An Eye for OPPORTUNITY

Omni Property Queensland

By Josie Rose

“I’m good at what I do because I love what I do. I love what I do because I’m good at what I do.” This is an affirmation that Lisa Costa is proud to share, and it’s true; she is good at what she does. Lisa Costa is the managing director and principal of Omni Property Queensland; the real estate company that is all about creating a truly personal experience. Lisa has a varied business background which includes owning four pubs in Europe, leasing banana farms, part owner of a motorcycle shop and managing cleaning companies. Her motivation and savvy approach to business have led her to explore many different avenues and opportunities, with her most recent venture being real estate. Omni Property Queensland was a natural industry progression from Lisa’s partners building company, coupled with her lifelong passion for real estate and keen eye for business opportunities. “I can see opportunities in everything and I’m always thinking outside the square. I think that’s why I’m good at business”, says Lisa. Lisa oversees a tightknit team of professional property managers, all of whom possess a genuine love of real estate. Omni Property Management specialises in buying, selling, investing and renting and their goal is to make a positive difference in people’s lives. Omni Property Management is renowned for its exceptional customer service and professional team, all of whom have vast personal experience in real estate. “All of our property managers, including myself, are property owners and investors, so we’re able to offer clients an intimate knowledge of local markets and property trends.” Investment services include facilities management, asset management and property management as well as rentals, selling and buying. “Whether it’s a family home, holiday retreat or an investment property, we’re committed to ensuring our clients find exactly what they’re looking for.” Lisa is proud of her company and its progression. “We’re growing beautifully”, says Lisa, “But I couldn’t do it without my team. I value my staff and the strong relationships I am building with my clients, tenants and landlords. I’m doing something I love and that I am good at. I always endeavour to do everything to the absolute best of my ability.” Lisa’s advice for succeeding in business is to be surrounded by people who think outside the square. “Be open to suggestion but follow your own instincts and think about what you would you do if you couldn’t fail. Successful people do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, whether they want to or not.” For a limited time, Omni Property Management are offering 3 months free property management with no lock in contracts, and Omni Property Queensland can organise the transition from your current Agent for you. A Women’s World by Juliette Henderson

It’s the 21st century and girl power is alive and well! These days, being a working woman doesn’t mean being restricted to taking on traditionally female roles like office administration or nursing. There’s nothing wrong with those careers of course, it’s just now we have so many more options, and that’s just it – it’s our choice!

It’s not so long ago that it would have been unthinkable to see a women in a tradesperson’s role or pounding the pavements in the police force [the first female police officer sworn in in 1915, but they had to resign as soon as they got married!]. Nowadays, most people don’t bat an eyelid when a policewoman breathalyses them or the person that shows up to rewire their house or unclog the drains is sporting a ponytail! In the 70s and 80s, the so-called “women’s movement” made great strides towards narrowing the gender divide in the work place. To this day, however, the mystery remains as to why women [in general] earn 25% less than their male counterparts. [Although there is some argument to suggest this is more due to their gender. Mmm really?] To be fair, though men often have difficulty crossing over into roles traditionally perceived as female, such as childcare and midwifery – although this to is changing. While there are those who still carry a

torch for the idea of “a man doing man’s job” [in industries like construction for instance], more and more women are making their mark in careers like engineering, architecture, automotive repairs, and trades like plumbing, electrics and carpentry. The fairer sex is even making inroads into the mining industry, operating heavy machinery and getting on the tools with blokes two times their size. While some women take on the roles solely with the aim of securing a higher wage, in fact, studies show that female personality types are very well suited to jobs requiring problem-solving skills – like carpentry or electrics. The truth is, brute strength and physical capabilities aside, there aren’t too many careers that need to be strictly gender specific – and women all over the world are proving it. Nonetheless, women are still under represented In many fields like technology, trades and the sciences. In those very lucrative occupations there is scope for a previously unheard of earning

power for women. Bears some thinking about doesn’t it ladies? But it’s not all about making a point or making a buck, and even though we know we can work like a man doesn’t mean we want to act like on too. Oh no, part of being a modern, emancipated women is knowing how to walk that tightrope between a successful career and a fulfilling personal life as well. Us girls know only too well the benefits of pampering and “me time”, and we recognise that, actually, we can have it all – we just need to find the right balance, for us. But whether it’s a CEO of a multi national techno-giant, getting dirty and playing with the big boys in the mining industry or running a successful business, women have never had more opportunities available to them. And, as all our lovely ladies who feature in our “Women’s World” stories this month prove, there are plenty of sisters out there doing it for themselves in the Cairns community.

Irene COSTA DRESSMAKER Irene Costa has been helping Queensland brides find the perfect gown for their special day for the past 40 years. But the job as owner of Irene Costa Devine Bridal goes far beyond making, selling and adjusting dresses. As each wedding approaches, emotions run high, and Irene often finds herself offering brides advice, guidance and even a shoulder to cry on. “They become like family, and quite often you find yourself helping out with a lot more than just the dress,” she said. “You have to be able to really listen to people, and I like to put people together who are in the same situation. “Just recently I had an absolutely beautiful girl help another bride immensely with a few little problems she was having. They are able to talk together and when they see they’re not the only one going through it, it really helps. They feel so much better, so much more at ease. It’s beautiful to see. ” A self-taught dressmaker, Irene honed her craft making dolls clothes in the 1970s, before progressing to designing and making wedding

gowns on her family farm at Tolga. Her home-based business flourished after her own wedding, and she balanced dressmaking with helping on the farm and raising her four children. Irene opened her first retail store in Tolga 13 years ago and her Cairns store five years ago – expanding her range to include gowns by Maggie Sottero, Mori Lee, San Patrick, Stella York, Alfred Angelo and Peter Trends. Irene said dress styles had almost come full circle since she started in the industry, with recent trends returning to more classic elements of sleeves, straps and lace. Despite losing count of just how many brides she has worked with over the past four decades, Irene said each wedding was just as precious as the last. And she credits her lasting passion for the job to her love of dressmaking and being surrounded by beautiful things. “And the thrill of seeing the smile on the bride’s face when she’s found the dress she loves, it’s brilliant,” she said.“There’s something very special about what I do.

As a little girl, Emma Ratcliffe developed a passion for hair styling. As a teenager, she became interested owning her business, and at only 21 years of age, Emma, aka Miss M, combined her two loves and bought her own salon. With 8 years of hair dressing experience under her belt and the determination to become her own boss, Emma jumped at the opportunity to purchase an existing salon when it became available in October 2010. Despite her sweet disposition, Emma doesn’t hold back when it comes to reaching her goals and is adamant that this is just the beginning. “The world is your oyster”, she says. Even though she remains tight-lipped about her future endeavors, Emma says that Miss M Hair ‘n’ Beauty will be expanding in the next 12-18 months. “We’re still in the planning stages but I’m very excited about the future.” Emma admits to initially having doubts about how far she could take Miss M Hair ‘n’ Beauty due to low figures from the existing salon. “To be honest, I had pretty low expectations when

I bought this business, but I was gob-smacked at how quickly we developed a client base, and it’s continuing to grow”. By incorporating hair into the beauty salon, Emma has created a one-stop-shop in the heart of the city. Located at 3/21 Sheridan Street opposite Rusty’s Markets, Miss M Hair ‘n’ Beauty offers waxing, massage, manicures, pedicures, make-up, facials, all hair dressing services and the only stand-up solarium in Cairns. “The biggest challenge is ensuring I please everyone, but I have a great team who share my beliefs and values- we always go that extra mile for our clients.” It’s obvious that Emma is in her element as a business owner. “Every day is different and creative. It’s rewarding being able to transform a client’s look, which in turn transforms their day.” 15

Cazalys’

Carnival Celebration! By Josie Rose

Roll up, roll up! It’s a celebration- Carnival-style, and it’s going off with a bang! Your favorite local venue is celebrating its recent multi-million dollar transformation and you’re invited to experience the new and improved, innovative and very impressive ‘Cazalys’.

With a role likened to that of a Circus Ringleader, Cazalys’ General Manager, Jason Salecich, admits that his recent commitments have required him to perform a juggling act. Jason is a dedicated family-man, runs 4 clubs, has recently completed the Cairns Ironman and has overseen Cazalys’ extensive multi-million dollar renovations. But ensuring those renovations cater to a broad patron base has been a juggling act in its self- so it seems only fitting that Cazalys is celebrating its multi-million dollar makeover, carnival-style. For 40 years, Cazalys has remained a celebrated local venue, recognized for its community achievements at the 2012 Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence and awarded Queensland’s Club of the Year. Jason explains that the recently completed renovations are a reflection of the clubs commitment to evolving with the times and catering to changing demands. “Our renovations are about exceeding member expectations, the venue has to offer something for everyone and I think we have achieved that.” Boasting a world-class sporting stadium, everchanging live entertainment, exciting gaming lounge, chic new restaurant and out-of-this-world children’s entertainment area, Cazalys has taken centre stage and Cairns is applauding. “Cazalys is definitely not your stereotypical club. The new renovations were carefully considered from the lighting, furniture and state-of-the-art children’s play centre. The new facilities have created a warm atmosphere for families while keeping the gaming room private and discreet.” Women today make the majority of household decisions when it comes to the families’ social

16

activities so Cazalys has ensured their renovations appeal and cater to women. Ladies can now enjoy the Sparkling High-tea on Saturdays or enjoy coffee with friends in the chic and modern café - all while the kids make new friends, learn new skills and have a ball in the innovative and exciting Kids Club. “Whatever preconceived notions you have about clubs - throw them out. Clubs are changing. While traditionally clubs have been a man’s domain, the key to success lies in catering to families”, explains Karen Adams, Cazalys’ Marketing Manager. Part of Cazalys’ success and celebrated reputation is due to its unyielding support of the local community. Through donations and grants, the club provides over two million dollars a year to the local community in cash and kind support. “Giving back to the community is a big part of who we are and we’re proud of that.” After years of extensive planning and renovations, the new restaurant, café and Kids Club are now open and have already received rave reviews. Become a member and celebrate with Cazalys Carnival Specials throughout the month. There are $25,000 in prizes to be won and a Mazda 2 up for grabs. With 27,500 members at present, Jason says that Cazalys will always continue to provide excellent facilities and service. So whether you’re meeting friends for coffee, watching the game or gathering the whole family together for dinner, deciding on a venue is no longer a juggling act as Cazalys has it all. So come on down and enjoy the Carnival as Cazalys celebrates the launch of the most modern and diverse club in Cairns

The business has grown rapidly by word of mouth, recommendation and Nathan’s reputation for building the best; a reputation underscored by a phenomenal swag of awards. “Our clients have a budget, and it is our job to meet that, without compromising the quality or the unique style they are after.” Julie emphasizes. “It is very rewarding to achieve not only our goal, but our client’s goal - a spectacular home, on time and on budget.” “When we build a home for a client I love to interact on a personal level. Both Nathan and I take them through the process of aiding the client in the selection of all the fixtures & fittings and make this process an enjoyable experience.” “When a client asks whether we can build a particular style of house we just say: ‘ yes of course we can’. We offer flexibility with both our in house design and also working with architects & other designers.” “Nathan’s attention to detail is impeccable, and people just fall in love with what he does.” Julie enthuses, “ I have taken on the marketing role so he can continue to concentrate on the building and designing side.” While the business is well known for its award winning top of the market houses Nathan Verri, whose family name is synonymous with North Queensland, also builds for more modest budgets with projects ranging from the $1.8 million house recently completed in Port Douglas to the $190,000 house at Cooya Beach. Julie has already brought her own style to the business coordinating the creation of promotional material and integrating her love of photography into the advertising and the web presence to further develop the company’s image. Annie’s I nstinct By Josie Rose

“If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be where I am now, I would have laughed at you.” 10 years ago, Annie Gillow’s husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away in 2007. “Rob had always encouraged me and given me the confidence to act on my instincts.” 12 months after his death, Annie’s instincts told her it was time to relocate. “I felt there was something else out there, and without much effect, it all fell into place when I rediscovered Cairns. If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be where I am now, I would have laughed at you.” While travelling back and forth from her Television Production contracts in Brisbane, Annie fell in love with Palm Cove. “I wanted to stay on terra firma and needed something to sink my teeth into- I was ready for a change.” Annie came across a boutique in Palm Cove. “It was the ideal location and offered some great brands, although it needed improvement.” Acting on her instincts, Annie went about researching, sorting brands, flying interstate and asking a tone of questions. “The end result was the day I officially took over the boutique- the 18th of August 2008- showcasing new stock, a fresh feel and a bit of cheekiness to boot.” As time went by and customers kept returning, Annie decided it was time to open a second boutique, this time, in Cairns. “Currently I have 2 boutiques - one at the Boland’s Centre in Spence Street, Cairns, and my original in Palm Cove overlooking the Coral Sea.”

21

Annie takes great pride in her boutiques, her staff and in helping others dress in a comfortable and suitable way, no matter what the occasion, no matter what the size. “At Annie’s Boutique’s we put 100 per cent into finding what’s needed for our customers. Shopping should be serious, yet it should be fun… serious fun! I try to create this atmosphere.” At Annie’s Boutiques you’ll be inspired and tempted by the stunning range of styles, colours, fashion and accessories, and Annie’s is not ostentatiousit’s warm and friendly, for everyone, every budget and every occasion. “We love to provide the best bargains and suitable basics, yet we can also pull out a wonderful garden party frock, office outfit, magnificent, designer silk kaftan or stunning evening dress.” Annie’s Motto is, “fashion that turns heads” and that is exactly what Annie’s Boutiques specialise in. “I am there for YOU, to provide headturning outfits that suit you in shape, colour, fabric, style and are age appropriate.” “I don’t make decisions lightly- my boutiques are my life”, says Annie who has recently advertised for a Personal Assistant. “Now that I’m running 2 boutiques there just isn’t enough time in the day”, she laughs. Despite losing her husband, Annie feels privileged to be helping others and to have found something she’s so passionate about. “Women do have a 6th sense- so don’t be afraid to use it.”

Joan Wilson Sassi Shoes

Women In Business

SassiShoes By Kate van Eck

Since opening its doors eight years ago, Sassi Shoes has played an instrumental part in transforming Grafton Street into to the vibrant fashion hub we know today. Its owner, Joan Wilson combines a positive, energetic attitude with extensive business experience, to deliver quality products with a service second to none. Together with her team of helpful, professional staff, she’s created a stylish boutique that’s won the hearts of the women of Cairns. Throughout her working life, Joan has tried her hand at a number of occupations and business ventures. “I started out in hairdressing until I found out I was allergic to the chemicals,” she laughs. “I then spent some time doing payroll and office duties before later moving to retail.” After relocating from the UK to PNG 25 years ago, she settled in Cairns soon after when her oldest child was ready to start school. “We’ve had our finger in a lot of pies over the years,” she says. “Plus my husband has continued to commute to PNG to manage our business there throughout that time.” Now with a loyal customer base that’s supported it through tough economic times, Joan says Sassi Shoes was first established to provide an alternative to women in the region. “I saw a gap in the market and thought that Cairns really needed quality a shoe store. Unfortunately a few other people saw it at the same time,” she laughs. Attributing the boutique’s success to quality, consistency and customer service, she says anyone can offer shoes but it’s important to have the personal approach to go with it. “If you have 22

a good relationship with a customer and know their style and know their size – that’s more convenient to them than anything else,” she says. With a team of five including herself, Joan says the secret to creating a wonderful working culture is finding the right mix. “We’ve got June who’s been working in shoes for about 35 years and is a real service-oriented salesperson. And then there’s Dorothy who was one of PNG’s first fully trained air hostesses – also with a customer service background.” In order to get the balance right, Joan has also sourced two younger women whose enthusiasm and fashion sense compliment the rest of the team. ”Leah’s got a tonne of energy and Rowena who’s in Grade Twelve is a smart cookie getting the benefit of working with the others,” she says. While Joan still believes that nothing compares to the boutique experience, she realizes more and more customers are exploring the option of online shopping. “There’s a perception out there that online shopping is based on price and convenience,” she says. “But evidence suggests the top reason customers go online is for quality.” With that in mind, she has made the bold move of recently buying into one of Australia’s largest online stores. “It’s an exciting change but we are still tying it in with the same philosophy of Sassi,” she says. “You’ve got to have integrity in what you’re selling and believe in your product. You’ve also got to move with the times or someone will take your market share,” she laughs.

HEALTH Naturally

Natural therapies are fast becoming the preferred choice of treatment for people living with illness, allergies and intolerances.

By Michelle Dryburgh

Cairns naturopathy clinic Health Naturally can help restore balance and vitality to the lives of people with these conditions, and a range of other health complaints. Owner and naturopath Nyree Banks said her treatments could also benefit people suffering from fatigue, stress, headaches, skin conditions, gastrointestinal distress, fertility and hormonal issues, even children’s behavioural problems and those wanting to lose weight. “You don’t have to wake up tired, or struggle to get to sleep, or live in pain from digestive issues,” she said. “These complaints can all be treated naturally, simply and effectively with naturopathy.” But the focus of Health Naturally goes far beyond simply treating symptoms. faceTODAY One of Queensland’s leading cosmetic clinics has brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the heart of Cairns. But Face Today’s chic new Grafton Street clinic isn’t reserved for just the movie star elite. In fact founder Nicole Belle and business partner Helen Koi say most of their Cairns clients are simply ‘the woman or man next door’. “Compared to our Sydney clients, we see a lot more sun damage in Cairns,” Nicole said. “They’re not movie stars or models, just everyday people wanting to look and feel their very best.” Nicole has a lifelong passion for improving the health of others, and began her career in nursing as a local Cairns girl at the age of 16. Now with 40 years’ experience in the industry, Nicole is one of Australia’s top cosmetic injectors and trains industry professionals nation-wide and overseas. Nicole has also been selected to speak at presentations around the globe, and will represent Australia at a lecture on platelet rich plasma, or ‘Vampire treatment’, at the 5th international Biobridge Conference in Venice this September. “I never expected to be speaking on a world stage doing what I’m doing,” Nicole said. “This occupation is very much a dream come true.” Despite her busy schedule, Nicole travels between Sydney and Cairns each month to treat clients and spend time with family – including her three sisters and niece who also work in the Cairns clinic, including mother-daughter duo Kerie Jackson and Tami Shervey. “It’s a beautiful environment to work in because we’re all family, best friends, god mothers to each other’s children,” she said. “And every new patient we see becomes a part of that family. 25

“Often they stay with us for years, so you really get to know their story, care about them and share their journey. As they start to feel better about the way they look, they walk a bit taller, smile more, and that has a fantastic domino effect on everyone.” Face Today clients can choose from a selection of non-invasive non-surgical anti-ageing and cosmetic procedures, including the platelet rich plasma treatment which Nicole believes is the ‘fountain of youth’. General manager Helen Koi said the Face Today team embraced a holistic approach to anti-ageing, also providing medi-facial infusions, massage treatments and education on optimum nutrition, hydration and skincare. “Our treatments are not just about correction, but also prevention, and helping our clients be healthier and happier on the inside and out,” she said. “There’s a very strong connection between how you look and how you feel.” The result of this all-encompassing approach to achieving optimum health and beauty, Nicole says is a ‘subtle, youthful, fresh’ appearance. “There is an art to looking at a face and knowing what changes will make it look more beautiful,” she said. “Those changes are so gentle even our clients’ closest friends would never know, they just notice they’re looking fresher.” “But because they’re so happy with the result they usually tell their friends and send them to see us. And they can’t wait to see what we can do for them!”

Stacey Young BDO

Winner of Manager

in business By Kate van Eck

When at the age of five her dad told her that one day she would be a career woman, Stacey Young didn’t know what a career woman was. Now, as Chief Administrative Officer at BDO she is writing her own definition. Recently named InCapital Advisers Manager-In-Business Woman of the Year 2013 at the Cairns Business Women’s Awards, Stacey hopes to empower others to achieve their full potential. “I am delighted to be recognised through this prestigious award, celebrating the achievements of amazing women within our region. I hope that through this, I can inspire other women to back themselves and realise their dreams,” Stacey comments. Originally from the Atherton Tablelands, Stacey joined BDO as a junior receptionist in 2003. While initially unsure of which career path to pursue, she has since worked her way up to her current senior management position. “The firm supported me through my business degree at USQ in Toowoomba which I completed by correspondence while working full-time,” she says. “At the time I enrolled, I really had no idea where I would end up,” Stacey says. Stacey’s rise to the top was a rapid one that included being appointed HR Manager at just 24 years of age. “I received a lot of mentoring along the way and am fortunate that the firm has a strong development program. I also have the opportunity to learn from each of our seven Partners every day, which I find invaluable.” In 2010, Stacey took on the role of HR, Marketing & Administration Manager before being appointed Chief Administrative Officer in April this year. “I often say, that I have not had the need to change employers as the typical Gen Y stereotype indicates, I have had six different roles at BDO over the time I have been with the firm,” Stacey says. As part of the fifth largest accounting network worldwide, BDO Nth Qld is unique, having access to a global network while also tapping into over 100 years’ local experience in Cairns. Stacey describes BDO as a flexible firm that is supportive of their employees’ lives. “Provided you’re willing to put in the work, you will be recognised and rewarded,” she says. “The firm is committed to developing future leaders while maintaining a local approach to business.” In her role, Stacey’s main objective is to run things as efficiently as possible while also developing staff members within the organisation to deliver exceptional service to BDO clients. “I’ve had some amazing opportunities in my career and I get a lot of fulfillment out of seeing others develop,” she says. While currently completing her post-graduate studies, Stacey also sits on the Young Managers Advisory Board with the Australian Institute of Management, and is Vice Chair of Worklink. When asked how she fits everything in, Stacey says “I could not achieve what I have without the support of my husband Tahl, my family and my friends.” While she admits opportunities often come up from being in the right place at the right time, she’s also a great believer in making her own luck. “It’s important to put in the time and be passionate and motivated about what you do,” she says. “I try to make the most of every opportunity and be the best version of myself.”

Wordsmiths of the

Modern Age By Josie Rose

Words are powerful, especially when used effectively. No matter how genius a concept or how innovative an idea, without the written word, communication is lost. In business, using industry-specific language to communicate messages, ideas and statements is imperative to being noticed, understood and listened to. As the CEO and owner of CorpoWrite, Elisa Gilmore has based her business around her passion and talent for writing. Formerly a Principal and Deputy Principal for Education Queensland, Elisa realised her true passion was writing and established CorpoWrite in 2010. Elisa now has an extensive and impressive portfolio of work and was a finalist in the 2013 Cairns Businesswoman of the Year. Sarah Barber is CorpoWrite’s General Manager and shares Elisa’s passion for writing and literacy. With a background in tourism, marketing and recruitment, Sarah possesses the experience and skills to ensure CorpoWrite reaches its full potential. Even though CorpoWrite is based in Cairns, its services are available worldwide. “We have an amazing vision for the business”, says Elisa. “Our business catchcry is ‘world domination’, which is not unrealistic due to the structure of CorpoWrite - everything can be done electronically.” CorpoWrite has a broad range of clients including internationally, and Elisa and Sarah endeavour to establish CorpoWrite offices in London and New York in the future. CorpoWrite offers professional writing services for all industries including government agencies, the motor vehicle industry, trades, manufacturers, the mining industry and multi-national companies. Services include resume and

speech writing, web content development, website reviews, executive and business profiles, press releases, proofreading, brochures and editing. “I’m constantly developing my writing skills and researching grammar, spelling, language usage and the ways in which different sectors use and access language”, says Elisa. “Clients don’t get ‘generic’ when they come to CorpoWrite; they get tailored and responsive.” With no physical barriers limiting CorpoWrite’s progression to a world stage, Elisa and Sarah have no doubt they will reach their goal of operating on an international scale. “Due to the nature of the business we are not restricted or limited by distance or time differences. We move and progress with technology therefore we are flexible in meeting client needs.” CorpoWrite operates with an emphasis on high standards and with a focus on individual needs and requirements. “We ensure that the messages we’re putting out there are pitched appropriately and of a high quality, and we only employ degree qualified writers who are then personally trained by Elisa. Nothing is sent to a client unless it’s been approved by us”, explains Sarah. With a 63 per cent referral rate and clients utilising CorpoWrite’s services on a global scale, these ‘word-smiths of the modern age’ have already gained a reputation for professional, personalised, industry-specific writing. “We’re proud of what we’re doing and of where CorpoWrite is going.” To find out how the CorpoWrite team can assist with your business writing needs, call Sarah on 0499 272 775 or visit www.corpowrite.com 29

Lyndsey Crossland Cupcake Creations

Young Female Entrepreneur

Cupcake Creations is known for making sweet birthday treats but this year celebrated its own birthday with the taste of sweet success. Three years after first firing up the ovens, Cupcake Creations owner Lyndsey Crossland claimed the Cairns Business Women’s Club Award for Young Female Entrepreneur. Lyndsey said the award provided a timely boost in motivation as she prepares to expand the business. “It has helped me realise just how much I have achieved with my business and reassured me I am on the right track,” she said. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing how excited my customers are when they come to pick up their cupcakes.” Lyndsey was 26 when she decided on a career change, turning her hand to baking, and opening the first dedicated cupcake store in Cairns in 2010. Since then, the store’s selection has grown from two cupcake flavours to 11, and also includes edible cake toppers and cakes for birthdays, weddings, corporate events and other functions. Children can also throw on an apron and get a taste for baking at the new Cupcake Creations Birthday Parties, celebrating their special day creating their very own cupcake creation. 30

Q: Can you really reverse the effects of ageing without surgery?

A: Yes you can. Lasers can erase wrinkles and pigmentation, and lift. Cosmetics injectables such as muscle relaxants and fillers can soften expression lines , resculpt facial contours and mildly lift. And the Skin Remodelling System provides a true non surgical rejuvenation including tightening, smoothing and lifting.

The Skin Remodelling SystemTM integrates five non-invasive technologies designed to restore skin metabolic functions, taking years off the apperace of the skin without having to resort to painful surgical procedures. Scientific research has shown that tissues can be stimulated and reprogrammed to resume their natural, youthful functions. Every muscle and tissue layer is treated. How does the treatment work? Waves of energy produced by the same system gently vibrate and heat the collagen fibres, reorganising the skin’s scaffolding and stimulating new collagen growth. The effect is to tighten and rejuvinate the skin in the treated area, simultaneously therapeautiv

currents are transferred to the deeper layers to repair muscle tissue and restore muscle tone. The skin remodelling treatment uses widely recognised age reversal technologies for the first time in a single treatment that takes only 30 minutes. Results are visible after only one treatment: • Fine lines and wrinkles are noticeably softened. • The facial contour is lifted and toned without any adverse effects. • Skin tone exceptionally radiant.

Donna Woolcock

Pioneering

Dragonfly Wellness and Laser Clinic

Beauty By Josie Rose

“I had a vision and a goal- nothing was going to deter me.” Donna Woolcock is a pioneer in the beauty industry. As one of the first salon owners in Cairns to introduce spray tanning and IPL, Donna has always had the desire to be at the forefront of beauty treatments. During her 16 years as a renowned beauty therapist, Donna has earned a reputation for her high standards and results-driven services. Not satisfied with simply running a good salon, Donna’s vision was to establish and build the best salon boasting the latest beauty treatments with the most advanced technology on the market. Located at Smithfield shopping centre is ‘Dragonfly Clinic’- a product of Donna’s vision, unwavering determination and steadfast self-belief. Donna initially established her salon at Kewarra Beach where she employed one casual beauty therapist to work alongside her. Now, with a dedicated and highly qualified team of eight therapists, Donna says her vision has become a reality. “I am proud of what we’ve achieved. I have an exceptional team and I certainly couldn’t do this without them.” Donna has ensured her therapists are highly qualified laser safety officers and is excited to be launching three new, state-of-the-art machines including tattoo removal, LED Notox which is a non-invasive alternative to Botox and a new medical grade IPL machine for permanent hair reduction, vein removal and sun damage removal. “Dragonfly Clinic is more than just a beauty salon- we’re a results-driven clinic with medical-grade equipment.” Dragonfly Clinic has an exceptional reputation for superior customer service and offers a variety of advanced and results driven services including teeth whitening, skin rejuvenation, cellulite removal and non surgical face lift, as well as being the only platinum level Dermalogica salon in North Queensland. Having established a successful staff and a buoyant business, Donna now has more time to spend with her three year old daughter and pursue two further business ventures. “I am to become the exclusive Australian distributor of a natural American skin care range for children which I hope to introduce into stores around Australia, and am also in the process of establishing an online shop called Little Lambs to educate children about caring for their skin through a fun, interactive and educational forum.” Stepping into Dragonfly Clinic, you wouldn’t know you were in a shopping centre. The space is serene, enchanting and tranquil. Clients are offered gourmet coffee, a selection of teas and Donna’s freshly baked home-made cupcakes. “We pride ourselves on our unique and personal service. We truly care about our clients. Dragonfly Clinic’s philosophy is ‘prevention, intervention and rejuvenation’. Will continue to be innovative, professional and put our client’s needs first.” Call 4038 3462 or visit www.dragonflyclinic.com.au for the services menu and further information on how Dragonfly Clinic can exceed your expectations. 38

First established in London in 1946, Arup is the creation of engineer and philosopher Ove Arup whose revolutionary principals still guide the business to this day. The firm has since grown to incorporate 90 offices globally and is responsible for some of the most renowned landmarks in the world. Now celebrating 50 years in Australia and 20 years in Cairns, Senior Associate Robert Donnan reflects on his own experience within the firm that has literally made its mark on the world stage.

Originally from Bowen, Rob went on to study engineering at JCU Townsville, which ultimately changed his destiny in two ways. “In my final year I won a scholarship with Arup to work in London,” he says. “I also met my wife-tobe who was studying science at the time and we ended up travelling overseas together.” What started as an exciting work opportunity has resulted in a 26-year history with the company both nationally and internationally. “I spent the first ten years of my career at Arup working in different parts of the world,” he says. “I’ve had the benefit of seeing how things are done in other countries and gained an understanding and appreciation of different cultures.” Offering a broad range of professional services, Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists. Under the tagline: ‘We shape a better world’, its goal is to deliver smart design ideas with a social purpose. After first arriving on Australian shores in 1963 to undertake the structural design of the Sydney Opera House – which brought the firm to the world’s attention – it now has seven offices across the country. Most recently, its work for the 2012 London Olympics and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing (which included the iconic Bird’s Nest Stadium and The Water Cube structures), has reaffirmed its reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs to meet their clients’ aspirations. The firm’s approach to design is not the only aspect that could be viewed as unconventional. “We have a fairly unique ownership structure,” Rob says. “The firm is owned by our staff not external shareholders – which gives us the freedom to take on charitable projects as well as pursue the more risky projects that push the boundaries of technology and innovation.” Interestingly, in 1970 founder Ove Arup articulated his vision and philosophy for the firm in what’s known as ‘The Key Speech”, which has become somewhat of a bible for Arup employees. Clearly ahead of its time, the speech focuses on the importance of quality, honest dealings, and even sustainability – setting the tone for the firm’s future direction and versatility. After extensive experience across the globe, Rob eventually

relocated to Cairns in 1997 “At that stage we had won a national contract called The National Aboriginal Health Strategy which was a project delivering health infrastructure upgrades to Aboriginal communities,” he says. Throughout its 20-year history in Cairns, Arup has undertaken a number of significant projects in the region including the first upgrade of the Cairns Base Hospital and the second stage of the Cairns Convention Centre (following on from stage one in 1995), both in the late 90’s. “That was the catalyst for us to grow the buildings team here which has given us the opportunity to become involved in some really exciting projects,” Rob says. Specialising in structural engineering, civil engineering, project management, water engineering and traffic engineering, the Cairns office has also been involved in some cutting-edge environmental projects. “William McCormack Place was the first building in tropical Australia to receive a six star energy rating,” says Rob. “We also project managed the Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway in Innisfail which has a 400m long elevated walkway adjacent to the Johnstone River and a 40m high viewing tower.” And, as a result of the latest Cairns Base Hospital redevelopment, Rob says that many other Arup employees have had the opportunity to live in this wonderful part of the world while benefitting from working on such a large project. After the recent opening of its Townsville office, which is currently home to a staff of five, Arup is now deeply entrenched in the local community and a great supporter of charitable causes. “The Smith Family has set up an office locally on the basis of an Arup donation,” Rob says. “They’ve employed a learning for life co-ordinator to carry out early intervention work with disadvantaged kids.” Now, in celebration of its upcoming anniversaries, the firm is hosting a function from one of its landmark locations. To be held at the Convention Centre on Thursday the 25th of July, the event will showcase the firm’s history while providing live entertainment in the form of Australia’s Got Talent finalist, Rhys Tolhurst. “It’s a good opportunity to say thank you to the clients that have collaborated and supported us over the last 20 years,” he says.

Nicki Journeaux

Big Busted Beauty

Bella Forma

By Josie Rose

Nicki Journeaux understands the many challenges associated with being ‘blessed’ with a big bust and has come to the rescue of larger busted ladies Australia-wide. When Nicki first arrived in Australia she was shocked to discover the limited number of retailers catering for larger-busted ladies like herself. “After some time travelling around Australia in 2004, my bras were starting to wear out, but everything offered by Australian retailers was either poorly fitting or very unattractive”, remembers Nicki. “I became frustrated in my search but I was determined not to be forced into a nasty ‘Nanna style’ bra. I thought that if I was so desperately seeking pretty, larger cup sized bras and swimwear, surely other Australian women were too.” And so the idea for Bella Forma was born and women everywhere breathed a sigh of relief. With a background in IT and a determination to ‘support’ the bigger busted Australian woman, Nicki flew into action and launched Bella Forma as an on online store specialising in beautiful bras for bigger busts. Loosely translated, Bella Forma means ‘beautiful figure’ , and that is exactly what Nicki is most passionate about; helping and encouraging curvy, larger busted ladies to embrace their beautiful bodies with clothing and underwear that fits, feels good and ‘boosts’ confidence. Nicki smiles as she fondly reflects on her very first online sale in May 2005, and as demand grew, so did Nicki’s passion for celebrating curvaceous women. Bella Forma remains a successful online shop and is also located in the Pier shopping centre where Nicki proudly showcases beautifully fitting bras, feminine underwear and cup sized swimwear in sizes B to K cups, supportive sports and maternity bras and beautiful bridal corsets, and stocks leading brands including Panache, Triumph and Fayreform. Nicki has also recently extended her range to vintage inspired dresses designed to fit a larger bust yet flatter the waist and hips. “We’ve become a one-stop-shop for the larger busted woman”, says Nicki. “My staff and I are all trained fitters. We don’t just measure, we actually fit.” Bella Forma is the only specialist bra shop of its kind in Cairns to offer professional fitting, and Nicki says that she’s proud to have filled a gap in the market by providing Australian women access to pretty, larger size bras and clothing to make them feel feminine and beautiful. “We work closely with our customers to find the right shape and style. It’s not just about the size, but what women are looking for and what fits properly. It’s a very one-on-one personal experience and we ensure that all of our customers walk out feeling happy, confident and a million dollars because they’ve finally found a feminine bra that actually fits.” Visit Bella Forma online at www.bellaforma.com.au or instore at the Pier for a personal and professional fitting. 44

RICHARD

Hairdresser

of the month

LOW How long have you been a Hairdresser for? 16 years Why did you become a Hairdresser? I always wanted to be a hair stylist from quite a young age. As a child, I remember admiring the work of my sister in-law, Kelly and later being taken by my Mum for hair cuts at her local hair salon in Auckland. I would admire all the amazing colours and styles ... and strangely enough the beautiful smells from shampoos and other products. What Salon are you currently working at? I have been with Leigh Adsett’s beautiful ‘Beachfront Hair’ at Drift Resort, Cnr. Vievers Road and Williams Esplanade, Palm Cove for the last 2 years Hair trends are constantly changing, how do you keep up to date with the latest trends?. I attend as many hair shows as I can and I also use the internet and fashion magazines to keep informed of the latest styles here and abroad. This allows me to keep up to date with the current techniques and trends required. What do you enjoy most about your job? I really enjoy meeting people from all walks of life. Nothing pleases me more than to see my work being appreciated and seeing my clients leave the salon feeling great about themselves. Who do you look up to and why? I really don’t have any one particular person that I look up to. My inspiration comes from interacting with my clients, collegues and the many wonderful talents in our industry, from local to international. What’s the best thing about being a Hairdresser in Cairns? I really love the many clients that I have established during my time in Cairns. We have a great connection and they always keep a smile on my face. I also work in one of the most beautifully located salon in the Cairns region What current trends do you love the most? I love big glamour blow waves, and bringing back the old school twist blow waves What advice do you give to aspiring young Hairdressers? Hair styling is an ever evolving art form and new recruits to the industry need to be prepared to learn the long held tricks of the trade and to be open to the ever changing styles in overall fashion.

The Woman

BEHIND THE NAME

Angela Capitanio Ray White Cairns Central

By Josie Rose Angela Capitanio’s personal tragedy led to her discovery of self-belief and inner strength. After suddenly and unexpectedly losing her husband in 1982 after 20 years of marriage, the mother-of-three found commendable courage through her conviction to provide for her young family. Today, the name, ‘Angela Capitanio’, is synonymous with Cairns real estate success, and the woman, ‘Angela Capitanio’, is admired and respected by all who’ve been privileged to know her personally. Angela had not worked for 20 years during her marriage and her skills from her former role as a legal secretary had become archaic, but she was determined to prove to herself, her family and her community that she could overcome personal tragedy and forge forward. “It was a sink or swim situation”, remembers Angela. “But I was fortunate to stumble across a vocation that I liked and have now grown to love.” Despite initially selling real estate from the tea room of Ray White, Angela has become a force, an icon and a noted

name throughout Cairns and the property industry. “Would you believe it’s 26 years today that I’ve been in real estate”, smiles Angela, who’s proud to be the first person in the history of Ray White to settle over $100m of sales. Not surprisingly, Angela has been Cairns businesswoman of the year, a finalist in the Telstra businesswoman of the year and REIQ salesperson of the year three times. Angela prides herself on her ability to use her intuition to match people with property. “I don’t believe in showing numerous properties. I like to listen to people’s needs and match them with a suitable property.” Angela remains fulfilled by her career and has no plans of retiring any time soon. “Life is very fragile”, she says philosophically, “But the public will see me for a while yet.” Angela overcame personal hardship and has prospered as a businesswoman, a mother and an individual. “You have to believe in yourself. Nothing is impossible, but if it’s to be, it’s up to me.”

Painting

IS THE BEST THERAPY By Annette James

I developed this beautiful addiction to painting about 10 years ago, stylizing from realism to abstract, bringing vibrant colour and design into the home, taking up the big wall in the lounge or perhaps a frog in the toilet or office. Artworks can compliment a particular decor. My favourite is bringing indoors our tropical flowers and painting them into a contemporary style with black leaves and silver veins. Some of my works showcase the Far North’s unique nature and wildlife to the locals and to our visitors. Some works are printed into gifts or souvenirs -the Birds, Frogs and Koalas are very popular. Have you ever dabbled in art yourself ? Painting has many therapeutic benefits that put you in touch with your inner soul and creativity. I hold 2 day crash course for beginners, suitable for the absolute terrified. The course includes what materials to buy and where to buy them. Plus practical lessons on planning, perspective, drawing, painting and glazing with light and dark to give the 3 D appearance. The Heliconia is the subject which best exercises these basic principles of painting. Casual classes are also available Monday nights and or Friday mornings, they are fun and a great opportunity to make new friends. Classes are held at the Art Gallery Lazarus Street Bungalow, here my artworks are on display and visitors are always welcomed with a cuppa or cold drink. Jade Tait

From Music to Ink

Ink.ur.bod

Ink you can trust

By Josie Rose

With life-long aspirations of becoming a professional singer, embarking on a career in the tattoo industry was not something Jade Tait had planned- but that changed when she met her now-husband- tattoo artist- Terence Tait. Ink.ur.bod is Jade and Terence’s newest venture. As the studio’s promotions and marketing manager, Jade says that giving up her singing career was tough, but that she is thoroughly enjoying her new role. “Seeing my husband so happy and doing so well is very fulfilling. It’s often challenging to have to take a back seat, but this is what I chose and I’m happy”, smiles Jade. Prior to establishing Ink.ur.bod in April 2012, Jade and Terence were running a tattoo studio in Canada. “That was a huge learning curve involving much trial and error, but when we returned to Cairns I knew exactly what I needed to do in regards to establishing Ink.ur.bod.” While in Canada, Jade won several awards for her creative advertising and promotional ideas and has embraced her current role as mother, a wife and as the backbone of the business. “I run a social media page with over 10,000 followers worldwide so I’m constantly answering interesting questions, some of which are from people who do not understand about tattooing and often don’t agree with it, but that goes handin-hand with the industry.” Jade is currently working on several exciting projects and is busy preparing for the upcoming tattoo convention in America at which Terence has been invited to do a guest spot at Art Machine Productions. “Terence has over 8 years’ professional tattooing experience and is proudly sponsored by Eternal Ink, but he’s constantly being pursued by various sponsors due to his industry following.” Jade and Terence have recently introduced an innovative concept to Ink.ur.bod- a traditional barber service called Brass Knuckle Barbers. “It’s a very urban/ hip-hop blend, and it really works”, says Jade, who has since taken Brass Knuckle Barbers to another level. “Brass Knuckle Barbers offers traditional men’s haircuts and face-shaves, but our newest venture caters to the ladies.” Jade can’t hide her eagerness to announce the arrival of Ink. ur.bod’s newest venture- Brass Knuckle Bombshells. “It’s all about re-creating the popular pin-up girl, rockabilly glam look with vintage inspired hair-styles and classic make-up looks”, she beams excitedly. While Jade admits that being a young, working mother and a wife has its challenges, she says that prioritising is the key to ensuring she doesn’t become overwhelmed. “Always try to remember why you love what you do. Set goals and work towards them, but if you don’t reach them, don’t be too hard on yourself. With a positive mind-set, anything is possible.” Located at shop 2/ 51 Sheridan Street, Ink.ur.bod tattoo studio is renowned for its professional and talented team, customer service and impressive ink. Charmaine Matthews

Austart Homes

Austart HOMES By Kate van Eck

Built on over 42 years business experience, Austart Homes has earned an enviable reputation for delivering the highest standards of quality, value and service. Operating from a stunning new showroom in Smithfield, the company owned by Phill and Charmaine Matthews, is now one of seven franchises across the country. Charmaine was recently named HIA Business Partner of the Year (North Queensland) in 2012 and a finalist in the HIA National Awards in Brisbane this year. Originally from Sydney, Charmaine later moved to the Gold Coast where she took on a drafting cadetship with the business formerly known as Newstart Homes. While working for her husband-to-be, she studied part-time to complete a Diploma of Architectural Technology in Applied Science. “I’ve wanted to be a draftsperson since I was about 12,” she says. “Building has always been my passion.” Since relocating to Cairns 17 years ago when the company expanded, she’s become skilled in every aspect of the business. After the birth of their son in 2000, Charmaine’s decision to work behind the scenes was short lived. “After six weeks of drafting from home I needed to be around people,” she says. “I started working in a display home with my baby in a rocker – he came everywhere with me,” she laughs. In 2004, the couple decided to take a break from the business by setting up a franchise and rebranding the company Austart Homes. “To this day one of my most important roles is as a franchisor - guiding the other branches from Northern NSW through to Cairns,” she says. After making the recent decision to reclaim two local franchises, Charmaine and Phill are now personally responsible for an area stretching from Mission Beach to The Daintree. “We started from scratch with one display home in Smithfield Village and now have another at Canopy’s Edge, with a new one to open next door mid July,” Charmaine says. “We also opened a new showroom 12 months ago that incorporates our selection centre.” While having a display home is essential in demonstrating the company’s workmanship, Charmaine says the selection centre allows customers to choose from a much wider range of finishes. Efficiently run with a staff of only four, Austart Homes also has a longterm group of loyal subcontractors. “They’ve been with us for many years – some from the day we started,” Charmaine says. “We look after them and they look after us.” With three levels of building packages available (Fitzroy, Premier Plus and Sovereign) the company has also established a loyal customer base. “The majority of our customers are second or third home buyers – a lot of which are repeat clients,” she says. Despite being in a male dominated industry, Charmaine’s years of experience have earned her respect among her colleagues. “I started when I was 19 and I always knew it was going to be a challenge – but most people I deal with understand that the industry is changing.” On target to build thirty homes this financial year, she is determined for Austart Homes to be recognized as one of Cairns’ successful builders. “If you want something in life, set your goal and write it down – it’s important to go to work each day with a clear direction.”

Kristen Sharpe, Lea Martin and Wendy Manners Catholic Education

By Kate van Eck

Cairns Diocese Since opening their first Cairns school in 1890, Catholic Education has provided our region with affordable schooling in a caring, safe and respectful environment. From left to right: Lea Martin - St Michael’s School, Gordonvale, Kristen Sharpe - St Monica’s College, Cairns, Wendy Manners - Holy Cross School, Trinity

Now educating close to 10,250 students and employing over 1,750 people, the Cairns Diocese is now home to 26 schools – 14 of which are lead by a female principal. Amongst these leaders, Kristen Sharpe, Lea Martin and Wendy Manners, strongly believe in offering education that is not only academic but also spiritual, social, emotional and physical. As principal of Cairns’ oldest Catholic school, St Monica’s College, Kristen Sharpe says her interest in teaching developed during an adventurous upbringing in various air force bases from Melbourne to Malaysia. “My love of learning and my love of art initially drove me to be a secondary visual arts education teacher,” she says. Since being appointed principal at St Monica’s, she’s spent the last three years empowering students to be smart, strong and caring leaders. “St Monica’s has beautiful girls and dedicated teachers – our reputation is one for academic excellence, sporting prowess and our girls are women of integrity,” she says. “The college has always provided an excellent education for girls and now her

facilities symbolise her coming of age.” Originally from Caboolture, Lea Martin later moved to Cairns where she took on positions at a number of schools in the Diocese. After being appointed Acting Principal of St Michael’s, Gordonvale in 2009 and Principal the following year, she’s had the opportunity to help the school grow from a single-stream to a two-stream school. “I am a person who likes to help others, and I particularly enjoy working with children,” she says. “At St Michael’s, we have a very strong focus on social-emotional learning, teaching students the foundations of organisation, confidence, persistence, getting along and resilience. Research tells us that children who have these foundations will not only achieve better results academically but they will be more successful throughout their lives.” After four years as principal of Holy Cross School at Trinity Park, Wendy Manners is committed to creating an environment that fosters quality teaching and learning. Originally from Toowoomba, she has taught across all primary school grades as a teacher

in Queensland, NSW, Canada, the UK and the USA. “I grew up in a Catholic family and went to Catholic schools which I’ve always felt build community and provide a basis for living a good and meaningful life,” she says. “We promote our school as one that offers high quality educational and extra-curricular opportunities for all students within a Catholic context. We encourage in all students a love of one another, opportunities for active service towards our neighbour and a respect for our environment.” Although from varied backgrounds, Kristen, Lea and Wendy are three ambitious, highly educated women who’ve made it to the top of their profession. And while being female can still present challenges in many industries, Lea points out that it can be of benefit in a teaching career. “Generally, as a principal, when you are working with parents, it is most likely to be mothers. As another woman, it may be easier to relate to their concerns and anxieties and to show them a level of understanding and support,” she says.”

The

Business

BOOTH By Kate van Eck

Combining the complementary skills of four professional women, The Business Booth is an innovative service soon to open in the region. As BEC Australia’s Best Business Mentor 2012, Kim Kelly has 16 years experience in Corporate Finance while Glenda Aitken boasts a 30-year background at one of our major banks. Completing the team is Kristy Krieg, a Certified Practicing Marketer with over 15 years multinational experience, and Amanda Hinrichsen with over 16 years experience in executive administration. With their friendly, informal approach, they plan to offer low cost, strategic advice to businesses both in Cairns and across the country. The Business Booth promises an experience far removed from the stuffy, boardroom-style approach we’ve become accustomed to. “We’re planning to emulate a Qantas Club feel with an inviting, open-plan layout and a variety of seating options,” Kim says. “We really want to break that traditional mould and offer a fun and creative alternative.” Getting down to basics with one page business plans and marketing strategies, The Business Booth is about empowering people to make better choices. “We know from our experience that it’s the simple things that make all the difference.” Due to open in the coming weeks, their new office on Mulgrave Road will cater to all businesses in the region. “We also plan to drive a lot of our business online as we really see this as a national proposition,” Kim says. Offering a free initial consultation, The Business Booth offers a complete consultation package starting with a simple a profit and loss. “We look at the finance, the marketing, the business and the people – including what you need to sustain your personal lifestyle,” she says. “I really believe that once you know the 55

numbers, you can derive the strategy.” All from corporate backgrounds, the team can assist clients with all facets of their business. Kim handles the financial analysis, Kristy provides marketing advice and Glenda offers further financial assistance – with Amanda in charge of administration. “Coming from a marketing background, it’s nice to have the security of knowing that when I plan a strategy it’s based on real figures rather than assumptions,” Kristy says. Glenda also points out that many businesses only put together a plan when required by the bank. “So many of our clients are glad they did the workshop as they now have a much clearer direction.” Offering practical but innovative advice, The Business Booth understands the dynamic nature of business, focussing on what people can do tomorrow rather than down the track. “People generally have a preconceived idea of what we’re about and are usually shocked to find we’re very different to what’s out there,” Amanda says. With all the women at various stages of family life, they’ve embraced a modern approach to business. “The fact that someone can’t work the traditional 8 – 5 doesn’t mean you can’t tap into their skills,” says Kim. “Many employers are missing out because they don’t understand that flexibility.” In order to give potential clients an insight into their business, they’ve documented their own journey through Facebook videos diaries. “We face the same challenges as our clients,” she says. “But we embrace change and understand that there’s many ways of successfully doing business.”

A little over 12 years ago, Darlene Stewart realised she no longer felt fulfilled by her hospitality career. Instead, she decided to peruse her passion for man’s best friend. Darlene had enjoyed many previous years of caring for sick animals and participating in dog shows. Realising her desire to re-visit her passion for dogs, Darlene underwent intensive training in Melbourne where she learnt the art of dog clipping and grooming. Now, as the owner of 4 dog grooming parlours and a Doggy Day Care, Darlene enjoys pampering, clipping and caring for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Poochies Parlour operates from 4 convenient locations at Earlville, Smithfield, Gordonvale and 134 Aumuller Street which is the largest of the parlours and also offers the Doggy Day Care service and boasts a doggy waterpark. “I’m really proud of the fact that I’m doing

something I love”, says Darlene, who is also proud of her staff. “Dogs are part of our families and our lives- they are like our children, so I feel blessed that people trust me and my staff.” As a mum of 2 young children, Darlene says that there certainly are challenges associated with being a mum and a business owner, but through organisation and planning ahead, she has managed to find a healthy balance. “I’m able to be a mum, follow my dreams and expand my business.” Darlene has even formulated her own dog shampoo, conditioner and cologne called Plush Paws, all of which are soap and chemical free. “Dogs need love, exercise and attention. We provide that in a safe, secure and professional environment.” Visit the Poochies Parlour website to book online 24 hours a day, or free call 1800 738 772. Your pooch will love you for it. 57

Celebrating 20 Years!

Ciao Italia Ristorante Pizzeria By Josie Rose

“Ciao Italia has built friendships and relationships over the last 20 years, and I think that’s just as important as dollars and cents.” -Tiberio Donnini Ciao Italia, formerly known as Donnini’s Ciao Italia, has been as institution in Cairns since it was established in 1993 by Tiberio Donnini and Greg Peters. Now approaching its 20th birthday, Greg and co-owners, Cassandra Kick and Geoff Hewson, couldn’t be more proud of Ciao Italia’s achievements and invite Cairns to celebrate with ‘Lunch in the Vineyard’ on July 12th 2013. “When we arrived in cairns back in 1993, there certainly wasn’t the variety of restaurants that exist here today”, says Tiberio, who has since retired from the hospitality industry. “Ciao Italia took off from the moment we opened the doors because what we were offering was new to the industry- we were priced right and provided great service.” Tiberio says that his philosophy was to provide a great service to the local community. “If we won over the locals, we knew that word-of-mouth would bring in the tourists.” Having established a popular

local restaurant with an unrivalled reputation and supreme waterfront location has seen Ciao Italia prosper and remain a popular venue, even though some of Cairns’ most challenging times. “Our restaurant survived even when the Pier complex suffered, and that’s due to providing an unsurpassed service and receiving unwavering local support.” Reaching their 20 year milestone is even more impressive when you consider the number of restaurants and venues in Cairns that have been forced out of business over the years. “As a team and a restaurant, I think we did a hell of a lot for the Cairns dining scene and Greg should take his hat off in the sense that there are not many people in Cairns who can claim to have remained in the hospitality industry for over 20 yearsCairns should be proud of Ciao Italia”, says Tiberio. Current owners, Greg, Cassandra and Geoff share Tiberio Donnini’s passion

and excitement in celebrating the great milestone. “Many of our customers have become very close friends over the last 20 years. We have watched their children grow up, many of whom have become our close friends too”, says Greg. “We’d like to thank all our friends and the community for their valued and ongoing support, and we invite you to celebrate Ciao Italia’s upcoming 20th Birthday.” So come-on Cairns- let’s join Greg and the team on the 12th of July at 11.30am to Celebrate Ciao Italia’s 20th Birthday with their ‘Lunch in the Vineyard’ which includes a four course traditional Italian lunch with wines by Taylors Estate and lucky door prize: Taylors Jaraman Limited Release Collectors Case. $120 per person, bookings essential. RSVP by July 8th and be a part of a celebration that’s as much a tribute to Cairns and the local community as it is to Ciao Italia itself.

Wine

of the month

TAYLORS’ Shiraz Cracka Review Many may call this the Shiraz of the region, as this magnificent wine has been revered for quite a long time. There is nothing this wine doesn’t taste brilliant with although it can be greatly paired with assorted red meats and Classic cheeses. This wine lets of the most beautiful sent into the aroma, the passionate smell of plum and black fruit touch the area with a slight touch of olive as well as oak. 201307_family_day_mag_ad.pdf

Winemaker’s Note Appearance: At release the wine is a dark red colour with ruby red hues. Nose: The wine has a seductive, lifted aroma characterized by plum, blackcurrant and dark cherry fruits along with subtle chocolate and a touch of oak derived spice. Palate: The palate is rich, luscious and round with intense, perfectly ripened fruit characters. Mocha coffee and subtle spice characters complement generous fruit flavours of plum and blackberry. The wine is medium to full-bodied with soft mid-palate and supple tannins. It has a well-balanced structure with great texture, good length and lashings of fruit on the finish. Cellaring: The wine can be enjoyed upon release but will reward careful cellaring up to and possibly beyond 2020. A soft and fleshy shiraz boasting a lively palate of juicy red berry fruits, plum and spice, along with subtle chocolate and savoury characters from the oak maturation.

& Schaupp

Noonan

Karin

Sometimes chance meetings have unexpectedly lovely consequences. This turned out to be very much the case a couple of years back when renowned Queensland singer Katie Noonan happened to meet classical guitarist Karin Schaupp at a festival of chamber music at Huntington Estate in New South Wales. The pair got talking and decided, tentatively, to work together, when time permitted. The first result was a modest EP, Songs From The British Isles. This was followed last year by a quite extraordinary full-length album, Songs Of The Southern Skies. Katie and Karin have reunited again after a break of several months and are heading to Cairns to perform songs from the album at Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 6 July. “Festivals are a great way to cross-fertilise,” says Karin. “I think solo artists, like myself, can have quite a lonely life and festivals allow you to collaborate with other artists. It’s been wonderful developing this magical, unpredictable association with Katie.” Songs Of The Southern Skies finds the guitarist and the singer combining to produce remarkable, stripped back versions of a dozen or so songs made famous by Australian and New Zealand artists, including Nick Cave, Gotye, the Finn Brothers, Bic Runga, Gurrumul and Vince Jones. The arrangements and the quality of performance succeed because they reveal to the listener new aspects to each of the pieces – even though the originals may be very familiar. “I never see the point of doing someone else’s work unless you’re going to shine a different light on it in some way,” says Katie. “If you’re going to do it, it needs to be quite different. With Nick Cave’s Into Your Arms, for instance, the words are so beautiful. Beneath the grit and swagger of the original there are these incredible sentiments, this wonderful language that allowed Karin and I to take it somewhere else.” Karin agrees. “We didn’t want to just do cover versions,” she says. “We wanted to do reinventions of each song. When we were first thinking about this album, we compiled a very long list of our favourite songs and then we started whittling it down. We had to work out whether each song could be adapted to a basis of solo voice and classical guitar. Could it be pared down in that way?” Of the songs that made it to the short list, only one didn’t make it onto the final album. “In the end, we decided to leave off Friday On My Mind,” explains Karin. “For a whole heap of reasons, it became the odd one out, although we do include it in the concerts. I have to admit, I didn’t realise it was an Australian song until Katie told me!” Just as Karin learned a bit about rock history from Katie, the singer also learned a thing or two from the guitarist. “I think every musician has something to teach you,” Katie says. “Karin has such a huge dynamic range with her instrument – I try to do the same with my instrument. I found it extraordinary, the sounds and dynamics we can create with just the two of us. Karin is such a sensitive and gentle player.” The performance of Songs Of the Southern Skies at Tanks will be one of the last the pair will do together for a while. Karin is planning a solo tour, and Katie has a packed schedule including a show for the Queensland Music Festival, a collaboration with Vince Jones and a celebration of English composer Benjamin Britten at the Sydney Opera House. Both women agree, however, that it will only bea matter of time before they find themselves once again together in a recording studio. “I’m sure we’ll do another album,” says Karin. “We had such a ball recording this one and we’ve become great friends in the process.” Katie Noonan & Karin Schaupp perform at Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 6 July. IYARA RESTAURANT REVIEW

by Sakare Thai Cuisine

Positioned upstairs at 91 The Esplanade, Iyara is in the heart of the city and all its attractions yet elevated enough to escape the hustle and bustle below. As head chef and owner of the restaurant, Sirinee Naiyachit (AKA Sakare) previously made a name for herself in Melbourne with the original Iyara on Toorak Road South Yarra. After featuring in The Age Good Food Guide, she took her recipe for success along with her main chef to explore a new opportunity in Cairns. We were served a selection of entrees including the restaurant’s signature dish, Mieng Kham. Wrapped in a betel leaf, this surprisingly powerful morsel combines

shrimp, coconut, ginger, peanuts, chilli and fresh lime to deliver an explosion of flavours unlike anything we’ve ever tried before. We also enjoyed the Iyara Curry Puff and the Tom Sum which is a refreshing salad combining green paw paw, grilled prawns, peanuts and cherry tomato dressed in a chilli-lime sauce. Lastly our entrée selection included Pla Hoy Shell, a spicy warm scallop complimented by the subtle favours of fresh herbs, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and mint. For our main course we enjoyed four distinct dishes served with individual pots of jasmine rice. The Gaeng Keaw Wann

LUNCH Wed - Fri

Gai Yang, a green curry chicken with beans, chilli and kaffir lime leaf is a great option for those new to Thai food who are looking for a more predictable option. Ped Pad Krachai, a stir-fried duck with dry red curry, wild ginger, baby corn and beans was a stand out dish due to the unique addition of crunchy fried Thai basil. While my companion raved about the Kha Moo Tod, a caramelised crispy pork hock infused with a chilli vinegar dressing, my personal favourite was Gaeng Massaman neur, a rich massaman curry of chuck beef, potato, peanut and shallots which was literally a melt-in-the-mouth experience.

Cheryl Williams Smarter Mortgage Solutions

A Blessing

in Disguise By Josie Rose

“Being made redundant was the best thing that could have happened to me.” For most people, redundancy means disaster, but for Cheryl Williams, it was a moment of great significance that she now views as a blessing. When Citibank closed in 1997 Cheryl found herself as a single mother at a crossroads. With 16 years of experience in the mortgage and lending industry, Cheryl says that starting her own company felt like a natural progression. “I was determined and unshakable once I had made the decision to establish my own business.” Cheryl’s company, Smarter Mortgage Solutions, was the second business of its kind in the Cairns finance industry, and Cheryl says that, back then, she was also the only female Mortgage Broker in Far North Queensland. Over her 16 years as a business owner, Cheryl has continued to gain the respect of her family, clients and the community. “It wouldn’t have been easy as a single mother- I’m very proud of her”, says her son, Rhys. Smarter Mortgage Solutions is a long-established family business comprising of Cheryl, her son, Rhys, and her sister, Robyn, all of whom have Diplomas in Financial Services (Mortgage Brokering). Wanting to protect her clients and to offer financial security and independence, in 2010 Cheryl obtained a Diploma of Financial Planning. “We are not only a brokering business. We don’t allow our clients to get into debt without ensuring that they are also protected should their income stop. We give our clients financial security, not just a mortgage. For us, it’s a journey that begins with protecting our clients, and the journey doesn’t end until we have built an impenetrable wall around their financial life.” Cheryl is a member of the Cairns Mulgrave Rotary Club and is involved in charity fundraising including the Rotary Duck Race which is now celebrating its 10th year. Cheryl also sponsors 5 World Vision and 2 Destiny Rescue children. “I would like to be more hands-on and to further assist these children who are regularly sold into sex slavery. It’s on my bucket list”, she says. So what are the benefits of visiting Smarter Mortgage Solutions? Apart from being a locally-owned and renowned family business, Cheryl and her team have access to 35 of Australia’s most trusted lenders and can save you time and money. Imagine the time it would take you to research 35 lenders yourself…. Coupled with her financial planning arm- Wealth today, and driven by her dedication to provide a comprehensive service, Cheryl has no plans of slowing down any time soon. “I could look at retiring, but I love what I do, besides, I don’t knit or bake, so what would I do”, she laughs. 71

A blossoming

I Do Flowers

PASSION By Josie Rose

Kerry Woodgate is an undeniably talented florist, so to learn that floristry hadn’t been her initial desire, is somewhat of a surprise. “Both of my parents were extremely talented and creative. I grew up in Innisfail where my mother was a wedding designer and a florist, so understandably, she wanted me to peruse her passion, but to be honest, at such a young age, I just wasn’t interested in it- I wanted to be a hairdresser and make-up artist”, she admits. It wasn’t until Kerry ventured out of Innisfail and began attending national Interflora conferences that her passion for floristry blossomed. “I began to see the artistic side of floristry”, she remembers. As a naturally gifted visual artist, Kerry combines her two passions and creates industry recognised arrangements for weddings, special occasions and corporate functions from her popular Interflora florist- I Do Flowers. “Because I am also an artist, I have a flair for colour and texture”, she says. Admiring the stunning display of floral arrangements in I Do Flowers, one can liken Kerry’s floristry skills to creating living works of art. “I love fresh flowers because they are alive- they’re real. Some people don’t understand the point of giving and receiving flowers because they are eventually going to die, but we must enjoy them while they’re alive- just as we must enjoy our life while we are living it”, she says thoughtfully. Kerry has extensive experience in all areas of the wedding industry, including bridal gown design for which she has won 72

several awards. “I understand that everyone’s vision is unique when it comes to flowers, especially for weddings. Styling is my passion and I am thrilled to have a creative outlet and feel privileged to help create lasting memories for my clients”, Kerry smiles. “I’m able to reflect their personality through flowers. Each wedding and every person is different and is treated as such. Just as no two flowers are identical, no two people are the same.” Kerry has recently expanded I Do Flowers and she now showcases an exquisite range of striking table centrepieces, chair covers, backdrops, giftware and hire items specialising in the creation of timeless, elegant and breathtaking weddings, events and special occasions. Another new and innovative addition to the enchanting shop is the Lolly Buffet comprising of a decadent display of colour-coordinated tempting treats fit for weddings, gifts and corporate functions. Despite her childhood doubts about floristry, Kerry says she is proud to have pursued her mother’s passion and to possess the skills and creativity to have established a rewarding and blossoming career. “I DO what I love. I Love what I DO.” Kerry and the team at I Do Flowers have a huge array of beautiful and innovative ideas to help make your next occasion extra special. I was lucky enough to be invited by the wonderful Australian pianist Piers Lane, whom I met in London a few years ago. What are you most looking forward to about your visit to Cairns? Since this is my first trip to Australia I cannot even express how excited I am! My friends who have been to Australia tell me I won’t want to come back. I am so excited about everything - starting from the beauty of the nature, to making music with great musicians and seeing some of my friends at the Festival. Where and when will you be performing in Cairns? I will be performing on the 4th of August at the Cairns Civic Theatre at 6pm alongside great musicians such as Nicholas Daniel, Piers Lane, Zuill Bailey and Gil Morgenstern. We are also performing at Concert Conversations at Whitfield House the next morning. Who is the most famous person you have performed alongside or for? I had a fantastic time on stage with Bryn Terfel playing Police’s Roxanne last year! What advice do you give to aspiring young musicians? The advice is simple - work hard, be interested in what is happening around you and have balance in everything- both work and leisure.

Hadley’s Law By Kate van Eck

Despite being a self-confessed ‘late-blossomer’, Suzanne Hadley has accumulated a wealth of experience in the legal profession. Now as principal of Hadley Family Law, which opened its doors just a few weeks ago, she provides a thorough, cost-effective service in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Focusing exclusively on family law, Suzanne believes every relationship breakdown has the potential to be resolved with dignity. A long-term resident since 1972, Suzanne raised her four children in Cairns after separating from her first husband. “When the youngest was in her second last year of high school I went back to school myself,” she says. “I was working for a solicitor at the time who then encouraged me to pursue a legal career. I ended up being admitted to university at the same time as my second daughter.” After marrying for the second time, Suzanne became admitted in 1993 and has been practising law ever since. As an Accredited Family Law Specialist since 1998, she is committed to achieving the best outcome for her clients while continually furthering her expertise. After a long history with Farrellys Lawyers, including 15 years as a partner, Suzanne made the decision to go out on her own this year. “The firm restructured in April and I decided it was time to do things my way,” she laughs. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but my vision was to concentrate on family law.” Servicing clients locally, interstate and internationally, Suzanne’s long-term goal is to establish a practice that incorporates complementary services. “There’s a whole raft of issues involved,” she says. “Clients generally need to see a number of interconnected professionals. It would be great to offer clients a completely integrated service, rather than have them visit a number of service providers, Suzanne says that while there are no real winners or losers in family law, her job is to help each client emerge a stronger person. “Their entire life is being put on my desk,” she says. “Apart from considering the practical issues in a division of property, such as financial and non-financial contributions, there’s also a lot of emotional issues involved.” She says family lawyers have to work in a collaborative way either by negotiation or mediation – with litigation being the last resort. “When a person’s whole world’s just fallen apart you need to find a way to get them through as unscathed as possible,” she says. “I try to offer a service that’s tailored towards their individual needs.” Throughout her extensive career, Suzanne has supported both women and ‘late-blossomers’. “When I became a partner I was one of about four female partners in Cairns so it’s pleasing to see that’s changed over the years,” she says. “A lot of women came to law later after having other careers and raising families, and I championed more flexible working arrangements to help promote women in the legal profession.” Surrounded by her long-term personal assistant and an accounts woman who’s also worked with her for many years, Suzanne is enthusiastic about having the opportunity to empower others.” As a woman, a mother and an MS advocate I’m passionate about equality,” she says. “Even though my family is grown, the demands of family life aren’t lost on me.” 75

Megan O’Neill Cairns Quality Accounting

In Her Father’s

Footsteps By Josie Rose

Megan O’Neill had initially resisted following in her father’s footsteps toward a career as an accountant. Having been born with a gift for understanding numbers and realising she wasn’t enjoying teaching, Megan soon found herself immersed in accounting, and, despite her previous hesitations, she was loving it. “I didn’t mind accountancy initially, but I never thought of it as a career”, admits Megan. “When I graduated as a teacher I was posted to Cairns. I loved Cairns but I hated teaching.” 20 years on, and Megan can’t imagine a career she could possible enjoy more than accounting, although in 2008, she realised her desire to do things her own way. “I had been working for a firm in Alice Springs but it wasn’t until I returned to Cairns that I began to feel unsettled. I knew I could provide a more personal service if I were to run my own firm.” Megan now owns Cairns Quality Accounting- a boutique firm focused on providing a friendly and personalised service. “We cater for the smaller entities which often get lost within big firms, and our overheads are

lower so we’re able to offer a value-for-money service.” Megan employs a small team of likeminded professionals, including her father who has 40 years accounting experience. “When I worked for Dad, I had to do things his way, but now he has to do things my way”, she laughs. Megan says her career highlight has undoubtedly been establishing her own business. “I’m now the driver of my own bus, so to speak- and I love it”, she grins. “We’re a small, very friendly and approachable firm specialising in tax returns, financial statements and audits for not-for-profit entities. I enjoy the close relationships I develop with my clients and I’m proud to have followed in my father’s footsteps.” With the End of Financial Year upon us, take the stress out of tax time and call the friendly team at Cairns Quality Accounting on 4031 80 46.

Queensland TAFE

From its seven locations in the region, Tropical North Queensland TAFE provides an extensive range of educational programs to over 13,000 students each year.

From left to right: Jenny Waters, Robyn Corner, Bernice Wallace, Karen Mosley, Ailsa Tobiano

With state-of-the-art facilities and professional staff, the institute is recognized as the premier provider of industry relevant training in North Queensland. As business teachers at the Cairns Campus on Gatton Street, Jenny Waters, Robyn Corner, Ailisa Tobiano, Karen Mosely and Bernice Wallace are committed to providing practical, ‘job-ready’ training to their students. With the benefit of their own extensive experience, all five women have a unique insight into both the industry and the training process. “After many years in business I got to that stage in my life where I wanted a career change,” says Robyn. “I went to TAFE to find out what was required to become a teacher and eventually joined the staff full time, where I’ve now been for over 20 years.” Despite their business backgrounds, Jenny says they each had to complete a Certificate IV and a Diploma of Business in order to teach in their particular areas. “We’ve all got our formal qualifications but we still need to keep updating our skills – it’s a constant study path,” she says. Currently providing courses in Certificate II, Certificate III in Business and Business Administration, Certificate IV in Business, Diploma of Business and Traineeships, all training is designed to increase the employability of students. By developing skills in communication, computers, supervisory, finance and management, graduates can either enter the workplace or use it as a stepping stone to further tertiary study. The teachers also point out that many of their courses allow the opportunity for a dual qualification simply by undertaking some additional modules. “A lot of business 77

people recognise the quality of the training we provide,” says Jenny. “Often we get calls from people in the industry asking us to recommend students for placement.” Offered by blended delivery, students can choose to study through day and evening classes, online or via workshops, with the benefit of self-paced learning. “The biggest difference between face-to-face and online learning is the connection with other people,” says Robyn. “But because we’re locally based, even our online students have access to real teachers through telephone and email.” Jenny says that many students also find the adult learning environment beneficial. “As well as getting their formal skills and qualifications they gain a confidence that they may not have had at school.” And with the advantage of Recognised Prior Learning, many older students are surprised how quickly they can gain their qualification. “A lot of people underestimate their experience and quickly become enthusiastic when we review their options,” says Ailisa. In order to provide the best and most relevant training available, the teachers are constantly updating their own skills. “We spend one week a year out in the industry while also keeping abreast of any changes through journals and guest speakers,” Robyn says. And while there’s currently a higher level of female students in the lower level courses, the teachers say they are aiming for a gender-neutral scenario that also includes encouraging male students to enter traditionally female occupations. “We always try to understand the work/ life balance of our students,” says Bernice. “It’s all about making a difference in someone’s life.”

Change By Josie Rose

When Deb Johnstone’s sons became adults, she found herself unsure of her next step and thinking, “What now?” Not only has Deb grown in confidence, in understanding herself and in creating the life she wants through her exciting new career; she’s helping others to do the same. “Having been a single working mother for many years, when my children became adults, I found myself facing a crossroads and wondering, where do I go from here?” With extensive management experience across various industries, Deb decided she wanted to start her own business - but she was still at a loss as to what she actually wanted to pursue. “During my time in management, my co-workers would come to me for advice and to talk about their issues, and I realised I had a gift with people.” One day, out of the blue, the words ‘Life Coach’ entered Deb’s head. “I’m not sure where it came from, but a couple of months later I had started researching the role of a Life Coach.” 18 months on and Deb has attained her qualifications as a Personal Success Coach through The Coaching Institute in Melbourne, and specialises in NLP- Neuro Linguistic Programming- a study of our language, patterns, strategies and beliefs. Deb’s role as a Personal Success Coach is about helping people create change in any area of their professional or personal life and helping them empower themselves with confidence and self belief by altering negative thinking, unresourceful language, patterns and beliefs, which will give them the results that they want in their life. “In NLP we work with people to develop the strategies they need to create what they want” When people begin to change internally, they create a different energy and behave differently. When our behaviour changes, people begin to respond differently to us, and when we take different actions, our results will change profoundly.” Through her in-depth studies, ongoing research and applying what she learnt, Deb noticed a positive change in herself and says that her career highlights are sharing breakthrough moments with her clients. “It is an honour and extremely fulfilling to share their journey, to help them see what it is that they want, break through their obstacles and move forward to achieve it.” Deb conducts one-on-one sessions from the Bolands Centre in Cairns and presents Vital Woman workshops with Author and Wellness Consultant, Jo Ettles. Together, they plan to travel throughout Far North Queensland with their life changing workshops. Deb will be running Webinars from the 23rd of July for up to 15 people per class online for those who are curious about Personal Development and would like to learn how to move forward, but are not yet ready to commit to one-on-one sessions. CAPE York

Cape York Institute

Institute By Kate van Eck

Raised in a small Cape York community with limited opportunities and a range of social problems, Fiona Jose was motivated to become part of the solution. Now as CEO of The Cape York Institute, this inspiring woman of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, knows better than most what challenges Indigenous Australians still face to this day. With the support of a close-knit family that instilled a strong work ethic in her at an early age, she has overcome numerous obstacles to become part of the next generation of indigenous leaders. Despite the challenges of her upbringing, Fiona says she always considered herself to be privileged. “I was often gutted by the tragedy of community members who passed too young, too often,” she says. “But, even as a child, I could see that my family was different to many others around me.” Watching her father go to work every day to provide for the family, while her mother escorted the children to school, Fiona says there were “no excuses” when it came to education. “It wasn’t until I attended high school that I realised my upbringing in terms of education, housing and income – had been at the lowest end compared to mainstream society. This galvanised me to want to understand and change the situation.” Fiona’s career with the Cape York Institute started in 2008 when she was identified as having potential talent as a Leader. “The Leaders Program empowered me though education, training and access to mentors like Noel Pearson,” she says. “This was instrumental in my development and growth both personally and professionally.” After joining The Cape York Institute as Director of Leadership in 2011 she quickly moved to the role of CEO in 2012. “Anyone who occupies this position does so because of a passionate commitment to enhancing the lives of aboriginal people and their communities – and I am no different,” she says. As an independent policy and leadership organisation, The Cape York Institute champions reform in indigenous economic and social policy, and supports the development of current and future Cape York Leaders. Stemming from Noel Pearson’s vision, The Institute’s four focus areas are: Cape York Welfare Reform, Policy and Research, Leadership, and Evaluation. “It’s about ensuring that Cape York people have the capabilities to choose a life that they have reason to value,” Fiona says. “And although we focus on issues in Cape York, we also aim to have a national influence.” As an Indigenous woman in business, Fiona has no problem standing her ground. “I get on with the job. Being female isn’t the way I approach my work, and it’s not the way my colleagues view me,” she says. Inspired by the life of Rosa Parks, she knows what it feels like to be discriminated against and feels a responsibility to speak up. One of her greatest passions is to push for equality in our Constitution - which still doesn’t recognise that Indigenous people existed on this land before the British arrived. “I think of Rosa Parks, and I know we will get there and that I need to do my bit to speak up for change.” 79

Holistic healthcare

for a happier, healthier you

It is said that from small things, big things grow – and few businesses have grown from more humble beginnings than O’Brien Healthcare. by Michelle Dryburgh

The business began as a mobile diabetes education service in 2007, with founder and director Shireen O’Brien – the only full time private credentialled diabetes educator in Far North Queensland - driving up to 1000km a week to introduce herself to every GP in the Cairns region and make home visits to her clients. Word of her patients’ dramatic health improvements soon spread, allowing Shireen to open a small office on Mulgrave Road. The growing practice moved to its current location on Sheridan Street in 2010 and now boasts a team of allied health professionals including an accredited practising dietician, exercise physiologist and wellbeing nurse. “I wanted to provide my clients with holistic, caring and personalised support to improve all aspects of their health and wellbeing,” she said. “I have an amazing team of professional women and we all share the same values and vision, to treat our clients as we’d like to be treated and go that extra mile, whether it be sending a card, mailing out additional information or just making a friendly call to say hello.” Shireen’s own professional profile also continues to grow from strength to strength, this year being invited to speak at the 4th World Diabetes Congress in Chicago, USA. It’s an achievement she credits to her Christian faith and the support of her husband Steve, her parents and other industry professionals including John Cantamessa, Stephen Godchild, Darrin Halpin, Dr Nita Ling, Dr Ashim Sinha and Dr Jenny Yarker. 81

“I was blessed with a passion to stay focused with this new concept of diabetes care,” she said. “I had minimal support in the beginning, and there was a time when I was making just $50 a month, but my husband’s support was amazing, and without him writing the business plan there would be no business.” Clients travel from as far as Darwin and Papua New Guinea to access the services of O’Brien Healthcare. The range of services on offer has grown to include comprehensive chronic disease management and prevention, weight management, nutritional advice, exercise plans and mental health services. Shireen says one of the most exciting programs available through O’Brien Healthcare is the 12 Week Body Blitz. The next program will commence on August 5 and provides participants with a supportive and structured weight loss and fitness plan. Each participant receives an initial consultation with the O’Brien Healthcare dietician and exercise physiologist, customised meal and exercise plan, two boot-camp sessions each week, ongoing support from the entire O’Brien Healthcare team including the wellbeing nurse, weekly weigh ins and a motivational group session at the mid-way point. Shireen said the 12 Week Body Blitz went far beyond other weight loss programs to help participants on the road to lifelong change. “We are there for our clients every step of the way,” she said. “I honestly love my job, and feel so blessed to have a role which impacts on so many lives.”

Becoming an Australian Citizen is the final stage of an individual’s migration journey here in Australia. Australian Citizenship brings with it privileges and responsibilities.

Australian Citizenship and the process of applying depends on your eligibility whether it is Citizenship by conferral, by descent, by adoption or by resuming citizenship. JMc Architects

Tropical I Urban I Desirable

By Josie Rose

As a mother of 3 and an in-demand architect, Julianne Field (McAlloon) has her share of challenges, but remaining focused, listening to her intuition and being organised has seen her become a renowned name in the industry. Julianne is the director and owner of JMc Architects- a creative studio boasting a broad portfolio of clients and projects. In 1993, Julianne graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Architecture (Hon) and went on to work in a large firm in Brisbane. With a passion for the Cairns lifestyle and tropical architecture, Julianne returned to Cairns, registered, and due to a high demand for Julianne’s designs, JMc Architects was established in 2005. Based at 34 Magazine Street, Stratford, Julianne operates her company alongside her husband’s construction company. The husband and wife team offer clients the option of an architect and build service: ‘Field Homes- tropical Innovative designs’. JMc Architects have the qualifications and experience to manage the entire process of architectural design and construction. “We utilise the latest version of BMI (building information modelling) with REVIT and AutoCAD systems for the design and construction process. This allows us to generate three dimensional rendered models at concept design stage.” JMc Architects is able to assist with forming the client brief, site analysis, interior design, town planning applications, site planning and urban design, concept design, design development, construction documents, tender evaluation, contract administrative services, defects liability and post occupancy evaluation services. We are a dynamic and progressive practice focused on client satisfaction.” Julianne says that her biggest challenges are, “The idealism of being everything to everyone, finding guilt-free me time with small children and getting my husband to do the dishes” she laughs. Business-wise, Julianne is always careful to choose projects she is passionate about and strives to educate clients of the ‘real value’ of engaging an architect through the entire process of a project from concept to completion. As a Cairns local and a talented architect, Julianne Field has the experience, knowledge and passion to design architecture to reflect, embrace and respect the tropical climate and environment. “I love a challenge. “On the Go” in India Namaste! An Indian word largely used as a “Hi” or “Bye” but a more literal translation can be “I see the light in you”. Well, I have seen the light that is the magic of India which has now soared to the top of my favourite destination list thanks to “On the Go Tours” . “On the Go Tours” have been operating since 1998 and are, themselves, now a leading light in the world of travel and tourism. They offer many different touring “styles” and, as well as India, will take you to several other fascinating destinations across the globe. My India trip was a “Tailor Made” holiday. “Tailor Made” means you share your idea’s of where you’d like to go, for how long and your preferred standard of accommodation with the “on the Go” team of experts who then design your dream holiday for you. My tour took me to four fascinating Cities in 10 days. The travel arrangements were seamless and extremely comfortable and the whole trip flowed easily and with no hassle whatsoever. This was thanks, largely, to the expertise of Satendra, our “On the Go” local guide , who was a mine of information and genuinely committed to making our holiday the very best it could be. As well as streamlining the travel and presenting the cultural aspects of the tour he knew just where to stop for meals to best avoid the dreaded ‘Delhi Belly ‘ and have a ‘tasty eating’ rather than a ‘hasty retreating’ experience of the local cuisine! He also knew where all the best shopping spots were to be found for those bargain buys we all love to bring back from our holidays. Top this off with staying in fantastic 4* and 5* “Taj” Hotels and Palaces ,renowned for

their style and comfort, excellent facilities and high service standards, and you have a holiday of a lifetime! It was in the surprisingly green capital of Delhi that we first encountered the Indian peoples ‘quirk’ of wanting their photo taken with western tourists. It slows you down a little but is a simple and fun way to interact with the locals and seems churlish to refuse since so many of us like to take our own snaps of them in their vibrantly coloured Sari’s and Dhoti’s. Invariably they ask where you’re from and their response to the answer “Australia” is either “from Sydney”? or “ we love Ricky Ponting”! After posing for several “family” photos, I found that running with a ‘Yes’ to Sydney was the simplest response since Cairns, for the most part, isn’t on their radar. As for the Cricket fans, a vote for Tendulkar goes a long way towards great Indian-Australian relations and you part ways with happy smiles all round. After Delhi came Agra and the inimitable Taj Mahal, a structure so splendid and awe inspiring it quite takes your breath away! In it’s sublimely shimmering symmetry, this majestic marble mausoleum is well worth the visit and deserves a place high on any travellers “must see “ list of world wonders. Next Jaipur, where we visited the spectacular City Palace. Noted for its exquisite peacock gates, this vast and stunning complex of buildings, courtyards and gardens still houses the Indian royal family today. Then a short drive and we

84

CairnsLife

switched to a very different mode of transport as, seated atop padded saddles, we were carried by colourfully decorated elephants up to the Amber Fort. This superb structure, comprised of several palaces, halls and temples with elaborate mirror mosaic work on it’s walls and ceilings, is set high on top of a hill overlooking the Maota Lake and is simply spectacular ! In Udaipur we stayed in the magical Lake Palace Hotel situated in the middle of Lake Pichola as if floating on surface of the water. A flag ship property of the Taj group, this former actual Palace features in several scenes of the Bond movie “Octopussy” chosen because it is just so magnificent and unique. A stay at the Lake Palace is one of India’s truly sublime experiences and I really can, and do, recommend it. Udaipur has plenty on offer but the City Palace, high on the hill overlooking the Lake, is particularly worthy of note. It is a single facade formed from many different palaces which are decorated with inlaid glass mosaic’s, intricate stone carvings and charming blue and white ceramic’s. This grandeur along with it’s museums and art collections, make it a charming and fascinating experience! Finally back to Delhi for a “last stop” spot of shopping before having to say a sad farewell to my new favourite country. Want to see it for yourself ? For your own awesome experience of “Incredible India” I assure you that a really excellent way to go is with “On the Go” ! Happy Travels and Namaste!

Liv

Rider

of the month

COLE

Hi Liv! Tell us a little about yourself: Exactly 2 years ago I weighed in at 136kg, had major health concerns and suffered with depression. And cycling/triathlon brought happiness back into my life. Now having lost 50kg I feel more alive than ever and have done things I thought I’d never be able to do. What kind of riding do you do? I am into triathlon which is obviously more than just cycling. However, cycling is a big part of my life as I ride to and from work. What began your passion for riding? My passion started when I completed my first triathlon, I was still carrying a little extra weight at 126kg but it didn’t take long for me to realize that the ride part was pretty amazing. I had then proceeded to purchase a road bike and I remember the days where I thought 20km was a challenge (this makes me very great full to how far I have come) Are you involved in a club in Cairns? I am currently apart of Triathlon Australia, Cairns Crocs Tri Club and Fitness Australia. What are some competitions you have participated in and where did you place? I have competed in local Triathlons and usually walk away with a placing (only because there only

3 people in my age group). Recently in competed in my first Cairns 70.3 Ironman, where I had a very painful experience, due to fighting of a sinus infection a month before hand I was landed with a migraine and an epic stitch. Not to be deterred I slogged on to finish the day was truly tuff but It hasn’t bruised my determination, as I am already thinking of the next race and how & I can improve. How do you prepare for a race? For a longer endurance event there is months of training involved. Leading up to race, nutrition is the key (for me) and especially on race day as you have already built up your fitness throughout the months of training. But most importantly, I feel it is important to maintain a sense of balance and my social life friends and family keeps me somewhat sane. Which helps me still stay focus for the task ahead. What do you find rewarding about the sport? The finishing line. There is nothing more rewarding than running across that finish line, it’s purely magical it doesn’t matter where you place in the race everyone who crosses that line is a winner. What advice do you give to beginners? As a Personal Trainer, studying Sports and Exercise Science I have expended my own knowledge/ experiences and there is endless advice to give.

I have quite a soft spot for beginners in cycling, triathlon or any sport really. There was a lot of information that wasn’t given to myself when I started, like butt cream for cycling, not wearing undies under your cycling nicks and other little things. So I am starting triathlon coaching purely for beginners to help with this information that tends to be forgotten about plus actual coaching in the 3 fields (Swimming, Cycling and Running) Where is your favourite place to ride in Cairns? I do love a ride out to the northern beaches and a coffee at the end. Is there anyone you’d like to thank? There is always people to thank. Starting with my dietician Mitch from Health Management – thank you for your ongoing support. My best friend Lia, she keeps me on track on when I go a little crazy. My amazing coach Kryssi from GETFIT Personal Training, from running like an elephant to a striking gazelle, pushing me thru the “ahh I’d rather do this” and also being there for support when I need. Last but not least is Pump N Pedals, from the day I walked into the shop I have felt I have been a part of the family. One of my Major sponsors ‘On Running shoes’, thanks to Bart for helping have the best shoes in town.

Women In Business

Josephine Matthews Josephine’s Swimwear

The

Perfect

fit

“Retail is an art. It’s not just about setting up shop, opening the doors and waiting for it all to happen.” Says Josephine Matthews as she explains her philosophy of business sitting in front of her swimwear and resort wear shop, Josephines, on a busy corner of Port Douglas’ main Macrossan Street. With thirty five years of retail experience Josephine has seen the good times, the boom times and now the more modest times but she knows every year will be different and the art is in having the right stock for the right times and knowing how to match the swimming costume to the customer. “When I first started out I made some expensive mistakes,” she freely admits, “but I was lucky enough to be able to go to the European swimwear fairs every year and meet the buyers from stores like Harrods. I learnt a lot.” Josephine now caters to a local and international clientele who appreciate the range she stocks and the kind of service she gives which have become the hallmark of her business. While her clientele and service may be international her swimwear and resort wear is almost all Australian made with brands such as Funky Trunks and Jets as well as her own label. “You need to fit swimwear,” she says, “ I want my clients to be comfortable so I always have a young staff member and a more mature one because swimwear is personal. You are exposing your body and you have to be comfortable doing that. Having the right swimwear for your body shape is vital. 91

I like to make my customers feel and look great no matter what their figure is.” After a career in teaching in Melbourne Josephine and her husband took on a pub in Benalla, north of Melbourne which they ran for three years. She says that when you have run a pub, starting at 5a.m and finally falling into bed at midnight every day you know you can do anything. Josephine opened her first shop in Noosa in 1980 and then five years later opened another shop at Sanctuary Cove with everyone from the Sultan of Brunei and his wives to film stars and the wives of prime ministers. In 2000 she added Port Douglas to her portfolio of shops and just two years ago opened a second store in Macrossan Street, St. Tropez, specializing in the active swimwear market for not only ladies but also mens and children. “I just love Port Douglas,” Josephine says, “it has everything. There is so much to do and that is why the international tourists come here. Noosa doesn’t have all that. ” So inevitably Josephine gravitated to her Port Douglas store letting the others go in preference for the Far North.

Barking MAD

Dogs love to bark, but have you ever wondered what they are really saying when they erupt into a verbal onslaught.

It is one of their most important tools in communication and can result in a chorus of canine tones emanating from one backyard to another. Excessive barking is also one of the most commonly reported complaints to local authorities and can result in serious disputes between owners and other people in their neighbourhood. They bark when they play, in defence of their territory, when they are bored and when they are craving for attention. Establish boundaries and limitations for this behaviour from the moment you bring them into your home. It is a good idea to communicate with your neighbours regularly to ensure your dog is not causing problems when left unattended. Identify the things that make them bark and introduce a series of routines and commands that control this behaviour. When dogs play and become stimulated

they communicate through a variety of different postures and sounds. These messages include things such as let’s play, give me your attention, don’t come to close or that is to rough. It is important to encourage this type of interaction but always be considerate of the times your dogs may be barking. Territorial barking is a natural behaviour and dogs should never be discouraged from defending their property. Correcting this behaviour when the barking is excessive or unnecessary means you must be consistent. Always restrict their access to high stimulus areas of the yard when you are not home to correct them. Boredom is another cause of unnecessary barking. Daily exercise and a stimulating routine ensures most dogs will be happy to rest quietly when left unattended. Separation anxiety is a behavioural problem that may result in

92

CairnsLife

nuisance barking. Dogs suffering from this condition are known to bark for long periods when left alone. What do you do if your dog is barking excessively? Physical, mental and emotional stimulation is crucial for all dogs and will generally mean they are less likely to develop a barking problem. There is not always a quick and easy solution as there may be a combination of reasons why the dog is barking. Consult a canine behaviourist who will be able to help you identify what causes the problem and then assist in implementing strategies to reduce the behaviour.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY i n you r n ew h om e d es i g n

With the rising cost of services, essential to daily living, in our homes it is more crucial than ever that we make the most of energy efficient features in the design and construction of our homes. Since May 2010 new homes in Queensland are required to have a 6 star energy rating and this can be achieved in a number of ways. With some intelligent choices and research we can combat some of these rising costs and reduce the home’s impact on our environment. Cairns Regional Council has a new website ‘Green Thumb – Sustainable Living for the Tropics’ with a great deal of general energy saving ideas Using the best ‘passive’ design for your block of land is still the most important factor. This doesn’t mean that it has to be an expensive exercise, just a practical and logical one!! A home that is designed for Sydney or Melbourne, or even Brisbane, is not necessarily going to be the best for our climate here in Far North Queensland. Issues such as; orientation of the home on the block of land; allowing cool breezes and good airflow through the home: positioning walls internally and externally to allow good cross flow ventilation; where the sun rises and sets in both summer and

I have found more often recently that many of the builders in our Far North Queensland environment are not considering the energy efficiency of the new homes they build.

winter; exposure to elements during extreme conditions; suitable materials for energy efficiency and many more factors will make a lot of difference to the comfortable living in your home. It’s not an easy exercise weighing up the initial costs of some inclusions against the future running costs. Our climate lets us live an outdoor lifestyle so having suitably cool and inviting external living areas should be of high importance. Air conditioning is something that we are becoming more accustomed to in the tropics, so if we design our homes efficiently then we can reduce the amount of time we need to run them. Roof and ceiling insulation, reflective colours, tinted glass, good shade, solar power, gas cooking and hot water, efficient lighting and power options; adequate shading of walls; a higher pitched roof and good sized overhangs are all elements of your design that will reduce those running costs. When building a new home, my advice is to maximise your value for money, so maybe spend a few extra dollars on some energy saving features in the initial design. The larger the home the more it will cost to run. With costs of power ever increasing that’s good start on future savings!

Do some research yourself so that when you are talking to your builder/designer you can determine whether or not they are experienced in these good design principles or simply selling you a house. Then you can sit back, relax and enjoy your new home knowing that you have taken advantage of all the options available to you.

Northern Property Valuers (NPV) offers a wide range of independent valuation services including mortgage, purchase and sales, taxation and family law. NPV is based in Cairns and Mareeba, we cover a large area of Far North Queensland from Tully in the South to Thursday Island in the North. The property valuers at NPV consist of myself, Trevor Gard as Director, business partner Max Dickenson and residential valuer Bruce Coates. Specialising in all property topics, valuations undertaken include residential, commercial, sub-divisions, retail, rural, hotels and motels. In addition to providing a diverse range of valuations, NPV also provides general property advice and property consultancy services. Each month we will be giving our insight into a property topic of interest for City Life. This month’s topic is on the Cairns CBD Residential and Investment Units. The Mortgagee in Possession sales in Cairns City for investment units are finally starting to decrease. However there have been a significant number of units sold by the banks in recent times within the Cairns CBD. So even though there are signs of forced sales decreasing the banks have released a number of properties that have gone or about to go under the hammer.

MAKE YOUR GARDEN

UNIQUELY YOU!

Too often we have inherited someone else’s garden through purchasing or leasing a home with a pre-existing garden or as an instant garden extra option, attached to the building contract. Now is the right season to stamp your garden yours! Driving around the suburbs we see tired, dated gardens screaming out for help. Palms have out grown their yards, trees are too big NWZ \PMQZ [XIKM [PZ]J[ LWV¼\ ÆW_MZ IVL TI_V[ PI^M JMMV TIQL QV squares. Balconies have no point of difference and courtyards are empty. Garden beds look hungry and in urgent need of organic help. Typically gardens need a full renewal every 8-10 years. Remember the native shrubs of the eighties, the palms of the nineties and this decade, trees and shrubs with vibrant colour. Fashions change, new trends and cultivars are released to tempt us and our needs change i.e. we move around, young families grow up, personal wealth changes and we all grow older. Be creative with your garden, if not sure how to start, jump on line and view the best garden ideas in the world. Of course this has to be adapted for our tropical climate but the design concepts are the same. Soul search the purpose of your garden so that you know what it can give back to you. Is it privacy, peace, retreat,

98

prestige, entertainment, a wild life sanctuary, a wilderness, a secret garden for the grandchildren or whatever? If the whole garden concept is too daunting, start small on one dull area of your garden making the task more manageable. Your local nursery is invaluable in advising you on the best selection of plants and landscaping materials. They also have display ideas to inspire you. Some nurseries offer on-site consultations for that added help. Themed gardens create a focus for choosing plants and garden décor.
