Cover tension band

The Tension bar apples a pressure to the cover creating a loop for the pen to sit in, in this case the loop pinchs the cover and creates the loop around the space pen

Po. Modules can be arranged in any way the user sees fit multiples of certain modules can be added and none of others, this allows for a trully customisable device

Being fully customisable the overall thickness of the Po. is completly variable

Po. Elevation 2:1 Even with he addition of multi tools and keys, the overall design still maintains a footprint no bigger than the standard slimlime wallet

Cast or milled aluminum constructuion for the hinge ensures a long life span and consistant reliability, Casting is less prefered due to its brittle nature however is more cost effective where is milled billet aluminium is by far superior in terms of strength but more expensive to produce

Being the core of the Po. the hinge design needed to be robust and strong, For this reason a interlocking design was chosen, this makes the hinge very strong and durable whilst still being relatively simple to construct. The choice of using aluminium as the material was made as it is a reasonablly light weight material when compared to alternatives such as steel and being non magenetic it has no chance of interfering with the RF-ID frequencies or metal detectors

Diameter Axel

Welded ends of hinge axel creates strength and prevents the Po. hinge from falling apart.

The Po. hinge has a maximum angle of 226.7째 which is more than enough to aid with the every day function of the Po. With the designed modules an angle of 180째 would likely never need to be exceeded however 226.7째 provides room for expansion

4.00

Countersunk Phillips head screws have been selected in the design as they are very user friendly and also maximise strength whilst preventing any un necessary added thickness to the Po. 5mm Heads taper into a 4mm threaded shaft at a chamfer of 45째. The length of the screw (x) is determined by each module and sized appropriately.

Threaded holes in the hinge allow for the depicted countersunk screws to be placed tightly and firmly in the Po. further enchancing strength

Copper mesh acts as a micro faraday cage blocking the RF-ID signals between cards preventing both card skimming and card miss reading. Inset allowing for hinge mounting aiming to reduce overall Po. thickness

For example a Transperth smart rider could be on one side and a visa pay wave equipped card on the other and the cards would not jam one another as occurs in normal wallets, this allows the user to not have to take out there cards when they wish to use them but rather flip to the correct card and use it from there

Cash pocket

The exterior cover is constructed from a single piece of material of varying lengths, in this case the material is a 300mm piece of stitched leather however as per the design spec of the Po. this can be customised

cover wraps around a pen of the users choice. this particular po was designed around the fischer space pen which proves to be an extremely popular pocket sized pen.

Cover plates simply attatch to the first module in the po continuing the uniform system designed

Po. Cover Perspective

Po. Cover Elevation 1:1

Copper plated aluminium is used as the metal for the cover to wrap around as it provides strength and rigidity. the copper plating completes the faraday cage which card holder module begins to form protecting the users card from being skimmed.

The piece of material loops around over a piece of 1mm aluminum and is then stitched around the sides. this forms a pocket on the inside of the cover where both coins and notes can be stored eliminating the need for a money clip and keeping the cash secure.

Pen.

Tension around the pen to ensure it does not fall out easily is created through the tension bar which is constructed from a 3.5mm diameter piece of chromed aluminum looped around itself as illustrated. Chrome was selected as it compliments the minimal aesthetic of the exterior cover

Po.

Part B

The final design for the Po. has bridged the gap that was first identified in assignment 1. The necessity of carrying numerous things in your pockets to ensure you have a comfortable an easy daily user experience has been enhanced. The Po. combines both your keys, wallet, pen and multi-tool into one minimal, comfortable and aesthetic piece, it further provides a degree of security, comfort and durability that was lacking in wallets beforehand. The addition of RF-ID blocking technology increases the security on your cards and prevents them from being skimmed and as an added bonus the slightly awkward task of taking out your smart rider of bank card to use them whilst juggling other things in your hands has been removed entirely. the addition of a pen means users no longer need to go searching for one as it will always be in there pocket and the further added multi tool modules means you will never not have the tools for the job again, whether it be out in the wood, in the classroom, workshop or the pub . The Po. is innovation in the fact that it is the first piece to combine all of these elements into one and i believe the first piece to do so without compromising overall usability or comfort to the users. The Po. is truly customizable a range of finishes are available and users can chop and change between any module as they see fit, the Po can be made to grow with you as you make your way through the day. The Po. is quite a complex design in terms of moving parts and materials, however when designing this i did not want to compromise the aesthetic and chose to stick with a very clean and simple exterior appearance. The leather finishes that are available for the cover compliment the chrome torsion band. The embossed ‘Po.” in the bottom left corner is a subtle and refined design choice that brands this item as what it is. the materials that where selected are very modern and of the times, Aluminum, Chrome, Carbon fiber and stainless steel have a timeless quality and will help the Po. Endure the test of time. The Po. is smart in appearance and clean cut and therefore can be used by anyone. The Po. overall has the potential to improve the lives of everyday people by simply making things more convenient, more accessible and overall more usable in a simple and humble way It is a subtle innovation and enhancement that has the potential to one day have people thinking ‘why on earth did we carry these things separately’.
