PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Publisher’s Note With Father’s Day falling this month, the CairnsLife team thought it would be a great time to celebrate the many wonderful fathers working in the Cairns business community. It’s a tough job balancing the daily commitments of a family life and a busy career, but all our fabulous fathers are doing just that - and doing it brilliantly. From personal experience, I remember my dad always being flat out with his businesses, but he was always there for me. At my hockey games, cheering me on and screaming “hit the ball harder Cracker” and scaring any boys away that tried to talk to me, or just at the times when I needed a listening ear. As far as I’m concerned, my La Papa is the epitome of a great dad! As well as Father’s Day, this month brings one of the most exciting events for the ladies, the Amateurs ball, and it’s also the beginning of the high school formal season. Our lovely and creative stylist Amanda Macor brings you the best in fashion, as she showcases beautiful ball and formal wear, and the best for Father, with special gift ideas for your Dad. Something for everyone! Have a great September and remember... everyone smiles in the same language, so get yours on!

There isn’t a working parent on the planet who hasn’t at some time or another felt torn between their working and home life. Much focus is placed on the Supermums of today who successfully juggle a career with motherhood, and we unreservedly salute them all; but this month, in honour of Father’s Day, we’re paying our respects to all the Superdads, too. Our writers have had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful group of fathers who, while managing to make their mark in their respective careers, are simply ‘Dad’ when at home with their families. It’s a hard ask to be able to walk that fine line of balance between the two, but these guys seem to have cracked the formula. They are all successful in their fields and, while their approach to business may be different, the common thread running through all the interviews is this: no matter how much passion and commitment they have for their business, all these working dads agree – there’s nothing more important than family.

Mark Kamsler, Paul Kamsler (Snr), Paul Kamsler (Jnr)

After arriving in Cairns in the 1950’s with just a dream, the Kamsler family have built a legacy for generations to come. What began as a three-week holiday for Paul Kamsler Snr and his wife Dina resulted in a 60-year love affair with the city and the establishment of its first international hotel. Now celebrating The Pacific International’s 30th birthday, Executive Director Paul Kamsler Jnr continues the family tradition, displaying the same work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit of his parents.

Even though birthdays, anniversaries, and other events come every year like clockwork, it can be difficult deciding what the perfect gift is for the man in your life. Often, the response, “I don’t know” does not cut it and we are faced with an overload of options without much of an idea where to start. Here are some top ideas for presents to help you decide what to give that indecisive male in your life…. Tattoo In today’s age it is not uncommon for men to have and get tattoos….if your special man in your life loves ink, why not try getting him a voucher for an everlasting present. Hair Cut or Spa Treatment Who says women are the only ones who need pampering? Why not book your man in for a treatment and cut? Or spa session? Might even be a subtle way of getting him to cover that gray or smooth out those rough edges. Massage Often the daily grind can take it’s toll on our mind…..and body! Massage is an excellent way to relieve this. If a simple massage isn’t enough, massage therapy sessions might also be a good idea to help remove those aches and pains. Jewellery Often we like to give gifts that remind people of us, and this is the perfect way to do just that! Why not give him a nice ring, bracelet or necklace? Just make sure you know his style, and if he prefers silver or gold. Wallets and Accessories A great gift idea as often men seem to neglect replacing these, and would prefer to keep their money in it than spend on it. Just make sure you put a coin in it for good luck! Adventure Bound If the man in your life is a bit of a trill seeker, get him to take the leap…….. out of a plane! Maybe a fishing charter or even a hot air balloon ride. There are heaps of options to choose from to give your man’s heart racing and an experience to remember! Flowers Gone are the days where women are the only ones who receive flowers, and everyone needs to get colour in their life. Surprise him with a bouquet of flowers to show him how much you appreciate him blossoming in your world.

Immigration laws and policies have become increasingly complex and changing which is why the role.of registered migration agents is now very important . At Carol Shipway Migration Services I offer consultations to work through the immigration issues and visa options. Together with my assistants Sarah and Julie we prepare, lodge and manage visa applications and assist with other immigration matters. As a Registered Migration Agent I also act on behalf of my clients with review applications to the Migration Review Ttribunal.. If you, family members, friends or employers are involved in immigration processes or are considering future options then it is important to keep up with the changes and seek professional advice rather than rely on “word of mouth” or second hand information which can often be incorrect. On 1 July 2012 there were extensive changes made to the Skills visas and employer sponsored visa categories. This has had an impact on the Cairns region as many businesses have used the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) to fill skilled positions where there is a shortage of skilled people.. The RSMS is now made up of 3 streams, : Direct Entry for people who are applying from in Australia or offshore and have not held a temporary 457 visa Transitional – for 457 visa holders who have been sponsored by their employer for 2 years Agreement Stream – for applicants who are being sponsored under a tailored migration agreement.

I am an ADDICT

by Paul Egan, Egan & Turner Travel Associates

It all started back when I was about thirteen or fourteen and I read the great James A Michener’s novel The Drifters. The book follows six young characters from diverse backgrounds and various countries as their paths meet and they travel together through parts of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Mozambique. It started a fire in my belly, a desire to see the world that I have still not quenched to this day. Fortunately I have managed to find myself working in an industry that allows me to feed this addiction, or at least justify the minimum four overseas trips per year that I just have to go on. As a Travel Consultant I have lost count of the number of times that I have been asked what my favourite destination is so, this month I thought I would turn it around and ask some of my most well travelled clients. Here’s a selection of their responses:French Polynesia on a 14 day cruise on the “Aranui 3”, this Copra collecting ship takes 200 passengers from Tahiti in total comfort to 8 islands of the Marquesas and Tuamotos, this is the real South Seas visiting spectacular islands like Hiva Oa and Nuku Hiva, with beautiful friendly people, great food, great culture, and beautiful scenery, a must on every Travellers list. Ken Reed – Cairns We loved Cuba! The people are so friendly and not at all intrusive. The beaches were fantastic with glistening white sand and beautiful sparkling blue / green water, all accompanied by live music, cocktails and great food – and so inexpensive! The old cars and architecture were fascinating. So too was the history, in particular world events from a Cuban perspective. Dr Russell d’Scarlett – Cairns

that travellers have to do as they please, which in itself is quite odd, considering the tight controls that are placed on the Laos citizens. Laos’s people are some of the friendliest you will ever meet; I mean a real genuine friendly not just a pretend friendlily for the tourist. They love travellers and some very real friendships are formed. If you are lucky enough to be invited to one of their parties, accept this you have to see. The Food – yummy, say no more. The Scenery – some of the most spectacular scenery, a feast for your eyes Michelle Fiumara – Vientiane, Laos Alpbach, Austria: A beautiful little village situated right in the middle of Tirol. Fabulous skiing in winter & picturesque walking in the summer. Always the freshest of mountain air & never too far to go for that well earnt refreshing beer or schnapps! Paul Mckenna – Aberdeen, Scotland My favourite destination by far is India; I love the colour the Chaos and the unbelievably diverse culture and way of life. One of my favourite cities in India (and this is a hard one as there are many) is Varanasi, spending a few hours down on the Ghats is a sensory over load not available in any other country I have been. Ben Gale – Canggu, Bali No doubt about it...India. I just love the complete contrast to life in Australia. Especially in the first few days after you land, you a just blown away by just about everything you look at whether it be a bus so overloaded both inside, on top and hanging out the sides that the wheels are splayed or a cow lying on the doorstep of the shop you are going to

jJourneys of a lifetime...

I would have to say Laos. The absolute freedom

Are you an adventure seeker, cultural aficionado or nature lover? Discover the staggeringly beautiful mountains and ancient traditions of Nepal – an ancient land like no other. Or consider an eye-opening and unforgettable journey from the bustling city of Lima to the mystery of the Sacred Valley in Peru. If you’ve always dreamed of embarking on a life-changing adventure, let Egan & Turner Travel Associates offer a range of journeys to some of the world’s most inspiring regions.

visit wearing a necklace of marigolds. That so many people speak English and love answering your questions is a bonus and I am fascinated that the people are so incredibly resourceful in the face of such crippling poverty. Shona Paterson – Cairns Spain: Alpujarras and towns of Granada and Cordoba. White villages nestled in the valleys. Walking over gentle hills between the villages and staying in little guest houses each evening eating good local food. Dr Elena Mantz – Cairns The number one thing I have learnt from all of my travels is that I come from an amazing place and the more I travel, the more I feel blessed that I come from Australia. This vast country has so much to offer, the only thing I can think of that we don’t have is mountains, not real ones anyway. So if pressed to answer my response is going to have to be a tie, Nepal or Peru. It’s not just about the awesome peaks, like my fellow travellers above, the experience also comes down to the fascinating cultures and the beautiful people you meet along the way. Where ever you choose to travel this year have fun!

Five Spring Tips Prepare for Sniffles... If you know you’re prone to sniffles and sneezes as the weather warms up, now is the time to stock up on allergy medications. Clean up the make-up case... Like most products, cosmetics expire. So while you’re cleaning out your medicine cabinet, toss out that tube of mascara, that concealer container, and any other makeup you’ve had so long you can’t remember when you bought it. This way, you’ll be able to minimise your risk of eye infections or bacteria-induced breakouts. Early bird catches the worm... Studies have shown that people who wake up earlier are healthier than those night owls who snooze the morning away. Taking advantage of the morning light will also give you a good dose of needed vitamin D. And you’ll get a leg up on symptoms of depression. Get in the Garden

HE L LO SPRING

Not only does it make your landscaping pretty, but gardening also burns approximately 250 to 350 calories an hour. For optimal health benefits, garden three times a week for an hour at a time. Anything that makes you sweat—mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, hauling mulch— qualifies as exercise. Rotate tasks every 20 minutes or so to give all your major muscle groups a workout and to avoid overstraining one set of muscles. No need for the gym! Change Your Pillows Some experts estimate that, after five years, up to 10 percent of a pillow’s weight is made up of allergy- or asthma-provoking bacteria, pollen, fungi, mold, and dust mites. Disgusting, yes, so take steps to allergyproof pillows with protective covers that seal out allergens, and wash pillowcases with hot water weekly. Can’t remember when you actually bought your pillows? Experts recommend tossing them out every three to five years.

Getting What Makes you Happy by Isiah McKimmie

When we go to a restaurant, we order the meal we want, not whatever the waiter decides to serve us. Some nights we feel like ordering steak, other nights chicken... The chef doesn’t take offense because we order the caesar salad instead of the garlic prawns. Imagine if we expected the chef to just guess what we felt like that particular night... It would be ridiculous of course. So why, when it comes to sex do we so often just take whatever is ‘served’ to us, without asking for what it is we actually want? Some people worry they’ll hurt their partner’s feelings if they ask for something different. Others partners say that they wish they had more direction when it comes to sex, “I really want to please her... I just wish she’d tell me what she wants!” I’ve heard “He did this thing with his tongue once that I loved! But after 7 years of that same thing, I’m bored.” And “She liked that last time... why didn’t it work this time?” What we liked one

night, we may not enjoy the next. In the case of women what we liked five minutes ago, we may not like now. We can’t expect our partners to be mindreaders. It doesn’t mater how long you’ve been together, your partner can not be responsible for reading your mind and knowing what you want in every moment. Sex won’t always be toe-curling but there are things you can do to improve

your sexual satisfaction (and that of your partner). Two things come to the top of my list: knowing what we like and good communication. (Of course a healthy, loving relationship is also a vital component.) It’s important that we know what we like and have the confidence to ask for it.

may be helpful to explore some of these beliefs with a trusted professional. How we feel about our bodies can also contribute to how we feel about sex. For example, many women feel uncomfortable having sex because they don’t like their partner seeing them naked. Talking about sex can be challenging, but if we’re going to do it, we’d better get used to talking about it. Try these suggestions...

Passionate Spirit 0424 363 288 isiah@www.www.passionatespirit.com.au www.facebook.com/pages/Passionate-Spirit/132595110126311

Start with a compliment or appreciation. “I love what you’re doing right now... You really turn me on... I love how good I feel with you...” And then ask for something different. “What I would really like right now is... It would really drive me wild right now if you... Could you try...” Ask for feedback. “Is that the right place? Is there something you would like more?

Would harder or softer/faster or slower feel

better?” Sex is a constant experiment, don’t feel like you have to get it ‘right’ all the time. And don’t be afraid to seek support if you’re facing ongoing challenges around sex or your relationship. Sex really can be wonderfully fun!

PROSTATE CANCER

Everybody knows someone with it.

More than 3000 men die from prostate cancer in Australia every year. One out of every eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes. The chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer is doubled if a man’s father or brother has been diagnosed.

The good news is that many men can be treated and

Cairns Amateurs Ball This event is the social highlight of the Cairns Amateurs Carnival. The first Cairns Amateurs Ball was held in 1959 at Cannon’s farm – a beautiful property owned by George & Dorothy Cannon. 2011 saw the gala event move to the water’s edge at the award winning Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal on the Cairns Inlet. Enjoy the glamour of the North’s most prestigious event under the stars; a premium seafood buffet dinner with premium beverages. Dance the night away to a seamless assortment of colourful live music and enjoy the visual splendour of fireworks dancing over the water. Tickets to the ball includes a five hour premium beverage package and a dinner buffet with a series of food stations each with chefs cooking different types of cuisine on the spot. As it is such a gala event, the preferred dress code at the Cairns Amateurs Ball, for both members and guests is Black Tie, with a lounge suit and tie as the minimum requirement for men. Dress standards must be adhered to by all Members and their Guests or entrance may be refused.

When planning your big day there is a lot to take into consideration…..the Bridal Party, the guests, The invitations, hair and beauty, the honeymoon and of course THE dress. Yet, there is one thing that ties all these together….the venue.

CON’S Even though most weddings are planned down to the last minor detail – there is one thing that can affect your special day – Mother

Nature. Sometimes it is best to plan an alternative location in case she

doesn’t get the memo and rains on your parade. Make sure to check on tides and winds as well – as the bride should be the only one swept off her feet. Often you need to check with the council regarding any permits needed to use the beach. This should only be necessary if you are having a large gathering and you want to block off a portion of the beach exclusively for you and your guests. Sometimes there are restrictions on the location as well as the utilities that you can use. Chairs may sink in the sand if you do not rent flooring to place under them. However, if you are planning a “beach blanket” reception, you will not need chairs. Remember your elderly guests though. Plan for their safety and comfort. Make sure your outfit matches the elements – often brides will need to either wear flat or no shoes – you don’t want to be getting your stiletto stuck in the sand every time you take a step! The dress is also something to consider. You will need to keep it simple for a Beach wedding - full length without a train – as often it will collect sand and damage the gown. Hair is also an important factor to consider as often being exposed to the elements can provide a bit of a hassle – so make sure you have hair spray on hand or are prepared for this. Animals and people – Unfortunately the beach is a public place – so you maybe faced with wedding crashers and sticky beaks…. speaking of which, watch out for seagulls, especially when it comes to the food. It is also a good idea to have insect repellent on hand.

KIDSLIFE

Hire For Baby

We all know how much boys love their toys regardless of their age. So when it comes for boys to turn into dads, its time to enter a different realm of toys! During pregnancy, its time to super-size the sound of your coming attraction with the use of a Doppler Foetal Heart Rate Monitor. These noisy toys use the Doppler Effect, similar to a siren, to allow you to hear your unborn baby’s heartbeat using about 3 megahertz of unbridled frequency. On game day, its time to hook the lovely mum-tobe up to a TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) to provide her with some pain relief. This machine uses electrodes stuck to the skin, allowing electric currents in excess of 50hz to pulse up the spine, and can be effective for relieving labour pain.

When its feeding time at the zoo, you can send mum off on her merry way, knowing that you have dinner at hand! Thanks to a dual piston-driven Breast Pump and running on AC, DC or 12volt in the car, the kids will not go hungry on your watch! We’ve even got bedtime covered with vibrating devices and automatic rocking platforms that can be clipped to cots and bassinets to bounce or rock the baby to sleep. Who knew that becoming a father was going to open us up to a whole new world of toys. Now, has anyone considered putting a motor on a pram...

PetLife “Children and Dogs” by Linda Mair of Canine Training School

Operating from Earlville Vet Surgery

There must be no greater memory in life than growing up with a dog. For those of usfortunate enough to have had this opportunity, the life skills of compassion, responsibility and emotional commitment are invaluable. The experience is eternally etched in our mind of the most loyal, understanding, forgiving and affectionate canine companion. Sadly not all children are blessed with this positive experience when interacting with dogs. Every year hundreds of children are injured, hospitalised or in the most severe cases fatally wounded as a result of dog attacks, In many of these cases the offending animal is their own dog or one that is familiar to them. In the dogs mind children are at the bottom of the pack order. There is nothing we can do to alter the dogs perception of this relationship. When children mature and begin to display dominance in their voice and posture they are generally able to assume a role above the dog in the family unit. I believe dogs view children as a slightly different version of a canine puppy. Many dogs like to chase, jump, bite and rough play with children and adults. This type of interaction should be discouraged at all times. It is rare for a child to be bitten without the dog first giving a warning. Unfortunately the child is usually too young to recognise this and often adults ignore or make excuses for the dogs behaviour. Small children should always be supervised when interacting with dogs.Older children should be educated about the importance of safe and respectful handling of dogs. Dogs can display aggressive behaviour towards children for many reasons. Children should never be allowed to disturb a sleeping dog and they should be discouraged from hugging or attempting to sit on a dog. Dogs that are tied up, or restrained in any way should also be left alone. Never leave children alone with dogs that have food a bone or a toy. Not every dog will bite but every dog is CAPABLE of biting a child. There is no greater tragedy than a child being bitten by a dog. The results can be physically and emotiqnally life changing for the victim and their family. The dog may not always be at fault but the consequences can be catastrophic. Educate your family and watch that special bond between your child and their dog evolve. Any questions on canine behaviour can be directed to: info@caninetrainingschool.com.au

Restaurant Review

Iyara by Sakare Thai Cuisine

After receiving a number of positive recommendations from friends, my companion and I were excited to finally experience Iyara Thai Restaurant for ourselves. And we weren’t disappointed. Positioned upstairs at 91 The Esplanade, Iyara is in the heart of the city and all its attractions yet elevated enough to escape the hustle and bustle below. After being greeted at the front door we were escorted up a stairway adorned with tea light candles. Immediately we were impressed with the layout which was spacious yet intimate, featuring warm earthy tones, soft music and tranquil lighting. With a variety of seating options available including a bar area for pre-dinner drinks and comfortable lounge seats with low level tables, we chose to sit outside on the balcony in order to enjoy the spectacular view. As head chef and owner of the restaurant, Sirinee Naiyachit (AKA Sakare) previously made a name for herself in Melbourne with the original Iyara on Toorak Road South Yarra. After featuring in The Age Good Food Guide, she took her recipe for success along with her main chef to explore a new opportunity in Cairns. Now three years on, this hidden gem offers locals and tourists the best that Melbourne has to offer right here on our own doorstep. After being seated in comfortable chairs dressed with vibrant

Wrapped in a betel leaf, this surprisingly powerful morsel combines shrimp, roasted coconut, ginger, peanuts, chilli and fresh lime to deliver an explosion of flavours unlike anything we’ve ever tried before.

We also enjoyed the Iyara Curry Puff and the Som Tum which is a refreshing salad combining green paw paw, grilled prawns, peanuts and cherry tomato dressed in a chilli-lime sauce. While my companion raved about the Kha Moo Tod, a caramelised crispy pork hock infused with a chilli vinegar dressing, my personal favourite was Gaeng Massaman neur, a rich massaman curry of chuck beef, potato, peanut and shallots which was literally a melt-in-themouth experience. Overall, Iyara offers customers a fine dining and unique sensory experience that is equal to the most highly regarded restaurants in town. And while the menu may be on the expensive side, the taste, presentation and service translates to a price many will be willing to pay. So if you do decide to try Iyara for yourself my advice is to be adventurous and you will be rewarded.

WINE & CUISINE

Wine to compliment

Thai cuisine by Krista Hall, ISG Certified Wine Expert www.eatyourcakeandhaveittoo.wordpress.com

A popular cuisine to choose for a night on the town is often Thai. The amazing, fresh, spicy flavours mean a lot of people become intimidated choosing wine to accompany the meal. It can be quite simple if you keep a couple of things in mind. The best pairing is usually a chilled white or a RosĂŠ, but you can grab a red for those who just cannot switch from drinking the red drop. Because Thai food has a lot of complexity with flavours your best bet is to get a simple wine that does not overtake the food, but compliments it instead. Try a white wine that is light and crisp with

WINE & CUISINE

citrus on the palate such as a Riesling for a wine that can pair with almost everything on a Thai menu. For those of you that love spice try a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend. The sweetness of the Semillon will offset the spice, and the Sauvignon Blanc will refresh the palate for your next bite. Don’t worry you red-only wine lovers; you can still enjoy your meal accompanied by a rouge. Select a lighter red such as a Pinot Noir. Avoid a big Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz because it will over power the meal with the big tannins and alcohol content that those varieties carry. These heavier wines accentuate the spice and mute the delicate flavours. A nice inbetween wine is a dry Rosé. A chilled Rosé carries complexity and dryness of a red and will pair perfectly with most Thai dishes. A few wines I’d recommend for you to try are Jim Barry 2009 Rieslings, with nice citrus notes and crisp green apple; it is a great bang for your buck. For something different, I love the 2011 Salsa Rosé GSM (Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro) by Teusner Wines. The Barossa Valley had a wet 2011 vintage but the Grenache that came out of this is interesting and quite different from other years. The Salsa Rosé is dry, spicy with cinnamon and notes of peach and vanilla. It is one of my favourite any-time wines that pairs very well with Thai. Next time you are stuck for a wine to impress your vino-swirling friends or a special someone with a Thai feast, keep these hints in mind and you will impresss like a wine connoisseur. Happy swirling, glass filling, legs sticking, vino drinking!

September signals the beginning of the wonderful spring season in the tropics, with warmer days and nights, school holidays and Father’s Day. It’s a day that tends to sneak up on us and we often find ourselves buying the ‘go-to’ pressies that we know Dad will appreciate – even if it’s new socks… again. EVERT’S LAUNCHES TOLKOWSKY JEWELLERS DIAMOND JEWELLERY COLLECTION

Tolkowsky is a name synonymous with the finest diamonds in the world. Jean Paul Tolkowsky’s collection carries not just the legacy of 200 years’ diamond cutting experience, but a flair and brilliance in design and craftsmanship that is unparalleled. The Tolkowsky collection is now available exclusively at Evert Fine Jewellers, Cairns and Port Douglas. Jean Paul’s designs range from the majestic one carat gold-set solitaires, with delicate pavé stones on the side, to striking pieces where the diamonds appear almost to float aloft 18 carat white gold settings. The launch of Jean Paul’s Tolklowsky collection combines the technical skills of one of the world’s leading diamantaires, with the sophistication and modernity that is Tolkowsky. The Tolkowsky family started making jewellery for the nobility in 1840’s, but very shortly thereafter began to work closely on the technical side of diamond cutting. Marcel Tolkowsky invented the Ideal Cut in 1919 this cut is regarded universally as the supreme cut for a modern round diamond. In 1956, Gabi Tolkowsky followed the family tradition and became a master diamond cutter; he is widely acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest experts. Coming into summer, we all know who the busiest guys in town will be – the air conditioning and refrigeration specialists. Marty Wittebol and Clint Hastie, owners of Alphacool, are certainly looking forward to the challenge. After going into business in one of the toughest times in Cairns’ history, these two young local fathers haven’t looked back – or had time to!

After over 30 years as owner of Placid Pools, Joe Spelta has stood the test of time. A vision that began as rough sketches on serviettes around the dining room table has now materialised into the stunning Smithfield showroom we see today. Although the original driving force, Joe credits the expansion of his business to the contribution of his three children, including son Mark who has recently become a father himself.

We are all being hit by the rising cost of services to daily living in our homes. With some intelligent choices and research we can combat at least some of those costs and reduce the home’s impact on our environment.

Incorporate Energy Efficiency in your new home

Using the best design for your block of land is still the most important factor. This doesn’t mean that it has to be an expensive exercise, just a practical and logical one!! A home that is designed for Sydney or Melbourne, or even Brisbane, is not necessarily going to be the best for our climate here in North Queensland. Issues such as; orientation on the land; where the cool breezes will come from in summer; where the sun is located in summer and winter; exposure to elements during extreme conditions; cross breezes for natural ventilation; suitable materials for energy efficiency and many more factors will make a lot of difference on the comfortable living in your home. Its not an easy exercise weighing up the initial costs of some inclusions against the future running costs.

(Roslyn is a building designer and licensed builder QBSA 533314

We tend to live an outdoor lifestyle so having suitable external living areas should be of high importance. Air conditioning is something that we are becoming more accustomed to in the tropics. If we design the home efficiently then we can reduce the amount of time we need to run them, and when we do, we should be running them at the recommended temperature of 25 degrees. Roof and ceiling insulation, reflective colours, tinted glass, good shade, solar power, gas cooking and hot water, efficient lighting and power options; a higher pitched roof and good sized overhangs are all elements of your design that will reduce those running costs. My advice to clients is to maximise your value for money, so maybe spend a few extra dollars on some energy saving features rather than having the largest home available. Remember that ‘bigger doesn’t always mean better’ but it will increase the running costs of your home. With costs of power ever increasing that’s good start on future savings. There are many of these ideas can be achieved with a builder’s standard model plan or an individual home design. You will need to do some of this research yourself so that when you are talking to your builder/designer you can determine whether or not they are experienced in energy efficiency in home design or simply selling you a house. Then you can sit back, relax and enjoy your new home knowing that you have taken advantage of all the options available to you.

Ensure your pool area is Safe- confirm your pool is registered, check fencing hatches are closing automatically, ensure you Pool Safety sign is visible and easy to read (or you might need to upgrade if it is faded by the sun- a new Safety Signs normally cost between $10-$25)

Water Chemistry is often neglected during the winter months. Just because the water looks good, it doesn’t necessary mean that the water quality is fit for swimming in. With summer just around the corner now is the time to give your pool some TLC.

Book the kids in for swimming lessons if they aren’t confident with the water
