Scott Rasmussen (Class of ’16) has been finishing in the top of his fleet in national Olympic-class Laser sailboat competitions.

The International Laser Class Association ranks him in the Top 5 nationally in his class.

Scott attended the International Sailing (ISAF) World Cup in Miami alongside competitors representing 53 countries who were vying for positions in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. He took seventh place in one of the races, competing against top Olympic medalists.

He will be sailing in four national events in California this summer. In his final race of the season, he will compete at the U.S. Youth Sailing Championship in Michigan, which is the qualifier for the 2015 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in Portugal.

Scott has been training weekends this past year at the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club with top Olympic coaches, with his sights set on the Youth Worlds and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. We wish him luck!

Vikings Travel Abroad

The travel bug has bitten. Bishop Verot students and teachers have traveled to Europe three times in the past three years. Thanks to the efforts of Suzie O’Grady, Assistant Principal for Curriculum and former history teacher extraordinaire, Bishop Verot has revived their European travel experiences for students. Mrs. O’Grady knew the impact traveling abroad could have on our students. The opportunity to travel abroad is an exciting endeavour bringing countless educational opportunities. Both she and I taught about history, yet neither of us had traveled to the places we passionately discussed during our lessons.

Unfortunately, during my time at Verot (‘82 grad) and my children’s time at Verot, (Shannon ‘05, and Ryan ‘08) this experience was not available. However, I did understand how a trip such as this could positively affect a young person after my daughter traveled to Australia and New Zealand during middle school. She came back with a perspective that reached beyond the walls of her school, town and country. You cannot gain that by simply reading about it in a book. The spark ignited in my daughter led her to a career that allows her to explore the world.

Many parents are a little reticent to send their children abroad, often being their first time overseas or in some cases anywhere without them. However, parents have found the lessons their children learn through travel experiences are well worth it. Students who travel get to experience other cultures, meet new people and explore unfamiliar places.

This will undoubtedly shape their world-view at an early age; they might even come home with a greater sense of confidence and responsibility. Many children are very comfortable with the conveniences of our country and the lifestyle that their parents provide for them. Travel broadens minds beyond the great USA, take us out of our comfort zone and

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT encourage self-reflection. Many become inspired by their abroad experiences that they want to travel abroad in college, pursue a degree in international business or even a career that allows them to explore the great world around them.

I suggest having your child travel to a country rich in history, surrounded by ancient ruins, century old buildings, and medieval churches. When they actually see a place they have read about in books, it will give them a rich understanding of the past. Have your child travel to a developing country to see what it is like to live without modern conveniences such as plumbing and electricity.

Not only will this build character, but they’ll never take modern luxuries for granted again. Have your child travel somewhere untouched by society, where they can escape the commercialized world; this is guaranteed to put them in touch with nature and their surroundings.

Personally and professionally traveling has enabled me to gain insights and memories that will last a lifetime. As I begin Group in London planning to teach World History this year, I will be able to share my first-hand accounts of the places we study. Teaching about the opulence of Versailles, the regional influences of Italy, the mountains of Switzerland, the monarchy of England, the author William Shakespeare and the Viking influences in Dublin will never be the same for me. It is now more real, more exciting and more important for me to share with my students. BV

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT My fellow Vikings, Here we are at the end of another school year. It has been a wonderful year with so many student accomplishments. We had a graduating class of 146 students that earned more than $10 million in college scholarships. Our STEM Team, Model UN, Mock Trial and Academic Team all took significant honors as they competed across the nation and our girls soccer and boys baseball teams competed in the final four. These are just a few of the highlights of this past school year. A big thank you is due to our dedicated faculty.

Each day they step up to the mission of Bishop Verot Catholic High School by providing our students opportunities for lifelong learning and leadership. A big thank you is also due to our donors, without your continued dedication and support, these student accomplishments would not be possible. T

he Viking Nation knew that with 12 returning seniors having playoff experience, this team had the makings of a very special season. “State Champs” was the team’s motto! Having been to three consecutive State Final Fours, the team was poised and ready to make a playoff run. Their journey began January 3rd, 2014 and concluded May 15th at 1:14 a.m.

Forty-seven practices, a trip to The National High School Invitational in Cary, NC, and many bumps throughout the season, this team was prepared for anything! As the 2014 playoffs began, the seniors knew this was their last opportunity. They led the team to three convincing victories over Clewiston, Lincoln Park, and Berkeley Prep (Tampa), which resulted in taking the Vikings to their fourth Final Four in four years! Positive energy and team chemistry prepared the players for the semi final game against Trinity Catholic.

May 14, 11:31 p.m.: After four hours of weather delays, the team and Viking nation was ready to compete. Trinity started out fast after a solo home-run in the bottom of the first. They struck again in the 4th with an RBI single. In the 6th inning, the Viking bats awoke. After a walk, stolen base and an RBI single, the Vikings trailed 2-1 going into the 7th. With two outs, Viking’s Evan Dougherty singled and stole 2nd base. One pitch, one hard hit ball and one diving catch later, the Viking’s season had ended at 1:14 a.m. Yes, it will be known as “THE CATCH” for many years to come and for a good reason being ESPN’s #2 play of the night.

Even though the goal wasn’t met, championship rings weren’t ordered, and a 2014 state championship banner won’t hang in the gymnasium, friendships were solidified, memories were made, and lives were changed for the better. “Non Excidet”. BV

Mission Statement

Bishop Verot Catholic High School, building on 50 years of tradition and excellence in Catholic education, is a community of faith and learning dedicated to service and centered on Christ. An educational ministry of the Diocese of Venice, Florida, Bishop Verot serves students from southwest Florida as well as international students in a co-educational, college preparatory environment. Bishop Verot provides students with opportunities for lifelong learning and leadership, teaching skills for college, and values for life.

Bishop Verot Catholic High School, a community of faith and family rooted in the charisms of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis De Sales, and Bishop Augustin Verot, maintains a strong and passionate Catholic identity using the Gospel values of love, respect, and justice as guides. Dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled faculty and staff work in concert with parents, parishes, and the community to provide a contemporary and exemplary educational opportunity that responds to the needs of all students. By academic year 2017-2018, Bishop Verot Catholic High School will be recognized as the preeminent co-educational Catholic secondary school in southwest Florida with an enrollment meeting the facilities’ capacity, a rigorous college preparatory program, and state-of-the-art instructional technology, serving individual students with their unique abilities and achievement levels.

Strategic Goals & Objectives

Goal #1: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will strengthen and maintain a passionate Catholic identity which inspires the Verot community to forge an intimate relationship with God, knowledge of faith, and a commitment to service and spiritual growth through a dynamic campus ministry, theology curriculum and community life.

Second Year Objectives: In 2014 Bishop Verot instituted Monday morning prayer service for the faculty and staff.

The faculty and staff now return to school after the Christmas break with a “Day of Service & Reflection” to begin the new semester. The Mission Committee makes continuing recommendations to the administration and the BVHS School Board regarding the Catholic Identity of the school. In order to define and promote the unique charism of Bishop Verot and its influences, the Mission Committee is developing a comprehensive guide to our “tradition, charism, & Catholic identity” to be published for the 2014-2015 school year.

Goal #2: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will work collaboratively with the Diocese of Venice, Board of Trustees, School Board, and administration to broaden the understanding and communication of roles and responsibilities in order to ensure the most effective model to sustain the school’s mission Second Year Objectives: There is ongoing reviewing and updating school policies which are reflected in the Bishop Verot Policy Manual updated each spring. The school administration continues to research best practices in Catholic School governance and administration in similar schools.

Goal #3: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will develop and implement a comprehensive enrollment management plan, based on contemporary generational research, with increased parent, staff, and student recruitment and student retention.

Second Year Objectives: The Admissions department has implemented a comprehensive enrollment management plan that defines the roles and responsibilities of faculty, students and parents. Technology is utilized to streamline all aspects of the admissions process. Our current students and parents act as good will ambassadors for Bishop Verot.

Goal #4: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will strengthen and promote its college preparatory curriculum with enhanced instructional delivery and the integration of appropriate technology in order to best serve individual students with their unique abilities and achievement levels as they prepare for success in life-long learning and leadership.

Second Year Objectives: Bishop Verot provides professional development opportunities to ensure the integration of instructional technology in the classroom. There is ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of peer to peer tutoring and the development of student leaders. A student iAmbassador program is being developed to assist in school wide iPad integration. Programs are being streamlined to help faculty communicate student academic information to their department chairs.

Second Year Objectives: The Technology Committee assesses the success of Bishop Verot Catholic High School’s 1:1 technology program as well as identifying, reviewing, researching and recommending new options to continue in the establishment of a world class comprehensive technology integration plan. Opportunities for professional development will continue to be a key component of our success. The long-term technology procurement plan is continually assessed and reviewed which will help in maintaining the highest level of technology systems possible.

Goal #7: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will reinvent its guidance and counseling services by utilizing state of the art technology, reviewing roles, and responsibilities of the Guidance staff, and researching Student Advisory Programs in order to provide increased personal attention to all students throughout their high school career.

Second Year Objectives: In concert with our increased enrollment, we will add additional personnel in order to maximize the services provided for the growing student population. A comprehensive 4-year plan, by grade level, for the use of Naviance Family Connection is being deployed.

We will increase services to develop a comprehensive “counseling” program to meet the social and emotional needs of our students.

Goal #5: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will provide a safe and inviting faith-based community by advancing a comprehensive program that encourages personal development, promotes leadership, and fosters school spirit throughout the Bishop Verot family.

Second Year Objectives: Bishop Verot has expanded the leadership and personal development opportunities for our students through access to co-curricular organizations.

Through these student leaders the student body is able to express to the administration their needs and interests.

Goal #8: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will develop a staffing program to meet the current and future educational, spiritual, and social needs of its students, and to enhance faculty and staff compensation, professional development, and morale.

Second Year Objectives: We are developing a means to identify/ articulate how the school’s mission translates into the expectations and experiences of faculty and staff. A faculty/ administration liaison committee has been created to increase effective communication and relationships.

Goal #9: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will develop and implement a comprehensive 5-year facilities master plan with a dedicated funding source to include space utilization, facility maintenance, and capital improvement/ repairs to support a 21st century college preparatory campus capable of attracting a student body necessary to sustain its mission.

Second Year Objectives: The establishment of a list of new facility needs using projected enrollment growth with costs has been completed. Combining the new 5-year facilities plan with the current 5-year capital replacement plan to establish the 5-year School Facilities Master Plan will be completed by December 2014.

Goal #10: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will decrease its dependency on tuition to meet budgetary needs through the creation of a long-range financial plan for developing alternative external revenue streams.

Second Year Objectives: A 5-year financial plan to include enrollment, staffing, capital outlay, and operating revenues and expenditures is being developed. Collaboration with the 2014-2015 school board finance committee, advancement department and athletic boosters for a systematic plan to increase non-tuition revenues is underway.

Goal #11: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will prepare and implement a revitalized, comprehensive institutional advancement plan designed to generate new

revenues through increased personal involvement of the principal, administration, faculty, staff, board members, parents, alumni and friends in programs of annual giving, planned giving and major gifts for programmatic support and growth.

Second Year Objectives: Existing fundraising programs and events were thoroughly reviewed so that these programs and events will be a source of revenue for the school. Target Analytics will be utilized in the development of our Annual Fund and all future fundraising campaigns.

Goal #12: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will create a branding initiative in order to establish a positive image in Southwest Florida as the premier college preparatory institution that graduates successful and well-rounded students.

Second Year Objectives: The marketing committee continues to evaluate the effectiveness of the branding initiative and adjust public relations campaigns in a timely manner. The development and implementation of the plan to promote world-class 21st-century instruction using iPad technology is ongoing. A new mobile web site is being designed and will be implemented in October 2014.

Goal #13: Bishop Verot Catholic High School will continue to strengthen its image in the community as a unique Catholic, college preparatory high school through increased involvement and development of relationships with local parishes, feeder schools, higher educational institutions, business partners, and community programs.

Second Year Objectives (2014-15): We continue to prioritize nurturing civic relations through our membership in selected organizations with the establishment of budgetary needs to accomplish this. A general informational brochure which can be distributed to those outside our community for the use of our facilities, such as the Anderson Theater, is being developed. We continually work to identify and pursue strategies to enhance relationships with the local church parishes and area colleges and universities. BV

Tony surprised the entire Metzger family by flying to Boston, MA and proposing at The Harvard Bookstore! The couple resides in Fort Myers and a wedding date for November 2015 is in the works. He owns a chartering business called Captain Daniel Andrews Fishing Charters and is one the best in the Southwest Florida area. He has a passion for fishing and made a career out of something he loves. He spends 250+ days each year on the water running charters and fishing tournaments.

Ali Yarbrough

Dino Kaklis

Alumni Dino Kaklis (‘92) was recently named as the new defensive coordinator at the University of Virginia College Wise.

UVa-Wise head coach said in a press release “His coaching credentials and experience are second to none.” Kaklis played at Purdue University and was the long snapper for the Boilermakers and has had assistant coaching stints at Eastern Illinois University, Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania, Maine Maritime Academy, and Bishop Verot. He was the head coach at Bethel (Tennessee) University for 10 seasons and led the Wildcats to an 8-3 record in 2011 and a berth in the NAIA national playoffs. His record at the school was 60-46.

Katie Mosher

This summer Katie Mosher (‘10) will get the chance to wear the red, white and blue as a part of a national volleyball team. She is a rising redshirt senior libero at Florida State, and will travel to Minneapolis to train with the 2014 USA National Collegiate volleyball team.

Mosher was selected as one of six liberos out of a 63 libero tryout to a team of the top 36 athletes. Mosher, a three-year captain, holds the FSU record for most digs in a season with 604 (2011). With one year left of eligibility, Mosher is on track to break the Seminoles’ career digs record. She is in third place with 1,615 digs.

AliYarbrough (‘12) attends the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and is on the competitive sailing team. USF team had a very successful spring season.

Ali helped the women’s team place 17th overall in the Sperry Top-Sider Championships and the Co-Ed Team placed 10th overall in the Annapolis Performance Sailing Appeal Team Racing Championship held at the U.S. Naval Academy and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

CLASS OF ‘13

Jesse Mitchell

Jesse Mitchell (‘13) is going into his sophomore year at the University of Mount Olive North Carolina. He plays on the Trojan’s division 2 Lacrosse team in an attack position. He was recently asked if he would like to represent the USA in Germany and Czech Republic playing in the Berlin and the Prague cup.

Jesse scored 11 goals in the competition.

Team USA won all games ended up playing Czech Republic national team in the final and won 4-3. Jesse and his USA teammates were very proud to come home with the gold!

CLASS OF ‘03 Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson (‘03) has had great success in MLB as a third baseman and just signed a three year extension with the Atlanta Braves on May 2nd, 2014. Last year Chris finished the 2013 campaign ranked fifth in the Majors and second in the National Leagues with a career-high .321 batting average in his first season with Atlanta.
