Here’s to April! For those of you who’ve adopted a new year’s resolution of healthy eating I wish you lots of luck in the coming weeks. Personally I had my first Easter egg back in February thanks to the shops stocking up well in advance. In addition to Easter this month we also recognise Anzac Day which is an extremely important event for my family with generations having served and died in the Military ‘Keep on Fighting’ as they say. I hope as many of you as possible take the time to go to one of the local services as we owe the diggers so much for fighting to preserve this lucky country of ours. Our thoughts are also with the men and women still serving overseas at this time. On a lighter note, please enjoy this special edition of CairnsLife which highlights a number of Cairns businesses that can help save you money. Also featured this month are Cairns Franchises, not too mention all our regular contributors. Happy Easter, Jacqui x

99th ANZAC Day Commemorations

25th of April • Please contact your local RSL for details on local services.

This year marks the 99th anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troupes at Gallipoli. But ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.

11th of April • 9am -3pm • JCU Cairns, Smithfeild

Tropical Sustainability Matters is JCU’s annual symposium and sustainability fair – an event focusing on matters of importance to sustainability in the tropics, world-wide. The theme of the 2014 symposium and fair is “Consumerism and Waste – the War of Waste”

A POLE HOME CLASSIC

This is truly a beautifully presented, immaculate pole home with an organic yet contemporary feel. I love it. Situated on 5000m2 of gardens, in a beautiful part of Kuranda, there are gorgeous views from the entertainment deck as well as 180 degree views of rainforest and mountains from the master bedroom. Light, open, spacious and only one owner, this home has been tastefully decorated with no expense spared on quality fittings and fixtures. There are 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, open living area and space under the house for parking or work shed. The Kitchen is stylish with views out through wooden windows. It has stainless steel splash backs, gas cooking, Miele dishwasher and large pantry. The master bedroom has its’ own private balcony, walk in robe and ensuite. The additional bedrooms all have built in robes.

The main bathroom is large, spacious and beautifully tiled. The wooden vanity bench top gives the room a real ‘warmth’. A wood burning stove sits in the corner of the living room with its’ flue extending up through the master bedroom to keep warm on those chilly winter nights nice. To truly appreciate this home you must experience it, but please start by watching the video. Recognise the wooden floors, the workmanship on the stairs, the views from the balcony, the turpentine poles used as part of beauty of the construction....it’s a long list! If you love pole homes and can appreciate quality, you’ll certainly will fall in love with this one - Please call today to arrange a private inspection.

his month we have comprised our pick of top Cairns franchises. Each of these franchises are successful in their own industries and have proven passion and commitment for their brands. We bring to you Five impressive franchise owners who share with us their secrets to business by franchise.

THE

DIXON DIFFERENCE A ND R EW TH OM A S MANAGING DIRECTOR

Dixon Homes offers thousands of designs, from studio apartments through to two-storey homes with 11-bedrooms and 7-bathrooms. There’s flexibility to customise any design to fit your needs, or the convenience of a complete house and land package. The Dixon Homes difference is making the home buying and building process as simple, and enjoyable, as possible. Andrew Thomas is managing director of the Dixon Homes franchise across Cairns and Townsville. He says buying a home shouldn’t be stressful, and he and his team work hard to make sure it’s not. “It’s an honour to be able to help people through one of the most important and exciting times of their life,” he said. “We take care of all of the details and make the process as simple and fast as possible, so our buyers can enjoy their new home sooner.” Andrew and his team joined Dixon Homes in 2003. He had an established building company, but adopting the Dixon Homes brand provided access to greater buying power, and a name trusted in the industry since 1959. He said the franchise also offered the professional services of designers and marketing experts, as well as significant business support. With a background in civil engineering, drafting, estimating, computer aided design and sales,

22

The great Aussie dream of owning a home that perfectly suits you and your lifestyle could be closer than you think.

Andrew’s own well-rounded expertise has been a great asset to the growing business. “When the business was first established we had two people, operated from a home office and had minimal computerisation,” he said. “We now have 13 staff in Cairns, three in Townsville, hundreds of subcontractors, very sophisticated network systems and operate from our newly constructed showroom on Mulgrave Road.” Andrew admits there’s been some challenges along the way. The economic situation of the past few years was just one. “Staying motivated can be tough. The industry is relentless, with changes and problems on a daily basis which can be very tiring. But enjoying what you’re doing keeps you interested, and coming back for more.” Among the highlights to help drive that motivation was building the Dixon Homes office on Mulgrave Road, and the City View Villas Project – designing and constructing 84 units. But Andrew says every home they design and build, from one bedroom to 11, is as important for the Dixon Homes team. Visit www.dixonhomes.com.au for more details and to view the Dixon Homes design range and house and land packages.

Angela CAPITANIO & Therese PLATH “As successful real estate agents in our own right, we always wanted to realise the dream of owning our own real estate office together,” says Angela. “In November last year, Ray White Cairns Central celebrated being in business successfully for 20 years.” “This is a milestone we are very proud of.” Angela and Therese also own the Ray White Cairns South office, which Angela admits work together to assist buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords from Palm Cove to Gordonvale. Therese lives on the Southside which attracts many referrals to the South Office. “We have a very experienced Sales Team of 12 salespeople where the average salesperson has 18 years’ real estate experience - a great advantage to any buyer or seller.” “With the strength of two offices - Ray White Cairns Central and Ray White Cairns South, all staff, salespeople and property managers ensure they work as a cohesive team to deliver excellent service and professional knowledge in an efficient manner to clients and customers.” “We also refer clients and customers to other offices within the Ray White network and from time-to-time receive referrals from other offices

also wishing to assist their clients with buying, selling or leasing.” “To ensure all salespeople, property managers and administration staff are kept abreast of the latest real estate and legal information concerning the real estate industry, our staff is regularly sent to various training courses and seminars throughout the year which are provided by Ray White, the Real Estate Institute of Queensland and other real estate seminar events.” Angela adds extensive training and up-to-date real estate industry, legal and technology information is provided by Ray White via corporate training internet portals, real estate seminars and detailed computer systems. These resources are a valuable asset that keeps the team informed and prepared for the ever changing property needs of valued clients, particularly in residential sales. “The majority of our sales are purely residential; selling $20,000 studio units to multi-million-dollar homes, apartments and acreage properties plus vacant land and some project marketing into apartment sales.” says Angela. Asked how she defines success, Angela is open and honest.

“For me success comes from the passion, drive and commitment I have in my chosen profession.” “Because I am passionate about my business the hard work is worthwhile.” “Having the ability to listen to others, continue to learn, and a willingness to adapt to ever-changing market conditions, as well as forming long-term relationships both with clients and staff are all factors of my success.” “It is important to have a loyal and hardworking team that works together, which I have.” For Therese, it’s about the personal and individual service she offers, based on her moral and ethical beliefs, which she instils in her team. “I constantly strive to ease the stressful times as there is always emotion, excitement, adrenaline and disappointment sometimes in client’s lives in the process of selling and buying property.” “I am very proud of many achievements including my large referral base and consistently having that special feeling of having made a difference in the lives of my clients.”

DAV I D PRI CE Three and half years ago a chance encounter with a humble burger eatery in Melbourne’s Chapel Street and a clever business opportunity proved the catalyst for a move to Cairns for Grill’d franchise partner David Price. Today, David says he certainly hasn’t been disappointed; revealing the success of his restaurant has been such that he is encouraging more of the same in the Cairns area. “It’s true, I accidently walked into Grill’d in Chapel Street one day and thought to myself – I can do this,” says David wryly. “I was out with my children looking for a place where we could all eat comfortably and affordably, and spotted the restaurant.” “I was impressed with what I saw and my family and I all enjoyed the fresh and healthy Grill’d burgers.” “I was looking for an opportunity to run my own business, and decided to approach the company.” “After doing all the paperwork, and six months of intensive training, I was then waiting for a location for a new franchise to open up.” “We opened the business in September 2010 on the Cairns Esplanade with great fanfare.” “I have to admit it took some time to convince locals to come in and try what can only be described as exceptionally high quality burgers dressed with fresh and healthy ingredients.” “Now it’s an establishment that draws them in.” David candidly reflects on this achievement, confident it’s not just about the food - even though every ingredient such as fresh local produce, free range eggs,100% grass fed beef and lamb, and Meredith goats cheese make it very high standard. He says it’s also about forging a strong link in the community. “We have worked very hard in this area to support the local community on a various levels, yet one that really stands out is our relationship with high schools and students doing hospitality training, says David smiling. “My own daughter was one of the trainees that has come through Grill’d.” “To watch the students’ confidence grow as they move through the different stations in the eatery, eventually moving onto the floor to attend to customers is just amazing.” “Being a part of Grill’d has really helped me grow too!” “There’s no way I could have taken on a project like this as a sole operator before I joined the company.” “The training on the Grill’d website was particularly beneficial, enabling me to grasp components across different aspects of the business before I even stepped into the eatery.” “Key support in managing people, promoting the business and customer service has also been excellent.” “As part of the bigger picture nationally, Grill’d is focused on remaining true to its foundation and values.” “That is the Grill’d recipe for success.” Grill’d is currently looking for franchise partners in the local community. If you, or someone you know, are interested in applying go to www.grilld.com.au for more information, or alternately David is happy to speak with you directly. He can be contacted on 07 4041 4200.

COLIN & CARLI

G I L B E RT The fantastic opportunity to grow an already proven track record in customer service has seen Colin Gilbert and his wife Carli become the new Cairns Andersens Floor Covering franchisee. Colin says 20 years’ experience in the floor covering industry – a family tradition, has become a way of life that reflects his passion for building relationships with people. Well known and respected by peers in the local business community since moving to Cairns from Sydney in 1999, Colin and Carli have enjoyed the rewards of operating a small, family-run operation built on integrity and reliability. “You can have the best product and service, yet for us it’s more than that, it’s about working with our domestic and commercial clients to achieve a high level of satisfaction,” says Colin “and our high level repeat business confirms this.” When the chance came along just over a year ago to join the Andersens franchise team Colin admits he couldn’t turn it down. “I was intrigued by the Andersens’ company background and founder Jack Andersen’s commitment to company values built on honesty, integrity and respect,” says Colin. “The company’s motto reinforces this commitment dating back to its origin in the late 1950s – The Respected Name in Floor Coverings.” “Andersens has been operating in Cairns for 17 years, and already established in the community.” Colin admits the decision to join Andersens’ has meant breaking new ground for a small, family-owned business – moving into what Colin calls the ‘A-League’. “Twelve months on and I have proved to myself that being part of the Andersens’ franchise team can benefit customers on an even greater scale right across the board - from customer service to the diversity of floor covering products, window coverings, and the iDesign system.” “Carli and I are success driven, yet we didn’t realise how much we were operating in our comfort zone until we started our journey with Andersens,” laughs Colin. “The big test for us has been relocating the business into its new state-of-the-art showroom on McCormack Street.” “We also have the iDesign application which is exclusive to Andersens and helps customers to visualise the range of products in a virtual application to assist with making the right selection.” “Our ‘showroom on wheels’ is one of the best in the business and it’s taken to a new level with iDesign, allowing me to take a picture of a room and show a client just what any product will look like in that area. Customers can touch and now see how their chosen product will look.” “I have always enjoyed the opportunity to get out and talk with people on site, and the mobile showroom certainly facilitates that.” “We are also working on bringing attention to the company’s window covering sector. Many people aren’t aware Andersens has a range of blinds ideal for any décor or budget.” “The comprehensive window display in the showroom has been dedicated to this and looks great!” “It’s this new technology, combined with high quality products at competitive prices, and the generous support from the company that makes Andersens a fantastic company to do business with.” “The Andersens experience emphasises the fact that we continue to think about the floor buying experience from a customer perspective and fully address the areas of product quality, customer service and convenience.”

PHIL & CHARMAINE

M A T T H E W S The ability to turn a dream into a thriving business starts with setting a goal and working towards achieving it with a reverent desire for success, according to Director of Austart Homes Phil Matthews. With 40 years experience in the residential home building industry, and the continuing growth of the Austart Homes franchises, Phil walks the talk when it comes to knowing what works, and what simply doesn’t! Phil’s dream began at the age of five in Victoria. “I feel in love with watching houses being built,” says Phil. “My dad was a truck driver, Mum was at home, and we lived in a housing commission area,” he says, admitting he didn’t get an easy ride to success. At the age of 15 Phil accepted a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship. At 18, having finished his apprenticeship he began working in Melbourne taking on a number of various carpentry jobs. Three years later Phil began taking on building contracts. By the time he was 24 he had a team of 30 carpenters working for him. This experience opened the door for what would eventually become Austart Homes. “I am a man of systems and procedures,” says Phil. “I also believe if you can think positive, and don’t allow yourself to be afraid, you can do what you set out to do!” Phil then started tendering government contracts in Sydney. At 38 he was turning over $6 million a year in contracts, yet he had a vision to start his own building company. Phil moved to Brisbane with the goal of establishing a home building company that would be one of the top 10 in Queensland in five years. His vision realised, Newstart Homes won an accolade for the fastest growing home building company in Australia in 1994. Yet the boy from Victoria would soon discover another passion – his love for North Queensland. Moving to Port Douglas and commuting to Brisbane to run the company was taking its toll on Phil. So when a large company approached him to purchase Newstart Homes he agreed. “With Newstart Homes established in South East Queensland, my wife Charmaine and I saw the potential for developing a franchise for building residential homes in North Queensland,” says Phil. In 2002 Austart Homes was launched. Today, Phil says he gets a lot of enjoyment from owning and operating a business that enables him to share his experience. “I enjoy mentoring young tradespeople who want to be successful home builders through a franchise opportunity that provides them with systems and procedures that work!” “The success of Austart Homes, particularly in the Cairns region is testament to our commitment to provide a quality product and excellent customer service.” “Forty years ago you didn’t even have to have a builders licence.” “Twenty years ago building homes was less demanding.” “Today the entire process, from the design stage to the completed project - including estimates, computer software and operating systems, and customer service all require careful attention. “That’s why the support Austart Homes provides franchisees with is invaluable.”

rom the rich feel of “rayon (Cairns Life March 2014 edition) which is now hopefully in your wardrobe, to Cotton - the no-brainer fabric that is always a pleasure to wear in the tropics. Annie’s stocks a large variety of cotton dresses, top and more, all year round. Cotton is used in everything from personal hygiene products to hospital blankets. The fibres are highly porous, so they naturally wick away moisture while retaining breathability. Cotton can be woven into any density, has some natural give and dyes easily, making it a popular choice for designers. If you sew your own garments, prewashing cotton before you cut out your pattern is a must. Cotton fabric is available in a multitude of looks, feels and a myriad of different cotton types which include:- denim( the fabric of jeans); the lustrous and dressy cotton sateen; rich velvet, the kitsch seersucker and my personal favourite - the light and chic cotton voile.

My Uncle Sno, a farmer from St George (Qld) knows & grows cotton - from spring planting to harvesting the fluffy cotton “fruit” off 1 metre high bushes.’ I remember being fascinated by Uncle Sno’s machines called Cotton Pickers and the noisy Cotton Gin, (the factory that gathers and compresses these fluffy fibres into huge modules or bales in preparation for transporting to its overseas destination.) Most Australian cotton is exported to China and Korea, which may find its way back here as many forms, including rolls of woven cloth or pre-made clothing some Australian designed. Elle Macpherson appreciates the cleverness of cotton, incorporating this fabric into her underwear and sleepwear range. Using cotton or cotton blends with pretty trims, a woman can look sexy and feel cool and comfy. Cotton is soft and pleasing to touch and as it is derived naturally, those with sensitive skin are able to wear this fibre without enduring any adverse reactions. Earlier I mentioned the “crazy named” seersucker which means “rice pudding” and relates to its ‘bubbled’ texture. This fascinating cotton is woven in a manner that produces bunched threads, causing the fabric to rise off the skin therefore improving its circulation and breathability & never needing an iron. Try slipping on a seersucker robe after a shower and you will appreciate the “as light as air” feel of cotton bubbles on your skin. Seersucker is also the ideal “everyday” tablecloth fabric. I wonder if Seersucker dresses will be on

trend again anytime soon? Expect “some” cotton garments to run on their first wash but by using a few tips when washing new cotton, you may save time and effort with future care. The first wash may soften the garment as it removes excess thick surface dye. Using a bucket, I add a gentle detergent and 2 dessert spoons of vinegar to cold water, then thoroughly hand wash the garment. (don’t soak) Replace the wash water w clean cold ‘vinegar water” and rinse well. Wring out excess water by hand, (or machine spin separately) before shaking garment out, placing it on a plastic hanger and letting it dry in the shade. ‘Tickle’ any trims to ensure they fall correctly whilst drying. This method can often avoid ironing and future washes are usually done in the washing machine, depending on the care label. Placing each garment is a delicates bag, if machine washing, is an added bonus.

KOKODA

IMAGING TAKING PART IN A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE, OFFERING NOT ONLY FRIENDSHIP, HISTORY, AND ADVENTURE BUT ALSO ONE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE SENSES OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS? THE ANNUAL CAIRNS CORPORATE CHALLENGE IS BACK AND WITH A HUGE FUNDRAISING TARGET OF $100,000 IT IS NOW CALLING FOR REGISTRATIONS FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN TAKING PART IN ITS KOKODA TREK.

T

he 13-day trek, organised by Getaway Trekking & Adventures (GTA) on a non-profit basis, will take place from August 23 to September 4 raising much-needed funds for the $9 million COUCH Health and Wellness Centre, which began construction in July last year. GTA principal Sue Fitcher describes the Kokoda experience as completely life changing, offering participants the opportunity to take part in an unforgettable experience while at the same time raising money for the much needed wellness centre in Cairns. “Walking Kokoda is an incredible experience and one that will come alive and touch those who participate deeply,” she goes on to explain. “When you trek Kokoda, you’re participating in an experience of discovery – you are an explorer, historian and adventurer, truly living and participating in an historic and monumental Kokoda adventure.” Each trekker will be required to fundraise a minimum of $2600 on top of the trek cost of $3595. “We have a huge fundraising goal of $100,000, topping last year’s efforts of $85,000 for the Declan Crouch Fund. $2500 will be given directly to COUCH and the remaining $100 donated to the Kokoda Track Foundation to cover the annual salary of a community health worker at the Buna Aid Post.” Cairns Corporate Challenge committee spokesperson Deb Hancock is urging anyone who had ever considered taking on Kokoda to be apart of this great event. “This is a real opportunity for trekkers to get involved with their local community and to

contribute to something that really matters. “There is no doubt the Kokoda trek will be a tough daily mental and physical battle for the Corporate Challenge participants, but it does pale in comparison to the battle that cancer sufferers and their families have to deal with on a daily basis. GTA has extensive experience in leading treks across the Kokoda Track, and has been operating for more than 15 years so we are in good hands,” she adds. Trekkers will need to purpose train to make sure they are in peak physical fitness before embarking on the 96-kilometre trek and GTA will provide regular training sessions leading up to the event for all trekkers to ensure they are physically prepared for the challenge. This year there will be two Kokoda treks on offer as part of the Cairns Corporate Challenge, both running at the same time. Those who have never trekked Kokoda before will do the Kokoda Ultimate Trek and those who have done it before can join the Kokoda Legends Trek. At the end of the trek, the group will travel to the northern beaches of Oro Province, where they will learn more about the history of the Kokoda Campaign, and experience the beauty of the PNG culture. “This is such a fitting way to end the trek and one that will create truly lasting memories for participants,” Sue concludes. To register contact Sue Fitcher on 07 4057 8488 / 0418 294 888 or email sue@getawaytrekking.com. For more information, visit www. cairnscorporatechallenge.com.au.

Autumn is a great time to rejuvenate a garden for the new season and for next spring.

The tips below are an autumn garden task list that will keep your garden flourishing.

• Autumn is the time to make new plants from cuttings. Take 10cm cuttings from hardwood herbs such as rosemary and bay or natives such as banksias, grevillea and coastal rosemary. Remove the lower leaves, dip cuttings into hormone powder and pot in small containers of premium potting mix. Keep just moist and shelter from strong wind and sun. • Trim hedges before the onset of winter to keep them compact and bushy from ground level. • Gather fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps and shredded prunings, and layer them in a compost bin. Turn periodically with a garden fork to allow air to circulate and feed organisms, and

decompose the organic matter quickly. • • • Don‘t overload your compost with one particular ingredient – maintain a mix. See the new Aerobin at garden centres; it makes excellent compost. • Don’t try to cultivate soil beneath large trees; you will only damage the roots. Make planting holes between the roots instead and insert small plants with tiny root systems that establish themselves readily. Bromeliads thrive under trees. • An old ladder makes a good support for climbing vines such as sweet peas. A splash of paint will give it extra impact in the garden or up against a wall. • Transfer the leaves that fall on your

garden and lawn to the compost bin on a regular basis, otherwise they will smother your plants and grass. • Don’t rush to prune spent seed heads. They provide a wealth of food for birds that visit the garden. Magnolia fruit attract parrots who feast on their seeds. • Autumn is rose season, and they look gorgeous at this time of year. Choose the ones you love and order them from your local nursery. • Start a tradition by planting poppies to commemorate ANZAC day. For more information head to www.homelife.com.au

your new home. Whether you are building on a strict budget or larger budget for upgrading to a long term family home, when you build a new home not only do you get a home that is tailored to your family’s individual needs, it can have modern and the most up to date fittings, and you have a home that will need a minimum of maintenance for many years. Building a home gives you the option to choose the location, the design, the inclusions and level of finish. You get to personalise your home with colour schemes and a design that compliments the land’s best features and it’s suited to your family’s needs and tastes. I advise clients to do some homework themselves and see if what they are looking to build will fit into the suburb and location and that the home will always have a good resale value in the future. You can do this by comparing

prices for existing homes for sale in the suburb. Once you’ve decided on which block of land to purchase consider the layout and design of your new home, as this is extremely important. It can make the difference for you being excited to come home each day and enjoying the lifestyle your new home offers. A good energy efficient design can save you dollars whereas a home that doesn’t take into account our tropical climate can increase your home’s running costs and add to the amount of maintenance needed over the years and ultimately the selling price of your home in the future. A knowledgeable and experienced builder will be able to work within your budget to give you numerous options for your new home in designs and inclusions. They can guide you to the most suitable products and should be

his couple’s deep reverence for the art and history of North Africa’s Moroccan culture and artefacts has culminated in the extraordinary Lantaka boutique gallery-style collection – the first of its kind in the Cairns region. “Nigel and I were looking for a way to share our interest in Moroccan ethnic and tribal art and jewellery, beautiful textiles, home wares and furniture pieces, and the unique objects we have been able to source on our travels,” says Summer. “I also saw a gap in the market for artistic pieces not readily available in our area that would be more than collector’s items – statement articles that would add interest and value to a home.” “Late November last year we opened the doors to Lantaka in Stratford Parade.” It was so exciting to see our collection come together under one roof.” “Pride of place has been given to a small Lantaka swivel cannon sitting on the counter - the inspiration for the name of the business.” “The cannon also symbolises our vision for our clients – aiming for beautiful living.” “For example, our outdoor living here is predominately bright and colourful, and our rustic wood pieces blend so beautifully in this concept, carrying across beautifully with the Asian influence in furniture we see so often in our region.” “Lanterns are also popular, and the Moroccan design creates a rich ambience in lighting inside the home or out.” “You really don’t need a lot of pieces to create a theme - just one singular piece in the right spot can add so much style to a room.” “Colour and contrast can be achieved with textured textiles and 40

There are many antique and ethnic pieces of jewellery to choose from.” “In the near future, we will be launching our own jewellery range, pieces which incorporate precious gems from India with antique beads and coins – signature pieces designed by Nigel, who has a Bachelor of Arts in Jewellery Design and Silversmithing.” Summer understands the immense value and meaning of a treasured item, which is why she and Nigel are focused on handpicked objects that display attention to detail and fine craftsmanship. “I have two Moroccan rugs in my home that I could never part with, bought on my travels 11 years ago,” she says. “Each one has a tribal story woven into them, which makes them priceless to me.” “Our desire in opening this business is to share our passion for objects to adorn and adore, and bring to the marketplace quality pieces clients can enjoy for a lifetime.” “We invite locals and visitors alike to come in, browse and immerse themselves in the Lantaka experience, or visit our website www.lantaka. com.au .” 3/39 Stratford Parade Stratford, Cairns Queensland 4870 07 4058 2735

Camping

in the Rain.

It is inevitable, if you go camping, eventually at some point you will be camping in the rain. You can choose to be wet and miserable, or you can accept that camping in the rain is a part of camping and can be a wonderful experience. Now it is not something that anyone would want to happen on every camping trip but it is always best to be prepared for it, just in case. Even if inclement weather isn’t in the forecast for your trip, most campers know that rain showers can pop up at any minute—especially during the wet season of Northern Queensland. So you don’t get caught off guard here are two ideas to keep you warm and dry when you are camping in the rain. Idea One: Bring a Lot of Plastic Bags The wonderful things about plastic bags of all sizes—trash bags, sealing sandwich bags and so forth—are that

they keep water out just as effectively as higher end dry bags. They take up virtually no room in your pack and cost next to nothing. You can’t reuse them like you can the brand name camping dry bags, but for a single trip, cheap plastic bags are a saving grace if you end up camping in the rain. Always carry a trash bag to cover your hiking pack at night, and one to store dry firewood. Sealable plastic bags will protect smaller items like digital camera memory cards, matches and important papers like fishing licenses, money and passport

Idea Two: Newspaper Comes in Handy Take along a little newspaper and keep it dry. This can be highly beneficial if it rains for several reasons. In addition to possibly providing some reading if you have to pass the rainy time hunkered down in a tent, it also serves as a useful fire starter if the rest of the forest is waterlogged. Also, stick a few rolled-up clumps of newspaper into your shoes at night. This will speed up the drying process by sucking moisture out of the shoe leather like a sponge. Happy Camping.

MURPHY I’m 20 years old and originally from Townsville. I moved to Cairns when I was 6 years old and have been living here ever since.

What made you start playing soccer? My dad ( Dave Murphy who is a referee in the local junior comp) and his brother both played soccer, so it was only a matter of time before my brother Matt and I started to play. Before the heat, what local clubs were you a part of? I played all my junior soccer for the Leichardt Lions, I also played two seasons for their senior team in the local premier league. I then moved back to Townsville where I commenced playing for MA Olympic in the premier league before joining the now defunct NQ Razorbacks in the Qld State League. I am now currently in my second season with the Aquis FNQ Heat. Why do you like playing for the Aquis FNQ Heat? Playing for the Heat gives me the opportunity to test myself against the best semi professional players in the state. Where do you see your soccer career going? My goal is to play professionally. I feel by putting in the hard yards and playing in the NPL, it will get me to where I need to be.

proudly sponsored by

Apart from playing soccer, what else do you get up to in your spare time? I usually just hang out with my mates. Playing for the Heat takes up a lot of my time, so I just like to take it easy. How do you think your club differs from others around the state? I think we have some of the best supporters in the NPL. Win or lose we seem to get great crowd numbers at Barlow Park. Cairns is such a close local community and we have lots of people wanting us to succeed. What advice would you give to aspiring young soccer players? Be patient. Work hard and always demand more from yourself. Who is your soccer mentor? I’d have to say my dad. He really loves his soccer and apart from myself, he is my biggest critic. There is also Leo Ward and John Bomben, both who are willing to take the extra mile to help me with advice both on and off the pitch.

T

he team at Willmot Smash Repair Specialist might be small, but they have big goals, a long history and a proven record of quality service. With more than 100 years’ experience between them, the team of 10 upholds the values Allan Willmot started the business with almost 40 years ago. Willmot’s has remained a leader in the ever-changing industry well into the 21st Century by investing in the latest equipment, technology and training. The state-of-the-art smash repair facility has also been recognised with multiple environment and sustainability awards for its ecofriendly practices. “Cairns’ beauty inspired me to operate my business with over above environmental standards,” Allan said. “It will benefit the business financially in the long run, and it makes for a better work environment.” Among the staff grateful for the green workplace is Mick Curtin, who has been with the company since joining as an apprentice panel beater in 1983. That was only six years after Allan moved to Cairns from Brisbane and started repairing vehicles in a small shed on Palm Avenue. In 1984, he installed the first compliant spray booth in Cairns, along with the first Dataliner Laser Chassis Measuring and Straightening machine, earning him the RACQ Selected Repairer contract. This quality assurance allowed the business to further expand, and in 1997 Willmot’s opened a new shed on Newell Street

47

dedicated to smash repairs and administration, while the old site was converted into a state of the art spray painting facility. Today Willmot Smash Repair Specialist is a recommended and approved repairer for RACQ , AAMI, Suncorp, Lexus and Audi, and can also assist private customers with body repairs and paint work. Allan’s daughter Helena oversees the business as general manager, and says all of the staff understand the stress and emotion of having a damaged vehicle, and work quickly to get customers back on the road as soon as possible. “Our three trade qualified staff each average seven years’ service with us, our two apprentices are moving along as fast as the industry and we are looking forward to seeing our spray painter become trade qualified this year too,” she said. “We are a small dynamic team and set our goals high to reflect the standard of our shop and the expectations of the industry and our valued customers.” For a quote or to meet the team visit the Willmot repair shop at 160 Newell Street, Bungalow. Mission Statement “With a strong customer focus, work together effectively as a team to ensure efficiency, professionalism and high quality standards are achieved to evolve with an ever changing industry while operating with the best environmental practices available.

start on Wednesday 23 April and finish at the cenotaph at 8am on ANZAC Day.

In an inspiring effort, four Cairns men who have paraplegia are joining forces to raise funds for Soldier On; a charity organisation dedicated to supporting our physically and psychologically wounded. In honour of those who’ve paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan, they will push their wheelchairs around Barlow Park for 40 hours over the ANZAC weekend - with every hour dedicated to a soldier who lost their life. “The motivation is simple – we will always have their backs. It’s about giving those who have served our country the dignity they deserve and the chance to do and be whatever they choose by providing access to inspirational activities, supporting rehabilitation and providing opportunities that empower

individuals.” Although they share a common purpose the men’s stories are all unique. Ian, a former Naval Warrant Officer was injured in 2004 when deployed as Executive Officer HMAS TARAKAN during Op RAMSI in the Solomon Is, leaving him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. In 2003 at the age of 18 Andrew was struck by an excavator bucket during a workplace accident, leaving him with complete T6/7 paraplegia. Ben was left a paraplegic from the 4th Thoracic vertebrae after a motorbike accident in

2002. And finally, Bob fell through a ceiling in a workplace accident in 2009, and woke up in hospital to find he would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Despite their own challenges, all four men recognise and remember those who have protected our country and are committed to raising funds for Soldier On. nfortunately not all dogs in our domestic environment are securely contained, sufficiently exercised and correctly socialised. Every day people and their beloved companions are either confronted or attacked by dogs that are roaming freely or are in the company of owners who have no control of their animal. How should we react when we are threatened or under attack from a strange dog? What is the best thing to do if our dog is involved in a fight with another canine? There is nothing more terrifying than being ambushed by an aggressive dog. Never try to run from the dog, avoid direct eye contact, lower your head and keep your arms close to your body. Verbal intervention such as yelling and screaming will escalate the dog’s behaviour, so remain calm. In a lot of cases the dog will lose interest and move away, which then allows for a slow retreat from the area. In extreme cases you may follow all of the guidelines and the dog may still inflict a

bite. Try to protect your face and chest and if knocked to the ground, roll in a ball to avoid injury to vulnerable areas of the body. Dog fights are extremely distressing and may result in serious injuries to the animals involved. Many people are bitten trying to protect their companion, when the attacking dog then redirects its aggression. It is recommended we avoid intervention in a canine fight however in defence of our own dog or a helpless victim it is hard to retreat. There are many things that may break up the fight such as throwing water or using a hose. In some cases grabbing the tails and lifting the hind legs off the ground may also disengage the attack. Safety is important and if you are unable to break up a dog fight it is sometimes better to move away. I have been involved in school based education over the years and it is important that children also learn the basic skills of dog safety. Knowing how to respond in a dangerous situation may ensure they avoid serious injury to themselves or their dog.

Your Wealth Lonsdale in Cairns is a local professional services firm owned and operated by Dr Chris White and Angelo Veschetti. Chris has been in professional practice in Cairns for over 30 years including being a financial planner since 1986. Angelo, a Mareeba boy, moved his family to Cairns in 2009 after a 15 year Army career and 5 years as a financial planner in Melbourne. We have the “big city” training and expertise for which many locals continue to search down south, when it is right here in Far North Queensland.

Here are some tips to help you Create, Care for, and Conserve wealth in 2014 and beyond. Create more time Outsourcing is a must for the busy. One service our clients prize is our paperwork management service. The reams of paperwork associated with your investments, superannuation and insurance are redirected to us to manage. We will involve you as required, file what you need and deliver it to your accountant. Could you use an extra 50 hours a year? Care for your family Use your super to ‘afford’ insurance. It can make sense to use superannuation funds that are locked away until age 65 to buy insurance when your cashflow is strapped, especially if it means you are no longer un or under insured. Every client we manage has more than enough superannuation to buy insurance to at least payout their debt on death or disablement, which will provide some stability for their family.

Conserve your wealth Gift your children their insurance premiums. Paying for their life and disablement insurance is a great gift with tremendous benefits – financial flexibility and the certainty that your retirement nest egg and lifestyle remain intact if something goes wrong for them, be they married with children or still single. Being able to help at these times will provide great mental value. There are some talented professionals in the Cairns region and we are honoured to be sharing these pages with some of them. This information is of general nature only and is not intended as a personal advice. It does not take into account your particular objectives, situation and needs. Before making a financial decision you should assess whether the advice is appropriate to your individual investment objectives, financial situation and particular needs. When going through the process the first thing to ask is: Do you need to wealth create? YES. If you want to achieve financial security then YES. Ok, then what is financial security? According to the AFSA retirement standard, a couple will require $57,665 per year to live comfortably when they retire in 2014. The invested amount to provide this income over their life time is in the range of $1.1m (if want to leave an inheritance) to $768,000 (if plans to spend it all); note this does not take into consideration aged pension. However, for a couple 15 years from retirement that income requirement will be the equivalent of $89,840 per year in 2029. And the lump sum required will be in the range of $1.7m to $1.2m. What to buy - PROPERTY or SHARES Answer – buy them all? But get advice from an IFA Financial Planner. Who needs advice? Those who are not selfdirected or those unsure / untested as an investor. Those who don’t have the time or interest or those who just want to know where to start. Then seek advice.

Creating wealth and investing, what a great BBQ discussion! Everyone has an opinion, a success story and a tragic story. Some people have had great success with property and some have only ever had heartache, with ‘tenants from hell’ or excess debt at the wrong time. Some love the share market and others think it’s like going to the TAB. Others are frozen, not knowing what to do.

Here are three tips to get you started: 1 The 3 biggest killers to any investment or wealth plan over time are: inflation / too much debt that can’t be supported / poor quality assets (high risk and no diversification). 2 Understanding what your goal is and when you want to achieve it, often determines the most appropriate investment and structure for your circumstance. Get advice! 3 Pros and Cons: (note this is very general and many other risks may apply to specific assets. Please seek advice).

Evaluating the opportunities So, you’re thinking about solar…?

Find out more With the ever-increasing price of electricity and extra business charges, the case for solar power is overwhelming for many businesses. Is it right for you? Talk to us today to find out. 07 40574427

07 4057 4427

A supply of energy, produced cheaply and cleanly from the sun! It’s not hard to see why solar power is so popular. Better still, it makes excellent business sense for many companies. With rising energy prices, decreasing product costs and generous government incentives, the switch will save your business money. Often, commercial businesses have most to gain from solar power, especially if they use a lot of electrical appliances during daylight hours. A great financial opportunity exists for businesses that make the switch. Running the numbers To see if solar adds up for your business, NSE provides a comprehensive estimate of the expected return on your investment, based on an assessment of your power levels and hours of operation. This will help

0420 312 413

Switching to a solar power system isn’t a decision to take lightly, but could deliver immediate and lasting benefits. At Northern Sky Electrical (NSE), we’ll give you the expert guidance you need to make an informed choice about solar for your business. And the same rule apply for domestic solar too!

you decide if solar is a viable option to be explored. In our experience, a typical small or medium-sized business operating from 9 – 5, will use the majority of electricity supplied from their solar system when sized correctly. Optimising your solar system We can also assess the optimum size solar system for your business, which will help you calculate your payback period. We do this by monitoring your power usage, determining when and at what levels you draw the most power. This gives us a detailed understanding of your system requirements. Making a difference Of course, the value of solar goes beyond just dollars and cents, with your business playing an important role in improving your local community, and being environmentally and socially responsible. Though they’re harder to quantify, these social issues may also play a part in your decision. Using high quality products At NSE, we only install high-quality, reliable systems from world leaders in solar panel technology. We use

premium Q-CELL panels and SMA inverters, for instance, which offer improved performance thanks to better quality silicon and superior manufacturing. All our products have been tested and ranked, and come with warranties for your peace of mind. Choosing an accredited installer Our installers are fully accredited by the Clean Energy Council, which gives them access to continuous professional development and technical support. That means you can expect the very best possible standard of solar PV installations. Financing your solar system Due to competitive finance deals, some businesses can now switch to solar with no initial capital outlay and a positively geared investment from day one. In some cases, loan repayments are less than the savings made by switching to solar. There are potential tax benefits too. Leasing can be a tax-effective way to invest and depreciation on your new equipment purchase will also deliver tax savings.

OPTIMUS1 There is an old saying that states: If you shop ‘on price alone’ you will ultimately ‘only get what you pay for’. This especially holds true in the insurance industry, where obtaining advice from your local insurance broker and being better informed about The professional team at Optimus 1 comprises the following five dedicated experts: Directors and Owners - Leo Conlon, Terry Hampton and Barry Koch • Account Manager - Trennt Cooper • Claims Manager/Administration - Lisa Tregea

your insurance policies could save you thousands in the long run. With premiums in the North skyrocketing over the past few years, the brokers at ‘Optimus 1’ believe (now, more than ever) people must be aware of what their policies cover. The last thing anyone wants to find out when it comes time to claim, is that the policy they chose ‘on price alone’ doesn’t cover the risk they intended it to. There are too many stories of people who have strived to save a few dollars on their insurance premium only to find it costs them thousands at the time when they need it most, simply because the coverage was inadequate or worse, non-existent. The main focus of Optimus1 has always been those in the business world but anyone who has assets or wealth to protect can benefit from our services. One of the most important assets for any business is the cash-flow. One way to protect the income is Business Interruption Insurance. It can be the

difference between the business continuing after a major loss or having to close the doors, never to reopen. Unfortunately Business Interruption Insurance is often overlooked in preference to paying a lower premium. Our team focuses on providing a more personal and friendly service which a larger firm may not have the ability to offer. Engaging our services is as easy as picking up the phone and having a chat or dropping by our office at 258 Mulgrave Road, Westcourt. Give us a call on 07 4041 5611 and find out how we can help. There is no charge for the initial contact.

Thinking Insurance: • Focus on Value. Not on price. Price is only an issue in the absence of Value. • Ask questions. Get advice and be informed about the policy you choose. It’s too late after the claim to find out that you weren’t covered for the loss. • Remember that ‘it can happen to you’. Insurance could be the saviour of ‘what happens next’.

a satisfying and healthy

Relationship

When psychologists look for qualities of a positive intimate relationship they may ask about relationship satisfaction, the amount of positive interactions, how conflict is resolved and how each of the couple meets the others needs. Relationships have ‘emotional bank accounts’, you need to make more deposits than withdrawals or you will soon be overdrawn or broke. If your emotional bank account is full, conflict and life-stressors are likely to have less impact, conversely if the account balance is low, every argument is a potential break up!

A satisfying and healthy relationship has physical and emotional health benefits so it makes sense to invest in building or maintaining a healthy relationship. Here are just a few tips to increase your relationship emotional bank balance.

1. Ask yourself “What kind of partner do I want to be, how do I want to act”? Make a commitment to start acting in ways that make your relationship healthier – and start doing it today. 2. Be decent - Identify and change unhealthy habits. Let go of blaming, swearing, name calling, criticising, defensiveness, contempt, stonewalling and resentment. 3. Recognise disagreements are inevitable Take a win/win position. Treat conflict as an opportunity to improve the relationship by moving away from the “I’m right, you’re wrong” position. Maintain reciprocal, fair and respectful communication. 4. Focus on the behaviour not the person – “I’d like the kitchen cleaned up after you’ve made lunch so the flies don’t come in” is a lot better than “You’re a pig”! 5. Be aware of the shoulds - you think “he/she should be/act/think like me” 6. Communicate your needs respectfully, be

willing to listen - No two people think the same, so remember, your partner can’t read your mind. 7. Practice acceptance (of differences, of different points of view, of different ways of thinking). 8. Be willing to put past issues and disagreements behind you and move forward. Learn to seek and offer forgiveness. 9. Don’t take out your problems on your partner. If you are under a lot of stress it’s easy to become snappy with your partner. 10. Spend time together, be playful, have fun. Have date nights. Be interested in your partner. Be willing to put time and energy into the relationship, it will pay dividends. Will we get it right all the time? Not a chance, after all we’re human. What’s important is to learn relationship repair skills. When we inevitably do lapse into relationship destroying habits, apologise and recommit to healthy habits.

Rugby World Cup

2015

The stirring strains of ‘Jerusalem’ will ring out proudly across the Twickenham terraces when hosts England kick off the Tournament on September 18, marking the start of one of the world’s toughest sporting competitions. 20 international teams will go head to head in 13 venues across England and Wales, with several of Rugby’s genuine heavyweights eyeing off the chance to claim the coveted Webb Ellis Cup. Rugby World Cup 2015’s central hub is England’s cosmopolitan capital London. A buzzing metropolis of more than eight million residents, it’s no surprise the city will play host to no less than 17 of the Tournament’s 48 fixtures – including the feverishly anticipated Rugby World Cup Final on October 31. Twickenham will host the bulk of the matches, while a reconfigured Olympic Stadium and the new Wembley Stadium will also welcome Rugby World Cup fixtures onto their multipurpose turf. London may hog the limelight, but there’s plenty more to see outside the capital’s confines. From the compact Sandy Park in Exeter to the revamped City of Manchester Stadium and multiple venues across the English Midlands, a trip to the Tournament ensures Rugby fans can explore plenty of British countryside. Even the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff will host matches, adding a further edge to an age-old Rugby rivalry between England and Wales. Never a team to back down from a challenge, Australia has the unenviable task of trying to come between England and Wales in one of the toughest pool-stage draws imaginable. All three teams will fight it out for one of two knock-out stage spots, with a qualifier from Oceania and a repechage playoff winner rounding out the pool. Both Twickenham and the Millennium Stadium will be rocking when the respective co-hosts run out in front of their own fans, making Australia’s attempt to secure a quarter-final berth all the more difficult. Defending champions New Zealand can breathe

set to electrify England & Wales The eyes of the sporting world will be on England and Wales in September and October 2015, when the eighth instalment of Rugby World Cup rumbles across the British countryside. The Tournament kicks off at Twickenham in late September and concludes six actionpacked weeks later, and Rugby fans can catch all the action thanks to Travel Associates’ extensive range of ticket-and-travel packages.

a little easier after drawing South American heavyweights Argentina and regional rivals Tonga in its pool, as well as yet-to-be-determined qualifiers from Africa and Europe. With the two-time Rugby World Cup winners set to run out for its opener against Argentina at Wembley Stadium, there’ll be plenty of London-based Kiwi expatriates flying the Silver Fern flag in the stands. The geographical spread of matches ensures visitors to Rugby World Cup 2015 can enjoy a wide variety of British hospitality. While most major cities will host fixtures – including Birmingham, Leeds and Newcastle upon Tyne – so too will some of England’s lesser-known tourist towns. They include the picturesque cathedral city of Gloucester near the Welsh border, Rugby heartland Leicester and Exeter down in deepest, distant Devon. There’s no reason to miss a minute of the action thanks to Travel Associates’ official travel-andticket bundles, which combine airfares and accommodation with exclusive match-day tickets and eliminate the hassle of organising your own tour. The only thing you’ll need to worry about is warming your vocal cords, as one of the world’s premier sporting events returns to the northern hemisphere to showcase the ultimate in international Rugby. HOW TO CHOOSE A

Family Lawyer When many law firms offer family law, how do you pick the best lawyer for you? Susan Thomson of Ethica Law Co. gives an insider’s perspective. Dedicated family lawyer. It’s a mistake to think all lawyers do the same work. The law is vast and complex, and lawyers cannot safely practice in all areas. Family Law is a discrete area with its own legislation, Courts and procedures dealing with the critical financial and parenting issues of relationship breakdown. The Family Law Act is regularly reviewed and amended, and what was right may now be wrong. So find a lawyer with a substantial proportion of their practice in family law. Avoid dabblers, those breaking into the area (using you for experience perhaps), or those who have not worked in it for some time. Experience counts. Preferably your family lawyer will have at least 5 years post admission experience (PAE), but if more junior, should be supervised by a senior lawyer. A supervising lawyer will have significant influence in the conduct of a case, so ask about their family law experience, how much involvement they will have, and at what cost. The right experience counts even more. There are myriad types of business, property and family issues to resolve at relationship breakdown, with varying complexity, so seek a lawyer experienced in the particular issues you face. Not all have dealt with, for example, dividing up inter-generational farming

properties or overseas abduction of children. If your plan is to avoid Court, find a lawyer who is a problem solver, can think outside the box, and is trained in Collaborative Law or other dispute resolution. If your case looks set for Court, check on the lawyer’s Court room experience. Surprising to some, not all lawyers get to Court. Check if your lawyer is familiar with the style and idiosyncrasies of judges likely to preside over your case, and how they have decided similar cases. Accredited Specialist are, well … specialists. You will generally tick all the boxes by engaging a Family Law Accredited Specialist. Specialists enjoy formal recognition by Queensland Law Society, and nationally, as having a high level of competency and knowledge. The path to specialist accreditation is arduous, and not all contenders pass the rigorous assessment process, so you can be confident that the qualification was earned. Next edition, Susan outlines what to look for in a family lawyer’s personal and work style - objectivity and a cool head may trump aggressive posturing. And later, Susan addresses the thorny issue of legal costs, saying lowest hourly rates may not be the cheapest in the long run, and challenging time costing altogether easiest for lawyers but is it best for clients?

C ON TRIBUTORS

at The Yoga School

T

he feeling of accomplishment and self-worth are just some of the many great emotions I have felt after completing my first yoga lessons at The Yoga School. This month, the team at The Yoga School kindly gave me the opportunity to experience their well-known service first hand. Thrilled by the opportunity, I was excited yet unsure of what to expect. After simply just talking to co-owner James, I could see and feel his passion for Yoga. Upon my first class I was greeted and welcomed like noother ‘group exercise’ class I had ever attended. A feeling of calm and happiness soon brushed over me as the class began. There were about 25 people in my class, yet our instructor Nicky made the experience so personal that it felt

like a private lesson. Upon completion of my first class I can truly say I felt renewed. And for those of you who think that Yoga is not a workout, you are wrong! After years of competitive dancing and cheerleading Yoga is just as hard, if not harder! Overall their knowledge and passion really made my experience like no other yoga class I have ever attended. I will continue to go The Yoga School and continue to rave about my experience as I do believe it has helped me manage stress and anxiety and overall made me feel a lot better about myself. CONTRIBUTO R S

FREQUENT

FRUSTRATED

FLYER FLYER or

Frequent flyer points …. three words that can have people spending $100’s more on flight tickets just to accrue them, along with the many questions, queries and tribulations that can sometimes go with it! It is claimed that frequent flyer points are the second largest currency in the world and when the ultimate goal is to effectively ‘fly for free’, you can see the attraction. Let’s run through the process of how they work along with some of the main considerations: I. WHICH PROGRAM TO JOIN? Within Australia, and particularly Cairns, it is the One World Alliance, including amongst others, Qantas, Cathay Pacific & BA, which are the most popular choice for many. The opposition to this, the Star Alliance Group, has Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Thai Airlines, United Airlines & Air Canada amongst its members but has limited options out of Cairns. Both have their strengths though, depending on your chosen destinations so it’s worth a little research with your agent before deciding which is better for you.

When making that initial decision, I would suggest basing it on a combination of utilising your preferred airline and ideally one that operates to and from your nearest hub or home city, and flies to your favourite destinations. II. ACCRUING YOUR POINTS Other than the most obvious way of flying with your preferred airlines to accrue your points, most major credit cards allow you to earn extra miles based on every dollar your spend on the card. Of course, everybody in theory wins this way; you receive your points and the bank loves you as your using their credit card! If you are, of course, purchasing your trip itself on that particular card, you are effectively doubling your rewards. III. USING YOUR POINTS

Typically these days, you’ll need in excess of 180,000 points to look at Europe as a destination, less than that and most places in Asia & the Pacific are still accessible. Another choice is to book and pay for a standard economy class trip and use your points to upgrade to Business Class. Now we’re talking! Getting the most direct routing can also pose problems and often the airlines will require you to book months in advance or may even have an embargo on the dates you are looking to fly. Don’t let your travel arrangements be frustrating when frequent flyer points don’t work for you and let’s face it, that is quite often; your travel agent will advise on the best alternative to get you to your desired destination.

plan your travel from the comfort of your own home, OFFICE or local cafe... “ we could never FIND the time to visit a travel agent. now we don’t have to, they come to us...fantastic!” helen from redlynch

TESTIMONIALS 2014... Believe Anything is Possible & Join Team EmPowerFx

W

“My life changed for the better when I met Emma in January 2012 and started training with the emPowerfx crew”

Tae J os ts on s

hen I started training, just doing the 400m warm up lap left me puffing and gasping for air! One of the first things I told Emma was about a recurring dream I had where I was a great runner and could run long distances. Running was something I thoroughly detested and was terrible at. This, I now realise is because these are the messages I was telling myself. Your thoughts become your reality and Emma encouraged me to challenge myself, my thinking and made me believe I could achieve whatever I set my mind to. I am proud to say that in June 2013 I completed my first Half Marathon (21.1km) in the Cairns Half Ironman team event. My next goal will be a full marathon (42.2km) run in 2014. Emma is not just a personal trainer but more of a life coach who is genuinely passionate about helping you become the best version of yourself and makes you realise that anything is really possible if you believe it is. Emma is always there to provide support, motivation and inspiration along your journey to achieving your goals. I am truly lucky to have found such a warm-hearted, genuine and inspiring person. I cannot speak highly enough about training with emPowerfx. If you want to join a great bunch of people who are welcoming, supportive, encouraging and enjoy having a laugh, then you must come and join us. We’re not just a training group, we are like a family. Not only will you meet an amazing bunch of people and create some great friendships, you will also become a happier, healthier, and fitter version of yourself.

“If you like the idea of group training with a bunch of like-minded people seeking fitness and fun, then emPowerfx is definitely for you”

or many I had been overweight, unfit, unmotivated and not particularly happy. I had tried several diets and started many exercise programs that always started promisingly, then seemed to lose steam after a month or so. At 31 years of age and weighing 107 kilos, as well as having high blood pressure, I bought an exercise bike and managed to lose 7 kilos. Needing something more , I enquired to Emma Miller at emPowerfx about boxing fitness classes, as I had always been interested in boxing. Emma & Meagan were friendly, welcoming and very helpful with challenging routines and advice on safe and correct training. One session a week has now turned into five sessions a week that include boxing and BootCamp, which are regularly held in different outdoor locations and provide a great atmosphere for exercising. Now at 32, and weighing 90 kilos, my diet and medical condition is completely under control. I’m even attempting triathlons, which is something I never dreamed I would be capable of ! emPowerfx and their friendly training crew have provided me with fitness, friendship, healthy lifestyle and the ability to achieve my goals, even though it sometimes hurts!! For the first time in my life, I actually feel alive!! P.S – I hate mountain climbers ;)

mma has been with me ever since I decided to go on the roller coaster to a better, healthier lifestyle. When things going great she was there, things not so great she was there. Then the comfort zone theory came along and boy did Ms Miller take me out of that. You could see the whites of my eyes, and probably still see a little bit there because I’m permanently there now achieving things, I always watched other people do and thought nawh I can’t do that. Well, it appears there is no such thing as “can’t” only can do with Emma. Being part of Coral Coast and 70.3 Ironman teams was my total break point. Yep, whites totally showing thinking there is no way could do that swim, I was going to be eaten by a croc, or swam over or, or, or. Yep all the excuses counted up until Emma said yep it’s going to be hard, but you can do it. She believed in me when I didn’t and slowly week after week, tears (oh yeah there were tears) and smiles, it started to come together. There has been a smile on my face ever since crossing that 70.3 Ironman finish line. A little bit, thank gawd that’s over, but then there is a huge part; I did it, holy dolly batman (kids might read this I have to keep it clean) I did it. On crappy days I think about that day and all hard work went in to achieve it, smile and you know what….what’s next I say, and hopefully get over this mid life crises soon. Over time Emma and Empowerfx crew have become family, support you in good and bad times. Emma is there to chuck you out of the comfort zone and achieve things you never thought possible. It’s an adventure but one worth jumping on board for because you won’t look back because you won’t need too, a very special person will be there supporting you all the way.

have been training with Emma and Meagan for 3 years….everything from BootCamp & core sessions, to boxing & multi day fitness retreats. What began as a casual trial of various fitness sessions has resulted in a long lasting and sustained commitment to keeping fit with emPowerfx. Right from the start, I recognised qualities in Emma and her team that drew me in, with their positive energy, deep sense of commitment to individual’s needs, professionalism and natural coaching style. They also clearly loved their jobs. Whilst Emma’s knowledge, work ethic, coaching talent and passion for fitness are clearly evident, it is her sincere warmth, sense of humour & sheer enthusiasm that keeps people coming back, year after year. She has a natural ability to bring out the best in people both physically and mentally, helping people achieve mind and body balance. There’re lots of words to describe Emma Miller and her emPowerfx team – motivational, inspiring, dynamic, generous – but the thing that stands out for me is her sincerity and genuine desire to get people excited about feeling good. I’m proud to be part of the empPowerfx crew and to say that Coach Miller is not only an awesome coach, but a great mate.

“It is difficult to explain how much your life will change when you meet Emma Miller and start training with the Empowerfx crew. Every person in the team is so welcoming, supportive and ready to step out of their comfort zone.”

efore 2013, I considered myself to be healthy and fit. However, I would never step out of my comfort zone, purely because I thought I was at my best. Like many people, I would often compare myself to other people and consider their fitness and confidence impossible for someone like me. I started a training programme with Emma in January 2013, which incorporated boot camps and a schedule leading up to an Olympic Distance triathlon in June. My fitness, and more importantly, my confidence, improved dramatically! I started to achieve things that I never thought possible, trust in my abilities, and wake up every morning being so inspired by myself and my teammates. It is easy when you train with such supportive people like the Empowerfx team, being led by such an incredible woman, Emma Miller. I feel like a new person after training with the Empowerfx team. Physically, I have improved beyond belief; finishing my first Olympic distance triathlon and completing a 90km bike ride in Cairns 70.3. But beyond this, I have gained mental strength, determination and confidence in myself that never existed. The Empowerfx team and Emma are exactly that...Empowering. I now truly believe that anything is possible. If you are ready to test your limits, try something new for the first time in a supportive environment or start believing in yourself, this is for you! There are a great variety of classes and times, fantastic coaches and life changing team.

Christopher & Victoria

of the month

H I L T O N

Who are you and what do you do? Christopher and Victoria Hilton, from Sydney, married for 35 years and love each other dearly. We have coiffed the gentry of the Tablelands for the last seven years where our salon is still running. We have extended our expertise to a new venture in Edge Hill in a brand new, elegant boutique salon which has been modernized into an Avant-garde light industrial design. Hairdressing is our hobby. Victoria loves colour correction and beautiful blondes and says “its difficult to get the right shade, eh girls?” Christopher just loves cutting and styling out great hair do’s How long have you been hairdressing for? Christopher for 44 years and Victoria for 35 years. How has your practice changed over time? Massively...through creative innovation, science and technology. Hairdressing has vastly changed since the 60’s and 70’s. The techniques today are far superior. What memorable responses have you had to your work? Memorable? Brides, TV Personalities, Directors, Actors, Musical Theatre, right across the board, we’ve had tremendous success and praise from our clients depending on us to bring them innovative stylized personalized images. What was the inspiration for choosing Maletti ‘Avant Garde’ for the theme of your new salon? The Maletti salon furniture is from the ultimate and

largest hairdressing warehouse in Italy (Scandiano, near Milan). Maletti design every Loreal Studio worldwide and all the biggest names in Hairdressing use them. We have chosen the furniture from the latest collection called “Avant Garde” and have added a light industrial theme to it..we hope you like it! How do you keep with the current trends and techniques? Always reviewing and updating, doing courses which are available online and in new collections. We like top end hairdressing, contemporary and relevant to every clients needs, with technical insight. Styling inspiration with creative use of TIGI products and Colour. Technicians fly up from Sydney throughout the year. The haircuts show a femininity and refinement and together with the beautiful colours, these are looks with wide appeal that many clients will desire. Colours achieved are endless; luxurious, rich and saturated block colouring with seamless blending. What is the best part about owning your own salon? All parts of hairdressing through the stages of working for a boss up to owning your own salon are fantastic. Having a boutique salon infuses creativity and inspiration, which creates a wonderful environment to work in. I think taking your time with each client is the way to go, not overbooking. What tips do you have for those wanting to change their looks? Prepare yourself for change in colour and style. Talk with your hairdresser about what you like, the request

must be clear; hair off the face, placement of parting/ length. Its good to give a photo off a magazine or Ipad of what you like and your hairdresser will be able to create something around your requests which will be flattering to your features. Then be ready to enjoy and carry off what you both decided on. To get the best creative flow from your hairdresser, communication is essential. How you treat your hairdresser can stifle or encourage creativity. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Always listen and understand your clients requests. Describe a real-life situation that inspired you? What really inspired me was what I discovered in hairdressing “THE FOCAL BALANCED HAIRCUT”, that is that everyones neck protrudes to the left, the head is tilted to the right & twisted back making the left side of the face more forward than the right. Actually everyones features are bigger & higher on the left side than the right, the left side of the face is rounder & the right side is flat. You see everyone thinks their features are balanced, but that is so far from the truth. The “FOCAL BALANCED HAIRCUT” uses your hair like a fabric to hide the unwanted abnormalities & corrects & enhances the features.

There are many factors which influence intimate relationships for a couple. One factor is that of male erectile dysfunction, E.D. the inability to achieve and maintain an erection to be able to complete satisfactory intercourse. This is usually called impotence. As men age their natural level of hormones (testosterone) decreases, they may put on weight, develop diabetes or have high cholesterol. They may need to take various medications or may suffer from depression or have other physical conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes or prostate problems which can contribute. In order to achieve an erection, it is necessary to have blood flowing in to the penis faster than it flows out, a bit like filling a bucket which has holes in it. The single most contributing factor to cause impotence is smoking and a number of studies have shown a direct relationship between the sudden onset of impotence and heart disease within the subsequent six months. A visit to the General Practitioner is the first step in seeking treatment for this condition. The doctor will take a history, perform an examination and perhaps arrange for blood tests or other investigations. Treatment may involve the use of tablets which may be taken before intercourse is likely to take place or alternatively, some medication can be taken daily in a low dose which allows more spontaneity, rather like being “on the pill”. It is important to note that a recent study has shown that 77% of tablets purchased on the internet have been shown to be counterfeit and that 80% contain less than half the dose of active ingredient that they claim. Some men may find assistance with a Vacuum Enhancement Device (VED) which is rather

like a bicycle pump which is placed over the penis to “pump it up” and then a rubber ring is placed at the base of the penis to prevent it going down. It is important that the ring is only left in place for about half an hour and not forgotten! These devices are somewhat cumbersome and some people find they lack spontaneity. Another alternative is to inject a substance in to the side of the penis which increases the blood flow. It is important not to “overdose” on these substances as the erection may not go down as intended within half to one hour and permanent damage may result. The injection technique should be taught by the doctor and a test dose given to avoid that. Usually the injections are supplied as a single dose. There are some companies on the internet which supply “cocktails” of medications to be injected at grossly inflated prices or have annual subscriptions for supply. The usual cost for a single dose on prescription is around $15. Finally, in some cases it may be necessary for the man to have a penile prosthesis inserted. This is a device which is inserted by a surgical procedure and works using a hydraulic system where the device may be inflated to create an erection and deflated when not required.

With Jenny’s Hair we wanted to create some lift and soft movement. We took Jenny’s length up to her shoulders to create volume and gently framed her face with some soft layers and a soft full fringe.

With Jenny’s Colour we wanted to keep a nice natural look but just enhance it by injecting some warmth with a conditioning Semi Permanent Colour to protect the hair. We went for a warm Auburn infused Chocolate to produce shine. We also added a couple of honey foils under each side for some interest and highlight.

Emma FRIDAY 9 MAY

Pask

Following the enormous success of her appearance on the TV show “The Voice” Australia 2013, and the invitation by her coach, international music star Ricky Martin, to record on his upcoming album – Emma Pask’s unique vocal talents now have her in hot demand.

“T

he greatest gift to Australian Jazz Vocals in the last decade” is how James Morrison, this country’s most awarded jazzman, describes Emma Pask. Performing since she was 16, she’s a winner of a Mo Award for “Jazz Vocalist of the Year”, has guested with countless touring acts here and overseas, appeared on movie and commercial soundtracks, and more. Now, with the success of her three recorded albums, it’s not hard to see why this show will be a hot ticket on the Jazz Up North 2014 series. Her talent was spotted by James Morrison during one of his regular visits to high schools when she was just 16. She first sang with his band that night and has been touring with Morrison around Australia and overseas, ever since. While Emma’s voice and style are unique, and individually her own, her performances are reminiscent of the classic era of jazz, when swing was top of the charts. By request, in 2006, Emma performed the Bridal Waltz for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s wedding, also performing through the evening with a swinging set of big band numbers with the Sydney All Star Big Band. She has been a regular guest on national TV shows like Hey, Hey Its Saturday, the Midday Show, Good Morning Australia, the Today Show, and has sung to VIP audiences including the late Diana, Princess of Wales, Princess Mary of Denmark, and the Prime Minister of Australia, whilst also performing to audiences of up to 80,000 people. More recently Emma appeared in series 2 of the TV show “The Voice” Australia. Her Coach, Ricky Martin, was so impressed with Emma’s vocal ability, after she performed ‘Mas Que Nada’ in both English and Portuguese, he announced to the world that he would like to invite her to record with him on his upcoming Brazilian album, so strongly did he believe her voice needed to be heard. Despite her achievements and the international recognition of her talent, Emma retains her natural, refreshing, unpretentious and positive approach to life. James Morrison says, “whilst it’s fashionable to be a jazz singer these days, she’s the real thing!” Come see the show on Friday 9th May at Tanks Arts Centre, and see why everyone’s talking about Emma. Tickets through Ticketlink.

Restaurant Celebrates

By Pip Miller

Two Delicious Decades

O

wner, chef and co-founder, Craig Squire said Ochre’s approaching milestone would mark a special chapter in the restaurant’s history. According to Craig this special occasion will be celebrated in a number of ways that includes the introduction of a ‘Favourites’ menu showcasing two decades of the restaurant’s best and most popular dishes. As the longest running Cairns restaurant managed by one owner and in the same location, it was the constant challenge putting Australian cuisine on the map that has mattered most to Craig and his team. “When we came to Cairns in 1994, the prospect of dishing up crocodile, emu and kangaroo was a daring and relatively new concept. However, it was always our overriding aim to develop a brand of dining that would be taken seriously by ‘foodies’. Ochre has, along with a small group of Australian chefs and restaurants, been a pioneer of modern Australian cuisine. “Local trade is now consistent and strong with lots

ON 8 APRIL, 1994, THE CAIRNS DINING SCENE CHANGED FOREVER WHEN OCHRE RESTAURANT OPENED ITS DOORS. AFTER COUNTLESS DISHES, THOUSANDS OF DINERS AND A LONG LIST OF AWARDS, THE ICONIC ESTABLISHMENT WILL NOTCH UP 20 YEARS THIS MONTH.

of groups using our private dining space for special occasion lunches and dinners.” When it comes to writing the recipe for Ochre’s enduring success, Craig said it is not one, but a combination of factors that were key. “To begin, we have never underestimated the importance of tourism to our business and have readily embraced marketing in all its forms. “We have also always operated with a commitment to core values. Being a stickler for quality and consistency is fundamental, as is never confusing the customer with style changes.” Training is also something close to Craig’s heart. “Over the years, 40 apprentice chefs have learned their skill with us and two have gone all the way through the ranks to Head Chef.” Like many successful businesses, diversification has played a key role. “The introduction of private and event catering has proved very fruitful. From couples to conventions, Ochre Catering has helped produce memorable events for thousands of guests. Just two

years ago we expanded further launching Tropic Spirit Catering to service reef tourism and strengthen the team’s service capabilities. “We now have two kitchens, two teams of chefs and seven vehicles that enables us to cater for major events such as the opening event for ATE in Cairns in May this year.” From humble beginnings, Ochre Restaurant continues to thrive and etch its place in Australia’s regional dining scene. As the chef and owner behind the Ochre brand, Craig Squire’s experience and talent resonates in restaurants across the globe with several chef residencies in Asia and the Middle East as well as consultancy work on new venues. Just this month he will visit Dubai to oversee the opening of an Australian themed dining outlet, Bushman’s Restaurant that he has helped develop at the Anantara Resort. And so the journey continues. Taste. Watch. Dance. Play at

Port Douglas Carnivale

By Alana Campbell

F

rom May 16 to 25 Australia will turn its attention to Port Douglas, the jewel of tropical north Queensland. For the past 19 years Port Douglas Carnivale has been entertaining thousands of locals, interstate travellers as well as international visitors, serving up delicious, fresh, regional produce and a first class event program with a location to die for. Port Douglas Carnivale manager Roy Weavers says the 2014 event program is no different and is the largest and most diverse ever to be put together. “Port Douglas Carnivale has continued to grow and evolve into one of Australia’s leading festivals and these new events prove that people are hungry for more,” he says. The opening weekend will comprise of the Sheraton Mirage Longest Lunch and the Macrossan Street Parade on Friday, May 16 and the Family Beach Day on Saturday, May 17, which will feature Yabusame and medieval jousting. “This is the first time a Yabusame event has ever been seen in Australia and we are looking forward to introducing it at Carnivale. It will definitely be a display not to be missed and I’m sure there will be a lot of interest in it on the day.” Port Douglas is also set to come alive with a week-long dedicated street art and music festival. Starting at 11am and running until 7pm each weekday (May 19-23) the inaugural Port Village Shopping Centre Street

Art and Music Festival in the heart of Marcossan Street will play host to an array of street artists, as well as singers and dancers performing street theatre. “The Street Art and Music Festival will create a real buzz in the air with music bringing the town to life. We are really excited to introduce this new event and thrilled that the Port Village Shopping Centre has come on board to support the festival in this way.” Kicking off the second weekend of food events will be the Zinc Chandon lunch and Palates of Port on Friday, May 24. On Saturday, Taste Port Douglas returns for another year at the Sugar Wharf with celebrity chefs Colin Fassnidge and Massimo Mele headlining the event. This all day event will showcase the region’s best produce with cooking demonstrations plus food, wine and beer tastings from many well-regarded suppliers including Wonga Foods, Julatten Earth Foods, The Hungry Hummingbird and The Tea Chest. The event will open at 10am with cooking demonstrations on the main stage. Tickets can be booked online for an early bird price of $10 or are $12 at the door. One of Carnivale’s favourites – Food, Wine and a Taste of Port – also returns on the second weekend. Let your hair down and party in Rex Smeal Park at this premier event, which has been sponsored by Virgin Australia. Themed Out of this World, it will showcase delicious food from the

76

region with entertainment provided by one of Australia’s most iconic bands. “Port Douglas Carnivale has come of age. For the last 19 years this celebration of life in the tropics has been going strong and this year will be the biggest yet and with the calibre of celebrities such as Colin Fassnidge as well as gourmet food events across both weekends, we are extremely excited,” Roy adds. The festival program will be further bolstered by some old favourites including comedy, music, theatre, the Exemplar Clipper Cup as well as other sporting and community events. This month on April 5, the Miss Port Douglas Carnivale Ambassador 2014 will also be announced as part of the festival’s 20th anniversary celebrations. There will be a gala dinner from 6.30pm, and the $99 ticket will include a three-course dinner with matching wines and entertainment at Rasa Restaurant at Niramaya Villas & Spa. “Tickets are now on sale and we are really urging the community to get behind this very special launch event and the whole of Carnivale as we celebrate 20 years,” Roy says.

FROM THE REEF TO THE RAINFOREST AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN, PORT DOUGLAS CARNIVALE CELEBRATES LIFE IN THIS STUNNING SEASIDE TOWN WITH A 10-DAY PROGRAM OVERFLOWING WITH ENTERTAINMENT, ACTIVITIES, FOOD, WINE AND MUCH, MUCH MORE.

Most couples today find that they are rushed for time and short on cash when it comes to planning and financing their wedding. One solution is a beach wedding and here in Northern Queensland we have some of the most picture perfect beaches at your finger tips. Beach weddings offer a sensible yet beautiful solution to the expense and headache normally associated with a traditional wedding. They are easier to plan, cheaper to pay for and a whole lot more fun for everyone. However, you still need to have a plan in place and there is are some important things that must be considered when you start planning a beach wedding. Firstly you must choose your location wisely. The main issue you will have on the beach is the breeze. Try to pick a protected area like a cove or an area that is away from the elements. Be mindful of the tides too. Most beaches do not require a permit for small informal weddings but always check this before you decide on your location. Check with the local authorities before finalising your choice. It is always nice to ensure that your guests are

comfortable. For some people depending on their age and mobility beach conditions are not favourable. You should always provide seating for the elderly or less mobile. It is extremely important, especially in Tropical North Queensland to ensure that sunscreen and insect repellent is on hand for your guests. Remember to attend to peoples allergic needs. This will avoid awkward situations, it will also make people like you more in the sense that they can count on you to attend to their needs. If some of your guests have mobility impairments, recognise that it’s nearly impossible to push a wheelchair in the sand, and it’s very hard for people who have difficulty walking to negotiate sand as well. Many beaches have walkways or platforms, look out for these when planning and use these accordingly. For a tropical flare, decorate a canopy with tulle and twinkling mini-lights and silk flowers. Use hurricane candles for lighting. Remember that most public beaches don’t allow you to set up tents or any structures, and some don’t permit chairs so you must check with the local authorities and council before making any decision. Look at finding a wedding officiate local to the beach of your choice to perform your wedding ceremony. Often they are the best people for advise as they specialise in beach weddings and can provide some extremely valuable information and top tips.

You might not get the support from people you expect but this should not stop you from performing at your best. Your loved ones will be helpful and progress should be made in many aspects. You could feel a little overwhelmed at times because of all the changes now taking place around you. Some courage is now needed. The domestic scene may be suffering due to the amount of work you have to get through in a rather short time. Best to ask for assistance so you can get through the job a lot quicker.

Try to do something different during this period and it will invigorate you to no end. There are some improvements in all aspects that you have put some effort into and some financial luck is also evident. Very romantic period ahead in which you could be doing too much daydreaming to concentrate properly on the things at hand. Try to keep your head clear enough to check all options. When you find it is too hard to please everyone, then it is time to just please yourself. People will come round to your way of thinking. Some luck with a Taurus.

A very busy social life will be guaranteed of happy times ahead and someone special could emerge soon. Lots to do and not much time to do it in. this will make for a very frustrated person. You may need to take off some time to relax and enjoy the company of the family. A very good period for financial matters and some good luck is indicated. Keep an eye on your expenses and make sure what you buy is what you need and that it is a bargain.

Big changes coming up and many of them because of some new friendship. Keep a tight eye on your possessions, as it is not a good period for lending or borrowing, something might not come back. There could be some surprising news from a distance and your relationships with close ones could change somewhat. If you need an understanding person look to the most obvious ones first. More interest in your health and fitness should give you a lot more to do during this next twelve months. There should be some luck in games of chance and a surprise from your loved ones.

There should be much more happier times ahead and more interest in your personality. The romance department looks good but keep your cool if a new romance is developing, it might take time to adjust. You might need to make up your mind about someone during this period and career matters could keep you very busy indeed. But there are some chances for having fun to so all on all a very good time ahead. Things should be working out well in your career matters and some changes for the better could be expected. If starting anew business or something new ahead of time you could do with expert advice. If you feel that you have not had the chance to say your piece do it now. You should be reaping some of the rewards of your hard work now. But only the hard worker benefits form this trend. New ideas are very possible in relationship matters. There is a trend to be more aggressive than usual but keep your mind on the task at hand and do not jeopardise the chances you get. Your social life could ruin your sleep.

Try not to worry about things that might not even happen, positive outlook will achieve much more. It could be a good period for love life and new interests in this field. This should be the start of a very interesting time relationship wise. But do not neglect close ones, as your availability is very important to them. You might have to start all over again with some people or some jobs, so you do not feel discouraged at the moment. Financial matters are better left to the hands of the experts.
