ORIENTATION

ORIENTATION

ATTRACTIONS

No matter where you are staying in Cairns, it is easy to find your way around. To the east is the sea, Fitzroy Island, Green island and the Great Barrier Reef, to the north: Port Douglas, the Daintree and Cooktown, to the west: the lush Tablelands, and outback Queensland and to the south: Mission Beach, Townsville and Airlie Beach. In the heart of Cairns is the impressive Esplanade, with professional skate park, beach volleyball and the spectacular lagoon: a backpacker hotspot and hub of activity. Come down to the lagoon on the weekend for free entertainment and markets, stroll the Esplanade taking in the chilled out vibe, or just sit and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes and restaurants that line the marina. Cairns is typically the start or end of the East Coast road trip, and there is no shortage of drinking holes, with bars and nightclubs dotted everywhere in the city for you to mingle and meet other travellers.

Aside from the lagoon and parklands, there are a heap of art galleries in the CBD, the Cairns Historical Museum, markets, cinemas, and screeds of shops. The main shopping centre – ten minute walk from the Esplanade – is Cairns Central, and is located on McLeod Street (head down Shields street from the Esplanade and you can’t miss it!) Getting out of town a little there is the Botanic Gardens, Northern Beaches, Crystal Cascades (freshwater swimming spot at Redlynch), AJ Hackett Bungy & Minjin, Cable Ski, Tjapukai, Skyrail, Kuranda Scenic Railway and more!

CITY LAYOUT The city itself is very plainly laid out in a grid, with parallel roads. The main roads in and out of Cairns are Mulgrave Road – which heads south becoming the Bruce Highway, taking you all the way to Brisbane. The other is Sheridan Street, which heads north to our beaches and becomes the Captain Cook Highway. From the beaches you can continue north to Port Douglas, the Daintree or Cooktown. Or if you head west at Smithfield up the Kennedy Highway it will take you to the Tablelands and along the Savannah Way to inner, outback Queensland… all the way to Darwin.

TRANSPORT Aside from hitting the pavement, the cheapest mode of transport around Cairns is with the Sunbus network. Timetables and prices are available at the Sunbus website: www.sunbus.com.au, and the bus depot is located on Lake street near Woolworths and City Place. Another great way to get around is on a scooter from Cairns Scooter and Bicycle Hire, prices range from $35 for 1-2 hours to $50 a day for 4+ days, it’s an economical way to get around outer Cairns. Visit www.cairnsbicyclehire.com.au for more information. Though probably the best way to get around is by car, if you can, get a couple of fellow travellers together and hire one. It’s cheap, gives you the freedom to explore more further reaching destinations like the Tablelands, has heaps more storage and a most importantly, a roof (needed in the wet season). For a whole week it can cost as little as $80 per person. Finally, the local taxi service is Black and White Taxis and their phone number is 131 008, with multiple ranks around town.

MUSIC Julia Stone needs little introduction! After blitzing Australia and the world with brother Angus, sheʼs now touring with a new solo album and show. Her beautiful, haunting vocals have earned her a strong international reputation and following, both as one half of the Angus and Julia Stone musical powerhouse, and in her own right. In May this year, Julia released her second solo album By The Horns and announced a national tour to promote it. Tanks says: “Juliaʼs voice will take you to another place and this is a not to be missed show”. Sheʼs sold out around the world (London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, LA, New York and more!) donʼt miss her in Cairns. Gig is on 23rd of September, doors open at 6pm and show starts at 7pm. Tickets cost $40 and can be purchased through Ticketlink: www.ticketlink.com.au or 1300 855 835

If Jazz is more your cup of tea then you canʼt go past Bernieʼs Jazz and Piano Café! Itʼs a cute little stand-alone bar/café on Abbott Street that is packed with heaps of charm! Head over anytime between 4pm to late, Tuesday to Sunday to see Bernie on the white baby grand or guest musicians, whilst enjoying a late afternoon and/or evening drink. Who said being a backpacker means youʼre confined to ʻoutbackʼ bars and kangaroo steaks… add a little flair to your time here.

Muso

of

the

month...

Ray-Lee

1. When and why did you start playing? I was inspired to write my own songs and play guitar at age 14 after hearing Emma Louiseʼs first CD. My parents say I have been singing since I could talk and I taught myself to play guitar at 14 from the internet to start with, then my piano teacher Kath Powell helped me and now I have lessons with Peter Ella from the band Kamerunga. 2. The first song(s) you learnt and wrote. The first song I ever learnt was a Taylor Swift song, it was about her mum and it is a beautiful song. The first song I wrote was about my oldest sister Teagan. It was for her 21st birthday and it was about how she inspired me, it was called ʻMy Heroʼ 3. How would you describe your style? My style changes a little with every new song I write, but I have been described as Indie/pop/rock. 4. What music influences you? I absolutely love Amy Winehouse and Sarah Blasko. 5. Which famous musicians do you admire and why? Sarah Blasko inspires me because she has an incredible voice that I can lose myself in and the lyrics to her songs are meaningful. 6. What experience and training do you have? My music career started with me busking most weekends at Rustyʼs Festival of Music at Rustyʼs Market.

This was a great place to learn the skills of performing to a crowd. I have been regularly gigging around the Cairns area for the past 2 years, including being support act for the recent Stan Walker gig on the esplanade. I have also had the privilege of being part of the 2012 Australian Team to travel to Hollywood, USA to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts. I competed in the Self Accompanied/ Vocal section in 5 genres. Original, Rock, Contemporary, Open and Pop. I won a Silver Medal for Original and Rock and Bronze for Contemporary and Open. I also got call backs from two major recording companies who have shown interest in working with me in the future. Full results of Aust Team at http://www.wcopa.com/2012medalists#Australia

7. What do you hope to achieve in your music career? I would like people to know who I am as a performer, recognise my name and love my music. 8. What is it like being a musician in FNQ? I feel very lucky to have begun my music career in Cairns. Most musicians in Cairns are very supportive of each other. I have been very privileged to have been mentored by the wonderful and talented Terry Doyle as well as having the support of many other respected musicians in the Cairns area, Peter Ella, Roz Pappalardo (Coordinator for A Venue), Ray Alias (EntertainmentCairns.com) just to name a few.

9. You favourite place to play in Cairns and why? My favourite place would have to be Havana Music Café on Lake Street. Brett gave me my first regular solo gig and I still think of Havana as being my second home. I also love playing at the Songwriters by the waterfront held each Thursday at Mondoʼs at the Hilton and run by Terry Doyle. 10. Have you got any awards, EP release, upcoming gigs etc. in the next month and is so, when and where. My Debut EP ʻLife is Differentʼ was released in Dec, 2011 and available at gigs for $10 and also can be downloaded from www.cdbaby.com/cd/raylee Upcoming Gigs - Freakishly Superb at the Village on the Esplanade – this Friday at 7.30pm. Millers Beach Bar, Mission Beach, Sunday 16th Sept from 3-6pm. Tableland Folk Festival, 27th Oct at Quincan Cottage from 7pm. Check www.entertainmentcairns.com/raylee for all my gigs. What do you love about Cairns? Cairns is alive with entertainment and music. I love meeting the locals and the tourists who come to hear me or other live music around the Cairns City. I also love the musicians who are travelling from down south or overseas. This is why I love calling Cairns and my hometown of Gordonvale home.

12 What On arOUnd tOWn!

What’sOn! Tune Into Heyday Words: Luke Madsen

While all Heyday performers are stars, a couple of acts have stood out already – not only for their joyous, rocking performances, but because they truly embody the Heyday ideal. The Distant Signals, for example – comprised of school students, 3 high school and one primary – played only their second gig ever at Mix #2. They easily covered songs from global rockers, including The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and belted out unassuming originals that defy the prosaic praise of any words mustered here.

Have you heard of Heyday Festival yet, the multi-arts youth festival that incorporates new and raw talent across music, performance, and exhibitions? No? You didnʼt make it to any of our free taster events, which included two nights of rocking music at The Jack and a trippedout retro-futuristic-themed audio-visual evening of avant-garde awesomeness at Freakishly Superb? Really, no? Thatʼs a shame. But itʼd be an even bigger shame if Heyday didnʼt save the best for last: its showcase event at Arthouse on October 6. Heyday Festival aims to develop Far North Queenslandʼs youth arts sector by nurturing young artists and creating new platforms for them to express and share their art. With that in mind, the Heyday team have cultivated initiatives such as the Budding Program for Young and Emerging Photographers and Filmmakers, and sourced many diverse, talented young musicians and performers.

Singer/songwriter Louarde was another standout, with her delicate crooning mesmerizing the audience. Louarde – pronounced Loo-are-dee – has been performing for only a few years, but after seeing her at Heyday, youʼll appreciate her knack for the stage has been lying dormant for much longer. At the other end of the rock spectrum, the metal band Salacious embodied the stage with a presence eerily unfamiliar to The Jack, and is set to pillage (metaphorically, of course) on October 6. And donʼt forget the myriad of other artists performing and exhibiting creations at Heyday Festival. From theatre, dance, and spoken word to mixed media, site-specific sculpture, photography, and film … such is the diversity of Heyday Festival. If youʼre (rightly) dubious by arts events that only cater to one genre, only show a handful of acts, then come and check out the exciting, raw, and innovative artists Heyday has uncovered for you. The inaugural Heyday Festival Showcase takes place on Saturday, 6 October, at Arthouse, Cairns (240 Scott St, via McCoombe St). For more information and tickets visit heydayfestival.com.au.

Music City For a lot of people, music is a big part of life – it can be the soundtrack to those awesome moments and helps you get through that breakup, itʼs therapy, your workout, fond memories, inspiration and relaxation. For travellers and locals alike, having a musical instrument is instant access to creating memories and that instant ʻgood vibeʼ. Itʼs no wonder then, that so many backpackers have their guitars strapped to their backpacks as they travel the world… I even saw someone trekking to Everest Base Camp with their precious guitar. With all the playing and travelling comes wear and tear… new picks, strings or even a whole new guitar (depending on what youʼre doing with your time). Music City in the Cairns CBD is a great place to fix your existing or buy a new guitar, supplying a huge range of products and brands to choose from. They have had 40 years experience supplying the locals with instruments and providing the right service, products and advice; and itʼs also the biggest Uke Shop in Australia! Ukuleles are the future for backpackers – they are cheaper than guitars, lighter, and easier to play. In fact, they are so easy to play when you come in to Music City, they will teach you the Ukulele in only 3 minutes, and itʼs free! Ukuleles are one of the few instruments that are easy to play and can be shared and enjoyed in informal and spontaneous situations… itʼs just not quite the same strapping your

keyboard to your backpacker or pulling out the small (and incredibly irritating) recorder for a tune around the campfire. Many of the Ukuleles at Music City you canʼt find overseas and the best quality, most affordable Ukulele is made right here in Australia. Prices range from $20 to $3000 depending on what youʼre after and the team at Music City will help choose the right one. Even if you feel musically challenged, a nice little Uke is a great souvenir of your time here. Although usually associated with Hawaii, when you hear the sound of a Uke you cant help but be transported to a tropical beach somewhere, with palms trees swaying in the breeze. Especially if you do buy a Uke and take it with you on your travels, when youʼre back home, working, studying or battling with the wind rain and snow, you can always pick up your little Uke, play a song and be reminded of all your amazing memories with your little Uke and all the tropical beaches you lay on. The best Ukeʼs, the ʻreal instrumentsʼ and the type most backpackers buy, are priced around $150-$200. For those that simply love their guitars, Music City have great variety with prices ranging form $69-$100, although apparently a Uke will improve your sex life more than a guitar… up to 1000%! And if you want to rub shoulders and get tips from other Uke players, head out to ʻStrait on the Beachʼ at Holloways Beach every Wednesday at 6:30pm and join in the biggest Uke club in Australia. Music City is located at 55 Sheridan Street, Cairns.

something a little less Mexican then you canʼt go past the Chilli Cheese Fries, Corona Beer Battered Fish and Chips, Parmigiana Mexicana or Rib Fillet Steak. The desserts are pretty hefty too so make sure you leave some room!

Everyone loves good Mexican food, and the menu at Green Ant Cantina is tantalising. You could easily work your way through the starters alone to experience all the great flavours. From standard items such as chips, bruschetta and garlic bread (with a Mexican twist), all the way through to Pork Belly Tacquitos and Corona Prawns, there is something for every taste bud. They also serve tasty burgers and salads as well as that staple and much loved dish… nachos!

As well as being an awesome place for great food to have a few drinks with friends, Green Ant Cantina is also a great place to catch local musicians and DJʼs. Getting to the meat in the sandwich, or in this case, the mains, Green Ant Cantina really tastes Mexican fusion food further with a great range of dishes that will have you coming back for more. Try the chicken or chorizo Quesadilla, the Fajitas, Enchiladas or the Macho Burrito. If you fancy

Then on the 22nd from 9pm is Dan Rolls. Ballarat musician Dan Rolls is a must see unique Australian artist. “Waters with alluring hues of turquoise and aquamarine and an undersea world of colours that artists only dream about, this is the Great Barrier Reef.”

The Great Barrier Reef is of such pristine condition that it was listed by the World Heritage Trust as a protected site and is therefore managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority to ensure that its beauty is maintained for many generations to come. Visitors in their thousands come to marvel at the spectacular sight seeing opportunities that is unique to our area. Off the Cairns coastline are outer edge ribbon reefs which can be seen by taking one of the daily outer reef cruises offered by local operators. One of the best ways to view the reef is to take a low flying scenic flight over it, especially at low tide where you'll see the breadth and diversity of this great living wonder. The waters off the great barrier reef provide the world's busiest and most varied marine habitats. Marine life is in abundance. From the many species of coral to the sought after Black Marlin and all sizes and species of fish inbetween. The varied colours of the reef's fish and other marine life will astound the visitor with colour combinations

that artists haven't even dreamed of. Although the reef stretches more than 2000 kilometres offshore from Queensland, it is only at Cape Tribulation, just north of Port Douglas that the reef comes right to the shore and meets the tropical rainforests of the Wet Tropics. The Reef has over 1000 islands which are easily accessible from North Queensland and coastal cities like Cairns and Port Douglas are idealistically positioned to visit these. The coral islands are very popular tourist attractions, the closest to Cairns being Green Island and Franklin Island. Whilst these islands are great for one day trips (having the shortest commute), the outer reefs are by far the more spectacular. Consider an overnight trip for the ultimate experience to the outer reef. All the dive boats are luxurious and the staff have extensive experience of the Great Barrier Reef. If you’re just not adventurous enough to don the mask and dive.... you’l be surprised how much you can see from just snorkelling. You can even hear the parrot fish munching on the coral!

Barefoot Tours – watch out for killer cows!

On a day where rain clouds hung in the air, and threatened to pour, I jumped on Shikaka (our trusty ride for the day) and we heard her story as we buzzed around Cairns picking up the rest of the group. Then we started on our trip heading south from Cairns to Gordonvale. We checked the Gilles highway on the way past (that is the usual route back home) and it was still closed due to the heavy rain. Matty already had a plan for an alternative route as we trundled down the pot-holed Bruce Highway, listening to his great knowledge on butterflies, crocs and the how the landscape has changed since Gondwanaland. Time flew and before we knew it we were at Josephine Falls. Unfortunately, because of the recent heavy rain Josephine Falls was too flooded to swim in (especially as it is prone to flash flooding). However, marvelling at the sheer volume and power of the water was just as fun! After all our video and photo taking at the falls, we enjoyed the yummy morning tea that Matty had prepared for us in the picnic area: fresh exotic, local fruit, muffins, banana loaf and local tea, coffee and hot chocolate! When we were full to bursting it was time to get back on Shekaka and head to our next waterfall destination: Millaa Millaa Falls. As a local, the drive up the Palmerston Highway is

my favourite drive with my favourite scenery in the whole of the Cairns area, and I couldnʼt get enough, looking out the window and drinking in the beautiful pockets of rainforest that covered the undulating hills far into the horizon. After chatting to Matty about killer terrorist cows, and his experience working just about everywhere: white water rafting, bungy jumping etc. we arrived at the breathtaking Millaa Millaa Falls – the iconic waterfall experience. Only a few of us jumped in and swam out to behind the waterfall and although the water was a little chilly, it was really refreshing and staring back at the group through a curtain of water was awesome. Then after photos we headed to the Millaa Millaa Hotel for a pub lunch. With yummy pub grub in a typical Aussie, small town pub, and two complimentary jugs of beer placed on the bar, we all started to get to know each other better. We then headed off to Dinner Falls and Mount Hypipamee Crater. The area is know for Cassowary sightings, but alas, we were unlucky that day. However, after staring down the crater, we were all intrigued with the huge groups of hairy caterpillars that collected in groups and moved in single file along the railings. Dinner Falls, although spectacular with the recent rain, was a bit too muddy and flooded for my liking hence why we didnʼt get in.

The tour would normally continue to Lake Eacham and then down the Gillies Range, however, due to the Gillies being closed we had to choose between going to Lake Eacham and then heading down the Kuranda range or heading to Kuranda to see the mighty Barron Falls in flood. As most in the group were too cold from the rain to swim, we decided to go to Barron Falls. It was incredible! As a local, I had never seen Barron Falls raging like it was! We had afternoon tea of chips and dips, coffee, tea and cakes looking out over the falls and after a little rain shower and huddling under umbrellas, the sun came out and created a rainbow in the mist from the waterfall. Bundling back into Shikaka, we wound down the Kennedy Highway back to Cairns where we dropped everyone off with a hug and a wave and ended the tour. It was such a great day, I had heaps fun and loved getting to know the group and hearing all the local knowledge from Matty. The areas that we visited are my favourite part of the Cairns area, and the tour is a great opportunity to see a lot of the area, without the stress of driving yourself. I highly recommend this tour! So go on, book a tour so Matty can afford to buy a pair of shoes!

Looking for work? Landing a job. Itʼs all about overcoming negative stereotypes. Some employers have a negative perception of hiring backpackers. Why? Most of these employers with this negative perception have had a bad experience with a backpacker employee in the past. Your resume, presentation and interview skills need to overcome this perception. How? Your interview skills need to concentrate on the positive aspects of hiring backpackers. Some of the really positive aspects of hiring backpackers include: • Employers can hire really skilled people. What transferable skills can you take to the industry that you want to work in? • A lot of travellers are really hard working. Think about your own situation – you want to save money so are looking at extra shifts, you donʼt mind working on the weekend • Lots of industries are happy with short term

Rebecca from JobSnap.com.au

workers. Focus your job search in these industries. • Backpackers are bright and breezy, a breath of fresh air to the organisation. You donʼt get caught up in organizational politics. When you have the job, you need to be a star staff member and ensure that you give 110%. Some tips: • Turn up to work on time •Be honest with your employer from the outset about how long you want to stay for. • Be professional. • Abide by all company rules. No, donʼt steal the toilet paper. It is still theft. • Donʼt stay up all night partying and go to work with a hangover. • You might be living in close quarters, however personal hygiene is very important By ensuring that you act with integrity and professionalism, you are making headway for all of the backpackers that will follow in years to come. Are you going to be a great backpacker employee, or one that gives the whole industry a bad name?

HOW TO TAKE AMAZING UNDERWATER PHOTOS & VIDEOS For snorkeling or Scuba Diving, you don’t need to be a Professional to take great underwater photos. Here are some basic tips for beginners: • Get close! Getting as close as you can to your subject will improve sharpness, contrast and colour, which are all reduced by water. • Use your cameras flash only if you can get within 1 metre (3 feet). • Try to separate your subject from it’s background, shooting from a lower angle helps with this. • As much as possible, shoot with the sun behind you, or over your shoulder. This improves the clarity of the water in front of you. • If you are photographing fish, focus on the eyes and try to fill the frame with your subject. • Avoid zooming where possible as this increases the chances of blurriness from “camera shake”. • If you are using digital, set your camera white balance to “underwater” (if available) or “shade”. For advanced users, try setting a “manual” white balance when you are in the water. • Keep shooting! The more photos you take of your subject, the better the chances are of scoring a great shot. Change the composition for better variety. GET CLOSE! Cameras are available for hire or you can buy, and there's a great selection of cameras and accessories for novice and professionals. You also receive a CD with all your pics which will be the best souvinir of your trip to the reef. See Wet REZ on Shields Street, near the Esplanade (opposite McDonalds/Lagoon).

Day cruise with

DOWN UNDER CRUISE & DIVE I have been out to the Great Barrier Reef a number of times, and I’m being completely honest when I say that the trip with Down Under Tours was the best! My trusted travel partner, Mark, and I boarded the boat at the reef fleet terminal on a gorgeous sunny, calm morning wedged between two week-long bouts of rain.

As we boarded the friendly crew and ‘Elvis’ greeted us, and who made us all feel welcome and excited about the day ahead. Heading out to the reef we enjoyed tea, coffee and biscuits whilst the crew dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s about the day’s proceedings. We slathered ourselves with sunscreen and enjoyed sitting on the deck at the bow of the boat, soaking up the sunshine and letting the wind whip through our hair as we powered further out through the shimmering turquoise water to the reef. Having done an introductory dive three times already I was really looking forward to getting back under the water. The instructors: Sam and Snoopy (aka Kim), who have 20 years of diving experience between them, explained the diving process in a very informative, engaging and humourous way to put our minds at ease. Donning some very sexy bright blue, Lycra stinger suits, we headed out to do some snorkelling while we waited for our groups turn to go diving. Whilst hoping to see a stingray, shark or turtle, we only managed to spot Bicolour Parrotfish and marvel at the array of coral. Despite the recent, heavy rain causing limited visibility, we were still able to see heaps, and even just the suns rays lighting up the underwater landscape was beautiful. Soon it was our turn, so we put on our weights, air tanks, fins and goggles to get under the water with our guide and instructor, Sam. We were helped to the edge of the boat wearing the heavy equipment and sitting on the edge, feet dangling in the water, I felt a little nervous. The nerves soon disappeared as we dove down to explore the underwater world beneath us. It was great seeing Nemo, taking in the watery silence with the occasional sounds of bubbles and water swishing around us, and the constant in and out of Darth Vader breathing through the tank. It was fun touching the smooth cold sea cucumbers that sit on the sand, and the silky purple inside of a giant clam

(and taking lots of photos). The twenty minutes or so underwater went by too quickly! Back at the surface we snorkelled some more, hearing that others had seen a black tip reef shark. After the snorkelling we tucked into a yummy BBQ lunch buffet of sausages, steak, prawns, fish, salami, pasta salad, potato salad and more! We relaxed on the boat after lunch, lazing in the sun and taking in the gorgeous day and then headed to the second dive location. As we arrived a turtle popped its head up to say hello, which was awesome to watch! I tried to get my fins and snorkel on as quickly as I could to get in the water for a swim with the turtle, but alas, he was gone by the time I’d jumped in. After snorkelling for a bit to try and find him or possibly a shark, Mark and I couldn’t resist doing another dive. This time, Kim took us out, and with our experience from the first dive, we had more freedom to explore and get snap happy. The second reef was more interesting with its cliffs and valleys of coral to investigate, more fish (including what looked like a dwarf spotted cod, and angelfish), and different kinds to those we had seen previously. Again, it was over too soon and before we knew it Kim was leading us back to the surface. We snorkelled some more, trying to dive down and hold our breath to get a closer look at (and take photos of) an anemone and some more clown fish. We heading back to the boat for some juicy fresh fruit to take the salty seawater taste out of our mouths, as the crew started winding up the days activities. On the way home we were subjected… or rather, delighted to a performance by Elvis as we munched on cheese and crackers and drank wine, reflecting on all that we had seen under the water and singing along to ‘It’s a Wonderful World’. The crew were so friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting to Elvis and also to Sam about his fascination with sharks and his many diving experiences. The whole crew were efficient and organised, but relaxed, laid-back and fun which made it easy to kick back, chill out and fully enjoy the day! As I said, after four different companies and trips out to the reef, Down Under Cruise and Dive, was the most enjoyable experience! View more photos! The number 1 way to see the reef!

VIEW FROM ABOVE If there is one thing about the destination of Cairns, the scenery stands out as simply magnificent. What’s more, the sheer size of the Rainforests sweeping down to the Coral Sea, when viewed from above, will take your breath away. In fact, there is no better way to ‘visit’ the Great Barrier Reef than to actually view it from the sky. This is why you will notice the postcards of the area are nearly always featured from above. If you were ever going to take a ride of you life, then by all means, Cairns is a first class area to try a helicopter ride. The thrill of the ride alone is an adventure, however, the views will give you

picturesque memories forever. Heli Charters are available for a quick tour around the city area (10 minutes), to complete visits to the outer barrier reef. A 20 minute rainforest tour, takes you up the Barron River to the spectacular falls then returns you along the coastline, or you can have your helicopter lift you over the reefs and join Osprey V for lunch and diving or snorkelling. This is by far a ‘complete’ way to really see why The Great Barrier Reef is recognized as the eighth wonder of the world - from above and from under the water. Highly recommended.

WAXING while Travelling When travelling, you are meeting others all the time, and although you’ve been wearing the same few sets of the clothes for the past six months, it’s nice to still feel great on the outside. In Cairns you can bronze up, unwind, de-fuzz and get bikini ready at great low prices by professional, trained staff. The Wax Pot and Tanning Studio is a relaxed beauty salon that is easily accessible, located on Sheridan Street in the heart of the city. They offer a range of treatments from waxing, tanning, facials, eyelash and eyebrow tints, massages, pedicures and manicures, and great packages. All the salons have an upbeat, funky atmosphere whilst the friendly staff tend to all your beauty needs. One of the most popular treatments are Henna Tattoos. You can choose from a wide range of designs or create your own! The tattoo lasts on average two weeks, and are applied by piping a natural Henna mix (that is made on site) onto the skin in your chosen design. So give them a call, and get your body beautified!

ACTIVITIES

photo Jungle Surfing in Cape Trib...

JUNGLE SURFING I am unashamedly afraid of heights… always the one in a group with a cold sweat, the sinking feeling in my stomach and shaking hands. I am the one that will never go first, but could never go last, and I always look like Iʼm not really enjoying myself whilst everyone else is pumped up with adrenalin. However, my trusty travel buddy Mark convinced me that all would be well, so we drove up to Cape Tribulation on a gorgeous sunny day (stopping at the pretty Port Douglas for brunch) to try Jungle Surfing. We were lucky enough to experience the opening day of The Snake House - the new meeting point for Jungle Surfing Tours. Itʼs a great place to meet the others in your tour, grab a cool drink, browse some of the souvenirs and check out the snakes. Itʼs also in the perfect position for those scared of heights (like me), that need a quiet drink after the tour (right next to PKʼs Jungle Village). Soon it was our turn and we all got in the minivan to head up the steep hill of heavy rainforest to start the tour. At the top we came to a little hut and were greeted by Evan from New Zealand and Leigh from the UK. After putting our belongings away into lockers and getting harnesses and helmets (Mark was ʻTarzanʼ and I was ʻStifflerʼs Mumʼ), we started the short walk up to the first platform where Evan went through all the safety instructions. Before I knew it Mark, rather, Tarzan had been pulleyed up to the first platform and it was my turn. With my fear of what was to come I assessed the first section, and how far I was above the ground and decided that it wasnʼt as bad as I previously thought, and started to relax. Then came the wire to the next platform, which sent the butterflies in my stomach off again. Thankfully, itʼs done in pairs so Tarzan and I were able to go together as I got

used to being so high off the ground. The views of Sorrow Hill out to sea and the gorgeous blue water and rainforest stretching underneath us was breath taking. We even saw a Ulysses Butterfly flitting through the rainforest trees as we took in the amazing view. Evan told us some of the history of Captain Cook and Cape Tribulation, as well as information about the flora, fauna and history of the rainforest. Heading to the next platform, we were stopped in the middle of the wire so we could look down through the canopy to the rainforest floor caused by a little stream cutting through the trees. I looked briefly which was enough and instead concentrated on looking at majestic Sorrow Hill and at the tallest part of the rainforest – the canopy – that surrounded me as I dangled in mid-air. It was great to get a sense of how high we were and Tarzan was having a ball filming and taking photos, but I was glad to get to the next platform where we chatted to Leigh about what it was like to work for Jungle Surfing. Next came the hard part – on your own with no hands! I managed to let go with one hand, but as hard as I tried, the other seemed super-glued to the green rope. I at least got a photo to prove I wasnʼt a total petrified! The last part to the final platform was the best (but I donʼt want to give away too much!), and although I was still nervous, I actually enjoyed the last section so much I was laughing as I grabbed Leighʼs hand to pull me up onto the final platform. Jungle Surfing was a great experience and the whole Jungle Surfing team including Evan and Leigh were great. The tour was excellent, and I highly recommend it as a unique and fun way to see the Cape Tribulation rainforest – the oldest continually living rainforest in the world!

IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE! Want a truly unique reef adventure? Then jump aboard with Ocean Safari! “It only takes 25 minutes to get out to the reef so everyone gets at least two hours of snorkelling time so you get to see a wide variety of fish species and beautiful corals – you may even get to swim with turtles and find Nemo!” Snorkel the pristine untouched Great Barrier Reef off the Daintree Coast at Cape Tribulation and visit two different snorkel destinations such as Mackay & Undine Reefs for extraordinary array of Marine life and coral species. Ocean Safari has reported that guests have been lucky enough to spot turtles, dolphins and even Dugongs over the last two months. Deano, Operations Manager at Ocean Safari said: “With the conditions being so good this wet season we’ve been spotting so much out on the reef, sometimes you don’t even need to get off the boat to see the turtles!” The Daintree rainforest is home to many unique forms of plant and animal life. On most days you can see the rainforest along the mainland beach whilst snorkelling. Your experienced Skipper and Eco Host will ensure that your trip is filled with fun and appreciation of the natural beauty and marine and bird life within this World Heritage area. The World Heritage rainforest has not changed in thousands of years making it the oldest living rainforest on earth. This is incredibly important to the Great Barrier Reef, which is at its closest point to the mainland in the Daintree and Cape Tribulation area. The reef is pristine and does not suffer from silting and runoff created by agriculture like other sections of the reef further south from the Daintree. For an unforgettable day visiting the best part of one of the world’s largest natural wonders, visit the website www.oceansafari.com.au, or call 07 4098 0006 and book today! Ocean Safari is a half-day tour leaving at either 8am or 12pm.

BILLY TEA SAFARI A visit to north Queensland isn’t complete unless you visit the Daintree or outback Queensland. Beauty of the

Dry Season The dry season is peak tourism season in Cairns and itʼs not hard to see why! Normally, there are clear blue skies and barely any rain… perfect for diving on the reef and visiting the areas islands and beaches. Days spent relaxing by the lagoon without the melting heat of summer mean whole days can be spend contemplating or reading a book without the fear of bad sunburn and sunstroke. The lack of rain also makes it easier to get to Cape Tribulation without the worry for floods and East Coast road trips are a breeze without having to have a Plan B in case the Bruce Highway gets cut off. So make the most of the calm conditions! The rainforest, beaches and islands should definitely be explored during this period as it is no longer ʻstinger seasonʼ (jellyfish) which runs from October to May. It makes jumping in the sea that much more inviting and enjoyable without having to be cautious and swim in stinger nets. The lack of heavy rain also means visibility on the reef is fantastic. Despite the ʻtrade windsʼ that make the sea a bit rough during the dry season, if you plan to scuba dive deep below, then it doesnʼt matter whatʼs happening on the surface! The dry season is also the perfect time to venture inland to Outback Queensland, as during the wet season much of the area is cut off due to floods. There is only a few months left of our dry season so now is the time to start thinking about and booking a 4WD to start your adventure on the road less travelled. The Queensland Outback is a land like no other; magnificent geographical landscapes meet clear, blue, cloudless skies as the red dirt paints the terrain. The locals are friendlier than their coastal cousins, and the ʻyarnsʼ told are of a hardened breed. In outback Queensland there really is so much to explore, so many great experiences to be had, and so much of the road less travelled to write home about. Labelled ʻrugged and unspoiltʼ, outback Queensland sets apart the holidaying backpackers from the real adventurers. Climb up sand dunes, inspect dinosaur fossils, explore wetlands, feel the thrill of desert riding and the cool relief of billabongs. “Breathe in the fresh unpolluted air of the Outback and escape to a world free of meetings, deadlines and peak hour traffic. This is the real Australia! A land of legends, adventure, ancient mysteries, breath-taking landscapes and the colourful characters who call this place home.” Many will disagree where the boundary of ʻoutbackʼ starts, and being a costal kid I would say Undara is the tipping point from

Cairns. Here you can explore ancient lava tubes created under the ground and if staying the night, sleep in an old convergent rail carriage and listen to stories around a campfire. During the dry season - when temperatures during the day are low - is the best time to visit the dry and hot interior of Queensland. Itʼs still gets quite cold at night so make sure you pack plenty of warm clothes and a good quality, warm sleeping bag. Evenings camping in the outback of this beautiful state we live in are magical… no light pollution means the best view of the stars and milky-way and just chilling with your mates around a campfire with a beer and talking late into the night are the small memories that will have a lasting impact for years to come. Further south from Cairns and Undara is Charters Towers, and old mining town once famous for the gold there. Charters Towers feels a bit like a step back in time because (unlike Cairns), many of the heritage buildings are still intact. Here you have unique experiences to choose from like panning for gold, looking out of the town from Towers Hill and ghost tours. If you have the opportunity to go ballooning whilst you are in Cairns then the ʻdryʼ season (winter) is perfect. Seeing the sun rise and wake up the landscape as you hang thousands of feet in the air is a special experience that is difficult to describe. Heading further west you pass Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek and Cloncurry to Mount Isa. Here youʼre getting close to the Northern Territory border and the heart of the Australian outback. Again, another mining town famous for silver and lead but unlike Charters Towers, the mine at Mount Isa is still pumping out copper, zinc, lead and silver today. Activities for visitors include the underground hospital built in WWII. Make sure you take everywhere you go when you visit outback Queensland. If youʼre not trying to capture a termite mound in the uncanny shape of something familiar, or the interesting and crazy wildlife and geography, itʼs the sunsets. The sunsets inland in winter are the best! From a pale yellow through to gold, burnt orange and deep red, the sun and itʼs parting farewell every evening paints the landscapes gorgeous hues that take you breath away. So make the most of our tropical winter and the absence of heavy rain, flooding, storms and cyclones and get busy booking trips to see our reef, islands, beaches, rainforest and outback, because it is all of these different environments that make up this beautiful area: North Queensland… an travellers playground!

Going West...

Mt Isa

The Buffs Club Described as the Oasis of the Outback - a gleaming mirage on the horizon for travellers from all directions - Mount Isa nestles among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges, on the banks of the Leichhardt River. Mount Isa has grown from strength to strength over the years but the harsh picturesque landscape has barely changed, becoming one of the main drawcards for visitors each year. Mount Isa brings out the adventurous spirit in everyone, with ample places to fish, camp, four wheel drive, or relax and enjoy an Outback sunset. The rugged terrain is a four wheel driver's haven, and visitors can explore the region just as the pioneers of the region did many years ago. The twin jewels in Mount Isa's crown are the spectacular Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park and its neighbour, the world-heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields, both of which are accessed from Mount Isa. A must see while in Mount Isa is the Outback at Isa complex, incorporating the award winning Riversleigh Fossil Centre, Hard Times Mine, Sir James Foots Building, Outback Park and Visitor Information Centre. Other attractions are the School of the Air, the Royal Flying Doctors base, National Trust Tent House, Underground Hospital and Beth Anderson Museum, surface tours of Mount Isa Mines and fishing for barramundi at Lake Moondarra. Mount Isa's existence and its main financial base is the huge Mount Isa Mine, the world's largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc. In 1923, John Campbell Miles found a silver-lead ore outcrop and sent a sample to Cloncurry to be assessed. Miles pegged two leases and soon 500 were filled. Mount Isa Mines took over operations in 1924. This rich deposit is still producing high volumes of ore and is classed as one of the world's great mines.

The Buffs Club is located in the heart of Mount Isa is known for its great atmosphere, top food, cold beers and a variety of services and facilities all under the one roof. Our Bluetongue Sports Bar is the perfect place to watch the game, play pool or place a bet on Keno or the TAB. Why not try your luck on one of the latest and greatest Poker machines.
