalised service a lot of people look for when making a purchase as big and significant as a wedding or engagement ring,” Keith said. “We meet people from every walk of life you can imagine, and some absolutely fascinating people.” Keith says the industry has come a long way since his early days, but classic jewellery trends have remained the same. He said the traditional Brilliant cut solitaire diamond was still by far the most popular choice for engagement rings, followed by Princess and Cushion cut diamonds. “It’s unique in that it’s one of the only trends that never seems to change,” Keith said. “You can look at a ring made in the 70s and one made today and not know the difference.” To view the range of exquisite jewellery visit The Diamond Gallery at 54 Lake Street, Cairns.
