I am really looking forward to this year with positive news all around. Big projects and small projects all are welcome as Cairns declares itself open for business. Fingers crossed for all systems go with the Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort. Both Jacqui and I are long term locals (born and bred) as we refer to ourselves and we are welcoming the injection of these projects to the region. We believe in everyone having a say, but for CairnsLife we are only interested in the positives, so a word to the naysayers, there is no space in our publication for your views.

95 January/February 2014

My Mother and Father brought up five children in Cairns and I am the only one that still lives here. All of my brothers and sisters left to find work and as a result of meeting partners have made their lives in other cities. Now with a growing family of my own I hope this pattern does not repeat itself and Cairns continues to grow to give my family the opportunity and lifestyle to remain here and start their own family. Hence without growth Cairns cannot sustain a growing population a of the next generation. Both jacqui and I wish all the businesses in Cairns a happy and successful 2014. Here’s to grow in our region.

2014 WILL BE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING YEARS IN LIVING MEMORY FOR CAIRNS.

Gavin King words by Michelle Dryburgh

The city is set to shine in the international spotlight hosting major events such as the G20 Finance Ministers Meeting, Australian Tourism Exchange and UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. Each event is expected to bring more than 2000 people to the Far North, supporting an impressive calendar of sporting and community events including the return of AFL and NRL matches and the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations and Ironman events seen in Cairns. Also on the horizon are major developments like the $4-billion Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort, and new attractions including the Cairns Aquarium and Australian Armour and Artillery Museum. With the resulting job growth and economic benefits, the Member for Cairns believes the city is well placed on the path to becoming the most liveable tropical city in the world. “I have never been as optimistic and excited about a new year as I am about 2014,” Mr King said. “In all the time I’ve been here, I have never seen this level of positivity. I think after so many years in the doldrums the people of Cairns are hungry for change and eager to see a turnaround in our economy. “There has been a lot of work behind the scenes, a lot of roundtables, a lot of problem solving and a lot of lobbying senior government members to get to this point, and now we are starting to see the green shoots of that work emerge.” Just a few years ago, Cairns had the highest unemployment rate in Australia. Now, jobs growth is among the fastest in the state, real estate prices are rebounding and building approvals are up. Tourism is also on the rise, with international and domestic tourism figures at record highs late last year. Mr King believes it’s only the beginning of the tourism revival in Far North Queensland and says now is an opportune time for businesses to prepare for growth and capitalise on increased trade and a growing population.

“Every business, every person, in our community has to step up and keep working incredibly hard to make the most of this opportunity,” he said. “We can’t rest on our laurels and expect an easy ride. “The first three months of 2014 are really ideal for every business to get prepared and set themselves up for the next few years of potential growth.” Mr King admits a growing population will bring with it some challenges, and a major focus this year will be encouraging more residential living in the CBD. He said reducing the urban sprawl and growing central residential density will create a more efficient and successful city. “All of the global studies of demographics indicate more people are wanting to live in a CBD to be closer to the action, and being able to live, work and play in the CBD has many benefits for the local economy,” he said. “I think with all of these economic factors aligning this year, the time is right for Cairns to promote and push more residential living in the CBD.” Also on the agenda for Mr King this year will be a renewed focus on the region’s traditional tourism markets of the United States, Europe, the UK and New Zealand, and investigating trade opportunities within the Asia Pacific. “No other regional city was as hard hit as Cairns over the past five years or so, and to see the city surging back the way it is, is incredibly exciting to be a part of,” Mr King said. “If the whole city – all three levels of government, business and economic groups, all work together and focus on these key areas, we will double our strengths and double our prosperity. “Times have been tough and as a city we lost our confidence, but we have such a unique opportunity to become the leaders of the pack and make Cairns the place to be in 2014 and beyond.”

On the horizon are major developments$4 billion Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort, Cairns Aquarium & Australian Armour and Artillery Museum.

2014! TO

It’s January - a crucial time to make or break those New Year’s Resolutions. We all start the year with the best intentions. Whether it’s a plan to eat healthier, drink less, exercise more, or finally finish off that back deck – you’ve probably got a goal for the year in mind.

B

ut without proper support and the right advice, it can be difficult to stay on track. So to help, the CairnsLife team has put together a list of their own goals for 2014 and found local businesses that can help make those resolutions a reality. In the following pages, you will meet the people behind these businesses and learn some practical tips on staying on track in 2014… Buying a Home When a new year rolls around, it’s common for people to be moving house, renovating or looking to escape the rental trap. For our sales and marketing manager Jessie, it’s time to start thinking about buying her first home.

We’ve found five local businesses to help Jessie, and anyone else thinking of moving, renovating or upgrading household items in 2014. Read on to hear from a new exclusive conveyancing firm, electrical store, interior designer, property valuer, home loan provider, builder and real estate agent. Me, Myself and I Ever get the feeling there’s just not enough hours in the day? We all do! Between work, family and personal commitments, there’s rarely any down time. And when we get ‘too busy’, important matters like health, nutrition, fitness and general happiness tend to get overlooked. Our sales executive Brodie doesn’t want another year of making excuses.

19

CairnsLife

She thinks everyone could do with a little more of that elusive ‘me time’, and we agree! So here’s a handful of businesses ready to help you find it. Breaking Bad Habits Not many of us would admit it, but most of us are guilty of a bad habit (or five) that we would like to change. Tracy, one of our sales executives is among the millions of people pledging a New Year’s resolution to end a bad habit. She soon discovered a wide range of businesses in and around Cairns were preparing for a busy start to the year helping others do exactly that. The Breaking Bad Habits feature showcases the stories and advice of several local specialists ranging from a hypnotherapist to a business coach, to help you make the most of 2014.

gil foster, jane wescombe & steve meers A L L A RO H O M E S By Alana Campbell

BUILD E R BUILDING A NEW HOME BEGINS LONG BEFORE THE FOUNDATION IS POURED – MANY WILL DREAM ABOUT IT FOR YEARS. SO WHY NOT INSTEAD OF SETTING NEW YEAR’S GOALS THAT WILL BE FORGOTTEN ALMOST AS QUICKLY AS THE INK DRIES ON THE PAPER, THINK BIG AND REALISE A GOAL THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME.

W

ith combined experience of more than 60 years between them, the talented design team at Allaro Homes not only have a swag of HIA and Master Builders awards to their names, they also have a portfolio of some of Cairns’ most beautiful homes. Jane Wescombe, Steve Meers and Gil Foster have a lot in common – they are incredibly creative, they like to think outside the square, they are passionate about what they do, but most importantly they love to work with people. They are also the design team behind Allaro Homes. It isn’t about the recognition for these three, it is about working with the client, bouncing ideas off them and ultimately designing a home they can be proud of and want to live in for years to come. Jane says it is about taking the clients’ ideas, using their experience and knowledge, and coming up with something truly unique. Jane, who is formally trained as an interior designer, has more than 17 years experience designing custom homes. She is a dedicated mother of four and she believes her personal life has helped her grow professionally. “Having a family really changed my focus on design. Suddenly you have all these different aspects to consider. Now I ask

the questions, is that kitchen big enough, is there enough storage, what size are the bedrooms and where are they located?” She says there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the client’s excitement build as their new home takes shape. “There are so many different ideas and information given to people looking to build. It is making sure they understand what is right for our environment and climate and getting it exactly right for them.” For Steve, this too is the most important factor when designing a new home. Eight years Steve has worked with Allaro Homes and during this time he has designed more than 300 homes. He says no matter what style of property, the most important thing is to build a rapport with the client. “The first thing to do is just have a chat. Find out more about their block of land, certain aspects that are dictating design, as well as the plan and the size of a house required. These points are all really important to provide a framework to start with.” He says this is what he loves about working at Allaro Homes. “Their philosophy is to plan every home to perfection and they provide the tools for us to be able to do this. There is no cookie cutter solution, every home is well thought out, designed and built exactly to plan.” He says helping to achieve this is the technology that sits at the very core of Allaro Homes. Not only does Allaro Homes use the best design software available, it also has a patented software system that allows it to seamlessly plan the construction. Another highlight is Allaro 3D, which is a major component of the Allaro Design Suite, which allows clients to view their home in 3D render once the design has been finalised. Other elements in the suite include the

21

CairnsLife

Allaro Pinboard, the Portfolio, and Check List, which tracks the building selections. Someone who knows the business inside out and says the use of this technology has been really inspiring for clients on the Allaro Journey, is Gil who joined the team in July last year. He brings more than 40 years experience to the table having worked with a range of different clients during his long career – experience he says is incredibly important when trying to incorporate the essence of tropical design. He says he is proud to be a part of the Allaro team, and work alongside Jane and Steve, who together have a lot of years combined knowledge. “It is important to consider the experience of the designer as your first point of contact. We are people who have lived in the tropics for our whole lives and are in touch with tropical design and tropical architecture. “We can also build economically,” he adds. “We are the builder, so when we are designing we can approach the construction methodology economically because we have the people around us who can problem solve and come up with solutions. It is important to realise it doesn’t cost more to custom build and you get exactly what you want. ” Building a home is one of the biggest investments a person will ever make, which is why it is important to engage with a builder who is trustworthy, knowledgeable and offers guidance through the building process from initial planning through to construction and finally completion. The Allaro Experience is about the way building your home should be. For more information, visit www.allarohomes. com.au or contact 07 4031 0022.

lmost 40 per cent of all mortgages written in November 2013 were for investors, highlighting the ongoing struggle for first home buyers in Queensland. The latest AFG Mortgage Index shows that while first home buyers are dropping out of the market, hitting new lows through November, investor numbers are increasing. Area Manager for Queensland Country Credit Union, David Smith, said that while the market has been ripe for investors, there was still work to do to assist first home buyers into the market. “It’s great to see the investment market thriving but there is still work to do in the first home buyer market.” Mr Smith said urgent attention needed to be given to addressing the decreasing number of first home buyers entering the market in Queensland. “We need to see a lot more support across all sectors to help people prepare and

achieve the goal of purchasing their first home. “It is vital to the ongoing success of our communities,” he said. Queensland Country Credit Union currently support potential first home buyers with a savings plan to build a savings history and budgeting tools to assist them with their deposit. “We encourage people to come in even if they aren’t yet ready to purchase because our home loan and savings experts are here to help them get ready,” he said. Mr Smith also encourages first time property investors to be cautious in over borrowing while rates are at the bottom of the rate cycle. “The last thing we want to see are people left in a difficult situation if rates start going back up again.” “It is also important they are able to cover repayments from normal income sources if their property is untenanted for any period of time”.

BUYING YOUR FIRST HOME – Quick tips So you’ve decided to move out of your parent’s home or escape the rental cycle. Before you look to buy - prepare. 1. Set yourself a budget and stick to it. Save over at least a three month period. Most financial institutions provide online savers or bonus savers to help you save faster. 2. Look at any money you owe on credit cards or personal loans. Consider consolidating some of this debt if it will save you money. Remember - any existing debt will reduce your borrowing capacity. 3. Make an appointment to find out how much you can borrow. Most lenders will offer conditional approval for you if everything stacks up. Preapproval means you really know what you can afford. 4. Find a good solicitor prior to signing a contract and consider any special conditions that may need to be added to the contract. 5. Organise a building and pest inspection and take out home insurance once the contract has been signed. 6. Go back to your financial institution to organise your loan. They will take care of the paperwork for your First Home Owners Grant. 7. Settle - Move into your new home and celebrate.

efore you can open the door to your new home, there’s a minefield of financial negotiations and legal issues to overcome. But it doesn’t have to be a burden, with a helping hand from the team at Barb Jarmey Conveyancing. The firm opens in the Bolands Centre this month, headed by Barb Jarmey, Kerrie Pearce and Anthony Mirotsos. Combined, the trio has more than 60 years’ experience in finance, real estate and both commercial and private property law. Even more importantly, they are real people, with real lives and a real passion for what they do. “We are a team focused exclusively on conveyancing and we pride ourselves on providing a comprehensive, personalised service to all homebuyers and sellers,” says Barb. Barb Jarmey Conveyancing offers a fixedfee service for a standard conveyance, meaning clients have access to expert advice throughout the purchase and sales process. Barb also prides herself on making time

for clients at short notice. “When someone finds something they’re looking to buy they don’t want to be told they can see me next week,” she says. “I can nearly always make myself available within a few hours to sit down and go through a contract or call a client to offer guidance and make sure they’re informed and comfortable before making any big decisions.” Barb says opening the conveyancing firm with Anthony and Kerrie felt like a natural progression after 35 years’ experience in finance, real estate administration and property law. Working in complementary fields, the trio had worked together previously and soon realised the potential for a productive professional relationship. Kerrie’s original career background was in real estate, before moving into conveyancing in 2002. “I really enjoy assisting people who haven’t experienced buying a property before,” she says. “It’s the little things you do, that are not often known or even asked, that can really help people though that time of their life and make them feel more confident in what they’re doing.” Anthony, also the principal of Omega Lawyers, will provide legal supervision of the business, bringing almost 20 years’ experience in small, medium and large

business and law. Anthony is also a former President of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and works with a large number of businesses in Cairns and the Greater Far North. “I have a huge interest in conveyancing and property law, and rather than resourcing practitioners at Omega Lawyers to work in that field, it made sense to have a dedicated team and join forces with Barb to open a conveyancing practice with her.” To learn more about how Barb Jarmey Conveyancing can help you, contact call (07) 4080 7340, fax (07) 4080 7353 or email barb@bjcLAW.com.au

Home buying tips for the New Year: • Before looking at buying a home, see a financier about pre-approval so you know your limits. • Make sure names are spelt correctly on contracts – this is a common error that happens surprisingly often. • Remember we’re here to help iron out any legal issues and contract queries. CUSTOMISING YOUR WORLD any of us make a New Year’s resolution to freshen up that tired lounge room, or add a splash of colour to the kitchen. But like most New Year’s resolutions, we don’t always get

around to it. Northern Interiors can provide the motivation and inspiration to make sure you do. Most importantly, they have the expertise and experience to make sure you do it right. Owner Selena Murphy says the most common mistake people make is rushing out to buy furniture and accessories that don’t complement the space they’re working with. “A lot of clients purchase items because they like them, but when they put them into the room it doesn’t work and that can be a very costly exercise,” she says. “My suggestion is to really look at the space and the existing colours you need to work with, and decide how you’re going to use the space. “Take some notes and then start making decisions based on your needs and what is achievable in that area.” If that all sounds too hard, you can rely on Selena and her team to do the hard work for you. With more than 20 years’ experience in the interior design industry, and a passion for renovating and reselling homes in her spare time, Selena has a talent for seeing the ‘bigger picture’. “I can visualise the whole project in front of me very easily, I can’t explain it, it’s just what I do,” she says. “I loved colour as a child, and I guess that love has grown with me.” Before her career in home decorating and design, Selena worked as a vehicle spray painter doing customised paintwork. The job required a fierce eye for detail, colour matching existing paint jobs often completed overseas. “I suppose it set me up for where I am today, I’m still very hands on and I have a good understanding of colour.” Selena worked for Northern Interiors for 15 years before taking over the business 15 months ago. Since then, her son Matthew has joined the team and they have given the business a makeover of its own, with a new focus on styling rental properties being returned to the market for sale. The seller can lease furniture short term, or the buyer can choose to purchase the property furnished, increasing the rental revenue. “It’s a service people are wanting more and more,” she said. “It maximises the visual appeal of the property for the seller, but it’s also a convenient option for the buyer.” Northern Interiors also offers 12-months interest free finance on furniture and window coverings, and specialises in commercial and residential design and redecorating. Selena and her team pride themselves on being able to work to any budget, from new décor and scatter cushions or new furniture through to complete renovations and styling a new home. So if a new look for your home was on your Christmas wish list, contact Northern Interiors today.

Cairns best kept secret

northern property valuers By Michelle Dryburgh

VALUE R A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE IN PROPERTY

T

he team at Northern Property Valuers has seen the rise and fall of Far North Queensland’s property market – many times over. With 30 years experience in property valuation in the unique economy of the Far North, the business is an expert in the field. And the team strongly believes Cairns is on the brink of yet another major boom – but hopes property prices remain in check. Owner Trevor Gard says major developments in the region could cause false inflation, and urges buyers and sellers to be advised by a professional valuer. “There is no doubt that Cairns is on the verge of possibly becoming the most exciting tropical city to live in throughout the entire world,” he said. “I believe there will be an increase in activity, however I am cautious of prices rising quickly due to expectations of what may or may not happen. You only have to look back four years and see how quickly the market decreased due to inflated prices that were not sustainable” Trevor first joined Northern Property Valuers in 2010, before partnering with Max Dickenson in 2011 and now owns a 100 per cent share.

29

The business now has two offices, in Cairns and Mareeba, and a team of seven, servicing residential, rural and commercial properties across all of Far North Queensland, from Cardwell to Thursday Island. “I enjoy being director and love the business side of our operation,” Trevor said. “I love going into all types of properties and seeing how different people live. I love talking to individual clients and working through a possible project and determining with the client if it can work. I love all the opportunities this career has given me. Mostly, I love owning a business in this region and raising a family to enjoy all that we have here.”

Trevor’s tips for buying in the New Year • Don’t get into so much debt that it stretches your budget and living standards. No-one needs that pressure. • Take your time and don’t let anyone push you into buying in a hurry. • Get an independent, professional valuation of the property so you are aware of all the information needed to make a correct decision. • Make sure you have a savings plan in case something does go wrong. • Best of luck and enjoy property hunting in 2014, it is going to be very interesting.

janelle given K E N N E DY ’ S B E T TA HOME LIVING By Michelle Dryburgh

E LE CTRICAL S UP P LIER ELECTRIC YEAR AHEAD FOR KENNEDY’S

T

imes have certainly changed since Kennedy’s was established in 1929. Back then Horrie Kennedy was known for riding around Cairns on his pushbike wiring homes, businesses and repairing the odd appliance. The electrical company was the first to introduce washing machines to Cairns and sold some of the first televisions to arrive in the city. Today, Kennedy’s Betta Home Living stocks a full range of electrical appliances for the whole home, as well as delivery and installation, spare parts and servicing. But 85 years on, two things remain the same - commitment to quality customer service, and the family name – the store now managed by Horrie’s son Bill Kennedy and granddaughter Janelle Given. “Anyone can do a price for you, but where the challenge lies is within the service,” Janelle said. “Is the company reputable in terms of after-sales service and will they

still exist in five years’ time? With deliveries, is it just a drop off or do they provide a full installation service? Do they provide you with all the necessary information and treat you with respect and courtesy? These are all a part of the Kennedys experience. We understand how hard you’ve worked for your money, so when you spend it, you want to make sure you’ve covered everything and feel completely satisfied with your purchase.” The business is steeped in history. Horrie worked far and wide across the Far North, and was involved with establishing the wiring at Thursday Island hospital. With the explosion of electrical appliances came a new focus. The business now stocks everything from computers to mobility scooters. “If there’s something electrical you need, I’m sure Kennedy’s has it,” Janelle said. “We specialise in whitegoods such as fridges and freezers, as well as cooking appliances and we are major dealers in air-conditioning as well as one of the biggest distributors of Fujitsu cooling in Cairns and have strong ties with Panasonic, Kelvinator, Mitsubishi and Teco brands.”

31

CairnsLife

So whether you’re moving into a new home, renovating or upgrading, Janelle says Kennedy’s can help. “As we are a local, family business, we believe in the family network and setting a customer up in their new home is extremely important to us,” she said. “We pride ourselves in finding the right product for you, across all areas of your home, from appliances that suit the lounge, kitchen, laundry and bedrooms, to hot water systems, sinks, taps, garden care and more. It’s amazing what we can provide to our customers, it’s just a matter of asking and we will provide you with what you need.” To celebrate its 85th anniversary, Kennedy’s will be offering birthday sales and special offers throughout the year. “We’ve come through some very tough challenges over the years, and every experience continues to see us grow as a reputable business within our region,” Janelle said. “I am looking forward to the positive developments occurring in our city of Cairns, and I see us embracing these changes and continuing to grow from strength to strength.”

he son of a fisherman, Bruce Davey spent his childhood years and all his adult life with a hook and line in his hand. With salt water running thick and fast through his veins Bruce and his wife Juanita and their three children are leading an amazing life on Far Northern waters – making their living catching mackerel on board Gulf fishing vessel, the MV Wildcard. When Bruce heard the news that the Government would rezone the Marine Park – the act of which would significantly impact on his family’s livelihood and the livelihood of others in his profession – he took stock. Not content to sit on his hands and do nothing, he started a process that would see him take a year away from the Wildcard culminating in the production and distribution of a documentary film.In the past year he has dedicated all of his time and money to executive producing, Drawing The Line – that so far enjoyed in excess of 30 screenings - starting with its national launch at Seafood Directions in Port Lincoln in September followed by premieres in Western Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland. With just a producer and director, after travelling over 80,000 kilometres around Australia interviewing and filming, Bruce is very happy to have produced a world class documentary that is timely and topical given the current Governments pre and post election commitment to review the current Commonwealth Marine Reserve network. According to Bruce, Drawing The Line embraces each and every opportunity to present the Australian community and seafood lovers around the world with a rare insight into the Australian professional fishing industry - including the truth and lies behind both Marine Parks and modern day fishing.

32

CairnsLife

“Modern day professional fishermen are not against Marine Parks. To be a fisherman today you also have to be an environmentalist and have a high respect for eco system based fisheries management based on sustainability. Fishermen, like farmers, work for and on behalf of 95 per cent of Australians who do not have the opportunity to catch their own seafood. “The community, in cities like Cairns, are increasingly demanding when it comes to their seafood. People expect premium quality, local seafood harvested from local fisheries by local fishermen. And they are willing to pay the price for quality local produce that in effect, supports and grows diversified, local economies. “Australia has the finest seafood in sustainable abundance and is internationally recognised as having world class managed fisheries. Australians deserve to know that they can trust their professional fishermen to catch their seafood. Drawing The Line dispels the many ‘urban ocean myths’ while championing and humanising the fishing industry as true ‘eco heroes’. “Our family is extremely proud of our fourth generation fishing heritage and is representative of many well known Australian fishing dynasties that founded this country’s wealth and health. We all want to pass our hard learnt skills onto our children and their children. Mother Nature is a harsh and unforgivable task master – yet we’ve survived!” To find out more visit the website: www.drawingthelinemovie.com For information: Bruce Davey, Professional Fisherman, FV Wildcard Mob: 0428 114413. C

elebrating its sixth anniversary in business this month, the company has quickly built a strong clientele of referral based business. New Sales Manager and Coach Greg Keily watched the business grow long before joining the team, and says he noticed clients were drawn to their personal, honest approach. “And that’s something you can feel as soon as you set foot in their office, at 40 Aplin Street, Cairns,” he said. “Back when Powe Property began, I was also selling real estate myself and noticed the company focused on employing the right people who would understand, relate and offer a personal approach to sellers and buyers.” Greg has worked with four large franchise groups since beginning his career in real estate 10 years ago. It was a big change from his previous professions in the military as a Navy clearance diver and later a police officer, but he was soon ranked in the top 1% of sales people in Australia. He says he was drawn to Powe Property because its business practices and beliefs were in line with his own. “My original reason for choosing the real estate industry was I saw success could be achieved if I focussed on what the client’s wants were, treating them exactly as I would like to be treated, then looked at the best method for me to be able to not only achieve their goals but to exceed them,” he said. “This then became a passion of mine that I found most rewarding and something I see is a very strong desire within the Powe Property organisation.”

33

In the past 12 months, Greg’s focus has been on training, mentoring and helping other sales people achieve fantastic results, something he now enjoys at Powe. “Powe’s Property Consultants succeed as long as they have helped their clients achieve their goals, and the client profits from the experience,” Greg said. “As we know, in recent times many people have been looking down the barrel of losing money. But Powe’s Property Consultants focus on how to minimise that loss, which is a refreshing change and a testament to their commitment in acting on behalf of their sellers.” Greg is now working with Powe Property on designing strategies for what he says appears to be a positively changing market in 2014. “Powe now has more agents who strive to assist their clients to succeed and who actually understand that a company working environment has a significant effect on how they can best assist sellers and buyers,” he said. “At the end of the day, real estate is a people business and Powe Property just gets it!”

ver the coming months, I am going to pull, tug and dissect FABRICS, woo you with terms like “Ramie” and “agro-textiles” plus give you some fun and North Queensland related facts to encourage you to think about different materials. You see, I am a “Material Girl” – I may be slightly younger than Madonna, (who would have thought,) but I was a “Material Girl” way before her big hit in 1984. As a child, a hobby of mine was rummaging through Mum’s sewing room. When Mum would hint that I had outgrown my Sunday Dress, I knew this meant I must hand it down to my sister. Upset at first as I had spent hours at Mr Ogg’s (the local draper,) choosing the material, the special buttons and the pretty ribbon for this dress, my sadness was short-lived on my visit back to Mr Ogg’s. I carefully investigated the latest fabric arrivals and remnants bin – the beginning of a new Annie’s creation. At 11, the Minister’s wife gave me a Singer treadle sewing machine and Mum encouraged me to sew a patchwork quilt. It was fun at first, but YOU CAN’T WEAR a patchwork quilt! However, it gave me a taste for experimenting with lots of fabrics. These days I rarely sew, just a little mending. However, I do know how to sew and I understand fabrics.

to wear!

So for a bit of New Year advice: Go to your wardrobe and take a really good look at what is in there: If: it does not fit, get rid of it If: it feels uncomfortable, get rid of it If: you don’t love it, get rid of it If: the colour looks horrid on you, get rid of it.

From the day I opened my first boutique, I have always wanted everyone to love everything in their wardrobe and to NOT have the conundrum of “I have nothing to wear!’ And I concur with Miranda Kerr, when she says: “A rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. All flowers are beautiful in their own way, and that’s like women too. I want to encourage women to embrace their own uniqueness.”

ulubelle’s Clothing stocks women’s and girls’ fashion in tropical prints, vibrant colours and one-off designs. The women’s clothing range caters for sizes 8 to 18, and comes in a selection of cool, light, breathable fabrics perfect for the Cairns climate. Located on Edge Hill’s popular Collins Avenue shopping strip, Lulubelle’s Clothing boasts a feminine, vintage feel. The store is adorned with pink walls, dotted with jewellery and accessories and decorated with vintage furniture and oldworld bric-a-brac by the label RELOVE – by Fleur Nightingall. This is a clothing store with a difference - with a share of the profits supporting Destiny Rescue – an Australian organisation helping save overseas children from sex trafficking. The concept is a culmination of the ideas of owner Rebekah Child, who been in

the retail industry for the past five years, holds a Diploma in Counselling and has seen first-hand the poverty some of these children live in during her overseas travels. Rebekah also sponsors two young girls, and hopes that with the help of her customers that number will grow to 100 by the end of the year. “We all love a bit of retail therapy, and you’ll feel even better when you know you’re helping a child in need.” “It all comes down to giving. When you’re giving, you feel great.” Rebekah admits opening the shop was a form of therapy for herself too. She’s been on a journey of personal growth and self-discovery since her mum was diagnosed with cancer, attending life coaching workshops and Anthony Robbins seminars. “Mum lives overseas so by having the shop I will be able to visit her more often,” Rebekah said. “Mum and I have always enjoyed going shopping together too. And Lulubelle was a nickname mum used to call me when I was young. “The shop was one of those things where everything fell into place and I just knew I had to do it.” Retail is a familiar scene for Rebekah, who has owned three other shops at

Cardwell, Ingham and Charters Towers. Originally from New Zealand, she has been living in Australia for nine years, first in Western Australia and then Brisbane. But the warm climate of Far North Queensland drew to her to Cairns, which she says is an exciting city to be doing business in. “I’ve already met some really great people and Edge Hill has such a friendly, community feel,” she said. “I have lots of exciting plans for the year ahead, including some fun, unique, fundraising ideas for Destiny Rescue. And I look forward to receiving peoples’ feedback and suggestions about the shop.” Customer service is already high on the list of priorities for Rebekah, who strongly believes friendly service and reliability is increasingly valued in an era of faceless, online shopping. “Shopping at Lulubelles is a personal pampering experience where you will receive exceptional service, honesty and commitment to making you more than happy in your purchase,” she said. Lulubelle’s also offers a local’s club providing discounts and invitations to special in-store events and a birthday gift once a year. A

fter a month of mindless eating and binge drinking, many of us are feeling tired, sluggish, bloated and probably more than a little guilty. What’s done is done. But Cairns naturopath and founder of Seeds of Health Janelle Twine says now is not a time to dwell on the past. “It is the perfect opportunity to start the new year with a fresh, positive and healthy approach,” she said. “I encourage people to get to know their body, listen to it and trust the signs that it is giving.” Janelle believes one of the simplest ways people can detox their bodies is by adding green smoothies and fresh juices to their diet. She also believes strongly in the seven principles of health, being water, breathing, wholefoods, exercising, having a passion, healthy relationships and sunshine. “An awareness and balance between these principles allows the body to bring itself back to homeostasis,” she said. “Our bodies are incredibly intelligent and we simply need to give them time to heal by simplifying health and concentrating on these seven steps.” The most common health problems Janelle treats are digestive issues, depression, weight, menstrual irregularities and sinus issues. She uses iridology as her main assessment tool and her therapies have a large emphasis on whole foods and herbs. Janelle first delved into the world of natural healing as a teenager struggling with problem skin. She soon discovered the positive and negative effects food could have on skin, which in later years led her to explore the effects food had on the mind and body. Janelle studied ancient healing practices while living on a Native Indian reserve in Canada after highschool. She went on to pursue a career in primary school teaching before studying an Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy and then travelling overseas to study yoga and Ayurvedic practices in India. She also learnt more about herbs as medicine in Nepal and taught raw food workshops in Fiji. She returned to Cairns and worked in several clinics as a naturopath before establishing Seeds of Health in January 2011. “Since beginning my business I have started concentrating more on the whole foods side of the business, alongside my naturopathic consultations,” she said. “I sell delicious and nutritious raw cakes to cafes in town and am also running informative, interactive and fun food workshops allowing people to understand how important whole foods are and how easy it is to incorporate nutritious ideas in to their lifestyle. “Workshop topics vary between anti-inflammatory foods, raw foods, raw chocolate, how to incorporate more plant based foods into a diet, and healthy lunchbox ideas.” Janelle was invited to work alongside health coach Tyler Tolman and his father Don at a seven-day juice fast in Bali in November last year. A BEAUTIFUL BUSINESS

lison Ward had her first ever day spa experience during her first pregnancy. Just months later she was on her way to owning her own spa. “The sight, sound and smell of that first experience made me feel instantly at ease, I was in heaven,” she said. “And I thought to myself, ‘I think I would really like to do this myself ’.” Alison’s son was nine months old when the new mum began her Diploma of Beauty Therapy, dedicating her evenings to study. She returned to the same day spa for her job placement and graduated with a number of awards. Alison continued working at the spa for five years, taking a break only to have her second child, before buying her first salon – Essence of Beauty at Smithfield Shopping Centre. She went on to launch Senses Salon and Spa at the Mantra Amphora in Palm Cove, before opening Salt Spa at Peppers Beach Club in July 2011. Salt Spa specialises in professional skin care, firming and detoxifying body treatments, massage, pregnancy treatments and professional nail services. The spa uses products by Australian made and owned brand ASAP, as well as OPI nail care, and makes its own exclusive range of body wraps and scrubs using natural, Australian ingredients. “At Salt Spa we specialise in providing our clients a total body experience,” Alison said. “Whether they choose a simple eyebrow wax or a whole day of

indulgence, our team of professional therapists will leave them feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and revived.” And what better way to start a new year than with a refreshing spa treatment. Locals can take advantage of a generous 20 per cent discount on day spa treatments and 10 per cent off waxing and nail services. “A new year begins and our clients often feel the urge to shed last year’s baggage and start afresh,” Alison said. “Our detoxifying mud wrap, full body salt scrub and vichy shower will leave you feeling like a whole new you.” Alison says regular spa treatments should be used to complement a daily skincare regime at home to maximise results. She also recommends clients uses products with SPF every day to protect skin against the harsh Cairns climate. “Each client we meet in our salon is there for an entirely different reason,” Alison said. “Listening to our clients, understanding and recommending the right treatment options can make all the difference.” Salt Spa is also proud to support the Ronald McDonald House at Palm Cove. The primary carer is treated to a visit to Salt Spa for their their choice of a massage or facial and some well-deserved ‘me time’. A growing number of people will be enjoying some R&R at Salt Spa this year, with the introduction of hens parties and new bridal and couples packages. “Our industry changes at an incredibly fast rate with new products and advanced technologies constantly being developed,” Alison said. “We are really looking forward to a very exciting year ahead.”

RE LAX ATION KNOFF YOGA SCHOOL COMBINES 70 YEARS OF PRACTICE TO BRING WORLDCLASS STANDARDS IN YOGA TEACHING TO CAIRNS.

T

he school offers five levels of public yoga classes, from introduction to advanced and nine levels of yoga teacher training, from introduction to master’s as well as yoga therapy, general workshops and retreats. Knoff Yoga School opened in Cairns in 2004 – the creation of Nicky Knoff and James Bryan who have trained and practised yoga with some of the world’s greatest masters, and taught classes across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Germany, Austria, Malaysia, Bahrain and Qatar. The couple had previously established the Ashtanga Yoga Academy in Cairns in 1991, before moving to the United States in 2000. Nicky continues to travel four months of the year teaching courses across the nation and overseas, while James focuses his energies on the Cairns school, now located at the Pease Street Piccones Shopping Village. The school prides itself on going above and beyond usual standards in its teachings and customer service.

Unlike most yoga classes which operate with only one teacher, Knoff Yoga provides up to three teachers in its busiest classes, with a lead teacher teaching and demonstrating the positions, and the others assisting and adjusting students. A concierge meets and greets students at the front door. “It is a nice touch especially for first time students who are feeling a little anxious or unsure,” James said. “The concierge is waiting at the front door with a friendly smile and is happy to answer questions and show people around before we get started.” To support the transient nature of the Cairns population, Knoff Yoga classes operate on a casual basis, so students are not locked into a contract or forced to pay for classes they cannot attend. James said the no-pressure environment was perfect for beginners considering taking up yoga as a New Year’s resolution. The benefits are plentiful. Yoga can help people increase flexibility, balance and muscle strength, support weight loss, improve blood flow and circulation, reduce stress, relieve tension headaches and realign the body to heal muscle and joint aches and pains. “I think most people are aware now of the benefits of yoga, but don’t realise how much it improves the quality of our lives until they start practicing it,” James said. “The reason people come in the beginning is not the reason they stay long term. They might

52

CairnsLife

have one of these problems and yoga alleviates it, but they soon realise yoga makes them feel good all over, and they keep coming back.” January is always a busy month at Knoff Yoga School, but James admits after the initial boost of enthusiasm that comes with a new year, life tends to get in the way. He has these simple tips to help people keep up their yoga practice for ongoing health benefits throughout the year: Make time: Often people try to ‘find time’ for their yoga classes. I recommend you ‘make time’ and book it into your diary as you would any other appointment, or it won’t happen. Attend classes: The advantage of going to a class is you have professional guidance, and the momentum of the group carries you. Building the dedication to practise regularly at home takes a little while. With classes, the hardest part is getting there. Just do it: Everyone goes through it. Do I go home, or go to yoga? A new student once said to me, after work I always argue with myself about whether or not to go to yoga. I’ve decided to just stop arguing, side step the debate and just do it. She’s right, not once has anyone attending class at Knoff Yoga regretted it.

Visit www.theyogaschool.com.au for more information about the school, updated timetables for 2014 or to book your mat in a class.

“ I AM A TATTOO ARTIST BORN AND RAISED IN CAIRNS. I AM 38 YEARS OLD AND WORK AT MY OWN SHOP COSMECH INK WITH MY WIFE JODINE ON OCEANA WALK.”

How long have you been a tattoo artist for? I have been an ink slinger now for 6 years. I did my traditional apprenticeship in Cairns and I worked in WA for about 18 months. What is the most challenging tattoo you have ever done and why? The most challenging tattoo I have ever done was on a customer who was disabled in a wheelchair. It was difficult because he had a limited range of movement which meant I had to manouvre my body into weird positions, but I did and nailed it! Paul was also one of the nicest customers I have ever had. What was your first tattoo and how many do you have? The first tattoo I ever did was on myself, it was supposed to be a Koi and I have 24 random stickers and counting.

What hobbies besides tattooing would people be surprised to know you have? I am a drummer when I find the time. Is skin the only canvas you work on? No. I also paint with acylics on canvas. I am also experimenting with oils and water colours. What is the most amusing tattoo you have been asked to do? Thats easy. The most amusing tattoo was a stickman with a lawnmower I did on a young womens Mons (pubic bone). She wanted it because when she grew old and was in a retirement village or home, her carers would get a laugh while changing her nappy. Are there any famous artists, tattooists or not, that have influenced you down the path of your career?

Absolutely! I am influenced by many people famous and not so famous. International artists like Guy Aitchison and Nick Baxter. Australian artists like Byron Dreschler and Les Bowen Jnr. I am also inspired by objects, architecture and women. Is there is a style you haven’t tackled and do you have a favourite genre to work in? Yep. I have not really tackled old school style tattoos simply because I am known as a black and grey realism artist and did not get many requests. However I love working in all styles and genres, black and grey and colour. My favourite genres are Biomechanical (biomech) and realism but I am a self confessed artistic tart and love it all.

Business Profile

michael healy

AS GROUP DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING FOR QUICKSILVER CONNECTIONS FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS, MICHAEL HEALY IS ONE OF FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND TOURISM’S LEADING LIGHTS. HE’S WELL READ, INFLUENTIAL AND A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. BUT WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES MICHAEL THE UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL HE IS AND WHERE DID HIS JOURNEY BEGIN?

THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE ARE THE BEST! By Pip Miller

F

or an Aussie kid growing up in Sydney’s North Shore , life was idyllic. One of 4 children, Michael was thrust into the halo of Sydney in the seventies and after being taught to swim by the great Australian coach Forbes Carlyle, its no surprise that Michaels youth was dominated by swimming, lots of it, Surfing, which lead to him becoming a volunteer surf lifesaver for over a decade. Michael also was a volunteer bush fire fighter. A very competitive spirit was being nurtured. A good catholic boy, Michael spent his high school years at St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill – better known in Sydney’s private school echelons as ‘Joeys’. The heart of this prestigious establishment still beats strong today. If you could define or generalize a Joey’s boy you would say they are strong, they are tough and good on the footy field. It might not be at the top of the list, but they are also regarded good thinkers. Michaels sporting development took off with Swimming, Rugby and Rowing amoungst other sports. His competitive nature was in full development. As the website says, “To be part of the Joeys family is truly a gift for life.” This is very true for Michael and his family, who still have strong ties to “Joeys” today. Leaving school, Michael tested his mettle in the country. He left the surf and civilities of Sydney behind to jackeroo – working as a stock hand and roustabout on large properties in rural North West NSW and Southern Queensland. Character building though it was, a ‘life on the land’ wasn’t predestined and in 1984 he returned to Sydney. Michael found himself dabbling in a range of industries from media and real estate to hospitality. Looking back in hindsight, it wasn’t surprising that it was hospitality and tourism that landed his career, catching him hook, line and sinker. Working in hotels was the perfect job for Michael. He is a peoples person through and through – the life of the party – yet intelligent to boot. Michael is someone who can engage an audience, teach them a few tricks and all the while, leave them in stitches. The great divide between Sydney and Cairns

Trudi, Zoe and Jack Healy

Opening in china

was bridged for Michael in April 1992. At 28, Michael set off for Cairns riding his motorbike the complete 2477 kilometres. On arriving in the tropics, his first job was working at Palm Cove Travelodge. “To this day I fondly recall many great and memorable times in those early days in Palm Cove and the beginning of many solid relationships which endure today. “It was in 1994 that I secured my very own version of the ‘best job in the world’ when I started with Quicksilver. Since that time I have been selling Great Barrier Reef, Rainforest, Cairns, Port Douglas, Atherton Tablelands and the incredibly special destination that is Far North Queensland. Over his time in the North, Michael has also worked for The Cairns Hilton Hotel, Palm Royale and Down Under Tours, which he describes as outstanding but tough jobs which he learnt so much from the families and men and women who owned and ran these businesses. “Two decades later and my third passport, I feel truly blessed to be in a position where I continue to travel the world extensively and the very length and breadth of Australia. Calling on international wholesalers and ensuring Cairns and our region gets excellent exposure in these wholesale brochures and programs. As a result, I have accrued a multinational family of friends in both a commercial and personal pretext. The Tourism Industry in the North has been so good to me as have the many wonderful people in it” In 2008 Michael was recognized for his hard work and commercial nouse , by winning, not just The Queensland, but also the National Tourism Marketing Award - a first for the region and the Quicksilver group. Michael accredits this award to pulling 11 local companies together as well as securing the support of Federal, State and regional tourism bodies to brand 13 retail shops throughout China, called ‘Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef ”. These relationships, both personal and commercial, have contributed to the foundations of our region’s demand for high yielding clients out of China,” he says. On a community level, Michael has worked

in his capacity at Quicksilver to raise funds benefitting local charities while organizing special events. “I will never forget the fun we had in the “Quicksilver Raft Race” which was part of the “Fun in the Sun” Festival. Suffice to say, it was an absolute highlight and what I’d describe as very FNQ.” Michael was also instrumental in starting the Quicksilver Christmas Charity that has just celebrated its 10th year supporting the Salvos, Life Line, St Vinnies and Port Douglas Community, amongst others, in distributing goods collected and purchased. Away from work, he is currently Chair of a community housing organization that manages around 600 properties from Mossman to Babinda. While Michael’s work in marketing Cairns and Far North Queensland and his involvement at a local, grass roots level help define his character, he accords number one priority to his family starting with his wife of 10 Years, Trudi. A born and bred North Queenslander, Trudi has had her own fair share of character building experiences, not the least of which was being diagnosed with leukemia just over 14 months ago. Michael says this was a hugely challenging time for not just Trudi, but the broader family. “Apart from learning about ourselves, we discovered first hand all the wonderful work being done by the staff at Cairns Hospital and the Liz Plumber Centre. Trudi is currently in remission.” While the ‘Michael at work’ could be perceived as quite a different kettle of fish to the quieter version of ‘Michael at home’, the husband and father to Zoe, 9 years and Jack, 5 years is just as dedicated and passionate and comes complete with that same wicked sense of humour. The Healy family enjoy their time together and most especially when they are able to get away out to the Reef or to Trudi’s family home at Tully Heads where they can fish, and swim at the beach to their heart’s content. Michael’s childhood spent in Sydney lives on in his own kids and just goes to show that it is the ‘simple things in life’ that are most often the best!

very time a New Year comes along we seek out new ways to grow and change – our health, commitments, letting go of bad habits and experiences. Complimentary holistic therapist and ThetaHealer Jeannie Nickless says growth comes when we align our unconscious mind with our life’s desires, thoughts and words. “Changing unconscious beliefs gives power to those new thoughts you create to support your successful manifestation of your life’s goals whether it is for health, business, relationships or whatever it is you desire to change,” Jeannie says. “Our self worth, the way we feel about who we are is a direct reflection of our wealth, health, our life and our beliefs about who we are. “If we hold onto negativity we are less likely to be successful because our unconscious feels our reality or comfort zone is negative influencing our world so far. The power comes when we change those negative beliefs and feel the positive alignment with our desires.” If we want to give up smoking, lose weight, change our relationships with ourselves at home, work, play, love, and want to stop repeating unhealthy scenarios with every new relationship we have, Jeannie says she can help. “It’s as simple as changing your belief systems.” Using hypnotherapy and ThetaHealing, Jeannie has helped hundreds of people achieve these goals during her 12 years of practise. Jeannie works in partnership with clients’ health providers and medical practitioners, and has worked with people as young as four, to as old as 96. “People of any age can benefit from ThetaHealing or Hypnotherapy, there is no age limit to changing our life for the better.” Jeannie says the therapy is safe, relaxing and uplifting and works by changing unhelpful subconscious beliefs, leading to positive helpful change throughout every cell in our body healing dis-ease in any area of our lives. “When our parents created us, we were delivered a double whammy of beliefs from both sides of our genetics. “Our ancestors often lived a life of struggle and hardship, believing that this would bring them closer to their maker.....does that still work in this age? We can carry these beliefs hidden deep in our cellular memory. “When we are born we begin a journey through life that is influenced not only our genetics but by everyone we have contact with. “Our parents, grandparents, teachers and friends are all powerfully influential. If any one of them delivers a strong message to us be it negative or positive, we may take it on board as being the truth. These beliefs were often negative because of the experiences of our ancestors’ lives, wars, famine, poverty, leading us down a path of hardship and struggle that may create dis-ease. It is possible to create seeming magic by clearing our negativity.” Jeannie also offers classes for people wanting to improve business performance, as well as courses teaching the art of ThetaHealing to others. SAM SHARES HIS SECRETS By Michelle Dryburgh

F

inding a healthy work-life balance can sometimes seem impossible. Especially if you’re a business owner. Rather than working a nine-to-five job and spending evenings at the gym, the pub or relaxing at home, you probably find yourself working seven days a week, with little or no time to spare. Sam Harrop is a Master Business Coach who has built a career helping people make their businesses work for them. And he speaks from experience, first delving into the world of business at the age of seven selling chook eggs. As an adult he personally built and sold 11 different businesses, and as a result found himself in high demand from fellow business owners wanting to share his secrets to success. Originally from South Africa, Sam migrated to Australia with his wife and two children five years ago, settling in Cairns and establishing his business coaching office in Sheridan Street. Sam is now ranked in the top five per cent of business coaches worldwide, and his clients range from small local businesses to large organisations. He says the same principals apply to all businesses, but many usually fall into the trap of working physically in their business, instead of strategically on it. “A business should be viewed as a vehicle to help business owners achieve their personal goals.” “I help my clients establish their personal goals, then their business goals, identify where they are and where they want to be, and map out a plan to help them get there.” Sam’s goal is to help more people become owners of profitable and sustainable businesses. Workshops are just one of the ways he reaches his audience, and to help local businesses kick start the New Year he is giving CairnsLife readers free passes to his next business event, ‘Ultimate Business Tips’ in February. The two-hour workshop will be at the Pullman Cairns International on Thursday February 6, from 9am to 11am. Business owners can book online at www.samharrop.com.au and enter the promo code CAIRNSLIFE.

rackenback Chiropractic and Colonic Clinic is the only practice of its kind in Cairns with such a diverse range of treatments under one roof. The clinic specialises in Chiropractic treatments and Colonic Hydrotherapy, as well as neuromuscular therapy, electrical muscle treatments, acoustic wave therapy, oxygen therapy and hormonal balancing. Dr Debra Lawson established Crackenback in Cairns 10 years ago, after relocating from Sydney. She says the business has evolved enormously during the past 10 years, and she is always especially busy at the start of the year. “Over the Christmas break, people tend to take stock of their life and their priorities,” she said. “Living a healthier lifestyle is usually at the top of the list. Crackenback helps people do exactly that.” Dr Lawson believes people are responsible for their own health, but conflicting information often leaves people feeling confused. “I focus on educating my clients on what I call Intelligent Health, making great health decisions based on practical information and techniques,” she said. “Great Health is not just one thing, it is a balance of many aspects and we offer quite a few of the often missing ingredients. The first step for most people is to detox.” Dr Lawson said the most common misconception was that chiropractic treatment only offered relief for back pain. “It balances the spine structurally, which has the added bonus of improving nervous system function and overall well being. People who have chiropractic treatments regularly report feeling better and that has to be a good thing.” Colonic Hydrotherapy is another popular service offered at Crackenback. “Almost everyone is a little nervous the first time but within a few minutes they see how easy it is and wonder what all the fuss was about. I have years of experience in coaching people through this process. If anyone would like to know the real nitty gritty there is an interview on my website that will answer all of your questions.” For more information about Dr Lawson’s services visit www.crackenbackclinic.com.au. aggie Wilde specialises in helping people do exactly that. But she’s not a personal trainer, or a dietician. Also known as The Potentialist, Maggie Wilde is a Master Clinical Hypnotherapist, and she has dedicated her life’s work to helping others live life to their full potential. She believes that to change their body, people must first change their mind. “For many people, the battle with weight is often a battle in the head. There’s the part that wants to lose weight or get fit and the other part that still wants the unhealthy choices or pushes snooze instead of going for a walk.” Her astonishing results are capturing worldwide media attention following the release of her first book, Unzip the Fat Suit Using Your Mind. Among them is the case of Trish, 56, who has lost half her body weight with the help of hypnotherapy. At her heaviest Trish weighed 156kg and is now a healthy 76kg. Maggie said Trish was an emotional eater with destructive sugar cravings which she hid from friends and family, often eating chocolates, lollies and cakes on her way home from work. Doctors recommended gastric banding, but Trish was terrified of the concept after losing a family member to complications of the same surgery. “From our very first session, her behaviour changed,” Maggie said. “She would normally buy a cake and coffee every morning, but when she went to buy it, she had no cravings and no feelings of deprivation, she simply didn’t want it.” Maggie has been practicing hypnotherapy full time for the past 12 years. Although initiating her training in psychology, her interest turned to hypnosis in the late 90’s while researching alternative treatments for the autoimmune condition she had been diagnosed with. After she experienced significant health improvements from hypnotherapy, friends and family were also interested to learn more. “I never really planned to be in this role. I guess you could say it found me.” In addition to weight loss support, Maggie has helped people quit smoking, end addictions and bad habits, and treat emotional issues such as anxiety, depression and stress. Maggie said her role was to empower and educate clients how to help themselves by changing their thoughts and beliefs. “I just love the light that goes on in peoples’ eyes when it finally clicks that they’re in control,” she said. During her time in practice, Maggie has seen the public acceptance of hypnotherapy grow. What was once considered a ‘long shot’, or a ‘final hope’ is now often a first-choice treatment for a range of ailments. She said hypnotherapy was also now recognised by the medical and science fields. As a result, demand for Maggie’s services continues to grow. She treats clients around the world on Skype and offers one-on-one appointments at her Mind Potential Therapy Centre in Port Douglas. Maggie also hosts Unzip the Fat Suit Using Your Mind workshops right across Australia and her next event will be in Cairns this January. LASER LIGHTS THE WAY

M

ore than 10,000 people have broken free of bad habits and serious addictions with the help of Advanced Laser Therapy Clinics. The clinic was established in Cairns 10 years ago using laser exclusively to treat addictions to alcohol, nicotine and other drugs, as well as helping people lose weight and recover from issues like depression, anxiety and insomnia. In recent years the clinic has expanded its services to include anti-ageing and aesthetic procedures such as laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation and the removal of sunspots, moles and unsightly veins. Both sides of the practice complement each other to support director Chris Hall’s vision to treat both the physical and psychological symptoms of every patient. Most importantly, the clinic’s treatments offer a drug-free solution to healing both the mind and body. “You can’t take someone off drugs, put them onto another drug and assume you’ve helped,” Chris said. “Laser provides immediate results, safely

and effectively in a very therapeutic way.” Laser therapy works by eliminating physical symptoms of withdrawal, like cravings, anxiety and mood swings. The laser is applied to trigger points on the face, arms and legs, and emits a painless, relaxing signal which stimulates the release of endorphins, resulting in a heightened sense of wellbeing. Chris says it is these feel good hormones that give patients a better chance of successfully beating an addiction, whether it be to food, cigarettes, or illicit drugs like heroin and amphetamines. Most addictions can be treated in as little as two hours. “It is a very calming, relaxing experience that people enjoy having,” he said. “And it works for everyone, whether a client has been an alcoholic for 20 or 30 years, or they’re a social drinker simply wanting to reduce their drinking.” Patients come to Advanced Laser Therapy from all over Australia, with a large number of clients from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. As a result, the clinic’s client base has grown largely from word of mouth, with satisfied patients referring friends and family members for help with their own issues.

60

Chris is supported by two other highlyskilled specialists, and the team is committed to using only the gold standard in laser technologies and the world’s best medical grade lasers for all of its treatments. Despite the impressive results, Chris occasionally comes across clients who are sceptical of his treatments, particularly those encouraged to seek help by friends or family. “I welcome these people wholeheartedly because they are usually the easiest to help,” he said. “When they experience what we do and how easy it can be, they wrap both arms around it and hang on.” January is typically the busiest time for the clinic’s health and wellbeing treatments, as people seek to fulfil New Year’s resolutions to quit smoking or lose weight. And with a free, no obligation consultation offered to every new client, there has never been a better time to consider laser therapy.

LASER U RO L O G Y

In December Cairns Urology purchased a Urological Laser. This is an instrument which has a 0.2mm diameter fibre which transmits a laser beam on to stones in the urinary tract causing them to shatter into “dust”. This enables them to be extracted or passed with minimal discomfort when the patient goes to the toilet. In addition the laser can also be used to treat polyps and areas of scarring called strictures as well as some localized cancers in the kidney. These procedures are carried out with an operation called Uretero-Renoscopy or Pyeloscopy. With the patient under anesthetic, a flexible endoscopic instrument is passed up through the normal “pipework”. It is passed into the opening of the bladder (urethra) and then into the opening of the ureter to visualise the inside of the ureter and kidney. The ureter is the tube which takes the urine from the kidney down to the bladder. The laser fibre is then passed down a very small channel in the instrument and on to the stone - the Urologist is then able to activate the laser disintegrating the stone. This instrument is able to go around the normal curves in the kidney and can also get into the natural “pockets” which occur in the kidney. This procedure is complementary to ExtraCorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) which is an operation which utilises sound waves passed through the side and aimed on to the stone causing it to break up. In some

cases the stone may be too small or too hard for the ESWL machine to work and this is when the laser is a significant advantage. The good news is that patients only need to stay for about 4 hours in Cairns Day Surgery and may be back at work in two days. Of course, prevention is always better than cure and in the warmer months of the year the chances of making kidney stones are much greater. This is because at this time of the year people have a greater tendency to dehydration as they lose more fluid through sweating. The answer is really simple: drink more water! An average sized adult should consume 2-3 litres of water per day. If a squeeze of lime or lemon juice is added this will further reduce the chance of stone formation. Even in airconditioning the movement of the air may appear to leave the skin dry but significant sweating still occurs in the humid Far North Queensland climate.

K eeping T HE

spark alive… By Michelle Dryburgh

She’s complaining about him leaving the toilet seat up. He’s complaining about her wearing those granny panties to bed. Again. Sound familiar? Then you’re probably shacked up, and facing the very un-sexy side to life in a long-term relationship.

I

f romantic dinners at your favourite restaurant have been long forgotten and your conversation topics are limited to bills, grocery lists and whose turn it is to take the rubbish out, you’re probably feeling like you’ve ‘lost the spark’. Many couples mistake this feeling for falling out of love. Petty disagreements can turn into hurtful arguments and set you on a destructive path. But all of that can be avoided with what I like to call ‘housekeeping’ – and I’m not talking about him picking up his dirty socks and jocks (although boys, that’s a good place to start if you want to keep the peace!) Just like regular housekeeping, it only takes a little bit of effort to have everything looking (and feeling) like new, and the more often you do it, the easier it is to maintain. Communication truly is the key to success. In our busy modern lives, it can be difficult to find time to talk. And if you work at different times of the day or one of you works away, you might go days or weeks without seeing each other. Soon enough, important occasions are overlooked, days

off are double booked, and trouble ensues. It’s important to make time to talk once a week about the ‘logistics’, such as upcoming rosters, appointments, visits from the inlaws and who’s taking the kids to soccer practice or walking the dog. Write a weekly planner on a whiteboard so you know who’s doing what and it can help avoid these more mundane conversations for the rest of the week. It’s also important to talk about the bigger picture – feelings, emotions, needs and wants – to make sure you’re both on the same level and working toward the same goal. It doesn’t need to be every week, but be sure to make time to check in with each other, and be prepared to both listen, and contribute to the conversation. You’ll feel more confident and positive about the direction of your relationship in no time. Now for the fun stuff – spending quality time together. Outside of work you’re looking after children, maybe going to gym or sports practice, beers with the boys, coffee with the girls, then there’s the grocery shopping, cleaning, washing… the list goes on. Sometimes we get so caught up in our

62

busy schedules we forget to make time for each other. If you can, try to make time to do something special, and fun, once a week. It might be lunch at a favourite café, an afternoon walk on the beach, pushing each other on the swings at the local park, or spending ‘date night’ in the bedroom in some nice, or naughty, lingerie (or at least a hint of perfume and your teeth freshly cleaned!) And finally, remember what initially drew the two of you together. You both had your own hobbies, interests and friends and it’s just as important to make time for these, providing they’re healthy and positive contributions to your life. We can begin to think of our partner as an extension of ourselves, which can lead to negative or controlling behaviours. You are both individuals, so respect, and enjoy, each other’s differences, and you’ll always having something new to talk about. Remember that feeling when you first met? You can have it again. A relationship should never stop being fun, and if you keep up your housekeeping, you’ll have plenty of fuel to keep the fire burning.

C ONT RIBUTO RS Not an unusual question and one which often opens the conversation in a couple’s counselling session. Seems like everyone wants better sex but I ask you when was sex the absolute best for you? What made it the best then? The time? The place? The location? Chances are the best sexual experiences you had with your partner were when there was nothing separating you; when everything was settled.

By Ian Ritchie

I’m talking about ‘better’ in the sense that you felt that special closeness; that intimacy with your loving partner; almost like you were one together...ahhh that bliss. So it occurred to me that the secret to better sex was nothing to do with sex but all about resolving differences successfully together, so that nothing separated you and there was only room for intimacy. It seems to me that successful couples have identified what I call ‘the formula’ for resolving differences well and therefore leave the ground open for intimacy. You need to be able to communicate and negotiate well with each other as this demonstrates your commitment to your partner; that you actually love, respect and trust each other enough to talk about what’s wrong with them!

Imagine how great it would be to have your partner really listen, trust and accept your viewpoint even though you disagreed with them. How constructive it could be to work together on identifying the problem between you both and then working cooperatively through solutions; finding the third way, the relationship way that moved you forward together. So then, what’s left to separate you after finding the third way....NOTHING! So go for it. That’s the way to have great sex. Finding the formula to resolve differences will help you find each other and lead to greater and greater intimacy in your relationship. Successful couples know there are no limits to the love and intimacy possible together but couples need to be able to communicate with one another and that’s the secret to having ‘the best sex’.

New Year,

NEW S TAFF

A

s we welcome the new year it is a time to review your staffing needs. If you are a business who has been unable to fill your skilled vacancies from within the local labour market then you may be able to sponsor a foreign national for a temporary or a permanent residency visa to fill that vacancy. Cairns and the surrounding areas are considered by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) to be regional areas and as such there are two main visa options for employers to sponsor overseas nationals to fill skilled vacancies. The first is the temporary subclass 457 Temporary Work Skilled visa program (457) and the second is the permanent Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) program. The 457 visa program allows employers to sponsor overseas workers in certain skilled occupations in their business. The visa is only ever temporary and it is up to the employer to nominate the time of the sponsorship of the overseas employee being anywhere up to a maximum of 4 years. The nominated occupation needs to be on the 457 occupations list and the sponsoring employer must meet training benchmarks, labour market testing, sponsorship obligations and other criteria to become an approved sponsor. 457 sponsors also have the obligation to pay market

salary rates to their overseas workers. The 457 employee filling the position must have the skills, qualifications and an employment background which match those required for the position. Applicants must also meet English, health and character requirements and hold their own private health insurance. The RSMS visa program is another option which allows regionally located employers to fill skilled vacancies with overseas workers. To be eligible employers must have a genuine full time vacancy which is available for at least 2 years. The program grants permanent residency to the visa applicant on the condition the applicant remains working for the employer, in a regional area in their nominated position for 2 years. RSMS visa applicants must have the relevant qualifications or working experience for the nominated position, be under 50 years of age and meet licensing, English language, health and character criteria. There are three streams available under the RSMS program and there are also some exemptions available from skill, age or the language requirements. For advice, guidance and assessment on your eligibility to sponsor overseas workers to Australia you should seek the advice of a Registered Migration Agent.

C ONT RIBUTO RS

Last month I was lucky enough to be offered an educational to New Caledonia and I thought why not! I have not been there before, and to be honest, the majority of the feedback I have had from clients who have been there has not been particularly favourable. Rationale justified, I set off to find out for myself. New Caledonia is an archipelago in the Pacific, just over two hour’s flight from Brisbane. Whilst it is part of the Melanesian sub region, it is actually a special collectivity of France and even an EU member. Grande Terre is the main island and the capital Noumea is located here. It is divided by a rugged mountain range, with the east covered in lush rain forest and waterfalls and the west, rolling plains suitable for farming. To the southeast, lies romantic Ile des Pins (Isle of Pines) with its slender pines and stunning beaches. Surrounding all of this is the second longest double barrier coral reef in the world, after our own Great Barrier Reef; forming the world’s largest lagoon. To the east are the Loyalty Islands, Mare, Lifou and Ouvea, where life proceeds at a leisurely place. As soon as you set foot in Noumea you know you are overseas. It’s got the whole exotic French thing going on, funny little cars all on the wrong side of the road and noone has any idea what you are talking about. Noumea was a pleasant surprise, by far the most westernized capital in the South Pacific and possibly the most beautiful; it still retains that laid back tropical town feeling, not unlike Cairns. They call it the Nice of the Pacific. We stayed at the beautiful Chateau Royal Beach Resort and Spa right on the beach in the up market suburb of Anse Vata. Formerly a Club Med resort, the property has recently undergone a complete refurbishment and of all the properties we visited in Noumea, it was by far my favourite. All of the rooms are self catering, apartment style with balconies and glorious views. They have a number of very chic bars and restaurants to choose from and don’t miss the seriously decadent Aqua Royal Spa pool.

Anse Vata and nearby Baie des Citrons (Lemon Bay) provide ample opportunity for you to soak up the cosmopolitan, French style café atmosphere, but there are plenty of other ways to stay busy and entertained, whether it is shopping in the abundant boutiques or simply lazing away the day at the beautiful beaches. Water sports abound or you can also visit one of the nearby offshore islands simply by heading down to the jetty and jumping on one of the regular transfers. We visited L’Escapade Island which is the closest place to Australia that you can stay in an overwater Bungalow. Be sure to visit the architecturally acclaimed Tjibaou Cultural Centre with its fascinating insights into the local Kanak culture and Pacific life as far afield as Hawaii. I could drag out all of the south sea clichés to describe out next destination, Ile des Pins; suffice to say they own the self proclaimed title of “Paradise on Earth”. Named by Captain Cook for its unique vegetation of soaring pines that line the pure white and turquoise shorelines; you just have to go there. Accommodation options are limited and we stayed at the Le Meridien which has one of the most enviable locations on the Island. The Natural Pool is roughly a 30 minute walk through a crystal clear, sandy, tidal riverbed from the Resort and is a must see. A small gap in the rocky coastline forms a natural inland pool. Gorgeous blue water, abounding in sea life, with plenty of coral, surrounded by a small beach; the perfect picnic destination. So now having experienced first hand the pleasures, and in particular the divine French cuisine, New Caledonia has to offer I have to ask myself, why the negative feedback?

The vast majority of my clients who have been there and did not like it are cruise passengers and I think that has something to do with it. Despite the fact that Noumea has long been a popular destination for cruise companies, the port, and the area surrounding it, is not pretty. If you are on a ship that stops here and you don’t go further afield then you are going to miss out. Book a shore excursion on board, jump on a boat to Duck Island or get into a cab and go over the hill to Anse Vata. New Caledonia is definitely worth visiting, whether for a short romantic escape or a longer family holiday, but beware it is expensive! Wherever you choose to travel this year have fun.

TESTIMONIALS 2014... Believe Anything is Possible & Join Team EmPowerFx

W

“My life changed for the better when I met Emma in January 2012 and started training with the emPowerfx crew”

Tae Jos ts ons

hen I started training, just doing the 400m warm up lap left me puffing and gasping for air! One of the first things I told Emma was about a recurring dream I had where I was a great runner and could run long distances. Running was something I thoroughly detested and was terrible at. This, I now realise is because these are the messages I was telling myself. Your thoughts become your reality and Emma encouraged me to challenge myself, my thinking and made me believe I could achieve whatever I set my mind to. I am proud to say that in June 2013 I completed my first Half Marathon (21.1km) in the Cairns Half Ironman team event. My next goal will be a full marathon (42.2km) run in 2014. Emma is not just a personal trainer but more of a life coach who is genuinely passionate about helping you become the best version of yourself and makes you realise that anything is really possible if you believe it is. Emma is always there to provide support, motivation and inspiration along your journey to achieving your goals. I am truly lucky to have found such a warm-hearted, genuine and inspiring person. I cannot speak highly enough about training with emPowerfx. If you want to join a great bunch of people who are welcoming, supportive, encouraging and enjoy having a laugh, then you must come and join us. We’re not just a training group, we are like a family. Not only will you meet an amazing bunch of people and create some great friendships, you will also become a happier, healthier, and fitter version of yourself.

“If you like the idea of group training with a bunch of like-minded people seeking fitness and fun, then emPowerfx is definitely for you”

or many I had been overweight, unfit, unmotivated and not particularly happy. I had tried several diets and started many exercise programs that always started promisingly, then seemed to lose steam after a month or so. At 31 years of age and weighing 107 kilos, as well as having high blood pressure, I bought an exercise bike and managed to lose 7 kilos. Needing something more , I enquired to Emma Miller at emPowerfx about boxing fitness classes, as I had always been interested in boxing. Emma & Meagan were friendly, welcoming and very helpful with challenging routines and advice on safe and correct training. One session a week has now turned into five sessions a week that include boxing and BootCamp, which are regularly held in different outdoor locations and provide a great atmosphere for exercising. Now at 32, and weighing 90 kilos, my diet and medical condition is completely under control. I’m even attempting triathlons, which is something I never dreamed I would be capable of ! emPowerfx and their friendly training crew have provided me with fitness, friendship, healthy lifestyle and the ability to achieve my goals, even though it sometimes hurts!! For the first time in my life, I actually feel alive!! P.S – I hate mountain climbers ;)

mma has been with me ever since I decided to go on the roller coaster to a better, healthier lifestyle. When things going great she was there, things not so great she was there. Then the comfort zone theory came along and boy did Ms Miller take me out of that. You could see the whites of my eyes, and probably still see a little bit there because I’m permanently there now achieving things, I always watched other people do and thought nawh I can’t do that. Well, it appears there is no such thing as “can’t” only can do with Emma. Being part of Coral Coast and 70.3 Ironman teams was my total break point. Yep, whites totally showing thinking there is no way could do that swim, I was going to be eaten by a croc, or swam over or, or, or. Yep all the excuses counted up until Emma said yep it’s going to be hard, but you can do it. She believed in me when I didn’t and slowly week after week, tears (oh yeah there were tears) and smiles, it started to come together. There has been a smile on my face ever since crossing that 70.3 Ironman finish line. A little bit, thank gawd that’s over, but then there is a huge part; I did it, holy dolly batman (kids might read this I have to keep it clean) I did it. On crappy days I think about that day and all hard work went in to achieve it, smile and you know what….what’s next I say, and hopefully get over this mid life crises soon. Over time Emma and Empowerfx crew have become family, support you in good and bad times. Emma is there to chuck you out of the comfort zone and achieve things you never thought possible. It’s an adventure but one worth jumping on board for because you won’t look back because you won’t need too, a very special person will be there supporting you all the way.

have been training with Emma and Meagan for 3 years….everything from BootCamp & core sessions, to boxing & multi day fitness retreats. What began as a casual trial of various fitness sessions has resulted in a long lasting and sustained commitment to keeping fit with emPowerfx. Right from the start, I recognised qualities in Emma and her team that drew me in, with their positive energy, deep sense of commitment to individual’s needs, professionalism and natural coaching style. They also clearly loved their jobs. Whilst Emma’s knowledge, work ethic, coaching talent and passion for fitness are clearly evident, it is her sincere warmth, sense of humour & sheer enthusiasm that keeps people coming back, year after year. She has a natural ability to bring out the best in people both physically and mentally, helping people achieve mind and body balance. There’re lots of words to describe Emma Miller and her emPowerfx team – motivational, inspiring, dynamic, generous – but the thing that stands out for me is her sincerity and genuine desire to get people excited about feeling good. I’m proud to be part of the empPowerfx crew and to say that Coach Miller is not only an awesome coach, but a great mate.

“It is difficult to explain how much your life will change when you meet Emma Miller and start training with the Empowerfx crew. Every person in the team is so welcoming, supportive and ready to step out of their comfort zone.”

efore 2013, I considered myself to be healthy and fit. However, I would never step out of my comfort zone, purely because I thought I was at my best. Like many people, I would often compare myself to other people and consider their fitness and confidence impossible for someone like me. I started a training programme with Emma in January 2013, which incorporated boot camps and a schedule leading up to an Olympic Distance triathlon in June. My fitness, and more importantly, my confidence, improved dramatically! I started to achieve things that I never thought possible, trust in my abilities, and wake up every morning being so inspired by myself and my teammates. It is easy when you train with such supportive people like the Empowerfx team, being led by such an incredible woman, Emma Miller. I feel like a new person after training with the Empowerfx team. Physically, I have improved beyond belief; finishing my first Olympic distance triathlon and completing a 90km bike ride in Cairns 70.3. But beyond this, I have gained mental strength, determination and confidence in myself that never existed. The Empowerfx team and Emma are exactly that...Empowering. I now truly believe that anything is possible. If you are ready to test your limits, try something new for the first time in a supportive environment or start believing in yourself, this is for you! There are a great variety of classes and times, fantastic coaches and life changing team.

Some of us look for a relaxing escape – day spas, yoga retreats, or days spent sipping cocktails by the pool. But for others, it’s all about adventure – finding a destination or experience to thrill and excite. Whether you’re planning to add to an already long list of travel destinations, or just dipping your toe in the water, there’s always somewhere new to be explored. This month CairnsLife asks some well-travelled voyagers for their suggestions on the best destinations for an adventure… “Camping in the Serengeti, laying awake all night listening to wild animals walking around outside my tent is the best experience I’ve ever had. Hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, Turkey is amazing too, 95 balloons up most mornings.” – Scott Henry. “Nicosia, Cyprus – it’s the last divided city in the world.” – Greg Diamantis

“Peru… a must see. India… total cultural shock.” – Adele Holland “Skiing or hiking in the Alps in Switzerland, Austria, France or Poland and sailing the oceans in Croatia, Turkey and Greece.” – Lisa Eastick “Memories are made with great people anywhere. Travel with the right person and everywhere is an adventure.” -Camilla Farnham-Browning “South America. The diversity in culture and landscapes here is very different to what we are used to at home. Bolivia has high altitude deserts, brilliant mountains, salt flats, jungle, the Amazon River… Columbia is about to explode as a tourist destination. Down south Patagonia is incredible with its glaciers, lakes and world class trekking.” – Matthes Bonollo “I went skydiving from 16,500 feet over the Abel Tasman National Park near Nelson, New Zealand and it is by far the best thing I have ever done.” – Amy Rhodes “The cliché is ‘getting lost in Venice’, but seriously it was amazing. Being told ‘don’t go down that street you will get attacked’ in Barcelona was quite amusing. The French Riviera for

its crazy ‘carnie-ness’ and New York, because it is the most spectacular city in the world.” – Loretta Wilmink “China- it’s such a conundrum. The cities are metropolitan and amazing. Head out of town and onto the road less travelled, and you’ll see the amazing challenge that faces china in the years ahead as they try to navigate industrialism and commercialism. Taking time to travel the Himalayan Tibetan region of China is a must - a step back in time where men still bear swords and women leave their children at home while they fossick for ‘magical’ grubs. The Tiger Leaping Gorge is worth seeing, with stunning rice dragon terraces down south. The stunning peaks of Guilin are breathtaking for even the most seasoned traveler. And Nepal is amazing. Mountain biking is tough but spectacular, think views of Mount Everest as you sit enjoying a well-earned Everest beer. And then hiking – I highly recommend the Annapurna circuit. It’s 5500 metres and the greatest challenge I’ve ever experienced, but offers the most stunning Himalayan scenery - icy avalanches as you walk, breaking away from the snow-capped mountains that surround you as you hike for 15-25 days. Beautiful people and an amazing experience.” – Lisa Downs

New Year

S

o 2014 is nearly upon us. Forget the fad diets, giving up the cigarettes, making a Million $$ and focus on what you can do….travel! As a busy travel agent it has often struck me that people travel for many different reasons. Some to relax on a beach and read a good book, some like to cruise on a large ocean liner and enjoy the entertainment, the food and the sea going lifestyle for a week or so. Others like to explore jungles, ancient ruins, mysterious cultures, or simply visit long lost relatives or discover their ancestry. Personally I like to visit other cultures

N E W D E S T I N AT I O N and immerse myself in the local way of life, eat exotic local foods, drink new concoctions that I simply couldn’t imagine, here in Cairns. I like to “people watch”, not in a “creepy” kind of way, but just to see others that aren’t on holiday go about their business. I then like to come home to Cairns and think how lucky I am to live in such an idyllic part of the world. Oh yes, I have lived in England and New Zealand for many years and I have visited many lands around the globe, but for me seeing the verdancy of Cairns as I return home from an overseas trip cannot be beaten. We are so lucky to

have an international airport in town allowing us to easily connect to exotic destinations, literally from our own doorstep. So I implore you all to make 2014 the year you travel, experience a new country, try some new tastes and compare your life to those in the world around you. It is an exciting and rewarding pastime and it all starts with a simple call or email to your experienced travel agent; we turn a trip into a holiday. Cheers,

DOG

I

dentify the breed of your dog and its distinctive characteristics. Many dogs are simply exhibiting inherent behaviour which is natural to them but completely unacceptable to their owner. Cross breed dogs may have several different instincts working in unison which may be contributing to their unruly actions. Physical stimulation is crucial for any dog. A dog that is sufficiently exercised is less likely to misbehave. The owner should always be in control of the walk and the dog should be responsive to numerous commands around the home and out in public. Obedience classes guide owners and their dogs through a series of different exercises that that will assist in controlling the dog in various situations. Obedience is physically and mentally stimulating and will benefit even the most exuberant of canines. This

Even the most committed owner can become frustrated with continual destructive and disobedient conduct from their beloved canine companion. There are many things to consider which may be influencing the way your dog reacts in certain circumstances. Is the behaviour genetic or is it environmental?

training also helps to strengthen the owners relationship with their dog. Allowing your dog to make all the decisions may also influence the way they behave. They feel more secure in an environment where there are boundaries that are maintained through clear and repetitive interaction. Instead of always acknowledging incorrect behaviour give the dog a direction and then reward the desired response. Your dog will learn that attention always follows acceptable behaviour. Destruction around the home can be extremely frustrating. What may be disheartening to the owner is generally very rewarding for the dog. Ensure they have a variety of items to chew and play with during your absence. Designate an accepted area for your dog to dig which may deter them from destroying your treasured allotment.

73

CairnsLife

The environment in which a dog lives is also relevant when addressing a behavioural pattern. Sudden changes in routine or emotional upset in the family will often result in unusual or unexplained behaviour. Be aware of how changes in your life affect your dog. Dogs are not born of knowing how to behave in our world. Raising a well behaved dog takes time, patience and a lot of love but the rewards are endless!

W

e are now coming into the wet season in Tropical North Queensland, meaning we have to prepare ourselves and our houses for the weather to come. In preparation for the weather ahead, its time to cyclone proof our houses, just in case we get any unwanted cyclones coming this way. Most citizens of Cairns have been through a cyclone or two over the years and know the drill, but here is a quick refresher of some important tips to get you started. Firstly bring in any loose objects that you have in your backyard or garden, anything that

season could be picked up by a gust of wind and potentially become dangerous. Beat the grocery shopping craziness, this means stock up on your essentials, batteries, UHT milk, before a cyclone has formed and is on its way. Make sure you have an emergency kit, this will usually include a battery powered radio, torch light, first aid kit, and anything else you will need in an emergency. Websites such as the Bureau of Meteorology constantly have great resources to help refresh and get you prepared for the worst. Don’t leave it until it’s too late to get you and your family prepared for the Cairns wet season.

A positive start to for

2014

home bui lding I’ve written during 2013 that Cairns is poised for an increase in building activity

This is truer now more than ever with low interest rates; current building approvals the highest since 2010; average vacant land sales the highest since 2007 and rental vacancies the lowest since 2007. All this goes towards an increase in house and land construction prices. We are only just starting to get investors back into the residential building market and these investors will want a better return on their investment. We need to build more housing in the Cairns region to keep up with the demand The existing land that has been available over the last few years is nearly sold out and developers are now working on the future land releases. Some developers have waiting lists and are taking holding deposits on land that won’t be available till mid year. We haven’t seen that kind of activity for many years. This means that the next releases will be more expensive than what’s available now. Supplier’s have held their prices for the past few years but now that there is movement in the market, their prices are starting to creep up. Most sub-contractors haven’t had any increase in their pay in the last 5 years and they in turn, will increase their prices.

Posh Lifestyle is a contemporary indoor/outdoor furniture design company importing quality products from around the world to enhance the look of commercial and residential properties at affordable prices. It’s the old adage of ‘supply and demand’. Our building company is busier this Christmas than we have been for some years and we see it gradually growing during 2014 and beyond. I remind you again that if you are thinking of building a new home then it’s probably the time to get that project moving. We are expecting prices increases and, as a result of the increasing demand, there will be longer building times. So, start the year off with some good planning. Talk to us about building your new home and end this year living in your new Affinity Designer Home.

TCM are specialists in linking people and property. At the start of every New Year comes a rush of people looking to buy, rent or sell – and TCM can help every step of the way. The local team of Property Managers, Sales Agents and Body Corporate Managers provides a one stop approach to property needs whether you’re an owner occupier or an investor. “Our property managers undertake inspections and then communicate back to not only the owner but the Body Corporate for items on Common Property that require attention,” said Lucy Ewens, business development manager. “We use only qualified, insured maintenance contractors and we remain independent - meaning no kickbacks or commissions.” TCMstrata also provides consultancy for new developments, liaising closely with all consultants to ensure deadlines are met and contingencies are prepared. “Our marketing plan is simple, give a great service at a competitive price. We offer incentives to loyal clients that utilise multiple services such as rental and strata,” Lucy said. “This ethos is the reason that many of our clients are still our original clients from over 20 years ago.” Staff receive regular training to stay informed about industry changes, including the pending review of Queensland Property Laws which will have widespread effects. TCM is a medium size company committed to supporting the local community through sponsorships and other fundraising and support initiatives. The team consists of Kelly Roberts and Greg Roberts as owners and directors, Cory Sigley, Peta Balmer, Michelle Henning, Nicki Scrivener, Lysa Neutal, Alison Flaws, Danielle Jennings, Lucy Hanrahan, Jocelyn Chirio, Carissa Young, Kerry Taranto, Marni Taranto, Kylie Moore, Amanda Johnstone, Lucy Ewens and Ben Lee Long. Decisions are made on the spot locally, alleviating the frustrating process of dealing with different offices for different processes. “Our team remain part of our family well beyond their employment and our low staff turnover reflects this as does our number of returning staff.”

Ingredients: One 350g bag of frozen mango chunks 1/2 cup cream of coconut 1/2 cup coconut milk, plus more if needed Juice of 2 limes Lime and mango slices, for garnish, optional Method: Put the mango, cream of coconut, coconut milk and lime juice in the blender and puree until silky smooth. Add additional coconut milk, a tablespoon at a time, if needed to get the mixture moving in the blender. Pour into two glasses, garnish with mango and lime slices; serve immediately.

BOOTHROYD TINT A CAR

DESPITE THE NAME, THIS LOCAL BUSINESS OFFERS MORE THAN CAR TINTING AND WRAPPING SOLUTIONS – THEY’RE ALSO EXPERTS IN HOME AND OFFICE TINTING.

O

perating for more than 20 years, Tint a Car on Scott St offers car tinting, protection and wrapping as well as home and office tinting. Being in the skin cancer capital and living in the Far North, tinting your car and home is beneficial for not only your health, but also for heat reduction and in turn energy savings. “A lot of new homes in Cairns aren’t designed for the tropics – there’s a lot of glass and the homes can become quite hot,” tells owner Terry Carmady, who believes women often have a better eye for detail and are more particular when it comes to tinting, which is why he was happy to take on female sales manager and installer, Katrina Boothroyd. Much to some people’s surprise, Katrina goes out to organise a quote before installing the high quality tint herself. Katrina was looking for full-time work last year and applied for the job at Tint a Car. “I loved it from the start,” confesses Katrina, who admits to being a perfectionist when it comes to tinting. “It can be challenging at times with odd shapes, but I’m a people person and love getting out and going to

87

gorgeous houses.” The company not only does heat-reduction and privacy tint for businesses and homes, but also decorative and custom tint for houses through to large-scale buildings, with endless options for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or glass doors. The glass can be a feature in the home or a business logo can be featured. The tint proves to be very economical and with easy payment options and no interest, customers can pay it off slowly. “People are made aware of how much energy can be saved with solar tint and it reduces fading in the home as well,” adds Terry. With a high quality product and the best variety, it is no surprise word of mouth is spreading and customers are returning making it a satisfying job for Katrina. “When they get the tint, the client gets an instant result and can feel the temperature drop, so they’re always happy,” adds Katrina. Liv

Rider

of the month

Hi Liv! Tell us a little about yourself: Exactly 2 years ago I weighed in at 136kg, had major health concerns and suffered with depression. And cycling/triathlon brought happiness back into my life. Now having lost 50kg I feel more alive than ever and have done things I thought I’d never be able to do. What kind of riding do you do? I am into triathlon which is obviously more than just cycling. However, cycling is a big part of my life as I ride to and from work. What began your passion for riding? My passion started when I completed my first triathlon, I was still carrying a little extra weight at 126kg but it didn’t take long for me to realize that the ride part was pretty amazing. I had then proceeded to purchase a road bike and I remember the days where I thought 20km was a challenge (this makes me very great full to how far I have come) Are you involved in a club in Cairns? I am currently apart of Triathlon Australia, Cairns Crocs Tri Club and Fitness Australia. What are some competitions you have participated in and where did you place? I have competed in local Triathlons and usually walk away with a placing (only because there only

IPSUM

3 people in my age group). Recently in competed in my first Cairns 70.3 Ironman, where I had a very painful experience, due to fighting of a sinus infection a month before hand I was landed with a migraine and an epic stitch. Not to be deterred I slogged on to finish the day was truly tuff but It hasn’t bruised my determination, as I am already thinking of the next race and how & I can improve. How do you prepare for a race? For a longer endurance event there is months of training involved. Leading up to race, nutrition is the key (for me) and especially on race day as you have already built up your fitness throughout the months of training. But most importantly, I feel it is important to maintain a sense of balance and my social life friends and family keeps me somewhat sane. Which helps me still stay focus for the task ahead. What do you find rewarding about the sport? The finishing line. There is nothing more rewarding than running across that finish line, it’s purely magical it doesn’t matter where you place in the race everyone who crosses that line is a winner. What advice do you give to beginners? As a Personal Trainer, studying Sports and Exercise Science I have expended my own knowledge/ experiences and there is endless advice to give.

I have quite a soft spot for beginners in cycling, triathlon or any sport really. There was a lot of information that wasn’t given to myself when I started, like butt cream for cycling, not wearing undies under your cycling nicks and other little things. So I am starting triathlon coaching purely for beginners to help with this information that tends to be forgotten about plus actual coaching in the 3 fields (Swimming, Cycling and Running) Where is your favourite place to ride in Cairns? I do love a ride out to the northern beaches and a coffee at the end. Is there anyone you’d like to thank? There is always people to thank. Starting with my dietician Mitch from Health Management – thank you for your ongoing support. My best friend Lia, she keeps me on track on when I go a little crazy. My amazing coach Kryssi from GETFIT Personal Training, from running like an elephant to a striking gazelle, pushing me thru the “ahh I’d rather do this” and also being there for support when I need. Last but not least is Pump N Pedals, from the day I walked into the shop I have felt I have been a part of the family. One of my Major sponsors ‘On Running shoes’, thanks to Bart for helping have the best shoes in town.

An

RFDS Flight Nurs e’s V iew By Caren Fievez

I

ventured to Australia in 2002, and within a year found myself nursing in an indigenous community in Far North Queensland. It was during this time I first encountered the RFDS, when I needed to evacuate an unwell patient. I will never forget sitting in the 4WD ambulance at dusk ,watching the aircraft circle high above me, and as it landed in a blur of lights and noise, thinking “I’m going to do that!” From that point on, I worked hard to get as much emergency nursing experience as I could, and applied for an RFDS midwifery scholarship in 2007, which I was lucky enough to receive. I finished my midwifery training in 2009, and have been working for the RFDS Queensland Section ever since. There is no average day in my job as an aeromedical flight nurse! Some days the on-call team may be involved in the movement of fairly routine patients between hospitals or care facilities, and

other days, we may be the first on scene for remote vehicular accidents on properties with only a dirt strip for the aircraft to land on! You can never predict the day’s events. I believe it is this ever changing environment that keeps me nursing for the RFDS. It is difficult to identify the qualities of a good flight nurse, but we all have to be flexible, knowledgeable and able to deal with constantly changing events. Only two weeks ago, the team was tasked to collect a woman in labour from a local hospital and was then redeployed mid flight to attend to a postarrest situation where a full resuscitation was in progress. My most memorable day as a flight nurse involved a motor vehicle accident in the Cape where the driver was completely entrapped in a vehicle down a fairly steep embankment … pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The rescue and transfer involved the deployment of a rescue crew

and ambulance from Weipa, as well as, assistance from station hands of the three neighbouring properties, who all helped us gain access to the car, and ultimately the trapped driver. We were at the scene for more than four hours, but worked together effectively, achieving as a team, a really good result for our patient. It was hard work, extremely tiring, but ultimately an honour to work with people who all wanted the same outcome to get the driver out safely. The best part of my job is ultimately working with like-minded individuals, who all strive to do the best job possible. The travel is pretty amazing, and seeing the sun set across the Cape from 29,000 feet is pretty awe inspiring too! I feel lucky to be a part of such an incredible organisation and to work with people who do not do this job for glory, but just for a simple thank you.

PORT

natasha kollosche Who are you and what do you do? I am a Civil Marriage Celebrant who has lived in Port Douglas for the past 21 years. How long have you been servicing the Port Douglas region for? As a Celebrant – 8 years – although I have worked in Tourism for many more, including managing Port Douglas Daintree Tourism (now known as Tourism Port Douglas Daintree) during a very challenging time with the collapse of Ansett Airlines followed by the Sept 11 Terrorist Attacks just 5 days later. What influenced your decision to become a marriage celebrant? A desire to own and operate my own business combined with a good bit of luck and timing! It turned out to be a bonus that I absolutely love the job! What is the most memorable wedding you have been involved in and why? Having officiated over 800 weddings it is hard to single out just one as there have been so many special couples. One beautiful wedding that springs to mind was an elopement ceremony in the Crystal Wedding Chapel at the Sheraton Mirage a couple of years ago…the groom was 86 years old and the bride was 83. I felt very privileged to have been asked to help them officiate their marriage as they were so in love and completely devoted to each other. What’s one tip you have for the bride and groom whilst planning their wedding? Don’t sweat the small stuff and be organised well in advance of the big day! Also, I like to emphasize the importance of the bride and the groom being equally involved in organizing their wedding wherever possible. Just as their marriage should be a team effort, so should their wedding planning. What is the most important question couples should ask when choosing their celebrant? How many weddings have you officiated? Will you meet with us prior to the wedding day? Both equally important questions in my view!

91

CairnsLife

What’s the most unusual request you have had from a bride and groom in relation to their wedding ceremony? Early on in my career I had a couple asked to be tied together with a very large rope to signify they had “tied the knot” (they needed 4 men to lift the rope!). Another time I was asked to stand beside a waterfall which I realised afterwards was a very dangerous thing to do given the slippery moss underfoot and the 100 foot plunge over the side of the falls! Who has been your favourite celebrity couple to wed? Marrying ARL Captain Cameron Smith and his beautiful wife Barbara was pretty memorable (even though my husband had to explain to me who he was in the beginning!). Helping Kerrie Ann Kennerley celebrate 25 years of marriage to her husband John would have to be another one of the highlights and AFL player Corey Enright and his wife Renee were also very down to earth...the entire Geelong Football Team was in town for their wedding and it was a very laid back affair. All of those couples have proven that you can be famous and awesomely nice at the same time. What’s your dream destination for a wedding? And if you could be a marriage celebrant for one ‘dream couple’ who would it be? Of course Port Douglas and Daintree tops the list as there are just so many different options…reef, rainforest, beach, waterfall, chapels, private holiday homes and beautiful resorts. I have been a big fan of Jonathan Thurston’s for many years so fingers crossed when he and his fiancé Sam plan to walk down the aisle, hopefully they will look me up! What can’t you live without? My husband Ross, our two Kelpies and my laptop - and of course my wardrobe of wedding clothes and shoes! Natasha was recently voted Best Wedding Celebrant for 2013 at the Douglas Business Awards

If you are self employed you could now start noticing the benefits due to you, also people with artistic flare could benefit from these vibrations. It should give you a happy and contented feeling. Romantic matters should be well aspected during this period and many moments should be had with loved ones. Do not neglect your day to day duties in this very romantic period. A period of sudden changes. Problems on the domestic scene should be attended to ads quickly as they occur. Watch those romantic urges, there could be hidden dangers. Romance should be swinging and most could be flattered by all the extra attention they are getting. Don’t be too pushy with your ideas. The peace at home is very dependant upon your actions. If you fly of the handle at the drop of a hat the situation will be very strained. Control your temper and try to understand the others point of view. Generally a very good period and some very interesting situations could develop. Most will have the energy and drive to tackle anything that might take their fancy.

Career and finances are about to move into a fortunate period. Your attitude with loved ones could cause a lot of friction. New friends may appear more exciting than old ones. However the unknown could hold a trap or two. Many could meet the love of their life or find that a recent relationship could be headed for the alter. Some could have trouble making travel plans. Curb your pleasure spending, especially if you really can’t afford it. More freedom to choose your working hours will please most. Love at first sight is likely for some. For most money could come a lot easier and some are in for a lucky windfall. However when it comes to spending, keep a clear head and your cheque book at home.

A restless period with excess energy. Most will be undergoing major changes, emotionally and career wise. Many will find romance in the least expected places. Most could expect some exciting events concerning money. Someone rather important could come to you for confidential advice. Some could join with another successful money making venture. New friends bring more excitement into your life. However there is a tendency towards tactless speech, so be careful with what you say or confide. A money making venture could bring success. Social activities could pep up your love life and bring an offer to travel. A family problem could sort itself out. The wise will keep their secrets to themselves or create a scandal.

Travel could have an unexpected twist. Many could be visiting places for the first time. Most will be full of confidence and bringing about important changes. Love relations should hot up. An opportunity to start a new job or venture will make you happier. Finances could be better than you thought, and lovers will show more appreciation. More energy could lead to most taking on more than they can handle. Domestic affairs could be taking up a lot of time. Real estate dealings could be rather profitable. If you stand up for what you believe in, people will support you. Love affairs are in for a boost and could take up a lot of your time. There is a likelihood if changes in financial commitments.

Before you bring about any changes either in your love or career affairs, plan very carefully. Most will be very busy on the social scene and very romantically inclined. Do not neglect the domestic scene or a loved one may feel that you are taking them for granted. If you are born early in the month you could be in for some luck, take the opportunity offered. Make sure you know what you want when pursuing a job. Most will be looking for a pleasure filled time rather than a working one. Travel should pay some benefit. Do not loose your temper or get involved in a stupid fir of jealousy. This will make sure that you lose a loved one. Some one you trusted will show a character you certainly didn’t expect.

Gains can come through antiques and or real estate. Loved ones should be more open about their feelings and a love related overture takes you by surprise. The chance to travel is indicated. Some unexpected element can cause confusion. Romance looks more interesting and in career affairs be ready for quick action. However not the right time to gamble on hunches. For the romantically unattached some unexpected opportunities. Much to enjoy during this period and your interests could be directed towards the arts. A recent change can now show to your advantage. If too stubborn to listen to advice it could lead to mis understandings. A conventional approach may seem boring but the moment you cannot afford to be too eccentric in your demands or actions.

Life is undergoing major changes and the wise will let it happen. Love relationships should be happier and more fulfilling and more romance at home or in quiet places Be very careful how you handle loved ones; they may not understand you and then trouble is all around you. Don’t listen to idle gossip. A Virgo Friend could help you win some money at the races. It is best to stick with the familiar things. Strangers could be causing some trouble for you. Be very positive in your outlook. Most will have to stand up for themselves and tell friends and relatives where they stand. Some could get married or have an extension to the family tree. Don’t overdo the celebrating.

Most will feel like getting out and having a go. An excellent period for legal dealings and signing contracts, etc. luck could take you by surprise. Success with a Pisces is indicated. Nervous tension can cause erratic behaviour, wiser to practice restraint and side step emotional issues. For those involved with older people a most pleasant occurance. Someone unusual is going to figure in your future. Best to check financial facts before making important decisions. In general a very pleasant period coming up for you. If you are looking for trouble in relationships, you are very likely to find it. The married could be in conflict with children during this period; but you should win so don’t worry.

A new career offer or expanding your present job is indicated. Many will be travelling and some lives could be changed as the result of a trip. Make an effort to keep lovers happy and you will be rewarded. Some problems with communications could hamper your travel plans and there might have to be cancellations for you. You could be trying to start a new venture with someone make sure you know all the ins and outs of things beforehand. You might not be the most popular kid on the block at the moment but stick to your guns if you know you are right. But use tact when confronting possible enemies it will always work in your favour. Someone might agree with you and this could cause unnecessary problems in your working life, patience could solve some of it. Any unfinished business matters should be dealt with straight away.
