Steen Karlsen was born in Frederikshavn in 1960. He is married to Gilda, and together, they have a son, Frederik. Steen is also the stepfather of Sonny, Camilla and Ditte. Steen Karlsen originally trained as a shipbuilder at Frederikshavn Værft A/S in 1981 and later worked at the drawing department of Ørskov Skibsværft until February 2003. In 1999, Steen and Gilda opened Galleri7 in Frederikshavn. Today, they have some 20 artists affiliated with the gallery, including Johnny Madsen, Peter Viskinde, Stig Hoffmeyer and Anders Glob. In the last four years, Galleri7 has opened a department in Skagen during the summer months.
Steen Karlsen has sold paintings to almost all parts of the world and has delivered works to former US president Bill Clinton and vice president Al Gore.

Steen Karlsen spent his time from 2007 to 2010 painting 12 large paintings inspired by music by the Danish musicians Johnny Madsen, Allan Olsen and Benny Andersen/ Povl Dissing. The works are called “Musikalske Penselstrøg” (Musical Brushwork) and were shown at a large exhibition in Copenhagen in 2011 where all the musicians played. The exhibition increased the interest in his paintings further with broadcasts on several TV stations.
