Normally this missive is written about events at Bishop Verot. I use this time to tout our successes or have you share in our challenges. But this issue is different. This time I am writing to bring each of you back to your memories of Verot, and inviting you to join me in thanks. Our school has been blessed, for over 30 years, by the grace of a very honorable and humble man. While his tenure is coming to an end, his years of service have brought peace and beauty to our campus, support to our students, camaraderie to our faculty, and true joy to the lives of everyone who has had the privilege of calling him a friend. It is with a heavy heart, and a deep sense of gratitude, that I announce the retirement of our beloved, Mr. Bill Stejskal. Throughout our existence, we are inundated with people who come and go from our lives. We all have the power within ourselves to be the best people we can be, but not everyone is consistently willing to use this power for good, and intently follow in the footsteps of Jesus. In my very blessed life I have come across just a few of these exceptional people, but without a doubt, the one who stands above all else is my friend Bill. As you read this letter, I am quite sure many of you are smiling and thinking of your own stories of Mr. Stejskal. His kindness, his genuine concern for every student, his calmness and his serenity (except when on the sidelines of the basketball court), and who could forget his amazing beard. He may have been your guidance counselor, your coach, or most recently, your Assistant Principal. What many of you never knew though, is how he spent every morning in the Verot chapel sitting quietly and giving his life back to God. How he would do anything asked of him without question or complaint. How he would come in early and stay late with no one knowing. How he could say one quiet comment which made everyone laugh, or get so angry he would sink to using words like, "jeez-umpete!" And how he did everything, every day, with no desire for recognition or accolades. He truly lives a life of selflessness and commitment to others. Parents and colleagues would resoundingly agree with these descriptions of Bill, and as they were often blessed with knowing him longer would expound on the sentiments with words like classy, the epitome of morality, a gentleman, compassionate, sympathetic, and someone who cared for all God’s creatures with equal concern and attention. Bill takes the time to really listen to people, rather than moving through life so fast he is only scanning the highlights of conversations. He cares the same about raccoons found on campus as he does for helping a colleague. He worries as much about a dying tree as he does about a failing student. He is a one-of-a-kind who continues to take joy in planting flowers and revitalizing furniture whose history has been forgotten (greybeardrestorations.com). He moves through his days with quiet diligence and never forgets to stop and give thanks for the beauty in every living thing. Bill Stejskal is a rare individual who has spent his life in service to others, and has done so with no reservation nor desire for power or accolades. Everyone whose life he has enriched is better for knowing him, myself included. His days may now be spent in service to a band saw and his beautiful grandchildren, but his genuineness will be his legacy. While no one is perfect, and Bill’s wife will be the first to laugh about a few of these attestations, he is someone who is anticipated with warmth, encountered with a soft and sincere smile, and remembered with class and sophistication. And for those fortunate few, he is our true friend. Please feel free to reach out to him as you are able, and help give back the kindness and sincerity he has effortlessly given to all of us. And join me in thanking him for making so many lives better by simply being a part of them.

T

Fr. Casey’s Corner

he goal of Catholic education really has at its core something going far beyond learning. Even in terms of our religious formation, we so often equate “Faith Formation” with the mere conferring of information. Knowledge of Catholic Culture, knowing the Church, her precepts, her doctrines; knowing about our created world; knowing our history; being steeped in art, literature and history; being on the cutting edge of technology are all integral and indispensable aspects of education equiping young men and women to take their place of excellence in the world when they leave the Verot classroom and enter into life. But at the heart of what we do, and the goal of all of these endeavors, I believe lies in one word: Encounter. At the heart of Catholic education lies a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. A line from Pope Benedict XVI often invoked by his successor, Pope Francis tells us: “Being a Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction”. This is the aim of all we do at Bishop Verot, to lead our students to have an encounter with Christ—not a vague idea, but a person who loves them radically, makes them heirs to God’s kingdom, and empowers them to share his love with others. This has been a year of blessed encounter. We began welcoming our large freshmen class who encountered Christ in the poor through acts of Christian service, moments of sharing, and an intense encounter with the Eucharistic Lord in the middle of the senior courtyard. Over one hundred Verot students have experienced the unique encounter with Christ provided in our “Live Jesus” retreats this year as they shared with one another their own need for Christ in their lives. Our students have participated in events both locally and nationally where they have stood up for those too weak to speak for themselves, the impoverished, the elderly, and the unborn. Our students have completed over 13,000 hours of Christian service to their school and to the larger Fort Myers / Lee County community. We have gathered as a school community to celebrate the Eucharistic Sacrifice of Jesus Christ fourteen times, and every day a portion of our school population has taken time during Flex to encounter Jesus in word and sacrament. These are just some of the ways Verot has facilitated an encounter with Christ in the lives of our students this year. As we see off another graduating class into the world, it is extraordinary to see them joining the ranks of Verot Alumni whom we all pray have experienced the unique encounter with Jesus Christ provided here by an exceptional faculty and staff. Knowing we never truly stop being a part of the Verot Family, it is my sincere prayer we are able to take the encounter we have had with Christ here, experience Him anew each day, and lead those around us to also have an authentic encounter with the person of Jesus Christ, and the encounter brings a positive change to our world, who desperately need what Christ has to offer. Thank you Verot family for all you do. Live Jesus! BV

A letter from the Director of Development My Fellow Vikings, Another school year has come and gone. The class of 2017 was the first 1:1 iPad class. The significance is the technology innovation and the continued educational excellence Bishop Verot provides our students. In just four short years the iPads have been completely woven into the fabric of our school. This accomplishment was due in large part to generous donations, unparalleled vision, and the dedication of the finest faculty and staff in Lee County. Beyond this milestone, we had a banner year of fundraising and community outreach. Our Raise the Roof raffle exceeded its goal and the Bishop John J. Nevins gymnasium has a new roof that will protect the gym for many years to come. Our 5k race was another “friend”raiser success, and the 5th Annual Gala & Auction-An Evening in Paris again exceeded our goals and expectations. Additionally, our Viking P.R.I.D.E. parent organization had another successful year raising much needed funds to be used in the classrooms. We were able to provide grants to many of our departments for needed items to enhance the student experience in the classroom and beyond. All of these events throughout the school year succeed because of our parent, student, alumni, staff, and friend participation. We cannot do any of this without you, thank you! In this issue of the B&G you will see the financial year in review. Thank you to all of our supporters for your generosity. With your help Bishop Verot will continue to be the leader in education excellence in Lee County. If you haven’t already, please consider a gift to Bishop Verot Catholic High School today. And as always, please keep Bishop Verot Catholic High School in your prayers. Non Excidet,

Gina Lombardo Director of Development If you are not a regular reader of the B&G please let us know and we will add you to our mailing list. Please email address updates to communications@bvhs.org.

Saying Goodbye to Verot…In His Words Mr. Bill Stejskal ’71 "A few years ago, I gave a rather uncharacteristically and emotional account of how I ended up at Verot, through the grace of Mike Gill, then Principal Fr. Tom Hopkins, and the Good Lord. I was traveling over the Whiskey Creek Bridge in my little green VW, windsurfer on top, a token of my job at the time, when I know God spoke to me. Of course, this was after much discernment with my wife, Candi. But, at that moment crossing the bridge, I knew taking the job at Verot was the right thing to do. However, I would have bet heavily at the time I would not have stayed here for over 30 years. While admittedly at this point in time, I am not sure if it is God talking to me or my internal clock, probably a bit of both, I know it is time for me to seek a new challenge at this stage in my life and move on. Undoubtedly, Verot has been like a second home to me and my family. For so many, many reasons, I have been truly blessed to have found this to be my place of calling during these years. What a magnificent profession – being a teacher, a coach, an educator. Where else can one have the opportunity to make an indelible impression each and every day upon the greatest gift we have – our kids? Where we have the ability to make a child who is having a really bad day – smile; where a child who may be feeling very much alone – feel loved and valued; where we might be the most meaningful person in a child’s life, be it for a day, a year, or perhaps forever. Besides a parent or grandparent, who can do this? But with this comes an enormous responsibility and challenge. There are those days when, as Dr. Denison would say, we know we aren’t bringing our A game. It is in those moments I can only encourage you to look to the original teacher for His inspiration, His direction, perhaps just His ear, and then – listen. It seems as I am getting older, I am doing a lot more listening. I have also been blessed to have had the opportunity to do a lot of different things while working here so I have experienced the school from many different perspectives. As a result, I have tried to live by these two principles: Be long on praise and support and be short - very short - on criticism

and negativity. If you haven’t walked in the shoes, you don’t know what it feels like to walk in them. I am fully confident each and everything we do here is done with the intent to move our school forward, maintaining our position as the best high school in Southwest Florida, and more importantly, to give our students the best education possible. Thank you all, and to so many of you who have not only been colleagues but friends, thank you for all you have brought to my life. God bless you. It has truly been a great ride.” Mr. Bill Stejskal will be sorely missed. However, he will not be cutting his ties completely, as he will be assisting in the next 5 Year Strategic Plan starting this fall. And check out his website www.greybeardrestorations.com to see what else he will be working on. BV

The 2017 Hall of Fame Honors our Roots T

his year we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our Athletic Hall of Fame where we have proudly inducted 38 studentathletes, coaches, volunteers, and state champion teams into this special community. After extensive discussion, it was decided to extend the consideration of inductees to include not only those involved with athletics but all individuals who have had an impact upon our Bishop Verot community, thus making it an all-inclusive Bishop Verot Catholic High School Hall of Fame. On May 20th, during the Class of 2017 Graduation

30

Ceremony, the first members of this elite family were celebrated. For the first 48 years of its existence, Bishop Verot Catholic High School was administered by a religious order. As the inaugural inductees, it is only fitting to recognize the two religious Orders who served in this role during those years. The Franciscan Sisters of Alleghany, New York and the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales were the first to be inducted into the Bishop Verot Catholic High School Hall of Fame. The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, New York, were present at the school from 1962 through 1982,

beginning with Mother Bernard Mary as Principal from 1962 – 1966 and culminating with Sister Mary Rose Watkins, who was Principal from 1972 – 1982. It is one of the reasons why St. Francis of Assisi is considered to be one of our school’s patron saints. In 1982, the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales began their tenure at Verot, beginning with Rev. Joseph Toner, who was principal from 1982 – 1984 and ending with Fr. Chris Beretta, who led the school from 2003 – 2010. St. Francis de Sales is also recognized as a patron saint of our school.

BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

During these two periods of leadership and administration, we were blessed not only with sisters and priests who led the schools as principals, but who were phenomenal teachers, coaches, and mentors to hundreds of students. Sr. Jeanne Williams, former Verot teacher, represented the Franciscan Sisters of Alleghany and Fr. Chris Hudgins, former Principal, represented the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales for the induction ceremony. Both were presented with a congratulatory proclamation and a plaque to be displayed on the new Hall of Fame Wall in the Main Office. BV

A

s the men had the Nazarite Challenge during November, the ladies were looking forward to a similar opportunity for them this spring. Students were invited to participate in a spiritual journey, led by Ms. Macke, called the Camino. As Christian women, they would embark on a special journey to discover what it means to be a woman in today’s world. The Camino (which also means The Way) was structured around the four cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The weekly discussions would introduce a virtue and give the ladies an opportunity to reflect upon how they can embrace it. The group also shared their Lenten commitments, holding each other accountable. They were encouraged to examine their worldly attachments and consider how a Lenten sacrifice could make more room for Christ in their hearts. “The Camino was something I would look forward to every Thursday morning. It was worth sacrificing sleep to learn about the cardinal virtues and just be able to talk amongst each other. One of the nicest things was learning a meaningful way to pray I can use in my daily life to feel closer to Christ. I would encourage any girls interested to join next year.

One of the neat perks is you get to wear sandals for a whole month!” - Nazaret Lorenzo ’17 Students who chose to participate were asked to commit to daily prayer, make a Lenten sacrifice, share their faith with others, and wear sandals during this time as a sign of their Camino. Meetings took place once a week before school in the Chapel. At the participants’ request, the meetings were extended by an additional two weeks, as the students enjoyed this special time of sharing and prayer. BV

Career Day 2017 Choosing a career can be extremely difficult, especially when you are a high school student. The Guidance Department offers an opportunity each spring helping students better understand some of the careers they may be considering. With over 25 presenters representing professions such as Architecture, Nursing, Broadcasting / Journalism, Engineering, Informational Technology, and Actuarial Science, students are able to better understand their areas of interest. In a small group setting, students may ask questions as well as learn about education requirements and challenges.

32

BLACK & GOLD | SUMMER 2017

While the invitation to present is open to everyone, it is always most impactful when our alumni return to tell their success story. This year, we were pleased to welcome nine alumni back on campus. For one alumnus, the experience was especially meaningful as it was at Career Day during her time as a student she made the choice to pursue a Marketing career. If you are interested in participating in next year’s event, please contact Deanna Breen at deanna.breen@bvhs.org. BV

Eric Poland '15 Wagner tennis

Jeff Passantino '14 Lipscomb baseball

Wagner tennis put together a winning record in the spring, thanks in part to the play of Poland. Poland played primarily at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Seahawks, and won eight of ten singles matches during a stretch in March and April. He was even more of a threat in doubles play, where he went 10-2 during the spring. In conference play, Poland and his partner recorded a 5-1 record.

Passantino saw a dream come true on June 14, as he was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 40th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. One of the best pitchers in Verot history posted another stellar season before his selection. The righthander’s 3.09 ERA was the best amongst the team’s starters, and he also logged team-bests in strikeouts (95) and starts (15). He was honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference as a Second Team All-Conference selection. Only one pitcher in the nation walked fewer batters per inning than Passantino, whose ratio of strikeouts to walks was also second best in the nation.

Evan Dougherty '14 Palm Beach Atlantic baseball After transferring to PBA from Duke, Dougherty immediately became a mainstay in the Sailfish lineup, as he was one of two players to play in and start every game. The outfielder scored a teamhigh runs, and recorded 12 doubles, four triples, and two home runs. He was also second on the team in hits and was a dangerous baserunner, shown by his 20 stolen bases in as many attempts. Dougherty was also surehanded in the field with a .985 fielding percentage.

Jesse Mitchell '13 Mount Olive lacrosse Mitchell finished his college lacrosse career well, scoring a career-high 15 goals to help Mount Olive to an 11-5 season. Daniel Vogelbach '11 Seattle Mariners

Rivera had a storybook season in his final year of college baseball. The senior was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, and played a crucial role in winning the conference championship and sending FGCU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Rivera, whose 20 home runs were among the top ten in the nation as of press time, led FGCU to a tournament victory over Michigan by belting two home runs in the Eagles’ first ever NCAA Regional game.

Vogelbach has split time this season between the Mariners and their triple-A affiliate, the Tacoma Rainiers. He drove in the first Major League run of his career in his season debut on April 23, recording an RBI single in Seattle’s 11-1 victory over the Oakland A’s.
