PUBLISHER’S NO TE Welcome September & spring! I can’t think of a better way for CairnsLife to embrace September than with our ‘Faces of Fashion’ cover story. I am fortunate to call all three fashionistas, Amanda Macor, Louise Struber and Olivia White, my friends and I know you will love reading their story and achievements as they put the fab in fabulous. At 14, I had hairy eyebrows and received the nickname ‘Chewy’ (after Chewbacca in Star Wars) from my two older brothers. Mum took me to Amanda to receive my first eyebrow wax at Cairns Colonial Club and I have been friends with Amanda ever since. She is still the undisputed eyebrow queen today. And how could I not be friends with Liv and Lou? They draw you like a magnet with their effervescent personalities and humble nature. In this issue, we’ve also got a line up of successful ladies in our Women in Law feature and some self-made Owner/Operators who’ve had a dream and made it their reality. To top it off, we also feature Man Made, showcasing handpicked, inspirational men in a variety of business fields. We hope you feel inspired by their stories and motivated to pursue your own goals. Wishing you the happiest September and see you at the races!

F A S H I O N These fine fillies are not only inspiring leaders in their respective professions, but also fashion icons in the Cairns’ and national racing scenes. Many racegoers who have been to the Cairns Cup know the superior standard of fashion and style that oozes from not only the Fashions on the Field contestants, but also the racegoers themselves, but not all will know the ladies who work tirelessly to make the Cairns Cup the seamless and stylish soiree it is today. “The Cairns Cup this year was definitely a success. The numbers were up and the bar was raised,” tells Louise Struber who in addition to her role with the Cairns Cup is part of the marketing team at Cairns Central and the brainchild behind the recent initiative The Fashion Incubator by Cairns Emerging Designers. Louise was the Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival Ambassador in 2012 and has recently been appointed as Cairns Jockey Club Fashion Ambassador with friend and fellow fashionista Olivia White, who is second in charge at Salt House and a finalist in the Cairns Business Woman of the Year Awards. “It’s been a challenging process, but very rewarding,” tells Olivia of the awards. “Men often pat themselves on the back, but women are less inclined. It’s rewarding to look back on everything I’ve achieved in my career so far.” Despite the Cairns Cup fashionable reputation today, the races were not always as glamorous. “I remember going to the races as a teenager in a little

dress and feeling overdressed, but today you never feel that way,” says Olivia, who has a family connection in racing and took out the Millinery Award category in 2012 wearing a Michalenko by Appointment dress and Amanda Macor hat. “When Amanda came on board she turned the Cairns Cup into a fashion event not just a race,” Olivia adds. With more than 20 years experience working with the races, Amanda was just what the Cairns Jockey Club needed to transform the Cairns Cup from a regional race day to a nationally recognised event. “I put together Fashions on the Field at the smaller racedays with Cairns Central and Myer on board as major sponsors about six years ago,” tells master milliner Amanda, who is not only on the Cairns Jockey Club Committee, but also owns local business Brow Babes and imakeup, a unique shopping experience combining make up, stunning dresses and impressive race day hats alongside her own striking designs. The ladies, who have all taken out categories at the Cairns Cup, including Louise who has won Fashions on the Field five times, have all been nationally recognised for their trackside style, competing in Fashions on the Field throughout Australia. “It was great when we had three local Cairns girls

in the top 10 for the New South Wales sash,” says Olivia. Amanda was also featured in Grazia magazine as the best dressed at Melbourne Spring Carnival 2012, which is an amazing achievement. Support from a major sponsor, such as Myer, is crucial to the Cairns Cup success, but it’s the smaller, local boutiques that help to keep the event alive. “Local boutiques, such as Tea Lily, Bitchnhound and Sassi Shoes, have been with us from the start and don’t get enough credit,” tells Amanda. “Babinda Electrics also offered a cash prize for Sunday’s Fashion on the Fields, which is incredible.” Racegoers may have spotted Myer ambassador and male model Kris Smith at the Cup this year, who was there to assist the judging of the Fashions on the Field. “He is one of the best ambassadors we’ve had,” says Louise. “Nothing was too much trouble and he was very down to earth and friendly.” Attracting influential people, such as Kris, as well as high-end Myer executives is testament to the success of the event. “They were impressed, but not surprised with the standard,” says Olivia. With plans already in the works for next year’s event and continued redevelopment of the venue itself, you can expect much more from this trio and the always-popular frock fest that is the Cairns Cup. market leader

Yvonne Rowland’s career in real estate spans decades, making her an expert in her much-loved field. Yvonne Rowlands was managing a local camping store selling tents when she decided she wanted to steer her career in a slightly different path. “I figured if I could sell tents, why can’t I sell a house,” she explains. So in 1980, she began her career in real estate with Professionals on Sheridan St. “Real estate was different then. We didn’t have computers or mobile phones. Everything was done the hard way,” recalls Yvonne, who was the only woman in an office of nine men. “In 1980, you could buy a three or four bedroom house in Edge Hill for $85,000, but today it would be worth $600,000.” After many years working for a number of companies, local developer and builder John Richardson approached Yvonne in 2002 to become the principal and

licensee of Cairns Key Real Estate, a boutique real estate agency working in a unique situation under one parent company. “We have Kenfrost homes, David McCoy homes, Richardson Plant Hire and Cairns Key Real Estate working under one umbrella offering house plans through to ready-tooccupy houses from Palm Cove to Gordonvale. Each area compliments the other. We have the biggest variety of plans and if we don’t have what you want, Kenfrost or David McCoy can draw it up for you. Besides our subdivisions we handle everyday general real estate with the same professionalism.” The business has continued to grow over the years, starting with Yvonne and an office manager and expanding to a nine-person team and a second office at Clifton Beach.

17

CairnsLife

Yvonne attributes the success to the team and their standard of work. “We’re very professional and stand by our guarantees. I always tell my staff to be honest and tell the truth and people will return. I’ve had many people come back over the years and I’ve sold their property two or three times. They’ll tell me how happy they are and that’s really rewarding.” The price of houses at the moment is very affordable and Yvonne believes it’s a very attractive time to buy a home. “The confidence is coming back in the market and the price could not be better. Real estate is exciting and it’s a lifestyle. You need to work hard and put in the hours to be successful.” Head to www.cairnskey.com. au or phone Cairns Key Real Estate on 4032 0411.

QUEENSLAND COUNTRY CREDIT UNION You can expect local experts and competitive rates from Queensland’s largest regionally based credit union. After finishing school, Queensland Country Credit Union Area Manager for Far North Queensland, David Smith, had to decide what career to pursue and having confessed he wasn’t very good with his hands (and wasn’t that talented to pursue a professional sporting career), knew he wanted an office role. “My father mentioned his Bank Manager was looking for staff and so I applied and started my career in banking in 1975,” explains David. After more than 25 years working within the big bank network, in 2009 he made the transition to independent, customerowned banking institution Queensland Country and has not looked back. “Queensland Country Credit Union was born in Mt Isa in 1971 and has grown into a billion dollar organisation with 23 branches throughout the state and more than 300 staff,” David explains. “We look after our staff and our customers and it shows in our branches. It is an environment people love to be in.”

What sets the credit union apart from other financiers is their genuine hospitality, local expertise and decision making, ongoing competitive rates and a true passion for supporting the community. “We operate to benefit our customers because they are essentially owners of the business. In Cairns, we support clubs like Little Athletics, community festivals, sporting clubs and schools,” says David. If you choose to bank with Queensland Country Credit Union, not only will you get what the bigger banks have to offer, such as home loans, personal loans, credit cards and general insurance, but they also own one of Queensland’s top rated health funds, according to Cannex. And their local loan and insurance experts are willing to come to you if you don’t have time to get to a branch. “We understand that people are time poor and while they know they might be able to save money by switching their loans or insurances, they just don’t have

19

CairnsLife

the time to go through it all,” David explains. “If you have someone you trust who can come to you and walk you through everything, you’ll get through your to do list a lot sooner and with greater peace of mind.” You can also do your banking online, via your mobile or over the phone through their Queensland based contact centre. With an extended ATM network through the Westpac group, genuine hospitality and expertise through local branches and mobile banking experts who can come to you, Queensland Country Credit Union is a great banking and health insurance option. For more information, go to www. qccu.com.au or phone the Earlville branch on 4033 5299 or Smithfield on 4038 3999. “Queensland Country Credit Union Limited ABN 77 087 651 027 Australian Credit Licence 244 533. FEDERAL TYRES if you live in Cairns, then you’ve probably heard the advertisement and catchy jingle; now meet the men behind the successful Scott St business. Federal Tyres is more than just a place to get quality tyres at a great price, it’s an experience – and that’s what coowners Ben Mitchell and Rick Lee wanted to create. These characters are all about creating an environment full of personality and motivation, where people can come in, watch and smile. “People have seen the character of the business on the ads and that’s what you get when you come in,” tells Ben. “We get people coming in from all walks of life wanting Rick to do the Federal jingle.” The only thing bigger than their personalities is the range of stock on hand, which spills out onto the bright yellow and green shopfront. The locally owned and family-run operation has a massive range of mags and tyres to suit your needs, from passenger and performance tyres to light truck and 4WD. In fact,

they’re 4WD tyre extreme specialists and now stock Mickey Thompson tyres alongside their impressive Federal range. “We have $1,000,000 worth of stock on hand, so we’ll always have what you need without the waiting time,” Ben tells. “The product is excellent and we get it to you at a cheaper price. We also offer a 100 per cent lifetime warranty on our Federal tyres, meaning you know you can count on them.” The business, which also has stores in Gordonvale, Atherton and Moresby with new stores opening in Cooktown and Weipa, will be opening a larger shop on the highway in Earlville named Federal Auto Care. “You’ll have one physician for your vehicle, so not only will you be able to get great tyres for great prices, but also wheel alignments, all suspension work and modifications as well as services

done to your vehicle in the one great place,” explains Ben. Being locals, the guys are big supporters of the local community and think it’s important to give back. Not only do they support the pig hunts and burn out comps in the region, they also employ the local youth, to teach them skills and ethics. You may have also seen their impressive displays at the Cairns Lifestyle Expo and Cairns Show and they’re also set to have a standout float at the Cairns Festival. With plans to continue to expand their business, there’s no stopping these Cairns characters. So as they say, forget the rest, we’re the best, come and see them at one of their great locations. KiNgSLeY SCARfe QUEST REALTY

Real estate kingpin Kingsley Scarfe is the epitome of the Aussie battler, starting with nothing and climbing his way to the top. Self-made man Kingsley Scarfe, principal of Quest Realty, grew up seeing his father buy and sell property and while he may not have realised it at the time, the seed was planted for a lifetime in the real estate industry and a passion for generating wealth through property was born. While living in a caravan with his thenwife and four children and with no real savings or equity, he dreamed of owning his own property, but the bank had knocked him back for a loan. Not one to let his circumstances hold him back he found a way to build his own property, getting council approval on his hand-drawn sketches. “I tried to do as much of the labour myself and managed to build a house from nothing in 90 days,” tells Kingsley, who in turn created equity so the bank would lend him money to pay for the building materials and expenses. “You couldn’t do that these days though,” he laughs. In the ’90s he joined the industry he loves

so much and being the ambitious character he is, opened his own business, Quest Realty, in 2006. The business started as a small sales company and grew to the large sales and property management business it is today. “In 2006 I had nothing: just myself, a mobile phone and a small office. Today we handle more than 500 properties with 11 staff members and our office has more than doubled in size over the last 12 months.” Just like Kingsley, the team at Quest are all highly experienced and passionate about what they do. Kingsley in particular is extremely passionate about teaching others to invest in property and sharing his experiences about wealth creation. “I like to help my clients as well as being a teacher and a mentor for my staff. They all own their own property and they know what they’re talking about because they’ve been through it themselves as tenants, investors or buyers.” Kingsley’s five children have now followed

22

CairnsLife

his advice, either owning property or renovating and selling property to generate wealth. His advice to them as well as everyone else is to read The Richest Man in Babylon by George S Clason. “I’ve given it to all my staff and kids to read. It has easy, simple steps to generating wealth,” advises Kingsley, who believes in the power of positive thinking and written goals. Kingsley has also written a book “If Only” I Knew Then What I Know Now About Investing in Real Estate for Wealth Creation, which can be downloaded from the Quest website. Quest Realty is a quietly successful company and the sales people and property managers are ready to help anyone with their sales or rental properties. “And if you’re going to buy property in Cairns, now’s the time,” he recommends. Go to www.questrealty.com.au or phone Quest Realty on 4042 7888.

RhYS CARmADY

STATUS SIGNS

The signage industry has come a long way since its inception and Status Signs’ ability to keep up to date with the latest technology and provide expert signage options has cemented their reputation as an industry leader. Since opening the business in 1997 as a small pin striping operation, family owned and operated Status Signs has grown to a full-scale signage company offering branding and signage solutions to the region from concept to creation. General Manager Rhys Carmady’s parents originally owned the business and while initially Rhys hadn’t seen himself working in the signage industry, he found himself working for his family’s business. “I learnt the trade from the ground up – from design to operating the printers to sales,” tells Rhys. “Back then we were a two or three person operation, but we continued to grow over the years into the 20 person team we are today.”

After managing the business for four or five years, he officially bought Status Signs with his wife, Catherine, who also worked for the company. Today the company, which has won numerous national awards including the Australian Sign and Graphic Award, offer all things signage from logo design to signage and digital vehicle wraps and they also manufacture and install all their work. “It’s not just about paintbrushes anymore! We have the latest equipment, such as wide format printers and spray booths; steel and aluminium welding; trade-qualified staff and we’re backed by the Queensland Building Services Authority licence. We’re completely

24

CairnsLife

self sufficient,” he explains. “Some people come in not knowing what they want and we help them create the best signage for the business and their budget. The best part is the creativity and variety of the work. It’s exciting to create a client’s concept and be able to help promote their business.” You may have seen some of their expert designs and signage on display as you drive into the Cairns Airport or throughout the airport terminals. Status Signs was also behind the feature sign of the Collins St precinct at the Tanks Arts Centre. Head to www.statussigns.com.au or phone the team on 4035 5120.

John Mlikota

IN CAPITAL ADVISERS from life on a farm in the Tablelands to a self-made success story, John mlikota is the senior investment manager and director of inCapital Advisers. Growing up on a tobacco farm in Dimbulah on the Atherton Tablelands, John knew he was destined for more than life on the land. “I grew up on the farm wearing hand me down clothes and working before and after school,” tells John. “The hardship of growing up in these circumstances where I would beg, steal and borrow was motivation to create a better life for myself.” Feeling as though he was destined to go to university, he studied commerce at JCU and went on to become an accountant, but felt it wasn’t the right path for him. “It was a little too rigid with too many confines, so I decided to get into management consulting and corporate advisory throughout Europe, USA and Sydney.” After more than 20 years, he was ready for another change and decided to come back to his roots in the Cairns region to establish his own business. “It was the lifestyle and opportunity

that brought me back to Cairns,” tells the self confessed family man. “It meant more opportunity for my kids as well.” His other motivating factors were breaking conformity, challenging established thinking and simply doing his own thing. “To own an Australian Financial Services Licence is a big deal. I established Independent “InCapital” Advisers three years ago to offer advice that is free from incentive or industrial influence,” tells John, who also holds several community directorships and mentors start up business ideas and innovations. “We’re not offering products, but customised solutions for the wealthy through to the less wealthy, from cradle to grave and from start up businesses to established businesses.” The advisers, which operate under John’s licence, are both young and old and have life experience in the areas they cover, from mortgages, shares, property and superannuation

27

CairnsLife

to children’s education, retirement planning and personal insurance. “It’s a buzz to see the couple with the young family that have managed to get ahead and save for a holiday or pay off their credit card. Or on the flipside, a retiree that’s living comfortably in retirement without financial concern.” John, who values ethics, integrity and honesty, plans on continuing to grow his business footprint from his base in Cairns. “We’re local, but we’re global thinking,” he says. “Travel taught me a great deal and helped develop my skills. I like to educate people about thinking beyond their circumstances.” Throughout all his years in the industry, he believes his best investment is his wedding ring. “My wife and family are the most important thing in my life.” Go to www.incapital.com.au or phone 4031 4575.

Philip Bovey

PHILIP BOVEY & COMPANY LAWYERS A twist of fate led Philip Bovey into a life-long career in criminal law. Philip Bovey of Philip Bovey & Company Lawyers is one of the most experienced criminal lawyers in Cairns, however his path into the industry had an interesting beginning. “I left school in year 11 and was working as a labourer in Brisbane,” tells Philip. “It was the late ’70s and I was working on the QIT building that eventually housed the law school.” A few years later, at the age of 20, he realised he’d made a mistake leaving school and went back to study law in the building he helped to construct. His career as a criminal lawyer commenced at a time when workers in essential services had just been banned from striking and were being arrested daily in the streets. It was Philip’s job to go to the courts and bail them out. While this was an interesting time both legally and historically, a job offer in the tropics lured him north.

“I knew I wanted to work in Cairns, and got the opportunity to work for Legal Aid on criminal cases.” After Legal Aid, he went into partnership and opened his own practice, as well as working in remote communities with Indigenous people, but in 2013 he was ready to branch out on his own again. “I resigned from partnership in January and started Philip Bovey & Company Lawyers, going from a team of nearly 30 staff to a team of just four.” They cover all aspects of criminal law from assaults and drug offences to violent offences, stealing and murder. “To me all cases are important, although there are some cases that are more challenging than others. I represented the deceased’s families in the Arnold/Leahy homicides on the Tablelands, which was a 20-year job. It’s most satisfying to be involved in

28

CairnsLife

matters like these and it’s always satisfying to finally see justice done.” Despite these highs, there are certainly difficulties in the criminal law system. Philip feels as though the disparity between the resources of the state and the resources of the defendant are challenging. “The state has uniform police, detectives, forensic police, funded government laboratories and unlimited budgets, while on the other side there’s a solicitor and barrister and they’re limited by the funds of the client.” Despite these challenges, Philip has triumphed as a highly experienced lawyer and prides himself on his high standards. “People’s lives and liberty rely on me doing my job.” Go to www.pbandcolawyers.com.au or phone 4035 8300.

BITCHNHOUND & WOLFNCUB The guys behind quirky clothing boutiques Bitchnhound and Wolfncub combine backgrounds in fashion and business for a winning formula.

Cairns’ fashion forward and those wanting something a little different should all know Spence St boutique Bitchnhound, which offers casual street threads through to going out wear for guys and gals. “We opened Bitchnhound in 2012 because we found it difficult to find clothes we liked without having to go south,” says Jared Bliesner who owns the store with partner Damian Lamaro. “We have everything from the feet up, from shoes and socks to jeans, tops and hats and we’re exclusive for most brands we stock.” Opening the store meant people could access these brands while still supporting the local community. “Bitchnhound allows people to shop locally for the brands they want. We have 47 brands from Heart by Nana Judy for guys to Sass and Evil Twin for ladies,” tells Damian, who hails from fashion

hotspot Melbourne. With the success of their first shop, they decided to expand, opening Wolfncub in March this year as an extension of their first store, but offering more high-end brands. “We were so busy at Bitchnhound and wanted to expand,” explains Damian. “Grafton St is a fashion district and Wolfncub meshes well with the other boutiques,” adds Jared. The extension of the Bitchnhound brand is equally as quirky, as the name suggests, offering labels such as Kiss Chacey and Ruby Sees All. The guys have also launched their own label, Bitchnhound, off the success of their boutique business, creating unisex shirts with unique designs. “It’s young, fast fashion,” says Damian, who explains how the label is now distributed nationally with further plans to grow

the distribution network. The shirts also feature the duo’s dog, which is sometimes hidden in their designs. The guys are big on supporting Australian labels as well as the local community and are involved in Catwalk Cairns at the Salt House the last Friday of every month as well as sponsoring the Cairns Cup. “Every month Catwalk Cairns showcases us and three other boutiques in Cairns, which benefits local businesses,” tells Jared. “And we’ve supported the Cairns Cup for two years as a major sponsor,” adds Damian. gRAeme ChiBNALL

CHIBNALLS JEWELLERS graeme Chibnall turned a school holiday job into a lifelong career as a jeweller.

Chibnall Jewellers was established in Cairns as a small workshop and showroom in 1979 and has grown to a larger store on the Esplanade boasting shiny glass displays filled with handcrafted diamond, opal, precious and semi-precious pieces begging to be taken home. “We offer a design and custom-made service as well as remodelling and repairing,” tells Graeme, who together with his team of expert jewellers has more than 100 years experience. “We have three jewellers here and we all have our own technique, but blend with each other’s style.” Over the years, Graeme has met some really interesting people with unique concepts, but one standout customer is adventure man James Castrission who has climbed mountains and kayaked seas with fellow explorer Jonesy. “James came in and we designed an engagement ring for his partner, Mia. He carried it across four countries before proposing to Mia on top of Mount Kilimanjaro,” tells Graeme, who has a framed photo of the proposal in the store. Like many happy couples, the pair came back to have their wedding bands custom-made as well. “Some men take a few months to propose and it’s a thrill when the woman comes in wearing the ring. Often she’ll come in a few days later to start designing the wedding band,” laughs Graeme, who has even been invited to some customer’s weddings. The best part of the job for Graeme is the journey from meeting the client to the final outcome, but another special part of the role is bringing sentimental pieces of jewellery back to life. Graeme sees many pieces from client’s parents to their grandparents that need to be repaired, reworked or restored to their former glory. “It’s great to see them come back to life and the job is not finished until the customer is happy,” he explains. Customer satisfaction is a huge part of the business and Graeme finds a lot of customers become like family. “I’ve seen a couple of generations of customers come through these doors and I think I’ll see another generation again,” he smiles. So whether you’re after a specially designed, sparkling diamond engagement ring, a handmade or customised piece of jewellery or would like to see a treasured family heirloom brought back to life, the experienced team will be able to bring your unique vision to life. BENDIGO BANK

ReCoRD low interest rates are opening doors to new business opportunities across Australia. The market is creating even greater competition in the commercial lending game– and one of the smallest banks is proving to be a major player. Bendigo Bank outperformed its competitors in commercial customer satisfaction to be named Roy Morgan Business Bank of the Year in 2011 and 2012. The bank’s local commercial lending team has injected more than $50-million in lending into Far North Queensland in the last 12mths, helping to reenergise the local economy and job growth. At the helm of it all are Business Banking Managers Kieran Herlihy and Graham Bennett and their Business Banking Lead Russell Schmidt. With a diverse portfolio of business clients, from commercial property investors to earthmoving companies, the trio prides themselves on providing a product to suit all styles of business along with competitive pricing and personalised service. And Kieran says that there

are currently promising opportunities for new and existing businesses to take advantage of the competitive lending market. “Everyone knows it’s been a tough few years in business, especially in Cairns. A lot of people have been waiting for the right time to start or grow their business, and with the market starting to turn, there is plenty of opportunity. Low interest rates can help increase returns on investment, as well as stimulating the market and assisting with the flow of funds through the economy – it’s an exciting time for business.” And the Cairns local says there’s nowhere more exciting to be doing business than the unique market of Far North Queensland. Kieran grew up in Cairns and began his career in the finance industry in 1996, working for Northern Building Society, a large commercial broker and several major banks before joining Bendigo Bank 18 months ago. “Cairns is such a

31

CairnsLife

challenging but enjoyable city to work in,” Kieran said. “And where else can you step outside the office at lunchtime in the middle of winter to high twenties and blue skies?” Cairns has worked its magic on the whole Bendigo Bank team, with Mareeba-born Graham also choosing to stay local, and Russell living and working in Adelaide, Melbourne, Hong Kong, London, Sydney, Auckland and Western Australia before moving to the Far North 13 years ago. He joined Bendigo Bank in 2010 and took on the role of Business Banking Lead for Northern Queensland. “I enjoy the genuine community-focused culture of Bendigo Bank and leading a team of business banking experts all the way from Bundaberg to the top end. Bendigo Bank has rapidly evolved into a real alternative in the business and commercial banking marketplace and to be part of its continued growth and development is very rewarding.”

Specialty jeweller Bejewel on Spence St is now the exclusive Cairns stockist of the luxury Australian pearl jewellery brand Kailis. With only three Kailis stockists in the state, Bejewel, owned by local husband and wife duo Francesca and Andrew, have recently introduced Kailis Australian pearls to their existing range of specialty and custom-made pieces of jewellery. “We were approached directly by Kailis to stock their brand of exclusive jewellery and the timing was right as we were ready to diversify our range,” says Francesca, who has owned the store with her husband since 2000. “We’re excited to be affiliated with such a quintessentially Australian luxury brand. Kailis is a West Australian family business that they have successfully developed into a recognisable brand of jewellery. The other reason we decided to take on the brand was because every Kailis pearl is guaranteed Australian and is native to the pristine waters off the North West coast of Western Australia.” The Spence St store, which focuses on specialty and custom-made jewellery such as custom made engagement and wedding rings made in store by Andrew, now boasts Kailis rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets set in 18ct gold and sterling silver.

Kailis create jewellery that is contemporary and versatile using Australian South Sea pearls. The individual pearls are hand selected and undergo strict selection criteria before they are transformed into the modern contemporary designs Kailis are renowned for. The pieces, which all come with a certificate of authenticity, feature Australian South Sea pearls in a variety of sizes paired with diamonds. “Kailis jewellery features modern pearl jewellery designs for the modern woman and prices start from around $600,” adds Francesca. One of the stand out Kailis designs that Bejewel offers is the Miss Versatility Strand, a pearl strand with hidden clasps that can be worn as a long strand or modified into a shorter collier necklace and a bracelet. “My favourite piece from the collection is the Angelic Versatility Pendant,” explains Francesca. “The pendant includes a 90cm chain and matching diamond enhancer which allows the pendant to be worn in several different combinations. You have the option to wear the piece as a long pendant, or doubled over to

32

create a shorter necklace. This makes it a truly versatile piece.” Kailis is also willing to help their customers find the perfect piece, offering a bespoke service for those wanting something extra special. “A customer contacted me as she wanted a Kailis Miss Versatility strand with pearls of a particular size and colour. We didn’t have one in stock that matched her criteria, and Kailis didn’t have one on hand either. Kailis then hand selected the pearls and sent me a specially made strand for my client to view and it was exactly what she wanted.” Kailis, which boasts Natalie Imbruglia as the face of the luxury brand, is the perfect option for a timeless piece of pearl jewellery to be treasured. A MAN DA j o h ns to n

of the month

How long has Fusion Hair Design been in business? More than 20 years, but we (Natasha and Amanda) have owned it together for eight years now. What do you love most about your job? Being able to change someone’s day by seeing them love their new look in the mirror and have a new confidence in their step as they walk out! What are the key hair trends right now? A softer, more feminine, girly look with beautiful, open curls in long or shoulder length hair. Also hitting it big at them moment is the shorter, soft pixie crops – even Beyonce in wearing one at the moment. What are the colour trends you are seeing? More block colours with slight variation of different tones within the colour and definitely bright red are still in. Also deeper toned blondes. Where do you get your inspiration? The girls we work with. We all love to bounce off each other with new ideas. We have learnt from keeping up to date with courses or looks we see around. We love to do new ideas to keep our clients excited. If you could cut the hair of anyone who would it be and why? Rihanna or Beyonce. They are both very versatile and can wear just about any hairstyle with the wow factor. You could just go wild creating that new statement look. For people who are unable to afford high-end salon haircuts and big-name products, what advice can you share about making the most of your look when these are out of reach? Having a look that is easy for your lifestyle. What are some of the most common mistakes you see your clients making with their hair? Going too long in between visits. To keep your style looking beautiful and easy to manage, you need to visit your stylist every 4-6 weeks, also having the right product is just as important for your style and using them correctly. That’s why we at Fusion like to teach you when we are creating your style so you can create the same look at home. What do you hope clients walk away with at the end of the appointment? To walk away feeling amazing and feeling confident in knowing they can go home and re-create their new look. Where do you see Fusion Hair Design in five years? Still delivering the latest trends and giving each and every client the creative, professional experience they deserve. You relax; we listen.

Q. My body feels lethargic and nothing seems to help. I exercise regularly, I’m not overweight, I eat well and take vitamin supplements. What else can I do to get my body feeling energised? A: A lethargic body can be a symptom of depression and this should be eliminated as a possible cause by your GP. Other causes are related to how much quality sleep you are getting and how your body uses the food you eat as an energy source.

Sleep is extremely important, it is a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems. Human sleep needs can vary by age and among individuals, and sleep is considered to be adequate when there is no daytime sleepiness or dysfunction. Sleep debt is the effect of not

getting enough sleep; a large debt causes mental, emotional and physical fatigue. Sleep debt results in diminished abilities to perform high-level cognitive functions. Living in the tropics, we lose a lot of dietary minerals through excessive perspiring. Over twenty dietary minerals are necessary for optimal health, and our ability to source and absorb these minerals can be

challenging!! You can take mineral supplements, or absorb them through the skin in a therapeutic mineral enriched hydrotherapy called Thalassobath. This relaxing underwater massage remineralising the body increasing circulation, eliminate toxins and fluid retention, ease aches and pains, and giving a feeling of general well being and increased energy.

The Art of Nails

for some people, having their nails ‘enhanced’ should be as natural and undetectable as possible; but for others, who are bold enough to stand out from the crowd, there is ‘Nail Art’. ‘Nail Art’ is, just as the name suggests, art/ decoration for the finger nails. I have long been a fan of Nail Art and this fact was reinforced to me when I recently attended my High School reunion. A former classmate noticed my nails - which of course were coloured and decorated to match my outfit. He pointed out that it didn’t surprise him to hear that I was a Nail Technician as he remembers me always having some kind of wild designs on my nails at school. His comment reminded me of the many hours I had spent as a junior high school girl, slicing sticky tape into thin strips to create the perfect checker-board patterns on my nails or the arrays of little dots I would create with the tip of a toothpick. Yes, Nail Art has been a passion and a pastime of mine for quite some time! Just as we wear jewellery to ‘decorate’ our bodies or wear makeup to enhance our

faces, I believe Nail Art is the ultimate way to customize and individualize your look whether it is for a special occasion or just to brighten up every day. Matching your nails to your formal dress, races outfit, wedding/ bridesmaids dress is the ultimate in attention to detail. And of course, matching your nails to your clothing, handbag or shoes will definitely grab attention at your next social function! I find nail art extremely rewarding and I am always looking for creative, innovative ideas and products with which to individualize my customer’s nails. Decals, stickers, foil, striping tape and glitter are some of the basic techniques used. More complex techniques include stamping, airbrushing, the inclusion of items like crushed shells, pressed flowers, even feathers and snake skin! All of these products can be securely imbedded into a gel overlay which ensures

their longevity. Nail Art comes in infinite forms; from the very subtle to the outright outlandish, from the practical to the totally impractical and everything in between. Whether you love it or are happy to leave it, most people can respect and appreciate the time and effort involved in the production of a miniature work of art. For Nail Art designs as individual as you are, artificial nails and everlasting colour that won’t damage your natural nails, even after removal, please call Jodi from The Art of Nails on (mob) 0408 735 105. For some more examples the designs I have created, please visit my Facebook page ‘theArtOfNailsCairns’. For the month of September, to introduce you to the pleasures of Nail Art, please accept my gift of art adorning two nails with every gel nail service, with my compliments.

BLoom HEALTH & WELLBEING EXPO Dedicated fundraiser and organiser of the Pink Ribbon High Tea, Emma Lodge, has spent the last five years raising awareness and over $35,000 in funds for breast cancer research, however this determined young lady has got fed up waiting to find the cure and believes if we want to make something happen we need to take charge ourselves, and this is concept behind Bloom – a Health & Wellbeing Expo to be held at the Shangri La on Saturday 12th October. “Perhaps now is the time we need to change tactics, rather than focusing on awareness lets start looking to prevention,” explains Emma. There seems to be a lack of information on simple changes we can make in our lives to help prevent disease in the first place.” Emma said. With the success of Bloom in 2012, the expo has now blossomed into a full day event, featuring up to 45 exhibitors in the key preventative areas

of - Food, Skincare, Wellbeing, Exercise and Environment. Meditation, yoga, food presentations, health topics and motivational talks are just some of the line up for the day. Highlights include specialist guest speakers Therese Kerr – author, visionary and Ambassador for KORA Organics by Miranda Kerr; Kathryn Alexander – an internationally acknowledged expert in the field of dietary healing and detoxification; Stephen Eddy - Principal of Health Schools Australia and Curtis Aiken, who at 28 years old was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and made a choice to change his lifestyle and overcome the disease. According to Emma, this one-day event will share knowledge and provide us with the tools so that we can make informed choices on what we eat, how we live and the products we use. Bloom will be held at the Shangri La Hotel on Saturday 12th October from

9:00am until 4:30pm. Entry includes access to all the wellness talks and workshops, a variety of exhibitors specialising in natural health and wellness, a cleansing juice and healthy noodle box plus an expo guide and directory to keep. BACK PAIN CAN BE A

A significant number of people experience back pain during their lives. While this is usually the result of an injury or strain and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, it may also be caused by something more sinister.

In the last 16 years over 500 patients have been treated with Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy at Cairns Day Surgery. Cryotherapy offers a minimally invasive treatment option for prostate cancer.

“Cryotherapy has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates of any prostate cancer treatment.”

KILLER

A significant number of people experience back pain during their lives. While this is usually the result of an injury or strain and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, it may also be caused by something more sinister such as cancer. Now before everyone rushes off to their GP let me reassure you that these days this is not a common way of presentation for a diagnosis of cancer. However, in the past it was not uncommon for men to present with prostate cancer in this way. Also, women used to present with breast cancer and both sexes with lung cancer. It is important to note that these cancers presenting in this way are unlikely to be curable. The reason it is not so common now is that we have programs to check for these conditions in the early and potentially curable stages. There are mammograms as well as ultrasound and biopsies for breast cancer and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests, prostate examination, ultrasound and biopsies for prostate cancer. While the PSA test is not a specific test for prostate cancer, it does tell us if there is a change happening within a man’s prostate. That change may be enlargement which occurs as men get older, inflammation or various physical activities including sex, exercise, bike riding and others which cause the test to increase. At the recent Prostate Cancer World Congress held in Melbourne an attempt was made to deal with the conflicting advice issued with regard to testing for possible prostate cancer. The result was the Melbourne Consensus Statement which consisted of five statements.

CairnsLife

The statements may be summarised as: 1. Tested men aged 50-69 are less likely to die from prostate cancer or have it spread from the prostate to other parts of the body. 2. Not all men diagnosed with prostate cancer require aggressive treatment to live their normal lifespans. 3. The man must be considered as an individual. There may be a family history of the disease or he may have other conditions which may be more life threatening such as heart disease. 4. A PSA test in the 40’s is useful to predict the future risk of prostate cancer. It can help sort the men into the need for more frequent or less frequent testing and help men decide with their doctors whether they wish to pursue testing further. 5. Older men (over 70) with a life expectancy of more than ten years should not be denied testing. The important thing is that most people would like to live for a long time and a good time and in weighing things up, treatment and its consequences should not be worse than the condition.

Ride was also proving popular for athletes wanting to test their endurance skills over a longer distance, according to event organiser Lesley Stephens. “This is a true test of an adventure on two wheels, while still having fun and raising money for a today’s youth who are at risk,” she added. “Participants can either choose to ride the 90km one way trip from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation and be bought back by bus, or the full return ride of 180km, pushing from Port Douglas through to Daintree and into Cape Tribulation before turning for home.” Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree executive officer Mr Ryan said the TriPort and Whitelion Jungle Ride were both excellent events leading up to one of the region’s largest events - the 2013 CANEGROWERS Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival. The festival will incorporate distances achievable for all levels of runners, including a 2.5km Fun Run for kids, the Redkite Charity 5km, the Newsport Daily 10km and the Sheraton Mirage Resort Half Marathon. However, the pinnacle events will be the Run to Paradise 74km Ultra Marathon and the Steve Moneghetti Marathon. Steve Moneghetti will once again return as an ambassador and leader for the 2013 festival, which is predicted to be bigger than ever.

Bali i Do

Sadly, and I mean desperately sadly, I have just returned from my twenty second visit to Bali. I will live there one day!! This visit was to celebrate the wedding of two dear friends and I am sure that I can vouch for all those who attended, that the choice of Bali as the location, ensured a truly fantastic wedding that will live long in our memories. The really special thing about a wedding abroad is that in addition to getting a holiday out of it, you are also given the opportunity to mingle with your fellow guests for a much longer period of time than the traditional Saturday afternoon / evening affair. Generally speaking, at most weddings you tend to mix with those you know and if you do meet new people, you only have that day to get to know each other. In the case of the wedding that I just attended, we had booked five beachside villas of various sizes for five days. There were a number of other soirees in addition to the actual wedding so we were give ample opportunity to really get to know all those who attended. In fact we all hit it off so well we spent much more time together. To be married to someone you love is a special thing and should be a special event, which is why many Australians have been choosing Bali as their wedding venue. It has romance, mysticism and a unique culture. With beautiful beaches and luxurious hotels and villas dotted around the island, Bali is one of the most amazing destinations to get married abroad. The Balinese culture is one of the most welcoming around the world and they will ensure that your wedding day and celebration runs smoothly. With several towns to explore, historic sights, stunning terraced rice fields, breath taking sunsets and exciting markets, Bali is a choice that has much to offer the newlyweds and their guests alike. Whether it is a laid back and casual affair or a truly luxurious experience you are after, Bali can provide it all. To be married legally in Bali, persons of non-Islamic faith are required to file with the Civil Registry Office in the Regency where they are staying, firstly, a ‘Notice of Intention to Marry’ and also a ‘Letter of No Impediment’ which is obtained from their consular representatives. Of course you can choose to have a non legal wedding in Bali, and either sort the legalities prior to going or after you return.

Our experience counts.

If the idea of getting married on the ‘Island of the God’s appeals to you, and it is a great value option, then my top tips would be: • Get a reputable local wedding planner. They know the place, speak the language and will make it so much easier for you. This should be stress free event. • Go there at least 6 months before hand and scout the location, taste test the menu and arrange all the other things you want to create your perfect wedding • Stay awhile – at least a few days before and after the wedding and make it your honeymoon destination too. Bali has so many special and exotic spots • Plan activities and social events outside the wedding day so you have time to spend with the friends and family who will be attending. • Think about a villa style wedding, you can choose your own setup, decoration, catering company, entertainment etc, without the limitations that some wedding packages, offered by hotels and resorts, have. The other great benefit of having a Bali villa wedding is the privacy and intimacy it offers. All of these additional choices come together to create an event which is a true reflection of your own unique taste and style. Wherever you choose to marry this year have fun!

Benji

Rider

of the month

VANDENHOOVEN

Hi Ben! Tell us a little about yourself: HI I’m 20 years of age; I’m a Senior Elite BMX racer From Cairns, Queensland, Australia. I’ve lived in cairns all my life and I love what I do. What kind of riding do you do? I enjoy doing BMX racing, It’s a great sport to get into, I started when I was 6 and throughout the years it’s taught me so many things about myself and who I am mostly because it’s not a group sport. The more you put in the more you get out of it. What began your passion for riding? When I was 4 my dad got me a little bike so I could ride with him to work, since then I loved it and wanted to race on the track, I would watch all the pro’s when i was young and decided I would love this sport. Are you involved in a club in Cairns? I’m involved in many ways. I attend working bees and coaching for the younger rider’s and beginners. Do you have any sponsor and how do they benefit you? Yeah I’m sponsored by Pump N Pedals the local cairns bike shop, there amazing they do so much for me, always helping out when I need part’s before event’s and giving me tones of discount’s and stickers and to hand out to the kid’s. They also sponsor events and give a good hand out as well as the gear is top quality. What are some competitions you have participated in and where did you place? I’ve done about 6 nationals and competed at the bmx world championship’s I didn’t place in any final’s but i still done well to make it that far. It’s a tuff sport. You can have one bad race then it’s all over before you know it. I’ve won a few far north and State number one titles. My favourite would be the ACT titles in Canberra.

What was your biggest stack and what injuries did you have? Well in all my year’s racing I’ve never had a serious crash; I’ve never pulled out of event’s because of injury as such. I’ve been landed on a few time’s I’ve crashed in corners and got ridden on, fell over the start gate, flipped it and lost control but nothing to serious. How do you prepare for a race? This is a big part of it. Going into event’s you have to tapper down from gym training / sprint training and on track training. Your nutrition has to be spot on as well as your mind set. On the day you would do about 10 – 20minutes of static stretching, attend the event and do a 10minute slow ride and then a 15 dynamic warm up before getting on the track. As far as on track warm up goes, if it’s your local track about 4 – 6 laps is enough, if you travel you might just do a few more. What do you find rewarding about the sport? Personally I love to win and when you win you get the drive to keep doing better and better. It’s the best feeling knowing the hard work has paid off and you can be proud of what you achieved and how far you have came. For most people they enjoy it for the fitness side and the rush of jumping 8 meters in the air and carving corners at high speeds. What advice do you give to young riders? My advice would be to never give up and if you put in the effort the rewards will show, it won’t happen overnight. Keep progressing and also find bigger jumps to jump! Where is your favourite place to ride in Cairns? Cairns club has an amazing facility the track is 400 + meters in length with jumps now ranging from 2 – 12 meters. It’s great and for all ages. The amount of different combo’s and options you have is really good and it never gets boring.

These inspiring and professional women have proved that gender is not a barrier in the legal world, balancing work and family life and still being leaders in their game. They’ve also shown that it’s never too late for a career change, as many entered the industry later in life and have still excelled, even opening their own firms or becoming associates at their company.

catriona burke & monika leipold SMITHFIELD LAW

The odds may have been against Catriona Burke, but she’s come out the other side as head of successful Northern Beaches firm Smithfield Law. When you walk into Principal Solicitor Catriona Burke’s Smithfield firm, you’ll be greeted by a friendly all-female team and a welcoming environment with sunny yellow walls and personal flourishes. This inviting space was exactly what Catriona wanted when she purchased the business three years ago, although the female line-up was only by chance. “We never intended to have an allfemale firm, but women work really well together and we’re very supportive of one another,” tells Catriona, who has a Bachelor of Arts in addition to her Bachelor of Law degree. “We think it works because we have a more holistic approach to law. We tend not to be too formal because we don’t want people to think going to see a lawyer is a scary thing. It should be a reassuring experience.” Catriona’s journey was not without its challenges. She had wanted to study law as a school leaver, however she felt her

working-class background and gender was a barrier for her at the time. Despite this personal set back, she did go on to study law and worked at various firms before purchasing the Cairns practice. “I knew I wanted to study law because I have a strong sense of justice and how things should be and I’m passionate about the law.” She purchased Smithfield Law, formerly Cameron Price Lawyers, in 2010 and toughed it out as the economy suffered through the GFC. Three years on, she’s still fighting, but humbly attributes luck as part of her success. “Opening my own firm is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it means I can practice law the way I want to practice it.” Having suffered as a small business means she can relate to clients who have been through the same thing and Catriona really connects with them. “I like the way Catriona operates. She is the best lawyer I have ever worked for

and her knowledge is unbelievable,” says associate Monika Leipold. “She will help someone because it’s the right thing to do. It’s about the person as well as the law.” There are many points of difference to this modern business, which specialises in commercial and property law, one of them being their payment options. Catriona believes it’s up to the client how they would like to pay, whether it’s a fixed fee or paying incrementally. “We’re quite flexible. It’s no fun for us to pursue people for money when we’ve built a relationship with them. We charge a fair price and we are willing to negotiate with our clients how they wish to pay us,” she explains. “You have to be that flexible in this economy.” To contact the team, go to www.smithfieldlaw.com.au or phone4038 8300.

Smashing my stereotypical image of a partner in a law firm, melinda foley represents the modern face of the legal profession. Combining her approachable, down-to-earth manner with a professional work ethic, this ambitious mother of two catapulted her way to partnership level within seven years of joining the team at macDonnells Law.

64

CairnsLife

Born in Maryborough and later educated in Townsville, Melinda set her sights on the firm early on. “Even when I was at uni, MacDonnells was on my radar,” she says. “I was offered a position back in ‘97 but had commitments in Townsville, so when the opportunity came to live in Cairns I was excited to join the firm.” Perhaps surprisingly it wasn’t MacDonnells Law’s history, size or enviable reputation that ultimately won her over. “When I went for the interview – I realised straight away the people were fun,” she laughs. With a 129-year history in Cairns and additional offices in Townsville and Brisbane, the firm has substantial resources to draw from. Specialising in commercial litigation and disputes, Melinda says being part of a larger

firm also enables her to liaise with other solicitors in order to meet their clients’ objectives. “The industry is no longer so individually driven and at MacDonnells Law we are extremely focused on client service and team work. Clients are looking for someone who can understand their situation and provide a reasonable, effective response to the problem,” she says. Due in some part to a larger female presence, Melinda says the industry as a whole has become more modernised. “We have a lot of flexibility in terms of part-time hours and working from home, and we are getting to a stage where all types of contributions are valued,” she says. In terms of her own work/life balance, Melinda says it’s important to set both priorities and boundaries “I try

65

to commit to what I’m doing at the time – I also surround myself with a good team and step away from the ‘super star’ model,” she laughs. In her role as partner, Melinda is focused on being a leader and creating an environment where people can achieve in individual ways. “I want to keep growing that flexibility and bring in different people with different styles,” she says. With client satisfaction her ultimate goal she also says it’s vital to be people-driven. “I really enjoy contact with clients and I like the variety,” she says. “Every case is different which means you’re always learning – and I find it very satisfying being able to help people achieve a positive resolution.”

marino moller lawyers New Zealand ex-pats Christine Ross and elena Pelbart are making their mark on the legal scene in the far North.

Many of the residents in Cairns have been lured to the region with the promise of warm weather, a more laidback lifestyle and pristine beaches, at least that much is true for Christine and Elena, Solicitors at Marino Moller Lawyers. Christine, who specialises in commercial law and commercial property, had been practicing law in Christchurch, New Zealand for 20 years when she swapped life in the South Island for a tropical existence in sunny Cairns. “I live in Yorkeys Knob and it’s like waking up in paradise every day,” tells Christine, who was drawn to the firm because of the size and reputation. “Marino Moller is a good medium-sized law firm with a great range of clients between Gordonvale to Port Douglas and beyond.” Although Christine loves the location and firm, there have been some aspects, which are different to home. “In New Zealand we transferred funds electronically so clients can receive their money straight away. In

Australia we use bank cheques, which cost more to the client and take longer to clear, which I believe is an inefficient way of doing business and property transactions. Also, I was using electronic conveyancing on a daily basis before I left New Zealand. It will revolutionise conveyancing in Australia.” The firm, headed by Charlie Marino and Brett Moller, has just celebrated its 25th anniversary and is a leader in the rural and commercial property fields. “It’s such a nice work environment and everyone is exceptionally friendly and supportive,” says Elena, who operated her own legal firm in Sydney for 13 years, specialising in family law before moving north. “I love helping people who have challenges with family issues. I deal with cases involving either matrimonial or de facto separations and generally they entail property and children issues,” adds Elena. “Cases which require finding solutions for parents with

66

CairnsLife

children are the most satisfying.” “Having a client call and thank you when you have achieved the desired result is most rewarding,” adds Christine, although some cases can be particularly emotionally challenging. “Knowing you’re doing the best you can in the situation is rewarding though.” It’s a real challenge keeping on top of active files and making sure that everything meets time restraints and deadlines and both feel lucky in having extremely experienced and efficient staff working with them. While the location may be laidback and relaxed, these women are passionate about the challenges presented to them on a daily basis and are willing to roll up their sleeves and work hard at doing everything they can to meet the expectations of their clients. hailing from southern NSW, but with a life-long ambition to live in Queensland, Jeneve frizzo has conquered more than one personal goal. Jeneve’s career has many steppingstones, from serving cocktails in Sydney to working on boats, but she’s now found her footing in the legal industry after her husband suggested she get into the field. “My husband thought I should become a lawyer because I win all the arguments,” laughs Jeneve, who had decided on a career change while raising her four sons. With a previous Bachelor of Arts degree under her belt, she completed a Bachelor of Law with honours at JCU in 2002. After graduating, she worked as a judge’s associate, which she described as an educational experience, followed by nine years at a local firm. It was then she decided to approach Peter O’Connor, the principal at O’Connor Law, with the goal of working with him. “Peter is a tremendously respected lawyer in Cairns and I knew I wanted to work with him as his specialty in commercial

law complements my specialty in succession law,” she explains. So she met with Peter, asked for a position in his firm and joined the company as the Senior Associate in March 2013. “O’Connor Law is a boutique firm solely focused on commercial and succession law and it’s a very flexible and supportive environment. There are four female lawyers working with Peter and he is very supportive of their needs as working mothers. The other ladies specialise in commercial law, which sits side by side with my area of practice.” Joining O’Connor Law was just one of her goals and career highlights. Jeneve is also the only Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist in succession law in Cairns, an achievement she acquired in 2011. The accreditation is a nationally recognised measure of excellence, and confirms Jeneve’s expertise in inheritance

law, wills, superannuation and deceased estates. “I was only one of five people in Queensland in the past two years to get their specialist accreditation and am the only specialist in succession law in Cairns,” she tells. During my secondary education, I enjoyed subjects such as debating and public speaking, so

for me it was a natural progression to study law,” tells Rhiannon. The journey into law was a little longer for Beth Rolton, who had a career as a legal studies educator before transitioning into a law degree at JCU. Beth now specialises in personal injury claims such as work cover, motor vehicle accidents, public liability and insurance claims. Having been instrumental in settling many large personal injury claims, Beth describes her job as highly satisfying. “Achieving the best possible result for my clients is incredibly rewarding and motivating.” Amanda encourages professional women to have a mentor in their field. “It’s so important to have someone you can turn to for advice and support,” she advises. “I’m working towards achieving my full potential in my legal career. I’ve enjoyed reading Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg and would recommend this book to any woman who is interested in solutions on how to break through to achieve a leadership role in their career.”

Rhiannon recommends gaining practical legal experience while completing your degree. “Uni was all about theory, so it was beneficial to have had first-hand experience on the job before I commenced work as a trainee solicitor.” Rhiannon also values the structure of the WGC team, which is designed to allow each solicitor to strive for maximum proficiency in their chosen area and maintain up-to-date knowledge. WGC have operated a personal injury department within their firm and have a demonstrated commitment to the local community. Beth joined the WGC team because of the excellent reputation for providing quality advice to their clients during what can be an emotionally and financially challenging time. lisa stansfield GIRGENTI LAWYERS

from tragedy to triumph, this family law solicitor has come out on top. Ten years ago, Irish-born Lisa Stansfield found herself in a desperate situation. Her marriage had come to an end and she was concerned she may lose her home. “I was on my doorstep with a huge mortgage, car loan and two dogs and didn’t know what I was going to do,” explains Lisa. It was at this time her now-husband and mentor, well-known Cairns lawyer Chris Rose, came into her life and the timing could not have been better. “I was having a mid-life crisis and didn’t know what to do with my career, and I thought – if Chris can do it, I can do it!” So she started her law degree at JCU as a mature age student and absolutely loved it. With financial responsibilities, she was forced to work full-time while studying and as fate would have it, she started working in conveyancing at Chris’s firm. “I was working full-time, which meant

my four-year degree went for seven years,” she explains. “In my final year of university I topped my class in family law and won the family law prize, which was a career highlight.” In 2012, she made the decision to move to Girgenti Lawyers, which has offices in Mareeba, Cairns and Brisbane. Here she practices in family law and estates alongside the expert lawyers on the team. “We have a different attitude here and we think it’s important to build life-long relationships with our clients. We want people to see us as their family’s lawyer, just like you have a family doctor. We’re a full service firm, so there will always be someone here that can help you,” tells Lisa, who is now undertaking further study and will complete her Master’s degree in family law by the end of this year. Starting from scratch 10 years ago and working her way up to becoming a

well- regarded family lawyer is not only inspiring, it’s given Lisa an insider’s perspective to what her clients are going through. “I have life experience. I’ve been through it all first hand so I feel like I can really look after my clients. I care about them and I feel like I’m doing something good. When you come to me you get a human being, not a suit,” says Lisa, who regularly volunteers at the Cairns Community Legal Aid Centre. Today, power couple Chris and Lisa are reunited in the office again as Chris has joined the Girgenti team as a senior consultant and Lisa says she has no plans on leaving. “People ask where you see yourself in five years and I say I’ll be here. I’m in a great place and I’m with a great firm.” Head to www.girgentilawyers.com.au or phone the Cairns office on 4051 3833.

michelle menzies M E N Z I E S M E D I AT I O N

michelle menzies was born to help people and that’s exactly what she’s doing at her Cairns-based mediation firm, menzies mediation. Michelle started her professional life as a trained nurse, but her desire to care for people in a different capacity was strong and her career moved in another direction. “My first love was nursing,” Michelle explains. “But I went back to university as a mature age student to study law as I felt as though I needed more behind me to help people.” It was during her degree she discovered mediation, and went on to become not only a nationally accredited mediator, but with additional study and experience, became a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP) registered with the Federal Attorney-General Department. After practicing mediation as an FDRP in Darwin, she was prepared and ready to branch out on her own and moved to Cairns two years ago to establish Menzies Mediation with business partner Tony Neil, who is also a nationally accredited mediator and member of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators of Australia (MIAMA).

“I’m very passionate about mediation. It’s a different process to the legal system because it addresses both parties and each of their interests to resolve the issue together. It is also less costly because there are no court costs and unlike most legal disputes mediation doesn’t take as much time,” she advises. Together Michelle and the team at Menzies Mediation offers family, commercial and workplace mediation allowing people to have their say, voice their concerns and opinions and come to a resolution that everyone is happy with in a confidential and caring environment. Michelle can assist in either workplace or school bullying, in neighbourhood disputes and children’s matters and with her business partner can also co-mediate, creating an equal gender environment. “The process is very informal. The people have the control and make the decision themselves rather than having a third party decide,” tells Michelle. “I help with these discussions and think

about people’s lives and view points and help them to understand what the other person needs.” The most fulfilling part of the role is having people come back and thank Michelle and Tony. “People come back and say they didn’t realise how much there is to discuss and thank us for our patience and understanding,” says Michelle, who realises that we’re all human and we’re all unique. miller harris lawyers

miller harris Lawyers not only boasts a number leading women, but is a leading firm in its own right. Miller Harris Lawyers has a solid reputation in Cairns as a high quality law firm, driven by technical expertise and client satisfaction. It just so happens there’s an all-star cast of women helping to drive the firm’s success. “We have two female partners and three female associates at the firm,” explains Elaine Jesurasingham, one of the female partners. Each of these lawyers has her own specific areas of expertise, which contribute to the broader Miller Harris practice areas, including property, business and commercial law, employment, litigation and dispute resolution, insolvency, wills and estates and family law. The firm is quick to point out that the most important comparisons between lawyers are about competence and ability, and not gender. “We’re a great firm that happens to have a lot of women in leadership positions, not because we have a lot of women in those positions,” says Elaine. However, the firm is proud of its strong history of attracting, retaining and promoting

women. “We recognise there’s a lot of female talent in the legal industry, with more than 50 per cent of legal graduates now women,” says partner Melissa Nielsen. “Our focus is not on attracting more women, but attracting the best legal minds, and increasingly that means more women than has historically been the case.” In an industry with high drop out rates, Miller Harris appreciates the need to work with women and have flexible working arrangements to ensure that experienced and talented solicitors are retained within the firm and the industry. With three of the five senior female lawyers at the firm with children under the age of three, it’s important that the firm is supportive of mothers and their work/life balance. The firm is willing to support different working arrangements, including flexible working hours, and IT arrangements to work easily from home. “The firm understands the often competing roles of family life and work,” explains associate, Melanie Husband.

With a strong background in family law in the region and being a mother herself, Deanne Drummond takes a different approach to conflict resolution. Raised in Townsville, Deanne Drummond got into law through a love of debating and work experience at a law firm during her school years, so deciding to study law after high school was an easy decision. After graduating university with a double degree in law and commerce, she was lured to Cairns with a job opportunity at local firm Farellys Lawyers. “Initially I thought I would practice in commercial law, but when I discovered family law I realised it was a good fit for me and my personality,” tells Deanne, who was an associate at Farrellys Lawyers for 16 years before taking a leap of faith and creating her own firm this year. “I left Farrellys in April and opened NQ Family Law Centre in May this year. I wanted to practice in a different way and offer a personal service tailored to each client’s individual needs. I didn’t want my clients to feel like one of many,” says Deanne, who offers her clients around the clock support with the help of modern technology. The one-woman show offers clients a very personal service specific to their needs and being a mother of two young children, she feels as though she can really relate to her clients. “Being a parent you really understand the trials and tribulations. I can apply my own experience,” she adds. She’s also a qualified mediator and a registered collaborative lawyer, meaning she encourages her clients to work together to find a resolution outside of court. “It’s a more holistic approach to law and the focus is on working with the clients to move forward in the best way. It allows them to improve communication and help put the pieces back together,” she explains. “Particularly when there are children involved it means while they may not be able to resolve things between themselves, they can achieve a long-term resolution for their children.” Deanne has also lectured in family law at JCU and encourages students to realise law is not just about going to court and that you can settle or come to an agreement without a trial. “When people are in court their relationship and communication rarely improves. Most people just want the best for their children so I encourage people to focus on that,” she explains. “We also use the assistance of a lot of experts, such as counsellors, psychologists, medical practitioners and financial advisors. I work in collaboration with them and other specialists to achieve the best result for the clients.” Go to www.nqfamilylawcentre.com.au or phone 4080 7361.

Sandra Sinclair proves that a small firm doesn’t necessarily mean small results. Building your own business can be a difficult task, just ask Sandra Sinclair, who started her legal career as an office junior when she was a teenager living in Adelaide. Since then she completed a law degree and practiced in her own firms in both Adelaide and Cairns, proving hard work and determination does pay off. “I opened AMR Legal in Cairns in 2009 and it was tough breaking into a new environment.” Soon after she decided to relocate and rebrand, trading under her own name. “I decided to move away from Earlville and into the city, opening this smaller practice in May, which is closer to the court and convenient for my clients.” The firm, which features black and white checkerboard floors and bright

red furnishings, may be small in size, but it’s certainly not small on results for the clients. “Having a small firm doesn’t mean we put in a small effort or we have small results,” tells Sandra, who jokes that good things come in small packages. “Being a smaller firm means we have less overheads, which means it’s less expensive for the client.” While Sandra has practiced in many aspects of the law previously, being a sole practice she now practices mostly in family law. “I do civil law, wills, power of attorney, and some contract law, but mostly family law. Since moving to Cairns that area of law has evolved and allows me to really focus on one area,” she explains. She also confesses to working really hard

for her clients and being results driven, a quality that goes back to when she was studying law as a mature age student. “I have three boys and I remember working, then cooking for the boys, then staying up studying for an exam. I’d wake up still at the table at 4am,” she laughs. “Today I’m still working ridiculous hours and there’s always a deadline, but I love what I do.” Even after 15 years in the business, Sandra is clearly very committed and passionate. “I don’t feel jaded. I’m more enthusiastic than ever because I’m more experienced.” To contact Sandra Sinclair, email admin@sinclairfamilylaw.com or phone 4041 3945.

How to survive your work

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Local Distributor for

The work Christmas party can be a dangerous mix of alcohol, partying and your professional network of colleagues, and when your reputation is on the line it’s best to err on the side of caution.

It is possible to have fun at the work Christmas party and still have a job to come to the next day. Here are our top tips for saving face come silly season. 1. Keep the booze to a minimum Sipping your bubbly is much safer (and more attractive) than chugging beers and slamming shots. Play it safe and you’ll thank yourself the following morning. 2. Never gossip about co-workers After a glass of wine, you may be feeling a little carefree, but now is not the time to run your mouth or let your boss know how you really feel. 3. Dancing is ok, but keep it classy Let’s learn from Miley’s mistakes and keep the dance moves PG. Footwear should be worn at all times, too. 4. Never hook up with a co-worker Unless you’re ok with awkward moments around the printer, it’s best to keep your work relationships strictly professional. 5. Don’t call in sick the next day If you’ve kept the alcohol to an acceptable level, you should wake up feeling almost 100 per cent. Grab a greasy breakfast and get to work on time. Or at the very least, be sure to make an appearance.

RFDS Wellbeing Centres Caring for the Cape

CoeN’S marilyn Kepple speaks from the heart when she says the flying Doctor’s Wellbeing Program has had a major impact on life in the remote Cape regions. marilyn was one of 18 Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders who received a Certificate iv in Community Development at a 12-month flying Doctor facilitated course. marilyn said the course equipped her to understand the social problems facing indigenous people. It had also provided her with the knowledge to develop culturally appropriate community programs to address wellbeing problems. Marilyn is now more confident in being an advocate for her people and community. She has put her qualifications to good use since returning to Coen, a town on the eastern tip of Cape York. Marilyn is now a community development consultant in the RFDS Coen Wellbeing Centre. The Wellbeing program is aimed at mental health, suicide prevention, domestic violence and drug and alcohol issues. She said the Flying Doctor’s programs had expanded dramatically during her time, and the signs were all positive. “I was brought up in Coen, and Mum was from one tribe and Dad from another. So I saw a few things over the years. “The Flying Doctor really has made a difference. People have gradually accepted the need to seek help for mental health and other issues and are more willing to talk to someone about them. “The Flying Doctor program has evolved well. There were initial problems, as the attitude was once that it was no one else’s business. But that is changing,” Marilyn said. She now sees several people a day, mainly women, about issues including domestic violence, depression, and alcohol

and drugs problems. Marilyn works closely with other service providers, including clinical psychologists who use the Centre to speak with children. Life is very busy for Marilyn, as she not only works full time and studies, but is also a single mother to four teenagers. She runs a Women’s Group which deals with issues such as domestic violence, is an Aboriginal first aid facilitator, and helps with a Mums and Bubs program teaching baby health and welfare. Marilyn is also studying narrative therapy, which takes her to Adelaide for about a week each month. As if that isn’t enough to keep her busy, Marilyn is a highly regarded artist using canvas to tell stories of landscape and sacred traditions. Marilyn works in acrylic on canvas and linocut printing to depict significant sites, bush food, native wildlife and traditional gathering tools. Every day she thanks the RFDS for helping her and others in the remote community lead a productive life. The Wellbeing Centre program in Coen is just one of four sites across Cape York where these new initiatives have been set up. Centres also operate in Aurukun, Mossman Gorge and Hopevale with each of these employing at least two local people in a similar capacity to Marilyn. Community

capacity building is a major focus of the RFDS Wellbeing Centres and includes not only developing the skills of local staff, but also providing the community as a whole with greater awareness of wellbeing issues. The RFDS Wellbeing Centres provide a flexible service delivery model, catering to local individual and community cultural needs. Visits are conducted either at the centres, in private homes, or ‘On Country’ to accommodate some client’s preference to have a yarn in an open bush setting or during an afternoon of fishing. Services range across a broad spectrum, from pre-employment and administration support, to one-on-one or family counselling sessions. Over the past year, the Wellbeing Centre staff saw over 430 clients, and delivered 1480 client service contacts combined. Approximately 5% of client contacts were delivered in local settings outside of the Wellbeing Centre. Feedback from community members has been very positive in nature. Overall, when surveyed by external evaluators, 89% of respondents considered Wellbeing Centres to be for “all people”, and not just those with mental health problems. Almost all respondents believe the teams to be “welcoming and helpful” with a ‘high’ level of community understanding of the role and function of the Wellbeing Centres.

MASSAGE MEL AND ACOUSTICROO Combing an innovative idea with a practical design, qualified remedial massage therapist Melissa Sprague of Acousticroo is an authorised dealer of SleepPhones and RunPhones headphones. Melissa Sprague from Massage Mel at Redlynch Medical Centre discovered SleepPhones when she confessed to her friend she was having difficulty sleeping. “My friend recommended SleepPhones and since using them I haven’t had any trouble sleeping,” she confesses. Having worked as a registered nurse and a shift worker at a minesite and being involved in accident investigations, Melissa realises a lack of sleep can have an adverse affect on people’s lives and relationships. Realising some of her massage clients were also having trouble sleeping, she decided to sell the headphones through her online business, Acousticroo. “The SleepPhones are soft, polar fleece headbands which are more comfortable than normal earphones and are great for people who have trouble getting to sleep.” They’re also great for travel or for those with snoring partners and noisy sleeping environments. There’s been research to suggest a good night’s sleep can assist with weight loss and help reduce occupational health and safety risks. The SleepPhones also offer an iPhone app where you can download free, specially composed music to use on your device and lull you off to sleep, which Melissa finds particularly useful. “We also sell RunPhones, which is the same system, but with lightweight fabric,” tells Melissa. If you’re having trouble nodding off, the SleepPhones are an excellent, drug-free option and if you need a remedial massage, Massage Mel is one of the few Medibank preferred providers and HICAPs claimable remedial massage therapists. For more information, visit www.acousticroo.com.au or phone 0418 378 630. For massage appointments, go to www.massagemel.com or call 40391255.

Finding

TRUE BEAUTY

As a child, I was the ugly duckling. I had acne, asthma, glasses and a big nose. I was shy, skinny and nerdy. I didn’t look good and I felt even worse. I soon came to realise that ‘the beautiful people’ had it much easier. Life just seemed better for anyone with confidence and a nice exterior. I remember thinking if I didn’t have such a big nose, or I could get rid of my pimples, if I could just make some small changes, I would feel so much better. As I got older, I realised I wasn’t alone. There were a lot of people just like me who had something they were embarrassed about or would like to change. And suddenly I found myself wishing I could help other people feel better, whether by fixing their acne or taking away their scars. I started nursing at the age of 16 and I was a registered nurse by the time I turned 19. It was the first step in what has been more than 40 years of helping others. But first I had to help myself. This

is the first time I have publicly confessed to this, but during those three years I had been saving for cosmetic surgery on my nose. I had the operation when I was 20. My new-found confidence changed everything. And although it didn’t follow until many years later, the vision for Face Today was born. But it took on a far less radical approach, using injectables and other nonsurgical treatments to achieve a desired look, as well as educating clients on health and nutrition to achieve optimum beauty inside and out. But it’s not about vanity or wanting to look like a Hollywood star. Face Today clients are everyday people who simply want to look and feel their best. There comes a time in everyone’s life where we can still feel 18, but we look in the mirror and see a 40-year old with wrinkles staring back at us. Maybe you’ve spent too much time in the sun, you’re battling acne or scarring from your

teenage years or simply want that fresh-faced look you had in your twenties. And then I have clients like Lauren Huxley, who after years of treatment is still a patient today. Doctors gave her just five per cent chance of surviving after she was brutally attacked. But now she can look in a mirror and not be reminded of what happened. It has been just as rewarding to help cancer patients and watch as their vitality returns and their personalities are reborn. And I have had the rare privilege of doing all of this alongside my sisters and best friends who make up the Face Today team. By healing others I have also healed myself. And I am so grateful to be living a dream come true.

THE LOCK DOCTOR

A locksmith never opens and tells- but believe me when i say that we get called out to some very amusing situations. Despite owning a renowned and successful locksmithing and security screen business, Eddie Williams and his wife, Min, maintain an endearing sense of humor towards their profession. “I think we’ve just about seen it all. We’ve come to the rescue of someone dressed as Bo Peep who had locked themselves out of the house at 4am. There are the repeat offenders who call twice in less than 24 hours, and sometimes we even have customers offering all kinds of weird and wonderful things as payment for our services, which of course, we decline. No, we don’t want your 1995 Motorola phone or the broken desk fan in your garage”, laugh Eddie and Min. After hitting the glass ceiling professionally and financially, Eddie established his own business in 2007 with a small loan from his mother. Since then, Eddie Williams Locksmiths has prospered; although Min explains

that operating a 24/7 service has its challenges. “It can be tiring, but we’re always grateful for what we have and never lament on what we don’t have. Complaining about being busy is a big no-no, especially in such a tough economic climate.” Eddie Williams Locksmiths offers a complete locksmithing service to residential, commercial and automotive as well as the supply, manufacture and installation of made-to-measure security screen windows, doors and a glazing service. Eddie’s approach to business is not about parting his clients with their money, but to deliver the required result at the most competitive price. “If we can’t meet your needs, we’ll refer you to another professional who can.” A career highlight for Eddie and Min was the afternoon they stood across the road from their current 55 McLeod Street premises to admire their new sign

writing and fleet of service vehicles. “We were amazed at how far we’d come in such a short time”, remembers Min. “I was so proud, but poor Eddie was slightly uncomfortable at the sight of his name plastered everywhere”, she laughs. Eddie, Min and their valued team are committed to providing professional, prompt, friendly and affordable security solutions with a can-do attitude. Their advice to fellow business owners is: “Protect your name and reputation; it’s the biggest asset your business hasespecially in Cairns where word of mouth is the foundation of success.” So next time you find yourself locked out of car, home or in need of superior security services, don’t panic, simply call Eddie Williams Locksmiths, A.K.A ‘The Lock Doctor’ on 0402 442 092 or visit www. eddiewilliamslocksmiths.com.au

HEALTH MANAGEMENT

it can be difficult to navigate the minefield of food information overload, but mitch and Rebecca of health management are not your typical dietitians and will show you how to sort out the good information from the not so good. Dietitian… sounds so boring doesn’t it? Well Mitch and Rebecca are anything but boring and while they are foodies at heart for them, it is more than just food, it’s about a healthy lifestyle while still being able to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Whether it be weight loss, weight gain, sports or anything else nutrition related, Mitch and Rebecca cover it all with their attitude to a healthy lifestyle. At Health Management, based in Cairns North, Innisfail and Ingham, the fully accredited team can help you get back on track and stay there, with a personalised meal plan that works within your busy lifestyle. Mitch thrives on helping people reach their goals. “I think I get more satisfaction out of my clients nutrition or weight success then they actually do sometimes,” says Mitch who is also an accredited sports

dietitian. Rebecca is all about the ‘how of eating’ and has a passion in working with bariatric nutrition and eating disorders. “I am a huge believer that we should eat everything in moderation and rarely would I tell someone they can never have a particular food again,” says Rebecca. “I think there are many dietitians out there that think of food just in calories, however there is so much more to life than just counting calories,” she adds. Both Mitch and Rebecca agree that ‘fad diets’ are their biggest frustration. “Sure a fad diet will get the weight off fast, but it will always come back to bite you on the backside when you finish and jump straight back into old habits,” they explain. “We work with most people fortnightly,” says Mitch. “Seeing us often gives them

someone to be accountable to.” The team also cater to amateur athletes and teams, weekend warriors, through to elite athletes, such as the Cairns Taipans and the Northern Pride. Artist

of the month

Boissevain Who are you and what do you do? I am a self-taught artist (painter) who works with a wide range of mediums. I also have my own gallery, UnderArt Gallery, in Spence St, where I share my space with many other local artists. Why do you do what you do? I am absolutely passionate about art and creating anything new. I love the diversity and endless imagination of other artists, which is why I opened UnderArt Gallery almost four years ago. How do you work? Usually on three or five different projects at a time, as many works are very layered and take a lot of time. I work in a great, dedicated space (actually I pinched my husband’s shed while he was away fishing) on our rural property near Gordonvale. Here I am isolated from the outside world. I have my music and very often a glass of champagne or red wine nearby – it’s when some of my best work is created. What’s your background? A very interesting youth, with an eccentric, entrepreneurial father and wellbalanced mother have made me who I am. I have evolved through persistence and always curious to experiment with new concept and mediums. What’s integral to the work of an artist? To be unique and challenge your own ability at all times and to be proud and happy with the end result. What work do you most enjoying doing? At present I am addicted to anything to do with resin, gold and silver leaf and mixed media – the ideas are endless and the days too short. What jobs have you done other than being an artist? Strangely enough I have never had a job since the day I left school! I have always successfully managed to make a living from creating something out of nothing and that is the ultimate. Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it? Artistic life can be very lonely, but not for myself. Most of the time artists work in isolation, which I actually look forward to. The rest of the time I am interacting with potential buyers (in my gallery) who give honest feedback, often without them knowing I am the artist. I like it this way so you know their comments are sincere. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? To step outside your comfort zone and experiment. A quote that I love and describes my attitude to life is, ‘even if you think you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there’. What’s your goal? Personally to keep painting interesting contemporary works that continue to be bought and appreciated by many and sent worldwide. Business-wise, to continue supporting other artists and growing UnderArt gallery into a place that people will visit over and over again as there is always something new and interesting.

DesSPENCER

PORT

Who are you and what do you do? I am a devoted husband and father to three kids, Josh, Hayley and Sophie. My family means the world to me and we have had some amazing adventures together travelling to different places in the world where I have had exhibitions of my art. I have been a professional artist for the past 26 years. I have had galleries in Port Douglas for the past 13 years. For 11 years my gallery was in the foyer of the Sheraton Mirage, then two years ago I moved into a larger location on Macrossan St opposite Coles. How long have you been working in Port Douglas? I commute daily to Port Douglas from Cairns. It really is one of the most scenic drives, not only in this country, but in the world. I do consider Port Douglas as my second home as I am there seven days a week. What has inspired you to do this in Port Douglas? I am continually inspired by the natural beauty of my environment and the strong tropical light. North Queensland is an artist’s paradise. What do you like the most about the paradise where you live? I adore the village ambience of Port Douglas. There is a real vibe in Macrossan Street. I value the friendships with the Port Douglas locals and the community spirit. I also enjoy the fact that I can walk down the road and there are world-class restaurants. Describe a real-life situation that inspired you? That is hard to pin down as I am continually inspired by the stunning natural environment in Far North Queensland. One of the most memorable situations was in Florida 10 years ago. A collector had invited me to his three-story beachside estate in Florida to create art for his home during my stay. This experience gave me insights into the rewards that hard work can provide and since then I have devoted myself to creating art that I am passionate about and that people also want to collect and enjoy daily in their homes. What’s your most embarrassing moment? Two years ago I was invited to be the artist in residence onboard Royal Carribean’s cruise ship, Radiance of the Seas for their inaugural trip from Hawaii to Sydney. There was a very short lead in time for this cruise

Shop 7,18 Macrossan St, opposite Coles Port Douglas 0414971591

101

CairnsLife

to create the art and my wife and I had to take all the paintings with us on the plane to Honolulu. It wasn’t until halfway through the cruise that I realised that in one of my Sydney paintings I had not completed painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I had put in the road but hadn’t completed the famous bridge, which was completely missing. I was very red faced and wondered how many people had noticed this glaring mistake. What jobs have you done other than being an artist? My first job was a truck driver. Then my wife and I moved to Mt Isa where I worked underground in the mines for a few years before returning to Brisbane to join my wife’s family’s trucking business. I drove trucks and taught myself to paint at night. Then I started on my art journey by taking the plunge and travelling across the country selling my art at Farming Field days and country shows around Australia before coming to Cairns for three months in 1992. We never looked back and have lived here ever since. What’s your strongest memory of your childhood? I grew up in Gailes, Ipswich, a blue collar area. I can remember sitting on a boulder at my primary school when I was about 12, chatting to my mate about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I told him that I wanted to be famous and travel the world. He laughed at me and told me I was a dreamer. I have travelled the world and many people now know about me and my art so I guess the message here is ‘dream big’, believe in yourself and always work towards your goals. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Being dyslexic (but undiagnosed at the time), the guidance officer at my school informed me that I would never amount to much in my life. Thinking about this conversation has always inspired me to succeed in my art career. A strong belief in myself along with persistence and equal doses of determination and stubbornness has seen me always working to improve. What wouldn’t you do without? I couldn’t do without the love and support of my wife and three children. They keep me grounded and have always supported me.

Return

TO SENDER

There is nothing more beautiful than watching a dog run to its owner. ears back, tongue flapping and that look of complete devotion as they return to their masters side. for many people this harmonic scene is nothing more than a dream. Removing the lead is the easy part! Why do some dogs ignore their owner’s frantic calls and how can we work towards solving the problem?

Basic control should begin at home. Teach your dog to FOCUS on you and ignore distractions. Food is a wonderful motivator but some dogs can also be trained using a favourite toy or by simply using physical and verbal reward. Put your dog on lead, praise when they make eye contact and encourage them to follow. Practise this exercise every day, in many cases the dog that runs away from its owner has never learnt to look to that person for direction. Training should then progress to onlead work away from home. Repetition and consistency are the two most crucial factors in any training process. Until you have total confidence in your dog’s response to “COME” they should be kept on lead at all times. Long-line

training involves using a lead which is longer and lighter than the conventional dog leash. This allows the dog freedom to explore whilst the owner can enforce the recall command from longer distances. Reward them for returning to you and then allow them to go back to the activity they were enjoying. Never chastise your dog for running away, as the last thing they will remember is returning to you and then being disciplined. If you open the gate and your dog races blindly up the road, ensure the dog is restrained BEFORE you open the gate. Off-lead control is relevant in every situation, around the home as well as in open spaces. Attending an obedience class will enable you to learn and practise commands

105

CairnsLife

in various off-lead situations. All of the skills that are practised in the class situation can then be utilised in your everyday interaction with your dog. Dogs are willing to follow a leader who is calm, consistent, confident and kind. For thousands of years men and woman have worked closely with dogs without the use of collars and leads. This fact alone should have us questioning the relationship we have with our dogs in the modern world.

Sustainable Living

INCREASED COST OF LIVING

- a problem with a sustainable solution

Sophie Barrett - green at heart Australians have been through a hard time financially for the past few years and this has been partially due to the GFC and the rising prices of electricity and resources which have meant an increase in the cost of living. This has seen a paradigm shift in the view of sustainability from a feel good endeavour to one of necessity. Our homes are one of our largest expenses and substantial savings can be achieved in reducing energy and water costs while having the added benefit of improving the comfort of our homes and helping the environment. A win-win situation for all. There are many low cost ways in which a home can be renovated to reduce power bills and increase comfort. The top 10 include: •Insulating your ceiling and ventilating the roof space to reduce the need for air conditioning •Shading windows with external awnings or planting trees to shade east and west walls •Tinting windows to reduce heat gain •Replacing energy hungry halogen lighting or old style fluorescent lights with LED or efficient fluorescent lights •Removing non-structural internal walls that block breeze paths •Installing fully openable windows such as louvres •Switching your pool and hot water system to the off peak tariff •Buying the highest star rating appliances you

can afford to make future savings •Installing a rainwater tank to save up to 100,000L per annum •Investing in energy efficient technology such as solar panels, solar hot water and solar ACs How you use your home is also important including having an awareness of the local climate so that you can live during the day in the northern areas of your home, open windows to take advantage of summer breezes from the north east and south east and ensure that there are adequate opportunities for cross ventilation. It can also be beneficial to flush out heat gained during the day by opening windows in the early evening. There are a lot of passionate people working in the area of sustainability in Far North Queensland who can offer advice on how to best design and renovate your home to make it more sustainable and many of them are featured in this guide. Another great place to find local expertise is the Tropical Green Building Network (www.tgbn.org.au), a local group with members from Council, private companies and the community who network together on sustainable building and design. Sophie Barrett of green at heart is a National award winning sustainable building designer and author of the CAfNeC guide: Retrofitting your home for sustainability – a guide for far North Queensland available for download at www.greenatheart.com.au or www.cafnec.org.

Sustainable Living YOUR

Swimming Pool

PURIFIED BY NATURE Chlorine is used in most pools, and more and more people, especially children, have developed allergies and eye or ear irritations from some of these chemicals. Besides any chemicals obviously interacting with our health, we all feel the ongoing maintenance expenses burdening our hip pocket. Imagine swimming in a pool with the water quality of a mountain stream: no chemical additives, just the simple elegance of pure water. Imagine not having to leave the comfort of your home to swim in a pristine rainforest rock pool or natural creek like Crystal Cascades, surrounded by luscious plants and a multitude of birds and insects - the ultimate environmentally responsible and sustainable sanctum for your senses and your spirit. Today’s state-of-the-art natural

Traditional swimming pools are run with a substantial amount of chemical additives to keep the water clear, healthy and free from algae and other impurities.

filtration pools can achieve just that and more by combining Bio-Mimicry with high-technology to re-create nature’s own way of producing healthy and crystal clear water. Micro-organisms are one of the key players in natural waters: they create a natural bio-film that steadily eliminates contaminants from water and keep the biological balance. Aided by water’s natural submission to gravity, guiding it to flow through water plants and layers of various natural media like rocks, pebbles and sand, natural filtration occurs. In fact, Natural pool’s breakdown contaminates such as sunscreen and urine that even chemical pool cant. It is now possible to create a formal or free form swimming pool with integrated or adjacent water gardens doubling as filtration beds. You can even upgrade

your existing pool. As in nature, Natural pools are biologically balanced, bringing the refreshing energy of mountain water and a whole lot more bio diversity into your own garden. No more chlorine or other chemicals, no more contributing to urban salinity every time you backwash your pool. Save power, save and re-use water on your garden as the nutrient rich water provides favourable results for an entire ecosystem in your backyard. Save up to 80% on your pool maintenance costs, and have the system pay for itself within reasonably timeframes. A natural, ‘healthy’ pool that’s filtered by plants rather than chemicals is better for everyone – animals, people and the environment. After a swimming experience in one of these you most likely never want to go back to a chlorinated pool. 100% Nature in your own backyard.

Create paradise in your own backyard The EcoSplashTM System

Award‐winning technology uses Bio‐Mimicry for your pool: replicating nature to produce crystal clear water.

“Powering Perfection” ALL ELECTRICAL WORK Domestic, Commercial, Industrial

Allan Willmot of Willmot Smash Repair Specialists (WSRS) has been in business for more than 35 years servicing Cairns and surrounding areas with high-quality panel repairs while using the best environmentally sustainable practices available in the industry. In 1997, the repair facility on Newell St was refurbished with environmentally friendly practices in mind. Allan contacted the Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTAQ) to commence a Green Stamp audit on the shop achieving a rate of 74 per cent with standards that had a been in place since 1997. Seeing the need to have better sustainable environmental procedures, Allan persisted with the remaining 26 per cent, resulting in the highest-achieving body shop in the MTAQ Green Stamp Accreditation Program – a joint initiative with the Australian Government. “We are committed to continuing to be the most environmentally sustainable body shop in the industry,” he says. Allan also has put his hand up to help advise other Cairns body shops as they attain their Green Stamp Accreditation with the MTAQ and Australian Government for the betterment of the region.

Sometimes our house requirements increase when we start having a family of our own. As a young couple you may have been living in a 2 bedroom unit before having the kids and find you have to upsize to a 3 or 4 bedroom home to allow space for the family to grow. Building a new, larger family home minimises the maintenance costs over the time the family is expanding. It also lets us plan the design to cater for the change in our family’s needs. Other may find they are now ‘empty nesters’ because the kids have all grown up and started their own families. I know a lot families where Mum and Dad still have the large house that screams for lots of fix ups and maintenance and of course, lots of cleaning. As we get a little older the last thing we want to do is spend all weekend cleaning the house and doing the gardening. Most people still want their own private and secure space so a good option is to build a smaller home, on a smaller block of land. A smaller home has much lower day to day running costs and can leave you time and money to do the things you didn’t have time for when you were busy raising the family. The more space you have the more stuff you find to fill it up!!

TIME TO

YOUR HOME? everyone’s living requirements vary as we adjust to our continually changing lifestyle and family. Statistics show that we tend to move homes on an average of every 5 years which reflects the changes in our family’s needs.

Its worth looking at what is important to each of us in our current family requirements and whether our home is able to cope with any changes. If not, maybe you should be looking for a home that will cope with those changes for more than 5 years. Most new homes (if looked after well) will be at least 10 years before any major maintenance is required. There are some great subdivisons in and around Cairns with fantastic facilities like walking and bicycle trails, parks, gardens, BBQs and more. Ask around some of the new estates and see what combinations of land sizes are available and you may be surprised what’s on offer.

CHILD

VISA o p t i o n s One group of visas in the family stream is the child visas which include visa options for dependent children, adopted children, stepchildren, and orphan relatives. There are three visa types for children wishing to migrate to Australia: • Child visas: for the dependent child of the Australian sponsor • Adoption visas: for a child adopted overseas by the Australian sponsor • Orphan relative visa: for a child who is under 18 years at the time of application and who cannot be cared for by either parent. There is also a temporary visa for dependent children of temporary partner visa holding parents. This visa enables such children to be added to their parent’s permanent partner visa application. An applicant for a child visa must be the child, adopted child or stepchild

Australia’s migration Program has two main components – the skilled stream and the family stream. The family migration stream offers visa options to reunite Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens with their close family members. of an Australian citizen, a holder of a permanent visa or an eligible New Zealand citizen, and must be sponsored by that parent or that parent’s current partner. The applicant must be under 25 years of age. An applicant who has turned 18 must be a full-time student and financially dependent on the parent supporting the application. The child must not be married, engaged to be married or living in a de facto relationship. For the Adoption visa, the child must be under 18 years of age and must be sponsored by their adoptive parent or their prospective adoptive parent. The Adoption visa is for a child who is outside Australia and who has been adopted or is in the process of being adopted by an Australian citizen, a holder of a permanent visa or an eligible New Zealand citizen. In most cases the

adoption must have the prior approval of an Australian state or territory adoption authority. An applicant for an Orphan Relative visa must be under 18, single, and have no parents to care for them because their parents are deceased, permanently incapacitated or of unknown whereabouts. The child must have an Australian relative who is their brother, sister, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew. The Australian relative (or relatives partner) must sponsor the child and they must be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen and must be settled in Australia. For further information and eligibility you should seek the assistance of a Registered Migration Agent who can give advice and guidance on the right visa application for you.
