Here we are at the end of another year. December is a time of reflection on the successes and challenges of the past twelve months, and on our hopes for the year to come. Everyone makes New Year’s resolutions, but we don’t actually know what the ensuing months will have in store for us. What we do know is what we’ve achieved. Did you accomplish ALL your New Year’s resolutions from last year, or previous years? Most of us never do. We tend to make New Year’s resolutions because there’s something missing, and we need to set that goal to attain it. As the months roll on, you may find your drive waning, and many of us will quickly revert back to old

habits. “I’ve still got the rest of the year,” we tell ourselves. It’s promising to have big aspirations, but allow yourself to set shorter, more attainable goals in between. Set goals each month, and be realistic. What do you want to accomplish in that month? How will you actually achieve it? Once you’ve achieved a goal, add to your list in subsequent months. This month’s issue is about celebrating achievements, and local success stories to inspire us to achieve our full potential. From the team at Cairns Life, we wish you and your loved ones Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays! We look forward to seeing you in 2015!

Our Cairns winner Bailee is very much a young model of the moment, she is confident and has those wonderful small features that the international market is looking at. We are very excited to be developing her through her school years, then launching her Internationally, says Ursula Hufnagl Managing Director of Chic Model Management

Bailee O’Neil Winner of the ‘Face of Cair ns Central’ B y S tacy Wong

The glamour of makeup, hair, clothing and thrilling catwalks is enough to entice most girls who dream of becoming a model. For most, the dream is rarely discovered. But our cover girl, local Cairns teenager Bailee O’Neil has been given the opportunity of a lifetime as the winner of Cairns Central’s inaugural ambassador program ‘Face of Cairns Central.’ Bailee has taken part in a professional photoshoot for Cairns Central’s Spring/Summer Fashion campaign, joining a number of professional models on location to photograph this season’s hottest fashion and trends. As the winner of the program, Bailee also secured a one-year contract with international talent agency, Chic Management – one of the world’s most respected agencies. At 15, she joins the agency with the likes of high-profile models including Samantha Harris and Catherine McNeil, both originally signed by the agency. “We are so excited to provide Bailee with this opportunity to get one step closer to her dreams of becoming a model. The centre has a passion for nurturing and uncovering local talent, providing platforms for them to launch their careers. Bailee has done a stellar job so far as one of our ambassadors and we can’t wait to see her face up in lights on the cover of Cairns Life Magazine,” says Louise Struber, Cairns Central Marketing Executive.

Bailee – Behind the Face: Why did you enter the contest? I did it last year, and got into the finals. That was really exciting and I wanted to experience it again. What was your reaction to winning? Ultimate shock. I never thought that I would win because I was younger than all the other contestants. What do your family and friends think? They were very excited when I won. They are proud of me and supportive of my pursuits in being a model. What are you most looking forward to? Gaining firsthand experiences that will boost my confidence, and being natural in front of the camera. What will you be doing over the holidays? I will be going down to Chic Model Management for a workshop and professional photoshoot. Favourite part of modelling? The experiences and the excitement of it – nothingʼs ever the same, itʼs always different. And itʼs fun getting all done up.

FNQ Plastics

Winner of TNQ 20 Award for Tropical Innovation in Manufacturing By Stacy Wong The TNQ 20 Awards have been a Cairns Regional Council initiative for strengthening the region’s reputation as a hub for tropical innovation and business excellence. Since 2010, this initiative has celebrated the achievements of our region, recognizing the quality of business activity in Far North Queensland and promoted beyond the tropics.

FNQ Plastics won for it’s innovative Grizzly Poly Ute Trays. As Far North Queensland’s custom design acrylic and plastic fabrication specialists, FNQ Plastics have built Australia’s first plastic utility tray. Designed and manufactured in Australia, the Grizzly Poly Ute Trays are stick-free, featuring a tough and strong finish that is not susceptible to rust and harsh chemicals. “We are really happy with winning the innovation award. We were up for three awards, and were finalists in two other categories – business innovation and design, and build in construction environment,” say owners Col and Lesley Van Staveren.

Since September 2013, we’ve built 2 tipper trucks that were for the tree loping industry, and 9 ute trays that were for the pool maintenance, concreting and painting industries. The advantage of the Grizzly Poly Ute Trays is that they are rust-free, extremely durable and can sustain harsh chemicals, unlike other ute trays on the market.”

Having bought the business 7 years ago, Col and Lesley have seen tremendous growth over the years. “Col has been in plastics for 27 years. We started out as a small backstreet business, and have since increased the business 4 times. Our business is extremely diverse as we cover almost every market; there are so many facets to the business. There’s rarely a job we can’t do.” “We are proud of our reputation for delivering high quality, affordable solutions to businesses and individuals in the automotive, marine, mining, scientific, agricultural and fishing industries across Queensland. A lot of people come to us because they can rely on our quality Australian-made products.” “In May, we relocated to our new location on Mulgrave, which is 3 times the size of our previous location, allowing more manufacturing and storage opportunities. We currently have the biggest plastics laser cutter in the Far North.” “We’ve got a really skilled team. A lot of what we do is custom designed and built. Our team sits down with customers to figure out exactly what they need.” How do they stay so innovative? Col laughs, “Beer! And listening to what people want.

22

CairnsLife

We are always looking for new and better ways to improve our products and services, always expanding and changing. In the future, we are looking at overseas project and direct imports to offer the best pricing to our clients, and keeping projects focused up North.” FNQ Plastics is also the only distributor of Trex Decking in Cairns. Trex products are extremely weather-resistant and never need painting or staining for protection, a maintenance-free alternative to wooden decking. “Trex is the only brand with a 25-year warranty. They offer unmatched good looks and longevity, and will never rot, crack or splinter.”

SPECIALISED Speech Services Winner of CBWC Award for Small Business Owner After graduating in Speech Pathology, Gail Rogers followed her other passion to travel the world – exploring The Rockies in Canada and working in England. A couple years passed and she finally settled in Cairns after landing a job with a local speech pathologist. Gail made the move to start Specialised Speech Services three years ago, and in May this year won the CBWC Award for Small Business Owner. By Stacy Wong Top Photo Credit: Azure Photography, Bottom: Stacy Wong

That was a big event and a huge surprise. The award is about reflecting and celebrating the business. It’s not just me, but the team that should be celebrated. It’s important that all team members are valued. There was a lot of team work that went into my application,” says Gail.

“I love what I do, working with clients and meeting new people. I have an innate desire to travel, which is satisfied here in Cairns as you can easily catch a plane to go somewhere else.” “My interest is voice, developing and coaching people’s voices effectively. The main goal of our Vocal Boot Camps is to help people enhance their voices in oral presentations and daily speaking tasks. After the GFC, people and businesses lost interest in education and training, but there’s an increasing interest and value in local training workshops. Face-to-face contact is so important. We’ve lost some of that with technology.” “I really enjoy working with our team of Allied health professionals who have determination and drive to provide more services in Cairns and Far North Queensland. People need more, and knowing we’ve done the absolute best for our clients is rewarding.”

“We have a passion for people to have greater health. You have to have passion and be affective to be successful in health. It’s exciting to see changes and improvements in people’s lives.

Peking Duck with Pancakes, and our new Shao Mai (pork and prawn original Dim Sum) will no doubt be popular dishes during the festive season,” Ray said. It’s the Cairns establishment’s 11th win at the Restaurant and Catering Awards, after holding the title from 2000 to 2009. Café China’s Ray Sou says staff are delighted to see the return of the trophy, and looking forward to another successful year in 2015. Bookings for Christmas functions and regular dining during the busy festive season are now available at Café China’s flagship Seafood Restaurant at the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino. And there’ll be more than a few tasty options on the menu. “Peking Duck with Pancakes, and our new Shao Mai (pork and prawn original Dim Sum) will no doubt be popular dishes during the festive season,” Ray said. CLEAN CARE Cairns

Winner of the TNQ20 Workforce Diversity Award

Clean Care Cairns is recognised for valuing differences, fostering diversity and creating an inclusive workplace. Writing & Photography

By Stacy Wong

Caring About Quality and Service” Reaction to winning: We were elated. One of the major objectives of the partners – Worklink, Centacare Cairns and Aftercare – when establishing Clean Care Cairns (Clean Care) as a not-for-profit social enterprise, was to develop a diverse and inclusive workforce to assist people who are marginalised to regain employment. The award recognises this achievement, so it was very satisfying. What makes you a star? Undoubtedly the stars are staff and customers. Our staff successfully embraced all criteria and techniques to succeed at achieving high quality outcomes. While 29% of staff moved into open employment, this is not a requirement of the organisation, but rather a reflection of the support and skill-building Clean Care provides. Also stars – our local businesses that supported Clean Care and had the confidence and willingness to embrace change.

What brought you to this achievement? It was about staying true to our vision and business objectives. These included tailoring inductions based on cultural aspects, respecting all cultures, one-on-one mentoring to build confidence and esteem, particularly in the early stages, and forming close relationships with specialised employment services to develop a mutual understanding. Our secret weapon was the partners whose governance, courage and business acumen inspired us to seek the highest levels of success. What’s your secret to success? Our company motto is “Caring About Quality and Service.” We truly believe this and strive continuously to achieve our commitment. Staff are competently trained in policy and techniques, thus delivering the highest quality outcomes for our customers. We recognised the need to regularly communicate with our customers, and seek all forms of feedback ensuring a high quality return.

CairnsLife

What’s in store for 2015’s road to success? We believe the formula we currently use is working well; so we will continue promoting Clean Care Cairns as a value for money cleaning company offering personalised service. Our early focus was on securing business with service providers and commercial clients. However, there is exciting potential for future expansion and diversification in the form of value adding and specialised machinery purchasing.

Fiducia Private Wealth Management

Finding the right Financial Advisor can be a daunting task, particularly when the entire profession has been under an intense media spotlight in light of poor practices in bank owned financial planning businesses in recent times

By Stacy Wong

With over 20 years’ experience in financial services Danny Maher, Principal of Fiducia Private Wealth Management is one of Far North Queensland’s most experienced financial professionals. One of Fiducia’s main points of difference is that they are not aligned to AMP or one of the big banks and their focus is on providing sound strategic advice and reliable outcomes to their clients rather than meeting product sales targets that are so often the case in bank or institutionally owned practices. “Financial planning is not about the money; it’s about the people. It’s about assisting people to achieve their lifestyle objectives. A lot of people think financial planning is just about investing, but it’s about best utilising people’s resources to deliver reliable outcomes,” says Danny. “This focus has seen Fiducia grow steadily as clients appreciate the genuine interest in their success and in helping them achieve their goals. They also appreciate the transparency in a genuine fee for service approach. “Expansion is currently underway as well with the business merging this month with another likeminded practice. The merger will bring additional scale to the business but will also allow it to expand its services particularly in the area of Self-managed Superannuation advice and administration.” “More and more people are looking to take a more active role in the management of their superannuation in terms of investment decisions as well as a means of reducing fees. The growth in Self-Managed superannuation (SMSF)

bears testimony to this however it is complex and the penalties for getting it wrong can be heavy, getting the right advice is vitally important.” “At Fiducia, we have accredited SMSF specialist advisers and an experienced administration and support capability in house which is somewhat unique in Far North Queensland.” In twenty years Danny has seen a lot of things happen in investment markets ranging from our local community through to global phenomenon like the GFC “When you’ve been in this business for as long as I have, you see all of the market gyrations – all its ups and downs. You quickly learn that you can’t control markets.” “The best thing to do is to hold a diverse portfolio of good quality assets, and hold them for the right reasons. People get into trouble when they start to speculate. We avoid anything speculative and concentrate on buying quality assets that represent value.” “In terms of the local economy, obviously it’s been through some pretty hard times and I don’t think we’re out of the woods just yet. There seems to be a lot of ‘Aquis or Bust’ mentality which creates uncertainty.” It is good to see there’s construction starting again in the city and tourism has bounced back nicely. The challenge is to diversify the industries that contribute to the Cairns economy. We’re still too reliant on tourism and we need to explore opportunities in other sectors. Despite the upcoming expansion of

32

CairnsLife

Fiducia, Danny assures clients that Fiducia will maintain a personalised approach. “I don’t want to be the biggest in town” Although this merger will double the size of the current practice, I want to maintain the intimacy with clients and the personalised approach to advice. Large institutionally owned firms can tend to become ‘sausage factories’ where the advice is tailored to selling a product and not to the individual needs of the clients. People often ask what “Fiducia” means… It stands for Trust Confidence and Assurance and that is what we seek to build in every client relationship

Andrew Thomas is proudly at the helm of Dixon Homes Cairns. The Dixon Group has almost two decades of being the largest home building group in Queensland. This multi-award winning group is reputably known as one of the most respected new home builders in Australia. “We’ve been around a long time, and are trusted within the market place. We value add with quality products – our dedicated team ensures quality and consistency in all our products and homes,” “It’s really rewarding seeing customers come back time and time again – client satisfaction is an important measure of our success. We inspire customers by creating stylish, contemporary, and livable homes that they enjoy.” “As a leader, I inspire my team to be proud of the work they produce, each project is a success and achievement they should be proud of.” “There can be a lot of turnover in the industry. However, we maintain longstanding relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and most of our staff members have been with us for many years.” Andrew credits the company’s success to the longevity. “If you do something long

enough, you should be good at it. You tend to just get better at it as you go.” “It’s challenging every day; I love how the days are always different. Interactions with customers are rewarding, and working with an incredible team.”

What’s in store of 2015’s road to success? “Things are getting busier. We are seeing the markets pick up, and there is more investment from down South – people are looking to build up here.” “We’re finalising work on the Forest Gardens development, and the Tranquillity land sub-division (at the top of Bentley Park) will be released. There will be 6 new display homes available for 2015 in Cairns and 4 in our Townsville display village.”

TAFE

Queensland North

You probably have seen the latest TAFE Queensland advertising campaign. In cinemas, in press, on radio, on TV, on billboards and on the buses, TAFE showed how vocational educational and training students; the ‘doers’ in life, gain the practical skills to do extraordinary things and make great happen. The campaign focussed on how TAFE training can change and improve people’s lives. In 2014 TAFE Queensland North has gone through its own changes. The amalgamation this year of Cairns, Townsville and Mount Isa TAFE campuses under the banner of TAFE Queensland North, has meant that training is now being delivered to more than 25,000 regional, national and international students annually and 2,500 apprentices and trainees in training at any one time at the 17 TAFE Queensland North campuses. General Manager, Joann Pyne said that as the largest provider of vocational education and training in North Queensland, TAFE Queensland North has the power to set the benchmark for quality skills training in the region.

“TAFE Queensland North is a reinvigorated organisation where people have access to more choices, more teachers and a greater range of study options,” Ms Pyne said. “The teachers we employ are highly experienced industry professionals who deliver training using the latest technologies. Students can gain the practical skills that lead to employment. “We are passionate about the opportunities that TAFE training provides and I really believe that at this time of the year when people are considering their options for the New Year, there has never been a better time to consider vocational education and training at TAFE and perhaps begin your pathway to higher education,” Ms Pyne said. In the New Year, TAFE Queensland North will have additional full time, part time and short courses for people to consider, with many courses available to be studied externally. Students will have the flexibility to complete their training on or off campus and learn in a way that suits their life style. TAFE Queensland North also encourages people to consider Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL is an assessment only pathway which gives people the chance to

have their current skills and work experience recognised to count towards a formal qualification. Depending on the chosen course of study, TAFE Queensland North has various financial assistance schemes and training subsidies available, including the Certificate 3 Guarantee program and VET FEE-HELP, to assist students with their tuition fees. In the New Year TAFE Queensland North is encouraging people to take a renewed look at the direction their lives are taking and to consider vocational education and training. Joann Pyne wishes all Cairns Life readers a happy Christmas and a New Year full of big achievements.

customer-centred business to master marketing.” – David Inches

By Michelle Dryburgh

Whether you’re managing home care services or an international construction company, marketing is a must to drive growth. As founder and principal consultant of Inspired by Marketing, David Inches has delivered on more than 100 successful marketing projects right across Australia, from national brands like Brown Brothers winery and Wrest Point Casino to prominent local firms including Allaro Homes. “My business model is quite unique. I’m not the designer, website developer or public relations guru. I’m the marketing director with big business experience who manages the team to follow a compelling marketing strategy and plan.” With 20 years’ marketing and management experience, David has a proven record for helping businesses develop and launch new products and services, reposition brands to competitive advantage, focus advertising and promotions and supercharge online engagement and sales. “As long as they walk in the door committed to marketing, we’re on our way,” he says. David’s approach to marketing places the customer along side commercial realities and objectives to shape customer centred and profitable outcomes for business and organisations.

“I love nothing more than successfully launching a new brand, marketing campaign or sponsorship program that cracks the mould. While not every project requires a game changer, it’s the opportunity to think differently that inspires me.” David’s Marketing Audit starts the ball rolling on new projects, uncovering a series of common marketing pitfalls. Among them are inconsistent brand image and logo design, neglected websites, missed PR opportunities and failure to embrace social media. But one of the most common mistakes he sees businesses make is targeting the wrong markets or customers. “Do your homework to determine the size, characteristics and the attractiveness of each market and customer segment to your business. Heading east looking for a sunset won’t work no matter how much you spend.” Making decisions without consulting customers and investing in the wrong message are regular errors. But David believes the worst of all is running without a marketing plan. “Ad-hoc marketing is possibly the biggest risk, usually leading to overspending on a miss directed message across a poor media mix,” David says. “A simple marketing plan will eradicate these common marketing mistakes by leading you through an opportunity and 35

customer-centred process of marketing research, strategy development and implementation planning. Download a template online or appoint a specialist to focus your efforts and increase your return.” While leading successful projects for major companies has its rewards, David says it’s often the family businesses with a big vision that delivers the greatest satisfaction. “For example working with visionaries like Allaro Homes for the past five years has been a blast. New tourism developments are also exciting,” David says. “It’s the people. I’m always meeting bright enthusiastic people who are on a road to greatness, and best of all, I get to be an integral part of their team.”

Once a year, Argyle Diamonds issues a special release of outstanding Pink Diamonds known as “the Pink Diamond Tender”, that are sold by special bids to 150 inviteonly international buyers. INNER-CITY VIBE

FOR RESTAURANT, BAR & POOL WITH A VIEW

This summer, make time to enjoy the cool, new inner-city vibe that is making a splash poolside at Mercure Cairns Harbourside.

I

n perfect timing for the festive season now upon us, Mercure Cairns Harbourside has unveiled its $2 million pool and alfresco dining redevelopment with stunning results. General manager, Paul Morton and his team are understandably proud of the hotel’s new facilities, which they claim take the whole dining, and relaxation experience up more than a few notches.

Paul Morton General manager

“We are keen to get the word out that what we have here is special. The best way to do that is invite our locals to experience it first hand – be it for sundowners after work, dinner with friends, cocktail parties or a relaxing weekend escape.” 40

According to Mr Morton, the elegant new surroundings comprise a completely new swimming pool and spa, along with marble tiled terrace and indoor-outdoor dining and bar area; all designed to successfully capture the beauty of Mercure’s waterfront location. “From a style point of view, the changes have successfully achieved a sophisticated, elegant and cool, inner-city vibe completely in keeping with our tropical lifestyle. We especially love how the pool and dining area interact seamlessly with our Esplanade outlook capturing sea breezes and views to the Coral Sea that are uninterrupted thanks to the pool’s glass fencing panels that provide an infinity edge. We also have contemporary new furniture which includes pieces by renowned French designer, Philippe Starck.” Mr Morton also said that while the changes have had a significant impact on the quality of facilities and tropical ambience, they were undertaken strategically to provide practical solutions to outdoor relaxation, entertaining and special events. “In addition to our recently upgraded accommodation and experience when it comes to professionally staging events, what we now guarantee, is a choice of venues to suit all outcomes and situations. If rain is threatening a poolside cocktail party, shelter is assured thanks to a state-of-the-art self-closing louvred vergola and interconnecting doors from bar and restaurant to terrace and pool. While not interfering with the stunning outlook, these can be completely opened or closed to suit.”

new year, new courage By Stacy Wong We’ve heard it before time and time again, “New Year, New You.” But really, how new is this ‘New You?’ We have all entertained the thought of reinventing ourselves, but reinvention requires change – the mere thought of which will usually evoke fear in most of us. Fear of the unknown leaves us paralysed and unwilling to change. We come up with notions negating our overinflated sense of entitlement, telling ourselves that surely we can’t possibly achieve that dream or goal. Stop wishing!

Change requires courage – taking that giant leap of faith into the unknown. It’s a scary thing, but most rewarding in the end. Take action and find your courage to change:

• Recognise and acknowledge that you want to make a change in your life. • Make steps to set that goal into action. • Give yourself a timeline. • Keep a journal to log activities and ideas. • Talk to friends and use your networks to inspire and help you achieve your plans. • Own it. Enjoy every step as a milestone.

dream of a White Christmas, with Eggnogs and Snowmen, sipping hot drinks, rugged up in beanies, gloves and trench coats, standing around the fire desperately trying to keep warm. The feast begins, out comes the Turkey, the beautifully glazed Baked Ham, and the Roast Pork with all the trimmings…. AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!....it’s not a dream it’s a nightmare…….. NO SEAFOOD! Wake up, wake up……I stir to the sounds of kids running in the street showing off their new toys. The vibrations and roar from the blender making our favourite Mango Daiquiris for breakfast, the POP of a cork from a refreshing bottle of Moscato, the sizzle of Bacon and Eggs, the fresh aromas of a tropical fruit salad, the cascading laughter of adults and kids in the pool, the rustling of wrapping paper, the cool

re:hab Deb Bauer OWNER When did you take over Re:hab? The retransformation of Lake Street opened this great opportunity to us and we grabbed a hold of it with both hands. We embarked on this journey mid-May 2014 and strive to push the envelop when it comes to serving elegant espresso, sexy smoothies, magical meals and jealousyinducing juices. Why a coffee shop? From a childhood goal to an adulthood reality, a local family-owned and operated café is a dream come true for me. I feel the family vibe makes the Re:hab experience unique and personal, a true break from the daily grind. When you step on our welcome mat and lounge on our cosy, randomlyretro furnishings, you become part of our family, as it should be.

What do you love about owning a café? The day-in, day-out interaction with the people of Cairns. Business people, elderly people, our beloved regulars and groovy school kids – we love people from all walks of life. Serving up delish food and supremo coffee to lovely peeps is what we live for.

Where are your coffee beans from? What’s special about your coffee? Our signature espresso blend is sourced from mostly Central American coffees, and roasted in Melbourne. The idea behind the blend is to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. This blend offers complexity and depth with a sweet, caramel, nutty finish. When skilfully mixed with milk, this espresso delivers a refined, zesty experience.

otel School Cairns provides an education that combines the skills and knowledge to be successful in the vibrant hospitality and tourism industry.

“Our students are guided by professionals with a wealth of experience in the industry, and who enjoy sharing their knowledge with the future generation of leaders.” “All aspects of our curriculum, as well as our presentation standards, including the Hotel School Cairns uniform, have been designed in consultation with the industry. Our students learn valuable skills including communication, leadership, accounting, marketing and hospitality foundations.” “Our practical approach and hands-on learning engages students and provides an interactive learning environment. Additionally, all students participate in work placements within the industry throughout the program. Predominantly, the students are assessed through the use of projects, case-studies and practical activities to reflect an actual workplace.” Hotel School Cairns’ programs are designed to enable students to work on a casual or part-time basis while undertaking their studies. Students are assisted to source employment, and work preparation including resumé writing, mock interviews, personal grooming and work experience are essential in preparing students for employment. “The program is further enhanced by the inclusion of excursions to various locations on the Tablelands and the Barrier Reef. This has a double benefit of exposing the students to the beautiful tropical region in which we live, while at the same time providing them with invaluable local knowledge.”

Targeted recruitment in 2015 with Staffing Solution

W

e all know the importance of upskilling, presenting ourselves professionally for job interviews and being on time. But after 50 years in the hospitality and recruitment industries, Franca Forde looks for something even more. “Attitude. We can train anyone to do anything, but they need the right attitude to make it work,” she says. “If someone walks in my door with that, I’ll take them in and train them until we’ve got a star.” As the founding director of Staffing Solution, Franca specialises in finding the right people for the right jobs and helps businesses adopt a more efficient, targeted approach to recruitment. Her team of dedicated consultants, combined with her own wealth of experience provides employers with peace of mind, making the often stressful process of hiring staff a smooth-sailing process. After a stellar year in 2014, Franca and her team are preparing for another exciting year ahead, successfully landing a new major contract. The team is also at the ready for the influx of job vacancies come February when much of Cairns’ transient workforce moves south to escape the wet season. “You should never stop learning, but now is a good time to take up some training to get prepared for job openings,” Franca suggests to jobseekers. “Never stop looking for work, there’s always something out there.” Similarly, she reminds employers skilled

people are always looking for work, and encourages businesses to contact her to discuss current and future workforce needs. Staffing Solution has access to a substantial database of quality applicants ready to fill any vacancy. With the process of credential and reference checks already complete, this means positions can often be filled without the need for advertising or recruitment campaigns. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Staffing Solution is now located in sparkling new premises on Grafton Street, complete with state-of-the-art training facilities. As well as specialised recruitment services, Staffing Solution offers in-house and offsite hospitality training, including housekeeping, food and beverage and customer service. “Our aim is to train all staff to deliver the five-star service people experience down south and overseas,” says Franca. “Cairns is growing and people come here with high expectations. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, great service is core to everything you do.” As Cairns grows, so too does the Staffing Solution team. Franca will welcome a new ‘dream team’ of consultants in January and is feeling optimistic about the future of both her company, and the city. She supports the proposed new developments including the Aquis casino and believes growth is vital for the region’s economy. “You can see change happening, it’s just around the corner,” she says. “It’s it a bit like expecting a baby. You know it’s coming, you just don’t know when.”

December Health Check

FNQ Independent Living Support Association Inc

I nternational Day of P e o p l e wi t h D i s a b i l i t y December 3 is International Day of People with Disability.

By Michelle Dryburgh

PHOTOGRAPHY by Stacy wong

It is a United Nations-sanctioned event aiming to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability worldwide and celebrate their achievements and contributions. Closer to home, it also shines the spotlight on the important work of local disability services, like FNQ Independent Living Support Association (FNQILSA). FNQILSA is a government funded service providing disability support programs, including in-home assistance for people with physical disability and mental illness, delivered in a positive, non-intrusive manner. Formed in 1997, FNQILSA has helped hundreds of people overcome barriers at home, work and play to regain independence and live life to the full. It was created by a small group of people who received government funding for their own disabilities, but wanted more control over the support they received. “FNQILSA became a service specific to peoples’ needs, run by people with a disability themselves,” says CEO Neil Luckett. “In supporting people rather than doing for people we have witnessed many successes and milestones within the individual lives of clients choosing to utilise our services.” While increased accessibility and equity

regulations are making life easier for people with disabilities, Neil admits there are still improvements to be made. “People with a disability are the minority and often things are designed and built for the broader able-bodied population,” Neil says. “Our members often come across simple mistakes, such as a pedestrian push button pole in a garden bed, a gutter that is way too deep or steep for wheelchairs, or an accessible car-park without nearby curb access,” Neil says. FNQILSA consists of a small management group, committee and 77 support workers who assist in the homes of 94 clients throughout Far North Queensland, as far afield as Mackay. Recently the committee formed the ‘Accessibility Crusaders’ group which aims to promote the sharing of accessibility trouble spots. Using mobile phones, group members can easily document any dangers or access issues as they find them. “The benefit of the group is that parents with prams, the frail and aged, returned service men and women, and other people facing specific impairments could benefit from the work of this group,” says Neil. “Most committee members are ‘wheelies’ themselves and have all got their own unfortunate story of being trapped

58

CairnsLife

somewhere due to an accessibility issue.” Members of the group are also involved with liaising with local government to improve accessibility of public facilities, pathways, parking spaces and public amenities. Among them is Gail Harris, one of the founding members and clients of FNQILSA. An avid bushwalker before an accident left her in a wheelchair, Gail has been an advocate for improving accessibility for more than 30 years, including helping to advise National Parks in Brisbane how to improve access to facilities and walking tracks. Vice President Arnold Budd also assists in this area, volunteering with local government on access and equity issues, with a long history as an accessibility advocate.

With Matilda’s Styling, as this was for her High School Formal and such an important occasion we started with a design consultation and designed a style suited to Matilda and her stunning Red Dress, we Curled the hair on a barrel wand then Braided a Halo around the hairline from a centre part for a cross of Old Hollywood and Modern chic.

Colour Specialist

With Matilda’s Colour, we started with adding a pre-treatment and Protector to her Scalp and a Protein equalizer to the hair for guaranteed protection. We then Lightened the roots, and balanced and toned the lengths to clean the hair and add luminosity. Beautifully Platinum.

Make Up Artistry

With Matilda’s makeup we started by evening out her skin tone by using a skin coloured based concealer under the eyes to correct the darkness and a green based concealer to cover some redness we then used contouring and highlighting to bring out her cheek bones to give her that flawless appearance. We wanted to go heavy and bold on the eyes, so we started with a deep black and grey Smokey eye and finished with adding a touch of deep mahogany red to the centre of the eye lid to bring out the blue in her eyes. We then applied a generous coating of Mascara and black liner to tie it altogether.Too complete Matilda’s look we gave her a pale red lip and a dusting of Blush.

Carly

Artist

BARFOOT Who are you and what do you do? My name is Carly Barfoot and I have been a makeup artist for 6 years, working in Cairns, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Photos supplied by Stacy Wong

What has inspired you to work for yourself? In the past I have worked for Estee Lauder, Clinique and Napoleon Perdis. I learnt so much from every experience and I thought it was time I should work for myself. It is such a rewarding job and I love being part of someone’s special day. Why did you decide to pursue a career in makeup? It is actually quite funny, but my grandma and my mother both worked for Estee Lauder. But it wasn’t until I had the opportunity to work for Estee Lauder, in V Pharmacy Smithfield, came up that I realised that this was my calling. I loved every minute of it then, and still do now. What is the most challenging situation you have been faced with since starting your own business? When there are special events like race day, when many people want their makeup done, it’s hard to fit everyone in even though I wish I could! If you could make up anyone, who would it be and why? I would love to make anyone up who is going through a hard time in their life, just to make them feel special again. I once had a lovely client who was going through chemotherapy and had lost her eyebrows from the treatment, I will never forget her reaction when I showed her

how to draw her eyebrows back on. She cried with relief as she felt herself again. Even though it may seem like a small component, it was a big deal for her, and I’m glad I could be a part of that. What do you love most about your job? I love making people happy, watching people transform, and teaching someone how to use makeup and brushes to achieve the look they want themselves. I also love playing with different colours, and being able to use my creative side. What is your favourite new product and why? That a tough one, I have so many! But I am a big believer in taking care of your skin, so a serum and primer are a must! Napoleon Radiance Boosting Primer is currently my new favourite product. I was already in love with the Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot primer, and this one adds that additional glow to the skin that I absolutely love at the moment. The primer helps to give my skin that dewy look, keeps my foundation in place, and helps to keep my skin hydrated. What is your fondest memory throughout your career? I once had a client who was making the transition from male to female, and after having me do her makeup and gaining her trust she would come visit me every week. On her weekly visits she would ask me her opinion on what she was wearing and what she could do to improve her overall look, and to help gain her selfconfidence. Having these weekly visits was fun for me and I loved seeing her confidence grow.

Hair Help with HANNAH

Beautiful hair

is healthy hair No matter what colour, style or cut you have, your tresses won’t look their best if your hair isn’t healthy. Maintain your locks with the following tips from Salon owner Hannah Lane. Trim off split ends – The only way to banish split ends is to trim. It’s not just what you put on your hair; no amount of serum or treatments will reseal split ends. The longer it’s left unmanaged, the higher the hair will split and the more you need to cut off. A regular “fairy trim” every 6-8 weeks will keep your hair growing longer, faster and healthier. Quality Shampoo and Conditioner – Use a formula that is prescribed for your hair type. Keune offers an excellent variety of hair care and styling products for different hair and scalp types such as colour care, moisture, men’s range, energizing (for thinning hair) and blonde. We also offer an organic range that’s paraben-free, sulphate-free, not tested on animals and purely plant-based. And they all smell divine! Re-access your products regularly – Your hair changes throughout the year with different seasons. Personally, when summer hits, my hair turns to frizz. To beat the frizz, I use a moisturising shampoo with an intense treatment as conditioner. The extra protein and hydration tames my hair down to be more manageable. Speak to your stylist about what products you should be using and when/how they should be used.

Business partnerships take on a variety of forms. Some start out as friendships, and some run in the family. Business ventures blossom from these relationships when like minds put heads together with a shared vision and mission in mind. Ambition and trust are the keys to building a lasting partnership. But the true success of a business is in the strength of the relationship between partners and their complementary talents.

By Stacy Wong

A Perfect Partnership Finding the perfect partner in business is no easy task. Finding that special someone to share your life with is even harder. But for the owners of RJ New Designs, Richard and Julie Johnston, theirs is a perfect partnership at both work and home. RJ New Designs was created to deliver a onestop shop when it comes to online solutions. Covering everything from domain name registration and hosting, to web design and development, specialising in customised WordPress sites, to copy writing, WordPress training courses and Google AdWords, RJ New Designs does it all. Having started the business 10 years ago, RJ New Designs is very much a collaborative venture between Richard and Julie, at work and home. “The internet is a bit like relationships; always evolving, keeping life interesting. You have to stay focussed and committed to achieve the best outcomes.”

“We both bring different skills to the table – Richard being web development and design, mine being copy writing and marketing. This allows us to offer one-stop solutions, including content creation,” says Julie. “We make it easier for our customers to get websites online, because traditionally it’s coming up with the content that is quite hard for people to do.” “We consolidated our strengths to develop a business model, filling a hole in the market. The fact that we have complementary rather than competing skills, makes it easy to work together.” Julie says that flexibility, sharing the workload and being organized are essential for their

Combining over 65 years of experience, they created an integrated firm that offers tax & accounting services along with wealth management for clients on a personal level. “It’s the three of us working together, but more importantly we are working with the client as well. Our point of difference is that we – the partners – are the direct contacts for all our clients. We have guaranteed access to partners; we don’t pass them along to the staff. We deal with all our clients directly.” “We are all chartered accountants by trade and have worked together since 2002. We have all worked for bigger firms in the past, and learned from those experiences.” “With a smaller firm, we can easily communicate between directors. Knowing more about clients allows us to give good advice in all aspects of their interests. Whether it’s business advice, superannuation, taxation or financial planning. Each piece makes the whole stronger when considered together.

“Working together for 12 years, we know each others’ strengths and weaknesses. Our complementary skills and different perspectives make it possible for us to come up with successful strategies that will work for our clients.” “A compliment to our success is when our clients refer other clients. We’ve had strong growth in our firm, but more importantly we get a kick out of getting a good outcome for every client.”

However, the partners advise against going at it alone. “Regulations with selfmanaged supers are tricky; you need an expert to help you navigate through the complexities.”

“The relationship of our partnership goes beyond the business. We get to know our clients personally. Often we get to know the client and their family, and we visit the business to get a feel for it, not just the figures. We are professional and personal.” “We are all locals; so we understand the local market and business.” “A business client can come to us as a one-stopshop. Norship Marine Writing & Photography

By Stacy Wong

Norship Marine (Norship) is a family-owned company specializing in vessel maintenance and repair services in Cairns. The Fry family, known within the industry since 1948 for founding the world-renowned shipbuilding company NQEA, established Norship in 1984.

Les Callaghan – Yard Manager Jenny Fulmer – Operations Support

“The business grew from what started as a workshop in my grandfather’s yard. Then my father, Ray Fry, took on the Norship side, servicing trawlers and the boating community. Back then, there was a lack of repair places for fishermen,” says Corporate Services Manager, Robyn Fry. Fast-track 30 years, Norship’s facilities have evolved to cater to servicing all vessel types and operations. “It’s totally different now. Due to government regulations, limiting fishing, our market changed. We saw less fishing boats, so we needed to adapt to changing markets. Norship had to evolve to grow the company in its servicing capabilities,” says CEO Allen Meiring. “We have two travel lifts on site which haul out the vessels and allow us to do the refit works on site. We have a 160 tonne travel lift and a 400 tonne travel lift. The 400 tonne travel lift was designed and built by Ray Fry and this machine did its first lift in 2009.” “Norship’s advantage is that we have a large yard space, and aren’t limited with constraints in space or time. We offer a facility where we can lift the vessel and work on-site; it’s more accommodating and flexible to suit our clients’ needs.” In collaboration with a prime defence contractor, which won the contract for government vessels, Norship’s biggest customer is Defence and Australian Customs. “We still continue to service a range of vessels, including fishing vessels, white boats (high end pleasure crafts), tourism vessels and tug boats.” “We have a competent staff with many years of experience who determine the servicing needs with the owners. Our expert team is highly proficient – we have naval architects and a team of experienced engineers, techs and specialists in their fields. Each vessel refit has its own problems to solve and our team work to solve them in the most efficient manner. They work closely with a network to constantly improve, it’s a continual learning curve.” “We know what we can do well, and we do it well. If there’s anything we can’t do, we have an extensive and reliable network to achieve our clients’ needs. Norship is extremely stringent when it comes to quality control. We are careful of who we allow on-site and who we allow to service our customers’ vessels.” “Norship operates a Quality Management System and is accredited to AS/NZS ISO 9001 standard for the repair and refit of vessels up to 400 tonne. Our Quality Assurance manager maintains and makes continual improvements to the system.” “Through continuous improvement, we do try to become better and better to develop the business in servicing the industry’s growing demands while maintaining focus on the individual needs of our new and loyal customers,” says Robyn.

Kay’s Sewing Centre They’ll have you in stitches Writing & Photography

By Stacy Wong

Sandra Grasso never thought she would follow in her mother’s footsteps; but when her mum decided to sell Kay’s Fabrics, Sandra and her husband Kevin couldn’t help but take over the family business The family-owned shop has now rebranded to Kay’s Sewing Centre (Kay’s), and moved to a new location at 304 Mulgrave Road. “The new shop is larger and brighter. We have a lot more space for everything now, and can accommodate bigger classes. There is also rear access for easy wheelchair and machine trolley bag access to the store,” says Sandra. “I moved back to Cairns from Townsville when mum and dad decided to sell the shop 9 years ago. Mum and dad (Kay and Allan) wanted to retire, so Kevin and I decided we should just do it. Mum bought me my first sewing machine when I was 8 and taught me how to sew because I questioned her endlessly about what she was making and why she was doing it that way – I never thought I’d take over the business.” “I wanted to keep the business in the family; mum and dad had it for 35 years. It was nice to come back to Cairns. My two daughters learned to sew from their grandmother – they basically got brought up in the shop – this was their daycare centre.” “Mum still comes in every day to help out, even though she retired 9 years ago. I admire her passion, stamina and her drive to always try and learn something different. It’s very easy to work with her; the only tiffs we have are over fabric colours, and mum always wins,” Sandra laughs. “It’s a joy to work together and get to talk to each other every day. She’s not just my mum, but a friend – we have a really good relationship. Not everyone gets to see their families every day; I’m very lucky.” “We love it! It’s a craft - it’s not like going to work. For Sandra and anyone learning how to sew, it’s not ‘work’ that you get bored with. You want to come to work, and you want to actually be here to help people, and see the enjoyment on their faces,” says Kay. “It’s so much fun coming to work. We get to sit down and sew, doing what we enjoy and help people to do what is a lot of fun. Mum enjoyed coming to work every day, and I wanted that too,” says Sandra. “Ladies have compared our shop to the female version of Bunnings; I love it.” Sandra and Kay both enjoy helping their customers create beautiful sewing projects. Kay’s offers a variety of sewing classes for patchwork, runners, quilts and dressmaking. They also offer free lessons with any purchase of a sewing machine. “We run a SEW Club as well, which is a demonstration day once a month. Anyone is welcome to join. Members can attend a monthly demonstration, and then also receive 10% discount off fabric and haby for 12 months. Christmas party SEW Club is a lot of fun, held in appreciation for our members.” Kay’s sells a wide range of brands – Janome, Brother, Babylock, Husqvarna Viking, Embroidery and Sewing machines and Overlockers; and products with over 6000 bolts of cotton fabric, perfect for quilting. “We also have embroidery services. Get Out of Your Mind and Back Into Your Life By Michelle Maher

O ur min d h as th e am az ing abi l it y t o inv e nt ne w things, se e th e beauty in nature, and se t goal s to achiev e our gre atest des i r es .

H

owever, our mind also has the ability to take us to places we don’t want to go; self-doubt and criticism, worry about the future, constantly thinking about the past and mistakes we may have made, and comparing ourselves negatively to others. For many people it can reach a point where it feels like our thoughts are rushing and we can’t keep up. Unfortunately when our mind is rushing, we tend to get caught up in what it has to tell us and tend to take it all really seriously. When we get caught up in our thoughts, it is like an automatic switch to feelings and we can start to feel angry, sad, jealous, or fearful. As humans we tend to get stuck in these thoughts and feelings and stop living the life we want to. So what would happen if you could get out of your mind and back into your life? Would you play more with your children,

feel more content and confident at work, have a better relationship with your partner, or get enjoyment from your daily activities? What if you could actually learn to live in this moment, the exact moment you are experiencing right now and not have your mind provide a running commentary about it? Every moment there is an opportunity to be present, to be in the now. To pay attention or connect with what we are doing. This increases our awareness and we tend to get more out of life. Some things to try include: • Pay attention to your breathing, nothing else, just breathing in and out; • Hear the music or radio or TV and really connect with the words. Switch off other distractions (do you really need to have the radio and TV on as well as chat to someone?)

• Taste your food like it is the first time you have eaten. Take in the smells, the colours, and textures of the food. Take your time to eat rather than gobble it down quickly! • Walk with purpose and notice what you see and hear and smell. You can also really connect with your body. How does it feel when you walk? • Play with your children. Get down on their level and for five minutes be in their world. Use your imagination, laugh and see the world through their eyes. Dinner can wait! When we engage with the now, our mind can keep talking to us, but we learn to not always listen and can make a choice to focus on what is important to us. So go on, try it, get out of your mind and back into your life!

FESTIVE SEASON

Urology Problems Over the Festive Season there is an increase in a number of Urological problems. First, the increase in consumption of alcohol, particularly large volumes of beer can lead to “overfilling” of the bladder and then an inability to pass urine. This is usually on a background of obstruction of the bladder by an enlarged prostate. It is usually necessary to have a catheter inserted to empty the bladder. If a man receives a blow to the abdomen in this situation it is possible to rupture the bladder. When men or women consume large quantities of alcohol sometimes they are not able to control the bladder and may wet themselves. Also, under the influence of alcohol and other drugs, it is possible to have a greater chance of injury to the penis and testicles as the result of performing “dares” and other acts of “bravado”. The chance of penis trauma during intercourse under the influence of drugs or alcohol is also increased as the penis can be fractured if inhibitions are reduced and care is not taken. While there is no bone in the penis, the delicate erectile tissues can be damaged leading to permanent erection and urination problems. These may include the failure to achieve an erection and painful curvature of the penis resulting in a “failure to perform”. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases and urine infections also rises at this time of the year. On the other hand, some people forget

to maintain good levels of hydration by drinking sufficient water in the warmer weather. This can lead to the formation of kidney stones which can be one of the most painful conditions known. It is not only alcohol which may lead to problems. Certain soft drinks particularly cola drinks contain substances which are found in kidney stones and increase the chance of stone formation. Furthermore some of the energy and sport drinks contain substances which increase the likelihood of stone formation. Energy drinks which contain large amounts of caffeine can result in causing the person to make more urine more quickly and cause urgency of urination where the person has to hurry to the toilet. Sometimes this results in the bladder not being able to hold on and leakage occurring. Also caffeine can cause more urine to be made than the fluid being consumed and as a result the body becomes dehydrated. This also leads to an increase chance of kidney stones. To all the readers: have a happy and healthy Festive Season.

Visa

Entitlement Verification Online

(VEVO)

Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) is a free, online service provided by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection that allows visa holders and registered Australian organisations, Australian employers, labour suppliers,

education

providers,

financial

institutions and government agencies) to check the details and entitlements of a visa holder.

All employers planning to employ visa holders should be registered with VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) to check the visa details to ensure the holder has work rights for Australia. As most visas are now electronic and do not require a label in passports employers should regularly check the visa status and conditions using VEVO to ensure that your employees have work rights. Both visa holders and registered Australian organisations can use VEVO. Registered Australian organisations use VEVO (only with the consent of the visa holder) to check the entitlements of a person’s current visa. The most common users of the system are Registered Migration Agents who monitor and check visa details as part of their authorised Registered Migration Agents services, and employers and labour supply companies, who confirm a visa holder’s entitlement to work in Australia. Other VEVO users include, education providers who check the study

entitlements of visa holders, and other organisations that have a need to confirm visa conditions or check whether a person is in Australia permanently or temporarily. Organisations can register for different VEVO categories, including: work entitlements, study entitlements, licensing eligibility, residence status, immigration status, medicare eligibility, and migration agent. VEVO means there is no need to have a visa label in a passport. The system enables visa holders and registered Australian organisations to confirm an individual’s current visa details and entitlements at any time. Registered Migration Agents (RMAs) and Australian organisations use VEVO to check the visa status or entitlements of visa holders applying for visas, work, study, licenses and access to Government services such as Medicare. Once registered a VEVO account will never expire. VEVO is free and is available 24 hours a day seven days a week. For further information please contact a registered migration agent.

Building a new

energy efficient home can save on running costs

The cost of running and maintaining your home is always increasing. Building a new home will give you the opportunity to incorporate some simple features that can reduce those costs and make living in your home more comfortable in our tropical climate.

You can spend thousands of dollars using the best products on the market or you can be little smarter and use some simple ideas that won’t blow the budget and will make your home more energy efficient. Quite often a little extra spent in the construction period will save you money further down the track. Using the best design for your block of land is still the most important factor. Issues such as; orientation on the land; where the cool breezes will come from in summer; where the sun is located in summer and winter; exposure to elements during extreme conditions; cross breezes for natural ventilation; suitable materials for tropical climate and many more factors will make a lot of difference on the level of comfortable living in your home. We tend to live an outdoor lifestyle so having suitable external living areas that face the best direction should be of high importance. Air conditioning is something that we are becoming more accustomed to in the tropics. If

we design the home efficiently then we can reduce the amount of time we need to run them, and when we do we should be running them at the recommended temperature of 25 degrees. Roof and ceiling insulation, reflective colours, tinted glass, good shade, solar power, gas cooking and hot water, efficient lighting and power options, suitable power tariffs, a higher roof and good sized overhangs are all elements of your design that will reduce your home’s running costs. Many of these ideas can be achieved by a few slight changes to the initial sketch plan for only a small cost. My advice to clients is to maximise your value for money, so maybe spend a few extra dollars on some energy saving features now rather than having to spend more on the running cost of your new home in the future. You will need to do some of this research yourself so that when you are talking to your builder/designer you can determine whether or not they are experienced in energy efficiency

We recently completed the Lake Street City Alive laying over 3,500m2 of stone including Porphyry Cobbles, Rectangle and Crazy Pave and 2,500m2 of Brickpave to the car parking bays. Also recently completed was the redevelopment of the new Cruise Tender Terminal and Car Park at the Yorkeys Knob Boating Club where we were appointed the Principal Contractor. This project involved paving, establishment of small retaining walls, landscaping,

installation of traffic bollards and light bollards and asphalt car parking. Other commercial projects include the retaining walls in Vistas North Estate in Redlynch, Oceans Edge at Palm Cove, and the Cairns AFL precinct. We paved the roadways throughout Argentea and The Links Golf Course in Port Douglas and have been involved in Site/ Project Management laying in excess of 120,000m2 of pavers throughout Cairns Airport. BUG OFF!

As the level of humidity builds, our tropical climate becomes a haven for pests like termites. A termite colony needs moisture to prosper and any damp timber is a food temptation too great to resist creating a nightmare for homeowners and builders. If your home or building has timber structures that are underground or in the dark near soil, you’re at risk of termite infestations. Damp timber waste buried around homes, decks and buildings is a food haven that usually leads to rapid consumption by these voracious pests and often leads to the attack of surrounding building structures by progression.

All types of termites need moisture. Although moisture control is difficult in our tropical region, there are some preventative measures you can take against these pesky invaders in your home/building: • Ventilate – Make sure all vents are clear for airflow, preventing accumulated moisture build up. • Leaks – Tend to all plumbing leaks as they arise.

Tropical Termite Troubles

• Drains, Gutters & Down Spouts – Check these to make sure all water is redirected away from the home/building, and not pooling near the structure. • Gardening – Avoid having gardens directly against the wall. • Sprinklers – Never soak the soil near your home/deck/building. • Storage – Never store timber, firewood, or even cardboard and newspapers, on the ground. • Barriers – If they can’t get to it, they can’t chew through it. Mesh systems are extremely effective, especially when moist environments can’t be avoided.

By Stacy Wong The best defence is prevention and making sure your structure is designed to be termite resistant from the start. Consult local termite experts, and get a regular inspection to locate termites and to prevent costly damage.

Smithfield Dental

Smithfield Dental has been a part of the community in Smithfield for 23 years with both Trish and Lea at the helm. In recent years Meglin and Quinton joined us and together as a team we specialise in whole patient care. We would also like to welcome Olivia Evans who will be joining our team in the new year. We have treated many four-generation families – caring for all ages and needs. We value our long-term relationships with our patients, and we believe in keeping our education and skills current so we can offer a whole of life, up to date care package for our patients. It is important to keep it real! The Importance of Childrens Dental Care Healthy primary teeth allow for normal development of the jawbones and muscles, save space for the permanent teeth and guide them into place. The mouth is also the entrance of the gastro intestinal tract, so it is imperative for good health. When good oral health habits are established at a young age it becomes a habit for life. A great approach for the first visit is to come in as a family to familiarise your child with the dental setting. This can be done from 1 to 2 years of age.

W

orkplace parties, giving and receiving presents and the traditional Christmas banquet, are the focus of the weeks ahead. For Australia’s animal refuges and rescue organisations there is a very different motivation at this time of year. As the holiday season approaches the number of unwanted animals increases and their resources are strained to accommodate the influx of discarded dogs and puppies. The dynamics of where all of these dogs come from is varied but the outcome for many of them is the same. Holidays are planned and families prepare to embark on the annual pilgrimage to their place of origin. Accommodating their canine companion develops into a monumental problem as boarding facilities are stretched to overflowing and in-home care services have their client base established. Sadly some owners choose to abandon their dog over this period rather than having to reschedule their festive celebrations. The financial burden of Christmas can be very stressful and the obligation to provide for our families can often be very

105

overwhelming. In some cases the priority of providing gifts and indulging in colossal gatherings takes precedence over the continued care of the family pet. The lives of their animals seem insignificant, something easily discarded and replaced. With good intentions puppies are presented as gifts in homes throughout our community. Excited children and adoring adults swooning over the endearing new family member. PostChristmas surrender or abandonment of these animals is another major contributor to the insurmountable number of unwanted pets. Always consider the care and commitment your beloved dog has earned, they ask for so little and give so much. I have worked in these industries and have witnessed first-hand the flood of unwanted animals at this time of year. There are genuine reasons for having to relinquish ownership of your pet, but in many cases the reasoning is inexcusable. Contribute where you can to all of the wonderful organisations that care for the discarded dogs and puppies in our community. Make Christmas special for all creatures great and small.

For most people, when a relationship breaks down, it is the single most intensely distressing period of their adult life, a time when everything that was stable in life is thrown into chaos.

breaking up is hard to do and as a family

Separating parties commonly experience a mixture of grief, anger or guilt sometimes all at once. All of these factors are each difficult enough to deal with, but what often follows is a change of address, a separation of finances and changes to parenting arrangements. The immediate questions of going or staying, affording rent, finding a home, how long will it take to resolved and a myriad of other questions swirl around the mind.

I understand how stressful it is for the most rational of us to deal what is an extraordinary situation in our lives. Separation is not unique, but it is to the separated person. Adding disputed child arrangements to the mix intensifies the emotional roller coaster.

GOODSTART EARLY LEARNING TRINITY BEACH Writing & Photography by Stacy Wong

Since 2005, Goodstart Early Learning Trinity Beach (Goodstart Trinity Beach) has been dedicated to the development of children aged 6 weeks to 6 years.

The centre offers a Queensland Government Approved Kindergarten Program– with a University qualified kindergarten teacher, and play-based learning programs in conjunction with the Early Years Learning Framework. Situated on the main road in Trinity Beach, the centre is conveniently located close to local schools, businesses and residences – making it easily accessible for families in the area.

“We pride ourselves on providing the highest Quality Education and Care. There are no gimmicks, no freebies to get families in the door. Our Families come to Goodstart Trinity Beach because they believe in the importance of giving their child the very best possible start in life. Being a NOT for PROFIT service, you can be assured you are investing in your child’s future, not someone’s back pocket.”

“More than 80% of a child’s brain development takes place within the first five years of a child’s life. Children are able to develop independence, as well as discover, explore and learn skills for school and life,” says Vicki Tier, Centre Director.

“Goodstart Trinity Beach is working towards creating natural physical spaces which invite open-ended interactions, spontaneity, risk-taking, exploration, and foster an appreciation of the natural environment.”

“Children will develop skills to help succeed in all stages of their lives. Goodstart educators have all either attained or are working towards formal qualifications in Early Childhood Education, as well as possessing a real love of children. We pride ourselves in having a strong commitment to ongoing education and engaging both children, families and the wider community to developing a child’s skills and knowledge.”

“The children enjoy a wide variety of activities within a flexible daily routine to ensure that every part of their day is not just fun, but acts as a teachable moment in time.”

Why Chose Goodstart Trinity Beach? • We’re for Children, NOT for Profit • We are a long day-care plus early learning • Local connections, and national network • High Quality Resources • Successful learning outcomes • We are a Sunsafe centre • Extra Curricular Activities

children had a visit to a local School in Preparation for School in 2015. At Goodstart, we like to work with the local schools to ease the transition process for children commencing formal schooling. This helps establish and support the children’s sense of belonging and place within the community.” As a Reef Guardian Centre, the centre is committed to educating children on how to care for their environment by implementing and promoting sustainability practices. What do educators find most rewarding about working in early childhood education? “It is most rewarding for Educators being a part of a child’s first 5 years of life, and being involved in the child’s journey of becoming a knowledgeable and skilful individual.”

Community Involvement Educators work with families and the local community, to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment. Children are provided with opportunities to be involved in a play based learning environment, which allows each individual child to develop skills for life. “Families are involved in special events, and we encourage participation, input and feedback into programs. Goodstart Trinity Beach has strong links with the local community. Recently, our Kindergarten

From twisting spanners to twisting a biro… My Name is Chris Reid…. And I’m a pilot.

I’ve always wanted to say that!

But I’m not a pilot, I’m a Motor Mechanic and a born and bred Cairnsite. A local lad who began his apprenticeship as a pimple faced school leaver with a keen interest in cars. Becoming a Motor Mechanic wasn’t about finding a job or making money. To me it was about learning about something I liked, something I had an interest in. Above that it was about helping others maintain and repair their motor vehicles. To some, cars are just cars. They use them as a tool to transport their families to school or sports. Distinctively styled, the Peugeot 4008 adopts many of the design cues from the Peugeot 508 saloon, and the stylish 208 hatch including the feline-inspired fascia and floating grille. The front of the car is characterised by the floating grille, expressive headlamps and LED daylights which together with the generous ground clearance give the vehicle a distinctive elegant visual expression. The illusion of greater height is created by the front end design, giving the car an authentic ‘tough’ look which will please onlookers as much in the bush as when parked outside the best café in town. Elegant and sleek, the cat’s claw-inspired tail lamps, the body sill protectors and flared wheel arches give the vehicle personality and a dynamic all-road attitude.

The

represents a stunning addition to the Peugeot range which will set new benchmarks in the highly competitive SUV market.

The adventurous character of the 4008 is complemented by its interior which gives it a touch of class and elegance with beautiful finishing such as chromed components and ‘piano black’ lacquered surfaces. Other details like the perforated-leather steering wheel with audio, cruise control and Bluetooth controls ensure comfort, distinctive style and safety. The 4008 offers both driver and passengers comfort worthy of the finest saloons, including numerous storage compartments, an air conditioned glove box and two 12-volt outlets along with ergonomic seats. FNQ

Left in the Dust – The last race on the MakoTrac leaves FNQ Motorsports Club without a facility for bitumen races.

O

n a sunny Sunday afternoon in November, FNQ Motorsports Club had its 7th and final race of the year at the MakoTrac facility in Mareeba. Usually the bitumen races are held in high-spirits, but this one had an undertone of melancholy. Sadly, this was the last bitumen race for FNQMC members until they can find a new venue to race. “Over the years the MakoTrac has shown its wear and has been broken up. It will still be used as a kart track, but bitumen races for the club have ended. We’re looking for somewhere to go, but our members won’t have anywhere to race after this,” says Andrew Horn, President of FNQ Motorsports Club. Without the use of the MakoTrac, FNQMC members will be forced to hang up the rubber until they can find another facility. “If we can just have one kilometre of roadway, we can keep our members going.” “We have the Springmount Racing Circuit to look forward to, but that’s in the long run. We need something for the short term until that facility is ready, and that won’t be until at least another year or even two.” “I was quite taken back by how sad members were. It’s taken something away from them that’s such a special part of their lives.” “Most of us grew up with grass roots motorsports. It’s what we love, but we need a race track to be able to do it.” “We’re not just business people and workers doing our day jobs. We work to play; this is our other passion. This is a huge part of us, and having that taken away is a great loss.” “Some of our members compete in multi-million dollar events and championships worldwide.”

We have trained and nationally accredited officials and track inspectors. The club doesn’t discriminate or segregate; it’s not overly competitive and we just like to get together and share our

passion for racing. “We need more communication and proactive support from council in the future. We need to be working together to find somewhere to race for the short term. With 150 competition members, we’re at least 800 strong with friends and family support – we might be a small segment of the community but growing every year.” “Gavin King and a collection of representatives from the local Motorsport Clubs and enthusiasts, formed a working committee, and the decision was made that all finances and resources would be put into the Springmount track. But we need government and Council support to complete a multi-purpose motorsport complex.” “The FNQ Rally Sport Park in Mareeba (home of the Club’s dirt racing) will become one of the premier rally and sprint tracks of its type in Queensland. In a growing city like Cairns, there needs to be something like this. It’s a thriving regional centre. With Council assistance supporting local clubs like us, members will not have to leave town to find what they need in motorsports.” “The club is hopeful that the visit from Terry James, Deputy Mayor of Cairns, and two councilors on our final race day will have a positive outcome. We have had some positive discussions with them. We are looking forward to a bright future with the help of the Council and community.”
