Global Local __________________________________________ After living overseas for a number of years in various parts of our wee planet I always find the debate about what makes you a local and what does not pointless, controversial but mostly entertaining. To be a local, or considered a local in Byron, The Northern Rivers or wherever you lay your hat you sometimes have to get approval from the selftitled gate keepers and guardians. Maybe the “I am a Local Committee” should stop and think about the following at their next fat chewing meeting. A local is or is not someone who is/was: born here, went to school here, left the area but returns at Christmas or for special occasions, owns property here, lives here now but lived in Sydney for 20 years, has just moved here, owns a business here, knows 20 locals on a first name basis, knows 50 locals on a first name basis, knows 100 locals on a first name basis, does 3 or more of the following activities here: goes to a farmers market, drinks at The Rails, protests, walks the lighthouse, surfs Tallows, goes to garage sales, volunteers for local causes, has Victorian license plates but also has a bumpersticker saying “lock the gates,” has a stamp in their passport stating they are local as approved the “I am a Local Committee”, cares about the above. If you really think about it, most of us aren’t actually local. Unless you are of aboriginal descent, your great great grandparents more than likely came over as prisoners. So take it easy when you’re judging who is local and who is not. The way I see it, we’re all locals, some have just been here a little longer than others.

Parking Privileges

Anonymous __________________________________________ I’m not sure why so many people are up in arms about the introduction of paid parking?!? On one hand, residents are endlessly banging on about Council not doing enough about the poor state of the roads, public toilets, lack of local transport, graffiti, etc. But on the other hand they won’t support a paid parking scheme that will raise an estimated $2 million per year! Nearly everyone agrees that Council cannot afford to maintain (let alone improve) the current infrastructure for our 1.376 million visitors per year by only drawing on a relatively small number of rate payers. The idea of a bed tax gets thrown around, but over 50% (yep - 695,000!) of those visitors are domestic day trippers that would not contribute a cent through a bed tax. Just like nearly every other destination in the world, visitors expect to pay for the privilege to park in our beautiful little town! I reckon $100 a year (that’s only $2 per week!!!) is a bargain to see some long awaited improvements.

M.K. __________________________________________ Love the plethora of beautiful food we have available in the grocery stores (big and small) in our little town BUT what the hell is up with the food on the shelves being past it’s expiry date? Nearly every week when I do my shop I pull a can or bag from the shelves to find that it’s past date. I try to be vigilant about checking the dates before I purchase but sometimes I get home and then notice the expiry has come and gone. Annoying! What’s really shocking though is when I tell an employee at the store that the product is expired, and then I come back the next week and it’s still on the shelf! I don’t think that is best practice because there are many people who would just trust that the grocer is doing their part to make sure the products they are selling are within date! For the price we pay for food in this country, we should be able to purchase in confidence. Step up your game, grocers!

Anonymous __________________________________________ Right now, I can’t see the wood from the trees. Here is a crazy idea I’ve given very little thought too. If we really care about the local environment, koalas, turtles, dolphins, trees, plants, snakes, goannas and want them to flourish and survive in Byron perhaps we should all pack our bags, exit Byron and leave them to it. We could all move elsewhere, stop writing letters to papers, posting to social media groups, disturbing council meetings and having council meetings. It would be a developers paradise for animals, trees, fish etc. Is it time we moved on or is it time we pulled together for the greater good and not our own self benefit? Easier said than done.
