Cover Story

Kevin Byrne

Kevin Byrne on life, family and economics by stacy wong Walking into the Shangri-La hotel, former Mayor of Cairns, Kevin Byrne is immediately greeted by a familiar acquaintance. He graciously shakes hands, exchanging a few friendly words. It’s not often that KB returns to Cairns, and I had the privilege to share some of his time as we sit down for coffee. We chat to find out what he’s been up to since leaving the spotlight of public office, and his thoughts of Cairns and its economy. What brings you to Cairns? KB: Since June I have been on an extended break from Papua New Guinea (PNG) to spend time with my wife Amanda and daughter Isabel before she left for the States. I’ll be going back to PNG in September to commence another appointment. KB recently returned from Sydney, where he and wife Amanda sent their daughter, Isabel, overseas for a one-year school exchange program in America. Was your daughter excited to move to America? How have you coped with her leaving the nest? KB: She’s very excited. It’s a 10month scholarship program offered to her through Trinity Anglican School. It is a scholarship through a wonderful US program called ASSIST. There were four Australian year 11 students selected to do the corresponding year in the USA system. It’s been a joy seeing her grow up and being successful in what she’s doing. It’s a great privilege for parents to be a part of your child’s success. Do you have any worries about your daughter being overseas? KB: As a father I’ll always have concerns. We know she’s with a good family; we know she’s at a wonderful school; and we know that

they will take care of her as if she’s one of their own. But as a father, and having your daughter half a world away, I will always wonder what she’s doing and I will pray that she is safe. What have you been doing since leaving public office? KB: I’ve been busy. I have spent the last four and a half years living in PNG and Cairns. I work a fly in/out roster in PNG for up to six to eight weeks at a time, and then I come back to Cairns for a couple of weeks to recharge the batteries. Then I’m back up again. Kevin has spent these years working in several contracts in the development of the oil and gas space in PNG. More recently, he worked on the development of the 1st PNG LNG energy project. Why work in PNG? KB: There’s a lot happening in PNG in that energy space and particularly the development of gas opportunities. PNG is ideally placed in terms of geographic location to those energy thirsty markets of Northern Asia. I recently served for a brief six-month stint as Group General Manager of Hides Gas Development Company, one of the larger landowner companies in PNG associated with the PNG LNG project. Prior to that I worked with InterOil and Bechtel. What do you miss about Cairns? KB: I miss the convenience of Cairns. It has most things that would appeal to wide groups of people. It mostly has good weather, it’s conveniently located to Asia and the Pacific, it has an international airport, and it is safe. Cairns is a very convenient city in which to live, and that is its attraction to me.

9

What are your favourite places in Cairns? KB: The Esplanade and Lagoon, the Botanical Gardens and the whole waterfront precinct. I also love Palm Cove. It is a beautiful jewel in the crown of Cairns. I also think Green Island is superb, and has probably got one of the most underrated and best resorts in Australia. We often take the beauty here for granted. One of the good things about being away so consistently, and coming back as often as I do, is that I’m reminded of the positive sides of what Cairns is all about. It’s a relief to walk off the plane here. “As soon as I walk out of that plane, I just get that sense that I’m at home. It’s nice to be home.” What do you enjoy doing in Cairns? KB: It’s at the nicest time of the year to be here just now. I enjoy wandering around and taking it in, and I just love being in my home. I also enjoy the time with friends and mates. I’ve got some very special friends in Cairns that I always enjoy spending time with, and I always seek them out. They’re positive people. I like being around positive people. One of my strengths is the fact that I’m very loyal to people that have shared their loyalty with me. It’s nice. “I’ve spent the time reconnecting with Cairns, and the people here.” What did you enjoy about being the mayor? KB: What I loved about being the Mayor of Cairns was the creativity of the job. It was what you made of it. I loved the leadership role that came with the turf, and the daily challenges. “I’m very proud of the 11 years I had as Mayor. It was a great privilege, and I respect the privilege that I was given by the people of Cairns to lead this community.”

CairnsLife

KB: There are lots of things I’m proud about with the city. But that doesn’t come overnight. You have to have a vision and a plan. You have to articulate that vision and plan with a narrative to deliver. Where people in Australia become cynical is when you say you’re going to do something, and it’s not done. “This is a great city and I am proud to have been part of its transition to an internationally recognised city.” What don’t you miss about being the mayor? KB: I don’t miss the constant exposure, the lack of privacy, and the impacts on family. It was constant and unrelenting. People don’t recognize that the person in public life also has a right to a private life. Across Australia, there’s a universal lack of regard for that fundamental right people should have. We’re very quick to criticise and we find it easier to tear down than build. “I think that Australians would be a much more empathetic society if we criticised less, and acted more positively.” What do you think of the economic state of Cairns? KB: It is no secret that Cairns has existed in the doldrums in recent years. Cairns never really recovered from the impact of the global economic crisis and the high Australian dollar that accompanied it. This affected the tourism industry and continues to do so. It is slowly recovering now, but there’s still a long way to go and the dollar is still stubbornly high. Cairns is a wonderful destination, but it’s a mono-economy destination; if tourism’s not doing well then Cairns is not doing well. It’s as simple as that. “We need to find the key to unlock a greater potential for Cairns; we need to

Kevin Byrne continued from previous page

aggregators. The last thing we need here is entities investing in our city infrastructure that are fronts for Chinese Government entities and money laundering exercises. It is quite incredible that a communist socialist economy has produced so many individual millionaires and billionaires in a few short decades.

take advantage of its geography, and we need to take advantage of the creativity of a lot of the people who live here.” A waiter clumsily sets down our coffees; two long blacks spilling over the brim. KB’s request for the coffee not to be too full is lost on deaf ears. Poor service obviously riles him and is clearly another factor in Cairns’ economic struggle. KB: Look, it’s like pulling teeth. We have to understand that we are part of the service economy. The service industry is quick to tell everybody that they are good at what they do, but by and large they are not. People are happy to pay for good service, but they aren’t willing to pay for poor service or inconsiderate service. “We need to rediscover the ethic that people want value for their money. This is a community that relies on a service ethic.” KB: Cairns loves patting itself on the back but we also need a reality check. We need to rediscover our professionalism and our zing. People should love doing what they do. There’s a mentality going around that doing what you get paid for is more of a chore these days. This is a competitive world. What is your outlook for Cairns? KB: I’m always hopeful because that’s the optimist in me. The realist in me also says that we’re still struggling. “We appear to have put all our eggs in the basket of foreign Chinese investment.” KB: Whilst we can absorb this investment, and as a community we are good at accepting of it, we still need to be careful. It appears to be an “Aquis or bust” mentality here. Whilst it appears to be a huge project, I personally don’t believe that it’s going to occur on the scale that has been promoted. Nor do I believe it will occur in the timeframe promoted. I hope I am proven wrong. The numbers that we’re talking about are mindboggling, and to me the logic is not stacking up when I do the sums.

What are your thoughts on current political leadership? “One of the things that continues to disappoint me is the dearth of leadership across all levels regardless of your political view.” KB: It is quite disheartening to be

KB: Wiser heads than mine in the community are already asking questions about whether this is in fact achievable in the timeframe, or are we being duped? I am noting a word of caution here. As a community we need to have a plan B and a plan C. But I don’t see a plan B or a plan C. I just see plan A. What are your thoughts on foreign investment in Cairns? KB: We’ve been particularly fortunate with foreign investment. Much of the Cairns infrastructure has been built on the back of foreign investment. It’s also true to say that there’s been a lot of local Australian investment in our tourism infrastructure, and we should never lose sight of that. “This is a community that should go from strength-to-strength on the back of investment in all its forms, but we need to be cautious.” KB: There are always concerns with vertical integration of foreign investment, and we need to ensure that this is not part of the investment downside. That’s something that Cairns needs to be careful about. Additionally, there is already evidence that there is land and asset banking going on with the hope that Cairns is about to take off. We need proper developers here, not speculators and

10

They just want people that they can believe in and trust to get on with it. It is pretty simple. They are just not there for now; it’s a great shame, and people will be paying the penalty. What do you think is needed for Cairns to recover from economic lulls? KB: It’s critical that businesses, the State and Local Government take responsibility for getting involved in the recovery space. For example, the Council, the Chamber of Commerce, Advance Cairns, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, the State Members of Parliament, the Cairns Port Authority, and the Cairn’s Airport, need to really coordinate their activities, make some decisions, put some rubber on the road, and not duplicate and waste resources, which is going on now. There is too much of that, and some are just mouthing platitudes. I see some really well-meaning people here, but this is not the time for “ego play.” There’s far too many groups operating and treading water. Just look at how Townsville operates if you want a lesson in cohesion. “We need decisive and strong leadership in driving Cairns along this road of opportunity that may present itself.” KB’s love of this city is evident, as he still remains hopeful for its future and further growth. He’s proud to call Cairns home, a place where he and his family are most comfortable. “I love coming home. I’m very comfortable in my home, which I share with a wonderful wife, and until recently with my daughter, but she will be back in ten months.” The recent adjustment to an empty nest hasn’t been easy for KB and wife Amanda. KB looks forward to a family reunion when they visit Isabel over the Christmas holidays.

frank. In this day of the instantaneous communication cycle, we need a believable and cogent narrative, be it for a local, state or a national audience. Too often there’s failure in that space, and there is confusion and justifiable anger. We can’t afford that. Look at the national issues surrounding our budget. People have just about stopped listening. They are sick of the blame game.

CairnsLife

KB: It’s been a week of adjustment, serious adjustment. We will go over in their mid-year break (December to January) to visit her. We’ll also be visiting other family acquaintances that Amanda knew from when she spent 12 months on a rotary exchange program when she was 18. They’ve remained close and kept in contact through the years. It will be a time of reunion for Amanda and for ourselves with Isabel.

The

Wizard is Back – on the Yellow Brick Road!!

With so much success in finance Scott Burness has decided to team up with Mark Bouris again and Yellow Brick Road.

SCOTT BURNESS IS BACK IN TOWN! You may remember him from Wizard Home Loans when he brought Australia’s lowest home loan rate to Cairns, the “Rate Breaker”. He sold the business in 2009 and decided to travel the world with his family. “I had clear goals when I started Wizard in 2000, make money to allow maximum time with family, reduce the cost of living for locals by offering great interest rates and always strive for excellent customer service”. “Our travels took us from Tuscan villas to the Caribbean, cycling in Otago to walking the vibrant green hills of Ireland, swimming with dolphins in Cuba to driving the civil rights trail in the US”. “Five years of memories to last a lifetime, the best part, knowing my son Flynn spent his earliest years in a front row seat, the world on stage each day. He started school this year and my hope

is he can draw from these experiences whilst encountering academia for the first time”. This year brings two beginnings, the start of school and my latest adventure, Yellow Brick Road – what a great name – Yellow Brick Road is a wealth management company with the goal to give all Australians access to quality financial advice. Our mission is to assist people in planning for their future from the purchase of their first home fight through to their retirement. We do this by providing expert advice, products and services in the areas of home loans, financial planning, superannuation, insurance and savings. Every Australian needs quality financial advice that they can trust and they need a partner who is going to be there with them, to look out for them over the long term. At Yellow Brick Road, that is our commitment to all hard working Australians and their families. It’s personal to us because it’s personal to you. That’s why when you walk into our branch we will often ask you questions about various aspects of your financial situation. We look at every clients “big picture” because it’s part of our DNA to ensure that you have the best possible opportunity to achieve the financial future that you dream of. Buying

off the Plan

SIX positives to buying off the plan & realising your financial dreams

Lock in a price – One of the advantages of buying off the plan is that you will pay the current market price for a property, even though it will be completed in the future. Securing a high value asset for a low initial capital outlay – While a deposit is made to secure the property (usually 10%), the entire payment doesn’t need to be paid until the property has been built. This provides you with time to organise your finances and if required sell your existing home without the need for bridging finance. Increase in property value – If the market experiences growth, the property you purchase off the plan today may increase in value when you settle two years later.

Tax advantages – If purchasing for investment purposes, you may be able to claim depreciation on your tax for items like fixtures and fittings. It is important to consult your Accountant to find out if you are eligible. Stamp duty savings in some states – State governments (in certain states) offer bonuses and reductions in stamp duty for buying off the plan which can save you thousands of dollars. Seven year builders guarantee – Newly built properties in Australia come with a 7 year builders guarantee which means structural or interior building faults must be repaired by the builder.

dispelling the myths of building on

ELEVATED LAND

Take the forested, sloping setting of Elysian as your prime example. Many people are attracted to Elysian for its tropical ‘feel’, serenity and proximity to the beach but then face the conundrum of how they will design their home to suit. This is where Tony Zambelli, Director of Coastal Pacific Homes steps in. Tony is one of the region’s most experienced builders whose specialty is exactly that, designing and building dream homes on elevated land.

They are clients who enjoy privacy and a hillslope block is perfect for this.”

“Many people feel that a hillslope block is just too difficult but it is all in the design. It is all about producing home designs that float seamlessly over the top of the existing land to create minimal earthworks.”

Tony’s advice is golden. “Let the land dictate the design of the home. All hillslope blocks have different features and benefits that you can utilise or make the most of in the design phase. Capturing the right aspect of the elevated views and incorporating features into the home that capture the most desired eye line view are all parts of the process. For instance, designing the home to have larger windows or double glass sliding doors that beckon the outside in. Another practice is making sure the breezeways channel the best airflow and to do this we might incorporate louvred sections of windows.”

According to Tony the greatest benefits of elevation are cooling breezes and panoramic views.

Tony also dispels the assumption that an elevated build comes at an elevated price.

“We find that our clients who want to build on elevated land look for home designs that offer lots of open space and do not feel too ‘up close and personal’ with their neighbours.

“So many people just disregard this style of build because they assume their budget will be eaten up with the expense of earthworks. However, it can be quiet easy.

The best way, in my opinion, is to start with a lightweight steel frame construction. You need to design the home so that it fits with the land. In other words, don’t try and mould the land to a specific design because changing the land is costly. Some people make this mistake; the come to me with a home design and then face the challenge of making it fit – that is where clients can succumb to large earthworks costs. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle, if you embrace the style of the land and let it set the design of the home, they will marry together with ease.”

With careful advice and a home designed to suit the flow of the land, an elevated home site could be just the ticket to securing that idyllic lifestyle. Space, privacy, views and cooling breezes are wonderful advantages that await the elevated LAST B home owner – all that SELLI LOCK N G FAS is required is a little bit of patience and a OVER lot of expertise. 7

Paul Stirling Ray White Cairns Beaches

By Michelle Dryburgh

Ray White Cairns Beaches has been ranked the number one office in North Queensland for the Ray White Group. The office consistently rates among the top 30 Ray White offices in the state and is commonly accepted as the leading Auction company in the region.

P

rincipal and Auctioneer Paul Stirling and his team of sales personnel, property managers and support staff are behind this success. Some of the highlights of Paul’s career to date include securing the highest ever price for a beachfront property at Trinity Beach and providing project management and sale of multi land subdivisions and apartment complexes. He has also received some of the industry’s highest accolades, titles like Ray White Auctioneer of Excellence, Olympic Council Auctioneer and REIQ (Cairns) Hall of Fame for Auctioneering to name just a few. But for Paul, there’s much more to Real Estate than winning awards. “Personally, I am very rewarded by the successes of our team and I feel commensurately proud of the careers the sales-people have built. Yet this longevity is not limited to the sales team. Many of the property managers and office administrators have had long careers and I am pleased we can offer a pathway of growth for many.” All this and more has been achieved in just 10 years since Ray White Cairns Beaches commenced business as a standalone office in its current location at Trinity Beach. From humble beginnings as a branch of Ray White Northern Beaches, the business has grown to occupy a large modern premises and boasts a growing team. Combined with Ray White Smithfield, in partnership with long-term rental manager Joseph Indorato, the business has more than 30 personnel and manages in excess of 750 properties. “I have an unshakable belief about the fixation the sales-personnel have to achieve the absolute maximum best result for sellers of property in both dollar value and terms,” Paul says. “As a team we present choices to owners on whether to market their property and how to market their property. We also have some of the very best Auction practitioners in the country.” The experience of the Ray White Cairns Beaches sales team ranges from 2 years to 12. Paul himself will celebrate 25 years in the Real Estate industry, and with Ray White, in March next year. “My role has evolved over the years from one of primarily a sales-person to multi-tasking in the marketing and selling of property, the training of personnel, management duties and of course – Auctioneering,” he says. “Together we demonstrate a long history and vast array of experience.” With plans for further expansion, the future for Ray White Cairns Beaches and Smithfield offices, their personnel and clients looks bright. “We have an AQUIS strategy under development and when combined with the training and development processes in place we are looking ahead to continued growth of the business and the people within,” says Paul. “We are always on the lookout for terrific people to join us and excited about the opportunities that lay ahead for the Cairns marketplace.”

Take your business back to the future

Future computers

What started as a photocopier repair agent almost 20 years ago is now one of Far North Queensland’s leading IT services. By Michelle Dryburgh A leader in data storage and recovery, network security, maintenance, support and sales solutions, Future Computers is a shining example of the evolution of technology and business in the 21st Century. As one of the first in the local market to embrace cloud technology, Future Computers offers clients a greater knowledge base and more experience than most competitors. This commitment to staying ahead of the rest has always been a central focus for owner and director, Andrew Bischof, who attributes quality of service to his business’ success. “We have built a solid reputation around the services we provide and the technologies to match,” he says. “The mix of technologies we support and implement helps us to relate to almost all small to medium businesses. We are able to provide solutions based on years of experience across most vertical markets from trade services and professional services to local councils and education.” Future was originally established by the Future Group in 1996 as a photocopier company based in Maroochydore, before extending up the Queensland coast and arriving in Cairns. In January 2003, Andrew and his then business partner purchased Future Computers, making the business 100% locally owned and operated. In January this year, Andrew took sole ownership of the company. “We have gone from being just a warranty repair agent for Toshiba copiers and laptops to now providing business services and warranty repairs for Lenovo, IBM, Telstra and Microsoft,” Andrew says. “We have hired skilled staff to ensure we can meet the demands of our business clients and service the market in Cairns and surrounding areas. Expanding into new technologies and services has accelerated our growth in an otherwise stagnant market and has provided us with a very positive outlook moving forward.” Andrew says his team has the perfect mix of youth and experience to provide the latest and best IT solutions for any business, offering on premise, cloud and hybrid options. “I spend a lot of time with clients understanding the needs and pain points and as a small business owner can empathise with struggles they might face both technically and in their business in general,” Andrew says. “We like to match technologies with need to ensure our clients can operate without hindrance from their IT systems and instead of seeing IT as another business expense, see it as an asset and an integral part of the day to day operations of their company.”

Business Mapping Solutions

By Michelle Dryburgh

A business plan is a common starting point for many business ventures.

I

t may provide a sense of guidance, reassurance, or help to secure start up finance. But it doesn’t provide all the answers. That’s where Business Mapping Solutions steps in, helping businesses move beyond that initial business plan. “Most business plans become doorstops or dust collectors,” says founder Margot Richardson. “Frequently they are created for someone else, like a bank or consultant telling them they need one.” Margot began offering business coaching and mentoring programs in Cairns 14 years ago. Since then Business Mapping Solutions has evolved from being a small business consultancy to a Certified Practising Accounting Public Practice. “We have the same standards and qualifications as other accounting firms - we just do different things,” explains Margot. That includes helping new businesses define a clear path and purpose, assisting existing businesses to get back on track. They also provide governance and financial management support for not for profit organisations. “And we do that through mentoring, coaching and bizmapping - an interactive process for business planning,” says Margot. The variety of services offered by Business Mapping Solutions has allowed the Cairns-based business to extend its reach to remote and regional areas. It also means Margot and her team work with a wide range of businesses and not for profit groups and the people behind them. But what really sets this business apart, is the individual attention and care they give to each client. “We genuinely care about our clients and work to help them help themselves,” says Margot. “This can lead to a long relationship - or a short one. Once they have what they need they move on, and we love seeing that. They often come back later and it’s a great opportunity to revisit business goals, and set new ones.” That relationship is only possible with the support of dedicated staff – which Margot says is her greatest resource. Among them is Laura, Margot’s daughter, a fellow CPA and inspiring young leader. “This view is supported by anyone who knows her and watches her operate. She has very strong skills in financial management and general business,” says Margot. Then there is Gail, the admin driver, organised and supporting the team in their day to day operations. “She connects so well with all our clients and they feel welcome whenever they visit or interact with us. We always know what we are doing when Gail is around.” And the newest team member is Lyn. “She offers great attention to detail and good clarity. This is so important with reassuring people in business.” “We are also looking for another team member – someone with good accounting skills but wanting to do something other than traditional accounting. We have a bit of that but so much more.”

Law Solutions By Michelle Dryburgh

What started as a sole operator legal practice in Cairns four years ago is now one of the fastest growing law firms in Cairns’ legal history.

L

aw Solutions, formerly Property Law Solutions, has recently expanded its service offerings to include wills, estates, employment law, and disputes. With this has come a growing team, from just one to almost 20 staff members. “Our business is very fortunate to have benefitted from a combination of incredibly supportive clients; loyal referrers and hard work from our staff. All this is helping us get to where we want to be and deliver results for our clients,” says Ranjit Singh, owner and lawyer. “In recent times, one of the unique spaces we have carved a niche for ourselves is acting for Asian corporations and investors.” Ranjit regularly travels throughout Asia and has built an extensive client network in the region. Two of the major projects Law Solutions has been involved with this year alone are the acquisition of a CBD site for an $800 million dollar development for a Singaporean listed public company and acting for the purchasers of the Paradise Palms Resort Development. “We have a proven record in helping to deliver large scale marquee projects to fruition and as a result we are highly regarded by Local and State governments,” says Ranjit. The global reach of the business means business is not limited to 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. “Some of our people start at 7am while others finish at 9pm or late,” Ranjit says. “We are around and available whenever deals are happening. I’ve lost track of the number of early mornings, late nights and weekends our team has worked in the last four years.” Ranjit says it’s this accessibility and attitude that has helped the firm to grow and its clients to benefit. “We have a massive focus on getting things done.” “Our office comprises of individuals who are dedicated to being the best they can be. Our aim collectively is to be Cairns’ number one law firm in terms of skill, expertise, and commercial acumen. I’m of the firm view, and have been for some time, that Cairns is on the cusp of a fantastic recovery which will mean a great reward for the all the hard times that Cairns locals have endured.”

With such a broad range of services on offer, the Law Solutions team is able to assist any and all business with a wide range of legal needs. For an obligation free discussion on your legal matter contact the team’s new enquiries hotline on 0432 640 969 or 4051 4430 or visit www.lslaw.com.au

Local Tourism Network By Michelle Dryburgh

It’s easy to get lost in the barrage of tour booking websites and super saver deals.

E

specially when you live in Far North Queensland. And if you’re doing business in the tourism industry, you’ll want to reach the biggest possible audience in the best possible way. Local Tourism Network offers exactly that, combining the best features of tourism booking sites, directories, destination marketing and deals sites. It has the largest network of public tourism websites in North Queensland, with around 800,000 users researching holidays in the region each year. And it’s not a commission based service. “Local Tourism Network uses cutting edge internet technology to drive customers direct to any business involved in the tourism industry,” says sales manager Rebecca Kelly. “Our members have access to the latest tools and trends available to generate direct business on the web.” One of the most popular features of the Local Tourism Network is the Local Tourism Deals feature. When businesses sign up with Local Tourism Network, they can include promotions for locals’ rates in the weekly newsletter, which is sent to more than 4000 locals and growing. There are now 34 Local Tourism Network website destinations across Australia. “There is no other local site doing what we are doing,” says Rebecca. “We are focussed on using new technology to give tourism operators direct business. It’s easy to navigate for both consumer and operator alike and we have such a great presence within the online community.” The user backend of Local Tourism Network systems is also easily navigated and offers an informative statistics page, offering even greater value for money and allowing businesses to monitor web traffic. The Local Tourism Network is a small but productive team, led by brother-sister duo Jodi Nelson and Kim Marsden, who also own reputable booking site Travstar. “We have an upbeat and fun office environment,” says Rebecca. “Actually, I often feel like I’m at a friend’s house for coffee, except there’s work to be done. But this sort of free and creative environment is one I can easily thrive in, it’s important to me to be able to discuss the product and ideas with the owners of the company freely and work together to continually make it better.” Born and raised in Cairns, Rebecca has been involved in the tourism industry for many years, starting with waitressing in her teens and later sales with an iconic adventure company before studying acting and pursuing a successful Film & TV production career in Brisbane. “After moving back to Cairns some 10 years ago I found myself once again enticed into the wonderful world of tourism in Cairns.” Rebecca also worked in event management and TTNQ and currently represents online media collateral management company, Narnoo. “I enjoy building good business relationships and ultimately enhancing the working lives of those in the tourism industry. Franca Forde Staffing Solution

By Michelle Dryburgh

Finding the right staff is crucial to the success of any business.

R

egardless of industry, you need reliable, hard-working people you can trust. With 50 years’ experience across the hospitality and recruitment industries, Franca Forde knows exactly what employers are looking for. As the founding director of Staffing Solution, she specialises in finding the right people for the right jobs and helps businesses adopt a more efficient, targeted approach to recruitment. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Staffing Solution offers access to a substantial database of quality applicants ready to fill any vacancy. With the process of credential and reference checks already complete, this means positions can often be filled without the need for advertising or recruitment campaigns. As specialists in the field, Staffing Solution understandably sets the bar high for their own staff, engaging only the most highly skilled, professional consultants to ensure the best possible service for clients. With offices in Cairns, Port Douglas, Townsville and Brisbane, Staffing Solution supports recruitment for all industries across a wide area. It’s been a busy year for the company, embracing a rebranding from Staffing Solutions North Queensland to better reflect the company’s growing reach. Franca and her team have recruited hospitality staff for major events across the region including the Castrol Townsville 500, Rabbitohs v Knights NRL match, the Cairns Cup, and this month’s Cairns Amateurs Carnival. The Cairns headquarters has also recently moved to a new location at 35 Grafton Street and is well placed to respond to the jobs growth anticipated to accompany the city’s major proposed developments. Franca says it’s the beginning of one of the most exciting eras in the history of Cairns. “There will be a lot of new jobs opening and we are all very excited about what that means for business, and for the city,” she says. “I don’t think anyone really knows yet exactly what is just around the corner for Cairns, but I am very excited to find out.” Staffing Solution has undergone several name changes since Franca established the business in 1989. It was one of only three employment agencies in Cairns at the time. Since then, the industry has seen many rivals come and go, but she believes her team’s commitment to good old-fashioned customer service has been the key to survival in a modern business world. “You have to give great customer service and be honest, that’s it, there is no secret,” she says. It’s a proven quality Franca also adopted in her ‘former life’, managing 36 hotels right across Australia in the space of 26 years, alongside her husband Brian. It was this work that ultimately brought them and their young family to Cairns, which for Franca, will now always be home.

MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design

What a great chance with Father’s Day upon us to offer a fantastic Well deserved Make-Over for a Hard Working, fantastic Father of 3. We wanted to put the spring back into Mark’s step and strip back the years. We achieved this with a sharp tailored classic cut, with just a whiff of Funk. We did not want to darken Mark’s Hair Colour as this would have felt heavy, Instead we brightened with a simple 1 minute tone. We lost the beard and kept a tidier Goatee and Moustache for a much more youthful fresh look.

Male Man scaping

To give those final touches to Mark’s makeover we tidied up the eyebrows and evened out the colour, we also evenly toned Mark’s skin as he suffers from slight Rosacea, this softened and enhanced Mark’s overall look.

C ON TRIBUTORS

Parent Migration With Father’s Day approaching and the recent closure of some parent visa classes we thought it’s a good time to look at the parent migration options. If you are an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, who is settled in Australia, and has a parent living overseas wishing to migrate here then the contributory parent visa categories are available.

On 2 June 2014 the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) closed the Parent, Aged Parent, Remaining Relative, Aged Dependent Relative and Carer visa categories. As such the remaining visa to sponsor parents to Australia is through the Contributory Parent visa program. All applicants for the contributory parent visas must meet health and character requirements as well as a balance of family (BoF) test. This BoF test requires parents to have either: at least half of their children permanently resident in Australia or more children permanently resident in Australia than in any other single country overseas. The contributory parent visa classes are subject to a substantially high second visa application charge which contributes towards the applicant’s future health and welfare costs. A mandatory Assurance of Support (AoS) bond is payable for the contributory parent classes. The AoS is a legal commitment by a person to repay to the Australian Government certain welfare payments paid to migrants during their respective AoS period. An AoS is also a commitment to provide financial support to the person

applying to migrate, so that they will not have to rely on social welfare payments. The AoS period is 10 years for the contributory parent visa classes. Parents whose age is equivalent to a person who is eligible for an Australian age pension, in most cases, are able to make an application for an aged contributory parent class while here in Australia and remain in Australia during the visa processing. Otherwise applicants need to apply for the offshore categories. The contributory parent visa is split into temporary and permanent visas. A parent can either apply directly for permanent residency or they can chose to apply for a temporary visa, and then within two years apply for the corresponding permanent visa. The advantage of doing this is that the substantial second visa application charge is spread across two visa applications and potentially a two year period. If you are intending to migrate to Australia you should the assistance of a Registered Migration Agent who can give advice and guidance on the right visa option for you.

Want an Australian Visa? At Visa Connection we provide expert and personalised immigration advice to individuals and corporations worldwide. We have a vast knowledge of: • Australian Migration Law • General Migration Advice • Family sponsored visas • Spouse and Defacto visas • General Skilled Migration • Australian Citizenship and • Work sponsored visas (457 and RSMS/ENS)

That’s what Australian jazz drummer Simon Barker experienced while listening to Bae Il Dong perform traditional p’ansori on a waterfall at Chiri Mountain in Korea. P’ansori is described as epic Korean story singing usually centring on extended morality tales. Simon described the first time he heard Bae Il Dong as one of the most powerful memories of his life ahead of their collaboration for The Return of Spring showcase at the Tanks Arts Centre in September.

fRIDAy 26 SEPTEMBER For the past few years a creative exchange has been taking place between Korean and Australian musicians, and on this occasion Sydney drummer Simon Barker and improvisational master Scott Tinkler, will combine with Korean p’ansori singer, Bae Il Dong and the Australian Art Orchestra, for an event like no other. P’ansori is a genre of Korean traditional music; a vocal and percussional music style of which Dong is a master.

“When I heard him on Chiri Mountain I couldn’t control myself emotionally,” Simon says. “I burst into tears and it was the first time I lost the ability to hold myself together, which was caused purely from the sound he was delivering. This still happens to me when we are playing concerts now, he will sing a certain note in a certain way, with the idea being to unleash these emotions in the listener and it works over and over again.” Bae Il Dong is one of the greatest p’ansori singers on the planet. The tradition usually sees aspiring performers spending long periods in isolation where they sing into waterfalls to ‘break’ the voice and reveal its true tone. Bae Il Dong spent seven years living on Chiri Mountain on the southern end of the Sobaek Mountain Range, practicing up to 18 hours a day in order to unearth his voices. “What separates Bae Il Dong is I think he really understood what the purpose of this tradition was and he had a very clear practice focus during

his time (in isolation),” Simon explains. “A lot of people do the same thing, but it’s more a type of ritual for them and they wouldn’t practice with any sort of mindfulness about what they’re trying to achieve. He went into it with a very clear set of goals and over the years has developed this extraordinary vocal instrument. So he is unusual in the sense that he had the will, but also the mindfulness to know what to do with that form of traditional practice.” Audiences have the opportunity to experience this first hand when he performs at the The Return Of Spring, a part of the acclaimed Jazz Up North series, which sees Bae Il Dong and Barker join composer Scott Tinkler and The Australian Art Orchestra. Both Simon and Scott are recognised as two of Australia’s most important musicians receiving Australia Council for the Arts Creative Fellowships. Their previous projects Daorum and Chiri also fused East and West musical styles and pushed the boundaries of what’s possible. For the upcoming Tanks performance, Simon says audiences can expect a truly memorable experience. “It’s a really fantastic piece,” he says. “It’s going to be a fun, high energy piece of music and there is lots of group interaction between members of the band so it will be a really fun experience.” The Return Of Spring, featuring Bae Il Dong & The Australian Art Orchestra is performing at Tanks Arts Centre as part of the Jazz Up North series on Friday 26th September. P RO S TAT E C A N C E R Before we look for a cancer and make a diagnosis we need to know that doing so is going to benefit the patient. By benefit we mean that having this information and carrying out treatment is going to help the man live better and longer. Some prostate cancers are what we call a low grade type and if present in small amounts do not warrant aggressive treatment. For example, if an 85 year old man has a small amount of non aggressive cancer then carrying out major surgery or radiotherapy or chemotherapy is not necessarily going to improve his length of life or quality of life. In younger men however, it may be beneficial and the need to investigate the possibility of prostate cancer is based on family history, a rise in the blood test called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and taking a sample of the prostate called a biopsy. It must be noted that not all rises in PSA level are because of cancer and that the PSA is not a perfect test for prostate cancer detection. Currently the most usual way of taking samples from the prostate for examination by the pathologist in order to detect cancer (biopsy) is carried out by a procedure called Trans Rectal Ultrasound (TRUS). An ultrasound instrument is placed into the patient’s back passage so that the prostate which sits directly in front of that can be seen on a video screen. It is then possible to direct the biopsy needle into the abnormal areas to collect the samples. Most patients report that the biopsy needle

which works in a fraction of a second on a spring loaded “gun” is not painful but more of an “irritation” and feels like they have been “flicked by a rubber band”. The uncomfortable part of the procedure which does not require a full anaesthetic or admission to hospital is the ultrasound probe because it have to be moved up and down, back and forth and side to side in order to localise the biopsy area. The procedure usually takes less than 10 minutes and there are very few side effects. The pathology result is usually available within 3 days. We have been carrying out prostate biopsies at Cairns Urology since 1997 so that patients have not needed to travel to Brisbane for this procedure. This saves a lot of time and money, the patient knows the doctor doing the procedure and a further advantage is that the diagnosis can be made locally and arrangements made for appropriate treatment as a result.

DISH of the MONTH

Borzi’s Dish of the Month: Osso Buco with Caramelized Cauliflower Mash & Toffee Carrots

Leaving the winter months, we warm up to spring with this hearty and comforting dish created by our local Masterchef

Stephen Borzi.

Osso Buco (Braised Veal Shanks)

Toffee Carrots

4 (1kg) veal shanks (osso buco) 2 tablespoons plain flour 2 tablespoons olive oil 20-30g butter 2 medium brown onions, chopped 2-3 garlic cloves, crushed/chopped 2 medium carrots, thickly sliced 2 sticks celery, thickly sliced 1 cup of sliced fennel 400g can Italian crushed tomatoes 1 cup white wine 1 cup (250ml) beef stock 2 tablespoons tomato paste Herbs (bay leaf, basil & rosemary) to taste Salt & pepper

12 Dutch carrots (small) 215g (1 cup) caster sugar 60ml (1/4 cup) water Stir water and sugar in a saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Don’t bring it to the boil until all the sugar is dissolved. Increase heat to high. Bring to boil. Whilst mixture is coming to boil, clean carrots, then blanch in boiling water or in microwave, take out & cool. Cook until the toffee is a rich golden colour - don’t let it burn. Remove from heat - the residual heat continues to colour toffee. Stand for 30 seconds for bubbles to subside slightly. Working quickly, dip 1 carrot into toffee, tilting pan to coat & drain excess toffee. Let carrot cool a little then lay on baking paper. Repeat with remaining carrots and let them set.

Place veal and flour in a bowl or plastic bag; season with a little salt & pepper, toss to coat.

Gremolata

In a good sized casserole or roasting dish, heat oil & butter over medium-high heat. Sauté the osso buco for 3-4 minutes on each side to seal the meat, then add the vegetables. Continue cooking the osso buco, turning frequently until it is nice & coloured.

1 garlic clove, crushed 1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 lemons rind finely grated Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Sprinkle over your finished dish.

Add the white wine & cook until the wine has reduced. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, herbs, salt, pepper & stock. Bring up to a simmer. Remove from stove & place in a 180 degree oven, uncovered for about an hour & half or until the centres of the bone have melted away & the meat is falling from the bone. (Note: if it gets a little dry put the lid on or add a little more water or stock.) Then serve on the cauliflower mash, add 3 toffee carrots & sprinkle with the gremolata.

Caramelised Cauliflower Mash 1 small head white cauliflower, trimmed, cut into small florets 1 brown onion, sliced 1 tablespoon olive oil 20-30g butter, softened 1/4 cup finely-grated parmesan cheese In a large saucepan sauté onion in olive oil until it starts to colour, add cauliflower and cook until they’re caramelised. Add enough hot water to cover cauliflower & cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until cauliflower is very tender. Drain excess water (if any) and return to saucepan. Add butter and parmesan, then blitz with stick blender until smooth & creamy. Season with salt & cracked black pepper.

The farm-to-table movement has made its way to the Cairns dining scene with The Paddock. Farm-to-table means sourcing directly from the farm, and moving away from feedlots and mass-produced food. The concept is simple: the closer to nature, the purer the taste. Mass production has resulted in a saturation of genetically modified foods that are pumped with growth hormones, and cheap grain feed. The Paddock believes in sustainable farming practices, ethically and naturally produced meat. Even the boards on which the food is served, is sustainably sourced from naturally fallen trees from the Daintree. “We saw a gap in the Cairns dining scene between fine dining and good food. The gap which encompasses the best quality food that fine dining restaurants would serve, but in a casual setting,” says general manager and owner Ronald Lord. “The Paddock, as the name suggests, is about the farmer’s table experience.” “We only source our meat from award-winning grass fed producers. We’re really excited to showcase Australia’s best meat.” The beef is sourced from Cape Grim, in the rich pastures of the far northwest corner of Tasmania. The “Saltgrass” lamb has a distinctly unique flavour. Sourced from Tasmania’s Flinders Island, where salt-water particles are scattered across pastures by the fresh ocean winds known as the ‘roaring forties’, giving the meat higher traces of iodine and in turn providing lamb with a richer, sweeter taste profile. “In Tasmania, the laws regarding antibiotic feed supplements and growth hormones state that it is illegal to use such ways of producing meat. So you get a very pure product, without sacrificing quality.” “Grass fed meat has many health benefits, but most importantly, it just tastes better.” “When you have ideal natural conditions, and the grass fed meat is given longer to mature, it acquires better natural marbling of the meat. The type of fat in grass fed meat is far better for the human body. In Cape Grim beef, there’s more omega-3’s than farmed salmon. “

“We’re the only restaurant in Cairns that is an MSA licenced user of MSA graded beef and lamb. So our commitment to the finest quality meats is showcased by this accreditation.” “This meat is the very best in the country. And Cairns is starting to recognize that.” With experience in hotel and hospitality, running Tropical Gardens Motel, Ron and Emilie Saunders, creative director, are committed to customer service. Holding the highest standards in service, they both currently undertake all front of house duties. “We understand people and service.” “We are hinged on the people. People coming in and enjoying our food, then going and telling their friends about us, that’s what matters. “ “People are at the core, and basically it comes down to giving people what they want.” “The Paddock is a place where you can get familiar with the faces that serve you, knowing the food you eat is always going to be of the best quality.” Ron and Emilie take charge in the dining room, educating their guests about The Paddock’s menu and the sourcing of meats and produce. “It’s an interactive two-way street about our dining style. We’re happy to teach people about the food they eat.” “People appreciate being informed about their food. Dinners really enjoy hearing about where their food’s coming from, and we have a big emphasis on traceability.” Head Chef Helen Thomson has gained vast culinary knowledge, with over 15 years of experience in the kitchen. She’s worked in various restaurants, from international hotels to cafés. Previously working in Rockhampton as Head Chef of the Leichardt Hotel and the Berserker Tavern, Helen was employed as Head Chef by Tropical Gardens Motel in Cairns in December 2013. Upon seeing the vacant restaurant, Head Chef Helen posed the question, “why we don’t open the restaurant?” And thus The Paddock was born. “The idea developed to where we are today. It has been fantastic to be able to write a menu that uses top quality meats and produce.” Head Chef Helen Thomson’s clean cuisine reminds us of the close bond people used to, and should, share with the food we put into our bodies. It’s about reconnecting those primal relationships with the farmers, the fishermen, the foragers, and the food they produce. The Paddock brings us back to the way that food was meant to be. It’s the food that people were raised on, generations before us. “We want to give a dining experience to remember clean uncomplicated seasonal dishes.”

The kitchen is where her heart is: Not only does Head Chef Helen have a love of cooking, she is proud to have two of her three sons working at her side in the kitchen. Her eldest son, Daniel Taylor, is her Sous Chef, and her youngest Alex is her kitchen hand. What are favourite dishes? Head Chef Helen: “That’s like asking me to pick my favourite child, but I like the sharing platter as you can sample different items of food. The 300g Scotch fillet is just beautiful; the natural marbling in the cut of meat is perfect.” Emilie: “The game farmed spatchcock served with Israeli cous cous, harrissa and minted yoghurt.” Ron: “200g Cape Grim Eye Fillet with roasted bone marrow, truffled kipfler potatoes, buttered spinach and red wine jus.”

Industry One Coffee A L I SLOTEMA KER AND STEP HEN LEE

Many of us don’t think about such things while enjoying our morning or afternoon chino, yet we do love savouring the aroma and flavour of great coffee. Ali Slotmaker and Stephen Lee share an extraordinary fascination for the coffee bean as owners of Industry One Coffee – a multi-faceted enterprise that has won the hearts of Cairns coffee lovers. Since opening its doors in 2010, Bungalow-based Industry One Coffee has become a prized goto espresso bar - a hub for those who appreciate coffee with a point of difference, roasted in house from true specialty and ethically sourced Arabica beans from around the world. Customers have the option of not only calling in to enjoy a freshly roasted cuppa, but also the opportunity to purchase some of their favourite coffee beans to enjoy at home. Barista training courses are also part of Industry One Coffee’s continued success, rounding out a business plan carefully orchestrated by Ali and Stephen. This success story is expanding with the opening of Industry One’s new roastery and espresso bar in Tingira Street, Portsmith. “Bungalow’s Scott Street premises is really busy with a loyal clientele coming in to enjoy our freshly roasted coffee with a light snack or homemade sweet treat, yet the roasting aspect of the business has remained somewhat low profile here,” says Ali.

Coffee, like fine wine, has an individual appeal that embraces character, quality and finesse with reverence for its place of origin and history.

“The Portsmith premises allows customers a better view of the roasting facility at the back of the espresso bar, which integrates this side of the business seamlessly.” “This new space has a bright fresh new look and feel for Industry One Coffee espresso bars with the dual space providing an ideal environment for roasting coffee. “The lines between customer and employee have been blurred intentionally to allow customers to gradually be drawn in to the roasting process.” Ali, who was a recent semi-finalist in the 2014 New Zealand Baristas Championships, adds that the Portsmith premises will also offer more flexibility for Industry One Coffee’s popular Barista School. “We will now be able to offer daytime courses in addition to our current evening classes,” replies Ali. “Today career opportunities for Baristas include world travel and achieving celebrity judge status for elite artisans. Our Barista courses are aimed at providing a high standard of tuition and developing talent as an integral component of Industry One Coffee.” Another facet of Industry One Coffee’s business profile is the Coffee By The Box online wholesale sales initiative servicing cafes and businesses. “Coffee By the Box is our newly launched wholesale brand, which offers specialty coffee beans at a great price for cafes and businesses,” says Ali. “Industry One Coffee was born out of a desire to see the Cairns and Far North Queensland coffee

culture grow and develop alongside Australian capital cities such as Melbourne and Wellington, New Zealand.” “To achieve this Cairns needed its own specialty coffee roaster - a roaster focused on the art of hand-crafted small batch coffee roasting, while developing new and emerging roasting trends.” “The coffee culture in Cairns has come a long way in the four years Industry One Coffee has been operating. It’s great that there are now several specialty coffee roasters in Cairns.” “It’s all about connection, knowing your roaster, buying locally and getting that unique experience.” “Industry One Coffee’s creation of a dynamic interface to allow people to get up close and personal with the roasting process and the wholecoffee experience is an integral part of this experience.” “We look forward to continuing this concept at both the Bungalow and Portsmith premises.”

Synergy

Resource Management Synergy Resource Management Pty Limited (Synergy) offers a comprehensive range of civil and environmental contracting services. Synergy’s team leads the field with extensive experience in the civil engineering, environmental and mining industries.

Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Reardon oversees the entire network of Synergy’s national operations and is also responsible for the company’s corporate communications, strategic direction and project support. Andrew is passionate about establishing and maintaining strong client relationships and industry partnerships. With over 25 years’ experience in the mineral exploration, mining, remediation and civil construction industries in Australia and internationally, Andrew has developed a broad knowledge base. Andrew was raised on a remote rural property with his early education conducted via school of the air. After completing boarding school and university, Andrew worked in the metalliferous mining industry for most his twenties. Afterwards Andrew shifted his attention to the civil and remediation sector and after establishing Synergy has since created a market leading and reputable enterprise. Andrew’s experience is integral to Synergy’s success. He is instrumental in winning and managing major projects and leads the development of new technologies. Andrew understands the commercial and technical aspects of a variety of contracting services, from business development through to undertaking a range of site works. “I place particular emphasis on achieving good environmental, safety and quality outcomes through effective supplier acquisition, planning and thorough project management. I encourage the Synergy team to use a transparent approach while engaging with our clients. I have always found

communicating in an open and positive manner with all stakeholders essential in creating the environment required to ensure successful outcomes.” Synergy has undertaken various projects throughout Queensland. Recently these involved the demolition and remediation of petroleum sites at a number of locations including the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Maryborough, Rockhampton and Charleville. “Given Queensland’s geographical size, challenges exist both in planning and in executing works to ensure they are undertaken in an efficient manner. Synergy’s personnel are required to travel considerable distances and sometimes temporarily relocate to ensure our clients are provided the dedicated service for which we are renowned. In my experience, you need to get the fundamentals right from the start. A successful transition from the planning to the execution phase is largely dependent upon how well we interface with government and local communities before, during and after all our projects.” Andrew’s goal is to continue to grow Synergy, particularly in Far North Queensland. Synergy currently services the Queensland and Northern Territory regions from their Gold Coast office, and are in the process of exploring suitable locations in Cairns to base their Northern Australian field operations from. This will lead to the creation of local employment opportunities and direct and indirect benefits to local suppliers.

Old School

Engineering Expert Engineer Jo Marino isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. By Stacy Wong

All the work I specialise in

is done “Old School;” there are no computers involved in the engineering work. It is all done by hand.”

Born and bred in Cairns, Jo is a local through and through. After completing Secondary school at St Augustine’s College, he then apprenticed at CSR Hambledon Mill Edmonton as a Fitter & Turner. When the Mill shut down, he progressed to Mulgrave Central Mill as a Diesel Loco Fitter, then Dawson’s as a FIFO on a few shut-downs, and then onto Skyrail as a maintenance fitter. “After 30 years specialising in my trade and gaining plenty of experience behind me, an opportunity arose to launch an engineering business, thus I took advantage of this opportunity, and now own and run Old School Engineering (OSE).” OSE specialises in small light engineering, welding, brazing, custom parts, sheared bolt and extraction repair, restorations, bits and bobs, and odd jobs. No job is too small. OSE is also the Cairns dealer for Ural motorcycles, parts and accessories. Having been taught by a Russian machinist, who oversaw his apprenticeship. Jo honed his skills to custom make a lot of parts without the use of high-tech machinery.

Getting machinery running and engineering parts was also invaluable knowledge picked up at Mulgrave Central Mill. “In the time that I was there, I learnt a lot of skills off an older tradesman.” Jo uses his refined skills to for fixing mechanical issues, and custom making parts and accessories for motorcycles. His specialty is making parts that cannot be purchased through the web. With Jo’s passion for motorbikes, he’s built OSE as a place for motorcycle enthusiasts. “When you first step foot into OSE, it’s as if you have stepped back in time into an old sugar shed, rusty corrugated iron, busted concrete floor, Retro green lights and red oxide paint. There is a small collection of relics on display with more to come. Some days, customers come in just for a chat to share their motorcycle stories.” Wanting to take his wife for a non-traditional motorcycle ride, Jo took an interest in Ural sidecars. “I wanted us to enjoy the scenery together in 1940s Grace Kelly style. The Urals are full of personality and character, a retro looking bike with modern technology. The bikes are very tough, still built in Russia but under an American licence. They come with a two-year unlimited warranty, and I am one of the dozen dealers in Australia.” Jo’s passion for restoring motorbikes started as a hobby. “I like working on motorbikes as they are not heavy, unlike what I’ve been used to over the last 30 years. I was doing up the 1984 BMW, which should have been left where it was found. People

commented saying I was crazy to be working with a pile of junk, and it would never get going. Today it stands on display, fully functional in the show room. Many people walk past it not knowing it is 30 years old.” What does Jo love about riding? “Not the traffic! When riding a motorcycle anywhere, you get to experience what is going on around you at the time of riding through it: the elements, smells, and feel of the road.” Favourite place to ride? “I will ride almost anywhere, preferably in dry weather. I like the Adventure Bike Riding scene. Packing all your gear and food on a bike, and heading off the beaten track. It’s a good challenge and very satisfying. I also like the Tablelands, further a field when time permits. Road and dirt, it’s all fun!” Favourite bike? “I don’t have a favourite bike, it depends where I want to go; horses for courses. As I tell my friends, ‘it’s all nuts and bolts to me.’” OSE’s White Retro Ural is available for prop hire for photos for formal arrivals and weddings. Contact Jo for enquiries. Future Dental Dr. Bob Gibbins

By Stacy Wong

In the rapidly changing world of dentistry, Dr. Bob Gibbins and his team at Future Dental have always had a leading edge.

Future Dental particularly caters to family dentistry from birth to old age, and covers the full spectrum of cosmetic dentistry. “We have a simple philosophy in our examinations. Instead of offering every conceivable choice, we only offer what we would have done ourselves,” says Dr. Gibbins. Graduating from the University of Queensland in 1972, Dr. Bob Gibbins opened Future Dental in 1976, the same time that Cosmetic Dentistry first started with the advent of bonding. “I love my work and have no retirement plans,” says Dr. Gibbins. All dentists require a minimum level of Continuing Professional Development, but Dr. Gibbins proactively seeks training and research to remain a master in the field of dentistry. “I have always maintained a far higher level of training, including frequently training and international research.” “The biggest advance in cosmetic dentistry is what can be done by cosmetic and therapeutic injectables.” In various countries around the world, dentists have been doing these procedures for decades. It is only in the last few years that the hurdles obstructing Australian dentists from performing these procedures have been removed. “Of all the health practitioners who have been doing cosmetic injectables in Australia for a long time, there is not another who has both the training in the anatomy of the face as well as comprehensive oral health training.” “The Australasian Academy of Dento Facial Aesthetics, AADFA, is well recognised as being amongst the world’s best sources of training.” “There is only so much we can do with teeth and gums within the mouth to create a great smile. The lips and the face are the frame to that smile.” The old methods of filling teeth with mercury amalgam are a common problem that Dr. Gibbins sees.

71

“It is out-dated and causes many fractures in teeth over a number of years. Future Dental has been replacing these for decades and we do more crowns because of the damage done by amalgams than any other reason.” Dr. Gibbins warns strongly against the advent of Asian dental tourism. “Many people think they get value going to Asia, where much is promised but the quality usually falls short. Australian dentists are tightly regulated and materials and techniques used must fall within strict guidelines approved by the TGA.” “Often it costs more repairing the damage, often irreversible, than it would have to get it done properly in Australia in the first place. These dentists know you will not return for more incompetent treatment to rectify the problems and that it is too difficult seeking legal compensation.” Dr. Gibbins’ advice for achieving and maintaining a perfect smile: Floss. “When people ask me, ‘Which teeth should I floss?’ I tell them, ‘Only the ones you want to keep.’” “There is no substitute for good oral hygiene in maintaining a healthy attractive smile.” “Regular trips to see your dental hygienist and examinations are important.”

Busy builders and rising prices I’ve written a few times recently about the rising price of available land in the Cairns area for residential construction. I am going to say again that it is at its lowest price now and we will not see these low prices again. We have seen some land in subdivisions around Cairns, especially on the north side, increase as much as $40,000 plus from the last release to the current release for the same size and type of block. This is going to happen more so as the market reacts to announcements like the Aquis development, the Aquarium and other developments. The influx of construction workers and permanent staff for these projects will impact greatly and put more pressure on the availability of good housing over the coming years. Much of this affordable land will be on the south side of Cairns. There are a number of factors as to why the land prices are increasing; from initial purchase cost of land, infrastructure charges, to market affordability allowing developers to increase margins. Put simply its supply and demand in a rising market. This is reflected

in the very low vacancy rates in housing rentals and is now moving to low vacancy rates for units. With this ‘rising market’ supplier’s prices are also increasing. If you are looking at building your new home set your budget and make sure the land doesn’t eat into it to the extent of not having enough to build a suitable home for your block. All this is having a dramatic effect on pricing for House and Land packages. We will see the result of this over the next year or so as new land comes on line and the current land stocks are sold. So what I am saying is be prepared for increases across the board in the Cairns region and for building times to lengthen as it will become difficult to get more tradespeople and supply of materials for the residential market. Builders who have been around for a long time will have a good base of long standing tradespeople. We currently have well priced House and Land Packages in most areas with our land

C R UISE The stunning 208 oozes of French simplicity and is beautiful on the eye. It is a compact, light, spacious and aerodynamic vehicle that is small on the outside yet, through very clever design techniques, feels much larger on the inside. It has a sleek silhouette which is agile and uncomplicated with Peugeots new design signatures showcased throughout.

The Peugeot 208. With a history dating back to the 1920’s, the latest edition to the ‘20’ range is a stylish and modern addition to the Peugeot family and is a definite must to consider if you are looking for a sophisticated and innovative small car.

An ergonomic re-generation has taken place with its occupants in mind with the instruments and controls having been completely re-thought. The interior architecture is based around a small steering wheel with a reduced diameter and a lowered position where drivers actually look over the steering wheel to the raised instrument panel, providing all the information in high resolution at the drivers’ direct field of vision. This simple design change has a huge benefit in a reduction in the amount of time a driver’s eyes have to be off the road. This makes the 208 not only practical, safe and fun to drive but at the same time, gives the cabin a high quality, uncluttered feel. The 208 also features a large 7” entertainment touch screen to

further reinforce the strong and intuitive link between the car and its driver. It is positioned in an ideal hand field location and provides intuitive access to radio, Bluetooth, USB music files or audio streaming. Coupled with this is the complete peace of mind that comes with its unparalleled safety. The 208 was the first car in its segment to be awarded the maximum 5-star rating since Euro NCAP adopted tough new criteria in 2012. It boasts a comprehensive list of standard safety features including 6 air bags, Stability Control, Traction Control, ABS, EBA and EBFD. With a comprehensive list of standard features across the range, Peugeot’s 3 year 100,000klm warranty, 3 years roadside assist and 5 years Assured Capped Price Service Plan and priced from only $21,990 drive away for a 1.6lt automatic, the Peugeot 208 is well worth considering. Allaro Homes Homes built on a strong family foundation.

By Stacy Wong Allaro Homes has an upstanding reputation when it comes to building quality custom-built homes. Over 30 years, Wayne and Jenny Cavallaro have established themselves as premier homebuilders in North Queensland. Wayne and Jenny know what goes into the foundations of building a good home, and beneath that, family is the foundation on which Allaro Homes is built. Wayne and Jenny have been married 34 years. Despite the challenges of raising a family while running their own business, they managed to find balance between work and family. “Having 4 boys under the age of 6 was a handful, but I loved it. Being a mother came first. The business got more of my time when the boys needed less,” says Jenny. Innately following in their footsteps, three of their four sons have now taken to the family business. “I knew when they were young they were good with their hands and loved building things. The boys learnt to use a hammer early on, then I spent the rest of my life looking for my tools as the boys made cubby houses, boats and such,” says Wayne. Daniel, a carpenter, has been working for the family business since his grade 10 school-based apprenticeship. Daniel is also soon to be appointed supervisor and manager for the Townsville operation. Josiah is in his 8th year as a subcontractor carpenter for the company. Troy is in his 7th year in the family business. Over the years, Troy accumulated many roles from estimating, designing, drawing, business management, sales and implementing the latest technologies How did you get into the family business? Daniel: I always loved working with timber, so it was a natural thing to do to follow in my dad’s footsteps. Josiah: I loved building cubby houses in the back yard. I couldn’t wait to leave school and start my apprenticeship building real things. Troy: I had moved away and come home for a visit. I got stranded here for 3 weeks due to a cyclone, and spent time talking about the vision for the future of the business. I saw how I could implement the technologies I had learnt away and

96

help the business. What influenced you to follow in your parents’ footsteps? Daniel: I loved the fact that they built peoples homes that they were proud of, and would be standing for a long time. Josiah: I wanted to be a part of things and build homes that people loved. Troy: I wanted to help to make the family business better. What’s it like working with your parents? Troy: Easy going. We are on the same page. They give me freedom and trust and back me up on decisions made. And working with your siblings? Daniel: Most of the time it’s good. Josiah: They have my back. Troy: It can be challenging at times, but it helps being the big brother. What is your favourite part about working together? Daniel: Keeps us close. Josiah: Always learning something and being together. Troy: Sharing dreams, highlights and success. Jenny: I love having them close. It makes me so proud to see them grow and step up to the challenges, and share the moments along the way. Wayne: Being involved in their lives everyday. Josh Cavallaro Stepping away from the pack, Josh Cavallaro chose his own path. Josh runs his own company, called Markets and You, teaching people how to trade on the stock market. He is also works for binary. com an Introducing Broker. “He’s very entrepreneurial and had to pursue his own dreams,” says Jenny. “Josh needed to follow his own aspirations, but he’s still very close with us,” says Wayne. www.marketsandyou.com

Willmot Smash Repairs By Stacy Wong Growing up in the male-dominated industry of auto repairs, Helena Willmot never dreamed she would follow in her father’s footsteps. “The industry wasn’t very attractive for me as a young girl – it was noisy, dusty and full of grubby blokes,” says Helena laughing. “I would always spend time at the shed when I was younger but it never appealed to me that I would be running it for dad one day.” Her father, Allan Willmot, started the business in 1977, growing it into one of Cairns’ leading Autobody Repair facilities. For 37 years, Allan and his team have been dedicated to quality work and customer satisfaction every day. Since leaving school in 1998, not knowing what career path she wanted, Helena was in and out of the business, picking up skills in administration and accounting. In 2009, she decided to come back to the family business to help her father. “He was getting tired and I knew he needed a hand. From here, I worked very close with him and learned so much more about the industry and his endless tasks that run in the background. He is now semiretired,” says Helena. “Although Helena had spent some time working in the business over the years I never thought she would come back and work in the business let alone take on the leader ship,” says Allan. What do you admire most about each other? Helena – Allan is a hard working and hasn’t been afraid to take risks. He has dedicated most if his life into this place, and has continually put his thoughts into improving the shop in way of equipment, technology and design. I admire his integrity in all decisions he makes and his passion in environmental sustainability he has implemented into the shop. Allan – Helena drives a tight ship and makes me feel secure in the fact that it is in capable hands and she will continue to take the business to

97

the next level and the next level etc. What’s it like working in the family business? Helena – Great fun. All staff feels like they are family, especially when they are long term. It creates a happy environment and a close-knit dynamic team.” What’s your favourite thing about working together? Helena – Working as a team with him to face business and industry challenges together. I love learning more about the industry and general business from him. I enjoy setting goals and business projects together for the growth of the shop. Right now he is getting the Paint Prep Bay ready for our new Fast Track booth to increase our production efficiency for faster turnaround times. He has put a lot of time and thought into the design and planning so I’m looking forward to the project finished.” What sets your family’s business apart from other businesses? Helena – The business has our heart and soul, and the culture we have as a family business. Together as a team, we aim for quality repairs and customer satisfaction.” What’s the future outlook of Willmot Smash Repairs? Helena – Allan will fully retire, maybe. With my current supportive staff, I will continue keeping the business up to industry demands and constantly improve our efficiencies to uphold Willmot Smash Repairs as Cairns’ leading Autobody Repair Facility.

Wedmaier Homes It might be small, but Wedmaier Homes is a building company big on quality, service and family.

By Michelle Dryburgh

Run by father and son team Bruce and Baz Wedmaier, the exclusive builder completes just six homes a year, offering clients attention to detail and truly personalised service. It’s a partnership built on trust that combines a father’s old school trade secrets and his son’s management skills with modern design practices and technology, to deliver a result like no other. “I may have been dragged kicking and screaming out of the 18th century and into the future,” jokes Bruce. “But we now have the ability to show clients computer-generated graphics of what their finished home will look like, and we can make changes to the design in front of their eyes.” Bruce started the business from his home in Edge Hill in 1997, but the story behind Wedmaier Homes began some 40 years ago. Bruce was studying drafting at university when he discovered a connection between his interest in design and construction. Realising he wanted to work, he left university and completed a carpentry apprenticeship in Brisbane. By the age of 21 he was a commercial registered builder in Yeppoon, before moving to the Sunshine Coast and continuing his career in various roles in the building industry. In 1993 he moved to Townsville and worked for other builders before the final move north to Cairns in 1996. When a building company he was working for folded, he took over an unfinished project and Wedmaier Homes was born. Since then Bruce has built more than 100 homes throughout Cairns and regional areas, earning several major industry awards. He also completed commercial projects and major reconstruction work in Innisfail after Cyclone Larry. Bruce has used the same local suppliers and sub-contractors since day one and supervised 14 apprentices in various levels of their trade. For the past four years he has been supported by his eldest son Baz, who will soon take over the company as manager, allowing Bruce more time on the ground to do what he loves most. “Baz has a background in event management and has worked for a roof truss and building company doing design work and estimating, so his skills are a great fit for the business and he is excellent at managing the business and communicating with clients,” says Bruce. “Within the next 12 months Baz will be in my seat and I can get out of the office and spend more time on site. He has made a real commitment to the business and the trust between us is absolutely fantastic, so I have full confidence to give him that responsibility.” Bruce hopes the change will give him more time for his passion of flying, scuba diving and go-kart racing with his youngest son, who is 14. He also hopes to visit his daughter and granddaughter in south-east Queensland and volunteer his time as a pilot for Angel Flights. And while he hasn’t made any plans for Father’s Day, he says doing any one of those things would make it a perfect day.
