Roll on Summer! F R O N T

Welcome to summer and say hello to the new sleek CairnsLife magazine! In the publishing world's equivalent of getting a bikini-ready summer body, we've had a transfor mation we know you'll love. The decision to change our size has been a long debated process - "Will we, won't we? Do we, don't we?"- but we've finally done it, and don't we look great? Part of the reason for our new look was to allow greater flexibility for the magazine; allowing us to be equally at home perched elegantly on the coffee table, slipped into handbags, or rolled up and tucked under ar ms for busy people on the run. We're delighted with our new for mat and we're sure you will be too. If a problem shared is a problem halved and two heads are better than one, then this month's featured business people have got it made. In this issue we shine the spotlight on the "power of the pair" in our Dynamic Duos feature. For me, the most famous pairing I can recall goes back to Bert and Ernie playing the rhyming game - wow, that brings back some memories - but the world of business is full of dynamic duos, their success made all the stronger by a supportive partner by their side. Here in our beautiful city we have our own fair share and this month we had the pleasure of meeting and sharing the inspirational stories of just a few of them. Enjoy the issue and I hope you all have a wonderful October! As for you, winter, see you next year!

DUO There exist people who you instantly click; understand and relate to with the slightest of nods. These duos know success is greatest when you join together. Rarely you find two business partners who go together like Batman and Robin. However, hidden amongst the hustle and bustle of some of Cairns’ most successful businesses are our very own Dynamic Duos. These action-oriented business partners have given us the huge pleasure of understanding what it takes to become a dynamic duo. After all, two heads are better than one.

Laura Neil and Tanya Straguszi Maurice Blackburn

Peas in a pod work to restore dignity “Dedicated, ambitious and passionate,” says Tanya Straguszi when given just three words to sum up colleague Laura Neil. Laura’s smile crumbles a little, not because she’s upset but because Tanya just stole her own answer. No wonder they describe themselves as “peas in a pod”. These particular peas have only been working together since August so you could be excused for thinking they don’t measure up to the Dynamic Duo tag. But their story started long before Laura, as Partner of Maurice Blackbur n Lawyers, convinced Tanya to join the fir m as an Associate. As in all professional circles in Cair ns, the women had crossed paths, and Laura, one of only three Queensland Law Society accredited specialists in the region, had spoken at a conference Tanya organised in her role as head of the North Queensland Law Association. Laura was impressed with Tanya’s work and started talking possibilities. It wasn’t a quick decision. Tanya and Laura met regularly over coffee for half a year before they were ready to join forces. By that time they realised growing up in Gordonvale was not the only thing they had in common – both are passionate about

helping their clients. “Our job is helping people to fight back when they have been wronged. And most importantly get dignity back into their lives … taking away the worry of the bank foreclosing on the house and wondering how to put food on the table for their kids,” Laura says. Tanya slips seamless into the conversation: “We do it because when you meet a client at the end of their case and they give you a big hug, you can see in their eyes what a big difference this makes to their life.” It’s this common drive that makes it hard to believe the duo have been together such a short time. “We really are on the same wavelength,” Laura adds. “By the time Tanya started here as an associate we knew each other so well. In fact, I was on holiday when she started and when I came back two weeks later it was like she had

been here for two years. While Laura is the senior lawyer in the fir m and Tanya looks to her as a mentor in professional matters, the Cair ns Maurice Blackbur n office is clearly a place where everyone has a voice. The women bounce ideas between themselves and fellow lawyer Jason Mills and take an equal role in growing and promoting the business. And it’s not all work. As a sponsor of the local outriggers club the whole office is about to get a lesson in canoeing. Perhaps, for one after noon at least, their dignity will have to take a back seat.

Lynsie James & Melissa Walsh Cancer Council Queensland There aren’t many jobs where the staff would be happy if they were no longer needed – unless of course you are Lynsie James and Melissa Walsh of Cancer Council Queensland. “It’s one of our jokes at meetings, but it would be great if it actually happened,” Lynsie says. With 1000 Far North Queenslander s diagnosed with cancer each year, the pair will unfortunately be in work for some time yet. As regional fundraising coordinator, Lynsie is responsible for activities that contribute to the region’s income targets and supporting the sea of volunteers who work hard to achieve these goals. Vital funds raised across the region enable Cancer Council Queensland to continue to provide lifesaving cancer research, education prog rams and patient support services. Office banter goes “she ear ns it, I spend it,” Melissa chuckles, then goes on to explain as the cancer support coordinator, she looks after the region’s peer

support prog ram, bringing volunteer cancer survivors together with patients in care. Behind the quips though, Melissa and Lynsie take their roles very seriously – they’ve both lost close family members to the disease. “It’s a big responsibility how we invest the money we receive through donations,” Lynsie says. “People want to know where their money goes, so it’s g reat that Mel can meet them and explain her programs first hand. “And, people can have a say – some people want 100 per cent of their donation to go to research, others want 100 per cent to go to patient support services. That’s fine. One of the main questions I get asked is, does the money stay in Cair ns. I explain that Cancer Council ensures funds are directed to where they are needed most, with our region benefiting greatly from facilities such as the Marilyn Mayo Lodge. “T he lodge, named after local woman Marylyn Mayo who passed away from breast cancer, has provided free accommodation to 223 patients who have had to travel from all across Far North Queensland for cancer treatment, plus 196 carers, since its official opening one year ago. It’s a g reat example of community members supporting their community.” It’s a timely discussion given October is Cancer Council’s women’s cancer awareness month, and the community is being asked to dig deep to support the cause. Throughout the region, volunteers – the

lifeblood of Cancer Council’s fundraising efforts – are selling pink ribbons and merchandise ahead of Pink Ribbon Day on October 22, and preparing to host Girls’ Night In events all throughout the month. There are a host of activities planned, including a pink pony parade at Kuranda. Over the years people have come up with an amazing array of activities to raise money for the Cancer Council’s work. A cattle auction immediately springs to Lynsie’s mind, along with all kinds of daredevil pursuits, such

13 I CairnsLife

as skydiving. Asked tongue-in-cheek if a crocodile wresting competition would be out of the question, both ladies laugh – as long as it doesn’t involve tobacco or alcohol and the org aniser s can get public liability insurance, why not! Rowland & Jon Percy BetterPromo

A Better Business

Not every father and son can come together from two unrelated careers and create a successful business. But since 1998, Jon and Rowland Percy have been doing just that, evolving from vending machine sales to the most comprehensive promotional products business north of Brisbane. After a career ranging from Jackeroo, auctioneer, hotelier [Picnic Bay Hotel, Magnetic Island], commercial real estate salesman [earning the title of highest earning salesman in Australia with LJ Hooker in Brisbane & also establishing four Hooker franchises], to owning a four-star caravan park at Mission Beach – nobody could call Jon Percy’s life boring. But, initially, boredom was the impetus that set the next stage of his life in motion back in the late nineties. Son Rowland was in a high profile hospitality career and, with a young son, wanted a more 9-5 lifestyle. The pair joined forces and started a small business, NQ Vending Machines. When Jon and Rowland wanted to thank their clients for their support with a small gift, they called three promotional

companies. “One said our order was too small and the other two just didn’t get back to us,” says Rowland. “We thought, ‘here’s an opportunity!’” When that opportunity knocked, the pair listened. Within a couple of months they had purchased a pad printing machine and Betterpromo was born. At first, the only jobs they had were the ones Jon secured “flogging pens up and down Mulgrave Road”, but today they have clients in nearly every state and territory. With the main catchment area from Townsville out to Mt Isa and up to PNG, it’s Jon and Rowland’s approach to customer service that has earned them their gold star reputation. While Rowland concentrates on bringing in new clients by networking, attending expos and generally greasing the wheels of the business, Jon spends much of his time out on the road. “Out in the western regions of Queensland they don’t see many sales people,” he says. “I know the area from my Jackerooing days so I can go out there in my boots and hat and feel like a part of it.” It’s that personal attention, and what Rowland calls the “give a damn factor”, that sets

Betterpromo apart. “We are a modern business but I don’t think anyone could ever fault us for our care factor,” he says. “We care about our brand and we care about other people’s brands and we continually reinforce the relationships we have with our clients.” Promotional products are recognised for their value by the advertising fraternity and are now a multibillion-dollar industry, reflecting directly on a brand and their attitude to their customers and what these two men don’t know about the industry isn’t worth knowing. “It’s not just about throwing out a cheap key ring with your company branding on it,” says Jon. “It’s about backing up your image with products that do it justice. You can’t sell someone a prestige car then give him a pen that doesn’t work!” From stationery and first aid kits to branded wine glasses and cheese boards, looking around the Betterpromo showroom it seems there are no limits to their creativity. “We like to listen,” says Rowland. “If we have the opportunity to create the ‘wow factor’ we can. But if you just want that plain stubby cooler, we can do

14 I CairnsLife

that too.” Betterpromo has been able to secure partnership deals, meaning costs are kept extremely competitive. “It comes down to volume and budget,” says Jon. “People have this perception they can buy cheaper online or down south, but we source our products from the same places and are generally cheaper.” While Jon won’t be drawn on a retirement date he says there is a “transition period in progress.” Rowland is looking to take the company forward and, with his father an integral part of the business, knows things will have to change eventually. “Dad would be a great loss to the business – he’s old school and has brought things to the company that will be lost. But we have a great team here and everyone has that same old fashioned approach to customer service.” Better by name, better by nature...... the Promotional Products Specialists. The differences between Barristers and Solicitors For the most part, Solicitors are Legal Generalists and Barristers are Specialists. A similar parallel can be drawn between a G.P. and a Medical Specialist. Solicitors are the more likely first point of call for clients requiring legal advice. Solicitors have more direct contact with their clients, whereas Barristers are engaged to provide specialist advice on points of law and to conduct the advocacy needed by the client. There is no difference in the level of complexity in the practice of law by the different branches of the

profession, though Barristers are instructed in complex litigation and in certain other specialist fields. Barristers are the legal experts who appear in wig and gown and represent litigants in Court. The solicitor works directly with the client and is responsible for engaging a qualified and experienced barrister appropriate to the budget of the client and the nature of his or her case. Conventionally, the Barrister {also known as Counsel}has little or no direct contact with their ‘lay clients’, particularly without the presence or involvement of the solicitor who has engaged them. All correspondence , enquiries, invoices, etc will be addressed to the solicitor , who is primarily responsible for the Barrister’s fees. If you are involved in litigation, and your matter is proceeding to Court, your

solicitor will recommend a barrister. The barrister, as an expert in the field, will review the course of action and give the client a fresh and independent opinion . Having our trials conducted by experienced specialist advocates makes for smoother and more professionally run trials. The many tasks perfor med by the barrister in conducting Court appearances are: - Present the opening in the case -Argue the points of law and evidence as they merge in relation to the client’s interest. -Examine the witnesses and cross examine witnesses and if necessary re-examine witnesses. -Argue in relation to admissibility of evidence if the Judge in the matter has a view on this.

16 I CairnsLife

Whereas by contrast, solicitors - Take instructions, - Provide legal advice, - Refer clients onto other specialists such as forensic accountants, financial advisors, valuers and counsellors including psychologists. - Regularly infor m the client of incoming and outgoing correspondence, - Provide copies of current decisions relevant to their case, -Prepare court documents, including schedules and aides memoir for Counsel. In summary, the detailed work of your solicitor combined with Counsel who deliver persuasive submissions, should result in a very satisfied client who has been well and truly heard on the day. by Bev Reaston Partner O’Reilly Stevens Bovey

Ash & Michelle Ash Moseley Homes One large wall of the Ash Moseley Homes’ reception area is filled up with over one hundred awards – recognition of the company’s high standards. The winners of the accolades, Ash and Michelle, barely even acknowledge them. This is a family business where industry acclaim takes a backseat to customer satisfaction. Ash and Michelle Moseley build architect-designed homes, ranging in price from $450,000 to the top end of the market. They offer great f lexibility so the new owner gets exactly what they want, whether it is a specific door handle or a major modification to accommodate a billiard room

with skylight. Naturally, these milliondollar homes aren’t constructed over night. The duo generally spend a year working closely with the new owners – Ash supervising on the jobsite and Michelle kee ping the behind-thescenes running. This method is to ensure that the team keeps its quality of work at a high standard along with getting the project up and running on time. T he awards are a tribute to this well-oiled machine; a machine, like the homes they build, that has been adapted mid-stream when the need arises, such as moving from the g arage office where the business first started, to bringing the couple’s two children into the fir m. Arriving at the office you will be g reeted by daughter Rhiannon, who literally trod the same path as her mum, studying to become a teacher before switching to the building trade. Ethan,

meanwhile, will be on a construction site, tools in hand, just as his dad did in the early days of the 20-yearold business. And if you are lucky, Turbo, the family dog will stop by for a scruff behind the ears.

Paul & Luke Bantoft Cair ns Beaches Realty

SA000213

Paul Bantoft is described as the silent director of Cair ns Beaches Realty. He may not spend much time in the Kewarra Beach office these days, but his presence is everywhere, reflected in the work ethic and love of people passed down to son Luke. Family friend Jackie McMillan gave Paul the nickname BHP, referring to the oil giant’s slogan, “The quiet achiever”. It’s perhaps where father and son deviate a little. It’s not that Luke is a braggart, more that his cheeky forthright manner and youthful outlook make him stand out from the stereotypical image of middleaged men in suits. Recently tur ned 30, Luke was the youngest licensee in Queensland when he, Paul and mother Pauline started Cair ns Beaches Realty 12 years ago. Paul was the front man, Luke concentrated on growing

the Property Management Department and Pauline, known to tenants as “the white glove lady”, kept the whole thing running - until tragedy struck. “Mum died suddenly in 2008,” Luke says. “A brain aneurysm. It shook us all up. Dad “semi-retired”, deciding to concentrate on property development and I took over the main role here at HQ. “What I lear ned was life is like that sometimes. It’s sink or swim.” It’s a lesson that Luke had a taste of as a teenager when his dream of being a pilot was dashed because he is diabetic. He tur ned to what he knew best. Real estate. “Growing up I was always going with dad to business activities. He’d pick me up from school and we would go to an inspection. By 16 I’d seen and experienced every aspect and avenue of the business. “What really made an impact is that every transaction dad was involved in people would become his friends. He would be in the middle of a group, buyers and sellers, everyone shaking hands; it was obvious they trusted and respected him. I’m very

much a socialite and the idea of being part of that, part of what is often the biggest step in someone’s life – making them happy – it really appealed.” The socialite in Luke was put to the test recently when he spent his first Friday evening as a volunteer for Rosies providing food and a kind ear for the city’s homeless. “I admit I was very nervous, even a little apprehensive. But it has been amazing. These are amazing people; they’ve just had it exceptionally tough.” Taking people how they come is part of Paul and Luke’s philosophy, along with sometimes brutal honesty. “Sometimes it works against us. We give people realistic valuations. We may not win as many listings as a result, but when we are proven right, people realise that trust is not just a word to us.” Cairns Beaches Realty Shop 1, Kewarra Village Shopping Centre Kewarra Beach 4879 07 4057 7044 www.cairnsbeachesrealty.com.au

Tegan Kelly&Amanda Ryan U N I Q U E

S A L O N It’s not everyday that a business starts with a text message – one that’s kind of a joke. But that’s exactly how Tegan Kelly and Amanda Ryan sealed their now two-year partnership. The owners of Unique Hair and Beauty have known each other since Tegan began her career as a “tea and tidy” girl at the Edmonton salon Amanda owned. It was the start of a decade-long on-and-off working relationship where the ladies found themselves wielding scissors at

neighbouring mirrors at salons across the city. It could be said their working life g rew a little like a frustrated love affair, always on the cusp of a big moment, but never quite coming to fruition. Until that text message. In 2010 Tegan heard through the grapevine of a salon up for sale. She of course wanted to share the news with her friend. Over the weekend the text messages mounted up as the duo went from joke, to what if to why not. “I think I texted we should go halvies,” Amanda laughs. “And then we did.” What should have been a momentous decision, going into partnership, came naturally to both women. Of course there were doubts but both were secure that they had the skills and clientele for a success business. And more importantly, trusted each other.

For Tegan signing the purchase papers was a dream come true, having deter mined even before that first day as a “tea and tidy” girl that she would one day have her own salon. Amanda had been down that path before, and was resolute she would only go back into business if she had a partner. Tegan says: “We had both had offers before but they didn’t seem right. This was the right one at the right time. We both just knew it was a sure thing.” Their clients ag ree. “So many people have said ‘It’s about time. You’ve finally worked it out!’” Amanda says. While their professional ties have lasted longer than most marriages, they manage to do so without the tension of a long-ter m relationship. Amanda continues: “When you work in such a small environment you do know everything about the other

T E X T person. There are no secrets. But isn’t that what a partnership is all about?” There must be some truth in the statement given the duo’s success. Today they employee two other hairdressers, a third provides beauty treatments in a cosy room behind the basins, and Wella has acknowledge them with entry to the exclusive Wella Red Club. For Tegan and Amanda it is a winning combination, providing the full range of hair and beauty treatments they have always wanted to - from the traditional cut and blow dry to colours, extensions, makeup, waxing and spray tans - and they get to do it together.

Kylie Gabutto and Trudy Di Cola Cair ns Business Women’s Club

“Reluctant networker” is not a tag you would expect for the leader of one of the city’s most popular business groups - “networking queen” would be more likely. Cair ns Business Women’s Club has both. Kylie Gabutto, president of CBWC, used to feel sick to her stomach when asked to attend networking events by a for mer boss. “I would just freeze,” she says. “That’s why I decided to get actively involved – to improve my skill set. Now networking is second nature.” Vice-president Trudy Di Cola has never been afraid to introduce herself to a stranger. “I’m a self-confessed networking junkie,” Trudy says. “These days as my business has g rown I don’t have the time I used to, but previously if there was a networking event, I was there. It’s a g reat combination. As Kylie says, “It really is a nonthreatening environment. We never just leave someone hanging. We pair all newcomers with an existing member so

they have someone to show them around and make sure they are comfortable. I know what it is like to be the “new” networker, and we don’t do that to our guests.” And newcomers don’t have to be women. One of the reasons the group prefers its acronym is that CBWC is open to anyone, of any gender. Today, about 30 per cent of regular attendees are men. “Everyone is welcome,” Trudy stresses. “The stereotypical image of business groups being for cor porate high-f lyers just

doesn’t apply to us. We want everyone in the Cair ns business arena to be part of CBWC, from mumpreneurs, to indigenous and inter national business people, one-man operations and family fir ms to every-day employees.” To prove just how far removed CBWC is from the “nor m” Kylie and Trudy list a networking function at the Cair ns Amateurs as one of the successes of their time at the helm. Similarly, the g roup’s annual awards have become a g ala event with “the g litz and

25 I CairnsLife

g lamour only women can bring”. “Our slog an is ‘Serious fun, while doing serious business’ and we really do mean that,” Kylie says. “We have all had conver sations and concer ns about the economy and the issues facing our region, but I am a glass half full person, we live in paradise - Cair ns is a unique business climate and the CBWC is about promoting the best we have to of fer and looking for opportunities that complement our distinctive and amazing region. With our philosophy of having fun while taking our businesses seriously, we are optimistic and always positive.” T he CBWC meets the second Tuesday of ever y month for a networking luncheon that, true to its word, is both educational and entertaining. Recent speaker s, from Olympians to national Awarding Winning business people, have covered topics ranging from on-line and social media marketing to the success stories behind business icons. If it sounds interesting, whether a reluctant networker or a networking queen, there is a place for you.

Observations from no where in particular By Danny Betros dannybetros@cbre.com.au

"Are's youse that bloke that writes that shit in the the the the Cair nsssssss thing" this lady asked me at the Cair ns Amateurs. Wow I thought, I have a fan, how about this? Ah yes I said with some intrepidation as I stepped a good meter back not sure what I was in for but especially to avoid her breath. Ha ha ha ah ah she slobbered, loved the crap about the nightclub. "I'm a proud bogan ya know," she said as she swayed on one heel, no sign of the other one. Make sure youse talk about the races next time she said as she stumbled off into the crowd. I have no doubt that she doesn't remember talking to me as judging by her intoxication level she is still asleep at the track right now but it is nice to be told you write "shit" that someone loves. I've finally hit the big 50 and part of my celebration was at the track and it's where worlds collide. The sober well dressed well behaved mixed, with the heaving crowds that are getting into it and wearing very little. Saw more f lesh than the bulk meat butcher. More ladies shoes being carried, rather than wor n and a hell of a lot of money being lost, drunk and wor n on heads and dresses on the bodies of some very classy ladies. I can confidently report that as a result of my betting and that of some of my friends, that the bookies have been dining on the finest oysters, eye fillet and lobster...in Europe. In the end I reverted to backing the best looking horse's arse, as all else had failed me and the tips I got were more like the life lessons in how to lose g racefully without crying in public. Now having received so much advice on tur ning 50 there are some dos and don'ts and observations. Firstly, I need to work out how to get the songs "Big Booty Bitches" and "Suck on My Big Fat" off my IPod that my kids snuck on there. I gained revenge by playing the Sex Pistols full on in my car, windows down after I dropped my daughter off to school just as she was walking in. A passing backpacker was impressed.

Secondly find some new jokes for the next poor sole getting old. I don't want to hear any more jokes about going bald, getting fat, no memory, can't drink, fart too much, changing bowel habits, poor sexual perfor mance, chest hair gone g rey and longer than the hair on my head, nose hair growing too fast and caring more about sleep than going out. Someone put some original shit on me-please! Thirdly, as is constantly suggested, I'm not buying the mid-life crises car. Freaked my family out when I told them I was off to buy a HSV Red Holden with all the trims. Kept it up for a while too. The thought of an ageing Lebanese bogan with thinning hair and f luffy dice driving a hot car made my family cringe and divorce is expensive these days. So am avoiding that one. Then there's the next "big" change in mid life - no I'm not getting into the fitness craze of bike riding or triathlons in the early hours of the mor ning wearing all the trendy gear. I get really nervous around lycra-bad bumps and rolls- not a good look. I have all these friends that get up in the dark at about the same time when we used to go to bed so they can go and bike ride. What the..? I want and need my beauty sleep. There's that many of them on the road these days that they have almost become a national pest. We'll have to start a cull soon (Just joking folks-keep zooming past me with those sleek toned bods). Envy is often a good motivator-however not in my case.

Logo Design Be remembered for the good reasons, not the bad

‘‘

Astie Eichner

With any design there are numerous factors to consider. This is apparent in logo design in particular, as it is the sole image of your brand. There are many design principles surrounding a great logo but I believe as long as you follow a few simple tips you should be on the right track.

One of the most important aspects which I like to point out to my clients is simplicity. As much as large amounts of colour and detailed imagery is nice to see, your logo needs to be easy to recognise and able to be captured at a quick glance. My art teacher in high school taught me to follow the KISS rule, meaning Keep It Simple Stupid. Straight to the point and great advice! Making your logo memorable to your potential customers is another vital element when creating a logo. You want your image to play back in their minds when your product is required. This can be achieved by following the first point of

simplicity. If it’s simple, it’s easy to remember. But don’t forget, you want your logo to be remembered for the good reasons not the bad. This brings me to my next point, appropriateness. When considering a logo you should think about how you would like your business/ company to be portrayed to your target audience. As I mentioned earlier, your logo is the sole image of your brand so this needs to ref lect what you are all about. From the font type you use to the colours you decide on, these factors are all brought together to create your message so make sure they are appropriate to your image. My last piece of advice is

27 I CairnsLife

versatility. There won’t just be one single place your logo will need to appear. There will be all types of mediums your logo will be viewed on from business cards to billboards. Regardless of the size there should still be the same amount of clarity and message portrayed. Also, try not to go with the trends that are ‘now’ because you run the risk of having an out dated logo in a few years to come. So remember: simple, memorable, appropriate and versatile and you should end up with a solid logo plan. Astie Design 0438 783 192 info@astiedesign.com.au www.astiedesign.com.au

Summer Beauty Tips Nightly wash This is the most important time to wash your face is before you hit the bed. The days dirt, bacteria, and makeup left on overnight can irritate skin, clog pores, and trigger breakouts. Remove this top layer of grime with a gentle face wash (skin should feel pleasantly tight for 10 to 15 minutes post-cleansing), which also allows anti-agers to penetrate deeper for better results. Because oil production dips with hormonal changes in your 40s, cleansing twice daily can dry out your complexion and make wrinkles look more pronounced. To refresh skin in the morning, splash with lukewarm water.

with a built-in broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, be sure to apply one daily to block both UVA and UVB rays. Eat omega-3s These "good fats" in foods such as salmon, flaxseed, and almonds boost hydration, which keeps skin supple and firm. The same isn't true of the saturated fat in dairy products and meats, which increase free-radical damage that makes skin more susceptible to aging. Limit saturated fat intake to about 17 g daily.

Get UV obsessed Most importantly Nothing is wearing sunscreen every day if you want younger-looking skin. Even 10 minutes of daily exposure to UVA "aging" rays can cause changes that lead to wrinkles and sunspots in as few as 12 weeks. If your moisturizer isn't formulated

Retirement T he million dollar question (Pardon the pun). When people ask me this questions I respond by asking them – how much do you want? T his is me being a bit cheeky but there are a few questions to ponder before the big one can be answered accurately. Such as:

• How much does it cost you to live today - what is your budget? • W hen do you want to retire- what age? • W hat’s the bucket list – those retirement dreams? • W hat do you want to leave your estate? T he kids…SKI (spend the kids inheritance) or create a le gacy? • Is there longevity in your family? Do your genes indicate you live to your 100’s? Pleasant surroundings and “The feel good factor” is exactly what Christine and Dirk Daniels tried to achieve at BULLSNIPS MENS HAIRCUTTERS AND GROOMING SALON.

As soon as you walk through the doors at BULLSNIPS, you are greeted by the friendly team of stylists and grooming specialist. “It’s a whole new experience for a guy, to come to us”, says Christine. Dirk and I found that there are a growing number of men in Cairns that would like to pamper themselves regarding grooming but are a little bit embarrassed to sit in the waiting area of a ladies beauty salon.

We noticed there was no such place as a one stop Shop for men, except in the major cities e.g. Melbourne. It’s getting really big there now with mens, grooming. We thought, why not have a, one stop Barber shop, where you can have everything from Hair cutting, Traditional Shaves to Waxing, Massage to Face, Hand and Feet Treatments and Special designed Packages . These days, more man like to look after their appearance because it makes them feel good. We have a very loyal customer base. I love going to work every day because our clients are so fantastic and easy going , and why not spoil them with a hot towel scalp massage after a haircut or a cold towel on arrival, when it is hot outside”, Christine says. I am a great believer in good quality customer service. Christine and Dirk purchased BULLSNIPS last year, July. “As soon as we saw it was for sale, we saw the potential and endless says. Dirk possibilities”, BULLSNIPS had been operating for the last 17 years. I used to go there before Christine came into my life”, Dirk laughs. In the front line there may be

Christine cutting and shaving but behind the scenes you will find Dirk, the creator, decorator and “Men thinking” mind of this recently, newly decorated Retro Barber shop. “I look after the cutting and shaving and Dirk adds his men touch and ideas to the rest. That sounds like a winning combination to me”, Christine laughs. I listen to him. He is a man and he knows what men like. Christine and Dirk were both born in Germany. Christine has been hairdressing for over 20 years and has worked all over the world. I gathered a lot of travelling from experience around the world. One minute I’m doing celebrities hair like Queen and Rod Stewart in Sun City, South Africa and next thing I am being taught Barbering and Shaving in Canada by this little Italian guy. Christine arrived in Cairns 13 years ago. I fell in love with Cairns the minute I got here and still do, says Christine. Dirk arrived in Cairns 21 years ago, after living in North America for several years. Dirks background is in construction but Dirk’s love for working with wood, creating, building and recycling almost everything he can get his hands on, has had

30 I CairnsLife

many rewarding results. “He loves the WOW factor and I love his brilliant ideas he comes up with”, Christine says. “We met in Cairns and married 4 years ago under a tree at Kewarra Beach. I always say, we must have been together in our past life because the first time I met Dirk it felt like I’d known him forever, says Christine. We both love the lifestyle up here. In summer, our pool becomes our office. We sit in there and over a couple of drinks, we brain storm for new ideas, talk about our vision and goals. We both love travelling and have done so extensively. It’s a great way of picking up new ideas and seeing what other people are doing. Although it may take some time to get the grooming part to take off, but in the meantime, we just keep cutting and show the men of Cairns, that grooming is not just for woman. Grooming is not about “I don’t need it” it’s more about feeling good about yourself. It brings confidence and on top of that, women like it too. 3/156 Aumuller Street Bungalow (07) 4051 6344

“The neighbours have a secret”

by Paul Egan

Today’s discer ning travelers strive to find the unique and exotic and are willing to travel great distances to achieve this, yet they continue to ignore our nearest neighbor. At just under ninety minutes flight away is a country that has a compelling list of reasons to visit. Papua New Guinea is striking in its natural beauty, there is a myriad of animal and plant species and the complex cultures are riveting. PNG remains one of the world’s last frontier destinations. Tourism is still in its infancy although the numbers are growing. In 2011 35,704 people holidayed in PNG, a 13% increase on 2010 and numbers have double since 2005. A very large proportion of these numbers will trek the famous Kokoda Trail, the foremost attraction and a pilgrimage site for Australians, New Zealanders, Americans and Japanese. If World War Two history is your thing, then there is a multitude of other locations, such as Milne Bay where the battle that occurred there is considered to be the first in the Pacific campaign in which Allied troops decisively defeated Japanese land forces. PNG has more WWII history than anywhere else.

With its mountainous terrain, dense jungles and seriously under developed infrastructure travel can be challenging, but that it all part of the appeal. It is probably never going to be a mass tourism destination such as Fiji and other Pacific Island countries although many of the locations are equally as stunning. PNG appeals to those seeking adventure and to certain niche markets, such as diving, trekking, surfing, game fishing and bird watching which offer unrivalled experiences. There are some really extraordinary places that are accessible, but only by air or boat and that isolation is again, very much part of the appeal. With over 600 islands you can be sure of getting away from it all. Just 100 years ago a large chunk of PNG’s varied population had had no contact with the outside

world and still used Stone Age tools. What this means is that the cultural experience you get is going to be authentic Nothing is contrived for tourists. One of my favourite things to do is to visit the local markets held in most places, wander around and simply absorb the unique experience at the same time as you are being observed by a host of cheerful, betle nut stained, smiling, welcoming faces. Unfortunately PNG gets a lot of negative press, particularly as far as safety is concer ned. It is a sad fact of human nature that opinions are for med that are based on the behaviour of the few and this then shapes the reputation of the masses. Whilst I understand the concer ns when it comes to the capital, Port Moresby, I truly believe that PNG’s dangerous reputation is

based on just a small proportion of the population. The people I have met on my eight visits could not have been more caring and hospitable. At a local dance club (read semi underground bunker) in volcano ravaged Rabaul, my travelling companion and I were the only white faces in a sea of locals and at no time did I feel threatened. More exhausted to be honest, our dance cards were full! I know it is a hard sell, but if you want a holiday that is full of adventure in pristine, unique destinations then think about Papua New Guinea. We are so lucky here to have a destination right on our doorstep that has so much to offer. It won’t always stay this way, the secret is going to get out. If you want a truly life-affir ming experience then think about going to one of the many “Sing Sings” – cultural shows that occur throughout the country at various times. Alter natively book a rustic hut at Nusa Island Retreat on a small island just off the coast of Kavieng in the north of New Ireland, truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Where ever you choose to travel this year have fun

CrossFit Barrier Reef Picture this; a gym full of muscled, sweaty, guys and girls grunting and throwing massive weights around. That's what the YouTube CrossFit videos had shown me, and I was ter rified. I'm an unfit 41 year old mother of 3; CrossFit was NOT for me. The reality of what greeted me at my first class at CrossFit Barrier Reef was quite different.

100%?

Dragged along by my workmate who was already a convert, I was met by Coach Jojo cradling a tiny baby, and introduced to her partner Tim and the 5:30 crew. We had, of course, a couple of the aforementioned scary-fit looking members, and four other "nor mal" people. There was even a Grandma in our class! What struck me the most was how friendly and welcoming everyone was. I'd be lucky at my usual gym if anyone would notice if I dropped dead on the elliptical. All new CrossFitters must complete a Fundamentals session, where Tim demonstrated how to squat, push up, bur pee and sit up properly...tur ns out I'd been doing it wrong all these years! CrossFit utilizes gymnastics, running, kettlebells, weightlifting and more, but first we had to lear n the basics. We completed a "Baseline" assessment, which involved all of the

exercises we had lear ned, plus a run. I remember thinking "is that all?" before we started, but by the end, I had worked out harder than I ever knew I could, and it only took me 8 minutes. While all this was happening, Jojo AND the baby were Coaching the others in some Olympic Lifting ; I have never in my life seen anyone run a fitness class holding a 4 week old. But that's part of what makes CrossFit Barrier Reef special.

HEALTHY OIL! Did you know 1 in 3 Australians don’t eat enough fish? Fish oil is the oil from fish. It has received a lot of positive attention in the last few year s. With an increasing number of people knowing the difference between good and bad fats, more people are appreciating the many benefits of fish oil. Other than potential benefits for general health, fish oil also has potential anabolic effects.

Where Does Fish Oil Come From? Fish oil is the oil extracted from the tissues and belly cavities of certain species of fish considered to be "oily fish". Some species include salmon, sardines, anchovies, trout, and mackerel.

Fish Oil Benefits The many benefits of fish oil generally stem from its high content of long chain omega 3 fatty acids. Two notable mentions include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are both essential fatty acids that we cannot make. Within the body they are converted to a group of hor mones that have many beneficial functions. In essence, EPA and DHA are basically pro-hor mones.

Urge and Stress Incontinence Incontinence in the adult population is more common in females than males and this is for obvious reasons. The sphincter muscle that controls the bladder is not as strong, the bladder may have a tendency to “drop down” and there may be damage to the pelvic floor in childbirth. Urge incontinence is when a person is unable to suppress the need to pass urine and there is leakage before getting to the toilet. Sometimes the whole bladder may empty. There can be many reasons for this. There can be infection present, there might be sensitivity to caf feine or alcohol, some medications cause it, occasionally a small capacity bladder may develop, diabetes affects it and sometimes a person may have arthritis which prevents getting there quickly. Stress incontinence occurs when the pressure on the bladder increases suddenly such as a cough, laugh or sneeze and then leakage occurs. Some people develop a combination of both urge and stress incontinence. The diagnosis of incontinence is usually made on the patient’s history (description) of how and when it occurs. A urine test is usually carried out and an ultrasound or Xray may be required. It may be necessary to have a bladder examination (cystoscopy) carried out.

It is disappointing to read, hear and see that in a number of media areas that the answer to this is to wear pads when many can be cured or significantly helped by treatment. Consuming approximately two litres of water per day will assist with “f lushing the system”. Maintaining a healthy body weight is important as the pressure of abdominal fat on a bladder will reduce its ability to fill and hold urine. Reducing caf feine containing drinks and alcohol may be helpful as well as maintaining a healthy, regular bowel habit. Pelvic f loor exercises and timed toileting (holding on for a few minutes when the urge starts) can be assisted by physiotherapy. Sometimes medications may be prescribed to reduce the “ir ritability” of the bladder and finally, surgery may be required. That may take the for m of a “repair” where the bladder is lifted back to the correct position and fixed in place or a “sling” is inserted at the bladder opening to create a “kink” to stop leakage with the cough or sneeze. Alter natively, a substance can be injected at the opening of the bladder rather like putting a new washer in a tap. This has the same effect as making a person’s lips larger in cosmetic application. T his type of procedure is done as a day surgery case and there are no cuts made.

It has been a year and seven months since Gelocchio landed in Cair ns, bringing a product not seen in Australia ever before: Artisan gelato on a stick! Being a 100% natural product, it has been welcomed in many countries over the world. Gelocchio’s mission is to provide Australia with an opportunity to appreciate the scrumptiousness only Gelocchio has to offer! For the people that have not yet seen or tried their product, here is a bit of an insight on how it’s made and what they use. The Ice cream and sorbets on a stick made on the premises are genuine. T heir compact for m, unlike the traditional ice cream, does not necessitate additional artificial ing redients, therefore allowing the product to remain 100% natural. Any f lavour in the cabinet can be dipped in chocolate and rolled in different types of nuts. Unfortunately, at first sight, some

people think the product is just a simple icy pole but it isn’t! The fresh local fruit and dairy make Gelocchio’s ice creams and sorbets unique and quality products where one bite will distinguish them from a readymade icy pole. After drowning your tastebuds with a creation that contains 93% of the actual fruit, you will taste the difference. Gelocchio recently integrated the traditional ice cream on cones and in cups to please a wider range of customers and it is so far voted the best in town. And of course, made on premises too! Cones of stracciatella, amaretto, cassata siciliana and last but not least authentic Sicilian pistacchio! Give Gelocchio a go and see for yourself !

Gelocchio offers over 35 flavours of which 30 are 100% natural. T he two steps at the front of the shop are well worth it.

Cairns Central Fashion Pod Wandering through the centre of Cair ns, visitors could be excused for thinking shorts and ill-fitting t-shirts are the height of style. The demand for pointers at the Cair ns Central Fashion Pod last month however proves Far Norther ners are not only proud of their appearance but keen to try the latest looks. Gerlinda Aras, the resident stylist at Cair ns Central and facilitator of the Fashion Pod, says Cair ns area residents definitely haven’t given up on style. “People assume that because we are in Cair ns we are a bit more relaxed. People come up from Melbour ne or Sydney and just give up because everyone dresses so casually.” She pauses to study the 20 or so people in the immediate area. “But there are plenty of ways of being casual and stylish. Everyone here looks good, they obviously care. I always say, though, everyone has an opportunity to look that little bit better!” That was the philosophy behind the Fashion Pod – helping people identify what works for them, their colour, body shape and skin type, and providing practical tips for fashion and beauty in the Far North. “There are a lot of little things,” Gerlinda says. “In this heat, makeup just slides of f, so we sug gest people use tinted moisturiser and water proof mascara, for instance. The humidity can play havoc with some hair types, but there are products for that. It may sound obvious but it does make a difference.” The first time the Fashion Pod concept has been used outside Sydney, shoppers did need a little encouragement to venture in to the styling area. It was a short-lived lull however, with one-on-one consultations snapped up quickly once word got out. “We’ve had people that have had such a good time they’ve come back with their girlfriends. And it’s not just teenagers - I’ve had sessions with a 70-year-old and even a women in her 90s.” It just proves that looking good, like fashion, is a matter of personal choice. If you missed out on the Fashion Pod, you can still benefit from Gerlinda’s expertise. The accredited image consultant has been helping Cair ns men and women with their fashion and beauty choices for the past seven years, including the past 12 months as the centre’s in-house personal shopper. Book a time via the centre’s Customer Service Desk 07 40 477 422. And never fear, the Pod will retur n. Judging by the debut success, fashionistas are advised however to keep their eyes peeled for announcements and get in early or risk missing out.

HAIRDRESSER OF THE MONTH How long have you been a Hairdresser for? I’ve been hairdressing for just over four years – I did a prevocational course that shortened my apprenticeship and now I am currently managing the salon I’m at.

What do you enjoy most about being a Hairdresser? Every day is a different day, I learn new things and I meet new people. I love developing a friendship with my clients and making them feel like a brand new person when they leave the salon.

Te s s C a t t a n a

Where are you currently working? Glo Hairstylists at Trinity Beach – a Loreal Professional salon. What made you become interest in Hairdressing? Ive wanted to be a hairdresser since I was very young. I love to make people feel better about themselves and almost give them a new lease on life.

Who do you look up to and why? My two grandfathers – one who was a cane farmer and the other who is a returned soldier have instilled great values in my life which has shaped me into the person I am and kept me grounded. They have always inspired me to be the best I can be in whatever I do.

What's the best thing about being a Hairdresser in Cairns? Because of the size of Cairns, you build up a loyal clientele who put a lot of trust in you and what you do – so it’s fun to get them to try new and different things. Being out at the beaches is great for clients to come somewhere relaxing but still get the city salon look.

Current trend do you love the most? Loreal have a spring collection that is full warm natural colours and soft cuts and upstyles – I love doing hair that everyone can wear – intricate and alternative styles are great fun, but most clients want a hairdresser that can do a great colour and cut that suits them, which is what I enjoy the most.

Hair trends are constantly changing, how do you keep up to date with the latest trends? Our salon attends loreal and various other courses in Brisbane and here in

Cairns – doing training in upstyles, cutting techniques and learning the chemistry behind colour.

PLAYING THIS MONTH

TRICHOTOMY [by Andre w Masterson]

Not only is he looking forward to playing the Jazz Up North series at Tanks on Friday 19 October, but he is also well pleased with progress on the band’s new album. “We’ve just been wrapping up the mixing,” he says. “We did most of the recording in Sydney, in July. We went into the studio for four days and just recorded about 17 tracks, of which we’re using nine or 10.” It was a hyper-disciplined recording session for any genre of music, but especially so for jazz, which revels in improvisation and unpredictability. The approach of Sean and his colleagues – drummer John Parker and bassist Pat Marchisella – indicates just why Trichotomy are currently enjoying considerable attention on the British and European jazz circuits. “We like to have everything totally nutted out before we get into recording,” says Sean. “It makes for really intense days, because a lot of the stuff is quite intricately written. That allows the improvisation to be blended in on the day.” Fans of Trichotomy have compared the music to that of avant garde outfits, such as America’s The Bad Plus and Australia’s own The Necks. The trio’s scholarly approach to music however, is often balanced by an undeniable rock sensibility which has led to comparisons with Radiohead. The new material looks set to prompt still more art-rock references, and has given Sean yet another reason to be cheerful. “It’s all very vibrant, full of life,” he says. “Our last album, The Gentle War, was quite dark and intense and introspective. This one is light and joyful. The recording is full of air. I

guess the music reflects where we all are in our lives. It feels like it’s been such a good year, full of really interesting projects.” The trio’s show at Tanks is the next fun project on the agenda – an opportunity to play much of the material from the forthcoming album in front of a live audience. It will be the first time many of the compositions have been perfor med in public – a mark of just how important the Jazz Up North series has become on the national music scene. The title of the album remains confidential. It will be revealed in February, when it is released simultaneously in Australia and Britain. “Yeah, the title is still top secret,” laughs Sean, “But I can reveal that we’re going to release some vinyl copies.” After virtually disappearing from the music industry in the early Nineties, vinyl LPs are increasingly making a comeback – especially for jazz outfits, which really suits the war m tone the old-style method produces. Trichotomy’s UK label, NAIM, is particularly keen to expand its vinyl range. On the other side of the coin, Trichotomy are emerging as one of the most forward-thinking jazz bands in the world. They are one of the only Australian jazz outfits to have their own app – which can be download onto smart-phones and mobile devices. “It’s early days with the app, but I think it’s really going to come into its own with the new album,” says Sean. “It will have lots of music and other stuff on it. You’ll be able to load it into your phone and away you go!” After the show at Tanks, the trio are set to play a show in Brissie’s Powerhouse. A long, happy Xmas break will follow, after which Sean, John and Pat are set for a tour of the jazz rooms of Britain. This year was a good one for Trichotomy; next year looks like it might be even better. Trichotomy perfor ms at Tanks Arts Centre as part of the 2012 Jazz Up North Series on Friday 19 October. Tickets are available from Ticketlink (www.ticketlink.com.au)

TRICHOTOMY FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER Trichotomy (formerly known as Misinterprotato) are one of Australia’s most inventive contemporary music ensembles. They expand the capacities of the classic piano / bass / drums combination with elements of the avant-garde and the fresh attitude they bring to their music. “This is a genuine trio, with three equally important parts, and they never put a foot or finger wrong. 5 stars!” - BBC Music Magazine. How to pick a winner this Melbourne Cup! If you are just beginning to try to pick winners at the horse races, there are some very basic things that you should know. Just knowing these few simple rules or observations will shorten the lear ning curve considerably and help you to find winners much more quickly. First and foremost of all, you should know that people don't make a living by picking winning horses. While you may see many people at the race track who are poring over their racing programs and for ms and

it appears they are looking for winners, they are not the ones who will win consistently at the races. T he problem is that you can't separate the ones who are trying to figure out which horse will win from the ones who are looking for good bets. That is the secret to making money betting on horse races. You aren't looking for winning hor ses, but rather horses who will win at such a price (odds) that when they do win, it makes up for all the times you backed similar horses who lost with a profit left besides. In other words, if you bet a type of horse in a particular situation ten times and it wins some of the time, even once, if the odds are right, you'll still make money. So as you begin to lear n the basics of handicapping, keep that in mind. It is important to have a good idea of which horse is likely to win and which one is

second most likely to win, etc. But it is more important to be able to tur n that into a mathematical equation that tells you which odds you should be looking for on the board. Now that we have established that, let's talk about speed. While they are not perfect, speed figures do give us a good idea of how fast a horse ran in each of its races. You will find that if you average their last few races and compare their averages, the winner is found in the top three horses the majority of the time. So if you confine your efforts to deter mining which horses have shown the most speed in their last few races, you will be on the winner most of the time. Narrowing the choices down to just three horses certainly makes handicapping a lot easier, but it gets even better. Checking the mor ning line, you'll find that the winner is usually in the top three horses

60 I CairnsLife

in the mor ning line. It doesn't hurt to have a little help with your handicapping so always check the mor ning line and give more weight to the horses who are in the top three odds. If you are looking to make a consistent profit, stick with the most consistent hor ses. Find out each hor ses win average based on its wins over the last year. T he hor se with the highest win average is most likely to win. I know it sounds ridiculously simple, but that doesn't mean that is all you have to do to make money betting on hor ses. You see, many people know these things and use them and that is why it is so hard to find good prices on these horses, but sometimes they do slip by the crowd and pay well. Finding these golden betting opportunities is part of the fun of handicapping.

Puppy Pre-School There is nothing more gorgeous than the soft fur, adoring eyes and playful innocence of a puppy. In those first few weeks they mesmerise even the most hardened soul with their antics. In most cases this period of adoration is shoft lived. Gradually the joy of welcoming this little canine into your life is oveftaken by moments of frustration and disappointment. The treasured pup is becoming an unruly misbehaving adolescent and those moments of innocence and calm seem to be a distant -memory. Dogs have a crucial "Imprint" period during the first few months of their lives and this is the most relevant development stage in their growth process. Their social skills develop and they are most receptive to their environment. They learn to socialise with other dogs and people and to be accepting of all of the new experiences that are part of living in our modern world. It is during this period that a puppy training class is most beneficial for your puppy. Socialisation and play with other pups is controlled and supervised and this also allows for positive interaction with other people. These classes are designed to help owners have a greater understanding of dogs. They encourage safe interaction with other pups and their owners and cover everything from basic obedience commands, canine behaviour, handling skills and general health care.

In their natural state pups are raised in the hierarchy of a pack and from the first day are educated as to the rules and boundaries of their group. When we welcome a puppy into our lives we must assume this role as their "pack leader." As their owners we provide companionship, give them direction, educate them and positively intrpduce them to their new environment. Many common canine behaviour problems can be avoided with early interuention at this age. Well educated puppies are generally more content and better behaved and as they mature are well adapted and emotionally stable. They socialise confidently and are able to adapt to living in a wide variety of situations. The basic commands they learn at an early age assist the owner in establishing and maintaining a more controlled and enjoyable relationship with their puppy. These pups also progress well into higher levels of training. Attending a reputable puppy pre-school will be one of the most impoftant and valuable commitments you can make as you embark on the wonderfuljourney of dog ownership. by Linda Mair C e r t Tr a i n e r / B e h a v o u r i s t

What is your name? My name is Chrystal or Xtal for short How long have you been a tattoo artist for? I became Eddie James's first apprentice when he opened his shop in 2007, so it's been five years this year. What inspired you to become a tattoo artist? The art! I've always drawn or painted and sculpted so I thought it would be awesome to be able to express my artistic side on a daily basis as a tattooist. It's not just a nine to five, it's so much more than that. Where do you currently work? Eddie James Design

What do you love most about your job? I meet people from all walks of life, and when they pick a design I have drawn specially for them that will be on their body for the rest of their life, It's just the best feeling! It makes my day when they look at my work with a smile and say "I love it!" What was your first tattoo and why did you get it? A little dragon on my neck. I had it in a school book for about six years before I actually got it tattooed. I used to draw alot of dragons in high school. I just liked them.

What is the weirdest tattoo you have ever given? Well it's not really weird, but I was shocked when a group of ladies aged in their 80s came in to get a little butterfly each. They told me they had all be visiting their mothers grave when a big bunch of butterflies flew down around them, so they saw that as a sign and decided to get them tattooed. I don't know if their mother would have approved of their decision but I thought it was just beautiful.

68 I CairnsLife

What qualifications do you need to become a tattoo artist? Well you need a good portfolio of your artwork for starters. You need to be able to impress the tattooist you want to teach you. You also need a good attitude and alot of dedication. It's a long and rocky road, with alot of sweeping floors, making coffee, cleaning, serving customers, and drawing. You also need to do a cert 3 in infection control. and did I mention drawing! you'll be drawing in your sleep!!

How long have you been a chef for? 14 years Where do currently work? Shangri-la Marina Cair ns What made you want to become a chef ? A mix of watching my father lear n how to cook when he retired at 40 and attending a school where the meals were, to say the least, pretty average What is the best thing about your job? Travel and the culture - I have worked in 7 countries & each one presents different challenges and the food is vastly different What ingredient can you not live without? I have two ingredients - Maldon Salt & Pigs (any part really) What techniques do you take from the restaurant and put into your own home cooking? A shar p knife, much to the dislike of Kirsty’s fingers! What do you like to do when you're not cooking? Cycle, wakeboard and read cook books What is your favourite food? I struggle to go past a good pasta, also freshly baked sour dough. We baked one at midsummer house in Cambridge and the starter was 9 years old and just amazing. Well tempered dark chocolate is also up there on my list of favourite foods. What do you love most about cooking in Tropical North Queensland? The proximity to the Tablelands and all the fresh fruit and vegetables made available from there. As well as the seafood of course - you just can’t fault it!

Bellavista Restaurant

In an effort to retur n to its roots, Bellavista at The Pier has raised the bar so to speak by appointing head chef Liam Lowe and introducing a new menu to accommodate a more exclusive clientelle. Open from 12pm to 12am daily with breakfast plans also in the pipeline, they now offer an affordable a la carte lunch and dinner menu combined with a relaxed dining atmosphere. My companion and I were fortunate to experience the new menu for ourselves recently with an enjoyable lunch overlooking the esplanade and marina. After being greeted by Venue Manager Caz Sydenham we were lead out to the large outdoor terrace in order to take in the view. Here we were offered a choice of seating ranging from a relaxed lounge area through to high tables with bar stools, of which we chose the latter. After opting for Caz’s recommendations, our friendly waitress Kylie promptly brought out two generously sized dishes from their $8 entrée selection. The first, a prawn & calamari fritte accompanied by a tzatziki dip was tender and

tasty but soon upstaged by the sumptuous smoked chicken and porcini mushroom arancini complimented by a garlic mayonnaise. Of course a trip to Bellavista wouldn’t be complete without sampling their pizza and on this occasion we opted for a delicious combination of ricotta, spinach, semi-dried tomatoes, smoked chicken and toasted almonds. We were also excited to try a dish from their specials of the day, the gold spot trevally fillet with chat potatoes and silverbeet gratini that was accompanied by a unique and refreshing roasted baby beetroot and orange salad. With an extensive wine list available by the glass, it would have been tempting to settle in for the after noon. But with deadlines calling it was great to be able to enjoy this wonderful escape within our lunch hour with the convenience of 2 hours free undercover parking. Overall with both lunch and dinner mains priced under $20 and a $10 dessert menu, customers can enjoy great quality food at an affordable price. And as the names suggests, diners can experience the beautiful waterfront view both day and night.

Wine The snow is melting, birds and insects are fluttering about, plants and grass are starting to turn green and come back to life…well that’s what spring is in some parts of the world. In north Queensland, it is getting warmer, days longer, sun shining in the sky and horse race season fast approaching. It is time to celebrate that the cooler months are gone for another year! With the seasons changing, we also change the wines we choose to consume just as we change our diets and wardrobes. People start craving lighter, fresher meals in spring so when picking a wine, we need to take these different ingredients into consideration. Light wines are perfect for spring and white wine in particular. There is something about sitting outside with a crisp, cold glass of white wine with the spring sun shining on you in the middle of the afternoon. It’s amazing. A sparkling wine is always a perfect way to celebrate everything, especially Spring and the upcoming warm months. It is perfect for those cheeky mimosas with breakfast, antipasto platters in the middle of the after-

e review noon, a light salad and grilled fish lunch, or a toast to accompany dessert. Some folks like to snub ‘sparkling wine,’ and only drink champagne. But there is little difference nowadays to the average wine drinker because some winemakers are mastering the bubbles just as well as the French do. Champagne is essentially sparkling wine, but can only be called Champagne if the grapes are grown in the region and made using the traditional method in Champagne, France. When purchasing a sparking wine there is an overwhelming selection and it’s hard to tell what is good and what is cheap (that has it’s time and place). I love dry

sparkling wines so I go for a brut or extra-dry on the label. ‘Sec’ basically means slightly sweet and ‘doux’ is what the sweet-tooth drinkers should go for. A safer bet is a Pinot Noir Chardonnay blend, which today you can find lots that offer the same toasty, bread and butter notes you get from Champagne. Buy a couple bottles and see what you like. You don’t need a two hundred dollar bottle of bubbles to cheers before the races, a lot of the time it’s the name you’re paying for. Just ask your sales clerk for help to find the bubbles that are fit for you!

SO what is the fastest car on the planet! As soon as the first motor carriage rolled out of Karl Benz’s workshop way back in 1886, man has wanted to go ever faster. Capable of a heady 8mph, that first threewheeled carriage was by default the fastest road car in the world – because it was the only one. In 2011, a full 125 years later, the stakes are rather higher. With the fastest road car now capable of nearly 270mph, it’s going to be interesting watching how far we can go, and how fast those further records tumble.

How long until the first production road car that can achieve 300mph? Bugatti Veyron the fastest car in the world at 267 mph. Bugatti’s boffins didn’t like the idea of those American upstarts nicking their record, so in 2010 it unleashed a re-engineered Veyron capable of raising the record by more than 11mph. The car was driven by Pierre-Henri Raphanel, at Ehra-Lessien.

4WD handy hints There are a number of things you should consider before departing on your 4WD holiday. Whether you are a 4WD veteran or a first timer, these handy hints should assist you in having a safe and exciting holiday. * Always carry 30-50% more food, water and petrol when driving in sandy area * Always have an appropriate

collection of spare parts on hand so that you are prepared for any damage to your 4WD * Before driving through water in your 4WD a good idea is to administer a repellent such as WD40 to the electrical components * Be prepared for getting bogged down in rough ter rain by purchasing the appropriate tools for vehicle recovery * Consider the driving conditions you are likely to encounter before you depart * Driver fatigue is a dangerous and worrying ly common aspect of longdistance driving. It is recommended that you don't drive for more than 2 hours without stopping * For your own safety you should report any remote trips you are undertaking to an appropriate official * If driving over a ditch or logs, cross it at an ang le to ensure that only one tyre

goes over the obstacle at a time - the other 3 tyres will help get the vehicle over * If possible keep the windows closed in your vehicle when travelling on the highway i.e. 100km/hour+ this reduces your petrol consumption * If you are expecting to drive in muddy conditions you will need to use selfclearing tyres * Joining one of the many 4WD clubs in your area is a great way to meet people and g ain infor mation from experienced enthusiasts * Keep in mind that rocky roads use up to 30% more petrol * Prepare your Outback survival techniques in advance in case an emergency situation arises * Put chains on your tyres as soon as you feel them slipping on the road, track etc - its too late once you're stuck * Reverse gears use more fuel

86 I CairnsLife

* To increase fuel efficiency buy petrol at the time of day when the temperature is at its coolest - this is because petrol is at its densest during this time * Tr y and maintain your speed, constant speeding up and slowing back down uses more fuel * When driving across a river/creek crossing tr y to drive slightly ag ainst the cur rent for the fir st part, then slightly with the current to help you exit the crossing * When driving down a steep hill in your 4WD you must try to drive in a straight line or as close to it as you can. Use the lowest gear possible and drive as slowly as you can * When driving in sand the best sort of tyres are ones that are relatively bald with less air pressure For more great 4WD advice and forums go to www.australianexplorer.com

The juvenile black marlin have been dominant along the East Coast of Queensland from the Whitsundays through to Cairns and further North throughout our winter months. Good numbers that we haven’t seen for a few years, providing great action not only for the larger charter boats but opportunities for plenty of local trailer boats to get amongst them and not have to travel too far to find them. With such consistent numbers of the smaller marlin around we’re anticipating a good heavy tackle black marlin season throughout the remainder of the year. From September through to December, the largest black marlin in the world migrate to the 150 mile stretch of the Great Barrier Reef between Cair ns and Lizard Island each year. This is unquestionably the best giant black marlin location in the world, and attracts anglers from all over the globe. It was the black marlin fishery that initially put Cair ns on the map as an Inter national tourist destination more than 40 years ago, when Capt George Bransford and his deckhand Richard Obach caught the first 1000lb plus black marlin off Cair ns. Since then, the Cair ns marlin fishing fleet has been at the forefront of “catch and release of the big marlin worldwide with a priority to caretake the fishery.

We have been tagging and releasing marlin here for 40 years and now with the latest satellite tags available we are lear ning even more about the habits of the mysterious black marlin. Thanks to the efforts of the Cair ns Professional Game Fishing Association and the conservation ethics shown by the Cair ns charter fleet, the fishery is in as good condition now as it has been for over the 40 years. The fishery here is predominantly a bait fishery with usually two to three rods at one time trolled from the outriggers and up to 4 rods trolled using lures. Favourite baits include scad (Cair ns’ No.1 swimming bait), mack tuna, scaley mackerel, Spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, queenfish and rainbow runners. These baits can be as large as 15 kg 30 lbs) though preferred size being 8 to 12 lb for the skip baits and 1 to 5 lb for the swimming scads. The crew rig these baits on circle hooks trolled just under and on the surface at speeds varying between 5 to 6 knots, utilising short drop backs knowing that these always give the best percentage of mouth-hooked fish. Circle hooks provide excellent results with fish released in great condition. If you love your fishing and have never experienced the excitement of catching a black marlin, October is a fantastic month to do so. There are many professional charters boats available throughout the marlin season fully equipped with the latest fishing equipment and skilled crew to ensure you the trip of a lifetime. Tight lines till next month.

PortLife October and school holidays are here. The town affectionately known as “Port” is pumping. The vibe down Macrossan street is electric and infectious. Visitors from down south, yes Cair ns, you are souther ners, are all smiles. The stress, the hurried lifestyle, the crowded streets, traffic jams and the parking meters are all gone. Its almost as if your life takes a deep breath. A breath of clean, oxygenated air that clears the mind and invigorates the soul. This is my favourite time of year, with sunny days and balmy nights. The winds are light and the visibility on the reef is sensational. The wildlife know spring is in the air as vivid colours and noisy courting behaviour begins. The noisy metallic starlings retur n to Macrossan street, a favourite for photographers, while the clown like antics of the colourful lorikeets entertains visitors and locals alike. As is often said to me, you could be anywhere in the world, in Port Douglas. The views of Tahiti with the cosmopolitan feel of Paris, maybe? This incredible place is the ultimate getaway. What makes this destination so special after the amazing environment? The people. In this months issue you will read about just a few of the dynamic duos that make this region Australia’s most sort after holiday destination. From your coach ride from the air port, the resort looking after your accommodation, the reef vessel taking you on an amazing adventure, the tour into the oldest living rainforest in the world, the Daintree, to the restaurant and bar where you end your day indulging in the gastronomic delights of the Douglas region. Yes, behind every experience, there is the regions quiet achievers, the dynamic duos that work tirelessly to make your holiday the best chilled out, stress free, revitalizing holiday you have ever had.

Summer makeup tips for the bride to be Summer is a popular time of year for wedding planning. The days are longer, and sunny weather is the perfect backdrop for any outdoor ceremony. But summer heat can also wreak havoc on hair and wedding makeup, causing brides to have to take a few more steps in preparing beauty looks for the big day. What are the best looks for summer brides? “Take your beauty cues from the weather, the best look for a summer bride would be a clean and simple palette—sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer, and creme blush will help beat humidity. Also, candy pink generally looks great on all skin color, hair color, and age ranges, so incor porating those colors into your eye shadow, lipstick, or your bridesmaid’s wedding makeup is an easy way to ensure a great look. What beauty tools will help weather the elements during a summer wedding? What products should a bride keep in her survival makeup kit? “Water proof mascara, face primer (it will keep foundation in place), translucent powder, and rice paper/oil blotting paper are all essential for summer weddings. As for her survival kit, she should keep tissue, breath mints, and lip gloss or lipstick along with the water proof mascara and oil blotting papers.

Any professional advice for brides when testing wedding makeup looks for her big day? “Go for a trial make up application before your wedding day. Be honest about the look you want to create and if the artist doesn’t achieve it go to another makeup artist- it’s your day you shouldn’t be shy about what you want. Also, remember that you still want to look like yourself, only enhanced. So don’t over-apply your makeup. Maybe add fake lashes or do a smoky eye, however not everything has to be bold, trendy, or overdone just because it’s your wedding day. You will have these pictures forever and you don’t want to look back and cringe at your wedding makeup.”

HomeLife Building, buying or renovating your property

Protect your skin when gardening! By Gryphon Adams A hat and gloves help protect against age spots. Naturally protecting your skin from the sun if you garden involves blocking ultraviolet (UV) radiation -- the sun's rays that cause skin photoaging. Photoaging includes wrinkles, lines, texture changes, thinning skin and discoloration. Working outdoors in your garden can increase your risk of skin cancer. Your choice of clothing, hats and sunscreen affect the amount of protection you receive from UV radiation. The time of day you choose for gardening provides a natural method for protecting your skin from sun damage. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to work in the garden. Tightly woven fabrics provide more sun protection than loose-weave fabrics. For example, you can get a sunbur n while wearing gauze, though

97 I CairnsLife

lightweight denim provides more effective protection. Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face, ears and neck. Wear gloves to protect the skin on the backs of your hands. These areas commonly develop liver spots from too much sun damage. And avoid gardening at midday. Garden early in the mor ning or in the late after noon or evening. Work in shady areas of the garden when you can. Wear a watch when you garden and keep track of the time. Even overcast days add to your UV exposure and the potential for skin damage. You can garden longer in the early mor ning or early evening when there's less radiation. For example, limit your gardening hours to before 10 AM and after 4 PM. Happy gardening this summer.

Jo and Ivan Gomizel The Marble & Granite Fitters Cair ns

When Ivan and Jo Gomizel moved to Cairns close to eight years ago, it was to escape the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. They left behind a successful concrete-cutting business to forge a new life and, as it turns out, a new career. “We came up here with our two children for a change of lifestyle. The business opportunity presented itself in stonemasonry,” Ivan chuckles. “And here we are.” Jo and Ivan, who are both experienced in developing businesses, teamed up with key players in the construction area, and within a short time, The Marble & Granite Fitters Cairns were winning major jobs such as outfitting two of the high-profile Trilogy Towers. “Moving up here was the best decision we ever made,” Jo says passionately. Her strong work ethic and positive approach to life saw her take out the AIM (Australian Institute of Management)

finalist Owner of the Year award in 2007 - just 18 months after the business opened its doors. Jo and Ivan are strong supporters of networking events, organisations and the local community and have held various leadership roles between them. They are also committed to the region’s young people. Their current fourth-year apprentice is the fourth they have trained via Queensland Apprenticeship Services. “Stonemasonry is a qualified trade with a four-year apprenticeship. It’s quite special to us that we have trained these guys. We’re quite humbled that we’ve been able to do so in such a short time,” Jo says.

Apprenticing at The Marble & Granite Fitters Cairns is not an easy ride. While all Jo and Ivan’s staff become part of their extended family, the young people who come to them to learn a trade are put through their paces. “There are plenty of big companies out there with big machines – you just push a button and call yourself a stone mason even though you haven’t created anything. We do have high-tech machinery but we are about developing skills, learning how to do everything by hand, so the guys can work anywhere whether Cairns or Cook Town,” Jo says. The fir m provides high quality finishes in granite, marble and

reconstituted/engineered stone for just about any residential or commercial application you can think of. It’s a specialist business requiring specialist skills and, it could be said, a special partnership to make it work. “We have a ripper little company,” Ivan says. “Cairns has been very good to us and we believe in looking after North Queenslanders. A lot of people come up here, make their money and then head off when their kids leave home. That’s not us. We are definitely here to stay.”

Spring Clean Spring is here and while there may have been a tendency to hoard and hold onto items in the winter, there is no better time than the present to schedule a cleansing Spring Clean! We’re now in school holidays so get the whole family involved. Many hands make light work! Clutter is a common problem for many of us. The longer you live in a house, the more things you acquire and the harder it becomes to find places for new things to go. Clutter is low, stagnant and confusing energ y that can have a draining effect on you. It’s no wonder your home may seem in a confused or disordered state. Start by opening all windows to aerate the space. Wear something comfortable and practical. Turn the music on and tur n it up! Designate a space where you will place two piles; one to sell and one to throw. A large amount of in-house clutter is composed of things you either do not need or

by Ingrid White

do not use anymore. Be brave and be honest. If it has no specific pur pose or sentimental value, it has to go. Work your way through each room of the house, have the children doing tasks that are age appropriate and instill some positive reinforcement when you see the two piles g rowing. Be sure to org anise as you go and give the area a thorough clean. Have a garage sale or make use of the many websites out there to sell your pre-loved items. Take the opportunity to make some extra cash before Christmas. Whatever doesn’t sell, donate to a secondhand store and have the children involved in the gift of giving. Finally, have a reward planned for the night. Take the family out for dinner or if you’re all too tired from the hard work, stay in with take away and a dvd. However you choose to celebrate your spring clean, you can bask in the knowledge of a job well done!

Lisa Costa & Omni Corp By Kate van Eck Although they say never to combine business with pleasure, Trevor Bostock and Lisa Costa wouldn’t have it any other way. As owner s of O mni Builde r s and O mn i P ro p e r ty res pectively, they have a s h are d p as s i o n fo r business and are happy to “talk shop” both at home and at the of fice. Despite only recently establishing Omni Cor p – a mother company to the two businesses, the pair are constantly on the search for new ideas and opportunities. In fact, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it come s to the dive r s e p o r tfo l i o o f i n te re s ts they look forward to creating into investments. After an extensive backg round in the mining and construction industries, Trevor established Omni Builder s in 2009. The following year he met Lisa who had just retur ned from working in London and was looking to develop a property in City View. After being recommended to Trevor by a friend she says she was instantly impressed with his “can-do” attitude and g reat sense of humour. “I like the way Trevor thinks. He has no trouble going outside his comfort zone to lear n something new.” What started as friendship developed into more when Lisa began working at Omni Builders in 2011. After also realising how compatible they were business-wise the two decided to join forces, with Lisa establishing Omni Property in 2012. ”Lisa is incredibly competent,” Trevor says. “She’s extremely business minded and we soon saw an opportunity to develop something together.” Although run independently, the two businesses share an of fice and complement each other – much like Trevor and Lisa. As owner of Omni Builder s, Trevor offers clients a range of services from new builds right through to small repair s. In a short amount of time he has developed a solid reputation in renovations including patios and bathrooms, and provides a professional, cost-ef fective service. As a sales and property management business, Omni Property utilises Lisa’s backg round in buying, selling and developing property. They of fer free rental and property valuations with an option to have your property management done on a “pay-per-service” basis, saving clients a substantial amount of money. Interestingly, both Trevor and Lisa have defied the

odds by setting up while a lot of other businesses were closing down. “It’s about looking for the positive rather than the negative and recognising opportunities,” Trevor says. Lisa also points out that they are fortunate to have a positive, energetic team. “Without the people we have helping us we couldn’t achieve half of what we do.” Both say that the key to making their partnership work is a shared vision, a similar work ethic and a g reat sense of “play” with the ability to laugh a lot together. “Between us there’s a really good collective brain and an amazing energ y,” Lisa says. Although their work is essentially their hobby, both Lisa and Trevor enjoy a number of outdoor pur suits including sailing. When asked how they manage working and living together, Lisa admits it can be consuming. “The atmosphere in the of fice is electric. The phone rings constantly and we often go home and talk about it all again there,” she says. Trevor then laughs, “Sometimes I do feel the urge to sit on a high mountain somewhere and have a minute to myself.” 105 I CairnsLife

Fire and Ice We live in the most beautiful part of Australia with a humid tropical climate which is most suitable for growing two wonderful exotic plants, the pepper vine and the vanilla orchid. Even a novice gardener can grow both plants relatively easily and with a little advice from the nursery, actually harvest their own pepper and vanilla beans. The pepper vine (Piper nigrum) can be grown on a protected patio or balcony in a pot or in a filtered light position in the garden. The vine prefers moist soil with good drainage. It fruits readily all year round but needs to be kept pruned to promote fruiting and feed with fertilizer regularly. The fire of the pepper comes from the seeds with green pepper merely immature berries picked when they can be crushed between your fingers. When more mature green to yellow berries are picked and dried, the skin becomes black, hence black pepper. Consider also the native pepper (Piper sar mentosa) as a pepper substitute where the leaves are also used for steaming food parcels, curries and stir fries

adding peppery flavours to dishes. The vanilla orchid has the growing habit of a vine preferring a filtered light position in the garden with free draining soil or even in a pot or hanging basket. Growth habit should be kept within reach otherwise hand inoculation of the flowers is impossible if the vine gets out of control. It is in fact the seed pod of the vanilla orchid once dried and cured that exudes those beautiful flavours. The plants mentioned are propagated at Limberlost Nursery.

Understanding and using technology to its full potential in the social stratosphere is relatively unheard of in the building industry, but for local builder Allaro Homes, who this month launch their new online Design Suite it is an important tool along the home building jour ney.

The Allaro Homes’ Design Suite is free and made up of four components. These are the Allaro Pin Board, Portfolio, Check List and 3D Rendering Software. Allaro Homes managing director Wayne Cavallaro says the Design Suite offers online users an exciting and interactive forum to collect and share ideas for their new home – and best of all anyone can use it. “Whether you are planning to build, one day dreaming of building or currently underway with your build, this Design Suite is a great tool,” he said. The Allaro Pin Board allows users to gather and sort their home inspirations in a secure

online environment. Pins may have been captured in store with their iPhone or online and can be shared with friends through social media with a simple click. The Portfolio features an array of Allaro Homes’ designs compiled in an easy to use e-book. Users are able to view and zoom layouts, email, print and pin any designs they like to their Allaro Pin Board. The Check List for ms part of a design brief and has been created to ensure your cost estimates are well considered across all aspects of design and build requirements. This online questionnaire will capture the size of the home, how many rooms

and what the land size and location is. This check list can be completed in just a few minutes using an online for m. The fourth component of the Design Suite is the 3D Rendering. “This is an advanced, yet simple to use tool that will allow people to have a little bit of fun, designing a new home and see it come to life in 3D,” Wayne adds. The Allaro Homes’ Design Suite offers an exciting, easy to use suite of applications that are not only fun but highly functional. This new service from the team at Allaro Homes is free and can be accessed at www.allarohomes.com.au.

The Queensland Gover nment has announced changes to the first home owner’s grant taking effect from September 2012. Under the new First Home Owners Construction Grant (FHOCG) people who build their first home will receive $15,000 in lieu of the for mer $7,000 which is great news for the building industry and first home builders. The grant is for first home seekers who are a building a new home up to a combined House and Land total of $750,000. Right now there are some great building prices on starter homes in the Cair ns region.

We are currently at the bottom of the building cycle in Cair ns so this is a good time to get moving on that building project as soon as possible. Suppliers pricing has been held steady for some time and due to the abundant supply of land in Cair ns several developers are ready to negotiate. This is helping some builders and developers to offer discounts and incentives which means that the total saving could be much more. These are just a couple of reasons why Cair ns has the cheapest house and land packages that has been seen for some years and they may never be this low again!! While you are doing your homework on building prices make sure that you know exactly what you are getting for your money. The builder’s price should be up front with exactly what it

includes so there are no hidden extras for you. If you are on a strict budget for your first home then it is extremely important to make sure you don’t fall short on your finances or over commit yourself. It’s a good idea to make up a checklist of what will be included and then you can compare prices. Things like preliminary fees, site supervision, ter mite treatment, water tank system, suitable site works preparation, even quality floor coverings and fittings. As they say…. make sure you are looking at ‘apples for apples’ and that’s not an easy thing to do when you are starting out. Don’t be afraid to ask the builder questions about what’s included in your price, as some things are very important and most reputable builders will include these items. If they are reluctant to

The evolution of Fibreglass Swimming Pools There is nothing quite like the experience of relaxing close to a body of water. A well-designed entertaining area centred on a swimming pool can change the way you spend your time at home. When considering a pool, you will quickly find that the many choices are overwhelming. Your choices are Vinyl, Fibreglass, Concrete or a Natural Swimming Pools. Now let us simplify things and dispel some of the myths surrounding fibreglass pools. Over 75 years ago people began building swimming pools out of concrete. However, in the mid1950's fibreglass was introduced to the pool industry and a quiet revolution began. Fibreglass pools are not for everyone due to some of their size and shape limitations, but the fact that they are exploding in popularity in Australia, one must ask why? Here are some answers: Less maintenance: With slick nonstick gel coat surfaces, today’s

fibreglass pools create a unique look that no other pool offers with the benefits of a non-porous surface. Forget the paradigm that ‘pools are a lot of work’: fibreglass pools are very easy to take care of. Most owners spend less than 30 minutes a week in total maintenance. Works great with minerals or salt: Pool salt or minerals are very compatible with the surface of a fibreglass pool. Less cost: Fibreglass and concrete pools may cost the same initially, but long term due to chemical and maintenance differences, a fibreglass pool costs less. Quicker install: Fibreglass pools are often installed within days, fully completed in 1-2 weeks including surrounding landscaping. Less stress for homeowners, neighbours, pets etc. The Green Advantage: Anything that uses fewer chemicals is a good thing. As the shell surface does not react with the water,

fibreglass pools usually need less chemicals to maintain a good water balance. Sound structure, built to last: No matter what your soil conditions are, fibreglass is incredibly strong, yet flexible enough to deal with the constant elements over the years. This means they will not crack when installed correctly. Modern shells come with up to 25 years structural warranty. Much easier on the feet: Kids can play in a fibreglass pool for hours without getting their feet affected by a rough surface. The surface of a fibreglass pool is satin smooth and non-abrasive. More appealing to potential home buyers: The real estate market has become very attracted to the low maintenance and longevity benefits of a fibreglass pool. Potential home buyers see them as a lot less expense and work in the future. Much harder for algae to grow: Algae is the drama of a pool

owner’s existence. As fibreglass composite is an inert material, will not affect water chemistry and prohibits algae penetration due to the non-porous surface. Steps, safety-ledges and seating are included: These days, every fibreglass pool includes built-in steps, safety-ledges and benches, a popular feature that always costs more with other types of pools. There isn’t a perfect pool out there. They all have their drawbacks. Fibreglass is limited in its shapes and sizes. Concrete might be higher in maintenance, chemicals and long-ter m costs. Despite their drawbacks though, owning a swimming pool is an amazing experience, especially with the technology advancements of the 21st century making the process of ownership such a more pleasant one. Fibreglass pools are definitely shaking up the pool market. by Amanda Spelta
