PUBLISHER’S NOTE

UPFRONT

Marching on!

John Jarvis Photographed by Highlights Photography

It’s hard to believe we’re already into our third month of the year. And, by all accounts – including that of our own Mayor – 2013 could be a turning point for our beautiful city. So what better time to introduce you to some of Cairns’ very own young entrepreneurs in our special Young Guns feature. Determined to prove the Gen.Y knockers wrong, they’ve channeled all their energy, hard work and determination into making a name for themselves in their chosen fields. And for those looking to improve their own career prospects, we’ve also included a special online training guide thanks to AOT. We trust you’ll also enjoy our inspiring cover story on the amazing John Jarvis. From the team and I, have a marvelous March and don’t forget to support those locals who are out there having a go!

WHAT’S UP

BOB We chat with the Mayor

Fast approaching his first anniversary as Mayor, Cr. Bob Manning is clearly looking forward the months ahead. After an internal restructure that’s produced a new CEO and two other proposed senior positions, he hopes to place greater emphasis on financial management and in developing the right culture within the organization. With the appropriate planning now in place Bob’s main focus is to begin implementing his council’s Five Year Capital Works Programme (5YCWP). In the coming weeks Bob intends to present the plan to both the State and Federal Governments to work out cost sharing arrangements and is confident that the upcoming federal election will work in our favour. “The government is more likely to hand out money to get votes while the opposition will promise money in order to get elected,” he says. “On top of that, the state government now has to think about the second half of their term and start doing something constructive after all the cut backs.” Included in the 5YCWP is provision for

a new performing arts centre – the location of which is still to be finalized – and a redevelopment of the convention centre to house much larger conferences. Also included in the same stage is a commercial development of units and/or a hotel along with a multilevel carpark on the old post office site. “We’ll be putting it out as a public/private partnership with a lease back option,” Bob says. “It won’t be built off our balance sheet it will be built off someone else’s.” Also part of the plan is the rectangular stadium and other sporting facilities along with a major CBD Redevelopment. “City Place is just a part of it,” Bob says. “We’re looking at an area stretching from Cairns Central to the Esplanade and Aplin Street through to Wharf Street – with a cost of around $3-4 million.” Also included in the 5YCWP is the Port Douglas Waterfront Project. “We expect to have a very positive announcement in regard to that in the next few weeks,” he says. Now more convinced more than ever

15 I CairnsLife

before that the proposed Cairns Entertainment Precinct (CEP) was flawed, Bob emphasizes the need to chase the lucrative grey boat market. “One reason we were opposed the CEP was because of the location – valuable, strategic port land which should be retained for future maritime growth in Cairns,” he says. “I’m confident that when I meet with the state and federal governments they’ll put that money back on the table for the right investments.” Coming off the best tourism season we’ve experienced in years, thanks in part to China Eastern and China Southern flights, Bob is encouraged by the year ahead. “The Central Park Shopping Centre is due to start construction in March/April and we’ve also had the acquisition of Double Island by Chinese interests where we expect to see work start very soon. There’s a fair degree of optimism out there about 2013 and I think we’ll see that optimism develop into greater confidence.”

Young

G ns! Those born between 1980 and 1994 – better known as Generation Y – have copped more than their fair share of criticism over the years. Often labeled as “lazy’ and ‘self-entitled” with unrealistic goals and expectations, they’ve come under constant criticism from their Baby Boomer and Generation X employers. But as we enter an era dominated by technology, social media and networking, chances are Gen.Y will be having the last laugh as more and more businesses discover they simply can’t function without them. Not only is technology second nature to Gen.Y, they are also believed to be better educated, more socially conscious and more environmentally aware than their predecessors. In fact, those extra years at home which some of the critics describe as “sponging off their parents” has enabled many to equip themselves with the necessary skills required for an uncertain economy. Faced with a lack of job security and high living costs, perhaps their tendency to flit from job to job and be more assertive in the workplace is less about arrogance than it is about

self-preservation. But what makes Gen.Y stand out most from other generations is their “can-do” attitude. Yes they can be impatient, but if they’re willing and capably of doing something – why wait! This unique self-motivation and self-belief has resulted in countless stories of entrepreneurial success. And while at one time people like as Richard Branson were the exception rather than the rule, these days young entrepreneurs are becoming so prolific that Forbes has even introduced a “30 under 30” list to highlight some of the brightest stars in their chosen professions. And of course Cairns is no exception when is comes to young talent. In this edition we’re delighted to introduce you to some exceptional young people whose ambition, drive and professionalism does their generation proud. Although from a range of different industries, each with a different story to tell, all our entrepreneurs have something special in common – their willingness to give something a go. Because when it comes to success, Gen.Y doesn’t wait for someone to give it to them – they take it!

So are the crocs. Half the time you don’t know they’re there because in the Cairns inlet you can’t see them – you can barely see your hand, but you just still get the job done.’ It’s this ‘getting the job done’ that is so intriguing to the majority of Aussies, relatively clueless to the day to day duties of a clearance diver. ‘Basically, we’ll do pretty much

any task the navy requests,’ smiles John. ‘This might range from the underwater repair side of things, where we fix and maintain navy patrol boats and ships, to searching and disposing of explosive ordnance…there’s still a lot up here from World War II, from the Atherton Tablelands right up to Cape York…and there’s a lot of mines, still unaccounted for, all the way out to the reef.’ It’s a day job with inherent risk and danger, risks for which John feels he’s been adequately prepared through the notoriously tough, year long, Basic Clearance Diver Course. ‘In the first two weeks of training we had to swim, in the middle of the night, in the shark infested waters from Sydney’s

Balmoral Beach to Manly and back. The swim is about 6km,’ says John, and upon noticing my expression adds, ‘but it wasn’t too bad because you’re in training with your mates.’ It’s this easygoing, confident and affable nature which no doubt held John in good stead when serving abroad with ‘Operation Slipper’ in the Persian Gulf in 2001, and Iraq in 2003. ‘I spent six months on each assignment. In the Persian Gulf we were boarding vessels suspected of smuggling, and in Iraq we were clearing all the waterways of mines so ships could get in for humanitarian aid. They were both completely different jobs but the experience was second to none, it’s what we

train for.’ These days, John’s role in Cairns mostly keeps his feet dry. ‘As a supervisor, I coordinate everything from the boat to make sure the boys are safe, and doing the job correctly. To be honest, I’d prefer to be in the water, but supervising is good for my career progression to the clearance diving teams in Sydney or Perth.’ Upon completing our interview, I’ve no doubt John will reach his next goal, sensing there’s nothing this action adventure man can’t take…or is there? ‘I get seasick!’ admits John sheepishly. ‘A lot of the time the tablets don’t work, so I just deal with it and get on with the job.’ We laugh. He is a mere mortal after all!

In Cameron’s Case…

Thomas Cameron dreamt of being a world class snow boarder. He even had plans to strap himself into a cockpit and puncture the skies as a fighter pilot but his courage and charisma have served a greater cause; fighting for people’s rights as a lawyer.

Four years ago the highly articulate, genuine and conscientious family law solicitor left the wintery fields of a family farm tucked away in Australia’s southern-most corner, Tasmania, hit far north Queensland and fell for Cairn’s weather, international influence, the Telegraph Track (despite wishing for a bigger 4WD to tackle it in the wet) and the dynamic appeal of this cosmopolitan city. “Coming from a rural background I could relate to a lot of people here in Cairns” says Thomas, one of the youngest practitioners to regularly front the judicial pageantry and pressure of the Federal Magistrates Court. “I’m happy to work long hours through the ‘cut and thrust of litigation’ and take a case all the way to the top”. However, it was within the brick walls of Launceston Church Grammar School where the now Vice President of the North Queensland Law Association and Cairns Young Chamber of Commerce member unearthed his interest in law. “In year 12 legal studies I had a great teacher, Mr Harris.

He was so good at teaching, so knowledgeable in his subject and made first year uni a breeze. Now, law is what I’ve dedicated my life to doing”. Thomas has seen the gavel come down many times during his six years in the “battle of minds and wills” and after running several matters against them joined his formidable opponents Williams Graham Carman in 2011, one of the largest law firms in Cairns. “I’ve met characters from all walks of life and can understand why someone’s background colours their view of the world. I treat people as I would want to be treated if I needed to get a job done and bring bravery, expertise, a bit of a laugh and guts to each case”. Thomas is also committed to maintaining perspective at all times on the job which, in a hotly contested moment, takes skill. His fiancé is also a lawyer “so I try to practice this at home”, he chuckles. Best to see it in an affidavit, perhaps. But all jokes aside, the evidence is clear what direction Thomas Cameron is forging and even though in time they may “all rise” before this chess-loving strategist enters a court room, for now building expertise, a reputation in Queensland and being the best lawyer he can possibly be will suffice. Atherton’s Asset: Financial Planner for the Future She’s organised. In fact, she’s one meticulously planned, preparedfor-the-unexpected, switched-on woman. She has to be. She’s a financial planner and a good one who knows her bulls, bears and even a few ballet moves which is always a great asset. “Mum reckons from the moment I could talk I could organize the family. I think this annoys Aben sometimes (Lauren’s Collinsville, coal-mining fiancé) but he’s now financially-wise and relationship-wise”. Atherton’s “social butterfly”, who was given the title back in Year Two has profited from having the nouse, foresight and drive to think about her future and has been busy building her nest egg ever since the age of 10. “When I started as a receptionist in the financial planning industry I made a plan to learn as much as I could. Finance isn’t something taught in schools and what I’ve learnt has given me the strength and knowledge to set myself up independently”. That’s when Lauren knew what she wanted to do; “organize and help people to ensure they’re making the right decisions about money and become financially secure”. And, after setting some fairly well-cemented goals, a four-year commitment to part time study and full time work in the industry, Lauren finally earned the title of Financial Planner in 2011. Brent Kelly, director at Kelly Wealth Services, applauds Lauren. “What she has achieved for clients in the last two years has changed lives. She genuinely puts clients first every time. The combination

of excelling in her studies, attention to detail, care and love of helping people is the perfect combination for a planner”. A genuinely encouraging family has also helped mould Lauren into the person she is today. “Mum supported my ever-changing ideas and Dad, a believer in the power of the mind, overcame cancer 20 years ago after being given six months to live”. Traditionally, financial planning is a man’s world but “Brent has also been a great mentor for me and encouraged me to specialise in fields such as aged care, Gen Y, families and providing advice to the needs of women because I know what it’s like to put a loved one into aged care, deal with death or trauma and being female I’m able to understand a woman’s unique financial risks”. What’s the chance of this bride-to-be retiring early though? “If our financial projections go to plan probably at 50 or 55 unless Aben goes and buys a new motorbike, that could throw it out a bit”, laughs Lauren. Financial planners have no crystal ball as we know but Lauren’s forecast is clear; to become an entrusted expert throughout the Cairns and Atherton Tablelands and maybe teach dance. Imagine. Organised students with saving accounts that have rhythm. Lauren Lunn – Financial Planner Kelly Wealth Services 26 Florence St, Cairns T: 4041 2055 (Initial consultation is obligation and fee free)

Ross McFarlane ‘Blood, Sweat and Beers: How a Determined Young Gun rose to the top at Gilligan's'. It’s easy to pick a first-timer to Gilligan’s Backpacker Hotel and Resort, their jaw drops, their grin widens, and their eyes pop! Boasting the title of the largest entertainment venue in North Qld, Gilligan’s features a 650 bed hostel, a 2000 plus capacity beer hall, beer garden and nightclub, gaming lounge, restaurant, and a swimming pool! The Cairns institution is a tropical dream for tourists and locals, but can the same be said when it comes to managing? ‘Absolutely!’ grins young gun Ross McFarlane, 27, who pinned on the General Manager of Food and Beverage badge in October 2011. ‘It’s a very unique set-up, I’ve never come across anything else like it in Australia.’ With 750,000 punters through the venue annually, Ross thrives on the versatility of his role. ‘I’m responsible for the operation of the venue, gaming room, restaurants and bars, and I guess it’s always having something new to do everyday, and the varying stimulus week to week, which I love.’ Managing over 100 staff across a venue that trades 24/7 though, is a task that doesn’t come without its challenges. ‘It takes a large team to ensure the business operates successfully, but I thrive being in the thick of it…also, the majority of our staff are in a

similar demographic to me, so it always helps to have a good time when getting the job done.’ So what’s it like managing people in the same age-bracket? ‘I do tend to get a few funny looks when people come in to meet me,’ Ross laughs, ‘but I feel that once they have that, they can then acknowledge the fact I know what I’m doing!’ Born in the UK and based in Cairns since the early 90’s, Ross’s career path wasn’t always so straightforward. ‘Initially, I went down the parent pleasing path of studying law. To pay the bills, I took a job in hospitality and quickly found that my talents lay outside the classroom, so I took the opportunities that presented themselves and never looked back.’ This determination to succeed is something Ross attributes back to his family. ‘My parents ran several successful industry related businesses whilst I was growing up, and I guess moving around a lot in my early years taught me to adapt to situations quickly. I feel like tourism and hospitality runs in my blood.’ So what advice does this young gun have for those hoping to follow in his footsteps? ‘Identify a successful business and aim to be a part of it. Also, be professional from the get go, but make sure you love what you do.’ There’s no doubt that this young man lives by his motto. Cheers Ross!

Fiona McFarlane With her parents establishing Gateway Media in 1994, it’s fair to say that Fiona McFarlane grew up in the tourism and media industry. Now in her early thirties with her own experience behind her, she’s returned to head the company from its new base in Brisbane. With her responsibilities as Managing Director, along with her commitments as Vice President of SKAL Brisbane, she is clearly a young woman who takes her career very seriously. Originally from Scotland, Fiona arrived in Cairns on her tenth birthday where she went on to complete her education at St Monica’s. From there she took on a variety of roles in the tourism and hospitality industries. After a two-year stint as Sales Manager at Gateway Media she later launched their Brisbane office in 2010 – before taking on the Managing Director’s role late last year. Now heading a team of 4, her career has come full circle. “I don't believe it's ever anyone's intention to become involved in the family business but I've never looked back!” she says. As the name suggests, Gateway Media acts as an entry point providing visitors with the best tourist information available. As publishers of the BIG Gateway Maps and producers of Gateway Television, the company highlights all the local attractions the region has to offer. Fiona says both the maps and the TV Program serve as entertaining and informative guides. “The two vehicles enable tourists to get the most out of their visit while providing local businesses with a wonderful platform on which to reach them.”

Printed in full colour at six-monthly intervals, the BIG Maps provide a comprehensive yet easy-to-read resource within a handy, foldable layout. Featuring BIG Map editions of Brisbane, Cairns and Port Douglas along with The Backpacker Map of Cairns and The Chinese Map of Cairns, Fiona says the maps are easily accessible to visitors. “They can find them in a variety of locations including accommodation, car rental desks and tour desks.” To compliment the maps in the Cairns region, Gateway Media produces a television program that runs 24hrs a day from every room in city’s premiere hotels. Capturing the essence of the tropics, the program which is of one-hour duration, introduces visitors to all the attractions on our doorstep. “Along with the region’s landmarks the program also features local identities from the north's business, entertainment, arts and tourism sectors,” Fiona says. When it comes to running a company in the highly competitive media industry, Fiona believes her age is definitely an advantage. “We Gen Y's are social media savvy and can keep up with the fast changing technologies,” she says. “I understand that social media is becoming an essential part of the marketing mix and I'm happy to offer advice to my clients.” She also says the best part of her job is networking. “I love interacting with people, discussing their business and looking for ways that I can help them grow and succeed.”

businesIssues Just How Good Are You?

Is Your Career on Track?

In 20 years’ time, where will you be and what will your future hold? Will you be a CEO, an industry leader or run your own successful business? Or will you be happy with where you are? Will you have fulfilled your dreams or will you be left with doubts like: - Did I miss out on opportunities that could have altered my course? - Did I make the right decisions when I had the chance? - Who ended up a casualty of my ambition? Me? - Did I find my real calling? - Am I happy? Don’t live with regret! My advice to any young person (in fact it doesn’t matter what age you are because it’s never too late and you’re only as young as you feel) is to do what

you can, when you can and put in the time and effort. Have a go, don’t be afraid of failure. If you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right! We’ve all heard these words before and have just about every excuse ready as to why we didn’t. I don’t have enough time‌ I’m too busy‌ It’s too expensive‌ These become our mantra’s, we believe them and settle for what is comfortable rather than pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone! Well, for those young corporate executives in Cairns and those aspiring to climb the corporate ladder, we will provide you with the opportunity to identify where your true strengths lie and help you plan out a pathway to get you there.

You can work with us to put a proposal forward to your employer or work out a way to finance this yourself with a tailor-made program that can include any combination of the options listed below along with a “Team Management Profile which provides constructive, work-based information outlining an individual’s work preferences and the strengths that that individual brings to the team. - Leadership development - Talent management - Performance reviews - Career development - Diversity training - Organisational development We offer obligation free TNA’s (Training Needs Analysis) for individuals and organisations to work out Learning and Development needs for individual staff members or entire teams. Cairns RSL Wanderers Founded in 1978 by John “Tubby” Jekyll, The Cairns RSL Wanderers have long held a place in the heart of the local community. Now looking forward to celebrating their 35th anniversary on October 12th at The Cairns RSL, Vice President Lisa Rapira and A-Grade Coach Bruce Simpson say there’s never been a better time to join The Wanderers’ Family. Affectionately known as the Green Machine after adopting the Dublin Wanderers jersey, the club is filled with history, loyalty and it’s fair share of characters. After opening their doors to two generations of families, it is now home to A-Grade, Reserve, Junior and Women’s teams. “The club prides itself on being a long-standing, family-oriented club with a strong following from past and present players,” Lisa says. Members of the club since 1989, Lisa and her husband Vince now fill the roles of Club President and Vice President and have watched their sons play for the team. “With the close association over the years within the club we have made friends of whom we refer to as our rugby family,” Lisa says. “There’s an extreme loyalty to the club especially when it comes to Big Al’s Day which is an annual event in memory of former player, coach and sponsor Alan Roderick.” It seems that loyalty also extends to their sponsor of 11 years, The Cairns RSL Club, with The Wanderers volunteering on Anzac Day each year. Also passionate about the club, Bruce Simpson began as a player in 1985 then became a sponsor and more recently a coach.

“What’s amazing is I’m now coaching some young men whose fathers I played alongside.” Bruce says his sons also share his love of the game, with one having played in the under 16’s for Wanderers and two more currently attending Brisbane Boys College under Rugby scholarships. “There’s a great opportunity for the whole rugby community,” he says. “It’s actually been put to me that this area is untapped talent.” Those considering joining the club can now also benefit from new staff and improved facilities. “We now have a strength and conditioning coach, a level 2 accredited coach and a wonderful management team,” Bruce says. And with a major upgrade due to start on their home ground of 27 years, Jones Park, Bruce says the atmosphere’s never been more positive. “The enthusiasm of players has been absolutely fantastic, the attendance at training, their determination and passion shows us there’s a great future for our club.” For more information about joining the Cairns RSL Wanderers or about the Anniversary Dinner, please contact Lisa at: lisarapira@plantplus.com.au

Alan “Big Al” Roderick After a long history with the club, Alan lost his battle to cancer at the age of 44. Now in it’s 16th year, a memorial game know as “Big Al’s Day” is held annually in his honor. John “Tubby” Jekyll After founding the club in 1978, John now resides in Brisbane due to illness. Out of respect for his contribution, The Wanderers have helped in supporting him with his rehabilitation.

Beauty Therapy

You Beauty…! Monday October 3, 2012 was a milestone in Katie Edwards’ life. That day she opened her own beauty therapy business. The immediate lead up was nerve wracking and unfamiliar; a giant leap for the 28 year old who left her diploma days well behind in Bangalow the moment she turned the key to her new Cairns salon. “I couldn’t have done it without Chris and Alina, owners of Performex Studio where I rent my space. They suggested I take a leap of faith and I thought why not?”. It didn’t take long for the moving mayhem to begin and in seven frantic days Wax Bamboo Beauty was launched. Katie’s beau, a Conjuboy cattle station wrangler from Atherton, returned to lend a hand. “Logan’s a man’s man and gave up a fishing trip to help me. Our two mums spent a day out and about searching for the right furniture and even Logan’s folks let me stay with them so I’d minimise my overheads. It’s incredible to have this, especially when my family is far away”. This flawless-skinned artist/avid angler who’s partial to dropping a line up the Palmer built her confidence managing salons and spas over the years proving she could run the show.

“I even won an award for the best practical in my class because I got so much practice, working five days, studying two nights. What’s funny is my car cost as much the beauty course and I paid both off on an apprentice wage”. But if this former southern belle was to go it alone it meant finding her niche. “I only wanted to offer treatments I enjoyed and know I was doing something I loved”. According to Katie the personalised edge in beauty therapy has floundered a little “so it’s important every client always receives 100% of my attention and skill no matter what”. Expanding would be the ultimate next step but for now the Cairns entrepreneur says “clients are happy and that’s what matter most”. Note: A wedding has been discussed, so maybe Logan might just break-in one of Katie’s beauty tips after all. fashion

Finding Refuge in Cairns “I woke up this morning and realised I’m self employed and it’s all up to me. I was rather numb, but it’s so good to say I actually have a shop now”. What a sobering way to start your first day as a budding entrepreneur. The last year of Haydon Kemp’s life has been “surreal” with the 31-year old working full time while spending every waking moment establishing his fashion retail store, Refuge Clothing. “My parents owned a business and the one person who made me want my own enterprise was dad”. The one-time only dirt bike rider (a tree got in the way at Black Mountain) started Refuge Clothing online but thought “I’d jump in now, run my own store and sink or swim. And, I’m swimming. I’ve taught myself a lot, asked the right questions and surrounded myself with the right business people. Even friends have helped fit out the shop”. It’s no wonder Haydon is excelling with his business venture; he’s one of the most self-motivated and engaged human beings you could ever hope to meet. Even though he admits “I get excited over breathing sometimes” there’s no harm in enjoying a little oxygen when life is soaring high. “I focus on all positive. I’m half way through reading Donald Trump and Robert Kiyasaki’s book The Midas Touch learning not to let anyone distract you from your goals. When I was 21 my mum passed away within six months of being diagnosed with cancer and that also changed how I thought about everything”.

Despite dyslexic days in school and only just finishing year 11 Haydon was a great socialiser. “I talked too much and couldn’t focus, that was my report card”. But a single bloke’s back packing year around Australia also shaped this inspiring go-getter’s infectious disposition. “I left my hometown in Millicent, a small town in South Australia, and literally said to myself east or west, flipped a coin, chose west and that’s when my journey started”. Then, Haydon’s planned three weeks up this end of the country turned into nine years. “I found Cairns, a job and a place that gave me the same feeling as home”. So the man who’s done his research and 14 years retail has found a refuge. Haydon’s store with its appropriately-placed blood red, shag-pile rug and comfy black ottoman, is like him; they both beckon buyers. It’s a hangout-like haven for teens to thirties looking for casual-Sunday, clubbing, yet sensible Cairns wear with only coat hanging space for Australian designers, some exclusive to Refuge. Haydon may need to triple his stock order though, in time, setting himself his next goals; “three stores in three years, create my own label and finish that book”. Naturopathic Clinic

Comprehensive, multi-disciplinary practice now servicing the southern corridor of Cairns PhysioHealth Cairns was formed originally in 1993 at the Calanna Medical Centre. In 2002 the clinic had grown from just Karen Winkworth (Owner/Senior Physio) and a part time receptionist, to a full time receptionist and three extra Physios. We subsequently moved to our present location at 26 Toogood Rd and added our visiting Podiatrist Natalie Cristaudo. So we are now in our 10th year at Toogood Rd and we have six Physios, two Massage Therapists and four administration staff along with our Podiatrist. This has enabled us to expand 2 years ago to EDMONTON and provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinarysecond practice to service the southern corridor of Cairns. After 20 years we pride ourselves on being a knowledgeable, multi-skilled physiotherapy workforce within our multidisciplinary practice. Professional development is considered to be of great importance at Physio health and our Physios are regularly training and up skilling as well as attending local, state and national conferences regularly. All of our Physio’s participate in and are involved with local sports and community events on many different levels. Helen Cooper is also completing her grad certificate in Sports Medicine to compliment her commitment to sport. VINCE JONES Highly respected jazz trumpeter, singer and songwriter Vince Jones is very much looking forward to his return to Tanks Arts Centre. He will kick off the 2013 Jazz Up North series on Friday, March 15. The NSW-based performer has played the venue twice before, and says that each time the experience only gets better. A keen environmentalist, he is very fond of the beautiful venue. “There’s an amazing energy at Tanks,” he says. “I love that whole attitude of recycling behind the centre – that act of turning an old structure into a performance space.” Vince is well qualified to identify good venues in which to play. Over his lengthy career he has performed in hundreds of rooms, in Australia and overseas. He is a compulsive performer and his recording career has so far produced 14 full length albums with global sales topping 200,000. Music was part of his life from a very early age. Born in Scotland, he arrived in Australia – in Wollongong – at the age of 11, the product of a culture which prized live performance. His love of jazz began at the age 14, when he heard the Miles Davis album Sketches of Spain. The experience was so powerful, he immediately set about

teaching himself to play the trumpet. “Culturally, in Scotland, music was everywhere,” he says. “There was a lot of jazz, Scottish folk, Irish folk, and brass band music. My father was heavily involved with brass bands. For my dad, it was a release from the daily grind. He would work his job every day, and then come home and play the piano, or arrange something for the band. Britain was very musical around the 50s and the 60s. In Australia, when we arrived, it was quite different. For Vince, the matter of music is a complex combination of technique, emotion, and something close to mysticism. His approach is quite cerebral – the role of the musician in society is a matter that occupies him often. “It’s a strange phenomenon, music,” he says. “My ambition was never to be an entertainer. I respect entertainers, of course, but to me ‘entertainment’ always meant something that exists primarily to distract the punter from his daily disappointments. I’m always looking for a deeper kind of resonance than that.” Even though he shies away from the basic concept of entertainment, Vince’s approach to live performance shares many

TaNK Ks

of the ground rules of good showmanship. “Deciding what to play in a show is mainly a dynamic thing,” he says. “You know, you don’t want to do three heavy songs in a row, or three fast songs, or three songs that are all lyrically aggressive. You have to try to make a sound collage out of the set-list. You know, do a song about the environment, then one about the banks,

then, I don’t know, one about moon-Juneyou. I’ve just written a song about two Buddhists I know who going through a divorce – it’s fascinating, watching their very different approach to the process.” Vince is known as much for his skilful reinterpretations of jazz standards as he is for his originals. He chooses his material carefully, in a way that is as much concerned with the inner meaning of a song as its shape. “Good songs are like cream – they rise to the top,” he says. “There are a few songs I don’t think should be done, because they’ve already been done definitively. It’s like doing Beatles covers – only the Beatles can do the Beatles properly. I think a lot of singers don’t really concern themselves with that, you know, mystical side of the music – they just want to sing a melody! My job is to find the really good songs – songs about social issues, perhaps, songs with the elements we call art. With good songs, they ring in our heads, and they ring in our hearts.” Vince Jones launches the 2013 Jazz Up North Series at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday, March 15. This totally enriches their already popular reputation as it creates more dining versatility and caters to a mosaic of options. The dinner menu starts from 5 pm until 11 pm (Monday –Thursday & Sunday) and then for Friday and Saturday nights it is open until 11:30 pm. This is great for late night diners. The Coffee Club has one of the hottest locations, near the night markets and overlooking the Lagoon and esplanade. A perfect place for dinner and of course people watching as it is lively, busy and fun. The atmosphere has a casual, relaxed vibe and the staff are friendly and attentive.

There is also inside seating if you prefer nice comfy couches and intimacy. We were recommended the Mezze Platter for two for our entrĂŠe. Priced at $29.90, this Mediterranean style platter is a tower of prawn and chicken skewers and haloumi cheese on a bed of seasoned chips with lemon pepper calamari. Surrounding it are delicious warm Kalamata olives, marinated mushrooms, souvlaki bread and a decadent caviar dip with a lovely Greek style salad that adds zesty freshness. We had to pause before the main so with a glass of red wine we enjoyed the atmosphere and what intrigued me is the interesting mix of people at The Coffee Club. There were families having dinner together, couples sipping wine and sharing a moment, friends chatting over coffees and cakes, some with meals and others with a coffee, such diversity in dining. The dinner menu is a clever selection of classic meals that caters to every taste. The meals are delicious, honest, fairly priced from $19.90 - $ 24.90 and very generous. For the main I chose the

Spicy Plum Pork fillet which was served with a creamy mash and crisp vegetables, the pork was tender and the plum sauce perfect. My friend had the Grilled Pesto Salmon which was cooked to perfection. To cap it off the desserts are divine and of course a coffee to help digest. So if you only know The Coffee Club for its coffee, treat your taste buds to a really delightful dinner experience on the Esplanade.

OUR SUBURBS

The secret history of Edge Hill The Cairns suburb of Edge Hill has a fascinating history that many people may not remember. From a Sikh crematorium to Chinese market gardens, the history is rich. The area also played an important role during WW2 with the construction of fuel tanks and also a US army base. Here are just a few photos, and if you have more from this area the Cairns Historical Museum would love to hear from you.

I’ve got the moves like Tanna

Travel

Vanuatu is a collection of 83 Pacific Islands and no visit is complete unless you explore beyond the capital, Port Vila on the Island of Efate. Of course most of us don’t have the time to visit them all, so if you have to choose one, make it Tanna. Located in the south of the archipelago, the people still follow traditional ways of life and some communities continue to worship unlikely gods, such as His Royal Highness Prince Philip.

The road was potholed, muddy and bumpy and in fact at some points I think calling it a road was an exaggeration. The evocative sights and smells along the way kept our minds from the discomfort of our jostling backsides and the sheer joy of the people, both adults and children who, without fail, waived and called out greetings as we passed, kept our spirits high. Eventually we found ourselves on the vast volcanic plain in the shadow of the smoking giant, a grey-black, wind whipped desert that conjured images of the moon to our minds. Depending on its mood, know locally as “the old man”, or “the angry hag”, Mt Yasur is described as the world’s most accessible volcano because you can drive to within 100 meters or its rim. After a 10-minute walk we reach the rim and look down into its fiery heart. A big volcanic explosion

Visions of Vanuatu The Vanuatu archipelago offers a unique experience for visitors, not only as a relaxing getaway but also to behold some of the world’s most spectacular and active volcanoes. This stunning South Pacific escape offers guests the choice of some truly unique experiences. Explore these majestic sights during the day and escape back to your tropical paradise at night.

© Vanuatu Tourism Board

There is something about a wild south Pacific island that plucks at your very soul. It is like being in a charming tourism time warp. Infrastructure is limited, roads are rough, luxury hotels a rarity and the people seemed to be astonished and delighted that tourists find their island worthy of visiting. Tanna has it all. Black sands and black magic, cannibalism and cargo cults, volcanoes and village life. The writer Paul Theroux calls Tanna “the oddest island” because of its mysticism, geography and cultural oddities. For me it is adventure travel at its very best! Tanna also has the largest living organism on Earth; a giant banyan tree that covers an area larger than a football field. Fortunately for us, a friend was living in Vanuatu, working on an AusAid project and had access to a four-wheel drive on Tanna. Arriving at White Grass Airport we were met by a colourful circus of locals driving four-wheel drives, but not ours. Things move on “island time” here, but eventually our car arrived and after an enthusiastic round of greetings and handshakes we were on our way to what was to be the highlight of Tanna, the awesome Volcano, Mt Yasur.

is a truly awesome thing to behold. It starts with a boom, which is sure to make you jump and your heart hammer and then the lava bombs fly, swirling hundreds of meters into the night sky, some as large as a small car, trailing a jet stream of molten red. It goes on for hours, every few minutes, and is a mesmerizing natural show of incredible power. Further down the road, actually let’s call it a goat track, is Port Resolution a beautiful turquoise harbor, christened by Captain Cook in 1774. There our some wonderful beaches here to explore and hot springs as well. The local village is story book picturesque and as we drove across the grass to the centre of the village the first person we met was Sarah who had been expecting our arrival. Our hosts from the Jungle Oasis at Mt Yasur had called ahead so that Sarah could open her restaurant, which was little more than a thatched hut, sand floors and one large table. After spending the morning on the glorious beach we headed back to Sarah’s to find an array of fresh food laid out for us. So fresh that the chicken for the meat dish had been freshly caught that morning. The chicken turned out to be completely inedible, tough as an old boot and impossible to chew. When one of my friends enquired as to what the small round things were, she was horrified to discover they were the eggs that the poor bird had not had the chance to lay. For the sake of our teeth and stomachs, we decided to stick with the plentiful fruit and veggies. People from Vanuatu are not just healthy, they’re remarkably content. According to a survey back in 2006, they are the happiest people on Earth, not bad for a nation that is ranked close to the bottom of the table when it comes to gross domestic product.

Family Law

by Jennifer Hartley - Associate Lawyer

THE YOUNG GUNS THAT EMERGE FROM SEPARATED FAMILIES I wish to share with the reader, my experience as the Independent Children’s Lawyer in parenting cases. In a recent study, children were interviewed about being represented in proceedings. They were asked what constituted a good lawyer. They wanted someone who took time to get to know them and someone they trusted. When we enter a child’s world, we enter a world of often extraordinary imagination. In the absence of relevant information, some children fill the gaps in their understanding with erroneous interpretations in the changes in their family. They may imagine, for example, that the parent who left no longer loves them or that they themselves caused the breakdown of the relationship. I have read countless Family Reports. Some reports reveal that the children are disturbed by the level of anger between their parents, yet they can relate to each of them, positively, as individuals. I read the reports and wish I could speak to Mum and Dad and ask them to understand, more fully, what it’s like to be either their daughter or their son right now. The chances are, they have read the report and they have not “heard” what their children

are saying and, at some level, reject what their children are saying. “The report writer got it wrong.” The parents do not realise that they are distracted from their parenting responsibilities by their preoccupation with each other and the turmoil that typically surrounds family separation. I have observed how some economically disadvantaged children actively engage with their circumstances to develop alternative ways of participating in social events. They try to protect their parents financial situation by finding ways of excluding themselves from school related activities, such as outings that involve additional expense. Unfortunately, the availability of funding is a practical constraint. This is something that must be rectified if children are truly going to be heard. The delicacy of the subject demands that appropriate and adequate funding be made available. I have had the pleasure of working with child counsellors, Family Court reporters and other professionals who are just as committed as I, to ensure that the children have been well and truly heard. I have observed the Family Court Judges’ and the Federal Magistrates’ anguish over

their decisions. They want to get it right for those children. When I am appointed as the Independent Children’s Lawyer, I feel that there is so much to do but so little time. Some of the children I have represented, had barely entered the world when it turned upside down for them. Some have lived, for periods of time, in the women’s shelter and in housing commission homes. Some had to rely on charity to receive Christmas hampers. I recall one young boy said that when he played music it brought out the emotions. He is now a budding musician. Some of these children did not see the separation as a barrier, but as an opportunity to grow. From observation, some of these children, in fact, parented their parents. It is important for the team working with the children, to ensure that the children learn more beneficial and effective ways of relating and thinking about conflict resolution, so that they might not struggle

76 I CairnsLife

in their own relationships as adults. Most of the parents wished for their children to have happy and healthy relationships and acknowledged that the current situation did not support those wishes. I have seen many of my child clients mature into awesome adults – a teacher, a lawyer, an engineer, and one very talented musician. Some are parents who are now inspiring their children. It is heartening to see that these young children have become “the young guns” – leaders. One of the clients was awarded “Young Australian of the Year”. It is so rewarding to see these young children, rise above their circumstances; and be motivated to achieve their dreams. They love to hear the tips that some others have shared with me in getting there. The Young Australian of the Year says, “Follow your passion and take risks and it should all work out.”

Finance

IS IT TIME TO GET BACK INTO THE SHAREMARKET? Actually the time to get into the share market was when the most people where selling out of the share market; in either March 2009, July 2010, July to December 2011 and then June & July 2012. If you were a seller at any of those times; I am sorry you did. If it was because the media or the bloke next door told you to sell, then shame on you for listening. If it was your adviser then sack them. Example: If you purchased $100,000 Commonwealth Bank Shares (CBA) in March 2009. They would be worth $257,0001 today; plus you would have received approximately $17,000 per year income (grossed up). March 2009! Who would have purchased any shares then? The headlines where saying, “The End of Capitalism”. You may as well say, “The End of all Religions” – Never ever going to occur. “Hang-on”, you say, “CBA were valued at $62 per share in November 2007 and

they are only $671 per share in 2013”. Well… along the way they paid approximately 6% income (grossed up) and today its 6.5% pa income. Good investment? – Yes! February 2013 the US index: Dow Jones and SnP just exceeded their 2007 highs. The Aussie All Ords at the peak November 2007 was 6,800. As I am writing its 5,050 – 5 years on. Will it get back to this peak? Of course and that means another 36% gain from today. When will it reach this peak?... 2015?...2016? Who knows but it will! Figure 1. All Ords March 2007 to Feb 2013. We have been struck with fear over the hype in Greece, Europe and the Fiscal Cliff since 2009. What has occurred was serious and game changing for investing. However certain basic investment principals have always applied and still apply. If you haven’t done so, start

applying these basic investment principals today. As humans we have always created, grown and achieved. This has occurred and will continue to occur. Investment markets will Grow – Plateau – Over Heat – Shrink and Contract – Fall – Bottom Out – etc etc. To all investors get back on the horse or just get on the horse. It’s not a game of darts though – Please get advice. Also, choose an adviser that can use both

managed funds and direct shares – you need the options. Final tip! Did you know you can own direct shares in your superannuation account? If your super doesn’t allow it or your adviser can’t do it – shop around. You should have the option! Prosperous Investing! Immigration

New Zealand Citizens in Australia Many New Zealand Citizens present here in Australia are unaware of their Australian immigration status. On arrival in Australia, most New Zealanders are automatically granted a Special Category Visa (SCV). This visa is a temporary visa which allows the holder to remain and work in Australia indefinitely for as long as they remain a New Zealand Citizen. After arrival at an airport in Australia New Zealand Citizens simply present their New Zealand passport for immigration clearance and they are considered to have applied for the Special Category Visa (SCV). Subject to health and character considerations they automatically receive the SCV which is recorded electronically, the only evidence of the SCV is the entry stamp in their passport. It is not necessary for a New Zealand Citizen to become an Australian permanent resident as the Special

Category Visa allows for an indefinite stay with full work rights. On 26th February 2001 however, in conjunction with a new bilateral social security arrangement between Australia and New Zealand, changes were made regarding New Zealand Citizens in Australia. It was announced that any New Zealand Citizen who arrived after 26th February 2001 will need to apply for permanent residency if they wish to access certain Australian social security payments, obtain Australian Citizenship or sponsor family members into Australia for permanent residence. Under transitional provisions these changes do not affect New Zealand Citizens who were in Australia on the 26th February 2001 as SCV holders or who were absent on this date but spent twelve months in Australia in the 2 years prior to that date. If you are a New Zealand Citizen who was in

Australia on these dates then you are eligible to apply directly for Australian Citizenship, may access certain social security payments and may sponsor family members for permanent

residence to Australia. If you are a New Zealand Citizen who arrived in Australia on or after 27th February 2001 and you intend to apply for Australian Citizenship, access certain social security payments or sponsor family members to Australia for permanent residence then you will need to apply for and have a permanent residency visa granted first. There are various permanent residency visa options that may be able and you can seek advice from a registered migration agent to discuss your visa options. At 30 June 2012, an estimated 647 863 New Zealand citizens were present in Australia.

Young Gun

Troy Cavallaro Troy Cavallaro of Allaro Homes is young, driven and knows only too well the importance of technology and how when used smartly, it can help businesses dream big and reach their full potential. Troy Cavallaro has always been passionate about business and technology, so when Cyclone Larry left him stranded in Cairns on a visit home seven years ago, he saw opportunities within the family business that would revolutionise the building industry not just in North Queensland but also Australia wide. Growing up in a family of builders, Troy’s love of technology, business and photography took his career in a different direction. Calling Brisbane home, by day Troy fast earned a reputation for his deftness solving technical IT issues, while by night he rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous as a celebrity photographer. “It was a fun, glamorous and connected lifestyle but I was beginning to burn out. I knew my parents – Wayne and Jenny Cavallaro – had this vision for the company and they wanted me to be a part of it. “Once I started working and I understood the industry better, I realised it wasn’t what I thought it would be. The architecture, the technology, the maths – everything intrigued me.” Combining his technical skills with his father’s building experience and vision, within months Troy had transformed Allaro Homes’ back end into a sophisticated, technology driven platform. Not content with just this, Troy was also looking for opportunities that would enhance the customer journey. “Clients are more tech savvy these days and are looking for more from their builder. I wanted to use the technology that was

available and create something unique and special to meet this demand,” he says. From this the Allaro Design Suite was born. “Building a home is a lot of fun, and the Allaro Design Suite embraces this. Users can store and share their ideas using the Allaro Pinboard, seek inspiration from hundreds of designs in the Portfolio, keep a track of their building selections using the Check List and finally see their home come to life using 3D rendering software.” Making up the fourth element in the Allaro Design Suite is Allaro 3D – a cinematic experience that allows the client to view their home in 3D render. “Allaro 3D offers a true representation of what the client’s home will be like once completed and it can be shared across a number of IT platforms including mobiles devices to show friends and family,” he adds. Other technologies such as augmented reality have also piqued Troy’s interest, adding another layer to the builder’s IT offering. His biggest challenge, however, has been developing a patented software program that will form the very core of Allaro Homes as it puts in place franchise plans that will see it grow beyond the Cairns and Townsville regions it is currently based. “Once we knew we were going to develop this software, we could remove the restraints of other programs and do anything we wanted. We have spent five years working on the program and are now ready to implement this.” For Troy, this next phase will be extremely important. “We hope that one day we will be able to export this software internationally. The construction industry is still relatively low tech and there are a lot of areas where technology would benefit – this software achieves this and more.” There is no doubt Troy is passionate about technology. Allaro Homes has always been known as a progressive building company and its ability to adapt to change and adopt continually evolving technology is what give clients the confidence their home will be planned to perfection.

An increasing number of people are experiencing the pleasures of growing their own food. What better way to stay healthy, stay in tune with nature and instil a lifelong love of gardening in the next generation and now is the time to prepare. March is the time of the year to set up or resurrect the vegie garden or flower garden so that the soil is in top condition when the weather cools in late March, early April ready for planting. If it is a new garden to be set up or your garden needs a top up, Limberlost Landscape Supplies produces a premium garden soil most suited to Tropical North Queensland. Mulching the garden with hay or the less messy sugar cane mulch, both smothers the weeds and protects the soil from too much March rain and starts the rehabilitation process happening. At the same time, dolomite should be applied monthly at

the rate of 1 cup/m² over the hay and watered in. Following this, an application of Rocky Point Active 8 at 1 cup/m² will help to add nutrient and inoculate the soil with beneficial fungi and yeast. No need to dig in, just sit back and let the microbes do their thing as nature intended. Planting can be done after a week, but there is no rush as it is best to wait until the weather is ready that is, the end of the wet season and cooler, less humid temperatures. Another alternative for smaller gardens is the hay bale garden. Limberlost can advise how to set up this novel little garden, provide all the products and a fact sheet, with step by step instructions. Weather dependant, we at Limberlost Nursery annually create a hay bale garden so visitors can be pleasantly surprised. Happy Garden! Neil

Tips on what you should do when you are having your Residential Property valued for Mortgage Security Purposes. Hello readers and welcome to this month’s edition. This month as suggested in the heading above we will be discussing what to do and not to do when trying to achieve the highest value for your residential property. 1. Before the valuation inspection is arranged take a good look at your entire property and observe what needs to be cleaned and amended. Do yourself a favour and clean up any junk in the yard and tidy the lawns and gardens. You would be amazed at how many properties I have inspected where the client wants a valuation as high as possible and the first thing you see is lawns over grown, landscaping in a poor state and rubbish in the gardens. Pick up a rake, shovel, what ever you can get your hands on and CLEAN man CLEAN. First impressions are so important. 2. Internally make sure beds are made, no clothes on floor, a total clean, neat appearance

is your aim and make sure it does not look cluttered. You do not have to spend any money just present the property at its best at the time of the valuation inspection. If you are going to spend money for valuation or to sell the property there are a few main topics to be considered. Does any part of the property need painting, does the kitchen and bathroom look reasonably modern. What landscaping could be done to the property to enhance the appeal. 3. Check with your bank what valuers are on the banks panel, if you disagree with the valuation and have evidence to back your complaint, at least you know you might have the option to use another valuer. This may cost you more money it depends on the financial institution. 4. Know what has sold in your area that in rent times that is comparable to your property. Check with the valuers if they know about the sales you have found out about. 99% of the time the valuer will know about the sale and details of

93 I CairnsLife

that property. However if you know of a sale in recent times that might help your situation then there is no harm in letting the valuer know about it. 5. Make sure you have a good idea of what value you need for mortgage security and have a understanding of the market to make sure your expectations are not unrealistic. Best option is to look at what is selling in your area at what price and if you can as discussed above know what has sold and for what price in the current market. In summary to achieve the highest value possible a well presented property that looks its best is imperative. There will be always external circumstances that will heavily affect the valuation and you cannot do anything about that. Just concentrate on what you can do before the valuation inspection.

All the best and if you need any assistance in property advice please do not hesitate to call my office on 40172355.

EDR Building Designs

Since establishing EDR Building Designs ten years ago, Ernest Raso has gained an enviable reputation in the industry. Now with offices both on the Atherton Tablelands and in Cairns, he has developed an extensive insight into his craft and prides himself on providing innovative solutions to meet his client’s needs. Together with younger brother Shane who heads the Cairns branch of the operation, this award-winning designer is about to be showcased in an upcoming television series. After finishing school, Ernest began working in the building industry while completing his Bachelor of Building and Design at CQU by distant education. Once qualified, he opened the doors to his own business on Mulgrave Road in 2003, with Shane later joining the team. Ernest says his decision to go into business at just 22 years of age was influenced in part by his upbringing. “We were brought up by self-employed parents and didn’t like the idea of working for other people. I’ve worked at a number of firms but much prefer having my own practice,” he says. Based primarily in Tolga on the Atherton Tablelands, EDR Building Designs has made a huge impression on the industry resulting in numerous awards over the years. With word of mouth a large part of their business, they cater to a diverse clientele including residential, multi-residential, government and commercial projects as well as some industrial work. Shane, who has also completed a Bachelor in Building Design says, “we

enjoy what we do because every project is unique. Every client has different expectations and needs.” And while they specialize in all aspects of building design, EDR’s particular focus is environmentally sustainable projects that compliment the natural surroundings. “We’re a custom design firm,” Ernest says. “We don’t do repeats or kits home and we target the higher end of the market.” Providing a personalized service with a creative edge, the brothers say they are fortunate to have remained busy throughout the challenging economy. In fact, they are so confident in the business’s future that they made the decision to open up another branch in Cairns last year. Soon to be featured in an upcoming episode of Australia’s Top Homes on Fox TV, Ernest admits his age sometimes presented a challenge in the early years. “Starting out I tended to get some of the jobs others didn’t want and fees weren’t at the rate they should have been. But that’s turned around now that we’ve got a lot more experience behind us.” He also points out that the majority of clients are searching for fresh and modern ideas. “We have the latest technology with walk-through computer aided design and 3D modeling,” he says. “Our business is all about customer service. We focus on making people happy and have in turn been rewarded with repeat business.”

Does your family homes match your current lifestyle? Has your family’s lifestyle changed recently? Have your kids moved out to attend university or got married making you an ‘empty nester’ or do you simply want less work around your home so that you can spend more time enjoying some R & R. Maybe you’re a young couple starting your own family and have outgrown your current home. You may have been living in a 2 bedroom unit before having a family and then find you have to upsize to a 3 or 4 bedroom home to allow space for the family to grow. Building a new, larger family home minimises the maintenance costs over the time the family is expanding. It also lets us plan the design to cater for the change in our family’s needs.

Everyone’s living requirements vary as we adjust to our continually changing lifestyle and family. Statistics show that we tend to move homes on an average of every 5 years which reflects the changes in our family’s needs. I know a lot of families where Mum and Dad still have the large house that screams for lots of fix ups and maintenance and of course, lots of cleaning. As we get a little older the last thing we want to do is spend all weekend cleaning the house and doing the gardening. Most people still want their own private and secure space so a good option is to build a smaller home, on a smaller block of land. A smaller home has much lower day to day running costs and can leave

Roslyn Smith Affiniti Designer Homes

you time and money to do the things you didn’t have time for when you were busy raising the family. The more space you have the more stuff you find to fill it up!! Its worth looking at what is important to each of us in our current family requirements and whether our home is able to cope

with any changes. If not, maybe you should be looking for a home that will cope with those changes for more than 5 years. It could be either upsizing or downsizing what you have now. Most new homes (if looked after well) will not require any major maintenance for at leats 10 years. There are some great sub divisions in and around Cairns with fantastic facilities like walking and bicycle trails, parks, gardens, BBQs and more. There are many sub divisions that offer great facilities with small and large blocks of land for a variety of lifestyles. Ask about some of the new estates and see what combinations of land sizes are available and you may be surprised what’s on offer.

Alan is fresh from trip to furniture shows in Sydney and scouring furniture design warehouses and studios. “Now is not the time to be “matchymatchy” and super scripted - making everything in your space ultracoordinated to mind numbing detail.” “It is essentially a sophisticated blending of style types and materials to create a look that is layered and very appealing. Various techniques make this possible. He suggests to start with one style and then add elements of another to get the look of today’s popular interiors. “The combination of classic with contemporary elements looks

refreshingly interesting,” he explains. “A hint of shimmer is trendy these days. Iridescent and glass mosaic tile splashbacks and bathrooms are great examples of our influence in homes at the moment. It looks fantastic! “You can add a touch of glamour with your lighting also. Touches of chrome and mirror are hot right now. “Barrel shades, large or small are the look of the moment, they are modern and sophisticated. This goes for chandeliers or table lamps. “For the last several years, neutral yet sophisticated colour palettes have been popular. This is still the case to a large degree. For example, tones of grey have really been dominating the stage. And sand colours remain popular- trimmed with white is a sharp look. Soft and silvery blue accent walls contrasted with white trim is another smart scheme. It looks particularly good with

chrome and glass accessories. A touch of black adds further degree of dimension to this combination. “At Coast we can’t live without textures. In a restrained contemporary environment for example, a shaggy rug or cushions or woven baskets can adds just the right amount of textural variation to the streamlined surroundings.” “Make the most of our Coast’s free consultation service this month to inject a bit of texture or glamour into your home life!”
