AMID A CALENDAR OF CANCELLED

and postponed gigs and festivals, Broadbeach Alliance was adamant that Blues on Broadbeach would not be completely abandoned. They have announced a 90-minute virtual concert premiering live on Facebook on Friday 15 May at 7 pm. Headlining Bandwidth will be Tommy Emmanuel, and he will be joined by Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows, Tami Neilson, and The Lachy Doley Group, amongst others. Visit the Blues on Broadbeach Facebook page for updates.

Steps: Combine vodka and distilled water in the dark glass bottle. Add essential oils one drop at a time, stirring each slowly into the alcohol so the oils thoroughly disperse in it. Once you finish, let it sit for about two days and gently shake before use. Vanilla Rose Perfume: A handful of fresh or dried rose petals, a handful of fresh or dried lavender, 1 vanilla bean, cheap vodka. Steps: Combine flowers and vanilla in a clean, glass mason jar. Pour enough vodka to cover the petals until they float (that’s why I said cheapo vodka!). Put the lid on and let it sit for four to six weeks. Strain the liquid and pour into a glass spray bottle. Do not drink! If we are finally free to get some exercise, there are numerous online resources for finding walks and trails close to home, where there may be less crowds! A few great places to start looking are bushwalkingnsw.com; alltrails.com/Australia; wildwalks.com. These often describe, map, provide access details and even categorise hundreds of hikes around the state by park, time taken and grade.

Everyone needs their own signature scent. There are many DIY perfume recipes to help discover that perfect blend, but before you set up the perfumery you should understand some basics. Perfumes contain three classes, or notes. Top Notes are the first impression of any fragrance. They’re the lightest of all notes and fade the quickest. The most common are citrus, herbs, and light fruits like berries. Middle Notes are the heart of the perfume and appear once the top notes evaporate. They last longer and comprise scents like rose, lavender, geranium and lemongrass. The Base Notes mingle with the middle notes to create the full body of the scent and should linger for hours. These include vanilla, musk, cedarwood and patchouli. Now that you’re an expert, here’s a couple of recipes to get you started. Patchouli Perfume: 2 tablespoons vodka, 1 tablespoon distilled water, a dark glass bottle. Essential oils – 20 drops sweet orange, 10 drops patchouli, 10 drops cedarwood, 5 drops of lavender, 5 drops of ylang-ylang, 5 drops bergamot.

the classic Al Stewart album; and in Well Read we keep the theme going in our review of a short story that is all about the intoxication of patchouli. After all that happy-hippie vibe, chilling out would seem almost guaranteed, if not downright compulsory. Stay cool… Tony Byron Bazaar

LAST WEEK I FOUND MYSELF LISTENING TO "YEAR OF THE CAT"

on a Spotify 70’s playlist. It’s a song by British singersongwriter Al Stewart, first released as a single in July 1976 - and it took me back. Back to the nostalgic post-hippie era of my late teens. It was like drifting on a paisley cloud, above a sea of purple waves, with music flowing gently by – how bohemian! There is a verse in the song that has always stayed with me While she looks at you so cooly And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea She comes in incense and patchouli So you take her, to find what's waiting inside The year of the cat. Aahhhh, the vibe, the serenity ……. but I wonder, what ever happened to patchouli, and what has it got to do with cats? You probably wondered that too? To answer this mystery required a brief journey through botanicals, perfumery and cultural history. Here’s what I dicovered. Patchouli is a plant from the family Lamiaceae, commonly called the "mint" or "deadnettle" family. Its leaves contain an essential oil used in aromatherapy, perfumes, skin lotions, incense and more recently, insect repellents. It has a strong, slightly sweet, and quite intoxicating scent, that is said to have a positive impact on libido. Patchouli is closely related to catnip, another plant in the Lamiaceae family. Anyone who has a cat will know what happens when it comes into contact with catnip. Smooching and rolling in the plant, purring intensifies and the poor little feline is sent crazy, as its pheromone receptors are taken on a psychedelic trip – not unlike a hippie on a free spirited, pot and patchouli love in! In the 60’s and 70’s patchouli was imported into Australia from Asia - in backpacks. Travelling hippies brought home the scented oil and incense as a reminder of their spiritual awakenings; perhaps partly inspired by The Beatles’ famous magical, mystical, drug enhanced tour of India in 1968. The fragrant patchouli was seen as a natural product, free of the sophisticated marketing hype of the French brands, and much better suited to the ethos of the laid back, environmentally conscious earth children. It was perhaps coincidental that the strong fragrance was able to mask the scent of cannabis, but the popularity of patchouli oil peaked at about the same time as the thick smoke of marijuana hit its zenith. Patchouli, dare I say, may have found a perfect home in 1970’s Byron. Like "Year of the Cat", I was pleased to discover that the patchouli beat goes on. There are apparently still plenty of fans who now mix the oil with bergamot, cedar oil or ylangylang, to give it a more modern day feel. In Around Home this week we tell you how to make your own patchoulibased perfume. In Ear Candy you can discover, or relive,

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY VENUS, THE ARCHETYPE

for love, connection and pleasure starts its 6 week retrograde phase in Gemini. Relationships and personal values are under revision and scrutiny. Our social life, how close we come to each other, or how many people can meet in one place at the same time, are also hot issues during this time. Gemini as an inquisitive air sign, asks many questions and tends to rely on the intellect more than the heart. Venus rules our values, cooperation and consideration; in Gemini she likes to keep a flexible and experimental approach to what is considered fair and proportionate. She can be innovative, but also scattered and easily distracted. Venus is also in a long-lasting square to Neptune which makes it extremely difficult to discern the truth. Smoke and mirrors, lies and deceit are rampant. On Friday Jupiter, the giant planet that stands for goodwill, a positive attitude, culture and travel, turns retrograde as well. Jupiter and Pluto dance with each other, in close union throughout this year, and from now on until September they are in retrograde mode. Worldwide trade and the way things are done undergo long-lasting and fundamental change. During the whole week the Sun in Taurus forms a practical earth trine first to Pluto (exact on Friday) and then to Jupiter (exact on Monday). This aspect generates a ‘can-do’ attitude and there is great determination to move on. Nevertheless the process of defining a new path or finding the ‘new normal’ is challenging when Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are retrograde! Expect serious frustration on a global level… On Wednesday the Sun moves into Gemini where Mercury and retro Venus already reside. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The Chariot Tarot card heralds a new beginning. Determination and singlemindedness are the important ingredients that promise success this week. The opportunities you see now may lead to bigger developments soon. Don’t get distracted by mirages though, stay centred!

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

i GEMINI

a LIBRA

The 2 of Wands symbolises the path of the warrior and fits Aries perfectly. You have the power to wield influence, yet as a wise warrior you must choose your battles carefully! Be mindful and aim for harmony and balance rather than confrontation.

h TAURUS

The 3 of Swords indicates times of mental overactivity and reactivity that can be quite challenging, because they darken your mood and your whole life perspective. With Venus retrograde in your sign for many months, reach out to friends and family, don’t punish yourself in isolation, feeling unworthy if you are not happy and upbeat.

j CANCER

The Knight of Swords is ambitious, decisive and often quite opinionated. With him by your side, you might find yourself immersed in an all-absorbing mission this week, and because of your single-mindedness you surely succeed, even if things take a bit longer than anticipated.

When the Tower Tarot card appears you have very little individual choice, and you just have to stay flexible in your approach when you experience upheaval or stressful developments. Look for the silver lining, which makes it easier to surrender, let go and rise from the ashes like a phoenix.

The 4 of Wands symbolises a time of endings and new beginnings. In your eagerness for the new, you might forget to celebrate how far you have come… how about a little special celebration to acknowledge your worthiness and your latest achievements.

The Death Tarot card indicates profound change and transformation. Often there is a tremendous inner struggle involved and it never looks pretty. Peace can only come by accepting your new circumstances. Any resistance prolongs and deepens your pain.

b SCORPIO

The 10 of Cups promises a fulfilling week. It is your time to catch up with family, friends and like-minded people, and share the good vibes. Before you meet up or talk on the phone, just spend a minute thinking about what you’re grateful for in your connection to that person. This practice opens your heart and allows love to flow.

The Emperor Tarot card symbolises personal power and leadership, used in the most benevolent way possible. As a humanitarian and a visionary you are called to use your ability to organise people and priorities, therefore creating order and new structures out of chaotic situations.

The Star Tarot card implies that it is time to actualise your creative ideas and trust in your abilities to make them reality. Is it worthwhile? You only find the answer to this question as you embark on the journey… Be aware of how you feel when you get into your ‘flow-state’ and you might be surprised how much you enjoy it. Suspend the inner critic!

e AQUARIUS

The Ace of Wands can be a blessing, but also a challenge. The huge amount of physical/ mental/spiritual energy that is available to you right now, must be funnelled into an allconsuming project, otherwise you might get extremely frustrated. If you don’t know where to invest your vigour, look for a project that supports others.

f PISCES

With the Prince of Disks by your side, you might find it quite easy to stay pragmatic, patient and productive. As you take care of all the little things in your life, you know that you are laying a solid foundation for building your new world. This also involves taking great care of your body, via wholesome nutrition and exercise.

DEAR KEENWA,

I've been seeing this bird. I'm really into her, and all is going well. I mean, I think it is. She asked me for 'health reasons' if we could be exclusive, within weeks. Then a series of coffee breakfast dates online ensued which seemed a bit weird. When I invited her for a romantic picnic on the weekend, she insisted on sitting four metres apart, on her own picnic rug... and no pash afterwards. Is she just not into me? Courting Clancy

DEAR COURTING CLANCY,

Yep, getting to know someone without the usual societal capitalist distractions, and the newfound slow pace of life that allows for authentic and deep connection, really has it's challenges. Like a sleepover immediately equals defacto status to avoid any crosscontamination. Gone are the days of try before you buy. I mean, what's next? Arranged marriages based on astrological compatibility, and chosen by our local immunologist?

DEAR KEENWA,

Underground parties. They're really making a comeback in The Shire. The biggest difference between the Byron bush doofs of the 90s, and the one I attended on the weekend is the entry fee. Eleven thousand big ones. Per person. As bond, in case the cops turned up. Because I hadn't left the house for three months, I paid it, but I really don't know how long I can keep this up. - Party Poverty

DEAR PARTY POVERTY,

What kind of parties are we talking? Obvs not the free, online and unsatisfying kind. There is another kind of party going down, a-la naturale vaccination kind. Officials are receiving reports of these COVID-19 parties whereby non-infected people mingle with an infected person in an effort to catch the virus, in the hope that people infected with the coronavirus become immune longterm (exactly what my mama did with the ol' chicken pox back in the day).

This week's review

TITLE: Patchouli AUTHOR: Jerry W. McKinney NUMBER OF PAGES: 12 READING TIME: 15 minutes PRICE: $4.95 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Stu is a handyman and tenant in an apartment block. He likes his job and the opportunities it provides to interact with the tenants. Feeling a little lonely and increasingly worried that his life is slipping by uneventfully, Stu is excited when a new tenant moves in next door. Beth is green eyed, attractive, seductive and mysterious, and she seems to be surrounded by the scent of patchouli. He becomes obsessed with her and what she may be hiding in her apartment, and he is puzzled by the odour that lingers but is masked by that overwhelming smell of patchouli. WHO IT'S FOR: All you need is about fifteen minutes to find out for yourself if this story can keep you enthralled and entertained from start to finish, or if the short story format means it all ends too abruptly. You definitely won’t put Patchouli down once you start, and you may well find yourself haunted long after you close the cover. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Jerry McKinney is a master of the short story and knows how to capture his readers' attention from the first sentence to the last. Horror, suspense, love and lust often form the basis of his stories and this is no different. It may be only a dozen pages, but it is well written and well crafted, with a surprising number of twists.

NOTABLE QUOTES: “The sound of Beth’s soft music whispered through the air. Often Stu would turn off the television and listen in the dark. He would imagine her body swaying to the beats of the music, her green eyes staring into his, and the patchouli.”

STANDOUT TRACKS: Year of the Cat, On the Border, Broadway Hotel, One Stage Before. PERFECT FOR: Vinyl record spinning, valve amp humming, bass, mid and tweeters purring, no interruptions. LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Alan Parsons Project, Gerry Rafferty, Donald Fagan, Todd Rundgren. YEAR OF THE CAT WRITTEN BY ALISTAIR IAN STEWART, PETER JOHN WOOD

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Year of the Cat ARTIST: Al Stewart RELEASED: 1976 GENRE: Soft Rock / Progressive Pop BIO: Year of the Cat, the seventh studio album by

Al Stewart, was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, in January 1976. Stewart’s lyrics could stand alone as poetry, and the musical catches never fade. The title track started life as a song Stewart wrote in 1966 called "Foot of the Stage" with lyrics about Tony Hancock, a famous but very troubled British comedian who killed himself in 1968. Stewart reworked the lyrics and the title years later, inspired by the movie “Casablanca”. With Alan Parsons as producer and engineer, Stewart was able to assemble a great cast of musicians to record this album. Peter White - guitar, keyboards; Tim Renwick – guitar; Peter Wood – keyboards; Don Lobster – keyboards; George Ford – bass; Stuart Elliott - drums, percussion, background vocals.

WHAT TO EXPECT: The best thing about Year of the Cat is that it provides so much more than you might expect. The title track is obviously a standout, with some lengthy instrumental solos featuring cello, violin, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, synthesizer and sax. Parsons had Phil Kenzie add the sax, which transformed the original folk song into the jazz-influenced ballad that launched Al Stewart onto the charts. But there’s plenty more to listen to on this album.

On a morning from a Bogart movie In a country where they turn back time You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre Contemplating a crime She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running Like a watercolor in the rain Don't bother asking for explanations She'll just tell you that she came In the year of the cat She doesn't give you time for questions As she locks up your arm in hers And you follow 'till your sense of which direction Completely disappears By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls There's a hidden door she leads you to These days, she says, I feel my life Just like a river running through The year of the cat While she looks at you so cooly And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea She comes in incense and patchouli So you take her, to find what's waiting inside The year of the cat Well morning comes and you're still with her And the bus and the tourists are gone And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket So you have to stay on But the drum-beat strains of the night remain In the rhythm of the newborn day You know sometime you're bound to leave her But for now you're going to stay In the year of the cat Year of the cat

WHAT WE LIKE: After Year of the Cat, the other single from the album was On the Border, which features some standout Spanish acoustic guitar. The violin takes centre stage in Broadway Hotel, and as the silky horsehair slides across cat gut strings, it demands your attention. In One Stage Before Stewart sings about reincarnation. The attention grabbing guitar solo and clever use of voice
