In our December issue, we take a look back at the year that's been and highlight some of the region's most inspiring achievers in our 'Stars of 2012' feature. The team and I were especially excited when Billy Slater (my favourite NRL player) accepted our invitation to grace the cover. Like Billy, many of our stars have made their mark in their chosen professions and gone on to enjoy further success over the last 12 months. It's also the month to get festive and celebrate Christmas - and for the ladies, a wonderful excuse to purchase that new party dress. See all the latest looks for the season in the amazing fashion spread by our talented stylist and my special friend, Amanda Macor (profiled on page 33) who took out the Victorian State Finals at Melbourne Cup last month. Congratulations Amanda we are so proud of you! From the team and I we wish you a Merry Christmas and safe, happy holidays. Jacqui, Jessie, Michael, Lisa, Ingrid and Mary. xx

S T O R Y

By Kate van Eck

A man who needs no introduction in the far north is Melbourne Storm Fullback Billy Slater. Since his NRL debut in 2003, Billy has won nearly every Rugby League accolade on offer including the Clive Churchill and Dally M Medals and The Golden Boot Award for the World Player of the Year. He’s also beaten a number of highly acclaimed sportsmen to be crowned Australia’s Greatest Athlete for two years running. And now, in what may be his most successful season yet, this elite player has enjoyed Premiership, State-of-Origin and Trans-Tasman success. Billy’s career started at the grass-roots level as a four-year-old with the Innisfail Brothers. But due to a change of heart during his teenage years, his future nearly took a much different direction. “At 15 I quit rugby league,” Billy says. “I decided to pursue my other love which is horses and ended up working as a trackwork rider for Gai Waterhouse.” Eventually horse racing’s loss became the NRL’s gain when a rapid growth spurt put Billy out of contention for racing and saw him revert back to his original sporting vocation. Considered by many to be the world’s best fullback, Billy appears to have had a dream run. What began with a 20 hour drive from Innisfail to Brisbane for trials, quickly resulted in him being offered a contract with Storm feeder-team the Brisbane Norths. After two standout seasons he was recruited to the Storm’s full time squad where he’s remained for his entire career to date. From there he’s been regularly selected at state and national level where he continues to go from strength to strength. But despite all the glory, his career hasn’t been without its challenges including an Origin injury this year that resulted in him being sidelined for seven weeks. All in all 2012 has delivered a series of highlights in Billy’s career. The first of which was breaking the record of the retired Rhys Wesser to be named most prolific try-scoring fullback in over 100 years. But while individual achievements are rewarding, it’s clear

that what Billy values most about his profession is the teamwork. When interviewed by ABC radio after the Storm’s premiership victory he said, “It’s just a pleasure playing with this lot. You see a lot of highlights of people scoring tries and doing special things but the work ethic in this group of players and the willingness to do all that hard work is exceptional.” Now a married father of two, Billy spends much of his spare time giving back to the game. He’s a regular contributor to Canterbury Junior Football Club in Melbourne and also supports a number of other junior sport programs across the country. Admired by many across all sporting pursuits he was recently described by AFL legend Sam Newman as "the best player in any football code in the world." And, after just returning from a trip to South Africa with his wife Nicole that included swimming with Great White Sharks, it seems Billy is just as daring off the field as he is on.

Full Of Heart

Boutiques

& Hidden Secrets

Fashion Find: The Tropical North’s Best Kept Secret

Everyone has a hidden secret awaiting them at Annie’s – enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Not only will you discover an eclectic and exclusive range of ladies wear in sizes 8 to 28 - from pretty cotton kaftans to classic corporate wear and party chic – there is something for everyone and every occasion. Add to that, Annie’s amazing range of accessories – and just like the fashion, they are fun and funky, yet classy and very affordable. Identified by its pink heart logo, Annie’s Ladies Boutiques in Spence Street Cairns and Palm Cove are all about loving the woman you are or want to be. Owner Annie Gillow, who admits she is a little eccentric, is passionate about her shops and the clothing ranges she carefully searches out. She is also adamant about fair pricing and coupled with a strong buying power, thanks to the volume associated in stocking two stores, Annie is able to achieve affordability for high quality garments. This benefit is always passed onto her customers who she fondly refers to as ‘my ladies’. According to Annie, her boutique dream began about four years ago in Palm Cove where she established Annie’s clothing business by day that then transformed to a restaurant by night. This was a winning combination but an exhausting one 10 I CairnsLife

for Annie and just last year she decided to do away with the food service and concentrate all efforts on her boutiques. In so doing she moved her Palm Cove shop to a smaller premises three doors closer to the beach and opened a city boutique in the heart of Cairns. In describing the individual appeal of her two boutiques Annie says the Palm Cove boutique has that tropical romance feel, with its historical paperbark trees and view of the Coral Sea while her Cairns store is smack bang in the CBD and to suit the city shopper, is larger and more practical. While each boutique has its own character and charm Annie says there are factors common to both. According to Annie, first impressions cannot be relied on when it comes to discovering the beauty within Annie’s Ladies Boutiques. “My Palm Cove boutique may appear tiny, but believe me, it is full of coveted items. Cairns on the other hand offers you a larger variety of styles and it too, has its own unique appeal. “There are secrets hidden that you will only discover on your second visit. From a $49 top to the one off original Linda Clark designer party frock, the quirky and also classic Trelise Cooper, the wonderfully classy-casual cottons of One Season, Firefly and Boom Shankar, timeless office and evening wear, clever basics to make everyone's life easy, and much, much more,” she said. Annie also prides herself on a great

team at the helm of her boutiques. “Everyone loves my girls – they know the stores intimately and will find you the perfect garment that will not only make a fashionable statement but boost self confidence and enjoyment. “It is time to strut your stuff and take those compliments,” says Annie. Local public relations consultant and stylist, Pip Miller sums up Annie’s beautifully. “When I need a fun and affordable retail hit, I visit Annie’s. There is a great range of fashionable, funky clothing in cool and colourful cottons as well as those really special exclusive pieces you’ll want to treasure. Annie has a great eye for accessories with an amazing range of handbags and clutch bags, belts, jewellery and scarves. Annie’s is always fresh, always changing yet one thing stays the same – there is something for everyone and everybody.” And don’t worry, men aren’t forgotten with "partner parking" (comfy chair) that is positioned at the

best vantage point. A selection of great coffee shops are also situated close by to both boutiques in case “the other-halves don’t want to play in the shop!” says Annie before adding, “Guys, I will let you in on another little secret – Annie’s offers Gift Vouchers this Christmas that adds 20 per cent to the value of the voucher purchased. For example, when you spend $100 on a gift voucher, we will give you a voucher for $120. This is a great way to earn those extra ‘brownie points’!

Building Change by Alana Campbell

Shaking things up in the building industry has always been a lot of fun for Wayne and Jenny Cavallaro, the husband and wife team behind Allaro Homes and as 2012 draws to a close on what has been an incredible year for the pair, they have their sites firmly set on 2013. Looking back on 2012 there isn’t much Jenny Cavallaro, Cairns Business Women of the Year, would change. It has been a year of real highlights for the woman who works alongside her husband Wayne in the business they have established and grown together for the last 30 years. Allaro Homes (formerly Better Homes Queensland) is one of the most revered builders in north Queensland, known not only for its quality custom built homes, but also its warm approach and family-like team. For Jenny, this has been the cornerstone to the success of Allaro Homes. “Reputations are built from the inside out and Allaro truly reflects the business, our beliefs and the people who work here,” she says proudly. Jenny believes the transition from Better Homes Queensland to Allaro Homes was organic and almost

Allaro Homes

inevitable, allowing the company to put in place the framework that would allow it to grow and meet the changing demands of a more tech-savvy driven consumer keen to engage in the build process very early on. “In July we showed north Queensland Allaro Homes, but this was just the start. Opportunities come along and you either see it as a chance to grow, better yourself and exhaust it or you miss out.” Wayne and Jenny’s focus over the last six months has been to drive the new brand, Allaro Homes. This was their first step in a long-term plan to establish a franchise model that could be replicated across Australia. “If you can make it succeed once, it is just about duplication. We pride ourselves on the personal and individualised service we offer based on our own moral and ethical beliefs and we want to

share this with the rest of Australia,” Jenny adds. Wayne and Jenny are now even closer to achieving this goal with the recent development of the Allaro Design Suite, which was the idea of their son Troy Cavallaro, who also works in the business. The suite is smart, fun, user-friendly and takes the home building experience to a whole new level. “Building a home is a lot of fun, and the Allaro Design Suite embraces this,” Wayne goes on to explain. “Users are able to store and share their ideas using the pinboard, seek inspiration from hundreds of designs in the portfolio, keep a track of their building selections using the check list and my personal favourite – see a concept come to life using 3D rendering software.” Taking this even further in 2013, will be the introduction of Allaro 3D – a cinematic

15 I CairnsLife

experience that will bring a new home to life using sophisticated 3D software that can be shared across a number of IT platforms including mobile devices. “This will be a virtual way of seeing a new home and will be an experience that can be shared with friends and family. This has never been done before on this scale and will give clients the confidence their dream home is exactly as they planned – to perfection,” Wayne says. Wayne and Jenny continue to prove what many have known all along that they are trendsetters, not followers. They are passionate, motivated and driven to push the boundaries with one clear objective – to put the client first and ensure every home is planned to perfection.

Dr Allan Dale

Regional Development Australia Looking After The Region’s Future… RDA FNQ & TS Shining Star Of 2012 If the acronym RDA FNQ&TS is unfamiliar, now is the time to take note. As one of the shining stars of 2012, the community-based Regional Development Australia Far North Queensland and Torres Strait (RDA FNQ&TS) is focused on its endeavour to provide one very loud and unified regional voice. A relatively new organisation, since its launch in 2010, the RDA FNQ&TS exists to bring together, lead and support the many organisations and individuals of this region focusing on this region and its future prosperity. RDA FNQ&TS builds regional consensus about the most critical things that need to happen via combined State, Federal, Local Government and industry action. RDA FNQ&TS believes the region must take charge of its own destiny and to treat both the State and Federal Governments and other major investors as the region’s key

development partners. It takes a direct negotiation approach right to the heart of the policy and budget processes of both Governments and the boardrooms of corporate Australia. Associate Professor Allan Dale, having been jointly appointed by both State and Commonwealth Regional Development Ministers, is more than qualified to reside as Chairman at the helm of RDA FNQ&TS. As a Far North Queenslander with a great passion for this region, Allan is the right person at the right time for this influential role. As the current Research Leader on Tropical Regional Development at James Cook University’s Cairns Institute, Allan’s research work means that he is deeply across some of the region’s biggest challenges, including major project decision making, Indigenous and agricultural sector development, adaptation to climate change and the sustainable management of

the region’s water, energy and natural resources. His historical understanding of the region is equally deep. Having grown up at Trinity Beach, the five brothers in Allan’s family have collectively worked in nearly every sector in the Far North’s economy, including the pastoral, fishing, forestry, mining, aviation, agricultural and tourism industries. Over many years, his parents, Val and Harry Dale also deeply served the community through Naval Cadets (TS Endeavour), War Widows, Red Cross and other civic roles. His own work history across Cape York, the Gulf and Torres Strait also means Allan thinks “whole of region”. He believes that Cairns relies on its hinterland economy as much as the hinterland relies on Cairns. Before joining JCU, many may also remember Allan leading Terrain NRM, the community-based natural resource body for the Wet Tropics. He grew that not-for-profit organisation from a $2million to a $15 million dollar annual tunrover in less than five years, mainly by making the case for and delivering sound government and private sector investment in the region. This included the very successful $200 million, Reef Rescue Program, recently lauded by the Commonwealth as its flagship program in securing big environmental outcomes through industry innovation. It was Allan’s experience in the halls of Government in the deep South, however, that convinced him to come home, and to tackle the real challenges facing the region on home turf. With two stints in the State Government dealing with big natural resource and

development issues, Allan became convinced that regions waiting for Government action will be waiting a long time. To make things happen, regions need to build the evidence for action and then invite Governments in as development partners. Dr Dale said this last year in particular has provided many insights, changes and challenges for the RDA FNQ&TS. “While the Cairns economy is making a strong comeback from the GFC and the impact of the high Aussie dollar, the regional economy now requires strengthening, diversification and reinforcement to stay positive and to prevent a boom-bust future. “The RDA FNQ&TS’s Regional Road Map has identified the need for our region to establish a series of complimentary industries (in addition to agriculture, mining and tourism) such as tropical knowledge, digital economy, renewable energy and green-build industries. We also have to revive some of our past marine and aviation sector strengths and attract government and corporate services to share in the region’s outstanding lifestyle values. “ Dr Dale said that while the RDA FNQ&TS is working at implementing its Regional Road Map strategies, his fellow committee members and CEO, Sonja Johnson, share an overarching drive to present a united front on strategy and to directly influence government policy and investment. “I believe the unity of purpose within and across the region has strengthened over the last 18 months, and there is now real cooperation emerging between the various groups with a role to play.”

It’s the stories that make Brothers a star From a glitzy Melbourne Cup lunch to fight night and Dorothy the Dinosaur, Brothers Leagues Club offers a lot more than a punt on the footy or luck at the machines. But it’s not the scope of entertainment that makes the club a star - it’s the stories that take place between its walls. Take the intrepid 90-something who went off on vacation to the Cook Islands ready for anything, thanks to a light-hearted parting gift including naughty night attire. Not to be outdone the feisty gran returned with stories that would make a 60-year-old blush. Then there is the tale of a couple who buy raffle tickets every Wednesday night but can’t always stay until the end of the draw. Rather than see them miss out on a win, doorman Barry has been checking off the tickets and dropping around any winnings on his own time. And for a younger couple discovering the kids’ club was finally a chance to enjoy a meal as adults, knowing the little ones were supervised just metres away. These are just some of the stories CEO Mono Gomez and Promotions Manager Jeff Mizen are aware of. What of young love sparked under the

b Brothers League CluJeff Mizen disco ball at the Under Age Rage, or friendships forged at the famous buffet lunch? Embarrassing childhood memories recounted at countless 21st parties or fond reminiscences shared to ease the sorrow at wakes? Or the tale of a windfall, whether modest or grand, at the pokies or sports bar? “Gaming is just one part of the club’s operations, entertainment is a major focus, that’s why we have been named Best Queensland Entertainment Venue four times, Best Club at the FNQ Awards 12 times and also taken out the Innovation Award for Clubs Queensland,” says Mono. “I can’t put my finger on anything in particular but it’s been a very successful year. We’ve been very focused across the entire demographic, from kids to oldies. We pride ourselves on being a really friendly club, a place for everyone with something for everyone.”

19 I CairnsLife

Jeff adds: “This is a second home to a lot of people. It’s a big part of their lives, catching up with friends, meeting new ones – that’s really, really important interaction.” With 34,000 members, the biggest club outside south-east Queensland, there are plenty of people to meet, whether a casual chat watching race seven at Moonee Valley, a chuckle over a stomped foot at the frequent concerts, or a deep and meaningful over coffee and bingo. Enriching in themselves, each of these meetings has the added impact of contributing to the community. As a not-for-profit organisation Brothers pours its profits into sports clubs, schools, local groups and other worthwhile causes. After growing up in the Northern Territory with her father a jockey and her mother a bookies clerk, racing has always been in Amanda's blood. But it was only later when she tried her hand at millinery while working at a hair salon in Cairns that she managed to combine her creative flair with her love for the industry. “I’ve always had a genuine interest in making other people look and feel the best that they can,” Amanda says. “And in the beginning it worked around having young children and being flexible.” Now with over 20 years in the business, Amanda divides her time between designing, running her salon and various committee commitments. As the name suggest, Brow Babes specializes in custom eyebrow treatments as well as spray tans, lashes, makeup, and image direction – offering the latest technology and techniques to clients, “Our new 30 minute Hydrafacial service can restore youthful, healthy skin and achieve instant lasting results without the fuss or mess of a conventional facial treatment,” she says.

Amanda Macor By Kate van Eck

To say Amanda Macor is a woman of many hats is true in more ways than one. On top of being a stylish fashionista with a successful millinery label, she is also the business owner of Brow Babes and a devoted wife and mother of two. As someone already well respected in local circles, her achievements over the last twelve months are sure to cement her status nationwide.

While Amanda’s work has long been recognized in the racing industry, 2012 has brought a string of successes that’s taken her brand to a whole new level. Her collaboration with Michalenko by Appointment has resulted in the two labels designing for the fashion winners for Cairns Cup, Amateurs and various other race meetings around Australia. “Another highlight was meeting and talking hats with London milliner Philip Treacy and being invited to teach at the 2013 Hats Off To Brisbane Convention,” Amanda says. And just last month at the Myer Fashions on the Field at the Melbourne Cup Spring Racing Carnival, Amanda’s run of luck continued. After being named the first runner-up on Melbourne Cup Day and then winner on Oak’s Day, she then took out the Victorian sash before coming runner-up in the National Final. “It just goes to show no matter who you are, what your age if you put yourself out there and dress for yourself, good things can and do happen,” she says. And to top off an incredible trip, Amanda was also featured in Grazia magazine as their "Favorite Fashionista" of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Despite the fact that she has very little left to prove, Amanda still has ambitious plans for the future. “I live and breathe our culture and I’m constantly updating our skills and searching for innovative products and treatments,” she says. “I hope to continue to provide the best I can to our clients and hopefully expand the business further.” Brow Babes Shop 14 Oceana Walk, 62 Grafton Street Cairns Ph 07 4041 6840

Peter Rossi & Charmaine Heyer Far from a nine ‘till five job, Peter and Charmaine’s passion for photography knows no boundaries. As owners of Highlights Photography, these highly skilled professionals have a true connection and passion for their craft. Yet despite their extensive experience, they say their work is strongly guided by their subject as they attempt to capture not only an image but the hopes and dreams of an individual.

Apart from the many awards adorning the shelves of their Cairns studio, what stands out most is the friendly, inviting atmosphere. “It’s an intimate process so we want people to feel special and aware of our many styles,” says Charmaine. In fact, Peter and Charmaine spend a great deal of time getting to know their clients and encourage them to be actively involved in the creative process. “We begin with a flattering picture to capture the family – and for some people that’s enough,” says Peter. “But wherever possible we like to take it a step further by incorporating the family’s interests or slant on life and turning it into a piece of art.” Peter and Charmaine go to extreme lengths to tailor every project to the client by taking into consideration their personality right through to their choice of décor. One interesting example of their creative insight is evident in a piece created for twin sisters. Separated by adoption, the image captures the twins reunited in adulthood sitting on a couch jointly holding a photo of themselves as children. Adding to the symbolism are two very distinct backgrounds, which are layered behind the women to represent their different upbringings – one in the country and one in the city. 2012 has certainly been a rewarding year for Peter and Charmaine with

34 I CairnsLife

each taking out a number of industry awards, Not only was Charmaine named the Canon AIPP Illustrative Photographer of the Year for the fourth time, she was also awarded the title of Creative Asia Photographer of the Year. “I was so overwhelmed when I won the trip to Paris – I was laughing and crying at the same time,” she says. And Peter certainly hasn’t come away empty handed after taking out a number of awards this year including the Creative Asia Portrait Photographer of the Year. Although focussed on taking their work to the next level, Peter and Charmaine are also mindful that customers can be limited by time and budget restraints. “It’s about adjusting the style to suit the individual,” says Peter. “Some people like their art to be more straight forward while others like to explore the possibilities.” So, in order to give more people an insight into the “Highlights Experience” Peter and Charmaine are offering an introductory sitting with a 25cm print for only $99. “I get extremely excited creating something for somebody that they will always cherish,” says Peter. “Something that encapsulates the emotion that they were feeling at the time.” By Kate van Eck Highlights Photography 7 Dennis Close, Cairns 4870 Phone: (07) 4054 5686 www.highlights.com.au

“Take for example a body wrap. It’s a way to detox, removing excess water and targeting fatty tissue. When people start to lose weight they feel better and gain energy, which improves their health mentally and physically. “Everything we do here has a specific target, all focused on improving one’s well being. There is an actual physical change that takes place. Day spas that focus purely on ‘pampering’ clients are sadly closing their doors.” Jennifer admits she has experienced many of the pitfalls of the industry herself. She started out designing and building day spas before opening 14 throughout Australia and Asia, but for various reasons they didn’t survive and Jennifer consolidated her holdings to focus on her current spa. “2012 has been our toughest year and in some respects our business has grown because others haven’t survived. But our clients wouldn’t keep returning if we didn’t do what we do well. You continually have to change with technology to keep growing,” she says.

Jennifer Bowden Beauty Spa Club International Jennifer Bowden has seen a lot of changes in the day spa industry since she opened a day spa a decade ago. What hasn’t changed is her no-nonsense approach that brings about a real difference for her clients. “Ten years ago day spas were seen as a luxury or something you did for a special occasion or while on vacation,” she says. “Today people are a lot more savvy, they want more value for their dollar. They don’t want to feel better because of some ladida pricey treatment, they want a real change.”

An holistic approach without the “ladida”

Jennifer’s current business, Beauty Spa Club International at The Pier, takes an holistic approach to health and beauty – improving a person’s health through their wellbeing. In practice this means there is a purpose behind every treatment.

39 I CairnsLife

One of those “technologies” is the Skin Remodeling System, for a non-surgical facelift. It combines several widely recognised “age reversal” technologies, which previously had to be applied separately in a long and tedious process. “There are currently only three of these units in Queensland, to have one in Cairns is a real benefit to the people of TNQ. “For their first treatment, we do one side of the client’s face and let them compare in a mirror. It’s amazing – the treated side is what we like to think we look like.” Of course the treatment continues to the other side, “we wouldn’t let people walk out lopsided,” Jennifer laughs. Obviously there is a lot more to day spas than many people expect - from remedial massage to facials targeting skin conditions. But never fear, there are still plenty of options for a spot of pampering, after all a break from the hustle and bustle is also a key to better health.

Affectionately known as the Queen of Cupcakes, Lyndsey Crossland is the proud owner of the only dedicated cupcake specialty store in Cairns. Since establishing Cupcake Creations four years ago, it seems that serving freshly baked products direct to the public is just a small slice of what this industrious woman has to offer. Now in 2012, she has seen her career come full circle – returning to her teaching roots to run a school holiday course in cake decoration. Born and raised in Cairns, Lyndsey initially worked as a pre-school teacher which included a stint overseas before finding her true calling. “When I returned to Cairns I wanted a change. I knew that cupcake stores were becoming popular and I have always loved baking so I decided to dive in and give it a go,” she says. Inspired by her parents who are also business owners, she has now realized a lifelong dream of becoming her own boss. “My parents have been such amazing role models for my sister and I – and now I couldn't imagine going back to work for someone.” Positioned in the Civic Shopping Centre, Cupcake Creations gives customers the feeling of stepping back in time. The retro designed, lolly-pink décor with jars of sweets and tiered cake stands adorning the counter, caters to every child’s (and big kid’s) dream. Offering cupcakes for all occasions including birthdays, weddings, baby showers, work functions and

charity events, Lyndsey prides herself on offering only the best quality homemade products. “You can only buy my cupcakes from my store which means they are always freshly baked that day as we don't sell them past the day they are baked,” she says. In addition to over the counter sales and special orders, Cupcake Creations is becoming increasingly popular for children’s parties. Run over a two-hour period for up to 10 guests, the parties offer a fun, safe environment for budding chefs to learn to bake and decorate. And of course Lyndsey has also added another string to her bow by recently running a week-long decorating course for kids at Cairns Central. “Having been a pre-school teacher this was a real highlight for me” she says. “We were able to get through 720 children in the week we were there!” 45 I CairnsLife

Lyndsey says another highlight for 2012 has been the introduction of a specialised printing machine that enables her to print logos and various images onto an edible icing that can be placed onto the cupcakes. “It's become very popular with corporate clients,” she says. And as far as what the future holds, Lyndsey says she has a number of other ideas in the pipeline. “I don't want to disclose anything yet – but I swear CairnsLife will get the exclusive when they come to fruition!” she laughs. Q: When Did you start singing? A. I started singing when I was 17 years old in musicals around cairns for a hobby, however it was after a break up that I truly began to delve into Music especially the vocal side! I never had lessons I just practiced day after day doing gigs and busking to refine my singing. My passion to perform really pushed me to keep on going. Q: What Kickstarted your career? A. I guess it was my first Solo gig at Havana Music Cafe' a year ago, I am very lucky, I was given a gig when I had barely any experience or songs to play. But after the first one I watched as I improved and my set list grew larger, my "act" became a bit more polished and I began to get more and more gigs. One of the other things was the Audition I had for Australia's Got Talent 2012 which landed me such gigs as the Guest Judge for "Cairns Central's Got Talent" and the support act for "Stan Walker" :) Being involved with both Cairns Has Got Talent and supporting such a great Aussie artist like Stan Walker really helped to me to the next level in my career. Q: What is the best thing you get out of singing? A. I think the greatest reward about singing is you always walk away knowing you are doing exactly what you love and you realise how lucky you are to be able to do this. I have never really done a gig that I haven't seen the audience walk away with an enjoyable experience! You need to take every chance you get to perform or develop as a performer. This is probably a huge reason why I'm so excited about being apart of Cairns Has Got Talent 2013, it really gives the chance for kids young and old to get up and show us what skills they have. Q: Who is your Idol and Why? A. Honestly I have so many Idols! I have spent the last 2 and a half years learning from youtube videos so I have an attachment to all of the musicians that have "Helped or Trained me." However a new one that has been so inspiring to me would have to be Matt Corby, I love his story, his talent and also his creativeness listening to his music always puts me in the "Songwriting mood." Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? A. I really hope to see myself as a more successful version of who I am now! I hope to be touring, playing festivals and be known as a recognised recording artist throughout Australia :) it is a big goal but I figure I might as well aim super high! I plan to really push that forward with the launch of my first EP...stay tuned! Q: What is the best advice you could give to aspiring singers? A. The best advice I can give is to take anything that comes your way! work on yourself and be open to all criticism constructive and detrimental. The feedback I have recieved from my support team and mentors has been so beneficial and that is probably why I'm so pumped to be able to mentor all the fresh talent during Cairns Has Got Talent in January. It all counts and the more you can reflect on your flaws and focus to eliminate them the faster you will see a major improvement in your skills and attitude towards music!

The Gift of Giving

Giving the Gift of More Choice

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” – Mother Teresa.

With so many things to consider and so many people to buy for – finding the right Christmas gift can be tough. Which is why, with such a huge range of products to choose from, a Bunnings gift card is perfect.

We’re in the season for the Gift of Giving – Ho, Ho, Ho! For most, this means spending time with loved ones and exchanging gifts. Celebrating the silly season with the act of gift-giving can offer psychological benefits; Giving a gift is a universal way to show interest, appreciation and gratitude, as well as strengthen bonds with others. When we give without expecting anything in return, we are improving our psychological health. We have made the search for those stocking fillers or ‘wow’ factor items easier for you with our Christmas Gift Guides. There are many products out there that are not only practical, but encourage the use of our beautiful outdoors. It’s also important that we all get a bit of pampering in our lives. However, if you’re thinking of loved ones afar – why not send them a gift card?

And getting one couldn’t be easier. You can pick one up instore in $10, $20, $50 and $100 amounts. Or, if you’d like something a little more personal, you can visit their website and upload a favourite image of your choice to be used on a photo gift card. And if you’re running a little late you can even send an eGift Card to an email on the date of your choice. So don’t stress, give the perfect gift to everyone on your Christmas list this year.

When choosing gifts for family and friends, let your heart be your guide. If you select something that has meaning to the recipient, your gift will make a much greater impact than if you were to be concerned about matching gifts dollar for dollar. “Happiness doesn’t result from what we get, but from what we give.” – Ben Cars. Splash Restaurant

Megan and Malcolm McKay

Local owners, local staff, local seafood make a Splash Splash Seafood Restaurant may be on Cairns’ busiest tourist strip but it is truly a local affair – owned by locals, staffed by locals and supporting local fishermen by using only wild caught Queensland seafood. Since the doors opened 10 years ago, owners Megan and Malcolm McKay have focused on creating a warm, welcoming environment, providing the highest quality seafood in a relaxed setting. Whether it’s freshly shucked oysters, the deep sea laksa packed with gulf prawns, reef fish and east coast scallops or a more traditional fish and chips featuring your choice of the fish of the day, barramundi or mahi mahi, you can be sure the star of the dish has not long been out of the ocean. Perhaps the biggest achievement at Splash is bringing such top quality to the table at such a reasonable price, and catering to people of all walks of life - a couple on a romantic night out, work group celebrating the end of the week or a family looking for some tantalising tastes without the washing up. “I’m a mum myself with two kids and a busy business,” Megan says. “It’s really important to us that our customers get the experience they are looking for.” Splash therefore includes a kids menu accompanied by paper and crayons along with vegetarian, meat, chicken and gluten-free options.

Libby Cooper (Restaurant Supervisor), Megan McKay (Proprietor), Crystal McCoist (Head Chef)

“We are a local restaurant and really want local people to visit us. And we believe in supporting them as well. I’m passionate about locals supporting locals,” Megan says. It’s a mantra that the McKay’s live up to, employing a great Cairns chef and local restaurant staff, sourcing ingredients and services from city suppliers and sticking stringently to their belief in using only wild caught Queensland seafood.

CHEF OF THE MONTH

Crystal McCoist

How long have you been a chef for? 3.5 years Where do you currently work? Splash Seafood Restaurant What made you want to become a chef ? Most of my family are chefs or work in hospitality - it was a natural progression... What is the best thing about your job? At Splash we are able to handle the seafood straight from the ocean, our catch comes in fresh for us to prepare & we even shuck our own oysters. To be able to train my apprentices' from the onset & see them learn & grow is truly inspiring & very rewarding. What ingredient can you not live without? No - don't make me choose! I cant live without Fresh herbs & my spice rack is always well stocked. What do you like to cook at home at the moment? Actually vice versa, I take a lot of ideas & techniques from my home cooking & apply them at my work. What do you like to do when your not cooking? Enjoying the beautiful weather & lifestyle of Tropical North Queensland. What is your favorite food? Fresh Fish & Oysters of course! I also love Japanese food & I'm a sucker for crumbed & oven baked camembert cheese with red current jam - delish! What do you love most about cooking in Tropical North Queensland? I love the opportunity to create & invent dishes that incorporate produce thats indigenous to our local region. The view of the Cairns Esplanade & Coral Sea from my kitchen at Splash in a bonus.....

Wine Review F O O D

&

W I N E

By Krista Hall ISG Cert Wine Expert www.eatyourcakeandhaveittoo.wordpress.com

Another year has gone by, the dry season has come and gone, the showers have yes unfortunately come again, and the holiday season is upon us once more. Time for celebration, time for cheer, time for friends and family to be near. What better way to celebrate and show your love then to crack open a few bottles of wine? There are a lot of gatherings over the holidays so basically anything goes. Try and change it up this year with a few wine cocktails to enjoy the hot summer day. Why not a mimosa for breakfast? Add a splash of orange juice to a sparkling wine, and a few fresh raspberries for a garnish. It’s always a party favourite. In the afternoon, try mixing up a sangria for the beach and seafood feast. Take a bottle of white or red wine, mix it with ice, fresh oranges, lemons and limes, a few splashes of Triple Sec, and maybe a few strawberries and grapes tossed in. Serve it like you would a punch. It’s a nice refreshing way to enjoy a nice bottle of wine with the salty breeze.

If you’re a plain and simple kind of a person a nice sparkling wine will do the trick throughout the day as well as for that midnight “cheers” to celebrate the New Year. One of my favourites is the Sieur d’Arques Aimery Grand Cuvee 1531. I did a blind tasting a few months back and this sparkling was paired to a bottle of expensive Champagne and most people thought this bottle was the expensive one. For $14.90 a bottle it is a bargain you will love. It is a creamy, and toasty, traditional French sparkling wine sourced from the oldest sparkling wine region in the world. How could you go wrong? If none of these ideas sound good to you, then when in doubt, crack those bottles you’ve been saving for a special occasion! Have a safe and happy holiday and a wonderful New Year! Happy swirling, glass filling, legs sticking, vino drinking!

A story of fanciful delight last bite. Breakfast – Lunch Coffee – Juice Mon-Fri: 7am-3pm Sat: 8am-3pm Sun: 8am-12pm Dine in wonderland with Alice or take away with Peter Pan.

SPECIAL DAILY $15 LUNCHTIME licensed cafe/restaurant

Making its home in Cairns just over two years ago, Mecca Bah on the Harbour Lights’ Waterfront is fast becoming a local favourite.

The Pier at the Marina | 40315496

Offering a tantalising selection of modern Moroccan and Middle Eastern cuisine, it is the perfect way to spice up your lunch or dinner. Featuring stunning water views, a relaxed atmosphere and inviting décor, they cater to everything from intimate meals in their circular seating booths complete with privacy curtain, right through to a set dinner banquet for larger groups. With the recommendation of our charming restaurant manager Sergej Janez and attentive waiter Jarrod, we began our meal with the traditional Mecca Bah dips consisting of hummus, labna and baba gannouj – the perfect party starter! Next we were served a selection of flavour-infused entrees including sweet potato felafels served with a tahini sauce, the kataifi pastry – a clever selection of cheese and spices wrapped in a crunchy baked shredded wheat pastry shell, and my personal favourite, the spicy lamb and pinenut boureks .

Just as we thought we couldn’t fit another thing in, the mains arrived. While the Moroccan spiced calamari with Turkish bean salad was tender and delicious, my companion and I both agreed that the chargrilled chicken shish with vegetable cous cous and tabouleh was the standout dish both in presentation and taste. Our mains were also complimented by a range of side salads including the refreshing beetroot, rocket and yogurt salad, the spiced roasted pumpkin and carrot salad, and the traditional Fattoush – a tasty Lebanese bread salad. Overall Mecca Bah caters to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Their Progressive Banquet Menu is an excellent option for groups while those watching their pennies can enjoy a $15 lunch menu from Monday to Friday and even treat the kids with an affordable children’s menu. With beer on tap, an extensive wine list and delicious desert menu it would be easy to settle in for the afternoon or evening. My advice is to not rush the experience – order a large selection to share and enjoy the many exotic flavours on offer. Mecca Bar 1 Marlin Parade Cairns 4870 Tel: (07)4051 3737

Smithfield High School The Stars of 2012 at Smithfield High are, without doubt, its graduating year 12 students. A very close runner up must be the education philosophy that has prepared them for the next stage of their lives. “This year’s grade 12s are a very capable group,” Principal Barry Courtney says. “The vast majority have a good idea of what they are going to do. 40 to 45 per cent are pursuing university careers, while others are going into the (armed) services. We have students who plan to travel, go to TAFE or enter working apprenticeships or traineeships.” This range of futures is indicative of the Smithfield High School approach, which starts by helping students identify where their futures lie and then develops the learning pathway to get there. This wasn’t always the case. Just three years ago the school was suffering an image problem with families choosing to bypass the northern beaches facility for other options.

“We had very capable students, they just weren’t achieving the outcomes they should have been. We had too many students capable of tertiary aspirations who weren’t progressing to university. They were getting an ‘ok’ education but weren’t pushed to extend themselves. We said ‘The school is better than that, we can serve these students and this community better, and set about doing so,’ Barry explains. Ensuring students got the marks needed to get into university was not sufficient. The school set the bar at making sure they had the skills to be successful and established a partnership with James Cook University (JCU) to make this happen. The Senior Learning Academy was born. Initially for years 11 and 12 students, the academy brings top achievers together to provide an improved focus on academic excellence. Participants receive special support from teachers and a mentor from JCU. They also attend events and learning activities at JCU to “demystify the tertiary process”. Another key step was setting up an

entirely new subject, Philosophy and Reason, which teaches reasoning and analytical thinking to prepare students for the lecture hall and the cornerstone of tertiary assessment – academic writing. At the end of 2010, the first year of the program, the number of Smithfield High students accepted into university jumped from 16 to 29 per cent, with a further 11 per cent accepting a deferment. Next year, academies will be set up in all year levels of the school, as well as partner school Trinity Beach Primary. Philosophy in Action will be offered as a subject in grades 8 to 10 to support the Senior Academy subject.

Year 11 Dux

“I have gained a support network of teachers, staff and James Cook University student mentors that have sacrificed their own time to ensure that I understand the attitudes and skills needed to orientate to the university environment.” – Nathan Norris,

“Right down to the primary school level we talk about aspirations to foster a culture of belief which, in turn, provides the motivation to succeed,” Barry explains. “Our success in 2012 has really been wrapped around aspirational learning.” Of course, university isn’t for everyone, and Barry is rightly proud that Smithfield works with all students so they “can transition successfully to the next phase of their life”. For students with special needs this may be living independently as an adult, for those with emotional or behavioural issues learning how to juggle the pressures of life. For others it’s about entering the workforce or a vocational program. “We don’t just look at academia. It’s about the right outcome for each individual.”

“Today, our year 12 outcomes can stack up against any school in Cairns. I’m confident people believe that what we are doing is making a difference.”

2 0 1 2

“Studying philosophy and reason has helped me become a more critical and open thinker, while also exposing me to the many different beliefs and thoughts that people hold about life and how we should live it.” – Emma Vestergaard,

All the academic support in the world, however, will be wasted if students don’t believe in themselves. Barry has, therefore, been driving a cultural revolution hand-in-hand with the classroom shakeup. The cornerstones of aspiration, belief, motivation and success now support all learning at the school.

Has the approach worked? Recognition from the State Government would suggest yes. Smithfield has been named as one of only 26 independent public schools in Queensland for 2013 - a stamp of approval that the success-driven improvement agenda is working – and this year received a Showcase Award from Education Queensland for innovative and successful teaching programs.

Permanent Visa Options for Employing Overseas Skilled Workers The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) allows employers in regional or low population growth areas of Australia, including Cairns and surrounding areas, to sponsor employees who are foreign nationals for a permanent visa to work in Australia.

Australia has a range of visa options available for lawfully operating Australian and overseas employers to sponsor and employ skilled workers who have recognised qualifications and working experience in particular occupations required in Australia. One very popular program is the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa.

The requirements of the employer include offering an eligible skilled position to the visa applicant for a minimum of two years. The employer must be active and lawfully operating in regional Australia, show that the position cannot be filled by an Australian employee and pay a market salary rate. Upon the RSMS approval the visa applicant and any accompanying family members are granted permanent residency on the condition that they remain working for the sponsoring employer for two years. To be eligible for permanent residency under the RSMS visa, the visa applicant must have

the relevant qualifications or working experience for the nominated position and meet any mandatory licensing, registration or professional membership requirements. The visa applicant will also need to be under 50 years of age and meet English language requirements. There are exemptions relating to age, skills and English language ability and these depend on your occupation, salary and past working experience. The visa applicant and any accompanying family members must also meet health and character requirements. There are three streams in the RSMS visa program and the skills, qualifications and language requirements depend on whether you apply for the Temporary Residence Transition stream, the Direct Entry stream or the Agreement stream. For advice and guidance on your eligibility to sponsor overseas workers to Australia or your eligibility as a visa applicant you should seek the advice of a Registered Migration Agent.

Market Volatility Continues! Investments and Super Suffering? What can you do? Are you worried about your super balance - your investments and nest egg? Do the headlines of US Fiscal Cliff and the like, keep you awake at night? The GFC, one day it will be history and we will be past it. My crystal ball tells me it will be….. I will leave that for another article. In the meantime what can you do to give your superannuation and your investments certainty and stop those sleepless nights? First suggestion is to see a Financial Planner. Financial Planners can improve your financial health and peace of mind. Find one that you are comfortable with and that can advise on various products and platforms (e.g. not locked into to a major Bank or super fund etc). STRATEGIES TO CONSIDER: Time in the market not timing - you need patience, 5 years to 10 years for some and must be quality assets. Time won’t matter if asset is poor (e.g. some property structures or forestry investments are a good example of poor quality). Dollar cost averaging – buying gradually into an investment consistently over a term. More shares are purchased when prices are low, and fewer shares are bought when prices are high. You still need time and patience but returns are far smoother.

INVESTMENTS TO CONSIDER: Cash - term deposits give you certainty of capital but not income. TD rates today for 12 mths are 4.5% and shrinking, yet four years ago they were 7% pa. You are also guaranteed to lose capital against inflation (if drawing income). Selling from growth to cash can be detrimental at the wrong time. Conservative investment mix - aim to achieve slightly better than cash rates – still has volatility. Capital Protected products - There are a range of new capital protected products entering the market which can provide you with some access to growth but also a future minimum outcome. They have flexibility – to choose your investment, to choose your term and to make decisions within the product without extra costs. These products do not guarantee growth, but they allow you the flexibility to access growth at your choosing. What to do next? Do something is my advice. Review - get a second opinion. Remove stress and uncertainty out of your investments and super. Happy investing!

Age no barrier to

success

Melissa Sinopoli is proof that age is no barrier to success. Just four years into her legal career the Cairns born-and-bred lawyer has received one of the state’s most prestigious awards for women practitioners. For this Star of 2012 the honour is not a stepping stone to a faceless firm in the country’s capital cities but confirmation that the Far North offers a rewarding and challenging career. Early last month Melissa was named the Regional Woman Lawyer of the Year by the Women Lawyers Association of Queensland, recognising professional excellence. She is the youngest ever recipient of the award which has Magistrates and senior Barristers on its honour role. Partner and Commercial Group Head at MacDonnell Law Luckbir Singh says: "Melissa is a great example of local talent changing the face of law in North Queensland, with the highest possible level of skill in delivering legal advice. This award shows that it’s not just about how long you

Melissa Sinopoli MacDonnells Law

have been in practice, but what you achieve whilst in practice, that matters most.” Melissa on the other hand thanks her colleagues. “It was a surprise, especially as I know how many talented female regional lawyers there are in the profession today! I’ve been fortunate to work in a law firm that’s given me a lot of opportunities and also to work with some talented lawyers who have been very generous with their time in training me.” For Melissa, joining and staying at MacDonnells is just common sense. “Although I studied in Townsville I was born and grew up in Cairns and my family is here.

Given the reputation MacDonnells Law has in the region it was an easy decision to make to start my career here. It’s been a great mix: I’ve had the chance to run my own cases, have direct contact with clients, do varied and challenging work and still build expertise in areas I’m interested in. You don’t often get to do that at a national firm at an early stage in your career.” The combination seems to suit Melissa who was promoted to Associate in 2012 – the youngest woman to achieve the status in the firm’s 128 year history – and named a finalist in the “Future Star” category of the Lawyer’s Weekly National Women in

89 I CairnsLife

Law Awards. Yet she still finds time to work with Worklink and the Cairns Safety Summit and Liquor Accord, as well as mentoring James Cook University students. Asked what advice she gives these students, she responds: “It’s about making the most of the opportunities that come your way and learning as much as you can from the people around you. Drive, commitment and the right attitude will take you a long way.” Based on Melissa’s success, it’s clearly advice that works. MacDonnelles Law Grafton Street Cairns 4870 Tel: (07) 4030 0600

Cruise Triumph Daytona 675 After a long string of lackluster middleweight sportbikes from Triumph, the British crew went back to the drawing board for 2006 and came out with the all-new Daytona 675. Radical styling and an Inline-Triple engine highlight the Daytona 675, which looked set to either be their savior or the last nail in the coffin, so to speak. Luckily, the boy from the UK got it right. In replacing the Inline-Four Daytona 650, which was a complete flop in terms of both performance and sales numbers, engineers had a big task re-vamping the Triumph name in the sporting world. But radical new styling and a torque-laden triple engine which sat in a well-tuned steel trellis frame quickly erased the old 650 from riders’

minds. The Triumph Daytona 675 was a hit from the start, as it gave the character of a V-Twin and the performance on an Inline-Four in a slim and attractive package. Still one of their best-selling Triumph motorcycles to date, for 2009 the Daytona 675

received a host of minor updates. These include new suspension, as well as lightly restyled bodywork and new monobloc brakes for improved stopping power. As for the engine, roughly three more horsepower and equally more torque are a result of some

slight internal tweaking, while a new ECU allows the addition of a plug-in Triumph accessory quick-shifter for full-throttle up-shifts. All this adds up to make what was already a very competitive middleweight sportbike now a contender for class leader.

A Fitting Home For Lux ury

When you think of luxurious motor vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is on the short list of most astute enthusiasts. So it’s only fitting that this opulent brand is accommodated in a building of appropriate sophistication. After adding Mercedes-Benz to its portfolio in 2011, Trinity Auto Group has been on a single-minded mission to construct that building, and their efforts have now resulted in a showroom located at 37 McLeod Street, that exceeds international dealer standards. “Because it’s built to international dealer standards you’ll feel right at home in our new showroom. In fact, any current Mercedes-Benz owner who visits our showroom will instantly feel familiar with it,” says Trinity Mercedes-Benz Manager, Owen Petersen. “The openness of the new space is very inviting. There are no barriers visually from the street to inside the showroom, so people will hopefully be drawn in for a little window shopping.” A stunning visual display from both inside and out, the Trinity Mercedes-Benz showroom provides the type of buying experience you’d expect from this iconic company. With the main showroom featuring six models, the dealership is a new stand-alone facility with its own amenities and customer lounge. It’s clear that everything from the quality of the door handles to the fresh

C R U I S E

vase of flowers behind the front desk, that this place is tailored to excite the senses of anyone that walks through the doors. Built by Keir Constructions work commenced on June 25 and work was completed October 20. The materials used in the build evoke both a sense of high-end style as well and an earthiness that breaks any notions that this is a sterile dealership without any soul. “When people walk into the showroom, we want them to get that feeling of class, but I think there’s also a warmth to the place. We want everyone to feel welcome here,” says Mr Petersen. Whichever angle you look at it, this substantial investment is a sign of Trinity Motors confidence in the Cairns marketplace. And that can only be a good thing for the community as a whole. “I feel privileged to be able to work in such a stunning new facility. It shows the commitment that Trinity Auto Group has to building this brand and investing in the community,” says Mr Petersen. “I hope anyone that likes incredible cars and flawless architecture finds the time to come in to see us.” The Trinity Mercedes-Benz showroom is now open for viewing and is located 37 McLeod Street, Cairns.

After an extensive hospitality career in New Zealand, Steven moved to Australia in 2008 to take up a position with Rydges whom he considers the industry leader. “Parent company AHL is well known for looking after its people which has certainly been the case for me,” he says. So when the opportunity arose to join the unique QT brand (also part of the AHL stable) Steven didn’t hesitate. “Having watched the transformation of the product to what it is now, I felt honoured to be considered,” he says. “Working with a new funky brand was always going to be fun!” Launched in May this year QT Resort Port Douglas is part of a nationwide series of hotels set to revolutionise the industry. Positioned close to the Port Douglas township and Four Mile Beach, the resort combines a hip, designer fitout with a relaxed tropical atmosphere. With a choice of 170 guest rooms and deluxe one and two bedroom villas, the property offers guests the very highest standard in service and facilities, “The people here are what make the business hum,” Steven says. “We provide a great environment and our crew embrace the concept and really get involved in making our guests have a true QT experience.”

Career-wise, 2012 has been a significant year for Steven Oakley. After being named AHL’s (Amalgamated Holdings Limited’s) Rookie GM of the Year for his work at Rydges Esplanade Resort, he’s now taken on an exciting new role in the organization. As General Manager of the innovative QT Resort Port Douglas, Steven and his team look forward to reinventing the five star resort experience.

Complete with everything you’d expect from a five star property including resort pool, gymnasium and tennis courts, QT also boasts it’s own outdoor Moonlight Cinema and an exciting new dining experience. “We’re proud to be in Tropical North Queensland and to bring a new taste to the tropics,” Steven says. “The bazaar marketplace dining concept provides a dining experience that is second to none.” And with the festive season approaching, the resort is now offering a well-priced Christmas Day lunch along with a New Year’s Day Party, providing an excellent opportunity for locals to experience QT for themselves. Overall the property is certainly in safe hands with Steven’s recent award cementing his place in the organisation “I was so taken by surprise it wasn’t until I left the stage and began talking with colleagues that the realisation of the award hit home,” he says. And in addition to his recent career highlights, 2012 has also been an important year on a personal level with he and his wife celebrating their first wedding anniversary. “Another great personal achievement was completing in the Tough Mudder event (20km with 25 military style obstacles) in Sydney which was extremely satisfying,” Steven says. “That and taking out the best-dressed award at the recent Douglas Awards,” he laughs. Surprise win for surprising business No two Lady Douglas river cruises are the same – that’s the nature of nature. Perhaps that’s why owners John and Jenny Edmondson didn’t rate their chances of winning a second title as best tourist attraction in the area. On the other hand, they should be used to the unexpected.

Lady Douglas Jenny & John Edmondson

“There are so many great tourist destinations up here,” Jenny says. “We won the award two years ago and really didn’t expect to win again. We didn’t even ask anyone to vote for us!”

“From what people have told us, they hear that the Lady Douglas is good value for money,” Jenny says. “And people in the industry call us Port Douglas’s best kept secret. It’s nice to hear.”

While the Edmondsons might have been surprised at the outcome of the Douglas Business Awards – they also took out the most Eco-Friendly Tourist Operator title – their 20,000 visitors probably weren’t.

While the Lady Douglas crew does its best to make their guests comfortable, it’s Dickson’s Inlet and its wildlife that makes the experience.

Since they bought the river cruise operation in 2003 the duo has relied on word of mouth to build the business, and have more than trebled the number of guests over that time.

“It’s such a beautiful area behind Port Douglas and you really do see something different on every trip. Yesterday morning, for example, we saw four crocs, a couple of small ones and bigger one, and there was a beautiful sea eagle. We had one lady who had come up before

and unfortunately didn’t see anything, but this time she got it all.” That’s not to say a trip on the river without a croc is a waste of time. The cruise takes in the Port Douglas water front and harbour with stunning coastal views of the rainforest and mountains before heading into unspoilt mangroves where the birdlife is spectacular. “People tell me I have the best job in the world,” Jenny says. “And I really can’t argue.” It’s a job that the Edmondsons, marine biologists from the UK, literally stumbled upon. The couple was holidaying in Australia during a uni

break when they decided, on a whim, to head north after finishing a dive course. Like so many others they fell in love with Port Douglas and spent the following decade earning their qualifications, visas and finally Australian citizenship. Oh, and bought a house and business along the way. Was worth it? “This past year has just been awesome,” Jenny says. “There is just such a positive atmosphere in the town and such a great attitude towards tourism.”

Awards Showcase

Best in the Industry Quality and innovation are the keys to success and both were apparent at the HIA/Pioneer North Queensland Housing, Kitchen and Bathroom Awards. The awards were held at the Pullman International Hotel on Friday 2nd November where over 200 local Building industry professionals celebrated. HIA Awards showcase the best our builders and cabinetmaker members have created. HIA Area Manager Russell Parnicott says “With design and décor changing all the time, these awards help to keep the industry up to date with new trends as well as set a standard of quality for which HIA members are renowned.” Winning an industry award is a great way to gain public and industry recognition for quality execution and outstanding workmanship, particularly in these strained economic times, where it is impor tant to set yourself apart from your competitors. We are very proud of the only National Awards Industry program and where a winner of major category’s here in Cairns progress to North Queensland Awards and if successful there then go on to Australia wide HIA awards. The National Awards were hosted in Cairns in May this year where over 700 guests attended the prestigious evening at the Cairns Entertainment Centre. Judges Richard Schepen, Richard Frank and Sophie Barrett were impressed with the high level of entries in this year’s HIA awards. This year has seen several new building businesses entering the awards program for the first time with also a long list of veteran Builders and Cabinet making firms entering. For long days of judging as HIA entries were received as far south as Port Hinchinbrook andnorth to Port Douglas and many quality entries also received from the tablelands.

It’s the little things that make Therese elite... Plucking frangipanis from the garden to freshen an empty house may seem relatively insignificant in the scheme of a half-million dollar sale but it’s these little touches that separate the elite from the every day agent. Therese Plath has been in the first category for a decade. A principal at Ray White Cairns Central for 19 years Therese earned the status of an Elite Member in 2002 and has consistently been in the top five per cent of the company’s sales team throughout Australia and Asia ever since. It’s a concrete sign of the Cairns realtor’s continued success, but speaking to Therese you get the impression it’s the opinion of her clients rather than the executives at Ray White that really matter. Therese works across all price ranges, mainly in central and southern Cairns, with an interest in acreages. “I really do enjoy what I do,” she says. “I’m dedicated to the people I’m working for, my sellers. And my buyers become sellers in years to come. Getting this kind of repeat business shows I must be doing something right!” She gives the example of a client that purchased a property through her 15 years ago and has recently asked her to sell. Then there is the Western Australian man who she has never met entrusting a property to her over the phone based on his mother’s

Therese Plath Ray White Cairns Central

recommendation. And the children of former clients who turn to Therese when it’s their turn. “It’s just so important to me that these people do remember that I did everything I could for them.” The frangipani story is one example of making that little extra effort. The property had been on the market for quite some time with another agent. It was vacant and stripped of any feeling of home. Who knows if taking the time to sweep away the dust and set a vase of fragrant flowers in the kitchen was the deciding factor, but Therese was able to sell the house where others had failed. Based on the large number of testimonials on the Ray White Cairns Central website, it’s not an isolated incident. Gem, 117 I CairnsLife

passionate, brilliant service, exceptional professionalism – are reoccurring themes. This last accolade is particularly important to Therese. “When I first came into the industry real estate agents were certainly not held in high regard,” she says recounting the public polls that grouped journalists, realtors and used car salesmen at the bottom of credible professions. “All I wanted to do was lift the bar of what people thought of real estate agents. To be regarded as a professional in what I do.” With top marks from both the industry and clients it would appear she has succeeded.

HomeLife Building, buying or renovating your property

The best aspect of your land: So you’ve been looking around at some of the available land in Cairns and think you’ve found the perfect block to build your new home. What next?? Let’s look at what adds to the cost other than the build price, that is most important to your quality of life. We need to think about all the other things that go into the overall building process like site works, pool, landscaping, fencing and any specific design requirements. Sloping sites need to have adequate drainage and retaining walls. These can be designed to accentuate stunning architectural details and tie all those elements together. Can we capture that magnificent view that first struck you when looking at the block? Does the site have good access for construction and then later for your daily needs. We also need to be have natural ventilation and cooling breezes that work for you. Passively embedded in the design should be the latest environmentally friendly materials and building practices for the sustainability of your new home.

It’s more than a Vie w

These elements are only a few that will affect the final budget of your new home, so its worth spending some time to get these in proportion to your project. Whether you are building an individually designed home or an ‘off the plan’ project home it doesn’t take much to get it right! Project home plans can always be adjusted to suit your land’s best aspects and if the builder you’re talking to can’t do that, then maybe you should be looking for a builder or designer who can. Unfortunately, only too often, many people complete the building of their beautiful new home only to find that it didn’t quite get the best of that great view or those wonderful cooling breezes and then they have to turn on the air conditioning. There are experienced builders and designers who can easily inspect your land and determine those aspects that will make the most of your new home.

122 I CairnsLife

Before you put pen to paper on that land contract go to the block of land at different times of the day, feel the breezes, look where the sun is for both summer and winter, get a feel for the neighbours’ homes and how they will impact on your privacy and feel for yourself what the block has to offer you and your family. Sometimes it’s better to make a small compromise on your wish list of inclusions to ensure that the final layout of your new home is suited to the easy living and outdoor lifestyle we all enjoy in North Queensland. Building a new home is one of the largest investments we make in our lives so its worth doing a little research and getting the right advise from experienced people. Handy Hints on Cleaning Things Here’s a few simple and natural solutions that will assist you to keep your home clean and free of creepy crawlies this Summer. • To deter silverfish, place whole cloves in wardrobes & drawers. • Clove oil (sold in chemists for toothaches) kills mould spores. Mix 3 drops in 1 ltr of water & then use to wipe down areas susceptible to mould.

• To clean your shower curtain, wash it in the washing machine with 1 cup of both vinegar and bleach, some white towels & washing powder. Adding fabric softener will help keep the curtain clean. When the load is done, return the curtains to their place in the bathroom to drip dry. (Check your washing machine manual to ensure it’s okay to use bleach). • To clean a microwave oven, add four tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the oven. Then wipe them with a soft cloth. • To stop bathroom mirrors steaming up, regularly rub a dry bar of soap over the surface and rub in with a clean cloth.

• To keep spiders or any other nasty surprises out of shoes you keep outside, place old stockings over the top of them. Make sure the stockings don’t have holes in them, and if they don’t fit snugly over the top, use an elastic band to secure them. • To stop ants entering your house, draw a chalk line on the ground where you want them to stop. You must re-draw the chalk lines each time it rains. • Vacuuming a mattress, particularly along piping and crevices, removes dead skin cells that attract dust mites.

“The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses!” – Hanna Rion vegetables, fruit and herbs which feed the mind, body and soul. Gardening can be shared by all ages creating fond memories from one generation to another.

Creating a beautiful garden to enjoy with friends and family is inspiring, stimulating and increases your sense of well-being. Gardeners derive health benefits through relaxation and exercise as well as the mental satisfaction of creating a beautiful and abundant environment in which to live. Also the creation of edible gardens can produce delicious, nutritious home-grown

Designed landscapes can emphasise architectural elements and features or in some cases hide or disguise eyesores. As well, micro- climates can be established around your home to create cooling shade from tropical heat, conditions suitable for shade loving plants and creating habitat attractive for local fauna. Certain plants such as Syzygiums and Murraya can be utilised to grow a “green” fence for privacy. Enthusiasts are often avid collectors of plants such as certain species of Orchids, Anthuriums, Gingers, Cacti,

Heliconias, Calatheas, Bromeliads and even the rare variegated Rhapis Palm. Many of these are often available at Limberlost Nursery. Some of us prefer to grow themed gardens such as Perfumed Gardens, White Gardens, Japanese Gardens, Cottage Gardens, Rainforest and Tropical Gardens, Secret Gardens, Garden Rooms, Rockeries, Desert Gardens, Native Gardens, Fairy Gardens, Memorial Gardens, Display Gardens, Ponds and Water Features also gardens for birds or butterflies or Adventure Gardens for children and pets. Most styles can be created with help and professional advice from horticulturists who select from suitable plants which are adapted to our

lush tropical Cairns climate. They can advise you on conditions which suit the plants you love or assist in choosing tropical plants that create the look you want. Many and various are the reasons we garden, as many reasons as there are people who love to garden and as varied as their personalities.
