It seems like only yesterday we were welcoming in a new year and now we’re on the eve of a new financial one. And in much the same way we approach the calendar variety, many of us are now taking time to reflect and make changes – a resolution of sorts!

JOHN BENCK Patio World

By: Kate van Eck

After 20 years in business, Patio World has become a household name in the North. Now employing over 50 people across four branches, they’re consistently at the forefront of any developments in the industry. And according to Managing Director John Benck, the company was built on a combination of solid building practices, sound business principles and an infectious advertising campaign spanning the life of the business. Originally from Perth, John spent a number of years working in the Sales and Marketing industry of Adelaide before taking on a new opportunity in Mackay. “A client asked me to go there for a 12 month stint which ended in me buying the Cairns branch of their business,” he says. After renaming it Patio World in 1993, the business soon grew from strength to strength. “Initially it was just a small operation with me doing the selling, my wife handling the office and my son as the installer,” John says. “Within three months we were overrun.” As a result of this sudden demand, they opened a Mackay branch two years later, followed by Rockhampton, Townsville and Darwin five years ago. At this time they also took on a master franchise for Apollo Roofing, which lead to them manufacturing their own material and in turn investing in real estate including their showroom and factory in Cannon Street Cairns. “We are now the only fully integrated manufacturing patio company in the North,” says John. “And the only company Australia-wide that has every product they make engineered for the North.” Throughout their operation, Patio World has successfully weathered tough economic times. While the recent GFC resulted in the temporary closure of their Rockhampton branch, they now have plans to reopen it within the next twelve months. “Over the period of 20 years, every time the building industry has started to prosper something has happened externally beyond normal control – such as SARS, the Asian meltdown and the Iraqi wars – that have taken the cream out of the industry,” John says. “We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for having a good crew and sound planning.” Renowned for their research and technology, Patio World has introduced a number of cutting-edge products over the years including aluminium lattice, balustrades, shutters and sunset screens. As a result of these products becoming widely accepted in the industry, they’ve also recently introduced aluminium decking. “There’s no maintenance, no termite problems and it’s completely water-proof,” John says. “And we’ve already had a spectacular acceptance in the marketplace.” A perfect example of their craftsmanship is their new Townsville premises that incorporates all their products and serves as powerful advertisement for the work they do. Overall John believes the company’s success comes from the quality of their products and their attention to detail. “My son Justin said from the very beginning: if we’re going to build things we’re going to build them right, and we’ve stuck to that principle.” So it’s no surprise that after Cyclone Larry, the Insurance Council of Australia contacted them to ask why there weren’t any claims on any of the jobs they’d done. “We do it once and we do it right,” John says. “While we may give a ten year guarantee on our jobs – our clients are clients for life.”

Like many business ventures, Century Cranes was born out of necessity- but it’s due to the forward thinking of a business savvy local family that it has become the largest and most successful crane hire company in the Far North.

Upstanding

MAN

The Hon. Warren Entsch MP

Federal Member For Leichhardt I Chief Opposition Whip

Warren Entsch has a strong and influential voice in the local community, both as a born and bred Far North Queenslander and as the long-standing Federal Member for Leichhardt. He has had a diverse career history but it was through his involvement in commercial crocodile and cattle properties that he saw the value in having “a seat at the table when decisions are being made.” Warren was first elected to Parliament in 1996, driven to stand by the notion that “if you want to make changes, you have to change the government”. Over the years, it’s clear that by having that seat at the table he has been able to push for a broad range of new initiatives in the Far North, not just through government investment but through his influence in getting the right people together. “A local member is more than somebody who just goes out looking for a dollar he can spend on something”, says Warren. “I’ve been successful each time I’ve stood for Leichhardt because the community puts their trust in me that I will listen, get outcomes, and represent them when decisions are being made in the national parliament.” Warren is determined to do everything he – and the Coalition – can to ensure that Far North Queensland pulls through this challenging economic time and prospers in the years ahead. “The amount of red and green tape is horrific and the cost of compliance has driven small businesses to the wall,” he explains. “We need to work on realistic commercial principles, not on bureaucratic principles - then a lot more businesses will prosper.” He works – publicly and privately – on initiatives to support and rejuvenate the regional economy. He is a key player in the drive to establish Cairns as a tropical campus of the Australian Institute of Sport, encouraging more people to visit FNQ during tourism’s traditionally quieter months and has long pushed for investment in infrastructure that will revitalise Port Douglas. “People say that that we have to diversify and get away from tourism, but I disagree – I think we need to put policies in place that will make tourism businesses more profitable and less seasonal”, he says. Given the crisis that is facing our cattle industry, Warren has started lobbying for a proportion of our foreign aid budget to be provided as goods, as an alternative to cash. This could address breeding herd shortages in PNG – the largest recipient of Australian aid – and promote the reopening of meat processing plants in Northern Australia. He is also a firm supporter of plans to dredge Trinity Inlet and expand the HMAS Cairns navy base, increasing capacity for visiting ships and personnel, and is committed to rejecting the lockout mentality promoted by the Labor government through the proposed blanket World Heritage Listing of Cape York and the Coral Sea Marine Park. There’s no denying that Warren has earned respect around the electorate and in Canberra but he credits much of his longevity and community support to his team, split

26

between Cairns, Thursday Island and Parliament House. “A lot of my success is due to the dedication of my staff and their capacity to go the extra mile”, he says. Finally, he wants to assure small business that he understands the issues and challenges they are facing. “Hang in there if you can. If we want to see a change in attitude, we need to see a change in government. I can assure you that we have heard the problems - now it’s a matter of getting in there and addressing them.”

BUSINESS PROFILE

Welcome to La Nece Anti Ageing Clinique. La Nece is Denise’s new business and is named after her and her new hubby, Lance (he’s new because they just got married in December).

From Left to right: Lance Seccombe, Denise Wolf, Dr Russell d’Scarlett & Dorit d’Scarlett

So in between holy matrimony and a honeymoon an enterprise was born. Denise says she “survived website design, even liked Facebook and set home up as a treatment room” with a 180 degree view of the Coral Sea and Double and Haycock Islands that guarantees softening of any client’s crow’s feet. And along with some essential word of mouth, business is buzzing after opening just weeks ago. The delightfully personable Denise says, “La Nece is all about the cosmetic world of anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers and must be done with skilful precision and integrity. I work alongside Dr Russell d’Scarlett who’s the consultant for administering our injectables”. Dr d’Scarlett did his initial cosmetic injectable training in the USA in 2007 in both Las Vegas and Chicago with further training in Sydney, Melbourne, and right here in Cairns. He now consults in internal anti-ageing medicine in Edge Hill. The bicycling, kayaking, Palm Cove local previously trained as a beauty therapist but always wanted to do more. “Dad had open-heart surgery at 61 and I saw the difference the medical staff made to his life and knew I wanted to do just that”. At 35 Denise went back to uni, JCU in fact, and became a registered nurse. “I had a brain for it and with both my parents from the health industry it came natural to me”. Denise was even asked to fast track her studies because of her excellent grades and completed her three year degree in two and a half. Denise absorbed herself in her new field as a surgical nurse at Cairns Base but frown line-free opportunities kept knocking and the cosmetic

27

industry is where she forged her reputation without the rigid, cosmeceutical flawlessness that can often overshadow any trace of personality or even a raised eyebrow. “Firstly, I look normal”, says Denise even with her own forehead fix just days before. “I’m not about creating fish lips. What sets me apart is my ability to really listen to what people want and make that happen in the most naturally appealing way. It’s about looking fresher not plastic and that’s a skill I’ve perfected”. But why can’t we just age, gracefully or not? “We can”, assures Denise. “However, for many people ageing erodes their self-confidence and that’s something I can help give back”. Denise’s personal approach to anti-ageing though is surprisingly simple. “I do almost bugger all. I eat well, get a good sleep, stick my bum on a paddly and get a bit of sun on me because it’s good for you and have a cackle once in a while. I also use a minimal amount of injectables, just enough to freshen up, so I practice what I preach. I’m proud of my laugh lines. I’ve earned them. I just don’t want too many”.

Kendall

Mills

Serenity at the Avenue By: Kate van Eck

After opening its doors in 1999, Serenity at the Avenue has become a prominent part of the Edge Hill landscape. Offering clients the latest developments in spa treatments and skincare, the salon has weathered the economic downturn to emerge as one of the most recognizable beauty businesses in Cairns today. And according to current owner Kendall Mills, the salon’s success has just as much to do with its relaxed, inviting atmosphere as it does with the high quality products and services they provide.

Originally entering the beauty industry while living in Brisbane, Kendall relocated to Cairns nine years ago to be closer to family. After taking on the manager’s position at Serenity at the Avenue soon after, she clearly hasn’t looked back. “The owners left me more or less running it as my own during that time,” she says. “So when the opportunity came up to purchase the business seven years ago it made perfect sense.” Now operating with a staff of eight, Kendall has continued the business’s success and is committed to providing clients with the best treatments currently on the market. Positioned in an up-market location on the corner of Pease and Woodward Streets Edge Hill, Serenity at the Avenue offers clients a safe, relaxing haven from the pressures of everyday life. With a full range of beauty services including massage, facials, waxing and even eyelash extensions, the salon also offers leading edge skincare products from renowned international brands including Dermalogica and A.S.A.P. Kendall and her team are now also excited to offer IPL treatments for permanent hair reduction and photo rejuvenation. “We only introduced IPL recently but have already had a great response from clients,” she says. Operating in stylish yet tranquil surroundings, Kendall believes the success of the business is due to the attentiveness of her staff and their willingness to cater to a client’s every need. “I’m fortunate to have a team of long-term staff who are just as passionate about what they do as I am,” she says. “We are always open extended hours to allow clients to fit appointments into their busy schedule.” She is also a firm believer in staff training and keeping abreast of current developments in the industry, which involves attending conferences both in Australia and overseas. Kendall describes the whole Serenity at the Avenue experience as not only physical, but emotional and spiritual as well. On top of the products and services they provide, she and her staff also offer a safe haven for clients to unburden themselves. ‘Clients often use us as a sounding board and are usually encouraged to find their situation is not unusual,” she says. Overall, Kendall believes that taking that extra time with her clients is all part of the service and paramount to ensuring they leave in a more relaxed and happy state. In terms of longevity, she says the secret to staying in business comes down to having a genuine love and appreciation for your work. “If you love what you do you will be successful,” she says.

Locals

UNITE Words Josie Rose

By adopting a positive outlook and reinvesting in our local community we can ensure that Cairns survives We’ve all noticed the increasing number of ‘For Sale’ and ‘For Lease’ signs in vacant shop fronts and office premises, but if you think that the closure of these numerous businesses doesn’t affect you, think again. We are all affected either directly or indirectly by Cairns’ floundering economy, and the time to stand up, take notice and take action, is now. Peter Rogers, owner of Pro Hair Cairns, is passionate about our community. Born in Far North Queensland and having been in business for over 30 years, Peter has experienced his fair share of struggles and successes. “I remember when Cairns was booming in the mid 80’s, but over the last few years I’ve seen numerous businesses closedown and have watched many friends and colleagues relocated in search of work.” The Far North’s jobless rate is again the highest in Australia after the number of unemployed people in the region rose nearly 3 per cent in May. Official data shows the region’s unemployment figure has risen to 10.8 per cent, more than double the national average, and job opportunities are limited. Compounding this problem is the online shopping trend. People are turning to the internet for a quick purchase and assumedly, a bargainbut what is this really costing Cairns? “We need to reinvest in our community”, says Peter. “They say, for every dollar we spend, it circulates in the local community 7 times before leaving.” Spending

money locally ensures that that money is spent locally- resulting in increased employment and, eventually, a healthier economy. Peter urges locals to utilise local businesses and resources whenever possible. “Ask for a quote from a local business or supplier. You might be surprised to find they are willing and able to price-match or even beat a price. It costs nothing to ask.” Local businesses are more desperate than ever to attract our local dollar but competing with the national chains that employ extensive marketing campaigns and sales tactics is becoming increasingly challenging. Peter urges local businesses not to give up. “If you don’t make noise, you don’t get heard.” The cost of living in Cairns has increased dramatically and many businesses are struggling to afford rent. “I’d like to see the Government stop increasing prices or we’ll end up with an American scenario where people are standing on the streets with their kids with nowhere to live.” Despite his business being partly destroyed by a fire 12 months ago, Peter has remained positive and urges others to remain positive also. With plans to sell his existing warehouse and build a new purpose-built warehouse and education studio, Peter is optimistic about the future and reminds Cairns that Pro Hair is a proud locally owned and operated business. “We support local business and give back to the community whenever possible. We’re here to be competitive in the hair, nail and beauty industry,

so if you can get a better price elsewhere, tell us.” So next time you spend money, think, where is my dollar actually going? We all play a vital role in the well-being of Cairns and hold its future in our hands. Don’t sit idly by and watch our beautiful city crumble. Please, be proactive, be persistent and remain loyal to fellow locals. PALEO

Is it all it’s cracked up to be? by healthmanagementcairns

I was sitting in my favourite coffee shop on the weekend and I heard a lady explain the reasons why she was following the paleo diet. Using my better judgement, I decided to keep my mouth shut but it got me thinking, there is so much misconception out there, how do we decipher between the good and the bad? Well I figure as dietitians we have an obligation to dispel these myths. So here it goes! I can hear you screaming- not another new diet! Well actually it’s kinda old news (10,000 years in fact). But since it was given a new lease of life in 2010, it has been all the rage within social media and bloggers alike. The paleo diet is based on foods that our ancestors ate such as meat, fish, root vegetables, leaves and fruit. Sounds great doesn’t it? But imagine never being able to eat or drink dairy foods, grains, cereals or legumes, pretty tough huh! Well, check out this amazing ‘TED TALK’ explaining why the neanderthals didn’t eat like we think they did - http://tedxtalks.ted.com/video/Debunkingthe-Paleo-Diet-Christ In saying that, the paleo diet has some fantastic concepts, as do some other alternative ‘fad’ diets. Did a dietitian just say some fad diets have some fantastic concepts? The truth of the matter is if a diet promotes more fresh fruits and free vegetables and less junk food, then it has to be great, right? Of course it is. But (there is always a ‘but’ I hear you say) like everything we have to pick the good from the bad. So here it goes!

Pro paleo • Reduces junk food by cutting out added sugar and bad fats, which can make you feel flat • Prioritises fruit and veggies • Incorporates good fats (nuts, avocado and olive oil) which are great for heart health • Flexibility – some paleo plans allow ‘free meals’ in your week

Anti paleo • Meatalicious – based on far too much meat! This can increase our risk of certain cancers, not to mention the cost of all that meat coming out of our back pockets. • Bans whole grains- studies suggest that whole grains reduce the risk of early death and chronic diseases by 20-30% • Portions unlimited- Even when it comes to healthy foods, there is too much of a good thing! • Forget it if your a ‘vego’, the paleo diet is definitely not for you • No dairy. Although we can get calcium from other sources, dairy is the richest and best source • Low carbs – For those sport conscious people, a low carb diet may mean that you are not giving yourself enough fuel.

Hair Offering an alternative to the more health conscious women who does not want to sacrifice her health for her HAIR

3

Ok, so you want to know if this, ‘paleo diet’ is the real deal? Well, with a few changes it might just be. 1. Add in some low fat dairy 2. Only a small amount of lean meat 3. Add in breads, grains and cereals for fuel

Dr. Rachelle

Haikings Cairns Private Hospital By: Kate van Eck

With a 62-year history in the region, Cairns Private Hospital offers the highest standard of accommodation, advanced medical equipment and patient care. Also committed to providing a choice of reputable health care professionals, they are excited to welcome gastroenterologist Dr. Rachelle Haikings to the team. Now in honour of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, Rachelle hopes to heighten awareness of one of our country’s most common yet easily identifiable diseases.

Originally from Rockhampton, Rachelle moved to Brisbane to undertake study through the University of Queensland. “I really enjoyed science at school and I always wanted to work with people, so after completing a science degree I decided to pursue a medical career,” she says. It was then during her training at a liver transplant hospital that she decided to specialize in gastroenterology. “I had some very strong female role models and mentors within the field and had many inspiring experiences during that time. When you are dealing with very sick patients you build a rapport not only with them but also with their families.” After training in Cairns in 2010, Rachelle made connections with other local specialists including Dr. Bernard Chin, which eventuated in her relocating here in April this year. As the first female gastroenterologist in Cairns, she offers a new alternative to patients and the possibility of a reduced waiting time. “I’d worked with Bernard previously and knew there was a need for another gastroenterologist,” Rachelle says. “And I also saw it as an opportunity for us as a family to join a great community.” As a new mum to a 7-month old baby, Rachelle says she is fortunate to have the support of her husband when it comes to pursuing her career. “If it weren’t for him I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.” With June the official month for Bowel Cancer Awareness, Rachelle says it’s important to remind people just how vital early detection is. “The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program provides a non-invasive test for people over the age of 50 years without bowel symptoms. There is minimal risk to the patient, with a good detection rate.” Available from general practitioners, the kits are also mailed to residents aged 50, 55, 60 and 65. “We have one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world but if we pick it up early the outcomes are very good,” she says. Now thanks to some recent improvements, Cairns Private Hospital is in an even better position to offer Rachelle’s patients the attention they need. “They’ve recently upgraded their endoscopy suite and equipment which certainly has advantages for patients in terms of the quality of their care,” she says. Overall Rachelle is passionate about her work and says she couldn’t imagine doing anything else. ”When a patient is unwell, you are invited into a personal part of their life,” she says. “It is something to be valued when you can help them and their family through this difficult time.”

Law

By: Kate van Eck

MaCDonnells As part of the Cairns’ community since 1884, MacDonnells Law is one of the most recognizable and well-respected businesses in the region. From humble beginnings it’s grown to become one of the largest independent firms in the state and is in the top five privately owned law firms in Queensland. As a partner since 2004, Susan Thomson says the secret to their longevity is the ability meet the needs of clients and evolve within a dynamic industry.

Originally founded in Cairns by Ernest Millford, the firm was purchased by Adam MacDonnell six years later and went on to become known as MacDonnells Law. Over its 129-year history, the firm has expanded across the state to include substantial offices in Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane. “At one stage in its early history, the firm was known as the ‘Octopus of the North’ due its numerous branch offices around the region,” says Susan. “And that part of the legacy is reflected in our state-wide approach today.” Encompassing a number of areas of law, MacDonnells Law is probably best known traditionally for its business law and services to government. As a specialist in family law and a collaborative lawyer, Susan says the firm offers a portfolio of very personal and discrete services in areas such as wills and estate planning, personal injuries, family law, and employment law. “We each work in particular practice areas,” she says. “And a number of us are accredited specialist lawyers in our particular fields.” While at one time a law firm would service a client for life, Susan says people are becoming increasingly sophisticated. “They may prefer to spread their work over a number of different firms, or seek particular expertise for a specific job,” she says. “We do our best to listen and deliver– and have developed quite a few long-term relationships as a result.” And as far as weathering the economic ups and downs, she says that establishing the right management is essential. “We also believe a positive approach to the future is vital, together with great staff and a clear focus on our clients’ needs.” Committed to supporting the wider community, MacDonnells Law has donated a large portion of their archives to the Queensland Supreme Court Library, in order for that history to be preserved. “The firm is also heavily involved in local events and interest groups,” Susan says. And it appears that their support and recognition also extends to staff. “I was promoted to associate one year after becoming a lawyer, and progressed through to partnership – while colleagues I studied with were struggling to get promotions in their firms,” she says. MacDonnells Law is now enjoying a period of consolidation after surviving two mergers, two office relocations in Brisbane, and a GFC in the past decade. “In Cairns, we are staying in our present location in Grafton Street and are looking forward to an office refit in the near future,” Susan says. In terms of their future success, she says it’s paramount that they adapt to the needs of clients and the community. “We are only as good as the staff that comprise us now, and the last job we did. We are conscious that it is a privilege when people choose to put their businesses and lives in our hands.”

Painting

IS THE BEST THERAPY By Annette James

I developed this beautiful addiction to painting about 10 years ago, stylizing from realism to abstract, bringing vibrant colour and design into the home, taking up the big wall in the lounge or perhaps a frog in the toilet or office. Artworks can compliment a particular decor. My favourite is bringing indoors our tropical flowers and painting them into a contemporary style with black leaves and silver veins. Some of my works showcase the Far North’s unique nature and wildlife to the locals and to our visitors. Some works are printed into gifts or souvenirs -the Birds, Frogs and Koalas are very popular. Have you ever dabbled in art yourself ? Painting has many therapeutic benefits that put you in touch with your inner soul and creativity. I hold 2 day crash course for beginners, suitable for the absolute terrified. The course includes what materials to buy and where to buy them. Plus practical lessons on planning, perspective, drawing, painting and glazing with light and dark to give the 3 D appearance. The Heliconia is the subject which best exercises these basic principles of painting. Casual classes are also available Monday nights and or Friday mornings, they are fun and a great opportunity to make new friends. Classes are held at the Art Gallery Lazarus Street Bungalow, here my artworks are on display and visitors are always welcomed with a cuppa or cold drink. BUSINESS PROFILE

Child’s WORLD Inspired learning for your child’s first years By Josie Rose

Child’s World is exactly as its name describes; a child’s world. The impressive Early Learning Centre is Australia’s largest and is located at 2 Borrowdale Close, Bentley Park, opposite Bentley Park College. The whimsical wonderland boasts an inspired interactive water park, towering giraffe mascots, fairy tale characters, dinosaurs and life-size animal figurines. Despite its playful and innovative decor, Child’s World is renowned and celebrated for its supreme level of dedicated Early Childhood Educators, including Director of Operations, Melanie Clarke. “We play a vital role in the beginning of a child’s journey through education- something we take very seriously”, says Melanie. Melanie has over 20 years’ experience in early learning and is steadfast in providing the highest level of care and education. “We are very proud of the quality of our 60+ Early Childhood educators. They are qualified, experienced and passionate with a genuine desire to be working with children.” With 4 purpose-built centres catering for Nursery to Kindergarten, Child’s World is able to provide for a variety of ages, abilities and requirements. “We provide extracurricular activities such as dance, art and just

recently, the Tooth Fairy even made an appearance.” The captivating centre was established in 2011 by Les and Tania Williams; locals who recognised the need for quality Early Learning facilities in Cairns. “We are really blessed to have their ongoing support because they’re so in tune with what Early Childhood is about and they constantly reinvest back into the centre such as building our swim school, investing in the waterpark and providing us with resources such as iPads’ for our Kindergarten programme.” With capacity for 300 children, the Centre is still currently accepting enrolments. “Please make an appointment to view our wonderful facilities- they have to be seen to be believed.” Child’s World Early Learning Centres has its very own Learn to Swim School located directly opposite Child’s World. “This is a first for the Cairns area and we are proud to be offering this vital life skill to our children. The Learn to Swim School has been accepted by Austswim as a Gold Austswim Recognised Swim Centre and has a registered swimming teacher implementing the program.” Child’s World also offer a government funded Kindergarten programme run by Bachelor qualified teachers. “Our Kindergarten curriculum prepares

children for school by boosting their confidence and furthering development in literacy and numeracy.” With a child’s first 5 years of education now highly noted by the government, Child’s World has been able to bridge the gap between Early Learning and Primary School. Parents wanting to enrol in the Kindergarten programme for 2014 must first enrol in the pre-Kindy programme to secure a place for next year. Child’s World is safe and secure as well as homely and welcoming with natural elements incorporated into play areas. “We are leading the way in the perception of early childhood. It’s no longer just about day care; it’s now about quality education and innovative, playbased learning. We ensure that we are providing the best facilities and educators enabling children the best start in life.”

Great Barrier Reef

MASTERS GAMES The inaugural Great Barrier Reef Masters Games will be held in our beautiful city from 8 – 11 August 2013.

The Games are being organised by Events Management Queensland, part of the Tourism and Events Queensland (Events Group) – the company that delivers the successful biennial Pan Pacific Masters Games and annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon. Participants compete in their own age group with no qualifying standards to enter. The only criterion for entry is a minimum age for each sport, which for the majority is 30 years of age. Event General Manager Cameron Hart said the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games promise the ultimate sporting sojourn for people from interstate and overseas. “Äs we establish the event, it would be fantastic if Cairns locals encouraged family and friends from outside the region to join in the fun by visiting the city in August and competing,” Mr Hart said. “The involvement of people in the local community, whether they are competing or not themselves, will be imperative to the success of the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games in 2013 and beyond. “As too will be support from the local business community through sponsorship. “Several of our entrants have told us they are planning extended stays in Cairns, and that’s a great start as we establish what we are confident will grow to become an economically important and much-anticipated biennial happening for the city. “We’re out to make it an event of which Cairns will be proud,” he said. Entries are open with the Early Bird Fee finishing on Wednesday 12 June. Graham the Jeweller Custom Design and Quality Manufacture to Treasure for Generations

Since he was 15 years old, Graham Manning has had an affinity with jewellery making. While working alongside master craftsman throughout Australia and New Zealand, Graham was able to gain experience in a variety of aspects of his craft. In 1983, Graham returned to Cairns and established his own business: Graham the Jeweller, located on Shields Street. Now approaching its 30th birthday, Graham and his wife Karen have earned their

craftsmanship and customer satisfaction. “Jewellery should last for generations”, he says. After almost 30 years as a steadfast local business, Graham and Karen are not only wellknown but also well-loved and widely respected by the Cairns community. “I’ve made jewellery for some of the grandparents of our clients”, says Graham. “We’ve grown with Cairns. There wasn’t even an international airport here when we first established the business.” Graham the Jeweller is home to a stunning array of leading brands such as Canadian Fire Diamonds, Kagi, Georgini and PW Beck Wedding Ring specialist. They also offer services such as repairs, design, valuations, remodelling and manufacturing and are a member of Showcase Jewellers. Due to their far-reaching reputation and word-of-mouth, Graham and Karen have enjoyed a rewarding and prosperous career and don’t plan on slowing down any time soon. “I can’t see myself ever stopping. I haven’t stopped work in 30 years. It’s all I’ve ever done and I love it”, smiles Graham. “We’re really proud of 30 years of happy customers and the fact that we’re still doing all the work ourselves. We’ve been a part of people’s celebrations and special occasions for a long time and that’s an honour. We have a lot to thank the local community for. We wouldn’t be here without our clients.” Graham’s advice is, “Look after the clients you’ve got and ensure they leave with more than they expected. If people are happy, they’ll come back.” Even after 30 years, the highlight for Graham and Karen is still the reaction they get when they present their clients with a finished, handcrafted piece.

ZEMA ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Cracka Review Match Coonawarra with Cabernet Sauvignon and you can hardly go wrong, so firm is the fit between this classic region and top-drawer variety. For years Zema have been a standout producer and that continues to this day with generous wines that never lose their sense of place. Fragrant herbal, cassis fruit on a amply weighted palate finishing with firm tannins. Roast lamb special.

Winemaker’s Note Appearance: Attractive good medium red colour with a hint of purple. Nose: Dark ripe varietal mulberry, dark cherry and cassis characters with hints of dark chocolate and crushed autumn leaf. Palate: The palate displays bold, dark red berry fruit flavours with a hint of regional mint supported by well integrated oak and persistent tannins contributed to by its 14 months in predominantly French oak hogsheads. The texture is ably supported by an attractive acid level. Food: Rack of lamb, twice cooked duck, beef cheeks.

JAZZGROOVE MOTHERSHIP orchestra Somewhat in the manner of Crocodile Dundee, saxophone player David Theak might sometimes be tempted, when looking at a quartet to exclaim, “That’s not a jazz band – this is a jazz band.” The reason for this is that Mr Theak’s chosen ensemble, the impressively named Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, is more than big enough to take on any number of musical contenders. Formed in Sydney 10 years ago, the Orchestra comprises of 17 core members plus special guests. And the whole shebang is heading to Cairns for one amazing show at Tanks on Friday, June 7, as part of the cultural precinct’s very successful Jazz Up North Series. “The orchestra formed in 2003,” explains Mr Theak, who is a founding member and artistic director of the operation. “It grew out of a music association called the Jazzgroove Association, which decided that it wanted to put together a sort of big band for its Christmas party. We had four rehearsals – with pretty much different personnel each time – and performed at the party. There was something extraordinary about the sound, so we decided to try to keep it going.” Since then the orchestra has gone from strength to strength, staging five national tours, garnering rave reviews and winning a hat load of awards. The current tour boasts two very special guests – David James Argue and Sean Wayland. Brooklyn-based composer David James Argue caused a sensation in jazz circles a little while back when he released an album which brilliantly reimagined the sound of jazz big bands – pushing the classic arrangements of the 50s into a startling Twenty-First Century context. Mr Argue’s usual band is a 18-piece ensemble called Secret Society, so he should feel right at home leading the ranks of the Jazzgroove Mothership. Also joining the orchestra at Tanks will be expatriate Aussie jazz star Sean Wayland, who has been resident in New York for over a decade. As well as on his own albums, Wayland’s compositions have been recorded by the likes of Madeleine Peyroux, Dale Barlow, Elana Stone and Carl Orr. “We’ll be playing sets from both David and Sean,” explains Mr Theak. “We’re really looking forward to performing at Tanks. We played there once before, in 2011 with vocalist Kristin Beradi and it was amazing.” Upon hearing the name of the orchestra, people often wonder whether the words ‘jazzgroove’ and ‘mothership’ are references to the great 1970s funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic. According to Mr Theak the answer is a resounding “sort of ”. “Our music is, of course, primarily influenced by jazz, but elements of other styles, such as rock and funk, also have a role to play,” he says. “So, yes, there is a slight reference to Parliament and the P-Funk sound.” It is a reference which will undoubtedly find a common ground with the orchestra’s likely next collaborator – Miles Davis alumni and sometime funkfusionist Chick Corea. “That’s going to be really exciting,” says Mr Theak. “We’re currently talking with him and the Sydney Opera House to see if we can figure out a deal. Hopefully we’ll be able to make t happen sometime in the next year.” If it comes off, it will be a fitting beginning to the second decade of the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra – an ensemble that started as a party trick and went on to great things. “I never thought it would last 10 years,” laughs Mr Theak. “Now it’s time to see if we can make it another 10!” Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra perform at Tanks Arts Centre as part of the 2013 Jazz Up North series on Friday 7th June. Penne all’ Arrabiata I spent a large portion of the past decade venturing around Italy where I developed a strong enthusiasm for their culture, way of life and its sheer simplicity – they really are the absolute masters of ‘less is more’ and have an incredible talent for taking simple ingredients and turning them into culinary perfection. There is a small café off the tourist strip near Flamino in Rome I used to frequent, serving the most intoxicatingly delicious arrabiata I’ve ever had. I finally plucked up the courage to ask them for the recipe for the sauce and to my surprise they passed it on and this is the same Penne all’ Arrabiata we serve at Bang & Grind (and the only dish I actually make). Arrabiata means ‘Angry ‘ - It’s spicy and strong – if you don’t love garlic and chilli you won’t like this dish… and it certainly won’t like you!! BUSINESS PROFILE

From Flower to F lour Spoons Café & Catering By Josie Rose

For 34 years Tracy Halliday has been creating beautiful flower arrangements for weddings and special occasions. Now she’s looking forward to getting creative with flour of a different kind. After 14 successful years running two floristry businesses in Cairns, Tracy decided she was ready for a new challenge. With former experience and an ongoing passion for the hospitality industry, Tracy seized the opportunity to purchase the renowned Spoons Café located at 4/46 Aplin Street when it became available earlier this year. “If I wasn’t going to become a florist, I had planned to become a chef. I’ve always loved food.” Spoons café was originally established in July 2008 and is officially launching under its new and enthusiastic owner from the 1st of June. Tracy says that she is excitedly awaiting the opportunity to exceed her customers’ expectations. “My goal is to constantly exceed all expectations and consistently serve quality food.” Tracy will be keeping the same popular menu and has retained the original staff and chef. Spoons Café currently serves breakfast and lunch daily. All food is fresh and made to order from fresh, locally sourced produce. Tracy’s future plans include developing the catering side of the business by offering fully-themed in-home catering for small dinner parties of 8-10 people. She also looks forward to incorporating home-made chocolates for bonbonnieres and functions. Tapas’ and BYO are on Tracy’s list of future plans, as well as offering the venue for small, private functions. “I have a lot of inspirational ideas for Spoons Café and Catering and am really looking forward to sprucing up the venue; adding some fresh, modern and vibrant touches.” A dramatic career change such floristry to hospitality takes courage and conviction, and Tracy is proud of herself for finding the confidence to make her dream a reality. “I thought, ‘I can do this’. I’m looking forward to being successful, getting out there and networking.” The main appeal of embarking on a new career path for Tracy was that it presented a whole new challenge. “I tried a sea-change, but that didn’t work for me, so I opted for a business change instead. I suppose what I’m most proud of is that I realised I’m not too old to start again.” Tracy’s advice for struggling business is, “Network, network, network. Don’t just sit in your office and hope that opportunities come to you.” Tracy also recommends, “Be good to your customers and encourage customer feedback. Feedback is vital. If there’s a complaint- fix it.” With a whole new set of challenges and exciting opportunities ahead, Tracy feels nothing but positive about her latest venture. “I think the biggest challenge will be learning to make a cup of coffee because I’ve never drunk coffee in my life! Please call me on 0414 955 160 with any enquiries.”

Andrea

Artist

Mullens

of the month

What is your name? My name is Andrea Mullens. What is your art? My art is singing and performing in a variety of different capacities, including as a DJ and MC. How did your signing career begin? My singing career began as a child. I used to love getting in the car and driving around with my dad, listening to and singing along with all his favourite music. I think he must have heard some natural ability to encourage me the way he did. I started private lessons at age 12 and appeared in shows all throughout school. Then I studied musical theatre at University and began working professionally as soon as I finished. I have since worked on cruise ships, have been a featured singer with symphony orchestras across North America, and toured for 4 years with ABBAMANIA as lead singer. What style do you sing today? My style can best be described as lounge/jazz/soul/easy listening, classics to contemporary, but I also do a range of pop and dance music. The songs I most love to sing are songs with a big vocal range and a bit of soul. I love the variety of singing different styles. What do you love most about your job? I love being able to express myself through music- there’s really nothing like it. It’s an amazing feeling being able to shape and sing a phrase or a melody in such a way that can have an affect on the listener. Music is also my secret to staying young: Doing what you love to do is good for the soul. Who in your industry inspires you the most? It’s difficult to pick one specific artist, although I recently had the best time at the Chris Isaak concert when he came to town! He is a true entertainer in every sense of the word. Still vocally gifted after so many years, a very funny and charismatic front man, and he captured the attention of every person in the room. I am inspired by entertainers with longevity and the kind of charisma that can affect an entire auditorium. Who is the most famous person you have sung alongside or performed for? I had the amazing opportunity to sing for Andrew Lloyd Webber at the London Palladium as part of the finals for a Canadian reality television series. Is Canada where you’re from? Yes, I am originally from Canada but arrived in Cairns 3 years ago, met my wonderful husband Greg (who is also a DJ), and now this is my new home. What advice do you give to aspiring singers? Keep growing and challenging yourself to try new things- new styles and genres, and just keep going. If it’s what you love to do, put your heart into it and never give up. Where can we find you performing? I sing at a variety of top venues between Cairns and Port Douglas. I also perform regularly at corporate events, weddings & private parties and can booked in a variety of different ways- as a solo artist, duo, with a 4-6 piece band all the way up to a 14-piece big band. Best place to find me is on our website: www.cairnspremierentertainment.com.au.

INTERIORS

SELENA MURPHY

Northern Interiors By: Kate van Eck

During its 42 years of business, Northern Interiors has been instrumental in transforming homes and offices in the Tropical North. Its prominent showroom on Anderson Street houses a mix of stylish, classical and modern furnishings – unlike anything else in the region.

Originally from the West, new owner Selena Murphy relocated to Townsville in her 20s where she renovated and redecorated homes. After then moving to Cairns when her children reached school age, she took on a role at Northern Interiors where she’s been ever since. When original owner Deanne expressed a desire to sell the business last year, Selena was more than happy to take on the responsibility. “After Deanne made the decision to step back, it made sense for me to take over because I knew the business back to front and I really enjoy doing it,” says Selena. “We’ve basically reversed our roles and the only real change is I now have to make the major decisions,” she laughs. Apart from an extensive collection of products, the Northern Interiors’ showroom is also home to a factory where they produce their own curtains, soft furnishings and upholstery. “In order to offer an individual look we manufacture to order,” Selena says. “We source from an extensive range of companies and can supply whatever individual item the customer requires.” The team of seven also offers additional services such as colour selection at no extra cost. “All our staff are talented decorators who can assist clients every step of the way,” Selena says. “We all have different decorating styles and can match a particular consultant with the client’s taste.” Specialising in both residential and commercial decorating, Selena and her staff are in no way limited by location – taking on projects both locally and across the country including as far south as Bendigo. “People come to us because they’re looking for that point of difference,” she says. And despite the high quality products and services they provide, she says they’re happy to cater to all budgets. “People perceive us as being expensive but they’re usually surprised when they come into the store and discover we’re actually cheaper than a lot of other suppliers.” Now with a new financial year expected to generate activity, Selena says many people can benefit from a change. And she has certainly lead by example – putting her own stamp on the premises by undertaking an exterior and interior renovation in October last year. Overall, she describes the decorating experience as a journey that often takes a very different direction to where it started and believes her relationship with clients is essential in achieving their ultimate goals. “Once someone becomes a client they usually become a part of the business by dropping in for a chat or to see what’s new in the showroom,” she says. “There’s nothing like the look on someone’s face when they’ve achieved what they set out to do.”

The owners of all three Far North Queensland branches, husband and wife team Trent and Georgina Twomey have continued to build their business despite tough economic times. Combining old-fashioned service with bulk buying power, they are committed to the region and to building long-term relationships with their customers. Born and bred in Cairns, Trent completed his degree at James Cook University and after spending a number of years working in Northern New South Wales, he and Georgina (who is also a pharmacist), returned to Cairns in 2007. As the proud owners of two franchises on Mulgrave Road in Cairns and one in Innisfail, the couple are now responsible for two young children as well as a growing business. “I like the independence and freedom of being in business,” says Trent. “Although you don’t always have a great work/life balance when you work for yourself.” he laughs. With approximately 40 staff between the three locations, Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse offers an extensive range of products and brand names at affordable prices. “Many retailers either position themselves as really big and really cheap, or really small and very expensive with great service,” Trent says, “We believe we can have a great range, great prices and can still provide great service.” Trading seven days a week, from 8am to 8pm weekdays, and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday, Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse is now one of the nation’s fastest growing pharmacy brands. “Building and running the business is very much a team effort,” Trent says. “I couldn’t do this without Georgina, she has the attention to detail I sometimes don’t have.” In addition to the retail arm of the business, their Westcourt branch is also the only pharmacy with a compounding lab north of Townsville. Now operating for three years, the lab caters to some of the more complex medical conditions that can’t be helped with commercially available medication including fertility treatments for IVF, medications for pediatrics, dermatology, anti-aging and hormone replacement therapy for both men and women. “While the business side is great, this is what I actually enjoy most about what we do,” says Trent. “It gets the brain matter working and is the reason why I got into the industry in the first place. This is what makes us a specialist in our field. ” Despite the economic downturn, Trent and Georgina have continued investing in their brand and are confident about the future of Cairns. They are great believers in supporting local organisations, such as Advance Cairns, Relay for Life, The Cairns Show, & The Ride for Isabella, and encourage others to do the same. “The message I’d like to get out is: give us a try – we are local!” Trent says. “Although Cairns is completely different from how it was when I grew up, it still has that small town feel about it and for anyone to be successful you have to be prepared to give back.”

REAL ESTATE

POWE

By Josie Rose

PROPERTY

An innovative boutique team with deep roots in Cairns’ inner city and inner suburbs

When it comes to industry specialists, Powe Property is at the forefront of real estate from Cairns to Townsville. Established in 2008 by Matt Powe, Clint Smith and Kirsty Kernot, Powe Property specialises in residential buying, selling and renting.

The team Powe Property are committed to sharing their knowledge and providing clients with accurate information regarding the property market. Matt and Clint share some valuable advice and tips for a prosperous New Financial Year. Investing “The general rule in real estate is that the best investments are generally the best located properties. Anything close to the CBD is usually a good investment. Many suburbs have up’s and down’s and are only popular at certain times, but the CBD remains very consistent and offers more solid investment opportunities. Suburbs such as Edge Hill and Kanimbla are also good areas to investment in.” Selling “The last 6 months in particular have shown a lot more activity in the market and buyers are becoming more confident. When it comes to selling your home- focus on the aspects in your control, such as the presentation of the property; first impressions are crucial. Have a buyers-eye-view and get a feel for the properties’ street appeal. De-clutter the interior but don’t completely empty it. Quality kitchens and bathrooms are generally features that buyers look for, but before renovating or improving these rooms, prioritise where money is spent. Don’t spend all your money on renovating and nothing on advertising. Ensure that your labour and the cost of resources will be returned in the sale price. Stick to re-painting, tiding up and improvements that will add value.”

Buying “Do your research. Go to open homes. Check the paper on the weekends. Get a good grasp of where the market’s at and what property is worth. Always aim for the most desirable suburb but don’t overstretch. The choice is between location and the property itself. In terms of making money on a property, location is number one.” Renting “Interest rates have just dropped to a 40 or 50 year low so now is a great time to buy. Some clients who have recently taken out a mortgage have worked out that their mortgage repayments are only slightly more than rental costs. The rental market is quite high at the moment whereas property prices are low.” Powe Property pride themselves on the unique culture within their business. “Interaction between us and the public is paramount and we ensure it’s of a very high quality. Transparency is also vital; we’re here to be honest.” Through innovative marketing strategies such as You Tube videos, Powe Property strive to inform and educate in the areas of buying, selling, renting and investing and welcome all enquiries. Matt and Clint advice, “Have faith- it seems like we’re on the road to recovery so this is a good time to be brave and risk a little. There are gradually more people entering the property market as the Cairns property industry is regenerating. We’re still not out of the woods, but we’re certainly following the signs in the right direction.”

FINANCE Specialists in Lending

Scott Smith has worked in the finance industry since 1986. After a successful career with a major Australian bank, he established Cairns Finance 7 years ago which is a Cairnsbased business and personal finance brokerage.

Throughout his career, Scott has dealt with a variety of industries and individual circumstances providing him with extensive knowledge and experience to cater to a variety of personal and business requirements. “The smallest loan I’ve done was $4950 and the largest I looked at was for $100 million”, says Scott. For most of us, the idea of borrowing money is daunting, but with expert advice and guidance it can be beneficial and worthwhile. “Without the help of a finance specialist, selecting a bank or a loan is like shopping in supermarket where all the products are packaged exactly the same. How do you know what the differences are between each product? A finance expert can walk you through the “supermarket” and provide a package that will suit your requirements”, explains Scott. Conveniently located at 21 Lake Street, Cairns Finance caters for owner occupied or investment house purchases, business finance, debt consolidation, car and development finance and can assist with business invoice finance. Scott’s tips to ensure a brighter financial year are, “Budget: understand what’s coming in and what’s going out. Write it down and compare it to previous weeks and months so you can work out whether

you are spending at a sustainable level. The most common mistake people make is not being aware of where their money is going. If you choose to use your financial capacity for lifestyle type expenses and they exceed your income, you’ll create debt.” Scott also encourages, “Review your existing loans: are they still the best type of loans for you and are they still working for you?” Scott believes that it’s a fantastic time to invest or upgrade in the Cairns property market as commercial and residential property prices have been down for some time. “Businesses leasing their premises should look into purchasing their own property, with prices down and interest rates down, affordability is definitely UP!” So if you’re considering investing, building your business or consolidating loans, there a many reasons to trust Cairns Finance which was rated the number 2 commercial brokerage in Australia last year. As a small business owner himself, Scott understands the associated financial challenges and also has a firm understanding of the Cairns community. “I work for the client, not the lender. It’s about listening to the client’s needs and delivering a suitable, high quality loan outcome.”

SALLY

MLIKOTA

CBC Staff Selection By: Kate van Eck

Celebrating their 25th anniversary this month, CBC Staff Selection has been instrumental in the growth of business in Cairns. As the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, owner Sally Mlikota says she is just as passionate about the industry as she was when she started and is always looking for ways to improve the service they provide. And despite the recent economic downturn, she is focused on the future with exiting plans to grow and diversify. Originally from England, Sally moved to Sydney 18 years ago after meeting her Australian husband. With an extensive background in the recruitment industry, she joined the team at CBC Staff Selection when they relocated to Cairns, and now has a 14-year history with the company. “In April 2004 I took over the business,” she says. “The owner was ready for a change and I had a lot of encouragement from my husband that I could do it.” Now with offices in Cairns and Townsville, CBC Staff Selection offers a multi-level service to clients. “While we specialise in permanent and temporary recruitment, we now also arrange HR consulting to clients, and for people who prefer to do most of the recruitment themselves we offer elements such as screen testing or reference checking,” Sally says. The business has also grown to cover all aspects of professional and office administration recruitment with one of the most stable teams in Cairns in terms of longevity and experience. “Our staff are specialists in their fields and we have a database that is 14 years old – giving us a great depth of knowledge.” Always one to lead by example, Sally is a strong believer in supporting her staff through training and education. “For me one of the most important things is to carry on the legacy in terms of identifying people that want to go to the next level, which is important for a local business,” she says. With 80% of staff either currently studying or having completed study in the last 12 months, Sally has established a team of long-term employees that is a unusual for such a high turnover industry. “It’s all about empowering people,” she says. A locally owned business with national and international experience, Sally says CBC Staff Selection has the advantage of not being government by a head office, giving them more flexibility. “I enjoy working closely with business and adding to their recruitment process because I think what hinders a lot of businesses is not having the right people in place.” She also says there are a lot of clients that use them exclusively. “We know their business so well that recruiting has become second nature – we’re just an extended arm of their business.” Despite recent challenges, Sally is optimistic about the future for Cairns. “We are about to diversify into another area of recruitment and will inherit four new staff – it’s an area that has a growing future,” she says. And with a database of high caliber, prescreened and preselected professionals, Sally and her team are in the perfect position to assist local business when it comes to establishing their team. “I think this is the year for change,” she says. “We are already seeing glimmers of hope in certain industries and I’m predicting 2014 is going to be a great year.”

SPARKS

Print and Web Design to be Remembered In the words of Kirrah Sparkes, owner of Bright Sparks, “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.” Everywhere we look, there are businesses vying for attention, so ensuring your brand makes an impression is now more crucial, and more difficult, than ever.

Kirrah Sparkes is certainly an expert when it comes to the art of graphic design. With an Advanced Diploma in Visual Communication from Design College Australia and experience in various fields of her industry including in Cairns, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, Kirrah has the talent, foresight and skill to transform your business into an innovative and comprehensive brand to be noticed - and remembered. This New Financial Year is the ideal time to refresh or overhaul your businesses tired, outdated or ineffective image and replace it with a fresh and effective Bright Sparks design. “Many people will judge your business on its looks. A scruffy or out-ofdate image is likely to make people think the same about your products or services”, explains Kirrah. “Refreshing your brand isn’t just about making your business look good. It’s about making your bottom line look good too. Some simple changes to your image could make a significant improvement to your profitability.” Some key benefits of a brand refresh are that you will gain a competitive advantage in the market place. “A well-designed and well-executed image can reflect your businesses current market dynamics and help you become a leading voice in your industry as well as increase your market share.” An image or logo also works to express your company’s evolution in its industry. “As any small business grows, a rebrand can reflect the larger, more sophisticated company it has become. Businesses

that fail to develop their brand risk becoming overshadowed by their more dynamic competitors.” Kirrah also explains that through smart brand marketing you can reflect advancements in your products or services and communicate your level of quality to your target market and customer base. From the beginning of June Kirrah will be located at 51 Grafton Street; a collaborative space also housing The Hair Studio and Jetty Love fashion label. To ensure your business is a ‘bright spark’ this New Financial Year, call Kirrah on 0402 693 928 for a free, no-obligation consultation and consider the EOFY Brand Refresh package below. AUDI CENTRE CAIRNS

The Audi Experts By Josie Rose

For performance, safety, design and value, Audi remains one of the most desirable brands on the market. Since 2000, Audi Centre Cairns has been displaying an extensive range of new and used Audi’s, and Dealer Principal, Alan Baxter explains why now is such a good time to purchase one of these prestigious European vehicles

“Audi, as a brand, is synonymous with cutting-edge technology. The build quality is at a level aspired to by most other car manufacturers. Audi’s come complete with advanced technology, safety features and a superb build quality”, explains Alan. It is now possible to become an Audi owner with the Audi A1 now starting from only $29,990.00, and if the A1 doesn’t suit you, Audi also offers the ‘Audi Approved Plus’ deal. “Audi Approved Plus is what we offer on all our used Audi’s up to 6 years of age, meaning they have been tested and prepared for sale to meet Audi Germany guidelines, and they come with a 2 year factory warranty which is an extension to a new car warranty.” Audi also have some great EOFY offers. Currently, the A4 range comes with 0.9% interest until the end of June 2013, and the Quattro range, excluding the Q5, comes with free CTP insurance, free registration, free stamp duty and free metallic paint. “There has never previously been an offer as low as 0.9% interest rate (to approved purchasers) by Audi before, so there has never been a better time to buy. And with the strength of the Australian dollar, the cars now have more standard specification than ever, so now the Audi range comes with more features and options at no extra charge.” The $5000 investment allowance for new purchases also makes EOFY an ideal time to buy. The investment allowance ends June 30th and provides an immediate tax deduction for ABN buyers. “Buyers also have the benefits of being able to pre-pay repayments, insurance during June for up to 13 months in advance and reap the tax benefits in this financial year.” When shopping for a new or used car, Alan advises, “Consider all aspects of the deal and look at the brands of cars you aspire to own. Stay true to what you want and follow your heart. Don’t get talked out of your preference by the opinion of others because you can end up confused about your purchase and may end up making the wrong decision.” With so many great deals on Audi, start the New Financial Year with a new set of wheels. Trade-ins of any brand are welcome, so drop into the showroom and see the professional team at Audi Centre Cairns for assistance or a test drive.

HONEY,

I’m taking the kids!

The family holiday demographic is a growing market and many players in the travel industry are increasingly catering to this demand. Whether it is a relaxing beach holiday, a cruise or something further afield and more adventurous, there is an option to suit all ages. With family holidays it is important to consider an experience which has activities that will stimulate, engage and refresh the entire clan. When it comes to family holidays it’s about getting out there and enjoying new things together, a time to bond and have fun. The experience of watching your children see and learn things for the first time is a source of much pride and happiness. Travelling together allows you to really connect with each other in a way that’s not possible in our normal busy lives. Travelling to another country and engaging with the local people can be a life changing cultural experience for many children, and whilst they may enjoy it at the time, they will appreciate it forever. Holidaying in a developing country can be particularly rewarding and a great reminder of just how good we have things here in Australia. Many of the major resort destinations, such as Fiji, Bali, Vanuatu and Thailand have a wide range of family friendly hotels that provide an all in one experience for the whole family. From kids clubs, structured to different age groups, to a plethora of age appropriate daily activities your child’s day will never be dull. They will have the opportunity to mix with other children of their age, from all over the globe, whilst you have the time and freedom to relax by the pool, daiquiri in hand, or pamper your self at the resort Spa. Many of these properties have accommodation, ranging from apartments, to villas that can accommodate the extended family as well. In addition to this, many offer deals, such as kids eat free which can make the whole trip considerable less expensive. The people of Bali and Fiji, in particular, revere children and go to great lengths to cater for their needs. Cruising, the fastest growing travel market in the country, is another great holiday option for families. Families make up about a third of P & O Cruises passengers, and like a large resort, offer the same kinds of facilities and activities to keep the young ones entertained.

Shore excursions at the various ports also provide the opportunity for the entire family to get a glimpse of another country and culture. Cruising is one of the most economical options for the family, with your transport, accommodation, meals and entertainment all included. Cabins can cater for up to 4 people with discounted rates for children. If you are looking for something beyond the beach resorts and theme parks, adventure travel companies such as Intrepid Tours have a wide range of more exotic, off the beaten tourist trail options, to many destinations around the world. Planning a family adventure can be very stressful for a parent. You need to consider such things as safety, transport, food and choosing sightseeing options or activities that the whole family will enjoy. These small adventure companies remove all of that hassle, having experts who have researched the very best of what the various destinations have to offer, blending ‘must see’ highlights, to memorable moments such as home stays in local villages, sleeping under the stars in the desert or tracking elephants in Africa. All of the logistics are taken care of to ensure the trip runs smoothly. They strike a balance between structured activities and fee time, allowing you to decide how much or how little you do. The itineraries are designed to immerse you in the destination with an authentic experience, whilst maximizing your enjoyment and learning, all the while ensuring you have a safe trip. Take an adventure, drag the kids away from the TV and their computers, and allow them to experience and learn about different cultures and ways of life. Learning and exploring in the real world opens eyes and minds in a way the virtual world never can. Wherever you choose to travel this year have fun

Port Douglas has been abuzz with activity. The excitement of the Carnivale is over with great crowds at all events. The Virgin Australia Food Wine and Taste of Port was a stand out event for me, closely followed by the Exemplar Clipper Cup, the comedy night, celebrity chefs, in fact, there was not an event that didn’t live up to every expectation. Perfect weather, great events made for one of the best Carnivale’s yet.

The Carnivale event kicks off a massive few weeks in Port with the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival featuring heavily in Port Douglas a week later with the Coral Coast Triathlon, the RRR Mountain Bike Challenge and the Hekili Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge all finishing on 4 Mile Beach on Sunday the 2nd June. The triathlon has 600 entries alone so the beach will be fitness central. We will have some very fit celebrities in town that weekend with Reidy, Bacon and Whippet from Bondi Rescue mixing it with the athletes and meeting locals when they try their hand at bartending at the after party at the Central Hotel. These activity filled weeks are finalized when the Cairns Airport Ironman event rides down Macrossan St for the turn around in the bike leg. The local drinking holes and cafes are filled with spectators cheering on the competitors. In all, an amazing couple of weeks before the season starts, and something not to be missed next year, put it in your diary now.

SpaQ QT Port Douglas has opened the latest outpost of spaQ , the cutting-edge spa concept that has taken Sydney and the Gold Coast by storm. The facilities at the new spaQ Port Douglas include five spacious treatment rooms, with one dedicated exclusively to couples; a reception and retail area; full-service male and female changing rooms; and a relaxation lounge. The menu features four different massages, a variety of facials and body treatments by USpa, an “Accessories” section with a creative range of 30-minute add-on treatments, organic sunless tanning and four ‘Signature’ packages - including “The Weekend Warrior” and “The Plush Princess.”

features to mirror the vibrant beach-chic personality of Port Douglas. Adding to the relaxation experience, spaQ serves La Gaia teas, including an exclusive spaQ blend, served in quirky, mismatched cups. Snug sheepskin rugs adorn the relaxation lounge chairs and the team is decked out in bright yellow-and-red, bamboo-print uniforms.

Rather than insisting on a pre-selection of treatments, spaQ encourages guests to reserve a block of time and not make a treatment selection until they’ve partnered with a knowledgeable therapist to determine the best treatments for their individual needs.

“The look of the spa is definitely light-hearted and fun—so, it was very important to fill the space with a quality guest experience and to deliver that in a fresh way,” says Naomi Gregory, spaQ Development & Operations. “We played up the designer concept by including an ‘Accessories’ section on the menu and introduced a consultative and personalized approach with the ‘freshly picked’ spa experience.”

JUNGLE ROAD Port Douglas

Janette Walker’s enthusiasm for her fashion business, Jungle Road on Port Douglas’ main Macrossan Street, is infectious, she just loves it and combined with her relentless work ethic she has taken this unique store through the good times and the more recent tough times to what is now its 20th successful year. Jungle Road specializes in Australian fashion labels such as wYse Bodywear , Vigorella and Elliot Kennedy as well as leading international labels like Verge and Animale that all use natural fibres: linen, cotton, hemp, modal, bamboo, soy and silk each with its own particular characteristics and each perfectly suited to the tropics.

Janette believes the secret of her success is working the business herself, having stock on hand so the customers can walk out with they want and offering good quality and exciting styles at value for money prices.

On a wet rainy winter’s day in Melbourne in 1985 after returning from a holiday in Port Douglas Janette and her husband Norm said to themselves “Why are we doing this?” and immediately set about planning to move north. Less than a year later and with an 18 month old baby the Walkers arrived back in Port Douglas at a time when Christopher Skase’s dream was just taking shape and their own great adventure was about to begin.

“We have customers from 25 to 85, an excellent local clientele from Port Douglas and Mossman and a strong following from Cairns where ladies will come up for the day, have lunch and do a bit of shopping because they find the shopping in Port Douglas is a little more boutique than Cairns. They can find things here they can’t find there. We specialize in natural fibres and that makes us special. We are careful not to sell to customers but rather just offer them help. We are all mature and we want them to be happy with their purchases and feel comfortable to come back again.” Janette says.

The Walkers embedded themselves in tourism for the next sixteen years. Janette needed a change and when Jungle Road came up for sale in 2002 she jumped at it and immediately began revitalising the already well established business by adding stock and providing her own special brand of customer service.

Janette has recently taken Jungle Road online creating what she calls “an extra shop” and sees great potential in developing that business at www.jungleroad.com.au.

But when the going gets tough the tough get going as the maxim says and when the GFC hit Janette pulled out all stops to keep her business on top by streamlining her banking, keeping a careful eye on stock and working with her landlord to help her through and now she is happy to say the business is going from strength to strength again.

Hi Joel! Tell us a little about yourself: I spend my days working to ride every afternoon or just enjoying a relaxing day with my girlfriend, I enjoy travelling and love the odd road trip to race or see new places, a positive atmosphere never goes far and good BBQ with all my friends after a Sunday ride. What kind of riding do you do? My main focus is racing downhill mountain bikes, but I also like to mix it up and ride cross country and road bikes, And love riding my jump bike whenever I can. What began your passion for riding? Before a race the best preparation you can do is be as fit as possible and make sure you know the track and all your lines and where to pedal, making sure your bike is ready too is important. What do you find rewarding about the sport? The rewards of the sport is you get a lot of self satisfaction out of it, meeting new people who share the same passion. When you work hard to achieve something and you when get a good result. What advice do you give to young riders? The advice Id give to younger riders is to set goals, and keep working towards them, work hard and put in the hours of dedication. Where is your favourite place to ride in Cairns? Smash Repairs By Josie Rose

From a small shed on Palm Avenue back in 1977 to its current location on Newell Street, Bungalow, Willmot Smash Repairs became, and has remained an industry leader thanks to owner, Allan Willmot. Allan says that his businesses longevity and ongoing success are due to employing quality staff and maintaining a high level of customer service and satisfaction. As well as using industry leading equipment, Allan has put environmental sustainability at the forefront of his business philosophy. “Cairns’ beauty inspired me to operate my business with over and above environmental standards which will also benefit the business financially in the long run”, explains Allan. WSRS uses a waterless car washing system and has recycling initiatives in place from the office to the workshop as well using environmentally friendly paints for staff safety and to reduce environmental impact from the business. Due to Allan’s remarkable approach to business, WSRS has won an array of impressive industry awards such as the National Sustainability Award in 2011 and they obtained the MTAQ Green Stamp, being the highest accredited panel shop in Queensland. “Willmot Smash Repairs use

the best environmentally sustainable practices available to our industry and only the highest technological equipment available to ensure premium results.” WSRS offer various services such as an online claims management system, carry out repairs for all insurance companies, fleet and private work, cater for all makes and models and use the latest technology for small to major crash repairs with fast turnaround time frames. With highly trained staff and the latest technology for chassis straightening, high strength steel testing and a PPG Envirobase Paint System to ensure vehicles are repaired to pre-accident condition; it’s no wonder that WSRS are an industry leader. “Customer satisfaction is, and always has been our priority. In a small city such as Cairns you rely on word-of-mouth for repeat business. We have customers whose children’s children now come to us, so that tells us we’re doing a good job.”

LOCAL NURSERIES VERSUS

BIG BOX STORES

109

There are basically two main retail options for gardeners when purchasing plants for their garden, the local nursery and the ever increasing big box stores including hardware stores and supermarkets. There are five major differences between the two: quality, service, price, variety and atmosphere. Plants growing at nurseries are far healthier, in appearance and vigour and are free from diseases. Reputable nurseries have plants growing in conditions suitable for the plant to thrive. Indoor plants are grown in shady greenhouses with sun loving plants actually growing in sunny spots in the nursery. However big box stores display plants in airconditioned areas, concrete and steel structures, or enclosed shop departments which create a false atmosphere, which stresses the plant causing problems when the plant is exposed to the real world. You get what you pay for! Nurseries offer a package when you purchase a plant. Along with the plant, comes advice on the suitability, planting and pruning procedures, plant health products and any follow up advice needed later on. All this is truly a bargain compared to false savings at stores which only spruik cheapest prices. And not all their plants are cheaper! In nurseries, plants are hand watered, regularly fertilized and correctly pruned, displaying plants in peak condition. Many big box stores are designed for quick in, quick out plants with staff restrictions and training, limiting them to only pricing and

CairnsLife

stacking shelves. Few words of advice and care are possible. Nurseries are able to have a wide variety of plants and can specialize in collections or curiosities, even ordering in unusual plants that are not found in chain stores. Nursery stock is usually climate appropriate whereas big box stores have a national roll out of stock leading to many plants destined to fail in the tropics. Your local nursery is a destination where you can spend quality time enjoying beautiful plants, strolling through well set out gardens with displays to inspire you, friendly staff who are passionate about gardening, water features to listen to while taking the time to smell the flowers. Who wants to grab plants off overcrowded shelves, stack them in the dreaded shopping trolley, and rush them off to the nearest self-serve check out? To me there is no comparison! Enjoy the delights of visiting your local nursery soon.

Building a

NEW HOME

….. where do I start When you’ve made the decision to build a new home its good to know where to start the process. Firstly you should talk to a bank or mortgage broker about how much you will be able to borrow. Ask about a combined loan for house and land rather than 2 single loans. It’s more economical on fees and you only have to pay the interest on what is drawn down on the loan until the home reaches completion and final payment. Your bank or mortgage broker will be able to give further information and walk you through the whole process. Once you’ve established the available $$ budget then look around and what suburb you prefer. This is when you should start talking to your builder. Experienced builders will be able to do a conceptual budget for your new home and that will help determine whether what you want is within financial reach. Do get a few alternatives and be particular that the home design you select will compliment your lifestyle and be the most suitable for your land. Land prices differ from suburb to suburb so this can make a great difference in the total of your house and land package. Some blocks of land will require

more site works and preparation and you may want to include a pool or landscaping in your total budget. Start with the total $$ budget, take off all these other costs and then see what you’ve got left for your new home. If this is your first home start with some of the basics. What is the minimum number of bedrooms, bathrooms and car spaces you really need? Be realistic with your requirements and my advice is don’t overstretch your repayment schedule. Whilst interest rates are low and very attractive right now they will increase over the next few years and so will your repayments. Make sure you still have enough money left over each week to have those few little extras for your lifestyle expenses. If you are upgrading your home your priorities may differ from a first home owner’s priorities. You’ve already worked out what you want and don’t want, so you can be more specific with your requirements. Find a builder who will listen to you and will incorporate those requirements in the design, and

112

CairnsLife

budget, of your new home. Also consider the running costs of your new home such as rates, electricity, gas, gardening, swimming pool etc. The larger the home the more it costs to maintain, so if your moving from a smaller 2 bedroom apartment to a large 4 bedroom home make sure you can budget for increased household costs. Have a chat to some builders who can provide you with some initial ideas, do your research on finance and then its time to get serious about building your new home. Happy building! HOW TO:

WINTER-PROOF YOUR HOUSE

CBWC Networking Luncheons

As the winter chills approach, it’s a good idea to winter-proof your house. This will increase your comfort, save money on heating bills and enhance the energy efficiency of your house. INSULATION The most important step to achieving heating efficiency in your home is through installing insulation. Insulating your walls, ceilings and floor helps keep warmth in the winter and cool in the summer. Of these, insulation your ceiling is by far the easiest, unless you’re building a new house where you have a good access to interior walls and floors. Simply measure your ceiling area, purchase the insulation, then cut and lay. Roof insulation is available in batt, blanket or loose-fill form, made from synthetic mineral fibres, easy to cut and install and comes in a range of sizes. Correct insulation can effectively reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 50%, therefore helping the environment. To guarantee your requirements, consult with a Bunnings’ team member. YOUR HEATER Having efficient and well maintained heating system will reduce costs and increase comfort. Heating different zones at different times will enable you to heat only the rooms you are using rather than heating the whole house. Service all heaters according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Install a timer or programmable thermostat to turn your heater on and off automatically around 20 to 30 minutes before getting up in the morning or getting home in the evening. Close doors to unheated areas, or hang curtains across open archways leading to other rooms. DRAUGHT-PROOF YOUR HOME In winter, your heating costs can increase by up to 25% because of draughts. At the end of summer check doors and windows for draughts. Seal them with weather stripping along with external doors, vents, unused chimneys, fireplaces and air conditioning unit. You can choose from a wide range of draught- proofing products such as weather strips and window and glass silicon. THE LITTLE THINGS Below are the few “little things” you can do that will winter-proof your house, reduce costs and wasting heat. • Install an efficient hot water system and fittings. • Use heavy drapes in front of windows to retain heat. • Maximise north facing windows to allow winter sun to heat the home.

The CBWC networking luncheons have been crafted to ensure that you have “serious fun, while doing serious business”. Ticket includes: • Welcome drink at 6 Degrees Bar and Lounge • 2 course sumptuous luncheon • Great raffle prizes • Business Card Draw • Presentation by guest speaker
