The Face of Cairns Central

Elyse Miller While many 13-year-old girls are focused on school, clothes and boys, Elyse Miller has the future clearly on her mind. Recently crowned ‘The Face of Cairns Central’, this talented young woman has taken a huge step towards achieving her dream of becoming a professional model. Over the next twelve months Elyse will feature in catalogues and various other marketing campaigns as the centre continues it’s mission to support undiscovered local talent. by Kate van Eck Originally from Cairns, Elyse is equally at home on the catwalk as she is on the lime farm in Dimbulah where she currently lives with her younger brothers and sister. Currently in Grade 8 at St. Stephen’s Catholic College in Mareeba, she already has her dream career mapped out and is well on the way to making it a reality. “Last year I really wanted to do some modelling and thought ‘The Face of Cairns Central’ was a good place to start,” Elyse says. “I never expected to win anything but just wanted to feel the rush of being up in front of everybody.” After winning Most Photographic in her age group, Elyse went on to pursue modelling work with Sonlia Boutique before completing a course at LuLu’s Model Management. “I signed with LuLu’s and had my first modelling job in the Garden Party Fashion Parade at the Cairns Amateurs,” Elyse says. “Being with LuLu’s gave me more inspiration to follow my dream and that led to me joining the Face of Cairns Central 2012.” Despite strong competition and no expectations of winning, Elyse’s decision paid off when she was awarded the title. “The opportunity given to me is just incredible – when my name was called out I felt in a daze.” Run in partnership with local agency LuLu’s Model Management and the nationally renowned Dallys Model Management, the competition evaluates contestants on their

appearance, confidence on the catwalk and photographic presence. And according to Marketing Manager of Cairns Central, Louise Struber, Elyse certainly has the ‘X’ Factor. “She is beautiful on the inside and out, very confidant and has an uncanny resemblance to supermodel Megan Gale,” Louise says. “She has a big future ahead of her and we are very excited to have her as our ‘Face of Cairns Central’.” And if the past is anything to by, Elyse could be on the path to bigger and better things, with a number of previous contestants making names for themselves in the industry. “2007 winner Kazzy Zandt went on to be a finalist on Channel Seven’s ‘Make Me A Supermodel’ and was a National Finalist at ‘Fashion TV’s Diamond Model Awards’,” Louise says. “It’s a unique opportunity for fresh-faced local talent to launch a modeling career and also allows us to localise Cairns Central’s advertising and further connect with our customers.” While Elyse certainly appears to be living her dream, she is also mindful of the importance of education. ”In the future I want to model; however, I DO want to finish school,” she says. In the meantime she is excited about the year ahead and determined to take her role very seriously. “I really want to do Cairns Central justice,” she says. “I have always looked up to previous people who have won the title and so hoped that someday that was going to be me.”

Some are small, some are big, some are new and others have been around for years. But what all these Cairns businesses have in common are their FAMILY TIES. This month Cair nsLife writers Kate van Eck and Michelle Walkden explore how these family members strike a balance between successful businesses and their equally successful homes lives.

Tami Shervey and Kerrie Jackson Face Today Mediclinic

Famil y values are in the Face Today DNA

by Michelle Walkden “We’re like one big happy family,” is how many businesses describe themselves, referring to the values of trust, loyalty and friendship. It’s a phrase that rings true as soon as you step in to Face Today Mediclinic. With three generations of Jacksons playing a role in the business, you could say it’s in their DNA. Nicki Belle set up the non-surgical cosmetics clinic five years ago driven by the desire to put a long-held dream of working with her sisters into practice. She had been flying monthly between Sydney and Cairns to visit family and treat patients at an established clinic. After setting up a successful business in the NSW capital it was logical to do the same in Cairns.

Sister Kerie Jackson explains: “The main reason, well the only reason really, was to get the whole family together. It really was a dream come true.”

keeping her sisters in line from the reception desk. Kim has since moved on to other challenges but continues her “labour of love” popping in to help out as needed.

It’s a pattern that has been repeated over four decades. “We tend to move as a pack,” Kerrie says light heartedly, explaining family members have relocated to Papua New Guinea, Sydney, Perth and MacKay, always with one relative (or more) in tow.

Mum Myra, who helped Nicki set up her Sydney business and is running the project to move the current clinic to Sheridan Street, and Kerrie’s daughter Tami Shervey, who has progressed from PR and reception duties to managerial responsibilities, make up the three generations.

And if that’s not enough to prove the family bond, Kerie, Nicki and mum Myra all did their nursing training together! Face Today Mediclinic opened with Nicki, Kerrie and sister Kim providing treatments. The following year Fran, the fourth sibling, joined the team

“Whenever a patient finds out we are all related they are surprised. They tell us there is no way they could work with their sister or niece,” Tami says. “But it makes them feel more secure, knowing we are a family and have that ethic of respect and honesty.”

11 I CairnsLife

It’s a philosophy the Jacksons take to heart. “We would never offer a treatment we wouldn’t give to our own sister,” Kerrie explains. “When new treatments are available we try them out first to see if they deliver results and see if different treatments work together well. That’s important to us.” The family nature of Face Today Mediclinic is genuine, and includes the patients. As Kerrie says: “We feel good about what we do, and want out patients to feel good too. We tend to adopt them, we want them to be happy.”

Status Plus

“Celebrating 30 years in Business”

by Kate van Eck As the name suggests, Status Plus is renowned for providing the people of the tropical north with the most prestigious, cutting-edge home renovation appliances available. With nearly three decades in the industry, this leading family-owned and operated business has undergone an evolution over the years to become the award-winning showroom we see today. Current owner Ashley Balderson, who took over the reigns from his mother Carolyn in 2005, continues the same recipe for success while taking the business to a whole new level. Originally established by Carolyn Balderson in 1983, Status Plus satisfied a niche in the market by providing the growing population of Cairns with high performance, long-lasting European appliances from quality brands such as Miele, Gaggenau, Jennair and Bosch. Carolyn’s decision to combine state-of-the-art products together with an old-world

buying experience, lead to the business’s rapid success – which comes as no surprise to son Ashley. “Women are the best administrators and organisers hands down,” he says. “Their attention to detail is unequalled.” Born and raised in Cairns, Ashley attended school at Saint Augustine’s College and later Nudgee Boarding School in Brisbane. After completing two years of a civil engineering degree and two years of a surveying degree, he then spent six months overseas before finally taking his place in the family business in 1992. “I never finished either degree – so I guess I am day by day working towards graduating the ‘school of life’,” he laughs. After working in the window & door division, accounts, sales and finally management, he was eventually presented with the opportunity to purchase the business in 2000. Operating six days a week from their impressive 1,100m2 showroom at 51 Anderson

Street, Status Plus has cemented its reputation as a supplier of the highest quality brands and has recently branched out into luxury bathroom supplies. By continually updating and redesigning their store to reflect current trends, Ashley and his staff service both individual renovators right through to the region’s leading builders and architects. “We believe in our team and putting the client’s needs ahead of everything – to go above and beyond and deliver more than is expected at every opportunity,” Ashley says. He also credits his mum Carolyn with teaching him the importance of “being honest, learning from your mistakes and above all else keeping your word.” With an impressive family history dating back to 1953 (his maternal grandfather was Mayor Colin Penridge and his paternal grandfather, Colin Balderson was the Police inspector of Cairns) Ashley is a proud Cairns local through

and through. “I love the people, the place and working here,” he says. He is also an avid supporter of the community, sponsoring a variety of local causes including Guide Dogs Qld., The Mayor’s Charity Appeal, Harold’s House and a number of school fundraisers and local sporting teams. And, after the loss of his father in 1987, the Leukemia Foundation is also a cause very close to his heart. Now looking forward to celebrating the 30th birthday of Status Plus next year, Ashley plans to expand the business to Townsville, Mackay, Darwin and Gladstone. And on a personal level he has even more cause to celebrate. After recently becoming engaged he says he’s also looking forward to starting a family in the near future. The Kennedy’s Kennedy’s Retravision

“Ser vicing Cair ns for close to a centur y”

by Kate van Eck Originally operated from a pushbike in the late 1920’s, Kennedy’s Retravision has grown to become the professional, multi-faceted business we know today. Now specialising in a range of services including sales, spare parts, repairs and more recently rentals, it is one of only a few local businesses that’s been part of the Cairns landscape for close to a century. As a third generation family member, Store Manager Janelle Given cleverly combines a forward thinking approach with the old fashioned values the business is famous for. Established by Janelle’s grandfather Horrie Kennedy in 1929, Kennedy’s began as a mobile electrical services business. After taking over the business from his boss on completing an apprenticeship, Horrie went on to play an important role in the history of the far north.” My grandfather initially conducted the majority of electrical contracting for the

Port Moresby Hospital, Bolands Centre in the heart of Cairns, local movie theatres and properties such as Hides Hotel,” Janelle says. “So we were certainly one of the pioneers in the development of Cairns.” While Janelle didn’t grow up with a “burning desire” to join the business, as time went by she recognised the importance of her family legacy. After moving to Brisbane to study she eventually returned to Cairns to undertake a traineeship at Kennedy’s before later opening up an independent computer division with her mother Leonie. “My passion for the business started then because it was something I had actually developed,” Janelle says. “When I began to appreciate the history and reputation behind the business I realised I really did want to sit in this chair,” she laughs. While the business is certainly a family affair with Janelle’s

father Bill overseeing the entire company’s divisions and her sister Amanda the Administration Manager, the decision to become aligned with Retravision in the 1980’s enabled them more buying power. Their continual expansion has also seen them recently move into both solar and rentals. “Everyone wants to become more energy efficient and save on costs so we recognised the need to diversify,” Janelle says. “And with the high cost of living, we needed to address this and provide a service for our clients where they are able to rent appliances rather than buy outright”. In terms of Kennedy’s longevity, Janelle says “it’s customer service hands-down!” With many employees having family members within the business, they recognise the importance of being flexible and upholding family values. “There’s no hierarchy or corporatisation – just

14 I CairnsLife

old-fashioned service,” she says. “While we’re always looking for different ventures, first and foremost people want bricks and mortar – they want to deal with someone face to face.” A tight knit group both in and out of the office, the Kennedys hold an annual family fishing event and regular trivia nights. They’re also heavily involved in sporting and community events, including a Charity Golf Day conducted by Janelle to raise funds for the Dr Edward Koch Foundation for the awareness and prevention of youth suicide. “The people of Cairns have supported us over the years so we always like to give back where we can,” Janelle says. In the meantime her plans for the future are clear. “We’re 83 now and my goal is to get us to 100 – which may be up to my kids,” she laughs. Anna and Paul La Fontaine Pandanus Gallery

Drawing on each other

by Michelle Walkden Anna and Paul La Fontaine owe their family business in part to their own families. As children they fell in love with Aboriginal art, little knowing that a chance holiday to Palm Cove five decades later would set them on the path to opening their own gallery. The La Fontaines have been married for 43 years and it shows in the way they quickly turn the spotlight on one another – Paul talking about Anna’s instinct for aesthetics and Anna highlighting Paul’s deep interest in the spiritual and cultural side of indigenous life. Despite this shared appreciation of the work of Aboriginal artists, it wasn’t until 1991 that the couple got a taste for their future career. “When we started our first family business (a

management development company) Aboriginal art was just starting to be popular,” Anna explains. “The government had set up shops to sell the work but they didn’t work out. The pieces went to auction and we ended up decorating the office in Aboriginal art. There’s where it all started.” It took another 11 years before the seeds of the business were sown. “There was a three-line ad about Palm Cove in the travel section of the Sydney paper, so we came up for a holiday, sight unseen,” Anna says. “As soon as the taxi turned into Williams Esplanade I said, ‘Wow, it’s gorgeous’, and we pretty much started talking then and there about how to engineer a way of moving here.” Pandanus Gallery was born.

The narrow space in the landmark Beach Club complex is far from the cluttered tourist shops filled with mass produced didgeridoos and ochre-coloured scarves with dot-design kangaroos. Instead, the walls hold a collection of traditional and more contemporary artworks created in a range of mediums.

to point out the gallery is not just about sales, but education. “When we sell a piece of art it’s not just the object itself but an understanding of why it exists as a representation of the culture, the spirituality, and the aesthetic level. People might come in for a keepsake of their trip but they leave with something that has a profound impact.”

“Artists are finding us now,” Paul says, explaining their access to high-quality pieces. “Aboriginal art centres throughout Australia have learned of us and we represent a few individuals who wish to retain their independence. We have earned a reputation for having high-quality works and that brings artists to us.”

It’s this combination, the visual and the unseen, that makes this family business work.

As the “spiritual” guardian of the business, Paul is eager

When the big ‘O’

is a big

This month’s column is not one for the faint-hearted!

“Only the united beat of sex and heart together can create ecstasy.” Anais Nin

For some women, sex is not a pleasurable experience - it is associated with mild to extreme pain in or around the genitals. It can be heart breaking and frustrating for all those involved. The experience of pain during sex affects up to 14% of women (according to Sexual Health Australia). Sensation can include burning, stinging, rawness or tightness. For those women who do feel pain or discomfort during sex or a resulting inability to have sex at all - you’re not alone and it’s not your fault. Painful Sex - What is it? There are a number of potential conditions that may be causing pain. Terms such as Vulvodynia, Vaginismus, Dyspareunia, Vestibulitis may be applied as an explanation though these can be confusing and don’t very helpful. Here is my simplest explanation of the terms: Vulvodynia - pain around the vulva. Vestibulitis, vestibulodynia or vulvar vestibulitis - pain just outside the vagina. Vaginismus - tightening of the vagina causing pain. These all fall into the category of non-medical sexual pain. Dr Pacik of www.vaginismusmd.com explains. “Currently, the default diagnosis of sexual pain is vulvodynia. That means that when a physician is faced with a patient who is unable to have intercourse because of pain, the diagnosis is automatically vulvodynia or “vestibulitis” Very few clinicians think of asking about vaginismus and therefore most of my patients have been misdiagnosed as suffering from vulvodynia, when in actual fact the correct diagnosis was vaginismus.”

Vaginismus or Vulvodynia - What causes it? Often, there may not be an ‘obvious’ cause at all which can be frustrating to sufferers and their partners. A number of things however can contribute to the painful experience including fears around sex, or of pain, stress, anxiety, past traumatic events in regard to sexuality. Physical medical conditions like yeast infections, urinary tract infections, endometriosis or others may be a factor also. Painful sex - How can I fix it? You don’t need to suffer with painful sex. Treatment options are available. Make sure that it’s not a physical medical condition and have yourself tested for yeast and bacterial infections as well as sexually transmitted diseases. There are a number of medical treatments available including botox injections into the vulva area. I would prefer to use non-invasive, long-term solutions that address the cause as well as the symptoms. Somatic sex therapy offers effective, holistic treatments for many painful sex conditions. In sessions you will be safely guided and supported to explore what the underlying causes may be and address those gently. Together we can use mindfulness or relaxation techniques to help relax the mind (and the pelvis) to reduce the experience of pain. We can also give you ‘homework’ to help retrain the mind and nervous system to have positive sexual experiences. You don’t need to suffer. And your relationship doesn’t need to either. If you’re experiencing pain during sex - seek help.

Tops Tips for Spicing up your Life: Schedule time for sex: Work out when you both enjoy doing it and make sure there will be no interruptions. You might need to stay in a hotel or ship the kids off to Grandma’s once a week! Enjoy the warmer weather: Try sex outdoors this month for some cheeky fun! Read a bedtime story: Grab your copy of 50 Shades of Grey and read your favourite bits to each other!

Solutions will never succeed in business, we will believe it. So my job is to get to the core belief and turn it around so that people can live a successful, healthy, and balanced life. People ask if I will put them to sleep when they come to see me. My response is to explain that Hypnosis is a safe and non-invasive process. Everyone hypnotises themselves every day. When we drive, watch TV or daydream we put ourselves into a relaxed trance state. It’s that simple. During your session you hear everything that is going on and there is nothing I can ‘make’ you do if it is against your moral code. A major part of my business is helping people with weight and body issues. WATER WORKS PROBLEMS While the month of November is usually associated with Prostate Cancer and fund raising through the “Movember” program, it is important to remember that prostate cancer is not the only thing that can cause problems with “water works”.

Welcome to

Cairns Urology Awareness and early detection is the key to prevention and treatment. This clinic provides a full range of Urological services with extensive equipment enabling us to perform procedures here or through the Day Surgery, whereas patients previously required hospitalisation. This is not only more convenient for our patients but is often at considerable cost savings. 98 Spence Street Cairns, QLD 4870, Australia

PO Box 7787 Cairns, QLD 4870, Australia

In fact, prostate cancer may not cause any symptoms at all because the majority of prostate cancers occur around the back of the prostate and do not squeeze the pipe to affect the ability to empty the bladder. Benign (non-cancerous) prostate enlargement occurs as men get older. As the prostate presses on the pipe (urethra) it results in the man having to wait for it to start, having a slow stream which is not steady and a delay in shutting off leading to dripping at the end. This can mean that the bladder does not empty completely and he then has to go more often. That is, if the bladder only half empties the he will go twice as often. Occasionally, urination may stop completely and need to be relieved by the insertion of a catheter.

review of “natural medications” such as Saw Palmetto published in the British Journal of Urology International failed to show any benefit. Surgery can be carried out where the obstructing tissue is removed by passing a telescope through the pipe to “make the hole in the donut bigger”. This is sometimes referred to as a “re-bore” or Trans Urethral Resection of Prostate (TURP) and can be carried out as day surgery so the patient does not need to stay in hospital. After such a procedure routine follow up is required as there is a small but recognised risk that prostate cancer can develop later in the remaining prostate tissue. A complete prostate removal is a more major procedure that is only perfor med for certain men with certain prostate cancers in an attempt to enable the man to live longer and better. That is when it is likely to benefit him. Cairns Urology 98 Spence Street, Cairns, 4870 4041 0700 www.cairns-urology.com.au

If these symptoms occur then the man should see his General Practitioner who will usually examine him and arrange for such tests as an ultrasound and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test which is not a specific test for cancer but may raise a suspicion. Sometimes medication may help with assisting the muscle at the bladder opening to relax and the emptying to improve. Some medications will shrink the prostate but they do not usually help with the symptoms and as a side effect can alter the PSA readings and give an artificially low reading. ARTS CENTRE

PLAYING THIS MONTH

MICHELLE NICHOLLE [by Andre w Masterson]

I N T E RV I E W Acclaimed Australian jazz singer Michelle Nicolle will light up the stage at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday, November 16, a fitting finale to the 2012 Jazz Up North series. Melbourne-based Michelle says she is very excited to be playing at Tanks with her band. In particular, she is looking forward to playing some of the songs she has just recorded for her new album. The album will be her seventh and is so fresh that it doesn’t yet have a name. Its content, however, can be described in just two words. “Henry Mancini,” says Michelle. “It’s all the music of Henry Mancini – his great hit songs from the 1950s to the 1970s.” The late Mr Mancini (1924 – 1994) was an American popular music genius, who wrote a string of enduring hits that included ‘Moon River’, ‘Love Story’, ‘Peter Gunn’ and the theme from the Pink Panther movies, among many others. His work is so well known that it requires a significant deal of bravery for any musician to take it on. Michelle, fortunately, is a very brave woman. “There are lots of songs in the standard repertoire that I feel I have no right to sing. They are beautiful songs, but I will never, for instance, do a version of a Billie Holiday song, or some of Cannonball Adderley’s songs. I have no experience that matches those stories – I can’t make them part of me.” Michelle’s early life was indeed in sharp contrast to that of Ms Holiday, except in one respect – both had rural childhoods. Michelle grew up in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, where she took up violin at the age of eight. Through high school she was involved in the regional children’s orchestra. She also used to hang around the Angaston Town Hall with her father, who used to polish the floor there. While there, she made full use of the in-house grand piano. At the time, her musical interests centred on pop and rock music. Indeed, she was quite a fan of Duran Duran. It was not until she was studying violin at Adelaide University that she began to develop an interest in jazz. It was a rapid conversion that saw her ditch her fiddle studies and concentrate instead on singing. Never one for half measures, her first jazz passion involved vocal interpretations of bebop – the high energy, complex form from the 1950s typified by artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker and Dexter Gordon. Like all good musicians, invention soon took over from imitation, and Michelle quickly blossomed into a formidable, original talent. Her first album, Misterioso, was released in 1998, to enthusiastic reviews. The girl from the Barossa was finally on the musical map. Since then, she has established herself as one of the most in-demand jazz vocal stylists in Australia. She has so far won three Mo Awards, a National Jazz Award and has been nominated several times for ARIA awards. Shortly after her performance at Tanks, she is off overseas again – this time to Berlin. “I’ll be going there for five weeks,” she says. “It will be a bit of a working holiday. I’ve never played in Berlin before, but I don’t think it’s a scary prospect. I see it as a nurturing place. I think people in lots of European countries have more acceptance of music and art than we do in Australia. It’s really a very lovely place – and I think you need to get a boost of that every now and then.”

MICHELLE NICOLLE QUARTET FRIDAY 16 NOVEMBER

For Michelle, performing from time to time in Europe is not only advisable for business reasons, it’s also essential for mental health. “That’s the thing!” she says. “It’s important to get out of the space you live in and be rejuvenated. It’s good to spend time in different environments. It’s hard to make a living as a jazz musician anywhere in the world, but I think the concentration of people who love the form is greater in Europe than it is in Australia.”

The final show in our 2012 Jazz Up North Series showcases the amazing vocals of National Jazz Award Winner and ARIA finalist, Michelle Nicolle. Known for her ability to get right to the heart of a song, as well as being an in the moment improviser, Michelle Nicolle has developed and nurtured her art over many years. She delivers engrossing live performances, displaying exceptional technique. Don’t miss her with her quartet for one night only.

One advantageous thing, however, is that jazz musicians and jazz fans from anywhere around the world all tend to speak the same musical language. The form is less prone to regional or national variation than pop, rock or folk. “I tend to think of jazz as a universal music form,” says Michelle. “People tend not to define it in terms of, say, an Australian jazz sound or anything like that. We play the way we play, and that’s it. Jazz stems from an American tradition, but it’s absorbed elements of many other cultures along the way. It’s really hard to define it in terms of a national sound – as something you could call ‘Australian’ jazz. It might be different if there were Indigenous elements in our music, but there isn’t.”

For her show at Tanks, Michelle will be joined by guitarist Geoff Hughes, double-bassist Tom Lee and drummer Ronny Ferella. She says Cairns jazz fans are in for a real treat. “They can expect a lot of songs that they know,” she says. “But there will be lots of improvising and lots of story-telling. We try to have as much fun as possible, while remaining within the context of each song. And, yes, there will be quite a bit of Henry Mancini …”

How to choose a venue for your

Chris tmas Staff Party Choosing the right venue for your company’s Christmas celebrations can be a huge responsibility. Whether you are organising for ten guests or 100, everyone’s enjoyment of the evening usually rests on the shoulders of one person – the organiser. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right venue this year and make some potential savings‌ • Consider how many people will be attending as you’ll need a venue that can accommodate your guests comfortably. Pick a venue that will suit your anticipated attendance figures – a full venue guarantees an excellent atmosphere. • Choose a venue that can provide as many of your needs as possible such as catering, furniture, tableware and cloakroom. If possible ask some of your suppliers to sponsor the drinks, canapÊs or decorations – it’s a great way to build relationships and to save a few pennies. Open from 5:30pm | Reservations Essential Cnr The Esplanade & Spence Street

• Consider booking the venue on a day earlier in the week – most venues are booked out on a Friday or Saturday – you may get it at a cheaper rate?!

Ph 4044 1887 | .com

• Ask for a detailed breakdown of what’s included with your party package. Will there be a co-ordinator or member of staff available to offer assistance on the day of the event? What is the cancellation policy should something not go to plan? Have the booking confirmed in writing and phone ahead of the date to double check that everything is in order. • Consider booking the venue on a day earlier in the week – most venues are booked out on Friday and Saturdays – you may get it at a cheaper rate?! • To end the event on a high make suitable provisions for post-event transport; bus or taxis and scout affordable accommodation near to the venue. Remember your guests won’t notice any last minute hiccups that may seem like huge issues at the time, so be sure to relax and let the good times roll!

Christmascheers Well folks it’s that time of year again where before you get out of bed you’re sweating. The summer is quickly coming at us full force. When I first started drinking wine, I would stick my nose up to whites, but had a tough time swallowing the big, punch-in-the-face reds on a humid thirty degree day. I slowly made my way to enjoy chilled milder reds then moved onto whites. Now I love refreshing, chilled white wine any time, but especially on a hot summer day.

I had the pleasure of meeting a wine maker the other night at a wine tasting dinner, Michael Paxton from Paxton Wines in McLaren Vale, South Australia. It was great to talk to him and ask him about his vineyard and their wine making techniques as everyone seems to have similar approaches yet there’s always something different. For three decades now the Paxtons showcase fruit grown biodynamically with vines that were planted as early as 1890’s. The wines are all very different vintage to vintage as they use wild yeast, harvest by hand, and crush whole bunches of grapes to protect the delicate flavour of the fruit. Here are a few great wines of theirs to try for summer. First is the Chardonnay, featuring complex citrus fruit on the nose

with classic toasted nuts from the oak aging. On the palate you’ll find stone fruit with a balanced creamy finish and the zing of a little citrus. Next, try the Pinot Gris with fragrant spice on the nose, and green apple and citrus. On the palate you’ll find a lighter texture, less round than the Chardonnay, with delicate pear and quince sneaking through. Don’t worry I haven’t forgotten about the red wine drinkers. Paxton actually has a grape that seems to be grown more and more in Australia, Tempranillo, which is usually found in Spanish wines. The Tempranillo is a medium, light red that can be served slightly chilled so it’s not the same as the warm, big Cabernet Sauvignon that’s too much for a hot sweaty day. There is fragrant herbs, spices and earthy fruit to the nose, with a savory fruit, Aussie meat pie, and tomato sauce on the palate and softer round tannins. Perfect to enjoy as the sun is going down for another day. Next time you’re looking for a great wine to enjoy on these warmer days, try one of the Paxton Wines. Your friends will be happy with your purchase! Happy swirling, glass filling, legs sticking, vino drinking! by Krista Hall ISG Cert Wine Expert www.eatyourcakeandhaveittoo.wordpress.com

Ms Dean said food is very high on the priority list when it comes to Christmas celebrations. “Our lead in package of $39 per person offers amazing value with Mrs Clause’s Home Cooked Buffet spanning a choice of starters, salads, seafood, hot buffet dishes and desserts. For me personally, the highlight this menu is the seafood comprising North Queensland cooked prawns and sweet chilli and lime marinated mussels while traditionalists will love the honey glazed leg ham, roasted turkey with cranberry sauce, roasted vegetables and steamed Christmas pudding with brandy sauce to finish.” For more information and bookings, please contact: Rydges Tradewinds Cairns: Phone: 4053 0390 Rydges Esplanade Resort: Phone: 4044 9000

The Perfect Location B u f fe t , b ever a ges an d b elly fl o ps Christmas can be stressful. Grocery shopping, selecting bubbly, keeping the seafood on ice and the kids entertained once the presents have been unwrapped. And then there’s the cleaning up. Unless you spend the festive season at the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, that is. “One occasion, many different ways to celebrate,” is the theme for this year’s events. It’s a fitting statement with the chance for romantic interludes, casual get-togethers and kid-friendly food and fun. In the lead up to the 25th the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas is inviting local businesses to enjoy lunch or dinner in the lagoon environs including buffet, beverages and optional belly flops. Far Northerners can also take time out to spoil themselves with a special overnight rate including a room overlooking the lagoon, dinner at one of the resort’s top eateries, breakfast at award-winning Lagoons Restaurant, and a late check-out to truly indulge.

The offer is open until December 22 but is set to return in a similar format in January and February. This year’s eagerly awaited Christmas brochure is packed with lunch and dinner options for the big day and the equally (some would say more so) important New Year’s Eve. Options cover informal fun poolside to casual three-course dining and a five-course degustation experience. Santa makes a visit, as do fabulous fireworks. For the first year, the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas will light up the sky on New Year’s Eve as well as Christmas night. All this plus $250 weekend packages. Visit the dedicated website for locals to learn more www.sheratonportdouglas.com, call the resort on 07 4099 5888, or keep up to date on offers on Facebook www.facebook.com/sheratonmirageportdouglas

Check List

DETERMINE how much you wish to spend per person. Keep in mind that a business is allowed to spend a total of $100 per person before you may incur fringe benefits tax.

CHOOSE a venue that is suited to your demographic and caters for the number of staff you have. Under 10 staff may opt for a dinner party.

PLAN, plan, plan! It is never too early to start planning your Christmas Function. The earlier you begin planning the easier the process will be.

FOOD & BEVERAGE: Providing food doesn’t have to be expensive. A lot of venues provide set menus that are able to cater for all budgets. Consider everyone and opt for a free drink limit and all above to be paid for. Remember to take into account those who have dietary requirements.

SELECT your date. The closer the date is to Christmas, the more difficult it will be to organise. Try for late november or early December, Friday is usually the most preferable day.

IDEAL FOR THE FAMILY

CONSIDER what you will use to entertain your staff. Some workplaces enjoy providing their own entertainment, having employees perform skits and party tricks. These may even begin to form a tradition and will depend very much on the culture of your organisation.

This totally enriches their already popular reputation as it creates more dining versatility and caters to a mosaic of options. The dinner menu starts from 5 pm until 11 pm (Monday –Thursday & Sunday) and then for Friday and Saturday nights it is open until 11:30 pm. This is great for late night diners.

The Coffee Club on the Esplanade now features a delicious new dinner menu.

The Coffee Club has one of the hottest locations, near the night markets and overlooking the Lagoon and esplanade. A perfect place for dinner and of course people watching as it is lively, busy and fun. The atmosphere has a casual, relaxed vibe and the staff are friendly and attentive. Robyn, the manager organized a table outside looking out onto flowering frangipanis and with a gentle war m breeze and a new moon, it had a distinct tropical feel. There is also inside seating if you prefer nice comfy couches and intimacy. We were recommended the Mezze Platter for two for our entrĂŠe. Priced at $29.90, this Mediterranean style platter is a tower of prawn and chicken skewers and haloumi cheese on a bed of seasoned chips with lemon pepper calamari. Surrounding it are delicious war m Kalamata olives, marinated mushrooms, souvlaki bread and a decadent caviar dip with a lovely Greek style salad that adds zesty freshness. It is generously portioned to say the least and for some is quite easily all that you need. Other entrees are priced at $15.90 and also very enticing. We had to pause before the main so with a glass of red wine we enjoyed the atmosphere and what intrigued me is the interesting mix of people at The Coffee Club. There were families having dinner

together, couples sipping wine and sharing a moment, friends chatting over coffees and cakes, some with meals and others with a coffee, such diversity in dining. The dinner menu is a clever selection of classic meals that caters to every taste. The meals are delicious, honest, fairly priced from $19.90 - $ 24.90 and very generous. For the main I chose the Spicy Plum Pork fillet which was served with a creamy mash and crisp vegetables, the pork was tender and the plum sauce perfect. My friend had the Grilled Pesto Salmon which was cooked to perfection. To cap it off the desserts are divine and of course a coffee to help digest. So if you only know The Coffee Club for its coffee, treat your taste buds to a really delightful dinner experience on the Esplanade.

Dalmatian Hot Spots Dalmatian coast, where is that? Croatia? Why do you want to go there? These were the first words that I uttered when a friend I was planning a trip to Ireland with suggested we do a side trip and cruise along the Dalmatian coast. Whilst I had heard of legendary Dubrovnik, I knew very little else about Croatia apart from the fact that there was a war there in the early 90’s

was all a bit chaotic and very, very blunt, but after the meal we were given an even more direct briefing by the “waiter” John, who upon learning we were Australians, proceeded to tell us that we were not to ask questions like the previous Australian passengers as he was “not a tour guide but just the &#%@_&% waiter.” We soon learnt that this blunt approach was fairly typical for Croatians and did our best not to be put off by it. In fact we became firm friends with the &#%@_&% waiter and one of the older crew members “It’sTony”, which we translated as Stoney.

After doing a bit of research and reading such descriptions as; “Croatia’s rare blend of glamour and old-fashioned authenticity make this Europe’s ‘it’ destination, where beaches and sunshine vie for attention with cultural treasure, ancient architecture and time-tested folk traditions”, I was sold

The ship was comfortable, but fairly basic. Cabins were pretty small, but there was plenty of outside deck space. As the ships air conditioning only ran when we were moored, and the temperatures were in the high 30’s, you did not want to spend much time on them. All of the cabins were full with a mix of people young and old from France, the UK, Canada and New Zealand. The cruise included breakfast and lunch each day, leaving you free to dine at whatever restaurant took your fancy on the particular Island you

moored at that night. The food was pretty stodgy on the ship so the opportunity to dine ashore each night was greatly appreciated. The week that followed can only be described as glorious; cruising the calm, deep gunmetal blue waters of the Adriatic, from one enchanting island to another. Each day usually consisted of a stop at one island, or a remote beach for a morning of swimming and exploring, followed by more of the same in the afternoon as we moored at our evening’s destination. There are a lot of these boats cruising the Dalmatian coast and more often than not mooring meant tying up alongside a raft of similar vessels and clambering across each of them to reach the land. Highlights of the cruise included Mljet, the largest island in the Dubrovnik archipelago as well as, the most beautiful and the most forested island of the Adriatic. Be sure to visit the large saltwater late that cocoons a Benedictine monastery. The walled city of Korcula on the island of the same name,s rumoured to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, was

stunning with its rich cultural and historical heritage. We ended our day here sitting atop the one of the turrets in the wall that surround the city, sipping cocktails and watching the multitude of kite surfers against the backdrop of the dramatic mainland shoreline and grey wall of coastal mountains. Our favourite overnight destination by far was the fairy tale island of Hvar. One of the Adriatic’s most enchanting and well preserved historic towns, know for is fragrant heather, lavender, laurel and rosemary. Once an important port in the Venetian empire, today its centre is entirely traffic free, surrounded by stunning architecture and frequented by luxury yachts. Climb the steep hill to the 16th century fortress above the old city, explore the passageways and stairways or just sit and watch the world go by with a coffee or a cocktail in the beautiful old square overlooking the harbor. Despite a number of abusive outbursts from the captain for smuggling aboard bottled water we were very reluctant to disembark when we returned to Dubrovnik, maybe even a little resentful that this famous city was on our calendar. We soon got over this as we passed through the magnificent walls of this pedestrian only town, full of medieval, renaissance and baroque treasures.

Maintaining Family Ties even be allocated parental responsibility.

Not all family law matters, relating to children, involve separated or estranged parents. In addition to parents, the Family Law Act 1975 gives standing to relatives and other “non-parents” to make application for parenting orders. These orders may set out with whom a child will live, spend time and communicate. This means that grandparents, aunts, uncles, adult siblings or other significant adults have recourse to family laws to maintain a meaningful relationship with a child and

There are many and varied reasons, which would cause a non-parent to resort to child related litigation. The most common is because a parent restricts or prevents a relative from spending time or communicating with a child. This may occur even where the child’s parents’ relationship remains in tact but is more usual in situations where a relative sides with a particular parent, after the break down of the family unit. This inevitably leads to dishar mony with the other parent, who reacts by limiting that relative’s relationship with the child. Another example of a non-parent family law situation is where grandparents, uncles or aunts assert that one or both of the child’s biological parents are unable to provide the child

with a safe, stable and healthy home environment. Sadly, this situation usually occurs where the child’s parent or parents suffer from substance abuse, more serious mental health issues, is negligent, a victim or per petrator of family violence or a perpetrator of child abuse. In these situations, the non-parent will usually seek to have parental responsibility and for the child to live with him or her. Non-parent family law situations can be as unique as individual family situations. Other examples include adult siblings parenting a child, where the biological parents are deceased, incapacitated or absent and a step parent, who wishes to maintain a meaningful relationship with a child, following the break down of his or her relationship with the child’s biological parent or upon the death of his or her spouse, who is the child’s biological parent. The criterion to satisfy is for the

69 I CairnsLife

non-parent to be a person, who is significant to the child’s care, welfare and development. Except where a particular situation falls within an exemption within the Family Law Act, any significant person, wishing to seek a Court made parenting order must first participate in mandatory family dispute resolution. The Family Relationship Centre offers this process. Private family law resolution practitioners also offer private mediations. Once a matter comes to the Court’s attention, the judicial officer will consider all relevant factors and make an order, which is in the best interests of the child. In some very extreme and sad cases, the family ties may lessen or even cease because it is not in the child’s best interests to spend time or communicate with a parent or a person, who had been a significant person in better times.

The perfect nursery When your baby arrives, you will be the centre of its universe ... and that universe will seem to revolve around the nursery. Therefore it’s important to make this room a sanctuary for you both – a calm, comfortable place where you can be together and get to know each other. It’s a good idea to get your baby’s nursery organised when you’re about six or seven months pregnant, meaning you are still able to get around fairly easily.

There is so much planning involved in getting this room ready, and as most mums know, thinking through all the different scenarios can take up endless hours! And as tempting and exciting as it is to buy a nursery full of baby gear before the birth, it's probably wiser to buy a few essentials and then spend carefully as the need arises. You should also enquire about hiring the equipment that you won’t need for longer than 6 months. Here we have compiled a list of equipment you will need for your nursery, and some others to make life easier. Cot – This will most likely be one of your largest outlays. To alleviate some of the cost, consider buying a cot that converts to a toddler bed. If you are buying a second hand cot, make sure that it complies with Australian Standards, and that the width between the vertical dowels is between 50mm and 95mm, and the top of the mattress to the top of the cot is at least 500mm. And as tempting as it is to make your baby’s cot look beautiful and comfortable, remember the SIDS recommendations and never use a bumper or pillow in the cot. And if you are positioning the cot beneath a window, make sure there is no curtain or blind cords hanging over the cot that might become a hazard. Bassinette or hammock – It is recommended that Bassinettes and Hammocks are generally only used for the first three to six months, depending on individual weight and development of your baby. This is defintely a product you should consider hiring, rather than buying. Hammocks are increasing in popularity, as they are very soothing for colicky babies, as the rhythmic action is thought to relieve nervous tension and relax baby’s muscles. A lot of mums swear by hammocks to promote long sleepy nights!

L I F E

Change Table – while some may consider this a luxury item, anyone who has any niggling back pain will know how valuable a change table is. It’s also very handy for keeping track of nappies, wipes and lotions and creams. Ensure you never leave baby unattended on the change table. Chair – whether you need the chair for feeding, reading or late night cuddles, having a comfortable chair, preferably with a footstool, is a must for any nursery! You will no doubt spend hours in this chair, and it may even double as your bed on some nights! Again - this one is best hired. Nappy Disposal system – whether you buy one of the popular disposal systems on the market, or have a sack of nappy bags and rubbish bin near the changetable, for hygienic safety, ensure you regularly empty the bin. Baby Bath –To save valuable space and money, you may consider a Change Table / Bath combination, which has plenty of storage space for all the essentials! Monitor – There are so many different monitors on the market that its worthwhile spending some time focussing on your needs. Decide how you want to use it – do you want to hear everything that goes on in the room, or do you like the idea of the motion sensitive pads that some models boast? Whether you have a monitor or not, and how you use it, is your personal choice. Getting your nursery ready for baby is one of the greatest adventures for new parents! There are so many options these days with themes, colours and decorations. But no matter what equipment you opt for, nor whether you chose to buy or hire, you will find there is always space available for love and cuddles!

Cyclist of the Month Nathan Sandford

Q: What do you do for a living? A: I'm a firefighter with Qld Fire and Rescue Service. Q: How long have you been cycling? A: I moved to Cairns from Victoria in 1999 and shortly after bought my first mountain bike from Pump n Pedals. I have been riding on spectacular local trails and downhill tracks as well as racing in the region ever since. Q: What was it that inspired you to buy a mountain bike? A: I met a few locals like Glen Jacobs, who are heavily involved in mountain bike riding and I went along with them a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Q: How do you juggle between family life and racing commitments? A: I have two energetic young boys (2 and

4) when I'm not working or training we spend a lot of time on the esplanade playing and running around. I’m also very lucky to have a partner who is understanding and is also in training for the Eclipse marathon this month! Q: How long have you been competing in triathlon's? A: After witnessing Challenge Cairns in 2011, I decided that it was a challenge I couldn't resist. So in 2011 (in the lead up to Ironman Cairns 2012) I competed in as many local triathlons as I could to prepare myself for my first Iron Distance Tri. Q: Is there a race you're preparing for now? A: The Geelong Long Course Tri in February, in preparation for Ironman Cairns 2013.

Q: Any tips you could share in regards to preparation for a race? A: Train with everything you plan to use on race day and don't underestimate expert advice, whether it's your local bike mechanic, sports dietitian or physiotherapist. Q: What is your favourite brand of bike and why? A: Specialized! They have a huge range of quality bikes, and in my experience they’re very reliable. Q: What was the toughest race you've been involved in and why? A: I would have to say Tri Port Long Course 2011. It was my first triathlon longer than a sprint distance. It was very hot and a poor nutrition plan meant it was a hard day.

Desire Burning

After almost a year of teaser images and camouflage-clad prototypes, the Jaguar F-Type roadster has finally hit our shores. Seen as the spiritual successor to the iconic Jaguar E-Type. The new Jaguar F-TYPE represents a return to the company's heartland: a two-seater, convertible sports car focused on performance, agility and driver involvement. The F-TYPE is a continuation of a sporting bloodline that stretches back more than 75 years and encompasses some of the most beautiful, thrilling and desirable cars ever built. Three variants will be available at launch F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine with all engines featuring stop/start technology to maximise efficiency. While the V8 F-Type becomes Jaguar’s fastest accelerating car by

reaching 100km/h in 4.3 seconds, the V6 variants put in a good perfor mance too, the 250kW version completing the sprint in 5.3 seconds and the 280kW S reaching triple digits in 4.9 seconds. The F-TYPE V8 S model is electronically limited to a top speed of 300km/h. It all adds up to a free-revving, willing nature that encourages the enthusiastic driver to explore the full extent of the engines' abilities Jaguar has applied its biggest production brakes to the V8 F-Type, with 380mm front rotors backed up by 376mm discs at the rear, cooled by large gills in the front bumper and air channelled around aerodynamically-shaped suspension components. In order to maximise the benefits of its advanced structure, the F-TYPE features all-aluminium double wishbone front and rear suspension and a quick-ratio steering rack for ultimate responsiveness. In addition, Jaguar has

acoustically tuned the F-Type’s rear to enable more exhaust noise to enter the cabin and the engine’s intake note is also piped into the cabin from under the bonnet, which Jaguar says “is particularly exciting when combined with the scream of the supercharger”. Taking inspiration from the C-X16 concept unveiled in 2011, the front of the F-TYPE features a new interpretation of the bold angular Jaguar grille from which flows the muscular clamshell bonnet with its signature 'power bulge'. Other design standouts include the hidden door handles, which are barely distinguishable when looking at the F-Type in profile. Central air vents remain hidden in the dash-top unless the climate control system detects the need for “rapid high-level temperature regulation”, at which point they automatically rise. Two premium audio systems from Jaguar Land Rover partner Meridian will be

offered as options, with 10 or 12 speaker setups respectively pumping out 380W or 770W. An F-Type coupe is expected to emerge in 2014 and could well share the C-X16 concept’s roof line, which flows right to the rear of the car, mimicking the E-Type’s boot access with its unusual side-hinged rear window. For the time being though, all eyes are on this stunning convertible After making its international debut at the Paris Motor Show the F-Type has just thrilled enthusiasts in Australia at the Sydney Motor Show. If you’d like to see it in a showroom here in Cairns early next year, then we suggest you join us in picking up the phone and pleading with those in power at Trinity Jaguar. HomeLife Building, buying or renovating your property

DIY Home Improvement For most homeowners there is a lot of thought and care taken to make the house into a home. The home can be seen as a reflection of ourselves, our families, and our hopes and dreams for the future. With the abundance of home improvement and reality shows nowadays – DIY home improvements are becoming very common, though they may prove to take twice as long, even if they could save you money. A good home improvement job can extend the life of your home, increase its value and enhance its appearance. It may also keep you, your family and your property safe and protected – especially come cyclone season. A home improvement can be one of the best investments of time, effort and money that you make. If not done properly a home improvement can prove to be a big headache – it really does pay to do your research. If your skills with a hammer or saw are a little rusty, hire yourself a professional who has the experience and the portfolio! Home improvement can take many forms; in any room, the backyard, or on the roof. Here’s a few general home improvement tips to get you started: • For interior home improvement in multiple rooms, plan ahead to work on one area of the home at a time to have the least disruption to the family. • Keep a few phone numbers of trusted tradespeople or hardware stores on hand just in case there’s a situation that requires some professional help. • Create a safe environment and prepare the area in the case that a little person may take an interest in the power tools. • Become familiar with the procedure of turning off gas, water and the electricity. Swimming Pool and Spa Layers of Protection

Solar Pool Party

Swimming pools, and spas bring years of enjoyment, especially in the tropics. They offer opportunity to spend time with friends and family or to relax and relieve stress alone, while also providing many health and fitness benefits.  Yet how do we ensure our families are safe? As with many products, following manufacturers' guidelines and rules, you'll have a positive, safe, enjoyable experience. Spa Tips • Babies should not use hot tubs as there thin skin makes them more susceptible to overheating. • Little ones have very little control over bodily functions, spas become unsanitary almost instantly when “accidentsâ€? happen. • Children should not use it for more than five minutes at a time • Drink plenty of fresh water while soaking. • If the bather feels sick to their stomach, dizzy or sleepy, they should exit immediately. • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or unsure about a specific health issue Layers of protection for Swimming Pools • Fencing: Keep all locks and hatches in good working order • Safety Covers: An impenetrable covering that completely covers the pool, or spa will prevent access to the water when there is not supervision. • Alarms: Alarms are available for doors, fences, and in pools. • Rope and Float Line: Place these across the pool to alert swimmers to the separation of the deep end from the shallow end of the pool. • Posted Emergency Information: CPR, other emergency information, and warning signs Responsible Adult Supervision is Key to Child Pool, Spa and Water Safety. Remember also to ensure the family is protected from our harsh sun rays‌.slip, slop, slap! Erecting a shade cloth will protect the family while also save you money on pool chemicals. Peter and Marion Wandel

Peter’s ATV & Outdoor Power Equipment Growing business is true to its roots Peter’s ATV & Outdoor Power Equipment has grown from being a more or less one-man show to an exporter of goods and expertise. The success hasn’t gone to the heads of owners Peter and Marion Wandel. In their words: “We’re still happy to sell you a sparkplug.” Peter, who has worked with small engines his entire adult life, explains. “I started the business in 1994 essentially as a chainsaw and mower dealership. I was the mechanic, the salesman, everything really. As the business grew I added staff and a few years down the track Polaris ATVs, which is a part of the business that has grown significantly.”

by Michelle Walkden Peter’s ATV & Outdoor Power Equipment 157 Scott Street, Cairns, 4870 Tel: 4051 0022 www.petersmowers.com.au

Marion joined the business when the couple wed nine years ago bringing calm and order to the office. She explains ATVs weren’t really on the company’s radar, but Polaris approached them after learning of their reputation as an elite Husqvarna dealer. The duo is now looking to Papua New Guinea for the next leg in their journey.

Peter flies to the country each month working with mining, construction, commercial and government clients, providing regular and emergency maintenance and repair services as well as exporting goods. “We have certainly changed over the years, but we’ve never forgotten our roots – mowers and chainsaws – catering to the needs of our clients,” Peter says. “That heritage is important to us.” His grease stained palms confirm the point. While more and more of Peter’s time may be spent on managerial activities he still finds time to get into the workshop where it all started.

Po c k e t C h e r rie s by Neil Hughes

It’s a bygone era when many people in Far North Queensland had room for a huge mango tree. It would dominate their back yard eventually shading out all other fruit trees. Nowadays propagators and nurseries have developed and sell a huge variety of dwarf fruit trees to suit smaller yards or pots. Some, like citrus, are produced on dwarf root stock so that many of our favourites like limes, mandarins, lemonades and oranges can be grown side by side in one small back yard. Even bananas have dwarf varieties producing regular sized fruit. Another alternative is to plant fruit trees that are naturally small and can even be integrated into the garden making them multi-functional, suitable for hedging and screening, producing perfumed flowers, attracting birds and butterflies and providing beautiful foliage and delicious fruit.

rapidly growing into crimson black 2cm “cherries. The flavour is excellent, resembling that of a true cherry. The first crop is the largest, but the tree fruits for up to 5months. It also can be hedged or used as a screening tree. The Jaboticaba and the Grumichama fruit trees are both propagated locally at Limberlost Nursery and are fantastic small tropical fruit trees well suited to growing in the Far North.

The Jaboticaba (Myriaria cauliflora), from Brazil is one such strikingly attractive fruit tree with delicate foliage and peeling bark. It grows around 3-6 m, has delicious cherry flavoured black grape like fruit on the trunk and branches, crops 4-6 times a year and can be grown in sun or shade. This magic little fruit tree can even be made into a bonsai or hedged. Another small fruit tree from Brazil is the Grumichama (Eugenia brasiliensis). It has attractive foliage with long glossy deep green leaves. White perfumed flowers are borne heavily on long stalks,

OMNI PROPERTY – LISA COSTA ‘’I’m not delusional…I’m an entrepreneur’’ is the poster that hangs above the desk in Lisa’s office. Having been on the ‘’other side’’ of real estate as an investor Lisa says that since starting Omni Property Qld she has found an even greater love of property than ever before. “It’s great to be part of other people’s dreams and of course it’s easy to sell what you love”” Landlords just love our ‘pay for service’ facility property management. It’s a simple concept, although I have had more than a couple of landlords say ‘’it seems too good to be true”. Needless to say they are raving converts once they realize how much money they can save. Lisa comments that the success of Omni Property Qld is down to a team of passionate people who love what they do and who are all individually entrepreneurial and dynamic. ‘’It makes coming to work a lot of fun’’ she then laughs and adds ‘perhaps that’s where the ‘delusional’ part comes into play!’’ OMNI PROPERTY - NALINI WURZINGER Nalini was born and raised in South America (Guyana) before migrating to Australia in the 90’s with her husband Rodney. Since discovering Cairns while on holiday they have been living and working here for the last 14yrs with their two children Subrina and Kalvin and running their 2 businesses, The Curry Bowl. As an investor in the Cairns property market for many years and with extensive experience in property management, Nalini is well prepared for the challenges of Real Estate. Now as part of the team at Omni Property, Nalini says “’I’m really excited to be involved in the real estate industry from the inside. Quite different from being in a kitchen from sun-up to sun-down” she laughs. OMNI PROPERTY - JAZMIN ONG Having spent just over four years working in Hospitality and also recently working full time at her parent’s family business “Jade Cabinets” Jazmin is now pursuing her passion for Real Estate. “It has been pretty full on since I left school and I have been looking for a change, so when I was given this opportunity I just couldn’t resist!” Jazmin said “I can now put all the skills I have acquired during the years I have worked and studied in Hospitality into something I really believe in and have a great love for.’’ With her determined and bubbly personality and a passionate enthusiasm for Real Estate, Jazmin brings a breath of fresh air and youthful perspective to the industry.

Will your home withstand the next cyclone season?

Roslyn Smith Affinity Designer Homes Phone : 40518866 mobile : 0439 855851

It’s probably an opportune time to consider whether your home will be able to stand up to cyclones and future weather patterns similar to what we have experienced in the last few years. What if cyclone Yasi had actually hit Cairns and passed over your suburb? Is your home built to cope with that kind of extremity of weather and do you understand what the cyclone ratings mean? There’s a reason why most of the newer buildings are still standing and it’s mainly the older buildings that were affected by cyclones in the past 30 years. After cyclone Althea, (Townsville 1971) and cyclone Tracey (Darwin 1974) the Australian Building Codes were revised and much work was done on testing for cyclonic design wind speeds. As a result of this work stricter building codes were introduced in 1985. Maybe I should make it a bit easier to understand what cyclone ratings actually mean. There are 5 categories for rating cyclones that range from Category 1 (mild) to Category 5 (most extreme). In cyclonic areas there are generally 3 categories for housing construction. These range from Category 1 (41 metres per second - a mild cyclone) to Category 3 (60 metres per second an extreme cyclone). We should really be calling them by their correct description which is ‘design wind speed for housing construction’ as that would save a lot of confusion. I say generally because the certifying engineer may deem it is necessary to design to a

98 I CairnsLife

higher wind speed. These design wind speeds are also determined by the surrounding terrain. If there is some solid protection by the surrounding terrain within, say 500 metres, then it will help with protection of the home. If the home is out in the middle of a flat cane paddock or on the edge of a hillside then it’s very open and will have little or no surrounding protection. So while the construction may be further from the coast than a built up suburb, the design wind speed could differ. The advantage of building a new home is that it is constructed to the current strict cyclonic building codes from the walls to the roof to the windows and even the tie down for your water tank. Although these engineering requirements will add to the cost of your home construction in a cyclonic area, it will give you peace of mind when a cyclone is nearby. Maintenance of your home is one of many important factors that will affect the strength of cyclone resistant construction; dangerous trees overhanging your home may cause damage during high winds; insufficient site drainage may undermine footings and land stability. My advice …. Talk to an experienced local builder or engineer to make sure you have taken all appropriate precautions before the next cyclone comes, especially if you have recently moved to Cairns from a non cyclonic area.
