I have always been obsessed with positive, but for once I have had a record month of meetings with positive people and I’m loving it. Many business owners’ smiles bursting at their cheeks as they’ve had the best month since 2008. It’s been a long battle and I hope the tide has turned. Well it certainly has in the building industry as our ‘Boom’ cover story featuring the inspiring Russell Parnicott, HIA Cairns Branch Manager, informs us. Women are also leading the way in construction and finance. We were delighted to profile them and know you will enjoy their motivating stories. Also a big congratulations to all the winners of the 2013 Pioneer NQ HIA Awards. Happy November.

COVER story

Cairns is experiencing a revival with renewed faith in the housing market, increased tourism activity and the promise of a new chapter more encouraging than the last – and local HIA branch manager Russell Parnicott believes it’s a positive time for the community at large.

T

he Housing Industry Association (HIA) is a national, memberbased association and Australia’s largest residential building organisation with almost 500 members in the local region. Heading the Cairns office is Queensland-born Russell Parnicott, who has always worked in the building industry and has been involved in the HIA for the past three years. His close involvement and passion for the industry in Cairns has seen him monitoring the industry and he’s certainly excited and prepared for the future in the region after the recent downturn in the economy. “It’s the longest down spell we’ve had since the pilot strikes in the ’80s. We were worried there would be a shortage of skilled labourers in the region when things picked up, so while it was

quiet we were up-skilling young guys and training new guys to be prepared,” tells Russell, who explains how HIA offer a huge training branch with 31 people recently receiving their Certificate IV in building and construction. Russell is ready for the turn in the market and believes the Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort is exactly what we need. “It’s so exciting it’s happening. The whole community is positive and interested in Aquis. It’s a big project and will stimulate other areas and increase the amount of people looking for housing,” he adds. The value of housing in the surrounding areas should increase with the addition of the new development and the entire community at large should feel the flow on affect. Projects such as Kewarra Beach Resort, Double Island and the

12

CairnsLife

recently proposed aquarium project are huge pluses for the industry as well. “The rejuvenation of the city will come with these projects,” tells Russell, who remembers how buzzing and vibrant the city once was. As we welcome the new chapter in Cairns history, the housing industry has never looked better, with HIA membership lifting the standard of quality workmanship, great products and national recognition from the HIA Awards to back it up. “The future is certainly rosy for Cairns. We’ve come out of the slump and it’s a positive time for this magnificent place.”

A house built for entertaining and a wowing impression deserves nothing short of a kitchen to match such stunning and open plan living. This kitchen definitely delivers with such a rigorous criteria and embraces the views over the water. The subtle glossy finishes blend seamlessly with the surroundings in the house to ensure a perfect match for this waterside haven.

In 2011, when the market was at its lowest point in 20 years Heather saw an opportunity that those around her were blind to. “With a background in sales and finance, everyone around me said, ‘you’ll fail’, but that’s all the motivation I needed to show them that I could do it.“You watch me- two years it will take me,” she said to a pessimistic supplier also in the doldrums about the state of the industry. Like so many, this success story stems from adversity. Grant, a successful builder of 30-odd years had ended a bitter partnership with a home building franchise. The couple were literally fighting for survival. While Grant saw a gloomy outlook, Heather saw a bed of roses and set out to learn from the past by putting the modern day client expectations at the centre of the design process. “I started to observe how people live, how they want to live, and how I live as a working Mum. The ideas came thick and fast. It was an absolute mirage, a vision of what new homeowners were looking for. I started designing.” MyStyle was created overnight. It’s mantra “It’s all about You” was the window of opportunity that only Heather could see.“I was told that I was crazy and they were probably right. If I had had a brain I probably wouldn’t have done it,” she laughs. The journey has been far from easy. There were a few pricks amongst that bed of roses … needless to say that the competition was not happy about a new kid on the block. Heather’s first design revealed a new way of capitalising on a small 450m2 block- maximising every inch of precious living space inside without

29

compromising on the outdoors. “We showed that you don’t have to compromise on style and livability. We launched my first design ‘MyMirage’ display home which included a lap pool, a yard, and open plan tropical lifestyle features. People were astonished that we could build such a beautiful home for the price.” “I worked three months straight selling,14 hour days, without a day off. Day after day MyMirage exceeded my expectations. “My designs are like babies to me. I take special care and attention to detail. As we build I re-work aspects similar to the design and construction of beautiful clothing. The end result is a refined design with points of interest that can be duplicated or tailored to individual needs.” While Heather has the ideas, it’s Grant who brings them to life. “It’s not easy keeping up with her though,” he says proudly. “She’s 100 miles an hour, a complete dynamo that keeps going til she drops. She’s full of cheek and laughs. “After building all my life, she set me off in a new refreshing direction that is setting new benchmarks for new homeowners. “She simply won’t hear that something can’t be done. Yes darling we’ll re-engineer to make a one-piece glass walled plunge pool possible!” (Which they did.) “She has amazing design ingenuity that comes from diligent observation of how we move around and use a space. She is always designing.” So where does Heather Ghidella want to be in 10 years time? In ‘semi-retirement’, producing beautiful affordable homes for the ever evolving lifestyle of the modern family - which for Heather means a 40 hour week, reduced from 80! JMC ARCHITECTS & FIELD HOMES

With a passion for art and science, Julianne felt destined to become an architect and believes it is extremely valuable to invest in an architect throughout the entire process of building from concept design to final completion. From a young age, Julianne knew she wanted to study architecture, which combined her two passions, arts and science, in one career. She left her local family farm in Meerawa to study a Bachelor of Architecture in Brisbane, graduating with honours and returning to her childhood city to pursue a career. “I registered as an architect soon after completing my degree and started work as an associate architect and design architect for firms in Brisbane, Cairns and Port Douglas,” tells Julianne. With client demand growing, Julianne opened her own practice, JMc Architects, in 2005 quickly followed by Field Homes with husband, Richard, due to demand from clients wanting Julianne’s creative design flair and Richard’s quality of workmanship and detailing to build their home. “JMc Architects offers a broad range of architectural services, from project inception to completion, encompassing commercial and residential design. Each project brings with it its own particular constraints and requirements and we place emphasis on personal service,” explains Julianne, who prides herself on her ability to provide a personalised best practice service from her award-winning company. “At Field Homes you are dealing with me from the start. Your service is personalised and your design is truly unique to your site. Finalising the concept design we begin to work with Richard ensuring the practicalities and client budgets are aligned with the client’s brief. The advantages are the architect and builder are working together with the clients’ interest at forefront.” As a qualified and highly experienced architect, Julianne enjoys working with light and understanding how a client wants to use their space before designing. The result is an individualised service tailored to the client’s needs and service that extends throughout the whole construction process with a focus on budget and vision. “An architect can manage the entire design and construction process. A minimum of five years’ university training, mandatory practical experience and a registration exam separate architects from other lessqualified building designers. More than a designer, an architect works with you on an intensive exploration of your requirements, to help you realise your dream,” explains Julianne. Her unique situation of working from a builder’s office is a huge advantage with Julianne and Richard understanding each other’s process. Furthermore, Julianne believes architects create environments and see the big picture as well as functionality when designing. “You will increase your chances of getting the process right by engaging an architect who is registered and a member of the Australian Institute of Architects, tells Julianne, who sees her role as allowing people to walk into their dreams.” With the qualifications, more than a decade’s experience each and the latest technology, JMc Architects and Field Homes can manage the entire architectural design and construction process. “The client is guaranteed innovative and quality design solutions from a qualified professional. JMc Architects provides all of this at a personal level.” To find out more, go to www.jmcarchitects.com.au and www.fieldhomes.com.au.

jenny cavallaro Allaro Homes

When it comes to inspiring woman in the construction industry Jenny Cavallaro of Allaro Homes leads by example. She shows us that anything is possible if you have passion, determination, and above all else integrity. Jenny Cavallaro tackles her business the same way she tackles life – with grace, humility, kindness and a lot of fun. She is passionate and driven and holds the sanctity of family above all else. But for Jenny, her family isn’t just the four sons she has raised with her husband of 33 years Wayne, it is also the people she holds closest to her and the team at Allaro Homes who she treats as her own. Today, Allaro Homes (formerly Better Homes Queensland) is one of the most revered builders in north Queensland, known not only for its quality custom built homes, but also its warm approach and family-like team. For Wayne and Jenny, this has been the cornerstone to the success of Allaro Homes – a business they have worked alongside together to establish and grow for more than three decades. She admits the company has changed and evolved over the years and there has been nothing more rewarding than seeing what was then W&J Cavallaro Builders in the late 1980s transition to Better Homes Queensland in 2002 and finally in 2012 to Allaro Homes. From their very beginnings, the pair haven’t looked back and have always approached life very much as a team. Today, their focus is now on realising their lifelong dream to franchise the business, which she admits will be incredibly exciting and rewarding. “Changing our name to Allaro Homes one year ago has allowed us to evolve into the next phase of our business as franchisors. It has also given us an identity that is more personal and unique. This has been a very time consuming process and we are constantly working towards this but the more you learn the more you find out what you don’t know.” However, if there is one thing they do know, it is that their very own beliefs will continue to sit at the very heart of this company. “Allaro is a true reflection of our own personal, moral and ethical beliefs and this is what we want to share with the rest of Australia.

31

“We have worked very hard to achieve the success and good reputation that we have today as well as tried to keep the balance between work and play,” she adds. When Jenny isn’t in the office, she can be found on the racetrack with her super charged limited edition FPV R Spec GT. This need for speed is at opposites to her more creative side, which has seen her graduate from fashion college, run a successful fashion retail store featuring her own line of clothing known as JC Inspirations as well as help countless clients with their design and colour choices for their new homes. “Racing is a challenge, and just as you do in business where you constantly look to grow, evolve and improve what and how you do things, you have to do this as a person as well. You need to test and push yourself otherwise life would just be boring,” Jenny says. A famous quote that Jenny lives by is “the results you achieve, will be in direct proportion to the effort you apply” and if the myriad of awards that line the walls of the Allaro Homes head office are a measure of the team’s effort and vision, than there is a whole lot more to come. Most recently, Allaro Homes received the award for Special Purpose Housing at the HIA Awards for the construction of a retirement village in Atherton. Another important milestone has been the completion of their stunning and very edgy new display home at Trinity Beach, which opened in September. For Jenny, being recognised as the 2012 Cairns Business Women of the Year was one of the most moving and humbling experiences of her career. But what this woman doesn’t realise is that her never ending passion, determination and desire to succeed show us that anything is possible. charmaine matthews A u s ta r t H o m e s

Charmaine Matthews turned a childhood dream into a lifelong career – and even found herself a husband who shares her passion for construction along the way. Drawing houses and designing floor plans at the age of 10 and enjoying trips to display homes , Charmaine knew before she left primary school that she wanted to work in the building industry. At 18, Charmaine left her hometown of Sydney to commence a drafting cadetship on the Gold Coast and began building the foundations for a successful career in the industry. “I was studying and working as a draftsperson for Newstart Homes, as it was known then, which my now-husband, Phillip Matthews, owned,” Charmaine explains. “I was involved in designing new display homes and also decorating, choosing colours and materials. People love our neutral decorating and Phill’s furniture, which he now designs himself.” In 2004, Phill and Charmaine rebranded the business Franchise system to Austart Homes and have since reclaimed two local franchises in addition to managing a number of franchisees from Cairns to Northern NSW. “Looking after the franchisees is a challenge, but it’s fun. I try to keep them happy and give them the support they need,” tells Charmaine. “We offer different construction methods catering to what the area is accustomed to. In North Queensland, we use block construction with colorbond roof, Southern areas use Brick veneer & Tile”. Not only catering to the regions, A ustart Homes cater to their clients various needs, working with them to create their dream home and even customising their own designs, if needed. “I just love selling houses to people and seeing their faces when they’re handed the keys to their dream home,” says Charmaine, who appreciates having the support from her husband who has been in the industry and in business for more than 40 years. The pair make an excellent team, winning numerous awards and recently taking out an award for one of their stunning homes, the Laguna 298, and Charmaine’s talent was recognised when she took out the HIA Business Partner of the Year (North Queensland) in 2012 and a finalist in the National awards in 2013. “The HIA award was an achievement I was proud of, but my main goal is just to keep our customers happy. We prefer to build fewer houses and keep customers happy rather than sell the most homes and lose that personal touch. We are a financially stable company who pride ourselves in looking after our contractors, suppliers and customers,” says Charmaine, who has a soft spot for Pebbly Beach which she calls home and loves spending time there with Phill and her teenage son Roy. After 17 years in the Cairns region, Charmaine is positive about the future of the market in the region and while she has achieved her dream of owning a building company, Charmaine still has future expansion plans for Austart Homes !

Grab your passport and pack your suitcase – we’re taking you to our favourite destinations around the globe, from old ruins in ancient cities to ultra-chic modern destinations.

Compiling a list of the top six destinations in the world is no mean feat with endless historic sights, natural wonders, modern cities and interesting cultures to experience, but we’ve given it our best shot.

Paris It’s been dubbed the city of romance, but singles, couples and families alike can enjoy France’s buzzing capital. The soaring Eiffel Tower, beautiful Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe and the expansive Louvre Museum have an obvious allure, however the cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes tell another story. Sample lavender infused macarons and authentic French fare, experience the city after dark at one of the many happening bars or peruse markets and boutiques for a beautiful memento.

New York Take a bite of the Big Apple and it may feel like you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole. Purchase a Hop-On Hop-Off Tour from one of the persuasive salesman on the street and explore the city at your own pace. Be sure to catch the ferry past the Statue of Liberty, hire a bike to ride around Central Park, eat pasta at Little Italy and spend some time in Times Square, which is buzzing at all hours.

Cairo This ancient city combines old and new with engineering marvels such as the pyramids and sphinx neighbouring fast food options such as KFC. Take a camel ride through the dessert and explore the great pyramids and be sure to allow enough time to wander the expansive Egyptian Museum, which houses endless artefacts and the mummies of some wellknown ancient rulers. After discovering the old, take in some of the new world, with an authentic Egyptian meal and perhaps a sheesha to complete the experience. London Take your time exploring this city, which has more to offer than you might think. Take an open bus tour to take in all the iconic sights such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Westminster, then stroll one of the many markets on offer – the Borough Market and Broadway Market are worth seeing. Stop in at the beautiful old British Museum or one of the many free museums in the city, then finish your day with a cocktail in the Heron Tower with sprawling views over London.

ON THE TRAIL OF THE

I am sitting here in the central courtyard of the beautiful Cusco Marriot, an amazing blend of Inca, Spanish Colonial and modern architecture; contemplating the fantastic day I had yesterday, visiting what is possibly the most famous panorama and archaeological site on the planet, Machu Picchu. Until the American explorer, Hiram Bingham stumbled upon the jungle covered ruins of Machu Picchu in 1911 it had lain hidden from the rest of the world, protected by its covert location on top of the Andes. He believed he had found the lost city of Vilcabamba, the final refuge of the last Incan King, but Machu Picchu turned out to be something far more impressive, the largest Incan settlement never to have been discovered – and plundered – by the Spanish. These days the secret is out. Every year thousands of travelers from around the globe lace up their hiking boots to make this bucket list pilgrimage. The World Heritage Site is cradled between two dramatic peaks, Machu Picchu (ancient peak in Quechua) and Huayna Picchu (young peak) and surrounded by the all-consuming beauty of the Andes. The mountains reach for the skies, while below, cloud forest gives way to sheer cliff faces, descending sharply into the deep canyon and the rushing waters of the Urubamba River. It is famous for a reason; there is not a soul on earth who can fail to be impressed with the awesome majesty of this lost Inca City in the clouds.

Our experience Ourcounts. experience counts.

One of the reasons that Machu Picchu is so compelling is that to this day nobody truly knows why it was built. Theories abound; Machu Picchu is thought to have been constructed perhaps as a site of astronomical significance, an observatory, an important agricultural station, a military fortress, a place of learning, an important ceremonial centre, a royal Inca retreat or perhaps just to celebrate the astounding natural beauty around it. Machu Picchu is relatively compact, so it is possible to see the complex of palaces, plazas, temples and homes in a half day, but I would suggest lingering long after your guided tour has finished to truly appreciate some of the more important buildings: the Sun Temple, the Royal Mausoleum or the monolithic shrines of the Sacred Plaza. Alternatively if you get in early and purchase one of the limited tickets to either Intipunku (The Sun Gate) or the demanding climb to the top of Huayna Picchu you will be rewarded with one of the worlds most thrilling panoramas. The jumping off point for Machu Picchu is the vibrant town of Cusco. It’s full of life, colour and energy, yet quaint and ageing like a small European town. The cobblestone roads, decaying buildings, endless hills, and large open plaza’s set a very slow and relaxed pace and the dining options are sublime. I would strongly suggest spending a few days here. The area abounds in Inca ruins, including the imposing Sacsayhuaman fortress

or further afield, in the sacred valley, the magnificent terraces and ruins of the town of Ollaytaytambo, stopping at the colourful Pisac markets on route. Whilst you are enjoying the historical attractions, nightlife and culinary delights, you will also be giving yourself time to adjust to the altitude. Cusco is located 3399 meters above sea level and altitude sickness is a possibility. While it is possible to reach Machu Picchu by bus, most people take one of the train options or the more adventurous souls choose one of the several multi day hikes such as the Salkantay Trail or the famous Inca Trail. Having taken this option the first time I visited Machu Picchu, pushing myself to the limit, climbing to Dead Woman’s Pass and trekking along the ancient Inca pathways through the mystic cloud forest and countless Inca ruins along the way, this time I opted for the luxury of the Orient Express Hiram Bingham Train. Voted the best train in the world by the readers of Conde Nast Traveller UK (2011) the journey through the dramatic valley of the Urubamba River is a highlight in itself. Oozing old world luxury and charm, the train has two dining cars, an observation/bar car and a kitchen car. The trip includes brunch and an excellent section of Peruvian wines as well as on board entertainment. Next stop Chile and the Lakes district of Patagonia. Wherever you choose to travel this year have fun!

KPMG is the perfect display of women in finance, with 11 professional ladies from diverse backgrounds leading the way in management roles across the firm’s three divisions: business services; audit; and business recovery and insolvency. At the end of the day however, it is the individual performance of each of these women that has seen them progress to their current position. They are all role models within our business and a critical part of our success,” says Gerry. The firm’s reputation was a drawcard for these leading ladies, but the culture,

environment and high standards have encouraged them to stay. “When I graduated from JCU 25 years ago, there were only three or four options in Cairns. It was the reputation and professionalism that attracted me to KPMG,” says Cathy Devietti, a senior manager in business services. “The culture here is open and honest, it makes you feel at ease,” added senior audit manager Shona Malseed, who worked with the firm in Melbourne before moving to Cairns. Olivia Van Wensveen sees working for a national firm in a regional city as a major benefit as the team, and in turn clients, have a wealth of experience and resources to draw from. “We’re in one of the world’s major accounting firms based in Cairns so there’s the advantage of being both regional and part of an international organisation, yet we get to live in a beautiful part of the world” says the business recovery and insolvency senior manager. Tamara Christopher, a business services senior manager who joined the firm in

2007, says the opportunity to travel both nationally and internationally is one of the key benefits of working for KPMG, while Sonja Noonan notes the diversified types of work as a manager in business services keeps things interesting. Keeping up to date with changes in legislation and regulation is a continual challenge according to Cathy, as well as maintaining a healthy work/life balance. “Managing a portfolio of clients can also be challenging at times,” says audit division director Helen Wilkes. “Every client wants to feel like they’re our only client and we treat them as though they are.” The ladies are certainly paving the way in management roles in the finance game, and present as strong role models for the next generation of women who follow. megan o’neill C a i r n s Q u a l i t y A cc o u n t i n g

A short-lived stint in teaching was replaced by a 20 year career in finance for Megan O’Neill of Cairns Quality Accounting. While studying to be a teacher in Brisbane, a young Megan worked in her father’s accounting firm, but didn’t consider it to be a career just yet. “I was a primary school teacher first which only lasted two years and was posted to Cairns for a teaching role,” explains Megan, who later resigned and tried her hand at a few positions before finding her feet in her family career of finance. “Dad came up to Cairns and bought an accounting practice and I went to work for him,” tells Megan, whose brother is also an accountant and took over their father’s firm in Brisbane; and she has a sister who likewise works in finance. With an interest in numbers and a family tradition in the industry, Megan decided to go back to studying, receiving her Masters in Accounting then going on to obtain CPA then FCPA status. In March 2008, she took a leap of faith and opened Cairns Quality Accounting. “We’re a small family orientated firm and cater to the whole spectrum. We offer tax returns, accounting and BAS services, bookkeeping, management and general consulting and audits. I often say to clients, I make sense of the mess,” she jokes. “And now Dad works for me!” With a small team of four approachable staff, the Grafton St firm prides itself on offering a very personalised service and you know you’re going to be dealing with the same people every time. “We have virtually no staff turn over and you can talk to the same people, which I think clients like. You can lose that continuity in some of the larger firms. We like to get to know you and your family and you can be assured that all your personal details are kept confidential. It helps if we can make you feel comfortable.” Looking back over her career, a few moments stand out as milestones for Megan. Of course, opening her own business and starting from scratch was her proudest moment, but also becoming a Registered Company Auditor was a huge achievement. “It’s a status that is quite difficult to get, but I was very lucky to work under Dad and learn from him.” Running your own business and managing a small team is not without its difficulties, but Megan believes the company is up for any challenges they may face and plans to keep moving the company in the same direction as a small, manageable, family friendly firm. karen donato KD FINANCIAL

Years of experience and a strong work ethic have paid off for motivated, self-starter Karen Donato of KD Financial. Karen’s introduction to the finance industry dates back to 1988 when she finished her schooling and took up a position with a leading bank as a lending officer, but after a successful career spanning 18 years, she decided to make the switch to broking. “I have always enjoyed the finance industry,” explains Karen. “In 2006, I commenced my finance broking career and have gone from strength to strength ever since.” In July this year, Karen took matters into her own hands opening her own business on Mulgrave Rd. “KD Financial is a residential and commercial finance broking company whose primary role is providing a quality service and strategy to assist clients in achieving their financial goals, whether they are big or small,” tells Karen. This means the company offers a complete finance brokering service and can assist with home loans, investment loans, commercial loans,

leasing and equipment finance as well as debt consolidation and refinances. The company isn’t linked to any particular bank or lending institution – instead Karen is able to assist in finding the best deal possible, determine your borrowing power or calculate your available equity to purchase another property. “I don’t work for the banks, I work for the clients, but I have access to all the banks and all the policies so I can get the best option and ensure it’s a competitive price,” explains Karen. Being a small business, Karen is willing to work hard and give the specialised, personalised service her clients expect. While there are challenges, she believes it’s how you handle them that matters. “Success doesn’t come in an elevator, you have to climb the stairs and do the hard work and I’m willing to do that for my customers,” says Karen and her customer

are certainly appreciative of her efforts. “The daily thanks from clients are most rewarding, from first home buyers to small business operators.” With her dream realised, Karen plans to keep the firm small and boutique-style and continue offering sound advice and service in the industry she knows and understands. Her parting piece of financial advice was to make sure your money is working for you. “I help ensure your money is working for you and not the banks and strive for my clients to have a stress-free time with their finance.” To find out more, go to www.kdfinancial.com.au or phone Karen on 4028 3083.

cherie jensen A 1 B o o kk e e p i n g

Cherie Jensen has grown her humble bookkeeping business into the successful local service we see today, saving her clients thousands of dollars along the way.

CAIRNS

A1 Bookkeeping is a small local business quickly growing into a well- established Cairns/Port Douglas/ Innisfail and Tablelands mobile bookkeeping company offering a range of bookkeeping services including management of debtors & creditors, bank reconciliations, payroll (small or large), BAS/ IAS, selling and training of all MYOB Products & upgrades. A1 Bookkeeping is an all female team hand-selected by Cherie that understands their clients’ needs and wants. This is what has separated them from traditional bookkeepers. Initially Cherie meets with all her clients, and continuously throughout the process, it’s about gaining respect and implementing a transparent workable system to ensure her clients get what they want, but A1 Bookkeeping can also lead the client through stressful times and get them back into a clearer position showing them better flow within their own business. Cherie realised that the market needed a more dependable and affordable alternative than regular in-house bookkeepers, so she went alone and started A1. The need for A1 wasn’t just to start a business as she realised with her young growing family she needed quality time with them as they grew, but she also wanted to be amongst businesses and keep their books in order. Ironically this is the key force in what drives her and A1, as life imitates art her needs were

the same as her future clients. Clients want to have a transparent consistent flow and also enjoy life. Cherie laughs when asked why bookkeeping, but in her business as in life she says, it’s simple – listen, apply and act. A1 has a proven local history within Cairns and this has only happened recently. In one instance A1 was approached by a new business owner that wanted independent assistance in bookkeeping. A1 joined the firm externally and with Cherie’s coaching helped the firm find inefficiencies saving the client tens of thousands of dollars. In another example A1 joined a small business and helped them through the BAS process that had been going in a negative direction for more than two years. Today A1 specialise in BAS with their own A1 Accountant to lift their profile from a small bookkeeping firm to a mid-sized firm with a qualified accountant employed internally. Cherie has found looking after her staff and treating them with the utmost respect they deserve, has rewarded A1 with business growth that has helped shape the business now able to offer a relief bookkeeper service for when your bookkeeper is away sick, on holidays or even maternity leave so your books are always up to date and BAS deadlines are met. Q. I have badly damaged skin from years in the sun, and also very large pores. I’m don’t want to have laser treatments, are there other alternatives? A. SKIN NEEDLING PROVIDES RESULTS SIMILAR TO LASER RESURFACING, DERMABRASION, AND DEEP CHEMICAL PEELS, BUT AT A FRACTION OF THE COST AND WITH MINIMAL OR ZERO DOWNTIME. IT IS MUCH LESS INVASIVE AND DOESN’T REQUIRE THE REMOVAL OF THE EPIDERMIS. IT IS ALSO ONE OF THE FEW SKIN THERAPIES SUITABLE FOR TREATING ALL SKIN TYPES, INCLUDING SENSITIVE, ETHNIC, AND ASIAN SKINS.

A

cylindrical barrel with precision engineered micro needles creates a multitude of tiny puncture wounds to the dermis, penetrating the top layers of skin without causing damage or bleeding, inducing the release of growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. Creating dermal damage without removal of the healthy epidermis, means the healing time is rapid and does not cause any comparable pain or post-treatment sensitivity to UV light.

The concept of Skin Needling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage, such as cuts, burns and other abrasions. Immediately after an injury occurs to the skin, our body reuses the damaged collagen and elastin fibres as well as other damaged skin components to produce new ones. Skin Needling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self repair mechanism by creating micro-“injuries” in the skin which trigger new collagen

Skin Needling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, can be used to treat the fragile skin around the eyes, mouth and on the neck, wrinkles and lines, lack of skin firmness and elasticity, scarring, acne and chicken pox scars, enlarged pores, sun damage, under-eye bags, stretch marks, and cellulite.

Now is the time to transform your skin!! The Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller is a convenient multipurpose device used for the treatment of various skin conditions such as wrinkles, scars, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, cellulite and stretch marks.Unlike ordinary stainless steel dermarollers, Medik8 micro needles are precision-engineered from titanium, which is an extremely hard metal that does not pit or become damaged like stainless steel after use.It has been hailed as “The magic wand of skin care”. Hidden Gem Keiko Murphy turned a career in publishing into a new and exciting role as owner of Village Lane retail space, Pouch.

O

riginally hailing from Tokyo, Keiko has been living in Cairns for more than 20 years and had been working as a Japanese magazine publisher for 16 years before realising she wanted a change. “Through my work, I interviewed producers and saw lots of great local products. When I handed over the business, the idea of starting my own shop that showcased the quality local things came naturally and Pouch was born in April 2012,” tells Keiko. The store, which is mostly made from local timber and old local materials, offers locally made and Australian products, such as coconut oil, soy candles, chocolate, jewellery and homewares, all hand picked by Keiko. “We also have a tearoom with local tea and conduct workshops and events,” adds Keiko, who wants Pouch to be retail base for a cultural and sustainable

way of life. “It is only new and small, but I try to make the space connect people with the region. In the shop or on the website, you see the producers stories.” While it has been challenging to get her brand out there, as the store itself is tucked away in Village Lane behind the Pullman International Hotel, Keiko celebrated the shop’s first anniversary with a market-style event. “We invited some local producers so that they could talk directly with customers about their products. It was such a happy atmosphere in and around the shop that day,” she recalls. With plans to collaborate with local producers and offer a one stop shop to taste, learn and discover produce as well as shop, Pouch is a great way to support the local community. “Local gift sets or hampers are an ideal Christmas gift to give a piece of Far North Queensland to loved ones,” adds Keiko.

hypnotising people!

I love being hypnotised myself which happened recently when I attended training at the National Guild of Hypnotists Annual Conference in Marlborough MA (just west of Boston). I know some people are still worried about being hypnotised. However after one session with me their fears are gone. Why? Because to be hypnotised is just being in a wonderful state of relaxation. It’s that simple. I can teach you to hypnotise yourself so at any time throughout a busy day you can take a minute or two and feel relaxed and re-vitalised again.

I help people deal with stress, anxiety, fears and phobias, grief and loss. I work with emotions as they drive us. So wouldn’t you like a happy cheerful bus driver rather than a fearful unhappy one? My passion however is all about weight and body image. At an alarming rate, Australia (including adults and children) are becoming an obese nation. Just look around you. Look down at your waist line now and see how you are going. We need to look at our lifestyles and make our health the number one priority. And that is what happens when you come to see me. I take a holistic approach to what I do. Hypnosis is all about clearing out old negative programming and replacing it with updated positive life affirming programs that the client themself has asked for. I also offer a 4 week Weight Loss group which is highly effective because of the group dynamic: Accountability, Motivation, Goal Achievement plus more. I call this “Healthy Living”. Please visit my website or email me for a complimentary DVD which will answer all of your questions.

There’s a dirty word that rears its ugly head in our vocabulary, causing anxiety, stress and poor health.

The

D

D

iet is a dirty word and one that should be erased from our minds, vocabularies and dictionaries – at least one meaning of the word. If you’re using the word to refer to restriction, fads and fasting it’s certainly doing more harm than good. There have been countless diets that have surfaced over the years, each one promising tanned and toned beach bodies, but often failing to deliver – think the grapefruit diet, soup diet and low-carb diet. Often these restrictive

Word

diets will make you feel far worse off: hungry, irritable and lethargic. Most people’s bodies need a balance of fats, carbs, grains, fruits and vegetables. If you’re in tune with your body, you’ll know what makes you feel energised, nourished and alive and what makes you feel sluggish, bloated or unwell. Seeing food as fuel and nourishment rather than good or bad or high or low fat is beneficial for long-term good eating habits. And remember, if you make something off limits you’ll want it even more. Moderation is the key.

s e t Ra

North r a F e in th

Recent reports show the unemployment rate in the Far North is at a 12-month high, but good news for the economy could bring those figures back down.

T

he unemployment rate in Cairns has certainly been concerning after an uncertain economy and dip in tourism. Despite the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicating unemployment rates were at 5 per cent in May this year, they’ve recently reached a 12-month high. This comes at a time when tourism has started to pick up, the real estate market is set for a boom and the general economy is on the up, creating more jobs and demand for skilled workers. If the Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort is approved, it is predicted to create 16,600 jobs at the peak of the construction and also promises to create training programs for youth through JCU. Once

constructed, the project would demand experienced workers, creating further jobs in the region. The casino also promises to boost tourism to the region, which is important for all companies in the tourism industry, including local restaurants and cafes. With the predicted growth in the real estate market and increase in building approvals, properties both old and new are being snapped up on the market. This confidence in the market and increased activity means skilled builders, labourers, developers, architects, conveyancers and real estate agents would all be in demand. There’s also a flow-on effect for home lifestyle, furniture, whitegoods, removalists and those associated with the industry. There’s also talk of relocating

public servants to the Far North, increasing accessibility and trade links and other possibilities that could potentially give the economy a boost, increase jobs in the region and keep unemployment rates down. Living in the Far North, the areas of tourism, hospitality, construction and real estate are all great skill sets to invest in and there are plenty of local institutions, such as TAFE, that offer training and qualifications in these fields. If you have been out of work or looking to get into a career, investing in training and learning a skill set is undeniably valuable. There are also plenty of recruitment agencies that can help match your skills with an ideal job in the region. It’s never too late to learn.

There is nothing more confronting than the bared teeth and rumbling growl of a dog protecting its food. The cold stare, stiffening posture and physical defence is indicative of a behavioural problem commonly referred to as FOOD AGGRESSION.

I

n the wild these displays are common amongst the canine pack at meal time. This communication during feeding assists in reinforcing each animal’s position in the family unit. When the domestic dog imitates this behaviour it is not only very unnerving for the owner but can be very dangerous for anyone coming into contact with the dog when it is eating. This aggression may be obvious in young puppies or can develop over time as the dog matures. Some dogs will be comfortable with anyone approaching the food bowl but may become agitated and defensive of a bone. Dogs that bury food will often strongly defend the area where the treasure is hidden. In other cases simply presenting anything that resembles a meal results in the most

adorable family canine turning into a snarling monster! Train your puppy to become accustomed to people NEAR the food bowl. Place dry food in the bowl from your hand as the puppy is eating and quietly praise. It is not necessary to be constantly petting the pup as this type of interaction can stimulate a defensive response. Touching your dog when it is eating does not guarantee it will not become protective of its food. Encouraging children to partake in this activity will not ensure they are safe from being bitten and in fact may give them the impression it is OK to pat ANY dog when it is eating. I prefer to feed dogs in a “safe” area such as a crate or a separate part of the house or yard. Don’t leave food bowls lying around and follow a strict routine of

68

CairnsLife

presenting the meal, leave the dog to eat in peace and then remove the bowl. Give your dog a bone at a time when they can enjoy it without disturbance and then dispose of unfinished bones the next day. Safety is of the utmost importance when working with this type of behaviour. While it is possible to work with these dogs to reduce the scale of the aggression I am not convinced that any dog is totally cured. If your dog displays even the most subtle form of food related aggression consult a professional canine behaviourist immediately. Mama C O C O

Starting out at Rusty’s Markets selling their heavenly cakes, family-run Mama Coco has upped the ante with their fresh and fun approach to dining. This Westcourt hotspot is making all the right moves, dishing up breakfast, lunch and a new dinner menu of share plates, counter meals and on trend offerings with the hottest ingredients on the foodie scene right now. The Mediterranean-style menu also has Japanese flourishes from the Tetsuya’s trained executive chef, Davy O’Rourke, and is designed for flexibility and fun. Graze on some snacks like the smoky spiced almonds, Australian olives or toasted sourdough with lashings of heavenly housemade truffle butter; share a fresh seared squid salad with vibrant bursts of pomegranate or the perfect parcel of popcorn chicken, smashed avocado, corn salsa and pickled onions hugged by a corn tortilla. Moving on to the counter meals, it’s hard to pass up the jerk chicken with red papaya, which packs a serious chilli punch. The mussels with lemon basil rest on a pillow of creamy polenta while the almond-

crusted barramundi with kale, cucumber, tomato and quinoa ticks all the on-trend boxes. The rosemary fried chats presented in a paper bag are a theatrical touch by the welcoming and attentive staff while the watermelon and mint salad refreshes the palate. With all the sides and share plates to choose from, you may feel as though there’s no room for dessert, but the banana split with salted butter popcorn, vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of peanut butter fudge sauce is hard to pass up. There’s also the display of sweet treats that started it all, with dreamy offerings such as a layered carrot and mascarpone cake and a nostalgic coconut and raspberry slice. The local Westcourt eatery is currently BYO, but there are plans in the works for a liquor licence so you can expect more from the O’Rourke family, with Mama C overseeing both Mama Coco and sister business, The Clever Duck, as matriarch.

While all the dishes are prepared with love and influenced by the chefs’ backgrounds, Christuan says the duck a l’orange is a specialty with a beautiful confit meat enhanced by a sweet housemade orange sauce. The recent addition of a buzzing tapas bar offers a lounge-style feeling with plush black and vibrant red leather stools cementing the fact that the award-winning venue has something for everyone. Artist

of the month

S tephens Who are you and what type of art do you paint? I am a professional artist. I paint in both acrylic and oils on canvas. How long have you had your own galleries for? 20 years. I now have two galleries, one located in Kuranda and the other is in Palm Cove on Williams Esplanade. What jobs have you done other than being an artist? I have always been an artist. I won my first award at the age of 11 at a Victorian Art Exhibition. In 1971 I moved to Melbourne to study fine art and painting techniques at the Victorian Artists Society, where I completed advanced art courses. Why art? It’s very simple: this is my passion, I am self taught and I love it. What memorable responses have you had to your work? Before I opened my own galleries I had 30 sellout exhibitions throughout Australia. Another moment I am extremely proud of is when I won the Royal Overseas League Award. My winning painting was sent to London to represent Australia in a Commonwealth Exhibition which was opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The painting received high commendation by the judges from the Royal Academy of Arts. Also having had my paintings represented in the White House in America and Parliament House in Australia. What research do you do? Local views. I draw my inspiration from living in the tropics. Light, colour, beauty and diversity - the essentials of nature itself are a continuous source of inspiration for my work. In the course of my career I have developed two quite separate and very distinctive

styles of painting. Each has culminated from a particular environmental influence at a certain period of my life. As a young artist the evolution of my signature “sepia style” resulted in reflective work influence by country life. More recently, a sea change to North Queensland in 1992 saw a sudden burst of colour explode on my otherwise subtle palette. What is your dream project? I have my dream project already, which is owning my own art galleries. What work do you most enjoy doing? Painting nature. The comparative isolation of country living has complemented my personal, artistic development and has allowed me to create a unique style of art which predominantly focuses on Australian landscapes, country houses and streetscapes. Favourite or most inspirational place? Tropical North Queensland of course! What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? To keep doing what I do. My work has been exhibited internationally in London, England and in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the USA. I have originals represented in private and corporate collections throughout the world. Among my personal clients are heads of state including a US President, Australian Prime Ministers and Governor Generals, as well as many movie stars. My works are also represented in various large corporate collections including banks and oil companies. This is my passion, so to be told to keep doing what I do is the biggest complement I could possibly receive.

future Retirement may seem like a very distant light at a long and tiring tunnel, but there are things you can do now to set you up for the future.

81

W

hen you’re young, retirement can feel so far away it’s not even worth a second thought, but if you’re smart about your finances and lifestyle now you might be basking in the glow of retirement freedom earlier than you think. By law, employers must contribute to super funds, but what most people don’t realise is that contribution isn’t nearly enough to rely on come retirement day. To set yourself up for the retirement you’ve always dreamed of (think overseas vacations, trips around Australia in true grey nomad fashion or being a lady or man of leisure). If you contribute a small amount to your super fund every week, you’re 60-something year old self will be thanking you later. Likewise, renting seems to be

CairnsLife

an affordable way to live now, but when you’re weekly pay is gone and you’re still expected to cough up rent each week, things get a bit more difficult. Save for a home when you’re younger and by the time you plan on retiring you should be able to pay it off leaving only rates and utilities. While it may seem morbid, those depressing ads on television are there for a reason and funeral insurance for both yourself and partner is worth considering. Planning these things in advance will leave you free to explore the world or enjoy the simple things in life, like pottering around the garden, playing golf, getting lost in a book or strolling the beach with the warm sun on your skin and cool sand between your toes.

F

inancial security is the most common factor influencing people’s decision about when to retire, according to research released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for the 2006/07 financial year. “The problem is, without professional retirement planning advice, it’s near impossible for most people to know if they’re financially secure enough to provide for the retirement they want,” says Teresa Farrah from RI Advice Cairns, who has extensive experience as a financial adviser after more than 18 years in the financial services industry. “I have found the earlier an individual starts planning to grow their wealth the easier it is for them to achieve their dreams. Often I find individuals start thinking about their retirement maybe five years prior to retiring and if they had changed a few simple things in their life earlier, the prospect of having a comfortable retirement would have been more easily achieved.” While their retirement lump sum is likely to be the largest sum of money they’ve ever had and may seem like a fortune, when the impact of tax and inflation is considered and the fact the money might have to last for a retirement of greater than 20 years, the amount might not end up stretching far at all. “It’s important to think in advance about what sort of lifestyle you’re expecting in retirement and consider the costs,” Teresa says. While the Government age pension may offer some support, at a maximum of approximately

$21,000 a year for singles, it’s not something to aspire to by itself. According to The Association of Superannuation Funds research, in the June 2013 quarter, the cost of living for retired couples ranged from $32,656 to $56,406 a year depending on their lifestyles. When it comes to retiring, there are complex rules around tax, social security, investments and superannuation and so many ways to structure finances. People are also often concerned about the Government changes to superannuation, however Teresa advises while the proposed changes will affect different investors, the one thing that hasn’t changed is super is still taxed at concessional rates. Professional financial advisers can help people identify what sort of retirement lifestyle they want and how to structure their resources to make the most of tax and social security rules and ensure a reliable income. They can provide advice about how and where retirement savings should be put, how to get the most from superannuation and when to retire, as well as how to plan your estate so it’s distributed to who you want in the most effective manner. “If Australians only seek financial advice once in their life, planning for retirement is the time to do it and the earlier they seek advice, the more options they’ll have.”

A lot of cars look good when they’re a fraction closer to street level and guys in particular have been lowering their vehicles for years. Again, turning to professionals rather than cutting springs is definitely recommended and keep in mind the load you carry and the kind of clearance you need.

Get a Tint

Tinting your windows has many advantages, from heat reduction inside the vehicle to a decreased risk of sun exposure and a little more street cred. Take your car to a professional and select a tint that suits the car, the colour and your needs. Unless you know what you’re doing, never try this at home. It could end up as a bubbled up mess that’s no fun to remove.

LITTLE legends

ost of the lads on the Cairns United futsal team have been playing since they were just six years old and their efforts have paid off with an enviable record of wins. In state and national competition as a team they have played 24 games and won 19, drawn one and lost four. Earlier this year, a team of seven boys headed to Sydney for the 2013 Nationals competing against 13 other teams from across Australia and New Zealand – and the competition was tough. “We would have been one of the smallest teams in Sydney, as most of the other teams were between 8-10 players and as you can imagine January in Sydney is very hot temperature as high as 45 degrees,” tells coach Joel Burgess, who has been coaching the young team for two years. As the nationals progressed the team had to take on the Auckland team, the team everyone was trying to dodge. “Up to this point the team coming first in group two was the Auckland team and had scored almost 70 goals in six games and had not lost a game. We had scored 25, however had not given many goals to opposing teams either. The boys stayed positive and gave their all in this game, the court was surrounded by spectators and most were cheering for the team from Cairns.”

These budding young sportsmen are putting Cairns on the map in the futsal scene and taking on the Australian Futsul National Championships again to defend their title.

The boys went on to win the game 7-4, progressing to the final and taking on the Brisbane team for what was set to be a close game. “The game was very tight, but the boys didn’t give up, and we were eventually crowned National Champions after a 1-0 victory. The atmosphere was unbelievable as all of the other Cairns teams ran down on to the court to celebrate with the boys; some of the players were clearly overwhelmed with excitement,” tells the passionate coach. Out of the 2013 National Championships, seven FNQ teams headed down and four came back national champions. Fundraising for the trip to the 2014 Championships has begun in earnest and a special thanks to the hard-working parents who spend lots of their time helping to raise funds to get their boys to the finals, as well as the sponsors for this year. “The sponsors, Cheshire Contractors, Gilligan’s, LDI Constructions, NQ Ortho, Flannigan’s Consultancy, Cairns Tyre Specialist, Far North Mowing Service and Steven Ross Patisserie have been a great support in our fund raising efforts.”

If any other businesses would like to help through sponsorship, they can call Joel Burgess on 0417763454.

Next year Ryan Butterworth, Ben Della Ricca, Jacob Burgess, Ewan White, Sam Holiday, Griffin Trevett-Lyall, Stuart Fogelis and Kaito Kuwano will be heading to the 2014 Nationals in Sydney to represent Cairns. “Six of the seven boys are returning to defend their title; we have had two new additions, so this time we will have eight players travelling. It would be great to win again so that Australia knows that the little country squad from Cairns are definite contenders against Australiawide teams.”

Cairns Sun Air & Sound has had a significant revamp of late, updating their shop to cater to the changing market and trading as Air Sound & Vision, but retaining their focus on specialised quality service.

The McLeod St business has been operating in Cairns since 1983 and is a local institution, holding the title of the largest specialised car audio dealer in North Qld.
As client demands changed over the 30-year history, the aging store was struggling to stay modern and fresh until current owner Kirk Cumming breathed a new life into the business. “I started working for Cairns Sun Air & Sound in the workshop eight years ago,” tells Kirk, who knows the business well and was ready for a new challenge, wanting to take it to the next level. He bought the business just over a year ago and set to work upgrading the shop to reflect what they offer today.
“The sun in Cairns Sun Air & Sound used to stand for sun roofs,” he explains. “Now air is for air conditioning repairs and custom systems. Sound is for audio, both car and marine, UHF radios and mobile phone bluetooth kits and antennas. Vision stands for in car navigation systems, reverse

cameras & screens, rear seat entertainment and our newest addition 4x4 lighting with a large range of HID and LED options from Ultra Vision and Hella” tells Kirk, who is the only specialist Alpine dealer north of Townsville as well as Australias oldest Alpine dealer. “The brands are ones we use ourselves. We’ve sought them out over 30 years and we know they work.”
Over an eightmonth period, the store from the front right through to the workshop out the back has been completely refitted. With a totally new and modern shopfront being fitted early this month, step inside to find a sleek floor replacing the well-trod old carpet, bright blue walls and the latest in display boards with products to suit any budget. The workshop also has been expanded and refit to provide a safe and clean workplace.
“It looks completely different. Some people come in and think they’ve walked into the wrong shop,” laughs Kirk, who still likes to go back to his roots and work alongside the guys in the on-site workshop in addition to running the business. “Working in all

areas of the shop helps me keep high standards and good relationships with my staff.”
With six staff in total, Kirk says they’re a wealth of experience and knowledge and are there because they are genuinely interested in the business and what they offer, which means when you come in you’re dealing with someone who knows what they’re talking about. “We have good staff. Two have been here for almost 20 years. We are able to help people from simple jobs right through to complex custom installations of entertainment systems and air conditioning systems for classic and show cars.” With all the facilities and specialised knowledge in the CBD and a lot more than speakers on offer, there’s no need to leave the city or not support local business. “We’re specialised and local and we’re not a chain. The previous owner built it up to what it was, but I wanted to change the image of the car audio shop and make our image match what we do,” confirms Kirk. “This is the first step of our future direction and we’ll continue to provide solutions, listen to our customers and let them drive our direction.”

CRUISE

RIDER OF THE

MONTH Hi Steve! Tell us a little about yourself: Steven Davies, 45 years old, Married with 2 children, James age 9 and Ella aged 7. My wife Paula and I manage our family business - Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises. At what age did you get involved with BMX riding and why? I have ridden a bike since I was a toddler and got involved in BMX racing for many years as a kid. I used to spend every spare moment on a bike and just loved it. I stopped riding at around 18 years old and have only taken it up again in the last 3 years. Do you have a favourite brand that you prefer to ride? Favourite brand is Specialized, just love the range of bikes at Pump and Pedals and the customer service makes shopping there my favourite retail therapy. Are you involved in a club in Cairns? I am a member of the Cairns Mountain Bike Club and want to join the Cairns Crocs Triathlon Club this year with the family. Do you have any sponsors and how do they benefit you? Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises has very kindly sponsored me for a few events so far by paying for the entry fees.

What are some competitions you’ve participated in and where did you place? Most events I enter are social and fundraising rides. As a team we did quite well in the Port Douglas 1/2 Triathlon and the Cairns 70.3 Triathlon and am training hard to improve this year. I love entering as many events as I can, just to be part of the atmosphere and great social side. Do you have a competition coming up? Next week I am going to Adelaide to do some social riding at the Tour Down Under. The next race I am training for is the RRR mountain bike race in May, followed by the Coral Coast Triathlon and the Cairns 70.3 Triathlon in June in a team. How do you prepare for a race? I have a great personal trainer Michael Crawford who is a triathlete and is helping me to improve my strength and fitness. I try and do as much riding as I can squeeze in around work and family. What do you find rewarding about the sport? Bike riding has so much variety. I love exploring on the mountain bike to places I would never normally go to. Riding on the road in big events or groups is a great thrill as well. I just love riding with friends and am always meeting new people. It’s a great way to stay fit while having fun.

FOR OUR TROPICAL CLIMATE When looking at house plans make sure you are talking to someone who genuinely cares about how the outdoor climate can affect your level of comfort inside your home rather than some one who simply wants to sell you a home. There is a huge amount of relevant information on the internet to help determine the best aspect for your home on your land. Sometimes it might be the choice between one block and another as to how you can position your home on the block. This could easily be the deciding factor in which floor plan you use or which builder is for you. Since May 2010 new homes in Queensland are required to have a 6 star energy rating and this can be achieved in a number of ways. With some intelligent choices and research it’s possible to combat some of these rising energy costs and reduce the home’s impact on our environment. There are 4 designated climatic regions in Queensland and we in Cairns, of course, live in the Tropical Region. This means that, according to the Qld Government, in summer we have hot, humid days and warm nights and in winter comfortable days with cool nights. That’s a fairly good description of our weather patterns. It’s all

about saving energy any way we can so careful planning now should save you a lot of money in the future. This means less $$ to run your home and more $$ in your pocket. A well designed home doesn’t necessarily mean an expensive one. Many elements are very cost effective, especially if you are planning a long term home. We built the ‘Queenslander’ style home in the past for a reason - they worked. In recent years more people have chosen to build single storey, masonry block homes as this is a more cost effective construction method, but remember that elevated homes have an ability to catch more breezes. There are many home designs that have complex roofs which not only make it more expensive to build initially but will make the future installation of solar PV panels, solar hot water or rain water collection more expensive and difficult. When building your single storey home the orientation on the land is one of the most important factors in energy efficient home design. Good size eaves, planned landscaping, cross flow ventilation through the home, different building materials and style of windows and their location are all elements of good home planning for our tropical climate.

WITH THE SIMPLE COST OF LIVING IN OUR HOMES INCREASING, IT MAKES SENSE TO HAVE A HOME DESIGNED TO WORK WITH NATURE’S OWN STRENGTHS TO MAKE OUR HOMES MORE COMFORTABLE AND COST EFFICIENT.

Take the time to do a little research yourself so that when you are talking to your builder or designer you can determine whether or not they are experienced in these good design principles or simply selling you a house. Then you can sit back, relax and enjoy your new home knowing that you have taken advantage of all the options available to you.
