Come along and see Andy Allens Cooking Demo Andy’s current job as an apprentice electrician does not inspire him like food does. He is at a cross roads in his career and hopes that MasterChef will help to give him a new sense of direction. “I don’t want to continue being an electrician, I am in love with all things food.” Incredibly close to his family, Andy lives at home with his mum and dad - neither of whom he says are great in the kitchen - so he does most of the cooking. Andy says he taught himself to cook through hours spent watching the food channel but most of his earliest food memories involve fishing with his family and cooking up the catch!

“For Mum’s 50th, Dad and I caught some whiting and cooked them up for all Mum’s friends and family.” More recently Andy has done dinner parties for friends but says he has really only started to take cooking seriously in the last two or three years. He loves to cook with seafood . especially if he has caught it – as well as Spanish style tapas dishes and anything Mediterranean. “My mates used to eat rubbish food but I think now because of me they are all trying new things and buying good produce.” Andy’s proudest food moment was when he was asked to cater for a friend’s wedding - which he did, for

90 guests. As well as cooking, Andy is a great sportsman and has played basketball for Australia. He describes himself as “laidback’, an “entertainer” but “super competitive” Andy readily admits his inexperience with desserts and baking and limited knowledge of techniques are his weaknesses - and that he is not a risk taker in the kitchen. Despite this, it was his Peach Melba for Shannon Bennet that won him his place in the Top 24. Andy dreams of travelling the world and immersing himself in the food of other cultures. His favourite chef is Jamie Oliver.

Until recently, Seongok was a single mother to her son and daughter, and for the duration of their childhood, had only herself to rely on. “I worked from 9am till 3pm and dedicated the rest of my time to my children, says Seongok, whose children are now 24 and 25. Seongok’s daughter, Jamie, says that her mum is an inspiration. “Even though she was a single mum and ran multiple businesses, she was always there to pick us up from school and take us to sport and music lessons, remembers Jamie. “She has taught us to be strong and independent and to follow our hearts. Seongok’s message for mums on Mother’s Day is, “Remember what’s most important to you. For me, it’s my children. Even though Seongok has found success as a business owner, she says that she is happy for her children to do whatever makes them happy. “I always tell my children, don’t chase money. Follow your heart, enjoy what you’re doing and money will follow you.

“Hot Fuzz” Great Wheelbarrow Race by Kate van Eck

While racing 149 kilometers pushing a wheel barrow may sound a little crazy, Sergeant Geoff Stockall is literally taking it all in his stride. Now celebrating it’s 10th anniversary, the Great Wheelbarrow Race from Mareeba to Chilligoe has grown to attract more than 450 entrants annually and raised $124,000 for local charities last year alone. And as part of the Cairns-based team “Hot Fuzz”, Geoff is now preparing to tackle this amazing fundraising challenge for the third year running. Originally a spectator when his wife began competing in the event a few years ago, Geoff was inspired to get involved and set about forming his own team. And while the concept is certainly unusual – he says it was born out of respect for a bygone era. “The idea behind travelling from Mareeba to Chilligoe was to pay homage to the pioneers of yesteryear who used to travel on what’s now known as the “Wheelbarrow Way” – pushing wheelbarrows

with all their equipment to mine at Chilligoe,” he says. The three-day event beginning in Mareeba on May 17th is a physically demanding race where each team member pushes the wheelbarrow for a designated time before alternating. “There are also some solo and duo runners each year so the other teams offer as much support to them as they can,” says Geoff. Overall, he

says it’s a fun, social event that’s grown from 15 teams to 55 last year. “There’s even a fancy dress component at the start where the teams parade through Mareeba with the locals cheering us on.” Consisting of ten runners and a support crew of five, the “Hot Fuzz” team includes police officers, a customs dog handler, a teacher and a marketing manager. “It’s a group formed

through work, family and friendships,” Geoff says. Fellow team member Jana Stankovich says the race is fast becoming an attraction, with travel agents down south including it as one of the calendar events of the region. “We hope to raise as much money as possible for our cause and at the same time continue to create awareness for the race and encourage people in Cairns to come up and support this event.” With each team nominating a charity, “Hot Fuzz” is competing on behalf of the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program. “The program caters to Year 11 and 12 students – educating them about road safety in the effort to reduce the road toll in Far North Queensland,” says Geoff. After raising $1800 for Police Legacy last year, they have now raised the bar even higher with a goal of $5000 this year. Not willing to give too much away Geoff says Hot Fuzz has devised a speedy race tactic and says that anyone wishing to support their effort with either money or merchandise can contact him on 4030 7206 or email: stocky7600@hotmail.com For more details on the Great Wheelbarrow Race visit; greatwheelbarrowrace.com

MOTHER’S DAY m o m e n t s

Even though we all adore our mum, Mother’s Day encourages Every year, on the second Sunday of May, Australians celebrate and honour mothers and motherhood, mothers in society. We all have varying traditions and ideas about how best to celebrate our mum, but this year - as well as spoiling her rotten- lets’ get creative and support local businesses in the process. Although breakfast in bed is a nice treat- why not surprise mum with breakfast or brunch at one of Cairns’ many cafÊ’s, or a long, luxurious lunch overlooking the esplanade or ocean. Treat her to a decadent dinner or a sunset cruise on the Trinity Inlet.

the local markets or present her with a hamper of fresh, local produce. If you want something for the whole family to enjoy, bring her along to the Cairns Lifestyle Expo at the Convention day. With no less than 120 exhibitors, mum is sure to have a memorable day browsing the various stalls and taking in the attractions. Whatever Mother’s Day moments you decide to create this year, ensure you remind mum how much she means to means to you. Telling her how much you love her is certainly not something you should ‘keep mum’. “Happy Mother’s Day, from the team at CairnsLife.

Foor most Au ustralia ustralian music lo overs, James Vaalentine requires no introduction. He was, after all, a member of legendary art-rock heroes The Models, and of that band’s later spin-offf, Absent Frriends. He’s played with Kate Ceberano, Wend e y Matthews, and Joe Camilleri, among many others, and foor years now $#"! !$ "! ! # ! Oh yes, he’s also been a familiar voice on ABC radio for o more than a decade. His self-introduction, via his own website pretty much says it all: “Broadcasterr. Musician. Writerr. Not In Maroon 5.â€? It will at least disabuse anyone of the notion that turning up to see the James Vaalentine Quartet’s show at Tanks a Arts Centre on Frriday 17 May will yield a version of the American group’s hit songs. Although what they will hearr, in one sense, will not be a million miles away from that sort of pop-culture material. James Vaalentine’s show, called The Power ! $ ! #"" ! "! $ ! # ! $ "! " ! ! ! "!# ! " ! $ ! "! ! $ !" " !" "!# ! eighties were not, in the main, big jazz fans – and a lot of jazz musicians haave largely ignored rock music. I saw an opportunity in that situation. In essence there’s this whole body of material lying around left unexplored by serious jazz musos. Many of these songs – by bands such as Cold Chisel, The Divinyls and Midnight Oil – have great melodic shapes. It’s really interesting to be able to bring out the other colours in them.â€? Since hitting on the idea foor The Power And The Passion a few years ago, the show has grown considerablyy. It began as a jazz quartet doing a bunch of pubrock covers. Toda o y it’s more of a full-bodied experience. The perffoor mers are backed by projections of stunning original photographs of the great bands in their prime, taken byy Australian music snapper Ton o y Mott. James also provvides considered and witty inter-song patterr, exploring the cultural context of the pub rock era. “The thing about that period – say, roughlyy, 1960 to 1990 – is that mainstream pop culture consisted sted overwhelmingly of Australian musicians writing about Australia,â€? he says. “Australian music was hugely popular opular l r. Yoou kknow, you had bands like Sherbet and Skyhooks which might have been a bit derivative in their songwriting style, but nevertheless did it in a uniquely niquely Au ustralian way. Ju ust think of the Skyhooks song, ‘Ballwyn w Calling’‌ Even n artists like the Ted e Mulry u In My Car – how Au ussie is that? There are heaps of Gang were part of it. HARK, JUNE 30 IS APPROACHING AND SUPER IS “A CHANGIN

What should you do?

Answer – Meet with your Accountant or Financial Planner. Maybe not everyone; but if you’re self-employed or have a desire to minimise tax then this should be an annual event every April – May – June. What are some basic options that you may be able to do? (This list is limited, which is why it is essential that you meet with a professional to discuss your individual needs). ! Boost your spouse’s super and reduces tax (if your spouse earns less than $13,800 pa). ! Get a super contribution top up from the government (if you earn less than $61,920 pa). ! ! Pre-pay investment loan interest a year in advance. ! Pre-pay income protection insurance. ! Borrow to invest. ! Unlock your super while you are still working (for the over 55’s). As you can see many of these options are using current strategies available within super. The recent announced changes to super has created doubt over the superannuation as the retirement vehicle. Let’s consider the facts! The changes announced on 5th April 2013 are proposed only and not in place. They probably won’t be in place before the September election. There are 7 key reforms! (' &%$#"! There is nothing more amusing than watching two dogs play. The enjoyment they get from the company of their own kind is obvious, just as nature intended. In the domestic environment it is not always the most harmonious of relationships. In some instances dogs that live together may engage in serious displays of aggression. Challenges may arise over things such as food, toys or attention. This behaviour is not only very unnerving but can be extremely dangerous for owners who may try to intervene. Equality does not exist in the canine world. Dogs structure their lives around the hierarchical order of every member of their pack which also includes their owners. Individual positions are determined by a number of factors such as age, sex and genetic dominance. It is important that we have a clear understanding of generally indicates instability in the pack structure. Dogs may behave aggressively towards each other in the company of one person but be completely amicable

when around another member of the family. Often people are unaware of the importance of establishing a calm and controlled relationship with all of their dogs. In many instances owners may be favouring the lower ranking dog therefore causing the more dominant dog to react with aggression. In the canine world the highest ranking member is the attention before all others. Owners should hold these top positions and then each dog should be recognised and consistently acknowledged according to their position in this structure. In most cases it is possible to eliminate this behaviour

restoring balance and harmony. In severe cases dogs may engage in displays of aggression even when left alone. This is the most dangerous form of sibling rivalry. These dogs are generally very similar in genetic dominance and will not relinquish their position in the pack. Although this type of behaviour is rare, it is best resolved by either permanently containing the dogs in separate areas or by rehoming one of the dogs. Any displays of aggression should be taken seriously, always seek professional advice. The Palm Cove jetty is one of the region’s most popular fishing spots where anglers regularly catch Giant Trevally and Mackerel. FEDERAL

TYRES C A I R N S By Josie Rose

“Where’d-ya-get-it? Federal Tyres mate, Federal Tyres” - The new slogan on every ones lips in FNQ. Ben Mitchell and Rick Lee are not your average business owners. They may be extreme and unorthodox but they recognise the need for great service and say that the most important aspect of their business is the customer, and that every sale is an advertisement. Ben and Rick have united their families, cultures and skills to create a respected tyre business, and at Federal Tyres Cairns, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover that shopping for tyres is actually an entertaining experience. These self-confessed “FEDERAL fruit-loop boys” are larger than life, friendly and dedicated; qualities which they credit to the businesses success. The dynamic duo is known for their entertaining radio ads on Hot FM such as, “We’re the best, forget the rest”, and, “Where’d-ya-get-it? Federal Tyres mate, Federal Tyres”, even attracting the attention of Hamish and Andy. “They heard our ‘pig add’ on their road trip to Tully and loved it so much that they gave Federal Tyres Cairns a nationwide radio plug.” Ben Mitchell is a colourful Cairns local with strong ties to his Torres Strait Islander heritage and noteworthy family values. 3 Years ago, Ben’s long-time friend, charismatic motor mechanic Rick, offered Ben the opportunity to become his business partner in a new venture in association with a mainstream national tyre company. Today, customers tell Ben and Rick that Federal Tyres are the best tyres on the market, with customers getting up to 70,000 kilometres out of Federal mud tyres. Formerly Cairns Motors, Federal Tyres is located at 207 and 219 Scott Street and has become a trusted name in everything mechanical. The engine rebuild specialists/ diesel mechanics offer services, mags, tyres and all things mechanical for cars to light trucks, now specialising in 4WD tyres, Federal and Mickey Thompson tyres, with Toyo Tyres a recent addition. When Ben and Rick first approached Mickey Thompson to become their premium seller for North Queensland, they were turned down, but after out-selling their competition with the Federal Tyre brand, Mickey Thompson took notice of their successful selling methods and thriving business, and jumped on board. Ben and Rick offer a 100% lifetime guarantee with Federal Tyres, but say that people are still influenced by the marketing tactics of inferior tyre brands. “Inferior tyres at cheaper prices are a concern throughout the industry. For generations, BFG tyres have been viewed as the best 4WD tyres, but, due to the technology behind Federal Tyres, Federal is gaining a reputation as a far superior product at a reasonable price.” With over $1,000, 000 in stock on hand in Cairns, Federal Tyres Cairns can assure customers they have the tyre you want without the long waiting periods. Federal Tyres can be purchased throughout all Australian states at various participating agencies, but Ben and Rick own the only complete Federal Tyre shop in Australia and have recently opened a shop in Gordonvale, with shops in both Atherton and Weipa opening soon. For an experience that’s far from ‘tyring’, trust in Federal Tyres Cairns for all your automotive and tyre needs, and enjoy a laugh or two along the way.

Cairns may not experience serious, scarf-worthy winter weather, but even the slight drop in temperature can affect skin, health, hair and weight. With the approach of the cooler months, here are some tips to keep you looking and feeling your best. • Drink more water- We often remember to re-hydrate in a hot climate, but drinking plenty of water is just as important during winter. Hydrated skin starts from within. • Moisturise- The cooler weather can cause skin to dry out and flake, so remember to moisturise from head to toe every day. •Use a leave in conditioner- To avoid dull, dry and lacklustre locks, opt for a moisturising leave-in conditioner to maintain the heath and shine of your hair. • Use sunscreen- Just because the sun doesn’t feel as harsh during winter, doesn’t mean it’s not causing damage to the skin. In fact, UV rays can be just as severe and damaging on a sunny day as an overcast day. • Vitamin D- Sunlight is a vital source of Vitamin D. Deficiency in Vitamin D can result in brittle bones and a weakened immune system. Sunlight is not as abundant in winter, so remember to soak up a few precious rays when possible. • Eat well- Winter is synonymous with comfort food, but over-indulging in heavy, fatty treats will result in weight gain. A well-balanced and nutritious diet is vital all year round. • Flu shot- Avoid and help prevent the spread of colds and Flu. Talk to your GP about getting a Flu shot this winter. • Exercise- Maintaining a regular exercise regime throughout the cooler months helps keep the body strong and healthy, and will ensure you feel great about getting back into your beach-wear come summer.

PROPERTY STANDS THE TEST OF TIME

T

he May Theme of “Women in Business” got me thinking about my clients’ relationships – between men and women – when looking at investments. I think this is best summed up in a Hollywood film that once said, “Men might be the head of the family, but women are the neck.” Certainly in my experience, women are the decision makers, and I don’t mind admitting, often the place where most logic is found! Investor Property’s finance broker Michelle Davies (Frosty to her mates) is the go-to person when

logic and decision making is required. She took some time out to chat to me recently.

Frosty: Yes, I’m proud to say I purchased my first home at 19.

DZ: So Frosty, being a finance broker must keep you busy.

DZ: I love the photo of you and Isabella - where were you off to?

Frosty: Yes it certainly does, especially when I have a 13 month old girl (Isabella) and a husband to look after. I’m not sure who takes up more of my energy!

Frosty: Melbourne Cup lunch. You’ve got to make time for fun. Life’s too short.

DZ: Wow, that’s impressive. So what do you do to unwind? Frosty: Actually, I love a good game of footy. I’m a Swans supporter, even though I’ve been on the Sunshine Coast for eight years. DZ: Yep, you’re certainly marriage material. That’s one clever guy that nabbed you! Frosty: Yes he is, not to mention a successful financial advisor. DZ: So do you have an interest in property?

DZ: Yep, marriage material alright!

DZ: Thanks for your time Michelle, any parting advice for budding Investors? Frosty: Always go with your gut. If it doesn’t feel right then it’s not for you. Never invest if you are not 100% sure. That’s what I love about what we do – making sure our clients understand their cash-flows BEFORE they become investors is critical, and surrounding yourself with a winning team! Investor Property will be at the Cairns Life and Home Expo May 11th and 12th. See you there or call me for a coffee and a chat.

Last year we presented insight into a property topic of interest for an article on the perception of market values in the Cairns region beffor o e and after the GFC. We have decided to add to this due to response and interest from various people follo o wing the property cycle in the Cairns region. There is a general market perception that property values are now substantially lower compared to bef effoore the GFC. Howeverr, it is important to remember that the property market works in a cycle with peaks and rising markets and troughs and falling markets. If people are comparing property values now with values at the rise and peak of the market in 2006 to 2008, then there is a very likely possibility that they will be lower. Howeverr, if we look a bit further back in

Home Building

Building a new home …it’s your choice Are you deciding whether to build a brand new home or buy an existing home? It’s all about choices. When you build a home you choose the location, you choose the design, you choose the inclusions and level of finish, you choose the colour scheme and you can choose your own builder. In return you get a brand new home personalised to you and your family’s needs and tastes. You should be comfortable with the person you deal with for all of these choices. The builder you select should have the experience and back up of a well respected building brand and proven longevity in the building industry in North Queensland, especially to deal with cyclonic requirements and accurate estimating. You can do a little research through industry bodies, previous clients

and even friends who have built before. Once you’ve decided on which block of land to purchase consider the layout and design of your new home, as this is extremely important. It can make the difference for you being excited to come home each day and enjoying the lifestyle your new home offers. It can also make a difference in your home’s running costs, amount of maintenance needed over the years and ultimately the selling price of your home in the future. A knowledgeable builder will be able to work within your budget to give you numerous options for your new home. Think twice if a builder is dictating to you what and where you can build. Choose a builder that will advise you on your options and then let’s you make the choice. Choices can be

restricted by availability of materials, the best aspect of the land, suitability to our climate, and of course by budget. Your builder will guide you through the process and work with you to get the best value for money whether you’re a first home owner on tight budget or you’re upgrading to a larger home. Remember it’s your choice and you get to decide what you want to include and what you are happy to compromise on. Having said all this, you do need to do some research as to what you like and don’t like. You will probably need to be flexible on some of your inclusions and respect that certain inclusions will cost more than others. It’s your choice where you spend you money.

Happy Building!
