Welcome October, Yes it is still spring, even though it feels like summer arrived last month. Hot, hot, hot is the weather and our bumper edition. This month is an honour for me to present our cover story of self-made success story Calanna Pharmacy, which started with humble beginnings and has continued to grow to the leading, family-run pharmaceutical group it is today. We caught up with Mario Calanna, who spilt the beans on why the business has continued to expand when others are downsizing. Last month we profiled leading ladies in the legal industry, so this issue it’s time for the men in law. We’ve selected four local firms and a line up of professional men, each with their individual stories to tell. We’ve also featured Men in Real Estate, meeting with the industry kingpins and inspiring men who make up the game. And we haven’t forgotten the ladies, with our Women in Retail feature, which offers a talented artist, passionate foodie and two fashionistas. Have a great month.

HUMBLE By Danae Jones

BEGINNINGS THE Calanna Pharmacy Group now has nine pharmacy locations throughout Queensland - in Cairns (4), Innisfail (1), Townsville (3) and the Gold Coast (1), with plans afoot for many more. A recent large investment in the expansion of their anchor pharmacy at Woree on Mulgrave Road is just the tip of the iceberg for what they have planned. The pharmacy site at Woree now has three additional consulting rooms including a naturopath and a sleep apnoea clinic with unique in-house diagnostic tools such as Nutricheck, Bio Impedance Analysis and Hemaview services. “These tools can make the world of difference in determining the cause of many problems. The Nutricheck for example can tell you what nutrients your body needs and the Hemaview can give you a full blood analysis with just the prick of your finger. It’s quick and easy and tells a very accurate story about a person’s health which means we can treat them much more holistically instead of just filling their script,” said Mario. The Calanna Pharmacy Group is very much a family affair with Mario’s children Matthew (a pharmacist) and Catherine (a natural health consultant) working in the business with him and his wife Linda considered very much the backbone of the business and the family since it all began.

The Calanna name is synonymous in the pharmaceutical industry - leading the charge with combined natural and mainstream medicines for over 37 years. While other companies are downsizing, the Calanna Pharmacy Group has entered an expansion phase. We caught up with Mario Calanna to find out the secret to his success.

“They (my son and daughter) both work with me in the pharmacies and have grown up with Dad mixing lotions and potions to treat people’s illnesses their whole lives. They really live it and breathe it and love every minute of what they do. Matthew is really the business minded one out of the two and he has grand plans for taking the Calanna Pharmacy brand far and wide. He believes in what I have started and wants to make a real difference in healthcare throughout our communities.” “We differ from other pharmacies in that we provide affordable integrated solutions that are customised to people’s needs. No one customer’s condition is the same, everyone is different and so they need personalised treatments. Matthew and Catherine want to see this type of pharmaceutical methodology expanded upon. So all I can say is watch this space, no doubt there will be more Calanna Pharmacies,” he says smiling. When asked why they decided to expand now, Mario Calanna simply says the increasingly unhealthy population is what has driven the expansion and their strong commitment to provide integrated and targeted solutions that achieve long term results. “There is no doubt that the steep rise in chronic diseases – heart disease, diabetes and cancer is of concern to us. We see more people

12

CairnsLife

presenting with these diseases in our community every day. Our desire is to prevent our customers from getting these diseases. We want people to come to us not only when they are crook, but when they are well so we can prevent disease and manage their health. The Calanna Pharmacy Group boasts a very loyal following that continues to grow. Some local families have had generations upon generations being treated by the Calanna team. “I opened the Woree pharmacy back in 1976, it was our first ever pharmacy and it was built on what used to be the old cane farm and family home site where I grew up in. It holds deep sentimental value to us. Many of those customers that first came to me back in 1976 are still coming here. They have since had kids and those kids have grown up and have had their own kids, and the entire family now comes to us for health care and advice. That level of following is heartening for us and it makes you want to get up in the morning and make a difference in people’s lives,” he said. An official opening of the newly expanded Woree Pharmacy site will take place next month. To mark the momentous occasion a celebration for all customers, suppliers and team members will take place on 12 October.

andrew thornton Elite Real Estate

Andrew’s energetic, professional approach has this real estate up and comer making his mark on the industry. Growing up in Cairns, Andrew’s love of property was a forgone conclusion, having been introduced to the industry through his father’s building company. Property and building design were a constant in his life from an early age – and he loved it. With this love of property, Andrew was destined to succeed when he made the decision to turn his passion for property into a career. After a seven-year career with a leading airline, Andrew decided the time was perfect for a move and his dream became a reality, when he joined the ELITE Cairns team at Edge Hill. “It was an easy transition into real estate because I could use my high level of customer service and people skills,” tells the enthusiastic agent, who confesses to loving everything about real estate. “The ELITE brand has a great reputation and I wanted to start at the top because there’s no other place to be.” After only six months Andrew has already made his mark on the industry, promptly selling properties that had previously been difficult to sell. “I understand what it takes to get the property ready for sale on any budget and it’s a team effort between myself and the client. I listen to them and guide them and make sure they feel included in the process,” explains Andrew. Proving a leading company, encouraging atmosphere and modern approach is a formula for success, Andrew plans on being a market leader when it comes to servicing clients and providing professional advice. “The old school approach to selling real estate is no longer relevant. Today’s consumers expect a high level of service,” tells Andrew. “I will be the market leader for unit and house sales in Cairns, my clients will get my 110 per cent commitment and service.” Greg Clyde-Smith, principal of ELITE Cairns, endorses sentiments from Andrew’s clients when he says, “Andrew is a thoroughly professional, dedicated salesman. His refreshing, energetic approach is a fabulous asset to ensure his success. Andrew’s outstanding success reflects his attitude and determination”. Steve Cordenos Real Estate From grassroots beginnings working for his family business in Mareeba to an awardwinning career in Real Estate in Cairns, Steve Cordenos’s star is shining bright. Steve’s career in real estate spans an impressive 24 years and is dotted with numerous awards in recognition of his talent and contribution to real estate in Cairns. After nabbing a spot as a REIQ Salesperson of the Year finalist in 2003, the selfemployed real estate king pin has won the award three years in a row and in recognition of this monstrous feat, was inducted into the REIQ Hall of Fame in 2007. “I’m absolutely proud of it,” tells the experienced agent. “It’s one of the proudest times of my life, and the accolades and support from my peers was one of the major highlights in winning the awards.” With a whopping $650 million in sales to his name so far, it’s not hard to see why he has earned a sound reputation and accumulated an impressive CV, but after 16 years working for other companies, Steve branched out on his own eight years ago, trading under Steve Cordenos Real Estate. “I’ve worked for big companies within excess of 65 salespeople, but now with the assistance of my PA, we do the lot,” says Steve, who is based at Paradise Palms with an office overlooking the immaculate Golf Course. “I sell anything from units to houses, land, farms and industrial property. I don’t just cover one facet of the market.” Over his impressive career, he has gained experience in all aspects of real estate, from project management, high-rise apartments, residential sub-divisions, project branding, internal design and promotional materials in addition to special development projects and general real estate in Cairns. Notable projects include the pristine Paradise Palms Resort and Country Club, award-winning ‘The Keys’ Apartments at Kewarra Beach and ‘Royal Harbour’ Units above the Night Markets, to name a few. Despite his success, his boutique business is based on three basic yet crucial pillars. “I’ve built my business around honesty, trust and personalised service,” tells Steve. His knowledge and experience with 24 years’ in the industry has certainly helped as well. “I pride myself on negotiating and achieving top dollar for my clients” Like most industry experts, Steve says now is the time to buy, particularly if the Aquis Barrier Reef Resort project is approved. “If it gets approved, it will bring a serious amount of people and money to the region and put Cairns on the map. It will also bring many other developers to Cairns and within five years the price of real estate could double,” Steve predicts. To contact Steve Cordenos Real Estate, phone 0418 774 994.

Men In REAL ESTATE

Why did you get into real estate and how long have you been in the industry? It was at the time that I sold my business that I had started from the ground up. I was having a few months off and was looking at what to do next. After having several experiences with my investment properties with different agencies I could see I could make a difference in real estate.

approach. The business sources its leads virtually exclusively by ‘word-of-mouth’ and I am personally highly appreciative to all of our clients. We are not constrained by the corporate guidelines, policies and procedures of the larger firms. Integrity is key and remembering at all times that you are engaged by the seller and you work for the seller. We take the time to achieve and set the market price.

When and why did you decide to open your own business? It didn’t even take one year. After being involved in professional sales for such a long period and running my own businesses in the past it was bound to be a natural progression. My first position in real estate was the principal licensee of a boutique firm on the beachfront of Palm Cove. I then worked briefly as a sales rep for a major franchise firm. I learnt very little from either.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Selling would be the number one. The best sales are the special ones where you have worked the property for an extended period of time. The seller has remained faithful and worked with you finding the right price and the buyer is absolutely excited about their purchase. That is when you know you have done your job.

How has the business evolved from when you first opened until now? I was well aware it would take two to three years to get established and the sales successes were on the board, however who was to know what was coming next in the global markets and the flow on effects for our beautiful regional town. Our business is fortunate enough to be able to react quickly to avoid the pitfalls that have seen even some large firms shut their doors. How is Premium Property Specialists different to other real estate companies? We are a boutique agency offering a personal service with no-nonsense consultative selling

Do you have a career highlight? Selling the Lions Den Hotel south of Cooktown at a time where financing for remote properties was exceptionally difficult. Other highlights have been Gecko’s Backpackers, a magnificent waterfront Lake Tinaroo property and an Australian film starlet’s home in Smithfield. Do you have any plans for the business to grow or change? There is no question that the market has turned in the short term over the past nine months. Should the international situation remain relatively stable and the local council, State and Federal Governments ensure that the tourism venture at Yorkeys Knob moves forward, there will be expansion opportunities for all small business.

Edmonton Business & Industry Park

Alan Savina isn’t your typical real estate figure, but his contribution and vision for the market and the economy is certainly worth recognition. January 29, 2013 was a memorable day for third generation cane farmer Alan Savina of Pregno Family Investments and director of the Edmonton Business & Industry Park (EBIP). His vision of a business park rising from the Edmonton cane fields was going to come to life after approval by local council for a masterplanned development spanning more than 25 years. “It was a very exciting time for us and meant we could open for business and get some key players on board,” tells EBIP Administration Manager Meredith Gardiner, who has been part of the project since 2008. The approved site for the EBIP is set on 212ha of cane fields along the Bruce Hwy in the Cairns Southern Corridor, an area expected to have a significant population boom in the coming years with the development of the Mount Peter area.

“Alan believes economic development and the creation of an employment centre are the main drivers for the development. In creating a business and industry hub, he considers his role as a facilitator for bringing local and national businesses together, rather than a property developer,” explains Meredith. “There are two reasons why Alan is creating the EBIP. Firstly, to leave a legacy for his family and secondly, to create a business precinct that will be of great benefit to Cairns as the city expands.” Over the next 25 years, the project is set to generate 4000 jobs for the region, ease congestion heading into the city by creating jobs in the south and offer key industries and showrooms in the southern suburbs to all the residents of Cairns. “The EBIP will be focused on business and industry uses such as big box retail,

industry and light commerce. We also have a preliminary approval for a 250bed hospital and associated medical facilities,” explains Meredith. “The development also includes two district level sports fields and barbecue areas along Blackfellow Creek, which runs through the centre of the development and will create a green, healthy and active place to work.” Approval for the operational works plans is expected by end of October 2013. In 2014, they will begin marketing for tenants. Securing long term leases and sales will place the company in a position to call for tenders for earthworks for Stages 1 and 2. With plans to commence operational works in 2015, the EBIP will benefit the people of Cairns for generations to come. To find out more, go to www.ebip.com.au or phone 4041 6228.

Having been in the real estate industry for 8 years, Kev Twomey is in many respects is a new comer. He has however received numerous industry accolades in what is a highly prosperous sales career. With a background in Education and then insurance, his start in real estate was more of a lucky coincidence then a well thought out plan. “My brother was offered a job in Real Estate and he didn't want to take it, so I asked him if it was alright if I went for it instead!” “Looking back on my start in Real Estate, like anyone I guess, I sort of stumbled and fumbled my way through it. I actually shared a computer with a colleague when I started out. My boss at the time said “if you are still here in 3 months, I'll be happy for you. Fortunately hard work and a strong resilience has helped my cause”, Kev says. Real Estate is a notoriously difficult industry but Kev has persevered. Strangely enough when the market softened, his sales figures increased.

“There are always buyers and sellers, and matching them has turned out to be something I have a knack for. With an average time on market of 21 days, the accidental agent of 2005 seems like a reflection in the rear view mirror,” Kev says with a smile. Kev was the RE/MAX salesperson of the year for 2012 and made regular appearances on the national Top Ten list, culminating in being ranked 79th Internationally for figures written for the first half of 2013. “It's fantastic to be recognised amongst so many agents and I know it is a great achievement, but it's not what really drives me. I like achieving good results – when I sell a house for a record breaking price that is something that I get really excited about. The vendors are always elated and you just get this huge buzz from a job well done; ultimately that is far more exciting than any award.

And to be fair real estate is about what you can do for someone today, not about beating your chest with yesterday's achievements.” When real estate stops and Kev's not working, he likes to spend time with his wife and friends. “I'm actually a bit of a recluse; wearing a suit and attending functions are something I generally like to avoid. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and there's nothing better than kicking back with a beer or two and admiring the scenery. I guess that is one of the great things about selling real estate in Cairns.” With his humble approach to life and his driven attitude towards his work, it is easy to understand why Kev has performed so well in recent years. RE/MAX Cairns principal Tony Williamson said he proud of Kev's achievements given the tough market. “Knowing how motivated Kevin is I've no doubt in my mind that the best is still to come and I always enjoy watching our outstanding achievers reach for new heights” he said.

Cairns Beaches Realty

Being thrown into the real estate game at a young age has seen this self-taught young gun come out on top. Luke kick started his career when his parents, Paul and Pauline Bantoft, decided to open their own real estate agency in 2000, encouraging their youngest son, a fresh-faced Luke, to come on board as the property manager. “We started from scratch. It was my job to build up the rent roll, but I had no idea what that was at the time! I was 17 and just finished high school and I didn’t know a thing about real estate,” remembers Luke, who was thrown in the deep end and forced to sink or swim. “I went door knocking, basically asking people to give me your property and see if I can sell it. If not, you don’t have to pay me, but just give me a go.” Word of mouth spread and the little business grew from humble beginnings starting with nothing to managing more than 300 properties from Smithfield to Palm Cove. “I grew up at the beaches and my focus is here because I’m very knowledgeable in the area and can pass on my knowledge to my clients,” tells the self-taught agent, whose favourite suburb is Clifton Beach. After eight years, Paul handed the reigns over to Luke, pursuing his passion in property development land sales and is currently the main man at Oceans Edge Estate Palm Cove and making Luke the youngest real estate principal in Queensland. Luke, who thrives under pressure, was happy to take on the challenge. “I don’t know any different. I’ve worked here for 13 years and my staff are my family,” says Luke, confessing he gives a lot of himself to the business and is on call 24/7. In the little spare time he does have, he is giving back to the community with private, Catholic organisation Rosie’s Kitchen, which feeds the homeless every Friday and Saturday night. “It’s a reality check of how lucky I am and a token of my appreciation,” says Luke, who is also interested in politics. “I also helped to put in the pedestrian crossing out the front of the office and I’m pushing the local and state government to landscape north of the Captain Cook Hwy.” This community spirit and genuine friendliness extends to his clients at Cairns Beaches Realty, which he forms close relationships with. “We’re really one on one and all the buyers and sellers end up as friends. My biggest satisfaction is meeting different people and dealing with clients,” tells Luke, who is continually seeking new rental properties at the beaches. KRISTIN BERARDI by Eva Conley

After a massive year of amazing jazz performers, Tanks Arts Centre brings to a close its 2013 Jazz Up North series program with a special concert by vocalist and composer Kristin Berardi. Kristin is no stranger to Far North Queensland, or Tanks for that matter, but her forthcoming performance in October promises something different.

approach. It is usually different to your own. It is also usually a lot of fun.” Taking out the International Vocal Competition launched Kristin’s career into the professional spectrum. Since then she has won a swag of awards, including first place at the National Freedman Fellowship and a Bell Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. She also took out the National Jazz Award for Voice at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival last year. The recognition she has garnered through her solo work and collaborations has earned her a solid following both in Australia and overseas. She says the first accolade – the International Vocal Competition - really made a difference for her career. “I had moved to Sydney and could not get a gig for nearly eight months, then I got this recognition from overseas and suddenly venues and festivals considered my emails and recordings,” Kristin says. “It was a huge help. Just moving from being a number or one of many, many musicians trying to get some work and further their career, to then being a number with a name.” Going off of the glowing reviews she receives, it’s evident the work she does just keeps getting better and better. Her ‘warmth and incredible vocal control’ appeals to music lovers of any genre. She is no longer living in Sydney, but has settled in southern Queensland and between gigs Kristin now also teaches at the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music and juggles motherhood to two children. She actually grew up in North Queensland and says returning is always something she looks forward to. “Whenever I am further North, I feel like I am home,” she says. “I relax a little more. The space, the cane… the heat – I will always be a North Queenslander at my core.” Kristin Berardi performs at the final show for the 2013 Jazz Up North series at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 25 October. The 2014 series will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Montreux Jazz Festival’s International Vocal Competition winner has performed at Tanks previously and says it is a great place to play. “It’s a pretty amazing place, given that you can literally be doing any size ensemble and it works there,” she says. “It’s just a really cool place. So unique, so wonderful that it’s been reformed into something to do with the arts – something that keeps giving back to the community in a positive way. It’s also got amazing equipment – the sound gear is amazing, as are the sound technicians. It’s a real treat I think for performers to get to play there.” Kristin has experience performing under different guises on the Tanks’ stage. “The other times I’ve performed there have been in totally different formats,” she says. “Once with guitarist James Sherlock (as we have a duo ‘thing’) and the other performance was with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, promoting the album I did with them. So basically two opposites, with two people and then with 19 people! This one will be with my band – a total of five people.” The band – Greg Coffin (piano), Carl Morgan (guitar), Alex Boneham (bass) and Tim Firth (drums) – have just joined Kristin on recording a new album, due for release next year. She’ll be showcasing some of these new songs at the Cairns concert. Kristin also always harks back to her beginnings and the repertoire will feature some old jazz standards. Kristin has also been busy recording other albums. She has recently completed another duo project with James Sherlock, which she hopes will hit the shelves by Christmas. Collaborations have been a big part of her career, something that she enjoys immensely. “It is challenging as it moves you into directions or areas that you wouldn’t go to perhaps on your own,” she says. “It encourages growth as you may find areas you need to work on, and it pushes you to make the music ‘make sense’ and to blend with others style or

Amazing Lifestyle Results with Face Today

When I look at my before and after photo’s I can still clearly remember how I felt when I weighed my heaviest. During my first pregnancy, I gained 35kgs which I never managed to completely lose. At the end of my second pregnancy, I weighed in at a whopping 32kgs heavier after the birth. From this time I constantly felt exhausted, grumpy, depressed and basically not a very happy person to be around. This was very unlike the woman I was before the pitter patter of little feet. It is especially unlike the woman I have become today after being on the amazing journey with the Face Today Community Health & Wellness Challenge. Before the challenge I can recall countless hours slogging it out at the gym and restricting myself to small amounts of food, which was only enough to feed a small child. I thought it was the only way to get my body back. Little did I know that without the correct nutrition, vitamins and minerals my body was not able to function well which is why I was not feeling my best. I also had a lot of toxins which had built up over time and which were happily being stored in my fat. I was working so hard to lose the fat, but it was just not coming off. This is an unfortunate experience for a lot of people

who don’t have the expert guidance from a nutritionist and fitness coach or the knowledge I now have. I was introduced to what I now call my SAVING GRACE by Nicole JacksonBelle, CEO of Face Today Medi Clinic. She has an enormous passion for health, nutrition and anti-ageing. With her encouragement, I flew down to Sydney and that’s where I learnt about nutritional cleansing with a Solution based company called Isagenix. After 30 days on the program I had released 6kgs, I was sleeping better, was less stressed and I felt like I did before all of my weight gain. The months passed and I began to notice numerous positive changes throughout my body. It was at this time we decided to share our newfound secret with our friends, family and clients. Everyone using Isagenix Nutrition began experiencing the same or similar to what I did… weight loss, more energy, better sleep, clearer mind and an overall feeling of wellness. This was in people of all ages. I became pregnant with my 3rd child and this time I had a different outlook about how my body was going to transform with the pregnancy. I only put on 15kgs and felt very confident that when I had finished breastfeeding I would be able to

get my body back. Little did I know that after 5 months I would be 17kgs lighter, fitter, faster, more alert and enjoying life with my children the way I am today. I feel empowered and inspired to share my story and secret with the world. At present we are coaching over 100 everyday women and men, mums and dads, personal trainers, body builders and athletes all to reach their goals of weight loss, better recovery, toning and overall Health and Wellness. We created the concept of the ‘Cairns Community Health and Wellness Challenge’ as our vision is to help as many people in the Cairns and surrounding community to take that first step towards a healthier, happier and lighter life.

After 51 years, Farrellys Lawyers is still going strong. Established in 1962 by Laurie Farrelly, this Cairns-based law firm has been serving the region for five decades. “Laurie was a colourful character well known for his safari suits and interest in Asian culture. When he started his sole practice there were few firms in Cairns,” tells Clem Taft, who went into partnership with Laurie in 1983. “Laurie taught me to focus on being ‘affable, affordable and available’ and I have strived to follow his approach, especially his embrace of the multicultural face of Cairns to this day – minus the safari suit!” 2013 has seen a further step in the evolution of Farrellys, with a new office in Lake Street, and a line up of four solicitors, and an experienced conveyancer, Carmel Scott. Clem, as principal, stresses that Farrellys Lawyers, continues to offer the same practical advice and personalised service to the families of Cairns. “We strive to offer our

clients expert advice in conveyancing, wills and estates, litigation, criminal law and personal injuries.” Clem believes his firm offers the perfect age and gender balance, despite the gender imbalance of graduating law students. “We’re a small general practice firm with two men on the wrong side of 50 and two women on the right side of 30,” laughs Clem. “We have a good mix of life and professional skills,” adds solicitor Tony Smith, who has a preference for commercial law. The two young women are keen to learn everything they can from their mentors. They have good skills in researching answers to unusual and difficult problems. Clem and Tony have no hesitation in recommending the law as a rewarding career. Tony studied as a mature age student and says, “if you are interested in law, regardless of your age or whether you are a man or a woman, I’d

encourage you to get into this interesting career.” Clem’s motivation to practise law has never diminished and he is now serving the children of his original clients. He still enjoys the challenge and variety every working day brings. In fact, he has made a bet with his father-in-law who did not retire until age 75, that he will practice for a year longer at least than he did. He puts his success down to his connection with his clients and his straight-talking approach. This experienced and innovative team focuses on prompt and efficient service during life’s ups and downs. “We’ve been around for 51 years and we’re still going strong,” says Tony. Looking around at the steady hum of productivity in the office, Clem adds, “we’ll be around for another 50 years, too.” Laurie Farrelly would be pleased. Experts. Specialists. Personal Service. Quality Advice. These are the cliché’s that law firms often trot out when describing themselves. The feedback we have seen is that most law firms aren’t hiring and I wanted to offer them an opportunity to succeed, like I was given a start 10 years ago.” Recent JCU law graduates James Harding, Heath Hamilton and Troy Roberts were all offered a chance to get their foot in the door at Property Law Solutions and are making names for themselves through their hard work and dedication. “It’s rare to have driven, focused young guys,” explains Ranjit. “James is a Solicitor who works on Property and Insolvency matters and is known for his excellent customer service. pietro girgenti

Girgenti Lawyers Some people struggle to find their career path until much later in life, but Tablelands-born Pietro Girgenti had his goals set in stone from a young age. He may be one of the youngest in the office, but he also owns the place – and two other branches for that matter – proving hard work and a clear-cut dream are more important than a tally of years behind a desk. “I started Girgenti Lawyers in Mareeba in 2009 with just myself and my secretary. At 24, I was the youngest to open a firm in Queensland, which I’m really proud of,” tells Pietro, who decided to study law at JCU after realising he had a very keen interest in arguing the point. With word of mouth spreading and referrals flooding in, it wasn’t long before Pietro opened a second office on Aplin St in the city centre. “We expanded to an office in Cairns just before our first birthday to attract professional staff and serve clients who didn’t want to travel to Mareeba,” tells the determined, young professional. Over the years, as the company’s glowing reputation and the demand for their services trickled further and further south, the young business was expanding again, finding a third base in the state’s capital earlier this year. “I share my time across all three offices supervising a team of lawyers. I believe the days of having one lawyer struggling to practice in every area of law are gone. With the ever increasing complexity of law we believe to truly be a full service law firm it’s important to have a strong team of lawyers who are each experts in different areas of law,” adds Pietro, who has a keen interest in property and commercial law and believes strongly in the lost art of client service. “People grow weary of lawyers who over promise and under deliver. We take a personal approach and offer detailed solutions.” Managing three offices, maintaining an impeccable level of service and running a company may seem like a busy lifestyle, but Pietro also finds time to give back to his local community. “It’s important for me to be part of and giving back to the community. I’m currently the President of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and a committee member of Rotary FNQ Field Day Committee Inc. and member of the Mareeba Rotary Club,” he explains. The humble, young talent, who was a finalist for Young Manager of the Year at the Australian Institute of Management Excellence Awards in Cairns, may be younger than his employees, but he is proof that ability and determination is the key to success. peter o’connor O’Connor Law

Working with clients to provide legal solutions for their personal and business needs is something Peter is truly passionate about, and for him, proves the old Confucius proverb that if you have a job you love, you never have to work a day in your life. While Peter operates a busy practice at his centrally located Lake St firm, he thoroughly enjoys what he does – although his sights weren’t initially set on the legal industry. “After attending boarding school in Brisbane, I studied commerce and law at the University of Queensland with the idea of becoming an accountant rather than a lawyer,” recalls Peter, who landed a job in his uni holidays at a leading law firm in Brisbane. This led to his admission as a solicitor in 1982, a period of time as a corporate lawyer and commercial/litigation solicitor in a medium Brisbane firm before opening his own firm, O’Connors Solicitors, in Brisbane in 1988. After eight years in his own firm, Peter, his wife and two young children packed up and headed overseas for a six-month escape before being lured to sunny Cairns with the promise of the perfect work/life balance. “My wife, Donna-Maree, was offered a position with Cairns City Council so we moved here in 1997, following which I worked in the financial services industry for four years securing my qualifications as a Certified Financial Planner before heading back to the law. I then worked in a large firm of 30 partners before opening O’Connor Law five years ago when the GFC was in full swing,” says Peter, who saw the timing as a reason to focus not only on his business but the business needs of clients while at the same time enjoying the autonomy of owning his own firm in this idyllic location. “I have practised in almost every area of law in the past 30 years, but I have always enjoyed the business world. As I have a real interest in tax, business and estate planning and superannuation coupled with my financial planning qualifications I have been able to bring this interest and knowledge to the legal services we provide to clients.” With his financial and legal background, his boutique firm offers expert legal services in the areas of commercial law, property, corporate, business succession planning, superannuation, wills and estate planning. “O’Connor Law has four female lawyers and each has their own specialty areas. It’s a good balance,” tells Peter, who enjoys a spot of golf when time permits. “It’s unusual to have one man and seven women in total, but it’s just the way it has evolved.” Today, the five lawyer line-up strives to provide legal services that puts clients first and achieves results for their clients. “Being a smaller firm, the buck stops with me and I believe this ensures a more personalised and accountable service to our clients, allowing us to be proactive rather than reactive wherever possible. Our goal is to continue to provide excellent legal service leading to the best outcomes for our clients.” To contact Peter and the team at O’Connor Law, go to www.oconnorlaw.com.au or phone 4031 1211.

Check and check again any travel arrangements and money transactions as things can go wrong. You carer or ideas could receive quite a boost and money should flow easier. A chance to improve your love life. Changes are likely to occur. Be more tactful when dealing with people. Some financial gain is indicated for most. There will be more responsibility at work, but also more money. Family problems will have a profound effect on many. Look after your health. Let loved one express themselves freely, listen to them and do not loose your temper. Be very tactful and alert when dealing with strangers. Some information coming your way, may be very beneficial for you financial wise. A romantic interlude could give your moral a big boost.

Entertaining could prove expensive so check the costs before splurging in your love life. Stick with who you know rather than trying someone new. For many of you a great time for celebrating and past contacts could reappear. Travel could bring more scope to gain financially. You could be making progress in career matters. However a lot more is expected of you soon. Keep your cool and don’t give advice when it is not asked for. Romance should be great. You should be able to rely on the support of your loved ones, because there are a few problems ahead. However the most important matters during this period you should handle by yourself. Most important that you check everything before you sign on the dotted line and if necessary have it checked out by the experts. A problem at home may need specialist attention.

Don’t drag up the past and don’t recall past mistakes. People you are dealing with during this period may not be all that reliable so double check any information. An Aries could bring luck in some way. An attractive someone could be whispering words of love. The emotional side of your life could bring confusion. Your past has a big impact on future expectations. Changes you make now will be better for you in the long run. This should be a lucky period and a good time to push your luck. Your hunches should be spot on and in career affairs you should attract a lot of support. You may be putting more effort into career affairs. Many could be planning long distance travel. Those in a permanent relationship will gain more pleasure in being with loved ones.

Keep your criticisms to yourself you will have to rely heavily on your persuasive powers to keep love and work affairs running smoothly. Check any important information before acting upon it or you could become involved in something you wont like. Most will be too erratic emotionally to make important decisions. Best to catch up with those neglected chores and do some spring-cleaning. May be wise to save your cash. There are ways to find more excitement in your love life will be opening up to you. Social invitations should be accepted and opportunities to advance financially. Sudden obstacles to your carefully laid plans could suddenly appear. So make sure you have a back up. However a financial windfall is indicated and opportunities to socialize with unusual people.

Beauty Files With Jj

Q: Can You Really Reverse The Effects Of Ageing Without Surgery? A: Yes you can. Lasers can erase wrinkles and pigmentation, and lift. Cosmetics injectables such as muscle relaxants and fillers can soften expression lines , resculpt facial contours and mildly lift. And the Skin Remodelling System provides a true non surgical rejuvenation including tightening, smoothing and lifting.

The Skin Remodelling SystemTM integrates five non-invasive technologies designed to restore skin metabolic functions, taking years off the appearance of the skin without having to resort to painful surgical procedures. Scientific research has shown that tissues can be stimulated and reprogrammed to resume their natural, youthful functions. Every muscle and tissue layer is treated. How does the treatment work? Waves of energy produced by the system , gently vibrate and heat the collagen fibres, reorganising the skin’s scaffolding and stimulating new collagen growth. The effect

is to tighten and rejuvinate the skin in the treated area, simultaneously therapeautic currents are transferred to the deeper layers to repair muscle tissue and restore muscle tone. The skin remodelling treatment uses widely recognised age reversal technologies for the first time in a single treatment that takes only 30 minutes. Results are visible after only one treatment: • Fine lines and wrinkles are noticeably softened. • The facial contour is lifted and toned without any adverse effects. • Skin tone exceptionally radiant.

Jasmine Barnes Having completed year 12 with a strong passion for all that is hair and beauty it was a given that my chosen path would be in the exciting world of hairdressing. My hunger to learn has led to four years packed with education, hair shows, photo shoots, hair expos and competitions. I take great pleasure and pride in giving my clients the caring and professional attention they so deserve and have come to expect from our great team. I feel honoured to continue my growth in this industry as Salon Manager at Jewel. Cheyenne Fairley Starting my apprenticeship in 2011, whilst completing my year 11 and 12 at School tech gave me the head start to my career that I wanted. In 2011 and 2012, my 1st year of my apprenticeship, I was nominated for 5 regional awards recognising my skills through hairdressing and schooling. Working part time at Jewel while completing year 12 in 2012 happily led to the apprenticeship at Jewel. Recently I won a nationally recognised award for Vocational Student of the year 2012. I am very excited for the future of my career and all that it has to offer. Stephen Caldwell I am a stylist with attention to detail, having worked with top salons in Australia such as Brad Ngata Sydney, Stelios Papas Brisbane, Rubi Hair Melbourne and Taylor Taylor London. Keeping up with the

latest hair and fashion trends I can translate these visions into every day styling which means I can cater to your needs. I have assisted at London Fashion Week with great stylists picked from global salons. Zahara Kaya (Yasemin) I started my hairdressing career in Germany 15 years ago. Developing my skills thereafter, through seminars and training at Toni and Guy and Heading Out Melbourne, acquiring my master in Hairdressing. I very much enjoy working as an educator. I have been fortunate enough to work with a number of different people in various countries in Europe including Turkey and Italy. I bring these European techniques with me to Jewel and Jewel’s valued visitors. I am very passionate about sharing these rich experiences and techniques with the Rising Stars here at Jewel. Adam Crow Before starting my career here at Jewel, I was working in the health care industry, specifically in nursing. I loved and still love caring for people and making people feel good about themselves. Having a passion for creativity and artistic expression I found hairdressing to be a better fit to my personality, and I haven’t looked back. I come from a small central QLD town and am loving working with colourful individuals that make up the Jewel team, it has been an inspiring and broadening experience so far and I look forward to expanding my creative skills even further in the coming years.

The Art of Nails

Artificial nails will ruin your natural nails… won’t they?

Most women would agree that a set of natural, well-manicured nails enhance our overall appearance. Unfortunately most women know that the reality is that we are simply too busy to maintain a perfect manicure. Also, our nails are too weak for our busy lifestyles so they break, peel, split and chip. So what are the alternatives? Artificial nails are out there and are designed to take most of the work out of maintaining a perfect set of 10 nails BUT they ruin your natural nails… don’t they? Yes, some products and some nail technicians can definitely ruin your natural nails and I have seen some of the worst examples of this in my 10 years as a nail technician, but let me tell you of a product that will give you a perfect manicure. It adds strength to your natural nails, it stops them peeling and splitting. It looks as natural as your own nails and your polish is dry instantly so it won’t smudge or chip for weeks, but best of all, this product won’t damage your natural nails! It’s called Bio Sculpture Gel.

I discovered Bio Sculpture about 10 years ago and was so impressed with its strength and longevity I quickly stopped using acrylic and became exclusively a Bio Sculpture Gel nail technician. All of my clients converted to Bio Sculpture and all agreed it was a far superior product and they enjoyed the fact that there were no toxic fumes or dust to contend with. What was the most rewarding element for me however was that even after Bio Sculpture was removed, their natural nails were still in the same condition, if not better than when they first came to me; irrespective of how long they had been wearing the product! If you have tried gel before and have not been happy with the results please recognise that there are many different types of gels. Bio Sculpture is the worldwide leader in this field for a reason – it works! Also consider that many acrylic nail technicians provide a gel service, however gel is not their forte, so its application may

not be 100 pre cent effective. If you are sick of the drag of maintaining a natural manicure or if you have been through an unsatisfactory experience with artificial nails, please call me and have a chat about Bio Sculpture Gel on 0408 735 105 or come and visit me in my new location at 76 Shield St and experience the pleasures of Bio Sculpture for yourself.

“I have had Bio Sculpture on my nails for the last 10 years and this picture shows the condition of my nails immediately after gel removal.”

I DID IT!

face to da y

Weight loss success story What convinced you to join the Face Today Community Health & Wellness Challenge? It was actually my daughter who after being introduced to the Isagenix range of products by Tami Shervey at Face Today and hearingabout the upcoming challenge registered both myself and her husband withoutconsultating with us.

Meet

Margaret Churchill

Describe your lifestyle before you started the challenge compared to now? I considered myself to already be reasonably healthy. I was doing two personal training sessions a week and walking most other mornings but due to personal stress in the last year I had developed some poor eating habits that was limiting my progress. Did you feel supported throughout the Face Today Challenge ? Definitely! The Face Today team were amazing and so professional. And not only Kristin and Dan ‘the burpee king’ :) from Heat Personal Training and Fitness and my family but also the other challenge participants. Some have since become close personal friends.

AFTER

BEFORE

What did you weigh before you commenced the challenge? What was your total fat loss at the end of the challenge? I released 12kgs, 57cm and 11% body fat and still going. Were you surprised to have won first place and receive this amazing $8500 makeover? Yes I was in absolute shock and disbelief when it was announced. They had to say it again. I honestly thought my son in law was going to win. I can thank

him for our healthy competitive banter that pushed me over the line in first place. How much has this experience changed your attitude, confidence and self esteem? I have always been a sociable person and quite confident in myself but now that I have lost all this weight and can now raid my daughters closet for social functions my self esteem has received a veryhealthy boost. And to top it off I’ve been having treatments with the highly skilled medical team at Face Today from my prize of Regen, Dermal Fillers and a little anti-wrinkle. Also my teeth have never been so white thanks to Future Dental, another part of my prize. The compliments are flowing, from my workplace, family and friends. How did you find the personalised Isagenix program you were put on throughout the eight weeks? The first few days took some getting use to but I soon settled into a routine and loved the extra energy and vitality I wasexperiencing especially the improved sleep pattern. I was having a full night sleep for the first time in years. Would you recommend the Face Today Challenge and the products to family and friends ? Definitely, I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. It has changed my life and is now a lifestyle I’ll take to the grave. The support you receive during the challenge from the girls at Face Today and the Trainers is immeasurable. I only wish I could join the next challenge ‘SPRING IN2 SUMMER’ at the end of October. It’s worth every ounce of fat lost…forever!

MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design

With Cathie’s Hair we wanted to add more shape and uplift to create a more modern and perky style. We tapered deep into the neck and texturized with uplift through the top which has given Cathie a fun and Perky feel.

Colour Specialist

With Cathie’s Colour we wanted to give some lift and definition without moving too far from the Natural look. We foiled through some nice deep dark Ash tones and some Bright Ash Blonde pieces to create a more textured look.

Make Up Artistry

Again we wanted to keep simple and Natural, so with first evening out Cathie’s skin tone, then gave a healthy dash of sparkle with a glorious Mineral powder, blush, a splash of pink on the eyes and glossy lips to finish. Wow what a difference, Happy Days Cathie.

STONE A milestone has been reached in the treatment of kidney stones in Cairns. Over 900 stones have been treated in the last 16 years at Cairns Day Surgery where the patients treated can go home the same day. This means that there is no need to stay in hospital or travel to Brisbane for treatment. Stones located in and near the exit of the kidney and upper third of the ureter (tube draining the urine to the bladder) may be able to be treated with Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy. This is a procedure carried out in where sound waves are aimed at the stone causing it to break into smaller less painful fragments which usually pass naturally. Over 500 patients have been treated with this method. If the stone is closer to the bladder then usually a Ureteroscope is passed up through the natural opening into the bladder and then into the ureter up to the stone. The stone may be able to then be extracted or it may need to be broken up and then the pieces removed. Over 330 stones have been treated with this method. Finally, bladder stones are usually formed when there is incomplete emptying of the bladder which is usually the result of an enlarged prostate in men. These stones can usually be removed by breaking them up with a mechanical instrument and removing the fragments through the natural passage. More than 100 of these have been dealt with to date. Sometimes bladder stones are too large (golf ball or larger size) to be removed this way and require further surgery.

Picture 1.

Picture 2.

Picture 1. This shows the stone in the right kidney with the sound waves focussed on it. Picture 2. This shows: 1. The basket passed beyond the stone. 2. As the basket is withdrawn the stone is then captured in 3 and extracted.

From floral bouquets to complete styling, because life’s too short to have boring parties

P: 07 4039 3713 | M: 0427 463 925 www.styledbyblush.com | www.facebook.com/blushfloral | www.twitter.com/blushfloral

Planning and budgeting is everything when it comes to tying the knot and organising your finances early is certainly beneficial. Work out how much you can afford to spend and work around that figure. You may be surprised at how expensive things can be and how quickly your budget can be eaten up, so make a list of expenses in order of priority and be prepared to cut some things if it comes to the crunch. At the end of the day, marrying your significant other will be much more memorable than the confetti that was tossed and forgotten about or the personalised lollypop bonbonniere that were left on the table. You can also get creative or get your family to lend a hand to save some money. Set up your own DIY photo booth rather than hiring one or ask Aunt Pat to whip up some homemade treats for the dessert table in lieu of a wedding gift. A lot of venues provide some table decorations, but collecting personal mementos and asking friends to help set up will save money and make the event more personal. Your wedding venue should also have a list of providers they recommend, from florists for your bouquets to professional photographers, which will often save you money and time.

Helping to run successful family business, Ashlee Jones Homes, from her Gordonvale home and raising her four beautiful children, Terri already had her hands full, but when she noticed one of her favourite Grafton St boutiques was up for sale, she decided to take the plunge and buy the business. “Earlier this year, I saw Affair Boutique was closing and told my husband, Ashlee, who suggested I buy the business. I thought why not, I go there all the time and I didn’t want to see it close,” tells Terri, who bought the boutique in May. Since taking over the open, light-filled space, where the bright clothes are the stars amongst the minimalist white interior, Terri diversified the range to incorporate more everyday wear and outfits for the office alongside the existing range of stunning cocktail dresses, racewear and flowing printed maxis. “I wanted to keep all the big labels, such as Wish, Cooper St, Keepsake and Seduce, but add some more casual clothes that I’d like to wear as well,” explains Terri, who added some basic heels and flats to the existing range of higher heels. She also injected some of her own personality into the space, adding rustic white furnishings and pops of fuchsia, creating a welcoming environment for everyone – including husbands. “I even have men’s magazines next to the couch, so husbands can sit down and look through the mags while they wait!” Being a mother and living out of town, Terri appreciates a convenient shopping experience. Customers can browse the online shop and then if they want to try something on, pop into the Grafton St store and bring their kids or husbands into the inviting space. “We focus on customer service and even if we can’t help the customer that day, we make sure they feel welcome and want to come back next time.” Helping to run the store are Terri’s younger sister Brie and passionate sales assistant Lara, who were both customers at the store before working there. “Brie is great at merchandising and helps to order clothes for the younger market so between the two of us we’re a good balance, mostly catering to the 20 to 40-year-old bracket,” she adds. Open Monday to Saturday, Terri and the bubbly line up of ladies at Affair Boutique are more than happy to help you find an outfit for a special occasion or everyday wear, so swing in to Grafton St for your fashion fix. seongok lee SARANG

Offering new season styles, bright colours, bold prints and one-off fashion finds, Lake St fashion hotspot Sarang has become one of Cairns’ most popular boutiques for both locals and tourists alike. If you’re a lover of boutique fashion, beautiful dresses, unique homewares and quirky accessories, then you’ll adore Seongok Lee’s locally owned and operated boutique, Sarang. The store, which is a treasure trove of affordable fashion, jewellery and homewares from Australia and across the globe, has new stock arriving every week and boasts an amazing range of spring/summer looks at the moment. “We have just received Bariano bodycon dresses, maxis and gowns, which are edgy and fashionable and perfect for spring and summer,” tells Seong. “They are luxury garments, yet affordable and we are the only boutique offering this label in Cairns.” Alongside the new dresses and shelves brimming with hand painted lamps, dainty teacups and beautiful ornaments, the spacious boutique also stocks See Saw, offering mature fashion options in natural, breathable fabrics in cotton and linen, which are perfect for our tropical climate. Also ideal for the tropics are the 100 per cent silk kaftans, which are light and breezy and made from upcycled saris from India, meaning each one is unique. “We have also received more designs from Worship, a trans-seasonal brand offering colourful prints and flattering wrap dresses at a great price,” tells Seong, who has just got in the latest season styles from Brazilian shoe designer Mel. These, eco-friendly jelly flats and heels are great for the wet season and can be worn like fashionable gumboots, but stylish with some designs offering a sensible heel. “Another big trend we’ve got in is Ria leather sandals, which are handmade in Spain and are huge in Korea at the moment,” adds Seong. While all the clothes and accessories are made with quality materials, Seong is quick to point out that they are all at affordable prices and handpicked by Seong herself. “I personally handpick everything and only get one of each size. I go searching for products when I travel and thoroughly research my products. I’m passionate about my job and I enjoy it so much.” So whether you’re after affordable and exclusive new season fashion, on-trend footwear or something special for your home, you’ll find it at Sarang – but get in store or online quick because it literally is first in, best dressed. iefje boissevain Un d e r A r t G a l l e r y

Boasting distinctive contemporary artworks from local artists, iefje Boissevain’s UnderArt Gallery on Spence St is an eclectic mix of mediums. Step off the city streets and into iefje Boissevain’s alluring art space, UnderArt Gallery, a fusion of contemporary paintings in various styles, glossy resin clocks combining aesthetics and practicality, quirky sculptures of Australian birdlife perched throughout the displays and original handmade jewellery featuring semi precious stones and sterling silver designs. “I was given the opportunity to open UnderArt Gallery almost four years ago and saw it as a challenge. Every artist dreams of having their own artwork on the walls of their gallery, but I also display the works of other local artists,” tells iefje, whose passion and enthusiasm is evident. With pieces starting at just $15 through to $5000, the inviting environment, which is open seven days a week, draws in art enthusiasts and people from all walks of life. “I’m not just for the art connoisseur, I’m here for everybody and offer something a little bit different,” tells the artist, who has been painting for 12 years and believes art is soul food. To help satisfy the soul, she takes three days a week to create new works for the gallery and is constantly adding existing and emerging artists to her coloured walls. “I just received some great works from Melanie Hava who does contemporary Aboriginal paintings we’ll be showcasing next month,” she explains. Despite being able to boast that she has never had an actual job, iefje is acutely aware and appreciative of her loyal followers. “Every day I’m so grateful for the local people and return clients. Without them, I wouldn’t have this business,” she concedes. To discover more, head to www.underart.com.au or phone 4051 3888.

palm cove supeRMARKET AND DELI

Kate Dewar combines old-fashioned service with a bright, new approach at her eye-catching Palm Cove supermarket. Stroll the breezy esplanade at Palm Cove and you’ll probably spot Kate’s striking sign-printed van parked at this tourist hotspot. Follow the bright pink sign up the stairs and you’ll discover the even brighter teal green and blushing pink store, which locals and tourists alike have dubbed, ‘the pink shop’ – and it’s not hard to see why. The supermarket, which received a makeover from local style squad Insideout, boasts pink eco friendly bags, pink baskets, pink signage and the friendly assistants don the trademark shade aprons as they greet you with a smile – even the bin outside hasn’t been spared the pink treatment. There’s also floor to ceiling stock, chalkboards with artistic flourishes and a reoccurring beach motif, which fits the charming beachside setting. “The previous owner had run the stock down and ended up walking out,” tells Kate, who had owned the store in its heyday prior to this owner and was tempted out of retirement to revamp the store. “I’ve run the store for nine years now, but had eight months off when I sold the business. After the owner walked out, it was a new challenge to claw our way back into the market. I went to Insideout to help with the design concept and they did everything, from the new timber-look floor, which used to be carpet, to the chalkboards and pink theme. It’s such a happy colour and people say we have such a nice vibe.” The revamped store, which echoes nostalgia and oldfashioned service, proudly offers just about everything; from gourmet King Island Dairy cheeses and biscuits, Ben & Jerry’s famous ice cream, jars filled with lollies and barbecue supplies to local fruit and veg and even pharmacy items, locally-made jewellery, deli items and beach toys. “We like to stock a lot of local brands like the Daintree chocolate, which is incredible and Sipping Duck coffee, which is roasted in Palm Cove, but we also stock brands that everyone recognises, such as King Island. About 90 per cent of our customers are tourists who only stay for three to five days, so we stock a lot of smaller items, such as half loaves of bread and small boxes of cereal.” Business has certainly flourished again and Kate keeps up to date with food trends and customer’s demands. With a brand new website and soon-to-be released blog, we suspect it may be a little while off before this foodie hands in her apron and slips back into retirement. Choosing your work

Christmas party venue

Corporate Christmas Packages starting at $75 per person including food and a 3 hour beverage package. Great deals on accommodation booked in conjunction with your package. Rates starting from $132 per night

The work Christmas party depends on two main factors: your budget and your employees. Here’s our guide to booking a suitable venue to fit both criteria. Budget is probably the most important factor when it comes to booking in the team Christmas do, although many venues can cater to small groups and modest budgets. Organise a team lunch as they can often be cheaper than after dark affairs or get everyone together for a catered picnic at the Esplanade and you’re sure to keep costs down. If budget isn’t an issue, take the team down to one of the beautiful eateries that line the waterfront or hire a function room at a swish hotel for a more luxe way to finish off the working year. The second factor to keep in mind is the type of people on your team. A simple lunch or dinner may be more suited to some, rather than a team bungy jump or white water rafting. Choose a venue that caters to all ages and circumstances and you’re sure to keep everyone satisfied. Those that want to stay for a post-dinner

Gift Guide If you’re frequently disappointed by lame stationery or Christmas-themed paperweights at your office secret santa, raise the bar with this guide to festive giving. Buying a gift for the new guy in accounts you know nothing about or your boss who you’re dying to impress may seem difficult and when colleagues are constantly being presented with mind-numbing gifts, it’s hard to know what to buy. The following are some fail-safe gift ideas that are sure to stay within the budget. Homemade treats Food is a pretty safe bet when it comes to gift giving. Baking something yourself is even more special (and sometimes

cost effective). Try making rum balls, shortbread or white Christmas bites. For the time poor or domestically challenged, grab some pre-made Christmas treats the day before. Personalised gifts If you know your co-workers well, you can tailor a gift to them. A coffee fiend may like their own reusable takeaway coffee cup, which is great for the environment and often saves the recipient money when it comes to buying their daily fix. Likewise, tea

76

drinkers would quite likely adore their own teacup or tea-for-one set. Gift card It may seem like the last resort or an unimaginative idea, but gift cards are great for those who are hard to please and are likely to re-gift (or throw out) what you buy them anyway. You can even buy gift cards that can be used anywhere that accepts card payments, meaning they aren’t limited to where or how they spend their money.

Kitchen For authentic Indian flavours and friendly service seven nights a week, you can’t go past Bombay Kitchen on Shields St. Located in the city centre in the former Bollywood Kitchen space, Bombay Kitchen has been serving up the intricate flavours of northern and southern India for the past six months. The chef, who learnt to cook Indian food from his uncle before working in some of the best Indian restaurants in Mumbai and Cairns, offers a huge menu with mild, medium or hot options. Start your meal with a papadum platter of six wafer thin, crispy papadums paired with a spicy mixed pickle dip, a sweet mango chutney with a

faint chilly hint and a cooling yoghurt and cucumber dip. The mix platter for two is also a great taster with seekh kebabs, malai tikka and tandoori chicken to share. Moving on to mains, there are vegetarian curries as well as chicken, lamb, beef and seafood options. The restaurant is rumoured to have the best butter chicken in the city and the dish did not disappoint. The chicken is beautifully tender and the sauce is rich and full of flavour. Lovers of spice shouldn’t go past the beef vindaloo with beef so tender it falls apart, pieces of potato and an aromatic

sauce with layers of intricate flavour and spice that dance across the palate. Order a side of freshly made garlic naan to scoop up the last of the sauce and if you can’t handle the heat, a side of raita helps to cool things down.

How long have you worked at RFDS? I joined RFDS in mid-July 2008, a little over five years ago, starting as a Line Pilot at the Rockhampton Base where about a year later I became Senior Base Pilot there. In August 2012, I moved to Cairns to take on the Senior Base Pilot position. What does your role involve? As Senior Base Pilot of the largest RFDS base, I’m responsible for managing the professional and safe conduct of the day to day Base Aviation operations. This involves ensuring the effective and efficient utilisation of our aviation resources including a team of eight pilots and five Cairns based aircraft– three Beechcraft KingAirs and two Cessna Grand Caravans. Two of the KingAirs are used for Aeromedical retrievals while the other KingAir and two Caravans are used for provision of Primary Health Care services.” A key part of my role is rostering the pilots for both Aeromedical and Primary Health Care clinic flights, ensuring they work within the company’s flight and duty limitations and that they have adequate rest time. As a member of the Cairns Base’s Senior Management team, under Regional Manager, Angela Jarkiewicz, I work closely with my colleagues and provide guidance and information on aviation operations which are

81

integral to the Cairns Base’s provision of services to the community. At times my role also involves team coordination and crisis management, for example during cyclone events that may affect the Base as well as the operation of our aircraft and staff in the communities we service. What do you like most about your role? There are several elements of my role that I enjoy, including the diversity of the tasks at hand; the variety of people I encounter and functioning within a team environment. However, for me having opportunity to fly – especially the aeromedical flights - where each day or night is different in that you never know where you may be going, or what task you will be doing, until the shift commences, would have to be a highlight. Why did you choose to work for RFDS? Over my aviation career, I have seen the work of the RFDS and found it appealing. The aspect of using your talents and flying skills for the benefit of others (literally helping to save lives at times) is what motivates me the most to work for the RFDS. What is your most memorable RFDS experience? There are many memorable experiences of my time so far with the RFDS. The ones that I do tend to remember are those that leave a true altruistic feeling. The feeling that you have made difference, no matter how big or small, to the life at that moment of the patients being transferred.

Wanderers Wrap Up The Cairns RSL Wanderers have triumphed this year, smashing their goals, landing a spot in the semi finals and taking home the Club Champion Trophy for 2013.

It’s been a long and satisfying year for The Cairns RSL Wanderers, a long-standing, family-orientated rugby union club that has seen highs and lows in its rich 35-year history. The club – which was founded in 1978 by John “Tubby” Jekyll, a character who is definitely remembered in the club and the community – has returned to its former glory after a few tough years. Today, the club is overseen by Club President and Vice President Lisa and husband Vince, who like A-Grade coach Bruce Simpson, have strong ties to the club. “It’s been a long year for us,” tells Bruce, who was asked to step in and coach the A-Grade this year. “Last year we only won a few games, so this year we wanted to finish in the top four.” In the end all teams, including the A-Grade, Reserve, Junior and Women’s, made the semi finals and the A-Grade finished up in third place, just missing out on a tight game of 38-37. The guys also took out the Club Champion Trophy for 2013 after all the points from the year were tallied – an achievement the guys can certainly be proud of. “When I set the goal of making the top four, the guys thought it would be hard, but we started off the season with two good wins and a positive, determined attitude in training,” tells Bruce, who started playing for the local club in 1983 and now coaches his oldest son in the A-Grade. “In the end we were unbeaten for at least 11 games.” While all the players put in a sterling effort, there are three men that deserve a special mention. Puta Saitu came out as Best and Fairest, Angus Warnock earned Best Back and captain Grant Cleaver gained the title of Best Forward. Coming into the 36th year, the A-Grade is looking for an assistant coach and manager and always welcomes new players to join the twice-weekly Jones Park training sessions. They’ve also set a new goal for the coming season. “It was really good to finish up this year on a high note, but next year, we want to win,” says Bruce with a smile.

I’m a modernistic chef using a mix of old and new techniques however my food at home is really simple, fresh ingredients... raw if possible with a good piece of local fish or meat cooked well. When I do come up with new recipes I always try them at home with my best mate so I can get his take before I serve it in the restaurant, this way I can have a play around and change things where needed. Trekking The opportunity came about very suddenly when a couple of very dear friends asked us to join them. It was all very last minute, but the opportunity was far too good to pass up. Planning for the trek was quite a crazy, exciting task. From researching the vaccinations we would need to going through our collection of outdoor clothing and equipment required. While my husband and I are both very adventurous and love a challenge, the 18-day trek from Kathmandu to Pokhara, crossing the world’s biggest pass at a height of 5416m was a new gig for us. Kathmandu – what a vibrant and exciting city. There are literally trekking shops everywhere! Not too sure of the quality of equipment but it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than buying it at home. You have to look past the dirty streets and the vast amounts of cars, all which seem to honk at every opportunity. It’s a huge culture shock to some I’m sure, but we were loving every minute of it! We found the most fabulous place for our first dinner – The Roadhouse Cafe and had the best pizza ever! Not very traditional, but we did

Be prepared for the hawkers, but be nice, they’re just trying to make a living. Nerves and excitement were building now, one more sleep and we would start our trek. We met a few people in town that had not succeeded due to altitude sickness and had been helicoptered off the mountain... a little nervous now, too! I still felt my biggest challenge was going to be the squat toilets and the smell... not the mountain! It’s difficult to summarise our 18 days. There were moments we loved and moments we hated, but not once did we regret our decision. The scenery on the circuit is some of the most beautiful in the world. Huge, pumping waterfalls; thick forests; snowcapped mountains; the most amazing valleys; steep, treacherous walkways – it never ends. When you are not being blown away by nature you are enthralled by the locals. From snotty-nosed children playing with their pet goats to the most amazing looking village

elders. It’s a pretty tough challenge dealing with the cold, altitude, blisters, never ending hills and rocky dry river beds to name but a few, but, oh, so incredibly rewarding. Day after day you think it can’t get any more stunning but it does! We definitely could not have succeeded without our porters. Apart from sharing our load they would trek ahead to the next village to arrange our accommodation for the night. Nor could I have coped without my three-ply. It came in very handy for making nose plugs for those “toilets”. Reaching the peak at Thorang La was surreal. The day was long, cold and hard but wow, worth every minute of it. The hard work wasn’t over though... going down was a pretty big challenge, too. Weather you decide to trek independently or as an organised group I fail to see how anyone would not enjoy this adventure.

Health & Character Requirements for Immigration

All people who are not Australian citizens require a visa to enter Australia. One of the conditions for the grant of a visa is that the applicant must meet the legal requirements for entry to Australia, in particular health and character criteria. People who want to migrate to Australia are required to meet health requirements which may mean undergoing a health examination. The type of health examination required depends on your circumstances, including the proposed length of your stay, your intended activities in Australia, your country of residence and other factors. Applicants applying for permanent residency are required to undergo a medical examination, a chest x-ray if over 11 years of age and a HIV/AIDS test if 15 years of age or older. Applicants for temporary entry into Australia may require a chest x-ray, medical examination and other tests, if requested. In Australia Medibank Health Solutions provide visa medicals for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship while Global Health/ Health Operations Centre (HOC) assess and process offshore immigration

health examinations. Health examinations for Australian immigration may only be conducted by a qualified doctor or radiologist who is nominated as a panel doctor by Medibank Health Solutions or Global Health. If an individual has a costly health condition or they have a condition that will require treatment, care or community services that are in short supply in Australia then they may be refused a visa as they do not meet the health criteria. Some visa classes have a waiver component which allows DIAC to consider waiving the health requirement if the costs to the community and access to health care services by Australians would not be ‘undue’. However a waiver cannot be exercised where the visa applicant is assessed as representing a risk to public health and safety.

Similarly, all visa applicants entering Australia are required to be of good character and are assessed against the character requirements. Section 501 of the Migration Act contains a character test to assess the suitability of people to enter and stay in Australia and has discretionary powers to either refuse or cancel visas if the person fails the character test. A person will fail the character test where they have a substantial criminal record, or where they have or have had an association with an individual, group or organisation suspected of having been or being involved in criminal conduct. Where a person’s past and present criminal conduct or general conduct is found to be not of good character or where there is a significant risk that the person will engage in criminal conduct in Australia they will also fail the character test.

Land for your new home is selling quickly so

start the process early. If you are looking at purchasing land to build your new home then move sooner rather than later. Choose your land and make sure your home is designed to take all the advantages it has to offer. Cairns has had an oversupply of land for the past few years. Lately, that’s been changing.

I’ve been dealing with many developers in our area recently and they have found that they are now very low on land stock that is titled and ready to go. Developers have held off completing titles as it’s a costly procedure if they have not been guaranteed of a quick sale. Once land is titled it is subject to rates and charges so the longer they have to hold land, the more their holding costs are. Subsequently, much of the old stock has sold and developers are now working on the future land relaeases. Some developers have a waiting list and are taking holding deposits on land that won’t be available till next year. We haven’t seen that kind of activity for many years. This will in turn reflect in pricing as new land stock to comes on the market. Rises is development costs including on going environmental requirements, physical site works, government fees and charges, and of course consumer demand will all combine to drive land prices up. Cairns is poised for an increase in building activity. I‘m not talking about a ‘boom’, or anything like we saw 10 years ago, but we’ve been lacking construction and development for the last few years. The commercial sector has had some good news on development projects

starting soon and this will flow on to the residential market. Tourism and commercial developments are on the move and Cairns has one the fastest growing populations (percentage wise) in Australia. These people need somewhere to live This will add to the pressure on availability of good land for development and extend the waiting lists longer. It’s good to have a positive feel in the air after all the doom and gloom we have been reading about. Lets take advantage of it while we can.!! Think about this…. With land delays lengthening, if you want to be in your now home by next Christmas, not this coming one, start planning now.

Porttoberfest Ever since October 2007 the next of Port Douglas landmark lifestyle events has been quietly, well quite loudly actually, building its reputation here in our little piece of tropical Australia. Porttoberfest - Beers of the World was established to recognize the diverse international flavour of Port Douglas’ unique locals and it’s perpetual wealth of visitors and of course the undeniable fact that here in Port Douglas and Cairns, quite frankly, we love beer! Porttoberfest since its launch has graced the spectacular palm lined Rex Smeal Park whilst in more recent years has been hosted by the legendary Lure resturrant on the boardwalk of the Port douglas marina. “Porttoberfest means ‘good times’ to the thousands who

have attended over the years. And this year the spectacular marina boardwalk, with its scenic backdrop of the Rex Mountain Range and the luxury yachts bobbing at their moorings in time to the festival music, will present a very special way of celebrating this traditional German Mega Festival. “We see this event being able to embrace all the great things celebrated by our other major event hosted on the marina, Carnivale’s Seafood Extravaganza. We have organised Cairns / North Queensland’s hottest super group Hip 2 Soul and the Tonic from 2pm to

92

10pm to play throughout the afternoon/evening and for anyone who hasn’t yet heard of or seen the Porttoberfest Dancing Girls then just these girls are worth coming for, and yes, there will be the traditional slap dance! We even have $500 cash prize for the “Best Dressed Beer Wench” enticed Mr Stapleton. First time we will have the beer drink competition as well “We have plenty of beer merchandise on sale and to give away as well as prizes for those patrons who make effort to come in the country colours of their favourite international beer” added Mr Stapleton.

Walking the D og

Exercising your dog is a crucial part of establishing a relationship with your canine companion. It is physically and mentally stimulating and allows us to be in control of our dogs behaviour in many challenging and conflicting situations. We lead the way, give them directions and guide them through many encounters away from the home environment.

For many owners walking their dog is a daily struggle of physical and emotional endurance. The picture is always the same, human being helplessly towed in every direction whilst the dog strains and pulls on the lead. These dogs commonly display various forms of anti-social behaviour and can be extremely hard to control in the company of other dogs and people. Understandably many people stop walking their dogs as these confrontations escalate. A lack of stimulation then results in the dog finding other ways to alleviate its frustration. Barking, digging, chewing and escaping are problems consistent with dogs that are not given adequate exercise. How can we work towards solving this problem? Undertaking an obedience training program is the first step in educating the owner on

how to achieve the correct walking position for their dog. These courses also incorporate valuable information on handler skills and offer ideas on how the owner should react when they are confronted with various situations out in the community. There are many different training collars, chains, harnesses and head halters which can assist the owner in gaining better control of the dog. Combined with a positive obedience program they can be very beneficial in the training process. Teaching your dog to walk beside you and follow your direction requires calm, consistent and repetitive training. This process should begin from the very first day you walk your dog. Remember that EVERYONE who walks the dog must be consistent and maintain the same pattern of training. The role of leadership in the

93

CairnsLife

home environment plays a huge part in the behaviour of the dog on the lead. Dogs that have clear and consistent boundaries at home are less likely to assume the leadership position when out on the lead. If you are having trouble walking and controlling your dog contact a professional. A dog that is well educated with on- lead walking is easier to transition to consistent off- lead control. Addressing the problem early will ensure your dog does not establish a pattern of behaviour which becomes imprinted and is therefore harder to correct. Lachlan

PORT

Walker

Who are you and what do you do? Lachlan Walker, General Manager of Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, husband, dad of four kids and responsible for the day to day running of 294 guest rooms, 100 villas and four venues and bars. How long have you worked in Port Douglas for? I’m fortunate enough to have lived in Port Douglas for five years. Where is the most beautiful location you have worked? Port Douglas of course! In August the weather is beautiful. There’s Four Mile beach, the reef and rainforest, Mossman Gorge and of course our beautiful sparkling lagoons. There’s also no traffic and you know the bank manager. What is the most interesting job you have had? Working with Starwood Hotels & Resorts has given me the opportunity to travel to amazing places all over the world. With over 1100 properties worldwide, the options are endless. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why? That’s a hard one. It’s important to embrace where you are living and look at the positives and enjoy them. In Port Douglas it’s the weather and nature. In Vanuatu it’s Port Vila, the untouched beauty and a simple way of life. In Kuala Lumpur it’s the melting pot of cultures, great food, a hub to travel anywhere and the list can go on. What inspires you? Resilience, humility and generosity. Why is it important for you to support National Breast Cancer Month?

96

CairnsLife

Most people have been affected by cancer and indeed breast cancer – myself with my family and my wife’s family. We must never give up and in my role I have an opportunity to support and drive many events to ensure we never do give up finding ways to fund these worthwhile charities while having a good time. Why it is important for locals to support the event? Part of Sheraton’s core values is “community” – supporting the community and its people and also the wider community. Each year Sheraton has a range of events supporting UNICEF, Red Kite, Leukemia Foundation and we need to the locals (as well as tourists) to support these events, as you never know when you may call on these foundations yourself. It’s a great feeling – “helpers high” we call it. What are you hoping to raise from this event? Awareness, generosity of spirit, money and of course more hope to people who have or are touched by breast cancer. Why would you choose to attend this Melbourne Cup event? With this Melbourne Cup Garden Party we are bringing Flemington to Port Douglas! The Glade Pavilion will be transformed into a day at the races with a fashion parade, Calcutta, raffles, THE race and of course delicious food and drinks and to top it off you’ll support the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I can’t wait! Book your tickets now on www. sheratonportdouglas.com and why not treat yourself and stay the night?
