Antioch & The Silk Road

There are perhaps few cities with as long a history and historical significance as the former city of Antioch (Today Antakya). Acting as a capital city to the middle east for Greko Macedonian empire, the Roman empire, and the Byzantium empire throughout its history, the city has been subject to numerous sieges, battles and historical events. As a primary point on the Silk road the former city essentially acted as a hub to the Middle east and far east for the Europeans and vice versa. The fertile lands allowed for a population and its 20km proximity to the Mediterranean essentially allowed it to function as a trade city with a population at 100ad rivaling cities such as Alexandria and Rome. The city acted as an important trade hub all the way up to the 20th century where Silk merchants and Silk balls can be seen to be bought and sold in photographs dating back to the 1890s. The Hatay region and Antakya in particular have been subject to the discovery of some of the largest archaeological mosaic and coin findings from the roman eras and barely visible remnants of the cities grid layout further shows its Greko Macedonian past as-well. Antioch further functions as an interesting intersection of various belief systems and religions with Sunnis, Alawis, Christians and Jewish populations all having a presence in the city throughout history. Perhaps most notably the city served as the alleged birth place of ‘Christianity’ with the Church of St Peter supposedly dug by St Peter himself. Because of this the city was also subject to occupation during the first crusades in the search of Artefact’s where the mythical Lance of Longinus was found in the Church

Perhaps in the cities history one of the most notable parts depicted in numerous etchings drawings and sketches are the citys former walls and gates. Which surrounded the city and climbed the mountains. The walls although no longer existent where developed by each successive occupier of the city.

Antakya Today

Today as a city Antioch, now known as Antakya has lost much of its classical beauty and a great deal of its historical artefact’s and heritage due to a number of natural disasters, fires and earthquakes. The ancient city walls were torn day decades ago and a small remaining chunk of the cities historical typology remains within the former boundaries of the cities walls. Within the streets winding tight passageways and paths exist and numerous century old buildings remain, with most being constructed from classical wood and plaster construction. Layers and layers of the city’s history is still visible in this part with parts of the roman street layout still prominent in the major axis roads running through the old city. Antakya as a modern city however expanded rapidly during the late 20th century with almost all buildings over the river being constructed post 1900 with the idea of speed and cost effectiveness being paramount in the designs. The city remains reasonably poor economically being part of a country currently facing numerous troubles from neighboring areas. Surprisingly the Hatay region has remained very stable despite its extreme proximity to war-torn areas of Syria which many are seeing as a reflection of its truly multicultural, multi-ethnic background.

Today when viewing Hatay news it becomes obvious the City of Antakya once again has a problem with fire. Numerous large infernos and building destruction have occurred within the past year and bearing in mind the historical cities construction of wood, this becomes an issue of a preservation and life saving. When investigated it was found there are only two small fire stations within Antakya both of which operate on the outskirts of the city for this reason the proposed project is a new rapid response Fire-station for the city of Antakya situated right at the heart of the city where the historical areas and new areas can be reached within minutes.

The inner city of Antakya is split in two by the river orntes, providing a logistical challenge for a fire station and fire response. The round about high lighted on the map marks the relative center of the city and the primary bridge from the new areas to the old areas.

When observing the map the clear lack of venation throughout the city is apparent and the primary park bordering the river has further been divided from its original plan and a government building has been places in the original park foot print (highlighted red) From a pragmatic approach this area provides the perfect location for a central fire-station as it has strong access to the old city as-well as direct access to the main roads and a water supply.

The site further provides additional opportunities in creating an interaction with the park, reconnecting the park to the archaeological museum and further restoring it to its original planned design. As-well as giving the potential for the public to have an interaction with the fire station and fire fighters. The two buildings highlighted in direct proximity to the site are also apart of the cities heritage pre dating 1900 and being the first two buildings built on the other side of orntes.

Program Equipment

Facilities

In designing the fire station it is critical that the building be designed around the requirements specific for that station. For the Antakya central station it is expected that the station will need to deal with all manners of emergency therefore a range of Vehicles used for rapid response have been specified. Ultimately the vehicles specify the crew size and thus the whole program requirements. All fire stations are unique to there requirements

Call-out Receiving area

Given the 24hr Nature of the Station and the long night shifts as-well as allowances for down time the following residential facilities are needed. Kitchen With 2x All equipment as per Day/Night Shift Equipment: Combi Ovens, Stoves, Fridges, Prep counters, Microwaves, Dishwasher, Pantry

Upon the return of the crew the main priority is to get the crew immediately ready to go back out again, this means having them cleaned changed and with there overalls at the doors of the trucks ready for the next call-out. This should be done as quickly and efficiently as possible

Given this arrangement of Shifts the average team will work shifts and 2 night shifts per week with Each team receiving day off every 3 weeks on rotation. To allow for night shift statistical lower incidence rate due to low traffic a night will consist of 12 people with the remaining 6 on Call. Note all Teams have there own 2 officers which are rostered shift as-well.

A bay per specified appliance (2x Land cruisers count for 1 bay) each must be capable of housing the largest vehicle with doors fully open (1m each side) and an additional meter on each side to allow for circulation and placement of overalls in order for fire fighters to jump into as they are called out. Helmets are stored in trucks per fire fighter. Total bay width therefore 6500 x 11000(min)

General

Apparatus bay should be open on both sides allowing for appliances to drive through. Ground leading to street must be marked warning to keep clear.

All staff need to be constantly kept up to date and remain alert both theoretically and physically, this training time would be managed by officers and station managers there fore room is needed Class Room

High school style class room/lecture room with presentation area and enough desks for multiple crews and potentially public users.

Physical Fitness

Fully equipped strength training gym with bench press, squat racks, dumbbell racks as-well as cardio cycling machines. Outdoor fitness area for group training. Stair tower to practice running up and down as well as suitable circuit room

Room for outdoor training such as car cutting equipment setup etc. Large scale drills are taken care of in training camps however some on site is required

Teams Given it is unlikely that both a Ladder Truck and Heavy Vehicle rescue Truck will be needed during the same indecent a Crew size of 18 +2 Officers (Chief & Assistant Chief) at any given moment will ensure that the Fire station is able to deploy to any Emergency at any time. Given the 24 Hour Nature of the profession multiple shifts will further be needed.

The former walled city of antioch is once again subject to destruction and damages from fire which is slowly sacking the former great city of the world. Combining the Garden based site and its operation on the threshold of the old and New Citys of Antioch The New Fire station for Central Antakya will promote the ascension of the fire Fighter into a guardian of the city aiming to save the lives of the people of the city when they’re in danger and preserve and protect the rich historical fabric of the City. Furthermore the station and the Gardens shall provide a place of tranquility and peace for the fire fighters to quietly operate, work and relax when not deployed just as has been done by the guards of the city for centuarys before hand.

Spatial Arrangement During the Spatial Mapping of this building Careful Consideration had been made to the fundamental pragmatic requirements of the building. Ultimatum after several design tests the apparatus bay was located centrally in the building in an effort to minimize all distances to the apparatus and Vehicles during a call-out. All stair orientations which provide direct passage are aimed towards the Apparatus for example From the Terrace to the apparatus. In the few cases where a direct path is not provided alternatives are given such as that in the residence area. Terrace

Imagining that the Fire fighters are soundly asleep at 3am and the alarm goes off they are immediately able to leap out of bed jump on the fire pole and be delivered straight to the appliance. Making it the quickest method of access to the appliances despite being the furthest from the appliance as per conventional travel.

Recreation & TV Room

Furthermore the Design has been arranged in order of use meaning that in any typical set of uses the fire fighters are never double back on the them self. Fore example in the arrival from a call out.

Training Tower and Drying Tower

In this case the truck pulls into the bay from the rear entrance, the fire fighters exits 1/2 go straight to the cleanup rooms and half check the truck, the Fire fighter cleanup, shower change grab there new overalls from the assigned locker bay walk down the primary corridor deposit the new overall next to the truck and the there seat and then go upstairs to either the rec room or dining room. All functional area are located immediately where they are required and all ancillary services are located on the next floor up and so on.

Given the program the offices are not designed to have speed access to the apparatus as it assumed that the majority of the office works will not be active fire fighters apart from the officers who are located withing immediate reach of the apparatus.

Given the desire to bed the building into the park open rooftop space where made use of where possible such as the open air outdoor training area above the offices which them selves are sunk 1/2 a meter into the ground.

Softening

Given the Natural landscape surrounding the building with the organic forms of the river, trees and paths created the imposition of a hard recti-linear structure into the site was deemed to be to hard and ominous to the surrounding landscape. This combined with the desire to create a peaceful, tranquil organic place simply did not work. Therefore throughout the design the selection of Reclaimed bricks as the material of choice became of much more use as it allowed for tessellation. Using precedence in the form of DR Cahau Chak wing Building by frank Ghery the forms of the original city walls and the city river where weaved together and stretched and pulled to form the contour lines of a Brick tessellation pattern. These organic forms allow the Antakya Fire station to soften itself into the landscape and become less imposing to the organic surroundings. The tower itself also becomes double skinned and braced with steel blades which further form the training stairs required by the program. On the front side of the Building the bricks have been further spaced apart to allow for ventilation and Natural Light to enter the Post Call out Clean-down zone and the dining hall. Structural these tessellating brick walls are tied together with some steel bracing however the tessellation never exceeds more than 10mm per tier to a total of 200mm both directions therefore the-mass itself should hold it up and be balanced.

Locating Given a large site the issue as to locating the building within it became of relevance. Ultimately the building was placed based on the axis of the existing heritage building on the site, giving it adequate room to breath and respecting its boundaries and heritage. The Building was Further placed in such a way to minimize tree loss with a total of only 4 trees being removed which hopefully should be able to be relocated within the park itself. Adequate set backs allowing for the turning radius of the alliances was alls made meaning the trucks are able to pull straight out into the closest lanes without having to make multi- point turns. Additionally a very small road running along the river has been reactivated as a path with a small but clearly marked gravel path for the fire engines to run along side it.

With The monolithic Surroundings of Large civil buildings and the soft gardens of the site and effort to create dialogue with both sides of the building has been undertaken. On the Civil side, the Tower of the building speaks with the height of the surrounding structures, however rapidly tapers off towards the park to minimize its impact nestle itself amongst the tree heights around it. By doing this a more comfortable dialogue is able to be established between the park, the park user and the Fire station. Further helping link the p

Steping Park side 1:200 Given the nature of this project as a Civil project which would ultimately be tun and designed for a Government entity it is Critical that the design Follows the long established traditions of a strong civil Presence for this the Wall elements of the Building Are made to be quite strong and heavy when viewed from the street elevation. However from the park view the multiplicity of the design with various elements makes the building appear lighter and almost as if it is multiple. Softening it into the park surrounding.

Multi Team Use As outlined in the program the requirement for multiple teams to operate within the fire station is critical to the safe and smooth operation of the Fire brigade. As the kitchen has two of everything the other facilities that are shared in the station have 3 of everything per team. In the case of the 1:50s outlining the residences each double bunk dorm has 3 double lockers and 3 drawers. The intention of this is that The two Fire men who share a dorm in Team A store there bedding and some clothes in one of these lockers Team B and Team C also have one as well. This ensures that each fire fighter is always comfortably prepared to be stay the night, everything they need is there and it all works as planned. This design logic is also followed in the Clean-down area with the changing rooms. With a total of 18 change rooms each one has 3 lockers in it giving each fire fighter on each team there own private room during there shift. Partially liken to a Car wash the clean down area aims to get the fire fighters through as quickly, cleanly and efficiently as possible where is the dorms, with the warm ply paneling recycled hard wood floors and large full height windows is deigned to be a comfortable a peaceful place to relax out of site. It also provides one of the very few places in the building where the trucks are not directly visible. Almost creating an escape without ever leaving Residence Section 1:50 Residence Plan 1:50

Materiality & Construction Throughout the design of this project consideration as to the methodologies of construction and the materials used have been guided by feasibility and cost effectiveness. Almost all surfaces throughout the building utilize 90 degree angles and flat planes with primary structure being constructed from pre cast concrete pannels, which are very popular in the surrounding area for construction. Other local resources such as the numerous reclaimed bricks and Terracotta tiles from deconstruction of pre existing buildings are further incorporated heavily in the design with the roof being constructed form tiles and the external wall from reclaimed brick. Internal finished consist of Plywood, reclaimed local Turkish mahogany in specific area and Iranian Corten Steel in other areas. The Fire station doors are also to be constructed from thing plates of corten steel as to age and whether to match the reclaimed bricks. Clean down Area 1:200
