I USED TO BELONG TO AN

over 50’s club. We met once a month to discuss stuff of interest to people of our age demographic – retirement plans, golf handicaps, investments, ailments – even relationship advice sometimes found it’s way on to the agenda. The only rule for membership was, naturally enough, that you were over 50, and believed “you’re never too old to have fun”. Every six months similar clubs would get together for a “Wellness” conference - a weekend of golf, banter, food and wine, plus some guest speakers to tell us the other things we should be doing to help our health, wealth and happiness. Slightly morbidly, it was traditional to start each conference with an “In Memoriam” tribute, where we would pause to remember any friends who may have passed away during the previous six months. Mother’s clubs might celebrate births – singles clubs, marriages – we got deaths. By the time the Annual General Meeting came around, for all clubs in the country, the “In Memoriam” tribute would stretch out to a 15 minute power point presentation. A quarter hour of silence, as photos of deceased members flashed across the screen – photos and names of mostly strangers. As the tributes got longer, I found it increasingly depressing to be constantly reminded of my mortality. I stopped going to the over 50’s meetings in 2015. Fast forward to 2020, and mortality rates dominate the news –

ARE the news. Each night we discuss the COVID Curve - how many infected, how many in hospital, how many in intensive care, how many deceased. Since the start of the year, tragically the virus has been responsible for the deaths of about 180 people in Australia – or one a day – and we track, trace and report every one. There are 25 million Australians and 80,000 have died so far this year for all sorts of other reasons – that’s over 400 a day. Imagine if we detailed all of those. Once upon a time we argued about climate change. We were excited about the sports results. We wondered about Brexit. We loved China. We laughed at Trump’s ridiculous Mexican wall. How things have changed. Global emissions targets are achieved without fanfare, and without really trying. Spectator sports seem tainted and slightly contrived. Brexit is just the beginning of a global retreat to nationalism. “Made in China” now comes with a warning. We have stopped singing “we’re all in this together” - now we yell “don’t stand so close to me” as we erect our own Mexican walls – a lovely orange plastic barrier between Tweed Heads and Coolangatta, a detention inspired farm fence in Melbourne’s public housing precinct, and some reinvigorated and reconfigured State-of-origin borders to keep the rest of us “safe” from the southerners. Staying safe at home means my boredom grows faster than my beard. “Cheap wine and a three-day growth” has turned into a six-month scruffy hangover. There are 7.8 billion people in the world. One million die every week for all sorts of reasons – 98% of them are NOT Covid related. Sooner or later we will have to learn to live with this virus, and occasionally die from this virus. The certainty of death and taxes has not changed. It started with a kiss – who ever thought it would come to this? Tony - Byron Bazaar

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ALL WEEK MERCURY, THE COMMUNICATION

wizard, triggers the most difficult part of the current astro climate which is the stellium (= conglomeration of several planets) of Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn in Capricorn. The whole stellium is retrograde, therefore gains that have been made throughout this year, and in particular since May, might be lost. In the best case scenario the path ahead must be reconsidered and reformed. Mercury in Cancer is extremely concerned about safety, security and stability. His worries are difficult to soothe while facts, goals and right process are shrouded in a mist of deception or disillusion (Mercury trine Neptune). Nevertheless if you find a way to extract yourself from all the ills of this world and dive deeply into the creative realms, you may find this week quite inspiring and constructive. Writing, mindfulness and mental health are also related to Mercury. In combination with a Sun/ Chiron trine (exact on Saturday) and a Sun/Uranus square (exact on Sunday) some surprising, exciting or plainly weird ideas might actually bring a new perspective and promote alternatives. Be careful to not overreact to all the different stimuli, fears and opinions, and remember kindness when others don’t agree with you. This is especially important during the Aquarian Full Moon on Tuesday which coincides with a Mars/Jupiter square. It may well mark a make-it-or-break-it point. Overconfidence and risk-taking might lead to new trouble; at the same time nerves are raw, making it easy to over-react. There is also a danger of feeling morally superior and therefore super-judgemental! On Wednesday Mercury moves into playful, fun-loving and at times a bit bossy Leo. He is very fast right now and takes only two weeks to traverse this sign. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Death Tarot card appears when profound change is knocking at the door of your consciousness and you have no choice but to open up. Deep inside you may be quite aware of the fact that you are ending a major phase of your life and that it is time to reinvent yourself, but you still might resist which makes your pain persist.

h TAURUS

The 6 of Cups symbolises goodwill expressed in kind and charitable acts, which could also be directed to random people you don’t know. You experience great pleasure when you are giving and you also love to receive. Right now you have the uplifting ability to see the silver lining in otherwise hopeless situations and you can inspire others.

i GEMINI

The 9 of Cups is often called the wish card. Try a little meditation and visualise your biggest wish coming true. No matter whether it is about love, family, health, money or security, if you can tap into the feeling of receiving what you wish for, you have already elevated your spirit and you are getting closer to the manifestation of what you want.

j CANCER

The Princess of Cups represents your enormous sensitivity to everything around you – people, vibes and your environment. She nudges you to cast aside old, overprotective behaviour patterns, e.g. shyness, and let others see and feel you. No need to try to control or manipulate any situation, just be true to yourself and be just that…

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The Devil Tarot card points out that it is time to deal with your own shadow. Which situations trigger you into reactive, obsessive or dysfunctional responses to a loved one? Now you have a chance to free yourself and adopt a new, creative attitude to solving problems regarding relationships.

The 5 of Wands represents strife, anxiety and frustration. You may be arguing with yourself or with others, and the more entrenched it gets, the more you get bogged down feeling limited and disempowered. Give yourself some space, take time out in nature and let the wind blow away the cobwebs of your mind.

a LIBRA

The Empress is the archetype of feminine leadership expressed in tender care and nurturing. She lovingly conveys her wisdom and insight to everyone, and she has great compassion for the nature of human beings, while keeping a clear focus on the bigger picture. She assists you to establish clear boundaries, so you can say yes when you mean it and no when you have to.

b SCORPIO

The 6 of Wands brings acknowledgement and recognition. You may even feel a little proud about the fact that if you follow your inner guidance, it usually leads to triumph and success. Remember, when you create win/win situations your own satisfaction multiplies.

The Ace of Swords offers great insights into the workings of the mind. This week you feel switched on, alert, ready to think outside the box and implement creative ideas. Your main power is to cut through your own confusion and doubt, and as you do that you help others find clarity as well.

The Hermit Tarot card suggests you focus inward and give up distractions as often as you remember to during this week. Spend some time alone in contemplation; it helps you to get back on track with the things that are most important for you. Introspection and soul-search bring you all the answers you are looking for.

e AQUARIUS

The 8 of Swords symbolises a hyperactive and overanalytical mind that keeps thinking in circles and pays too much attention to other people’s opinions and convictions. To regain inner peace you may have to slow down, get in touch with your own feelings and allow yourself to be guided by your intuition.

f PISCES

With the 3 of Cups drawn your heart is full and overflowing; so much to give, so much to share and so many good vibes that come straight back to you! This is the perfect week to celebrate life with friends and family, but it also works wonders with business contacts because you radiate openness and trust.

DEAR KEENWA,

I was seeing a guy. We took our time getting to know one another, and communicate well. We got super close one night, the closest we've ever been with anyone. The next morning he tells me its bad timing, that we cannot be together as he had a spiritual detox planned for the next six months...The Feminine Cleanse. What the fork is that? It's supposed to make him a better man for women to relate to, but feels a bit like I won't be the one to benefit from it. I'm so sick of being the 'lesson' woman, where men learn so much from me, then move on. Any tips? - Lucy Lesson

DEAR LUCY LESSON,

Like most spiritual paths this one reeks of sensitive new age white man entitlement. Oh hey babe, no worries, just go sit in your cave for as long as you need, i'll just be over here raising the children, running the house 'til you reach enlightenment! Yet another case of unavailable, avoidant, running man syndrome. Which appears to be in your rearview mirror for the forever foreseeable future until you take a new spiritual path of your own...the Dick Detox.

DEAR KEENWA,

The Dick Detox. It's this new diet that all the Shire trustafarians are doing, to be more conscious in their relating with men. Have you heard of it, and do you think it could help me? - Debbie Disappointment

DEAR DEBBIE DISAPPOINTMENT,

Absolutely. It's a spiritual path whereby you hold out for one of the 2% of the population that is actually willing to do the work to be in relationship with you, and give you the love, support and ravishment that you desire and deserve. You basically do nothing to prove your lovability. You don't chase love. You wait and see which warrior turns up and convinces you with his actions that he actually brings something enriching to your already wholesome world, without taking anything away. There's a transition period. The first twenty blokes will get cranky, and try someone else. But then 'cos all women are on the diet, a cultural shift occurs. All of a sudden there ain't too many dicks on the dance floor no more.

This week's review

TITLE: Guns, Germs and Steel AUTHOR: Jared Diamond NUMBER OF PAGES: 425 READING TIME: 8 hours 45 minutes PRICE: $25.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Diamond calls this a “short history

of everybody for the last 13,000 years”. As a professor of geography, Diamond examines the development of civilisations and, not surprisingly, argues that societies blessed with geographic and environmental advantages were more able to advance from nomadic hunter gatherers to stable agricultural communities. This “luck” nurtured the development of written communication, technology, organised governments and exploration. Superior skills and resources, applied to the creation of advanced weaponry, facilitated the domination of other communities. An unplanned, but undoubtedly powerful ally, was an immunity to diseases. Germs exported by travelling explorers, missionaries and armies weakened indigenous populations – with devastating consequences.

WHO IT'S FOR: History helps us understand the present

and provides a framework for thinking about the future. What helped create the modern world in which we live? What might we leverage to support sustainable growth? As COVID infection rates soar, and many economies crumble, will we see germs again rearranging world order?

FOR MORE INFO CALL 0487 003 765

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This is a well-researched

theory on why different societies and cultures may have prospered through the ages, whilst others died out. First published in 1997, this book went on to be an international bestseller and won a Pulitzer Prize for Diamond – but its controversial premise also lead to many negative critiques.

NOTABLE QUOTES: “While nomads and tribespeople

occasionally defeat organised governments and religions, the trend over the past 13,000 years has been for the nomads and tribespeople to lose.”

ALBUM TITLE: Toon Town Lullaby ARTIST: James Reyne RELEASED: July 2020 GENRE: Folk rock / pop BIO: Toon Town Lullaby is James Reyne’s 12th solo

studio album and his first in eight years. Reyne has had many hits throughout his 40+ year career, selling more than a million albums with Australian Crawl in the 80’s. He joined with Daryl Braithwaite and others to produce Company Of Strangers and has created many hits as an enduring solo artist.

Please apply with a cv & cover letter detailing your experience to

WHAT TO EXPECT: Reyne writes about people and places he knows, and times and events we are familiar with – all with a healthy dose of sarcasm. The music is easy to listen to, even understated, allowing the lyrics to take centre stage, like in the title track. “I’m gonna kick some tyres / and light some fires / and punch a hole in the sky …. I'm gonna leave my room / and hand my gloom / onto some other guy.” WHAT WE LIKE: From the opening Toon Town Lullaby,

Reyne’s customary wit and clever wordplay are all here, along with acoustic guitar combined with simple harmonies. Low Hanging Fruit is laidback, but with a cynical view of the music industry –“ I don’t see bravery, I just see knavery”. This Time strums along like a BBQ sing-a-long favourite; The Tallest Man I Ever Knew is a tribute to his good friend and ex-band mate Brad Robinson, who died over 20 years ago – with uptempo guitar riffs and some lovely literary references. The album closes out with the tuneful Wrong Guy “But your shadows out-dance you wherever you run”.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Toon Town Lullaby, Low Hanging Fruit, Wrong Guy.

PERFECT FOR: Funky Friday nights, smooth Saturdays, lazy Sunday afternoons.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Australian Crawl, Dave Gleeson, Ian Moss, Richard Clapton.
