In 2008, Odense Municipality is installing WCs, paths, a dirty jump track for mountain bikers and a jetty for the Svanen tour boat that sails around the fjord during the summer. In addition, the big green hall of steel by the future harbour is being made ready to provide shelter from the rain and wind. In time, it could be equipped with a climbing wall, skater facilities and glass sections. Finally, some of the hilly landscape is being supplemented with lots of little hills where children and the young-at-heart can let off steam all day long. The project originally also included some large bathing lakes, but out of consideration to the bird life, these will not go ahead. Already, Stige Ă˜ offers recreational value towards the south, with a marina and a kayak club, and towards the north, where the tip of the island is composed of Sorthusene and a long isthmus. Sorthusene (“the black housesâ€?) are a cluster of tarred houses built using driftwood from Odense Canal in the early 20th century as shelters for fishermen and hunters. Today, they are a sanctuary for their owners. The very north tip of the island is called Koholm and is a favourite destination for anglers; because of the strong currents, they can feel as if they are fishing in a river, wading up to their waists as they try to hook a fjord trout.
